Written Essays

The essays are an important part of your MBA application because they are an opportunity to tell the MBA Admissions Committee more about yourself. To go beyond your resume bullet points and share more of your story and goals. Please complete the required 3 short answer questions and 2 essay questions below and follow the word limits provided. Your essays should be written in 12-point, Arial font and spaced at 1.5; please do not include the essay title on the page. Upload your essay answers, numbered and in order, as one pdf document in your application portal.

Short Answer Questions (40-word limit each)

Answer all 3 of the short answer questions below. Each response should be no more than 40 words.

  • What are your short-term post-MBA career goals?
  • How will your professional experience and the Goizueta MBA help you to achieve those goals?
  • What’s a fun fact about you that you would like the committee to know?

Essay Questions (300-word limit each)

Answer the 2 essay questions below. Each response should be no more than 300 words.

  • What about this experience made you feel proud of your leadership abilities?
  • What did this experience teach you about leadership?
  • Our lived experiences shape who we are and the aspirations we have. As a values-driven community, we care about what has shaped your life. Please share what or who has had the biggest impact on your life.

Optional Essay (500-word limit)

Still have more to share? This optional essay is your opportunity to share something you couldn’t find a place for on your application. This is also where you should address anything the committee may question (e.g., gaps in employment, academic challenges, choice of recommender). You can use essay format or bullets. Please identify topics if more than one is addressed.

  • Video Essay

Telling your story through written essays is an important part of the application, but the video essay lets us hear your words in your own voice. In the required video essay, every candidate will answer a “small talk” question to help the MBA Admissions Committee get to know you. The video essay instructions and link are located in your application portal.

Recommendations

As part of the Full-time MBA application, we require two letters of recommendation. We prefer that these recommendations are professional in nature. Please be thoughtful when selecting your recommenders, and make sure that you choose at least one person who knows you well in your current position such as a direct supervisor, project manager, or client. Your recommender should be able to answer the following questions about you:

  • Please indicate to which group you are comparing this candidate (e.g., co-worker, MBA graduate, etc.)
  • What characteristics or attributes best describe the applicant?
  • In what area is the applicant most exceptional?
  • In what area(s) does the applicant need improvement? Describe the applicant's awareness of these areas and response to constructive feedback.
  • How would you describe the applicant's interpersonal skills and the impression they make in meetings, presentations, or other interactions? Is the applicant effective when working in a team?

As part of the online MBA application, you will have the option of sending your recommendation requests in the form of an online survey. You may send the recommendation request through the online application at any time by entering their contact information, including their email address, and clicking the box that says, "Send to recommender." Goizueta Business School also accepts the  GMAC Common Recommendation Form  in lieu of our own recommendation form. Please enter your recommender information into our online application and advise your recommender to attach the GMAC recommendation as prompted without filling out our form.

Request Recommendation via Online MBA Application

On-Campus & Virtual Interviews

Interviews are by invitation only, after review of a completed Full-time MBA application. Submit all required application materials in order to be considered.

Interviews are an important part of the MBA admission process. All students who are admitted to our programs have been interviewed. The admissions interview offers you the opportunity to explain more in depth your educational and career experiences to date, and to elaborate on your post-MBA career plans. The interviewer is interested in both your professional accomplishments as well as your leadership and community achievements. The interview is similar to a professional job interview, and as such you should dress in business attire and bring an updated copy of your résumé. Interviews last approximately 30 minutes.

English Language Test Scores

Goizueta Business School expects all students to possess strong communication skills in English.

You are  not  required to submit an English Language Test Score if your undergraduate degree is from an institution in which English is the language of instruction  AND  you work in a country where commerce is generally conducted in English (for example: India, Pakistan, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Ghana, Nigeria, and Uganda).  No TOEFL waiver is required, please do not request one.

For all other applicants whose native language is not English, we require the  TOEFL  exam (recommended score of 100 IBT or higher), the IELTS (recommended score of 7.0 or higher), or Duolingo (recommended score of 120-125). We require  official scores  be sent directly from the testing agency and to be received by our office by the deadline of the round in which you are applying (estimated delivery time is 20 days from test date or date requested). Your application will remain incomplete until the scores are received; unofficial test-taker copies are not accepted.

English Language Test waiver may be requested if a candidate has:

  • Spent at least 3 years in the U.S. studying toward completion of an undergraduate degree,  OR
  • Completed a graduate degree in the U.S. followed by at least 1 year of work in the U.S.

Requests for a waiver should be submitted in writing via email   after  you have submitted your MBA application. Please provide explanation in the body of your email to show how you meet the above requirements.

Re-Applicants

If you are re-applying within two years of your original Full-time MBA application, you are required to submit the information below. If more than two years have passed since your last application, you must complete all parts of the MBA admission application.

  • Online application and $175 re-application fee
  • Updated résumé
  • A new or updated recommendation

Emory Goizueta MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines [2023-2024], Class Profile

emory mba video essay

Emory Goizueta wants to learn about your professional plans, alignment with the school’s core values, and ability to concisely convey this information through written essays. Additionally, the school’s video essay allows you to present yourself authentically. Don’t be fooled by the short length of the required essays. The brevity requires tough decisions about what key points and anecdotes to include and what to leave out. Write simply and directly to pack as much meaning and impact as possible into each word. And then ensure that your video “personality” aligns with your written “personality.”

Post-MBA Career Goals: What will professional success look like immediately after your MBA experience? Please describe where you would like this degree program to take you professionally. Include information such as desired job title, responsibilities, company, impact, and/or industry. Explain how your professional experiences and personal strengths align with your post-MBA goals. (200 word limit)

This essay is a straightforward goals essay with a low word limit, so you must get straight to the point. The prompt focuses on the job you want as you graduate from business school: your short-term goal. Clearly state your desired position, including the title, industry, and function. You may also include one or two companies on your target list. Be careful to clarify that these companies are ones for which you would like to work rather than the only companies you would consider working for.

Next, you want to connect the dots between what you have done (your professional experiences and strengths) and what you want to do (your goal). To determine what kind of context to provide, consider these questions: What skills have you developed that are transferrable? What type of responsibility are you looking for? Briefly describe the impact you want to have in the role. Sharing information about your long-term goal is unnecessary here because the prompt refers explicitly to your short-term goal.

Although no one will tie you to this goal once you start the program, you nevertheless need to paint a picture for the admissions reader that illustrates that you truly understand the role and have a plan to achieve it. If your goal is a stretch for you, acknowledge this reality, and then lay out your plan for achieving it.

Leadership in Business: Goizueta Business School is a values-driven community with a mission to prepare principled leaders to have an influence on business and society. Please tell us which of the Goizueta Core Values (Courage, Accountability, Integrity, Rigor, Diversity, Team, Community) resonates most with you and share a personal account of demonstrating leadership in this area within your current or previous company or service organization. The committee is interested in a personal story of leadership. (200 word limit)

This essay requires you to demonstrate your personal alignment with Goizueta’s values through a leadership example. After considering the school’s core values, identify which ones most closely coincide with your own. Next, make a list of leadership experiences that correspond to each of the shared values. Note that the prompt indicates that the leadership story you share can be a professional one or one related to your experiences with a service organization.

From your list of options, identify which example in which you made an impact on others best aligns with one of the program’s values. The limited word count means that you will need to briefly explain the story while spending most of the essay focused on your actions and your impact, tying them to the core value you have selected.

Reflecting on this experience, what did you learn, and how would you apply these learnings in the MBA program? You might also want to identify resources at the school that will allow you to continue to grow as a principled leader.

Optional Essay

If there is an important part of your story missing from your MBA application (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, past academic challenges), please use this section to provide a brief explanation. Please use bullets if you need to address more than one topic. (200 word limit)

As part of the prompt, Goizueta provides examples of why you might want to submit an optional essay. Consider your entire application, and ask yourself whether you feel you have presented a well-rounded picture of your candidacy. What about your background? Has the application otherwise provided a place to share that you are a first-generation college student? Or that you grew up in challenging circumstances, perhaps as part of an underserved community? Providing additional insights into the obstacles you have overcome will allow the admissions committee to understand how you have persevered to get to where you are today. If you have nothing to add, you do not need to write an optional essay simply because it’s there.

Whether you use the optional essay or not, take the same care in providing your answer as you will with the other essays in the application.

Video Essay

Telling your story through written essays is an important part of the application, but the video essay lets us hear your words in your own voice. In the required video essay, every candidate will answer a “small talk” question to help the MBA Admissions Committee get to know you. The video essay instructions and link are located in your application portal.

The video essay allows you to present yourself in a different way to the application readers and gives the entire adcom an opportunity to get a sense of you personally. With the video essay, members of the adcom that you did not have a opportunity to meet at an MBA fair, on campus, or through the interview process will be able to see and hear from you directly. For nonnative English speakers, this video also serves to give the adcom a sample of your English-speaking abilities.

While you won’t know the question ahead of time, the description of it as a “small talk” question gives the sense that the committee wants to hear from you authentically. That said, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to feel more prepared for the video essay:

Consider your background.

When getting ready for the video essay, make sure you are mindful of what will be in the background of your video. A simple, decluttered setup is what I recommend. You don’t want anything to distract the viewer from watching you and listening to your response.

Research “small talk” prompts.

Write down eight to ten “small talk” prompts on individual pieces of paper. Think of things you might talk to someone about at a cocktail party – questions like “What is your favorite restaurant or movie?” or “What kind of music do you enjoy?” Fold the pieces of paper up and put them in a container. You will use these prompts when simulating the video essay.

Practice by recording yourself.

Using Zoom or Google Meet, you can set up a meeting to record yourself to simulate the video essay. I suggest you wear business attire for your practice sessions as well as the official video essay. Follow the same timing restrictions you will have for the actual video essay. Set a timer for 30 seconds and another for 60 seconds.

Begin the simulation by selecting one of the questions you wrote on the pieces of paper you prepared. Click on the 30-second timer and collect your thoughts for your answer. At the end of 30 seconds, click on the 60-second timer and begin recording.

Start your answer by introducing yourself, and don’t forget to smile! Provide your response to the “small talk” question you selected. You can end your answer by thanking the viewer for the opportunity to share a bit about yourself. Be sure to smile as you are thanking them.

The instructions for the video essay indicate that you can use the entire 60 seconds or stop recording when you feel you have answered the question.

Review your recording and critique yourself.

Play back the recording and notice how you come across in the video. Are you smiling? Was your camera at eye level, and did you look at the camera while talking? Is there anything distracting in the background? Note anything you want to tweak, and set up another practice round.

While you do not want to appear over-rehearsed, this simulation will allow you to get used to the process you will follow when you record your video essay for submission.

Reapplicant essay #1

What will professional success look like immediately after your MBA experience? Please describe where you would like this degree program to take you professionally. Include information such as desired job title, responsibilities, company, impact, and/or industry. Explain how your professional experiences and personal strengths align with your post-MBA goals. (200 word limit)

This is the same goals essay that first-time applicants must submit. Please refer to our analysis of it at the beginning of this blog post.

Reapplicant essay #2

Explain how you have improved your candidacy for Goizueta Business School’s MBA program since your last application. (200 word limit)

The adcom is interested in knowing what has changed since you applied last. Consider enhancements to your candidacy from a career and academic standpoint. Professionally, have you taken on additional responsibilities? Were you promoted? Did you earn any certifications or other accolades? Academically, did you take any additional coursework? Did you retake the GMAT or GRE?

Emory Goizueta MBA Admissions | @GBSadmissions

Top 5: essay tips.

Last November we heard from Julie Barefoot in her post on how to approach Goizueta’s applicant essays , but we’re back this year with some fresh, new tips on how to further improve your essay writing. Below you can find Team G(oizueta Admissions)’s Top 5 Essay Tips . Happy writing!

1) Tell a story, but make it your own.  Don’t just focus on telling us, the admissions committee, what you think we want to hear. Instead, make sure you are taking advantage of the space given to really paint a picture of who you are as the applicant. Goizueta is looking for individuals with diverse experiences – not robots! Use the additional essay option to address any points not easily explained in other areas of the application (poor academic performance, gaps in employment, GMAT/GRE results, etc.). 2) Don’t repeat your resume. We already have your resume! We don’t need the same thing twice.

The essay portion of the application represents an opportunity to share an extension of your resume. Build upon what you have already told us, and show how that experience relates to your goals: both now and post-MBA. Where have you been? With your MBA, where are you headed? 3) Read the question (and then read it again). Read the question and look for slight nuances between the essay questions of different schools. Just because an essay question sounds like a similar one from another school does not mean it is the same question. Furthermore, don’t forget to answer the entire question that is asked – instead of answering the question how you wished it were asked. Try this: ask a friend or family member to read your essay, but don’t show them the essay question.  Can he or she figure out the essay prompt without looking? 4) Demonstrate that you took some time to learn about the school. Goizueta in particular asks applicants to watch a short video about our namesake, Mr. Roberto Goizueta, and then reflect on his life in an essay response.  Your answer to this essay question should leave no doubt that you actually took the time (only 2-3 minutes) to watch this video.   5) Don’t just proofread for grammar. When you have finished writing your essays, find someone you trust to help you proofread and look over your writing. While we are looking for excellent subject-verb agreement and spelling, don’t just settle for a grammar review. Ask for a critique of your content, and see if you can gain any valuable feedback about the themes, style, and tone of your essay. We look forward to reading your essays! -Team G Bonus tip - Continuity is key. If you mention the name of the school in your essay (which you should do), make sure the name is consistently correct throughout the essay. Also, the same issue holds true for the school location. Bottom line - don’t write:  “Goizueta Business School is my top choice for MBA study.  I can’t wait to study in a great college town like Chapel Hill.”

At Menlo Coaching, we noticed that most MBA essays will fall into one of a number of categories: personal essays, career goals essays, behavioral essays, etc. Read ahead for our expert guide on approaching these essays for Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.

Career Goals Essay

  • What will professional success look like immediately after your MBA experience? Please describe where you would like this degree program to take you professionally. Optional Essay

  • If there is an important part of your story missing from your MBA application (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, academic probation issues), please use this section to provide a brief explanation. Applying to Emory Goizueta School of Business

In this MBA program, students are encouraged “to take risks and make mistakes.” They are looking for students who are moved to create. Through the story you relate in your essay, the admissions council is looking to see if you reflect the same values that the school does. Emory is looking for students who are looking to develop their emotional intelligence and eager to use rigorous analysis. The best way to represent that you possess those qualities is through the type of essay you choose to write.

It’s crucial to pick the right experience to discuss in your essay, and the different types of prompts help narrow that down for you. Keep reading for a closer look at the different types of essays, and how best to utilize them in order to write a stand-out essay for Emory Goizueta.

The Career Goals Essay

You’re not the only one hoping you’ll have a job after you’ve graduated with your MBA. Admissions committees are looking for students who are motivated and clear in their intentions so that when they get a job post-grad, they’ll be more willing to speak positively of their experience in the program. And, of course, in the hopes that their alumni will earn enough money to become a donor to the school one day.

There are three aspects to the career goals essay:

  • What you want your future profession to look like.
  • Why an MBA is necessary to advance your career.
  • Particularly, why a degree from Emory Goizueta will be most beneficial to you and your job plan.

Your aspirations need to be convincing, ambitious, and realistic. Emory Goizueta is looking for applicants who have meaningful goals grounded in their past experiences, and it’s important that you relate that notion in your essay, however it applies to your experience in life.

The Behavioral Essay

To make it simple: the behavioral essay is meant to show the team at Emory Goizueta that you have developed some sort of leadership skills, what your values are as a leader, and how you are going to most benefit from their development programs.

The admissions committee is looking for applicants that are self-reflective. Whether it’s through a setback you’ve experienced, or how you dealt with situations that have gone awry, the school is looking for students who are resilient and able to learn from their mistakes.

Do not overexaggerate (or underexaggerate!) the situations you decide to write about. Be honest about what happened; Emory is looking for genuine people to join their campus community, and they are less likely to admit an applicant who has overinflated their prior experiences.

Last but not least, make sure to describe what you learned and how you implemented this in a subsequent situation. This is an  expected  element of the behavioral essay, even if it’s not directly written in the prompt. The school is looking for applicants who will act with humility, and have confidence without attitude. Prompts that deal with these topics can be daunting, especially when they require you to write about a weakness you have or a failure you’ve experienced.

Now, here’s where all that practice stuffing extra-curriculars into your resume comes in handy. Emory University is looking for MBA applicants who are going to get involved on campus. Being an active participant in campus culture is essential to the experience of Goizueta’s graduate business program, and this university is looking for students who will not only enrich their own lives, but that of the school as well. Many of the programs on campus rely on students to run them, which is your golden ticket in.

When writing this kind of essay, it’s important to keep in mind what your specific interests are—which clubs do you want to join, which conferences do you wish to attend? Figuring out where you most want to be involved and writing how you will thus benefit the school in that position is the key to writing a strong participation essay. Spend some time researching and thinking through your options before diving into the writing process.

When it comes to  video essays , we have some advice:

  • Practice—but don’t memorize:  it’s always clear if someone has memorized what they intend to say in a video essay verbatim, and this can make your content seem staged and inauthentic. If you find that you’re repeating the same speech over and over again, change the first sentence. You’ll be surprised at how this will throw you off!
  • Make sure that your setting is appropriate:  you want to make sure that your lighting is good and that there are no empty tequila bottles in the background.
  • Speak slowly and clearly:  clear diction can make a big difference when it comes to reviewing your video essay.

The content of your video essay should be very personal, but if you apply the above advice to an authentic, relaxed video essay, you should swim through the Goizueta video essay!

Once you’ve completed your application, the optional Tepper essay gives you an additional opportunity to provide the AdCom with any additional information or clarity that you feel would enhance your application.

One trap that MBA applicants fall into is using the additional space provided by this essay to write on a whole new topic. However, this is not always the best idea.

You should only make use of this essay if you what you write will provide context to an element of your application to improve your candidacy—you don’t want to jeopardize your chances by adding unnecessary noise to your application.

Writing strong, coherent, genuine stories is an essential part of your MBA application. These essays are meant to help you stand out among many other applicants, so it is worth your time to do the work and write about situations unique to your life and that you truly learned from.

Emory’s Goizueta School of Business MBA Application Essay Questions and Tips

Jatin bhandari.

  • October 6, 2021
  • MBA Consulting

Located in Atlanta, USA, Emory’s Goizueta School of Business is one of the top MBA programs in the US. In it’s 2019-2020 admissions cycle, Emory made two changes to it’s MBA essays section.

1. It rephrased its Leadership focused Essay Prompt.

2. The Short-answer essay prompts were replaced by a Video Essay.

The 2020-2021 admissions cycle for Emory saw another change to the Essay prompts. Emory now asks MBA applicants the “Why Goizueta?” question to better understand their fit with the business school.

With two mandatory 300 word-limit essay prompts, one mandatory 200 word-limit essays prompt, one video essay, and another optional essay, Emory’s MBA essay section resembles the European pattern of MBA application essays.

Although it makes the MBA application process a bit longer, the pros are also evident. It allows each applicant to share their story in great detail, improving their candidature for a seat in Emory’s MBA class.

Emory’s Goizueta School of Business MBA Application Essays

Post-mba career goals, define your short-term post-mba career goals. how are your professional strengths, past experience, and personal attributes aligned with these goals (300 word limit).

This is your straightforward career goals essay. It is one of the most used essay prompts to evaluate an applicant.

To start off this essay, detail your short-term MBA goal. This is the immediate position you wish to hold once you graduate from Emory’s MBA program. Don’t be afraid of getting into the specifics of your short-term goals. From the industry to the job role, to the company you plan to work at, tell the admissions committee about everything.

Also, explain your thought process behind your choice. Explain why a certain job role or industry interests you. What drew you to the organization you wish to work at post-MBA. A point to note would be to choose an organization from the list of recruiters that frequent Emory during Career Week.

Moving on to the second part of this question, write about your transferable skills from your past and current work experience. This, in no way, means repeating your MBA resume. All you really need to do is evaluate all the skills you have acquired up till the MBA, and how these skills will help you be effective in your post-MBA goal.

This is also known as the equation of employability. It talks about how your current skill-set with the knowledge and skills you’ll acquire during your MBA would help you achieve your short-term and long-term post-MBA goals.

While the admissions committees realize that a lot of applicants don’t end up sticking to the goals in their career goals essay, it tells them about the clarity of goals that the applicant has.

Leadership in Business

The business school is named for roberto c. goizueta, former chairman and ceo of the coca-cola company, who led the organization for 16 years, extending its global reach, quadrupling consumption, building brand responsibility, creating unprecedented shareholder wealth, and demonstrating a commitment to values and positive impact on society. roberto goizueta’s core values guide us in educating principled leaders to have a positive influence on business and society. provide a specific example of your leadership and explain what you learned about yourself through the experience. (300 word limit).

Pay special attention to the values that the essay prompt mentions above. As an applicant to Emory, the school expects you to showcase some of these values.

While leadership is a broad term, the specific style of leadership differs at each business school. When writing the answer to Emory’s essay on leadership, you don’t only need to provide a specific and recent example of leadership, you will also need to highlight the global mindset behind it.

As you explain how this experience impacted those around you, you will also need to introspect and share the impact it had on you directly. Did it change your thought pattern in any way? If the answer to this question is no, you might want to brainstorm more and look for another experience to share through this essay.

Video Essay

Telling your story in the written essays is an important part of the application process, but we also want to hear you tell some of your story. the video essay lets every candidate talk to the mba admissions committee and we enjoy getting to know you through the “cocktail” questions..

Take a deep breath as you attempt to answer the Video Essay for Emory.

The video essay is an on-the-spot question generated through a question bank. Applicants have 30 seconds to prepare a 60-min answer and three tries to get it right. Getting it right does not mean an answer that the Emory admissions committee will find flawless. Getting it right refers to the applicant’s satisfaction with their answer.

You could go around the internet and look at old prompts that Emory has used for this essay and prepare for them. However, preparing the rest of your MBA application authentically will help you answer this question without diving into the black hole for MBA applicants that can be Google. The 30-sec prep time is enough for an applicant to create bullets for what they want to discuss as they answer the randomly generated prompt. All you need to do is stay true to all the information you have shared in your MBA profile.

Optional Essay

If there is an important part of your story missing from your mba application (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, academic probation issues), please use this section to provide a brief explanation. please use bullets if you need to address more than one topic. (200 word limit).

This is one essay where you can feel free to not create a blueprint before answering the question. As the essay prompt suggests, feel free to use bullet points rather than paragraphs to address multiple topics. Also, don’t feel obliged to answer this optional essay question.

If you have a certain aspect of your profile that you feel doesn’t match up to Emory’s standards, this essay prompt is the right place to discuss it. If your MBA profile falls short on academic or professional grounds, this optional statement can be used to share strenuous events that might have caused that.

However, refrain from blaming the shortcomings of your profile on anyone or anything. Instead, take responsibility and share details of the steps you have taken to rectify the same. Maybe you took a Math course on Coursera to make up for a low GMAT score. Or you had responsibilities that kept you out of the workplace for a few months.

This optional essay is your chance to explain your situation to the admissions committee before you get to elaborate on it during your interviews.
