The nineteenth century brought great upheaval to Western societies. Democratic ideals and the Industrial Revolution swept through Europe and changed the daily lives of citizens at all levels. Struggles between the old world order and the new were the root causes of conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the American Civil War . From New York, to London, to Vienna, the world was changing and the consequences can still be felt to this day.

The lives of musicians, composers, and makers of musical instruments were greatly altered by these social changes. In earlier times, musicians were usually employed by either the church or the court and were merely servants to aristocratic circles. Composers wrote music for performances in these venues, and musical instrument makers produced instruments to be played by wealthy patrons or their servant musicians. With the rise of the middle class, more people wanted access to music performances and music education.

A new artistic aesthetic, Romanticism , replaced the ideals of order, symmetry, and form espoused by the classicists of the late eighteenth century. Romantics valued the natural world, idealized the life of the common man, rebelled against social conventions, and stressed the importance of the emotional in art. In music, Romanticism, along with new opportunities for earning a livelihood as a musician or composer, produced two seemingly opposite venues as the primary places for musical activity—the large theater and the parlor.

Music as Public Spectacle One result of the Industrial Revolution was the creation of a middle class. This new economic strata consisted of a larger number of people with more disposable income and more leisure time than had ever existed before. Musical extravaganzas that triumphed the musician or composer gained popularity with the masses of concertgoers. Beginning with Beethoven, composers began to arrange large concerts in order to introduce their works to the public. As audiences desired more, composers wrote larger musical works and demanded more of performers and their instruments.

The “bigger is better” mentality led to new musical forms such as the tone poem and large-scale symphonic and operatic works . Orchestras grew, including larger string sections with a full complement of woodwinds, brass, and ever more percussion instruments. New types of orchestral winds ( 2003.150a–g ) and brass ( 2002.190a–n ) that allowed for greater facility and more accurate playing were introduced. Composers such as Hector Berlioz, and later Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner, continually pushed the limits of the available musical forms, performers, instruments, and performance spaces throughout the nineteenth century.

Musicians who could dazzle and amaze their audiences by their virtuosity became the first musical superstars. The two most famous nineteenth-century examples were the violinist Nicolò Paganini (1782–1840) and the pianist Franz Liszt (1811–1886). Both dazzled audiences throughout Europe with their performances, elevating the status of the musician from servant to demigod. Their fame grew throughout Europe, and their likenesses would be recorded in a variety of visual arts.

In order to withstand the virtuosic and often bombastic playing of these soloists, as well as to provide the type of volume needed in large concert venues, more powerful instruments were needed. Larger and louder violins like those by Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737) or Guarneri del Gesù (1698–1744)—preferred by Paganini—replaced the quieter and subtler violins of earlier masters like Jacob Stainer (ca. 1617–1683) or the Amati family. The demands of pianists like Franz Liszt pressed the technology and design of pianos to ever-larger instruments, eventually replacing the internal wooden structures of the eighteenth century with cast-iron frames that could withstand thousands of pounds of pressure.

Parlor Music Conversely, music gained popularity in the intimate nineteenth-century parlor. At the time, home life was centered in the salon, or parlor, where children played and learned with adult supervision, and where the family entertained company. Musical performances for small groups of people became popular events, and some composers/performers were able to support themselves financially by performing in these small venues and attracting wealthy patrons. Most famous among these was Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849).

Music in the parlor was of a very different sort than in the concert hall. Solo performances and chamber music were popular, and included everything from operatic and orchestral transcriptions to sentimental love songs and ballads. In the United States, hymns and folk songs by composers like Stephen Foster (1826–1864) supplemented the European repertoire.

With the rise of the parlor as the center of family life, music education became increasingly important. Children were often taught to play musical instruments as part of a well-rounded education; for girls, playing an instrument was more important than learning to read. When guests and potential suitors visited, the children and teenagers would entertain with performances of the latest popular works.

All sorts of musical instruments were used in the home, and at various times the guitar , harp ( 2001.171 ), concertina, and banjo were extremely popular. However, the most important musical instrument in the home was the piano, because it was useful as both a solo instrument and as accompaniment to a group of singers or instrumentalists. To accommodate home use, smaller pianos were created, first square pianos and later uprights. Small pianos took up less space and, although they were not as powerful as larger types, they were also less expensive. With the technological advances of the Industrial Revolution, the mass manufacturing of musical instruments—especially pianos—provided a seemingly endless supply for the huge markets of both the United States and Europe. The piano would remain a central component of domestic life until it was replaced by the phonograph, radio, and television in the twentieth century.

Festival City Symphony- ‘Not an Irish Concert’ Festival City Symphony- ‘Not an Irish Concert’ Classical music shall never be old or out-dated. There is beauty in it, a melody which can soothe the listener’s mind. Usually, youngsters find it boring. But, they should earnestly try to give classical music a chance and listen to it for some times. Then, hopefully the rumour of it being boring can be put to rest. I attended a classical concert on 17th March 2013 by the professional musicians of Festival City Symphony. Named as ‘Not an Irish concert’, it comprised of some excellent performances based on the legendary compositions by Ludwig Van Beethoven and Sergei Rachmaninoff, which was presented so well by the musicians of Festival City Symphony (www.wisn.com). The award-winning pianist Jeannie Yu, a native of Korea was one of the artists who performed to thrill the audience. It actually turned out to be better than what I expected. Here’s a short summary of my experience at the Festival City Symphony’s great show. The venue of ‘Not an Irish Concert’ was Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There was a provision for the children who reached the venue 15 minutes earlier to Children to take part in the Children’s Program Notes (quoted from Symphony Sunday’s). It took place before the main concert where Music Educator Jayne Perkins (quoted. from Symphony Sunday’s) explained something about the music to be played in concert so that we could understand it better. The concert started at 3pm and kept us mesmerised till 5pm. A very talented and skilled to perfection orchestra began the show with their beautiful musical performances. They chose to play two of the great works by Ludwig Van Beethoven namely the ‘Leonore Overture No. 3,’ composed for his one and only opera Fidelio and the Symphony No. 8. Both of these compositions were wonderfully presented by the musicians. The audience applauded each performance with heartfelt thunders of clapping. Majority of the audience comprised of children. Yet, no one seemed bored. In fact everyone was thrilled there. The renowned Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff was another great performance presented by the musicians. The great pianist Jeannie Yu also performed for this. She was so spectacular with her musical notes that the audience got lost in it. It was really beautiful to see and listen to the symphony orchestra and the pianist play so wonderfully for 25 minutes. The variations which were played sounded very melodious. In my personal opinion, the concert was extremely well-performed and presented. I had especially listened to all these musical compositions back at home earlier so that I could understand and enjoy it properly at the concert. So, when the musician recreated these musical performances there, I was really very glad and excited. I particularly enjoyed the Symphony No.8. It was very interesting as well as melodious. It was almost 20 to 25 minutes long in duration and comprised some beautiful movements and tunes. It really appealed to me as at times, it was so funny and innovative with its tunes. We were told that Symphony No.8 is also known as a symphony of laughter. It really made me feel cheerful. So, I particularly like this one the most. There was not any performance I did not like. Still if I have to mention the performance I liked the least, it’s the Leonore Overture No. 3. It was great but not better than Symphony No.8 and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The reason I would give for choosing these two over Leonore Overture No. 3 is the appeal these compositions left with their variations and interesting musical notes. In conclusion, my visit to the Festival City Symphony’s ‘Not an Irish Concert’ was a memorable experience which helped me to understand and appreciate the classical music. It enabled me to feel the capacity of music to cheer, soothe and thrill a listener.

A Review of a Classical Music Concert

The Choir/Band concert performance was a great experience. The music was very crisp and pleasing to the ear, while the choir accompanied them quite well. I really have no complaints about the concert at all, I felt that it was put together well, and sounded great.

The song Gloria In Excelsis Deo by Josef Haydn was performed at the concert. The piece is a typical classical piece from the time period, although there are some characteristics of baroque splashed throughout and one could argue slight preludes to Romanticism.

The rhythms in the classical period were to be pleasing to the ear, all of which Hyadns piece does. The rhythms are very flexible, and unpredictable, making it overall more exciting for the listener. The dynamics of the piece are greatly different from that of the Baroque period and extremely Classical in nature. The dynamics are extremely flexible. Passages in Classical music were labeled as loud, soft, very loud, very soft etc.

The use of crescendo, and decrescendo are very Classical period trademarks.

The color of the tone was also a very concept for Classical music, and Haydns piece, Gloria In Excelsis Deo is a very colorful piece for this time period. The strings stand out the most to my ears as very upbeat and happy sounding, almost proud in nature. The tempo of the song was very upbeat and face paced, again, staying in the Classical time period, which focused on entertaining and pleasing the person who heard the music. Also, in the classical period themes are repeated over and over, which is the case in Haydns piece.

Overall, by listening to Haydns Gloria In Excelsis Deo, one can see the true genius he possessed by manipulating the sounds and styles before him and making a truly happy, uplifting experience for the listener, the Choir accompanied the band perfectly, and you left with the music still going on in your head, hearing it over and over, making sure you too were upbeat and happy.

Visiting concerts of classical music is always something unbelievable and captivating. People suppose to find themselves in some other world, but are not sure in what exactly. Classical music provides people with an opportunity to dream, think, love, and even exist. For those, who cannot differentiate what major or minor is, it may be rather troublesome to analyze the works by such great composers as Gabriel Faure, Martin Bresnick, Astor Piazzolla, and Johannes Brahms.

Ballade for cello and piano, created by Martin Bresnick in 2004, was firstly introduced by Andre Emelianoff at Merkin Hall in New York. In spite of the fact that this work presents dark colors and trembling melody, it captivates from the very first seconds. This masterpiece proves once again Bresnick’s unbelievable style, his formal characteristics, and rigor.

This Ballade was created as an homage to Johannes Brahms. Bresnick puts this work in minor, a bit cantabile. He provides the listeners with an attempt to imagine gloomy surroundings and be taken up by rather dolce style.

Cello Sonata No. 2 Op. 117 is another work that deserves our attention. It is created by a French composer, Gabriel Faure, in 1921, however, the date of its first publication is around 1922. It is a work of 3 movements in G minor: allegro, andante, and allegro vivo. In spite of the previous work, this sonata is characterized by more romantic style.

To my mind, it is a story of lost love, when people are in confusion of what to do further. It seems like the world does not change, but everything around is different. Cello Sonata No.2 is one of the most remarkable stories in the world of classical music. Piano and cello find each other and create a magnificent story that may be inherent to any person.

Astor Piazzolla is one more composer, who tried to present life emotions, losses, and happiness through classical music. He was a kind of tango boy, who observed the world through “tango” glasses. Le Grand Tango for violin and piano is one of the most beautiful masterpieces in classical music.

It is episodic in structure: energy, passion, calmness, and languor. The end of this composition is fascinating and in a real Italian style – glissando, a kind of sliding from one pitch to another, like a person, who is looking for something in order to find the only his/her place under in this world. This chamber work was created in far 1921; however, it still excites so many people and will be never forgotten.

The last but not the least classical work under consideration is The Piano Sonata No. 3 by Johannes Brahms presented in 1853 for the first time. It is created in F minor and consists of five different movements: allegro maestoso, andante, allegro energetic, andante molto, and allegro moderato.

This sonata is quite large for musical pieces of work. It is a combination of romantic nature of the composer with the strict classical requirements, which were so crucially important for classical works of those times. The Sonata No.2 is rather dynamic and invigorative piece of work that allows to pay attention to each detail that is so important in music.

These five works of different composers came from different centuries and countries. With the help of cello and piano, the composers present a new world, full of emotions and dreams, to their listeners. It is really great to comprehend their purposes and other things, which evoke to create such unforgettable masterpieces.
