How to Write a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Resume With Examples
You can write a great LPN resume by showing how you provide top-quality patient care and team support at a medical facility. The tips below will help you capture these skills in each section of your resume to get you interviews for your next LPN job.
NOTE: For job seekers in Texas or California, employers refer to this role as Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) .
1. Craft an outstanding profile summarizing your licensed practical nurse qualifications
Your resume Profile should catch hiring managers’ interest by giving the top reasons you excel at caring for patients and supporting RNs and other medical staff.
For example, maybe one reason is you’ve worked extensively as a CNA, so you know the importance of proactive daily care to patient outcomes and hospital operations. Or maybe you’ve been praised for noticing and flagging key changes in patients’ health status for RNs and physicians. Or you can quickly learn new skills to help clinics deal with fluctuating patient volume or staff coverage. Whatever your top strengths as an LPN are, cite them in your profile to show managers the value you’d generate for their healthcare organization.

Mid-Career Profile Example
2. add your licensed practical nurse experience with compelling examples.
With the Experience section, you can show you’re a great LPN by giving examples of your career success so far. Under each relevant job in your recent work history , add duties or highlights that show your building and applying key LPN traits like diligence, collaboration, and adaptability. Try to quantify these points with data that speaks to your current job goal. For example, if you collaborated on a team of 20 nurses and you’d like to work at a similar-size facility, include that number so hiring managers see the direct relevance of your background.

- Degree Name — [Major], School Name, City, ST | [Year]

Your Key Skills might include soft skills like teamwork, technical skills like Kareo EHR, patient age groups or demographics, or specific branches of medicine you’re drawn to. Below are just some of the LPN keywords to consider for your resume:

How do you align your resume with a job posting? -
The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that jobs for LPNs and LVNs will increase by about six percent between 2021 and 2031. This growth rate is roughly the same as the average for all US vocations.
You can get more interviews in this growing field if you tailor your resume for each job application. For example, say the hiring facility has many ESL patients. You may want to highlight your foreign language skills both in your Profile and as a separate section farther down the document. With a small adjustment like this, you can make your resume that much more relevant to the opportunity.
What is the best LPN resume format? -
In nearly all cases, you should use a Combination (or Hybrid) resume, because it’s easiest for hiring managers to learn about your pertinent skills and experience – it’s also easiest for you to align with your job goals.
With the combination format, you highlight your most relevant skills and experience in your Experience or Work History section, as well as an intro section. (This combination of work history and intro content is where the format gets its name.) Your resume intro should include a Profile summary and Key Skills section, but you may also add a Career Highlights or Awards section. By choosing the details for these intro sections, you can (a) position yourself for your target job and (b) give hiring managers a clear, quick view of what you offer.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) resume examples & templates
Between the global health crisis and an aging population, there’s a shortage of healthcare workers for all the patients needing to be seen, according to the NIH . Licensed Practical Nurses, or LPNs, help fill the gaps by providing the basic care that allows doctors and RNs to treat more people at a time.
LPNs are essential to the healthcare field and can find positions in many different settings. All it takes is a great LPN resume to help you land the interview and get started making a difference in the medical field. Luckily, Resume.io is here to help. With 300+ resume examples and writing guides, we’re an expert resource for professionals across industries and experience levels.
This resume guide, along with the corresponding LPN resume example, will cover the following topics:
What does a licensed practical nurse do?
- How to write an LPN resume (tips and tricks)
- The best format for an LPN resume
- Advice on each section of your resume (summary, work history, education, skills)
- Professional resume layout and design hints
Licensed practical nurses or LPNs are the helping hands of the healthcare industry. This role usually requires a one-year training program where LPNs learn the basics of anatomy, physiology, and medical care.
Licensed practical nurses are often employed in residential facilities or nursing homes where they perform a number of tasks, including
- Bathing and changing patients
- Dressing wounds and other first aid tasks
- Administering medication and treatments
- Checking blood pressure and other vital signs
- Reporting findings to doctors and registered nurses
A job as an LPN can also make for a great stepping stone into the medical field as many licensed practical nurses go on to complete further education to become RNs or other healthcare workers.
LPN job market and outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the demand for LPNs to rise by 6 percent over the coming decade. Most of these new jobs will be found in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
How to write an LPN resume
The very first step in writing your LPN resume is understanding what sections to include. Your CV should contain the following elements:
- The resume header
- The resume summary (aka profile or personal statement)
- The employment history section
- The resume skills section
- The education section
By following this structure, you’ll be able to create an LPN resume that shows organization and seriousness about the position – both of which are important for the medical field. You’ll want to take a balanced approach in writing your LPN resume. While practical skills are the basis of your work, your resume is also a good place to show your empathetic nature and commitment to a high standard of patient care.
Make sure to read the job description closely to better understand the employer’s ideal candidate and the duties of the particular job. A position in a pediatric private practice will look a lot different than that of an assisted living facility. Adjust your resume to the skills and workstyle needed for the role to show the employer that you’re truly interested in becoming part of their team.
Choosing the best resume format for an LPN
LPNs with some amount of previous experience – even internships – should consider choosing the reverse chronological resume format as this is the structure hiring managers expect to see. This “traditional” resume format focuses on the employment history section where you can list your previous jobs going back through about 10 years. However, if your experience in the medical field doesn’t extend that far, make sure to focus your resume only on the relevant previous positions.
If you’re just starting out as an LPN or are making a career change, you may consider using a hybrid resume format. This often entails an experience section at the start of your resume to capture a wider range of activities. You may also include a less prominent employment history section further down. We do not recommend the functional resume format for professionals in formal fields like medicine.
Resume header
The header occupies the space at the very top of your resume. This is where you’ll place your name and contact details so the hiring manager can find them should they want to set up an interview. You may also place your LinkedIn or other relevant links here. LPNs should make sure to choose a professional and organized design for their header since the medical field is a formal environment. See our adaptable LPN resume example to get started creating a great header.
Resume summary example
The resume summary is the perfect place to show examples of your ability to treat patients with respect and empathy. That’s because these 3-5 sentences at the top of the page make up the most freeform section of your resume. The summary allows you to call the hiring manager’s attention to your education and experience, while also offering a touch of your personality. By highlighting your most relevant qualifications in the summary, the hiring manager will be more likely to continue reading your resume. You can find an adaptable summary in our LPN resume example.

Experienced LPN with strong background and proven expertise in nursing and medical care. Outstanding track record of coordinating full continuum of care by maintaining ongoing communications with patients, caregivers, physicians and specialists. History of delivering calm, compassionate care in all patient and caregiver interactions, and of maintaining highly organized schedules and records. Excel at developing rapport to provide education to patients.
Employment history sample
The employment history section is a favorite of hiring managers because it allows them to succinctly evaluate your previous experience and your readiness for their position. Make sure to include only the positions relevant to an LPN (ideally without leaving large “gaps” of unemployment). Include the job title, employer name, dates worked, and location. Then offer 4-5 bullet points that summarize your responsibilities, achievements, and skills. Make sure to give numbers, statistics, or other bits of concrete information to showcase your impact on the workplace. See our adaptable resume sample below for more guidance on writing your employment history section.

CV skills example
The CV skills section is a roundup of all your top qualifications. Before compiling this section, make sure to reread the job description and pull out any specific technical skills or personality traits the hiring manager is looking for. Place them on your resume using the employer’s exact language. This step will increase your chances of passing the Applicant Tracking System. Your skills section should be a balance of practical knowledge and your ability to put patients at ease. See our CV skills resume sample for more insight.

LPN resume education example
Since LPNs are required to be licensed, the education section takes on extra importance for your resume. Make sure to include the name of the school where you completed your education, the dates attended, and the location. You’ll also want to mention where you passed your LPN exam and give the prospective employer your license number. The education section is also the place to include any awards, recognition, ongoing training, or leadership roles you’ve held. See our resume example below.
Associate of Science in Nursing, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Perkinston, MS September 2016 - June 2018
Resume layout and design
LPNs need to be efficient and organized – and your resume layout should be, too. A clean, easy-to-read design will go a long way in showing the hiring manager you’re a professional candidate serious about their position.
Make sure to use consistent font styles and sizes throughout your resume and include clear section titles like “Employment History” or “Education.” This will help both the hiring manager and the ATS find the information they are looking for.
As goes for most medical professionals, LPNs should avoid flashy or eclectic resume designs with bright color schemes. A neutral or monochromatic look can still be stylish while conforming to the norms of hiring in the healthcare field. Resume.io’s collection of professional resume templates can take the guesswork out of resume designs and allow you to focus on the writing.

Having seen a resume sample, let's explore different resume formats to understand which one suits your needs best.
How to format an LPN resume
As a LPN, you don’t need a visually stunning resume. Opt for a simple or a traditional resume template that will convey your seriousness and professionalism.
Resume format
Pair your classic layout with a classic approach when listing your experience. You can’t go wrong with the reverse-chronological format: it’s widely recognised and convenient as it lists your experiences starting with the most recent.
Top sections on a resume
Having chosen the right resume format , keep in mind the resume sections you should include:
- Personal information
- Professional summary
- Work experience
- Education and licensing
- Special skills or qualifications
More details on each section follow.
Resume designs
- Aim for a 1-page resume . Your profession has taught you how important it is to be concise and choose the right words, so apply this to your application.
- Ensure readability with margins between 0.5” and 1” on all sides.
- Save space and make your resume easily scannable with a two-column layout .
- Focus on important aspects by adding subtle colors and matching them with classic fonts , such as Arial, Garamond, or Times New Roman.
Contact information
Your resume header is your calling card. So, it should include all the essentials: your name, job title, and contact information . Generally, a photo isn’t needed , unless the specific place you’re applying for requires it.
Contrary to popular belief, our tests showed that fonts, colors, columns, and resume length don’t affect Applicant Tracking Systems parsing. Focus on matching job description language and formatting details like dates and bullet symbols as those may affect your application.
File formatting
Keep all your resume elements intact with a PDF format , unless your desired job posting says otherwise. Use a simple naming convention , such as: FirstName_LastName_JobTitle.

How to write your LPN resume experience
Your experience section holds the most significance—after all, it’s where potential employers will find out most about who you are as an employee and as a person. Think what are the strongest points you can include in each experience entry, and structure them with bullets and action verbs .
Instead of listing generic responsibilities, incorporate real examples in this section to keep HRs engaged.
Make sure you include information on:
- The medical institutions you worked for and the period you spent there.
- Your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities related to patient care.
- Any medical software you work with.
Let’s take a look at a real LPN job description.

To strengthen your resume, it’s crucial to quantify your work experience—let's learn how to do that.
How to quantify your experience on a resume
When your main focus is caring about patients, quantifying your achievements might seem like the last thing on your mind. However, it’s a practical way to show how you’ve made a real difference.
On an LPN resume, aim to translate your hard work into clear, impactful results, proving that you do more than just the job—you excel at it, enhancing both patient outcomes and the efficiency of your healthcare team. Here’s how you can approach it:
- Include the number of patients you typically cared for on a daily basis, as this illustrates your ability to handle workload and prioritize care.
- Document any reduction in patient readmission rates or improvement in patient health outcomes under your care, showing your effectiveness as an LPN.
- List any specific procedures you are competent in, along with the frequency with which you performed them, demonstrating both your specialized skills and experience.
- Showcase any continuous education or training courses where you achieved exemplary scores, highlighting your commitment to enhancing your skills.
- Mention any instances where your proactive actions led to streamlining or efficiency improvement in your former employment, providing evidence of your contribution to a more effective work environment.
If you’re new to the workforce, don't worry. Here’s how to handle a resume with little to no experience.
How do I write a LPN resume with no experience
Let’s say you’re a fresh graduate and you now want to pursue a career in nursing. It’s natural you’re a bit overwhelmed about where to begin. Even if you have no practical experience , you can still fill your resume with important things you’ve done, such as:
- Volunteer work
- Internships
- Relevant practical experience
When you’re an entry-level LPN, focus on any valuable experience you’ve gained so far, and pair it with a strong set of transferable skills and academic achievements you’re proud of.
Use a skills-based resume format and include an engaging resume objective on top. Keep it short (1 - 3 sentences) and make sure you clearly state what you think you can contribute, and why you want to work in that particular place. Like so:
The resume objective works well because it clearly shows the LPN's commitment and skills, emphasizing their role in improving patient care and teamwork. This makes the candidate stand out as a valuable team player in any healthcare setting, which is key in a competitive job market.
From here, we’ll transition to discussing the essential hard and soft skills to include on your resume.

How to write your LPN resume summary

- 3 – 5 sentences on your best qualities and qualifications.
- Active voice and resume buzzwords , such as patient care, team collaboration, and medication administration.
- Measurable experience that gives insight into your accomplishments.
- Additional training that adds value.
- And finally, highlight what you can do for the company.
We’ve tailored this summary to the job posting we discussed earlier:
This resume summary emphasizes the applicant’s commitment to patient-centered care and their ability to adapt to the specific demands of home health services, outlining their preparedness and suitability for the role.
With your resume taking shape, let’s consider adding additional sections to further underscore your skills and achievements.
Additional sections for a LPN resume
If you have space available, and you want to provide more depth to your professional profile, additional sections can be the way to go. You can add one of the following:
- Including volunteer work , especially in healthcare settings, shows commitment to the community and can reveal a well-rounded skill set.
- Listing memberships in professional organizations can indicate an ongoing engagement with the latest industry trends and standards.
- Displaying recognition received in nursing or related fields can signal excellence and reliability in your profession.
- Continuing education , including courses and seminars, taken beyond initial certification indicates a dedication to career development and staying updated with medical advancements.
You can even add a customized My Day section using the Enhancv resume builder . It provides potential employers with an insightful breakdown of an LPN's daily responsibilities and skills, bringing out their ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively.
A licenced practice nurse resume has to prove your dedication to patient care and your eagerness to bring your skills to a new facility, showing your commitment and professionalism.

We're just getting the template ready for you, just a second left.
Recruiter Insight: Why this resume works in 2022
Tips to help you write your lpn nurse (licensed practical nurse) resume in 2024, include relevant certifications and training.
As an LPN, you've likely completed a bunch of certifications, such as IV therapy or gerontology. Make sure these are clearly outlined in your resume, particularly if they're ones that the job description specifically mentions.
Detail your patient care experience
Hiring managers want to see that you can handle patient care responsibilities, so include details of the type of care you've provided. For instance, if you worked in a long-term care facility, describe how you managed patient hygiene, medication administration, and vital signs monitoring.
As you pursue a role in the world of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you must be prepared to showcase your unique blend of clinical skills and empathy. In recent times, healthcare settings are increasingly relying on LPNs not just for basic nursing care but for their ability to connect with patients. They appreciate LPNs who can balance human touch with technical proficiency. So, when drafting your resume, remember to present a compelling mix of your technical knowledge, patient care skills, and ability to work under pressure. The industry is moving towards more specialized care, which means your resume needs to emphasize any specific nursing skills or areas of expertise you've developed. Similarly, companies value LPNs who are continuous learners and are adapting to the evolving healthcare landscape. It's critical to demonstrate your commitment to ongoing education and upskilling on your resume.
Show your hands-on experience
Keep in mind, recruiters are likely to favor LPN applicants who can prove real-world experience. Be sure to detail your clinical rotations, duties performed, and the types of healthcare settings you've worked in.
Emphasize your specialized skills
If you have expertise in a specialized area like geriatrics, palliative care, or rehabilitation, make it prominent on your resume. Don't bury unique skills, these can set you apart from other LPN applicants.
As a hiring manager who has recruited LPN nurses at top healthcare providers like HCA Healthcare, Ascension Health, and UnitedHealth Group, I've reviewed hundreds of resumes. The best LPN resumes effectively highlight your nursing skills, certifications, and patient care experience. Here are 6 tips to make your resume stand out:
Showcase your LPN license and certifications
Make sure to prominently feature your LPN license, including the license number and expiration date. Also include any specialty certifications you have earned, such as:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- IV Therapy certification
- Wound Care certification
- Gerontology certification
Employers want to quickly verify that you have the required credentials for the job. Don't make them hunt for this important information.
Quantify your nursing experience with metrics
When describing your nursing experience, use specific numbers to quantify your impact whenever possible. Compare the following examples:
- Provided patient care on a medical-surgical unit
- Administered medications to patients
Instead, quantify your experience like this:
- Provided care for up to 6 patients per shift on a 30-bed medical-surgical unit
- Administered medications to 20+ patients daily with 100% accuracy
Using metrics makes your experience more tangible and impressive to hiring managers. It also helps them picture the scope of your responsibilities.
Highlight your patient care and clinical skills
As an LPN, your clinical skills and bedside manner are crucial. Emphasize your experience with:
- Patient assessments and vital signs
- Medication administration
- Wound care and dressing changes
- Inserting and maintaining catheters
- Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Documenting in electronic health records (EHR)
- Communicating with patients and families
Use strong action verbs to describe your nursing duties, such as assessed, monitored, administered, assisted, and educated.
Tailor your resume to the specific LPN job
Not all LPN roles are exactly the same. Review the job posting carefully and customize your resume to fit the requirements. For example:
- If the job emphasizes long-term care experience, highlight any nursing home or assisted living experience you have.
- If the job requires experience with certain conditions like diabetes or dementia, showcase any relevant clinical experience or training.
For an LPN position in a busy outpatient clinic, you could write: "Experienced in fast-paced outpatient settings. Routinely assisted with minor office procedures, administered injections and immunizations, and educated patients on treatment plans."
Tailoring your resume demonstrates that you understand the role and have the right qualifications.
Include any leadership or training experience
Many LPNs take on leadership roles like:
- Charge nurse on a 40-bed rehabilitation unit
- Preceptor and trainer for 5 newly hired LPNs
- Shift supervisor overseeing 8 nursing assistants
Leadership experience shows you have strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills - all valuable assets in a nursing role.
Also include any experience training new staff or nursing students. This demonstrates your ability to educate others and mentor a team.
List your nursing education and GPA
In the education section, list where you completed your accredited practical nursing program. Include:
- School name and location
- Degree or diploma earned (e.g. Diploma in Practical Nursing)
- Graduation date
If you graduated within the last 3 years and earned a strong GPA, you may want to list it to emphasize your academic success.
Education Practical Nursing Diploma ABC Technical College, Somewhere, NY Graduated: May 2022 GPA: 3.8/4.0
For experienced LPNs, your education should be listed below your professional nursing experience on your resume.
Writing Your LPN Nurse (Licensed Practical Nurse) Resume: Section By Section
summary.
A resume summary, also known as a professional summary or summary statement, is an optional section that can be a powerful tool for LPN nurses. While not required, it provides an opportunity to highlight your most relevant qualifications, skills, and experiences at the top of your resume. It can be particularly useful if you are a career changer or have a lot of experience to summarize.
However, it's important to avoid using an objective statement, which is an outdated approach that focuses on your goals rather than what you can offer to the employer. Instead, a well-crafted summary should provide a concise overview of your professional profile and the value you bring to the role.

1. Tailor your LPN summary to the job description
When writing your LPN nurse resume summary, it's crucial to align it with the specific requirements and preferences outlined in the job description. This demonstrates to the employer that you have carefully read and understood their needs and that you possess the relevant skills and experience they are seeking.
For example, if the job description emphasizes experience in a particular healthcare setting, such as a nursing home or a pediatric clinic, make sure to highlight your relevant experience in those areas.
- Compassionate LPN with 5+ years of experience in long-term care facilities, skilled in providing quality patient care and collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure optimal outcomes.
- Dedicated pediatric LPN with 3 years of experience in a busy clinic setting, adept at administering vaccinations, conducting well-child exams, and educating parents on child health and development.
To ensure your resume is well-tailored to the job, try using Targeted Resume , which compares your resume against a specific job description and provides personalized recommendations to improve your chances of success.
2. Showcase your LPN skills and achievements
Your LPN nurse resume summary is the perfect place to showcase your most impressive skills and achievements. - Hardworking and dedicated LPN with a proven track record of success.
- Skilled in patient care, medication administration, and documentation.
While these examples mention relevant skills, they lack specificity and fail to provide concrete evidence of your capabilities. Instead, try highlighting quantifiable achievements and specific skills that set you apart:
- Efficient LPN who consistently maintains a 99% medication administration accuracy rate and receives frequent praise from patients and supervisors for exceptional bedside manner.
- Proactive LPN experienced in managing patient caseloads of up to 20 individuals, implementing personalized care plans, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes and reduce readmission rates by 15%.

Experience
As an LPN nurse, your work experience section is the heart of your resume. It's where you showcase your clinical skills, patient care abilities, and healthcare knowledge. To make a strong impression on hiring managers, you need to highlight your most relevant experiences, quantify your achievements, and use industry-specific language.
In this section, we'll break down the key steps to crafting a compelling work experience section that will help you stand out from other LPN candidates.
1. Highlight your LPN clinical skills
When describing your work experience, focus on the clinical skills that are most relevant to the LPN role you're applying for. This could include:
- Administering medications and injections
- Monitoring vital signs and patient conditions
- Performing wound care and dressing changes
- Assisting with diagnostic tests and procedures
Be specific about the types of patients you've worked with and the healthcare settings you've experienced. For example:
- Provided direct patient care to a diverse population of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients in a fast-paced hospital setting
- Assisted with wound care and dressing changes for post-operative patients in a skilled nursing facility
2. Quantify your nursing achievements
Whenever possible, use numbers and metrics to quantify your achievements and show the impact of your work. This could include:
- The number of patients you cared for per shift
- The percentage of medication errors you prevented through careful administration
- The number of successful IV insertions you performed
Administered medications to 20+ patients per shift with 100% accuracy, ensuring timely and correct dosages.
In contrast, avoid vague statements that don't provide any measurable impact, like:
- Gave medications to patients
- Responsible for preventing medication errors
3. Showcase your patient care and communication abilities
As an LPN, your ability to provide compassionate patient care and communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams is crucial. Highlight experiences that demonstrate these soft skills, such as:
- Educating patients and families about treatment plans and medication regimens
- Collaborating with RNs, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care
- Providing emotional support and comfort to patients during difficult procedures or end-of-life care
For example:
Collaborated with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to develop and implement individualized care plans for a diverse patient population, ensuring holistic and patient-centered care.
To make your resume even stronger, try using our Targeted Resume tool. It analyzes your resume against a specific job description and provides tailored feedback to ensure you're showcasing the right skills and experience for the LPN role you want.
4. Highlight your career growth and nursing specializations
If you've progressed in your LPN career or gained experience in specific nursing specialties, make sure to highlight this in your work experience section. This could include:
- Promotions from entry-level LPN to charge nurse or team leader roles
- Specializations in areas like pediatrics, geriatrics, or oncology
- Completion of relevant certifications or training programs
Promoted to LPN Team Leader after demonstrating strong clinical skills and leadership abilities, overseeing a team of 5 LPNs and ensuring high-quality patient care.
Avoid simply listing your job titles without providing context on your growth or specializations, like:
- LPN, ABC Hospital
- LPN Team Leader, XYZ Clinic
Remember, your work experience section should tell a story of your growth and development as an LPN. By highlighting your career progression and specializations, you show hiring managers that you're committed to advancing your nursing skills and expertise.
Education
Your education section is a key part of your LPN resume. It shows employers that you have the required training and knowledge for the job. Here are some tips to make sure your education section stands out:
1. Put your LPN diploma or degree first
As an LPN, your nursing diploma or associate degree is your most important educational credential. List it at the top of your education section, like this:
Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (ADN) XYZ Community College, Anytown, NY Graduated: May 2021
Include the full name of your degree, the school you attended, its location, and your graduation date. If you have a high GPA (3.5 or above), you can include that too.
2. Add relevant coursework and clinical experience
If you're a recent graduate, listing relevant coursework and clinical rotations can help show your knowledge and hands-on experience. But keep it brief, like this:
- Relevant Coursework: Pharmacology, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Pediatric Nursing
- Clinical Rotations: Geriatrics (80 hours), Pediatrics (120 hours)
Don't list all your courses, just the ones most relevant to the LPN jobs you're applying for. And don't list basic prerequisites like anatomy that all nursing students take.
3. Include LPN license and other healthcare certifications
In addition to your degree, be sure to list your LPN license and other relevant certifications, like:
- Licensed Practical Nurse, New York State Board of Nursing, License #123456
- BLS Certification, American Heart Association
For experienced LPNs, keep your education section short. Just list your degree, school and license on 1-2 lines, like this:
Associate Degree in Nursing, ABC College. LPN License #123456.
Don't list graduation dates if it was over 10-15 years ago, to avoid potential age discrimination.
Skills
Your skills section is one of the most important parts of your LPN resume. It's where you showcase your qualifications and expertise to potential employers. A well-crafted skills section can help you stand out from other candidates and demonstrate your value as an LPN nurse.
When writing your skills section, focus on the specific skills and qualifications that are most relevant to the job you're applying for. Here are some tips to help you create a strong skills section:
1. Highlight your nursing skills and certifications
As an LPN nurse, you have a unique set of skills and certifications that are essential to your job. Make sure to highlight these in your skills section, such as:
- Basic patient care
- Vital signs monitoring
- Electronic medical records (EMR)
- CPR and First Aid certifications
By highlighting your specific nursing skills and certifications, you show potential employers that you have the qualifications necessary to excel in the role.
2. Use industry-specific keywords
Many healthcare organizations use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen resumes for relevant keywords. To ensure your resume makes it past these filters, use industry-specific keywords in your skills section.
Here's an example of a skills section that uses relevant keywords:
Patient assessment Medication administration Wound care IV therapy Electronic medical records (EMR) HIPAA compliance Infection control
By using these keywords, you increase the chances of your resume being seen by a hiring manager.
3. Avoid generic or outdated skills
While it may be tempting to include a long list of skills in your resume, it's important to be selective and only include skills that are relevant and current. Avoid generic or outdated skills that don't showcase your expertise as an LPN nurse.
Here's an example of a skills section that includes generic and outdated skills:
Customer service Microsoft Office Typing Faxing
Instead, focus on skills that are specific to your role as an LPN nurse and that demonstrate your qualifications and expertise:
Patient Care : Patient assessment, medication administration, wound care Technology : Electronic medical records (EMR), medical devices, point-of-care testing Certifications : CPR, First Aid, IV therapy

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a LPN Resume
In this competitive job market, employers receive an average of 180 applications for each open position. To process these resumes, companies often rely on automated applicant tracking systems, which can sift through resumes and eliminate the least qualified applicants. If your resume is among the few that make it past these bots, it must still impress the recruiter or hiring manager. With so many applications coming in, recruiters typically give each resume only 5 seconds of their attention before deciding whether to discard it. Considering this, it's best to avoid including any distracting information on your application that could cause it to be thrown away. To help make sure your resume stands out, review the list below of what you should not include on your job application.
- Not including a cover letter. A cover letter is a great way to explain why you are the best candidate for the job and why you want the position.
- Using too much jargon. Hiring managers do not want to read a resume full of technical terms that they do not understand.
- Omitting important details. Make sure to include your contact information, educational background, job history, and any relevant skills and experiences.
- Using a generic template. Take the time to customize your resume to the job you are applying for. This will show the employer that you are serious about the position.
- Spelling and grammar errors. Always double-check your resume for typos, spelling mistakes, and grammar errors.
- Focusing too much on duties. Make sure to include accomplishments and successes to show the employer that you are a great candidate.
- Including personal information. Avoid including any personal information such as age, marital status, or religious beliefs.
Key takeaways for a LPN resume
- Highlight your credentials and certifications up front.
- Include your work history, including any relevant experience.
- List any specialized skills or relevant training.
- Mention any awards or distinctions you have received.
- Include any professional associations or organizations you are a part of.
- Be sure to list any relevant licenses or certifications.

What Matters Most: Your Skills & Job History
Recruiters are likely to skim your resume’s skills section first, so make sure you take the opportunity to share what sets you apart! This is no time to be basic about your nursing abilities.
You want to be as specific as possible about what you do so that recruiters can clearly see where your specialties fall within the LPN role: Are you best suited for a physical therapy setting or hospice care?
Be as specific as possible while listing your skills so that you appear broadly familiar with the job role, but make your niche obvious, whether it’s long-term or emergency care:
9 best LPN skills
- Advanced Care Plans
- Patient Education
- Geriatric LTC
- ADL Evaluation
- Patient Rehabilitation
- Treatment Planning
Sample LPN Work Experience Bullet Points
Once your skills are taken care of, you’ll want to demonstrate that you can put them into practice with finesse. Recruiters want to see that you understand how to use your best judgment while complying with nursing regulations to provide optimal care.
The best way to share this qualifying info is through the bulleted lists in your experience section: Make sure each medication administration and vital monitoring example has sleek, credible context.
And how do you boost your credibility? Quantifiable data that measures your impact as an LPN. Always include metrics to back up your claims, like the percentages in these examples:
- Administered 6 types of POC tests during home visits and notified patients of lab results in 24 hours or less, improving positive feedback by 16%
- Conducted patient rooming processes for 189 patients, increasing patient satisfaction by 31%
- Educated patients and their families on the safe treatment of their condition, decreasing the need for repeat visits by 48%
- Assessed, monitored, and documented treatment progress, symptoms, and vital signs with 94% accuracy
Top 5 Tips for Your LPN Resume
- Demonstrate your compassionate nature by pulling in some experience examples that involve supporting patient and family well-being. Metrics are important, but it’s also critical for an LPN to show their desire to help others.
- Your licenses are crucial in showing your qualifications and potential as an LPN. Things like PTA (Physical Therapy Assistant, ECS (Enhanced Care Services), and CPR/First Aid belong in their own section alongside your LPN license.
- As an LPN, pristine organizational methods are a must. You’re responsible for vital patient information, and you keep everything in its proper place so others can find what they need at a glance. Do the same with your resume sections!
- You may not want to use page space on one. You’ve likely racked up tons of memorable stories during your experience as an LPN, so use your versatile background to show your history if you risk repeating yourself with an objective statement .
- While you definitely want to include memorable context for your experience points, keep it nice and concise: Each point should outline what you accomplished with your efficiency and caring nature, give some brief context that shows why you did it, and provide quantifiable metrics of your impact within the medical setting.
Look for ways to niche by referring to the job description again. Seek out keywords and profession-related phrases like “preoperative” and “vital signs” to reflect in your resume. Tweak these with each application to show your detail-oriented nature.
While it’s true that you want to show personality as an individual LPN, don’t go over the top with colors on your resume template . Stick with just a bit of color to set off headers or contact info. And always use plain, readable fonts.
Arrange the bullet points in your experience section to show an advancement throughout your work history: Your duties should get more complex and your context should demonstrate that you’re proactive, quick on your feet, and flawless with those urgent IVs!
