Positive Messages

One's own actions determine life's course. However, to alter fate, suicide is recklessly attempted. The importance of a caring and loving family. Melodrama and sentimentality often take center stage.

Positive Role Models

Characters are flawed yet have certain respectable qualities. Prerana is carefree and optimistic despite her serious medical condition. She is determined to serve others as a doctor. Vikramaditya is resolute and matures through the film. From an indifferent flirt, he becomes an honest and affectionate lover. Both lead characters have supportive, caring, and understanding families. After losing her arm in an accident, Tara shows resilience in going on to win a position in archery at the Paralympics.

Diverse Representations

Although most of the action takes place in Italy, the central characters are Indian. Emphasis on ancient Hindu practices of palmistry and astrology. Women pursue diverse careers and are shown to excel in their fields, including that of being a doctor. A female character performs a classical Indian dance form at an international level. After losing an arm in an accident, a character wins a position in archery at the Paralympics. However, this character is reduced to their disability, which is only present for the main lead to make a philosophical discovery.

Violence & Scariness

Prominent themes around suicide as characters test fate. Significant gore, blood, and injury. In a chase sequence, a character skateboards in traffic and collides with a bus. News footage of several people dead in a train accident, also where a character is severely injured and loses their arm. A morgue scene with dead bodies. References to murder and poisoning. Intense scene where a character lets go of their steering wheel and accelerates in a test of fate. A truck crashes into their vehicle -- they survive but suffer serious injuries. Long sequence of a ship sinking; near drowning. Character is diagnosed with a life-threatening tumor but eventually survives.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Multiple kissing scenes. Sex implied in one scene where characters lie in bed with bodies covered by a sheet; no explicit nudity. References to casual sexual encounters, referred to as "flirtationship." Many Bollywood love songs with corny romance.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Radhe Shyam is a 2022 Indian romantic drama -- with intense scenes involving suicide and bloody/gory accidents -- that explores destiny versus free will. Set in 1970s Europe, the story follows the fate-altering relationship between Vikramaditya (Prabhas), a world-famous palmist, and Prerana (Pooja Hegde), a doctor with a fatal medical condition. There are multiple kissing scenes, and one implied sex scene -- no nudity is shown -- as well as references to casual sexual encounters. Expect stunts, chase sequences, and significant gore. At one point, the lead characters dangerously dangle out of a moving train, while there are several accidents (including a train toppling over, a ship sinking, and a character being run over by a bus) that cause injury or death. A prominent character attempts suicide by letting go of the steering wheel while driving and is seriously injured. There are medical procedures (defibrillation, surgery) and heavy discussions about death. One scene involves characters drinking, but not to excess. The movie is in Telugu and Hindi with English subtitles and an English-dubbed version available. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails .

Radhe Shyam: A middle-aged bearded Indian man sits on a wall drinking from a cup

What's the Story?

In the 1970s-set RADHE SHYAM, Vikramaditya (Prabhas) is a renowned palmist whose predictions never go wrong. Believing he is not destined for love, Vikramaditya only indulges in casual relationships with women. But his foresight falls short when he encounters the happy-go-lucky Prerana (Pooja Hegde). Falling for one another, the duo decide to wage a war against fate.

Is It Any Good?

Starring a famous and celebrated Indian cast -- that includes Hegde and Prabhas -- this romantic drama fails to live up to its promise. Shot extensively in Europe, Radhe Shyam boasts intense action, adventure, and emotion, delivering a fairy tale vibe through pretty scenery and praiseworthy visual effects. Unfortunately the mawkish melodrama and the clichéd star-crossed lovers theme is boring, with neither the characters nor the story having much depth. The humor is also silly and the music a tad too mushy. Which is a shame as the premise of fate versus free will had potential. But the various reckless acts that are done in the name of romance are hardly the best examples for any watching kids.

The VFX deserves an applause, and adds to the visual quality of the film. But all of this barely salvages this love story whose destiny could have really been something else.

Prabhas and Pooja Hegde's film is packed with romance, songs, VFX, grand outdoors but not a lot of logic or good writing.

All-in-all, watch it for the fresh pairing and the picture postcard visuals, and that terrific climax set at the sea…

Radhe Shyam Movie Review: A Tale of Epic Expositions

Cast:  Prabhas, Pooja Hegde

Director:  Radha Krishna Kumar

There's something audacious about a star of Prabhas' proportions agreeing to do a full-length love story without any action and banking purely on the script and his own acting calibre. After Saaho and the announcement of films with Prashant Neel and Sandeep Reddy Vanga, there was a fear that the pre- Baahubali Prabhas who was known for being the goofy-masala star of romantic dramas had completely faded out. Even his comic timing and dialogue delivery hasn't been adequately used in nearly a decade.

But in Radhe Shyam he wants to try and remodel himself into that mould again. Utter romantic dialogues, be a goof in love on screen, and of course, the most important of all, be smolderingly attractive and walk-in slow-motion to ensure that the women in the audience can lust after him. Unfortunately, all of this might have worked for the pre- Baahubali Prabhas but in Radhe Shyam he looks tired, his eyes are droopy, simple dialogues seem laborious, and he just isn't funny as much as cringey.

Radhe Shyam tells the story of an expert palm reader ("Einstein of Palmistry" as the film keeps referring to him) Vikramaditya (Prabhas) who falls in love with Prerana (Pooja Hegde), a doctor. They are both in Italy in the 70s because something something Indian emergency something but the real reason seems to be that a 'Prabhas' film must have a scale that is bigger than his previous films. Back to Prerana and Vikramaditya. They are not supposed to be in love because it's not within their fate. Why can't Prerana and Vikramaditya be in love? Can Vikramditya read his own palm and does he know something we don't? Did Prabhas read the script?

Radhe Shyam is directed by Radha Krishna Kumar who is one film old, that film being Jil which was a regular masala-fare. Here, he tries to tell a pure love story along the lines of Manirathnam's Geethanjali but adds a layer of Hindu mysticism to it. In that attempt, Radha Krishna Kumar has envisioned beautiful frames that show his influences ranging from Mani Ratham to Michael Gondry and maybe even master framemaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Some frames are beautiful to look at such as a train running through a lake as the lead pair stare into each other's eyes; some seem like ambitious homages like when Prerana and Vikramaditya are lying on snow as if they are the only ones in the world (similar to the posters of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ); some are plain cheesy like Prabhas being at one end of the rainbow while Pooja Hegde runs to the other end.

But they are all beautiful frames put together by cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, production designer Ravindar, and costume designers Eka Lakhani and Thota Vijay Bhaskar. Even the sets designed by Gayatri Shinde and the art by Illia Boccia, Sagar Mali, and Giulia Parigi have raised the bar at least twofold for any Telugu film that comes after this. Rarely do Telugu films look so pretty and this one looks stunning. The interiors of a house look so picture-perfect that, even a bed that's been slept on for a whole night looks barely crumpled as if to sleep properly on them is to sin.

But here is where Radha Krishna Kumar's script (he wrote the film too) lets down the scale of the film and its stars. He seems to be so invested in the frames that in terms of storytelling, he's taken it far too literally where his characters tell us what happened and what we are supposed to feel rather than show us.

Take this scene for example. Vikramaditya tells Prerana that if she doesn't come outside a certain place by 10 AM the next day, he will never show his face to her again. This is usual Telugu film territory. But the next day he shows up at said time and place. But how do we know this gesture is grand? Because a character literally tells us something to the effect of "Did he just travel 300 kilometres in freezing temperatures and pouring rain across mountains to meet you?" And that is how we learn that he did all of those things. Otherwise, we get a Prabhas on a bike with no scratches or signs of wear and tear and he looks prim and proper with barely a stain on his clothes.

I'm not asking to be shown thermometers and rain gauges but don't expect me to be awed by the result without showing me the process. The film suffers throughout from excess exposition.

And it commits the other cardinal sin that lies adjacent to exposition — easy and convenient payoffs. There is a ship captain (played by Jayaram in a Captain Haddock way) who is always in the hospital because he is constantly worried he has a disease i.e. he is nosophobic. He's given a few scenes to play for laughs and his scene with Prabhas, which the film thinks is ripe uproarious comedy barely causes a chuckle and that is induced neither by Prabhas' nor by Jayaram's acting chops. But this captain suddenly changes his life — we barely see him contemplate and his entrance, in the end, is so outrageous that even Vikramaditya can't predict it.

Similarly, there are characters who have no payoffs but they are all supposed to mean something. Jagapathi Babu plays a character who has no outcome in any event in the film and yet his scenes were retained. There is a scene with an archer where she asks "Do armless handicapped people not have a future?" and what is supposed to be a meaningful moment feels like a silly question asked by a 14-year-old. Towards the climax, we are supposed to feel destroyed by the fact that Vikramaditya is leaving his mother with his friend, and he's leaving his entire life behind. But how can we do that when we don't care about them enough? Do we really need Kunal Roy Kapur to play a 'fat' friend who eats a lot? Did we even need such a character again in such a seemingly ambitious film?

Director Radha Krishna Kumar also struggles to handle Justin Prabhakaran's fantastic music. I'm just going to leave you with one example so that you know how odd the songs feel on screen. Radhe Shyam's biggest song (and my personal favourite too) is 'Ee Raathale' sung by Yuvan Shankar Raja. When the chorus hits, the song is magical as the lyrics say "Ee raathale Dhoobuchule" (This fate keeps toying with us) and there is a sweet fusion of Carnatic and Western music that explodes. But in the film when this same chorus hits at one point it cuts to Vikramaditya and his family eating. There's more Prabhas and Kunal Roy Kapur toying with the rice on their plate than the enormity of fate playing with anyone. Other songs suffer similarly.

I suspected the film to share this 'fate' after I saw one of its first frames. It said "Story Idea by Chandrashekhar Yeleti". Radha Krishna Kumar worked as an assistant under Chandrashekhar Yeleti for nine years or so. Chandrashekhar Yeleti is Telugu cinema's most overrated "underrated director" as he too suffers from being an ideas man who struggles to translate them on screen.

Radha Krishna Kumar too has some big and ambitious ideas. I think the idea to intertwine death, love and fate is a winning combination and similarly to make your protagonist a palmist is a brave idea. This is not to say you have to agree or believe in astrology. But such a literal interpretation of fate and love is a great idea given that Prabhas caters to large sections of the audience. But it feels like a gimmick rather than a characteristic and when Prabhas harps on about not having a 'love line' it makes his character seem flaky whereas the film wants us to think he's a tragic hero. Similarly when the character wants 'flirtationship' (which in modern terms would be fuckboi) it feels cheesy and makes the audience cringe rather than be something that you find endearing.

And finally, the two plot points that the film considers 'twists' do not work primarily because they are withheld from us and we have to struggle through a bland but beautiful first half and an equally generic second half till the twists are revealed one by one. They're not worth the wait because there are no 'real' obstacles to this love story. Had Radha Krishna Kumar followed Manirantham's Geethanjali where the conditions of the lead pair are revealed early on, Radhe Shyam might have been a more exciting watch.

Maybe this film could have used some action as opposed to completely avoiding it. Maybe the film could have borrowed a little from Krishna Vamsi's Murari which intertwined Hindu ideas of fate with young love and came out a smashingly entertaining and lovable film. Maybe…

The most enjoyable moments in the film are also its most genuine ones and those pertain to the 'marriage jokes' on Vikramaditya which carry meta baggage regarding Prabhas' own bachelorhood. These scenes with his own uncle Krishnam Raju (who plays Vikramaditya's guru Paramahamsa) come with warmth and self-deprecation that adds life to the film.

Radhe Shyam , like Saaho , seems to have been signed by a pre- Baahubali Prabhas and he had to scale up these films with simple outlines to match his image. But I'm glad he's done with both of them and now he can move on to the likes of Salaar with Prashant Neel, Spirit with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and Project K with Nag Ashwin. These filmmakers and films seemed to have come for the post- Baahubali Prabhas as opposed to ramping up older ideas for a newer image.

I look forward to that version of him because whatever this is, it's not dishing up films that are worth the hype.

They movie show there is respectable science called palmisty. <br/> But need to understand that the science does not change for the palmist . The science applies to all in the same way . . The director wasted his money ... you cannot change your destiny . The science is true but. You need to find a write palmist to read the palm

Prabhas Pooja Hegde starrer Radhe Shyam Movie Review

Radhe Shyam Movie Review in English

Radhe Shyam Movie Cast & Crew

Prabhas and Pooja Hegde's Radhe Shyam, the romantic drama, directed by Radha Krishna Kumar is out in theatres after a patient wait of more than 2 years. Being shot on a grand scale, the film has songs composed by Justin Prabhakaran, with the background score done by Thaman.

STORY: Vikram Aditya (Prabhas) is a world-renowned palmist who can predict the destiny of people and his predictions have never gone wrong. He doesn't need a relationship as he doesn't have love lines and instead wants a flirtationship, a commitment without love. However, Prerana (Pooja Hegde) helplessly falls in love with Vikram Aditya and so does he. Vikram predicts the destinies of him and Prerna and comes to the conclusion that they are not meant for each other. In this battle between love and destiny, which triumphs over the other forms the rest of the plot.

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES, & DIRECTION: Radhe Shyam has been written and executed in an ambitious manner and that is evident right from the beginning. The premise is quite impressive as the battle between love and destiny is interestingly etched out. The drama between both the leads keeps you glued to your screens, especially the pre-climax portions. The dialogues in Tamil are brilliantly written by Madhan Karky and one of the best lines in the film would be, "Kai illadhavangaluku future irukkadha?". The place where this dialogue is spoken makes it even more powerful. Despite being a regular love story, what makes the film stand out from the rest is its 'destiny' angle.  The moments where Prabhas reality hits Prabhas are effectively shot.

While these are the positives of the film, Radhe Shyam has its own set of worries as well. The film falls short on engagement heavily as a result of which you tend to get bored. A major chunk of the first half moves in an uninteresting fashion, while the initial portions of the latter half also have the same issue. The screenplay is not consistent enough to keep you completely hooked and it is mostly dull and flat. If the film had enough moments and high points to hold our attention, it would've triumphed as a truly epic love story. The staging of the romantic scenes is artificial and lacks an emotional depth.

A lot of work has gone into the climax ship sequence and it can be witnessed in the visuals. But even then, the sequence does not leave a bang-on impact on you, as Titanic did. With a better engaging screenplay and impressive narration, Radhe Shyam could have been a winner.     CAST:  Prabhas seems to have tried his potential best, but he looks tired and uneasy in a lot of scenes and this automatically leaves you disconnected from the character. However, the star actor must be applauded for boldly picking a script like this, an out and out romantic saga. Pooja Hegde is cuteness personified. The young actress looks adorable and puts out a lovable performance that holds your attention. In a love story of this grand scale, the chemistry between the lead pair is what will make the film appeal much better, but Radhe Shyam doesn't score full marks on that aspect.

The duo looks good together, but they do not manage to strike the chemistry one would hope. The soul is missing. Veterans like Sathyaraj and Jayaram are fine with their respective performances. The need for Jagapathi Babu's character is questionable as it doesn't have any major influence in the core proceedings.

TECHNICAL:  Radhe Shyam is a technically sound film. Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography is actually the main hero of the film. Radhe Shyam is a visual poetry that is aesthetic, grand, and enriching. The cinematography is well-aided by some great music - credits: Thaman, whose background score upholds the movie to a greater extent. Justin's songs are also likeable. Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao's edit is functional, but a film of this style needed much more effectiveness.

SO?  This Prabhas - Pooja Hegde starrer scores high points with its visuals, but turns out to be a middling affair on the whole.

Verdict Radhe Shyam is visually appealing, but falls short on emotions and engagement!

Radhe Shyam

Radhe shyam.

Romance
NaN

Radhe Shyam is a love story set in the ’70s. After informing the Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, that she’s going to declare Emergency, palmist Vikramaditya ( Prabhas ) goes to Europe on a prolonged trek, before coming to Rome to be with his mother (Bhagyashree) and best friend (Kunaal Roy Kapur). He doesn’t believe in love as he doesn’t have a love line in his hand. So he hooks up with a lot of girls but a deeper commitment is beyond him. Prerana (Pooja Hegde), a doctor working with her uncle (Sachin Khedekar) in a high class hospital has a death wish of sorts in the sense that she tells strangers on trains to hold her as she leans out of open doors. Once, she asks Aditya to help her out in the stunt and despite knowing that he can’t fall in love, he finds his heart beating for her. Prerna suffers from an incurable disease and doesn’t have long to live. But Aditya informs her that she’ll get cured and lead a long life. Her uncle is convinced Aditya is a fraud, till Aditya gives him proof of his prowess. Aditya leaves Prerana as he knows he doesn’t have a future with her. His guru, Paramhansa (Sathyaraj) tells him that no science is exact and astrology is also only 99 per cent accurate. And destiny can change if one puts in a big enough effort. How Aditya battles his destiny to win over his love forms the crux of the film.

The film is replete with gothic elements. Haunting music is played whenever Sachin Khedekar enters. One thinks he’s some mad scientist conducting some nefarious experiments in the dungeons of his hospital. The hospital too gives off a haunted castle vibe. Same is the case with Jagapathi Babu’s character. One thinks he’s some evil megalomaniac all set to take over the world, given the way he’s introduced. But he’s only a golf-playing industrialist with not one evil thought in mind. Murali Sharma plays Pooja Hegde’s father but for some reason hasn’t been given a speaking role. Actually, apart from Prabhas and Pooja Hegde , the rest of the cast don’t speak much in this 140 minute movie. Jayaram, who plays a ship’s captain and Sachin Khedekar, who becomes more lamb-like as the film progresses, are the two exceptions. There’s only a ten year gap between Prabhas and Bhagyashree’s ages, so why she was cast as his mother is beyond comprehension. To make a film about the conflict between palmistry and free will in this day and age also doesn’t make sense. Some sequences just drag on and should have been trimmed.

The film has been lavishly mounted and its visual splendour is a sight to behold. Kudos to cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa for capturing Europe so enchantingly. And applause also should be directed towards the VFX team who have convincingly managed to recreate choppy seas and the spectacular overview of a ship slowly sinking. This grand sequence, which comes towards the end, truly elevates the film. Hummable numbers by Mithoon, Amaal Malik and Mahan Bhardwaj too serve the film nicely.

Prabhas, who is more known for his action films, makes a fine transition into a romantic actor. There’s no denying his larger-than-life screen presence or earthy charm. And he’s made sure his mass audience sees him doing action as well. The stunts set in the sea are well-choreographed indeed. He does share a certain chemistry with Pooja Hegde. The two look good together as a couple. Pooja looks ethereal even as a cancer patient. The camera seems to be in love with her for sure. She’s so pretty that one wonders why Prabhas’s character wants to ditch her. We’d love to see her and Prabhas do another, better written, love story together.

Radhe Shyam is a lopsided film. The visual spectacle and the efforts of the good-looking leads are undermined by the weak script. It could have been a classic goth love story but director Radha Krishna Kumar only hinted at it in the beginning but later abandoned the idea. He does know how to mount a film on a big scale but needs to work on his writing.

All-in-all, watch it for the fresh pairing and the picture postcard visuals, and that terrific climax set at the sea…

Radhe Shyam Review

What's Behind

Pan India Star Prabhas' Radhe Shyam, the most awaited film across the country released on March 11,2022 in a spectacular manner. Expectations are soaring high as Prabhas is doing the period romantic entertainer after attaining pan India stardom. Let us see what impact Radhe Shyam made on movie lovers.

Story Review

Vikramaditya (Prabhas) is a renowned palmist who flies to Italy after predicting to the then Indian PM Indira Gandhi (Flora Jacob), that she would impose an emergency in the country soon. Vikramaditya who knows that he has no 'love line' in his life, believes in flitration and he falls in love with a gorgeous girl Dr.Prerana (Pooja Hegde). Vikramaditya however comes to know about the shocking secret about Prerana. To find out what it is and whether Vikramaditya's predictions about his love life turn out to be true and the result of the war between love and destiny, enjoy Radhe Shyam on the silver screen.

Artists, Technicians Review

Radha Krishna Kumar developed the story penned by Chandrasekhar Yeleti. The idea of showing Prabhas in the role of a palmist is certainly novel. He took his own sweet time establishing the characters of Prabhas and Prerana and then took pains to drive home the central point ' love vs destiny' and '1%' who think differently can change destiny. He failed to execute the novel idea in an effective manner. he spent the entire first half introducing various characters and except for Prabhas and Pooja Hegde's characters, none of them generate interest. Be it Sachin Khedekar, Jagapathi Babu, they fail to connect chords. Much to the disappointment of all, Prabhas and Pooja Hegde's chemistry went missing throughout the film. While Prabhas worked hard to cast a magic spell as the lover boy role in the romantic avatar, Pooja Hegde failed to compliment him. Even in the songs, the same is visible. The train episode leading to the interval increases the curiosity levels and sets the stage for the second half. But the narration once again deviates and slips down sailing at the snail's pace in the second half till the climax. People get excited as the much-talked-about ship episode commences. But for all the hype the Radhe Shyam lacked the substance and soul. The story turned out to be weak and the screenplay went awry along with the direction.

Prabhas in the first place should be complimented for taking a huge risk doing the romantic entertainer putting his hard-earned mass image at stake. He did full justice to his role. He played the role of a youngster who can predict the future of anyone as a palmist and as a young man show fall in love despite knowing his future. He showed variations in his expressions and emotions. For all the scares of Prabhas' look, he looked very handsome and charming. However, at the end of the second half, he looked jaded, tired, and aged. It seems the pressures of doing a romantic entertainer took a heavy toll of him. Even the rumors of lack of chemistry and rift between Prabhas and Pooja Hegde seemed to be true. There are no such romantic scenes that elevated the chemistry of Prabhas and Pooja Hegde on the screen. Prabhas expressed well as a lover boy in the film.

Pooja Hegde looked gorgeous on-screen and came with good expressions.  She failed to elevate the emotions along with Prabhas. The romantic feel between Pooja Hegde and Prabhas that is important for a romantic entertainer like Radhe Shyam went missing completely. This undid the film in a major way. Krishnam Raju played an important role as a spiritual guru of Prabhas. Actors like Bhagyasree, Jagapathi Babu, Murali Sharma, Sachin Khedekar, Priyadarshi, Sathyan, Riddhi Kumar, Jayaram, Flora Jacob, Sasha Chetri played according to their roles. They just appear in a few scenes and disappear only to appear after some time. Kunal Roy Kapoor as the friend of Prabhas got on the nerves of the viewers. He is the one who killed the film to the maximum. Bhagyasree looked odd and irritating though she was shown as a classical dancer. Her makeup did not suit and the scenes of her along with Prabhas tested the patience of the viewers. Riddhi Kumar played an important role that turned the film's story. Jayaram's role irritated the viewers. Sachin Khedekar is ok to some extent and so too is Jagapathi Babu. Most of their roles are inconsequential.

Justin Prabhakaran's songs are melodious and are beautifully picturized. His music is soulful and highlighted the romantic feel. But they could have been done in an even better manner. Thaman's background music created magic. He powered the scenes to another level. Even when the stars are not present, he with his background music conveyed the emotions and feelings on the screen. Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao left a lot to be desired. There are many scenes that slowed the pace of the film which in turn impact the tempo. Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography is of high standards. All the scenes are showcased on screen in a visually powerful and wonderful manner mesmerizing movie lovers. Cinematography formed the soul of the film. Production values are grand.

Rating Analysis

Prabhas's period romantic entertainer Radhe Shyam is loaded with visual extravaganza, beautiful soul-stirring music, and background score along with interesting points touching upon the war between love and destiny. However, Radha Krishna Kumar, while concentrating on highlighting all these elements, failed to elevate the romantic feel and chemistry between the lead pair. The missing emotional connect, romantic feel coupled with the weak narration, screenplay, and direction along with cliched scenes spoiled what could have been a classic romantic flick.

'Radhe Shyam' movie review: Stellar Prabhas headlines impressive romantic drama

Follow Us :

Director: Radha Krishna Kumar Cast: Prabhas, Pooja Hegde, Jagapathi Babu and Sathyaraj Language: Hindi Rating: 3.5/5 Pan-India star Prabhas' latest movie Radhe Shyam is an ambitious romantic drama that hits the right notes due to the Baahubali hero's stellar performance and director Radha Krishna Kumar's grand vision. It, however, caters exclusively to a class audience. The biggie revolves around a legendary palmist, played by 'Darling, who has the ability to accurately predict the future. He indulges in plain and simple 'flirtationship' as he is not 'destined' to fall in love. His world is turned upside down when he meets and falls for Pooja Hegde's Prerna, a doctor with a tragic secret. The rest of the narrative focuses on the ultimate 'war between love and destiny'.

Also Read | 'Radhe Shyam' box office preview: Will Prabhas score a 'Baahubalian' blockbuster with his new movie? Prabhas woos his 'Juliet' in style The premise is quite compelling as it pretty much as everything--right from memorable dialogues to an emotional climax-- that one expects from a romantic drama. It luckily reaches its potential due to the slightly flawed yet effective execution. A romantic drama can strike a chord with the audience only if the lead pair's chemistry packs a punch. Take the Tamil film 96 for instance. The Vijay Sethupathi-starrer emerged as a blockbuster despite the fact that its basic plot, which revolved around two college sweethearts, wasn't something extraordinary as one could really relate to the sweet and simple reel dynamics between Ram and Jaanu. This is exactly where Radhe Shyam excels. Prabhas and Pooja's romantic sequences, which feature references to '97 kisses' and 'dying for love' are a treat for the audience. A scene set in a bus, in particular, takes one's breath away and that too quite literally, proving to be a treat for those fond of old school romance. Effective interval block The interval block has always been an integral part of commercial cinema. In an ideal scenario, this scene needs to pique curiosity and set the stage for what is to follow. The one seen in Radhe Shyam does just that as it highlights the vulnerable sides of both characters. Prabhas' monologue about destiny and god's will being mightier than medical science makes the desired impact as his rich deep voice exudes passion, something that he didn't bring to the table in certain scenes in Saaho . Weakish second half, good climax Radhe Shyam falters a bit after the intermission as certain portions of the second half drag and feels stretched, slowing down the film. As result, the whole track involving an attempt to change destiny does fall flat. Similarly, Sathyaraj's character doesn't really add much to the narrative, which is disappointing as 'Katappa' was the surprise package of the Baahubali franchise. Radhe Shyam , however, regains its mojo once the action shifts to the ship that was previously, rather prominently, in the trailer. While these sequences aren't perfect and may even feel a bit OTT, the intention of their scale alone makes this a much grander effort than Darling and Mr Perfect . Prabhas at his best Coming to the performances, Prabhas--who received flak for his work in Saaho --silences his detractors with Radhe Shyam. The Mirchi hero is perceived to be a shy and fun-loving person in real life. And, the makers of the UV Creations-backed biggie play up this image quite well in the first half. His dreamy expressions in some of the romantic scenes are a treat for his 'Darlings'. Prabhas is ably supported by Pooja, who plays one charming 'Juliet' with full sincerity. She adds depth to emotional scenes, bringing out the trauma experienced by her character. She makes a stronger impact here than Tamannaah and Disha Patani did in Baahubali and Radhe , respectively. Sachin Khedekar plays the role of a caring father figure with the type of effortlessness he brought to the table in Antim . Veterans such as Murli Sharma and Jagapathi Babu are, unfortunately, burdened with insignificant roles that don't do justice to their abilities. The same applies to tthe likes of Bhagyashree and Kunaal Roy Kapur. Meaningful dialogues, hummable songs Commercial films often feature dialogues that compel fans to get into 'seetimaar' mode but don't really add much to the narrative. The 'die-hard fans' line from Sarah is a case in point. Radhe Shyam is an exception as each line, especially the 'Romeo' reference, adds depth to the narrative. Songs such as Jaan Hai Meri and Aashiqui Aa Gayi have tremendous situational appeal, which makes the reel love story all the more alluring. The other technical aspects are up to the mark.

‘Radhe Shyam’ movie review: Visual aesthetics and little else

A shallow story and lacklustre screenplay make pooja hegde and prabhas’ ‘radhe shyam’ a colossal bore.

Updated - March 12, 2022 06:07 pm IST

Published - March 11, 2022 02:54 pm IST

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo

Pooja Hegde and Prabhas star in 'Radhe Shyam' | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT

At the end of Radhe Shyam , what stayed with me were its picture perfect frames that were painstakingly made to look like paintings. Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, production designer Raveender Reddy and costume designers Thota Vijayabhaskar and Eka Lakhani create the mood for an epic fairytale. But how long can one soak in the atmosphere, admiring the columns of light that pour through tall windows and the long corridors of the hospital and the homes in Italy? Sure, the film boasts of Prabhas and Pooja Hegde who have a good screen presence. But the soul of the film, the story, is flaky. What is meant to be an aching romance of two people racing against destiny turns out to be bland and listless.

In this period drama set in the 1970s, the protagonist Vikramaditya (Prabhas) is positioned as ‘the Einstein of palmistry’. His guru Paramahamsa (Krishnam Raju in the Telugu version; Sathyaraj in other versions) is consulted by a team of Indian space scientists before a mission. The guru understands a scientist’s scepticism of palmistry, astrology and related practices. He cites the example of Arundhati and Vashista stars being known long before they were discovered by modern science; there are things beyond human comprehension, he says, thus setting the tone for events that unfold later.

Radhe Shyam

Cast: prabhas, pooja hegde, direction: radha krishna kumar, music: justin prabhakaran, s s thaman.

Vikramaditya carries forward the guru’s legacy and early on in the film, reads Indira Gandhi’s palm and predicts that she is going to declare Emergency! Later, there is a passing photographic reference of John Lennon taking Vikramaditya’s autograph. Radhe Shyam might have done away with stunt sequences one would find in a star film, but tries to create a halo around Prabhas’s character through such sketchy sequences.

Scratch beneath this layer of heroism and Vikramaditya comes across as a guy who has surrendered to the diktats of destiny. The way he indulges in casual relationships, which he terms as ‘flirtationships’, is a clue that he is commitment phobic with good reason. Ultimately, of course, he falls in love when he meets the exuberant but mysterious Dr Prerna (Pooja Hegde), who also runs a mile from relationships.

The beautifully mounted ‘Ee Rathale’ (composed by Justin Prabhakaran) serves to show how the two who are destined to not meet or fall in love, continue to cross paths. In portions like this, the film manages to create some magic. Vikramaditya and Prerna’s courtship happens amid hints being dropped about what makes them the way they are. It is also punctuated by banal comic portions in a hospital ward.

The film wastes a bunch of talented actors, making them merely stand by and utter a line or two. Sachin Khedekar at least gets something to do. Jayaram, Jagapathi Babu and Priyadarshi are wasted. The one who is wasted the most is Murali Sharma, and that too saddled with a bad wig. Kunaal Roy Kapur and Bhagyashree also have nothing much to do and were perhaps roped in to have familiar faces for the Hindi audiences.

For the first hour or so, the aesthetic visuals, the music (background score by S S Thaman) and the lead actors who are made to look picture-perfect, accentuate the dreamy setting. Pooja Hegde looks every bit the princess and in later portions, shows a glimpse of her acting potential that is waiting to be tapped. Prabhas is effective in his portrayal, but there isn’t much in the story or characterisation that challenges him as an actor.

When the conflict between destiny and love takes centrestage, the film begins to lose whatever little charm it had. The biggest issue with Radhe Shyam is that it never sucks you in. The ship sequence at the fag end of the film sinks an already shaky film, despite Prabhas being made to scale a tall ship in a Baahubalian manner.

The parallels with Mani Ratnam’s Geethanjali are also tough to shake off. The journeys of the two lovers against what destiny has in store for them can be viewed as a hat tip to that iconic romance. While Geethanjali also rode on a premise that required suspension of disbelief, it was all heart and made us root for the protagonists. Radhe Shyam could have benefited with some of that soul in its writing.

'Radhe Shyam' Review: Mystic Astro-Love

'Radhe Shyam' Review: Mystic Astro-Love

Movie: Radhe Shyam Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: UV Creations Cast: Prabhas, Pooja Hegde, Krishnam Raju, Bhagyashree, Sachin Khedekar, Kunal Roy Kapur, Priyadarsi, Jagapathi Babu, Murli Sharma, Riddhi Kumar, Sasha Chettri, and others. Music: Justin Prabhakaran Cinematography: Manoj Paramahamsa Production designer: R Raveendar Editor: Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao Sound: Resul Pookutty Producers: Vamsi, Pramod and Praseedha Written and Directed by: Radha Krishna Kumar Release Date: March 11, 2022

Prabhas is one of India’s biggest superstars. With his tall and handsome looks, he has already proved that he can effortlessly switch from action roles to romantic characters.

After an action film like “Saaho”, Prabhas has now come up with a pure romantic tale. “Radhe Shyam” has been aggressively promoted as a romantic thriller, and the film’s promotions have generated tremendous hype.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: The story is set in the mid-1970s. Vikramaditya (Prabhas), the Einstein of palmistry, falls in love with Prerana (Pooja Hegde) at first sight. She works as a doctor in Rome. Vikramaditya can predict the future. He never gets it wrong.

Such a renowned palmist is in love with a girl, who as per doctors, might not live long. She is suffering from an incurable tumor.

What will be the fate of their love story? Can fate be changed?

Artistes’ Performances: The best part of the film is Prabhas looking at his dashing best. He is handsome and classy. His screen presence is fabulous. There are no fights in the film, but he gets a couple of emotional moments to showcase his performance skills.

Pooja Hegde is so beautiful. As Prerana, she is ravishing and fits the character well. She looks fresh as a daisy.

Krishnam Raju as a blind astrology guru brings gravitas. Jagapathi Babu, though a short role, made some impact.

Bhagya Shree also made her good screen presence but the emotional connect with the protagonist is not established much.

Purpose of Kunal Kapoor's character is not served at all.

Sachin Khedekar as Pooja’s uncle is the only noticeable actor among scores of actors, who get nothing much to do than stand for scenes.

Technical Excellence: The striking part is Manoj’s cinematography besides production design. Art Director Ravinder has created some stunning sets.

Justin Prabhakaran’s music is a weak thread to this visually alluring movie. “Ee Raathale” and “Nagumomu” have worked better on audio but they fail to create the same impact with video. Better songs would have made a lot of difference.

Thaman’s background score helped the film to the best.

Highlights: Lavish visuals Grand production design/values Prabhas and Pooja Hegde’s looks Some poetic moments

Drawback: Weak songs  No multiple dimensions

Analysis The much-hyped Prabhas starrer “Radhe Shyam” is an out-and-out love story. There are no fights. There’s no villain in this love story either, other than fate. The conflict also arises from destiny, not from humans. In a way, the love story doesn’t follow a regular formula.

We have seen several films based on the concept of reincarnation. Now this is a love story set in the backdrop of palmistry and astrology. That's the point of difference with regard to novelty.

The let down in this heavy budget film is not giving room for seasoned actors to perform.  Bhagyashree is shown as Prabhas’s mother and also a classical dancer. Apart from getting three or four scenes, she gets nothing in the story. The purpose of her presence in this story is not established. There is a character played by Kunal Roy Kapoor who also appears in two scenes. Priyadarshi does appear as one of the many doctors.

Not developing proper characterizations to all these characters shows a thumsdown to the director.

Not to say that the movie is bereft of interesting moments. The conversation between Prabhas and Krishnam Raju about palmistry and astrology, and the episode involving Riddhi Kumar and the train sequence hold our interest. Pooja Hegde finding the twist is also another beautiful moment.

For any love story, the songs pump in life. Right from Geetanjali and Sakhi of Manirathnam to the recent Love Story of Sekhar Kammula, songs play a crucial role in making the love stories touch the hearts and souls of the audience.

“Radhe Shyam” ends up with miserably ordinary songs.

Plus, the film’s 1970s period setting has no relevance to the main conflict/story. The entire attempt looks pretentious and superficial. It didn't serve the purpose other than shooting up the making budget.

“Radhe Shyam” is one of the costliest productions in Indian cinema. No wonder the film has stunning visual and production values. But beneath the glossy veneer, the film looks shallow.

This is only for the multiplex audience but not to the single screens. The masses hardly connect to this astro-based love. Making this film with a pan Indian mass hero like Prabhas may prove wrong commercially. But it is sure that this film may be liked by the audience who hold faith in astrology. In fact, this film scores more points as an astrological film than as a love story.

Bottom line: Thin Love Line

Radhe Shyam is one film which has been in the making for a long time now. The film starring Prabhas and Pooja Hegde has been released with a solid hype today and let’s see how it is.

The film is set in Europe, 1976. Vikram Aditya(Prabhas) is a renowned Palmist who does not believe in love. But destiny makes him meet Prerana(Pooja Hegde). Both fall for each other instantly. But as Vikram Aditya predicts his future, he leaves Prerana and moves to London. What did Vikram know about his future? Why does he not believe in love? What is destiny in-store for Vikram and Prerana? To know all this, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

Plus Points:

Prabhas is back as a lover boy after a long time and there was some tension as to how he would manage this role. But Prabhas lives up to all the hype and looks handsome in the film. His costumes, body language, and performance are a big highlight of Radhe Shyam.

Pooja Hegde gets her career best role as Prerana and is gorgeous in the film. Her dubbing, screen presence and chemistry with Prabhas is also quite good in the film. She had a challenging role and Pooja Hegde gave her best.

The film is made on a rich scale and that is shown in every scene. The grandeur, set work, locales, and colorful visuals are quite pleasing to the eyes. Jagapathi Babu is decent in his role and legendary Krishnam Raju’s presence will make fans happy. The conflict point that is revealed in the second half looks good.

Minus Points:

One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is slow pace. As it is a love story, things happen on a very slow note and this might hurt the fans a bit. There are no standout moments in the romance and the chemistry between Pooja Hegde and Prabhas looks forced in a few scenes.

The film fails in the emotional department as the pain in the love story is missing in a many scenes. The film has a very predictable storyline and there are not many twists in the love story and because of this, the drama looks weak in the second half.

The so called ship based climax does not have anything interesting to showcase and is ended abruptly. When it comes to love stories, songs play a major role but the songs in Radhe Shyam are disappointing to say the least.

The supporting cast does not have anything to do. Bhagyashree is wasted in her role and so is Kunal Roy Kapoor. Murali Sharma does not event get a single dialogue. Why Prabhas lives a certain life style and why he does not make use of the palmistry to understand the issues in love story looks a bit illogical.

Technical Aspects:

Production values by UV creations are top notch as the visuals are quite rich. The camerawork nicely showcases the bygone era and Italy in a beautiful manner. As said earlier, the music of the film is quite disappointing but Thaman’s BGM is very good and elevates many scenes. The editing is just about okay. The costume design is amazing as Prabhas and Pooja Hegde have been styled superbly.

The production design by Manoj Paramahamsa is stunning as the European set up has been created quite effectively. The artwork, sets and props used are very good and so was the VFX work. The lyrics for the songs are neat.

Coming to the director Radha Krishna, he has done just a passable job with the film. Though the story is ordinary, he has set it up in an interesting premise. Had he elevated the drama even more in the second half, things would have been quite effective. The way he has designed Prabhas’ character is quite good.

On the whole, Radhe Shyam is an urban romantic drama with an interesting premise and grand visuals. Prabhas and Pooja Hegde shoulder the film with their sincere performances. But the slow narration, lack of strong drama and rushed climax spoil the mood a bit. If you go in with low expectations, you will connect to this love story and it’s grandeur.

Baahubali made Prabhas a pan-India star and Prabhas’s market has grown multiple folds ever since. After Saaho’s not-so-expected result, Prabhas is coming back to theaters almost after three years with a love story, Radhe Shyam. Prabhas has been promoting the movie as an Indian cinema and is releasing in multiple languages.

Radhe Shyam is a period romantic drama set in Europe. The trailer gives us many glimpses with a revelation that the story is all about the biggest war between love and destiny. Prabhas will be appearing as a famous palmist and Pooja Hegde will be seen as his love interest.

The trailer also gives us a glance at the super classy making and we have to see if the story keeps it up. We have not seen Prabhas in a complete love story for a long time, and let us see if Radhe Shyam is a perfect gear shift for Prabhas’s action mode and how the audience receives it.

Well, the movie is in theaters today, and here is the review from one of the US premieres. Let us check it out if it really is visual poetry as said by many.

What Is It About?

A renowned palmist Vikram Aditya (Prabhas) who believes he has no love lines on his palm, falls in love with Prerna (Pooja Hegde), a doctor by profession. Vikram Aditya predicts a full and happy life for Prerna but the latter has got a strong health reason to believe his prediction is wrong. Will the prediction of Vikram Aditya, which was never wrong, win? What will Prerna learn about Vikram Aditya’s ‘no love lines’? Is the Einstein of Palmistry wrong or right or both? The ultimate war between their love and destiny is what Radhe Shyam is all about.

Performances

Prabhas did well as the famous palmist. He excels in his role and also the romantic scenes. There are no muscle-flexing scenes and neither is the need for them. He is known to the Telugu audience in these kinds of roles, but we have to see how it goes with the other language audience who know him as the mighty Baahubali.

It is an undeniable fact that Prabhas has lost the charm and looks that he had for and before Baahubali. Though he looked extremely stylish in most of Radhe Shyam, the missing charm can be noticed here and there.

Pooja Hegde looks sharp and very beautiful. She is fine in her role as Prerna. She has done these sorts of roles and it is a cakewalk for her.

Satya Raj appears in a short yet crucial role as Paramahamsa, the guru of Vikram Aditya. It looks like Satyaraj will be seen in Telugu version for US release alone, while Krishnam Raju will be playing the same role for the screening in India. Satyaraj is good as Pramahamsa.

Sachin Khedkar is okay in his role as Prerna’s uncle, which Murli Sharma and others hardly got any dialogue. Jayaram and Jagapathi Babu appeared in pure guest roles. Bhagyashree and Kunaal Roy Kapoor’s roles were very artificial and it doesn’t make any difference without them. It looks like they were included in the cast just to embrace the Bollywood audience.

Priyadarshi and others are okay in supporting roles.

Technicalities

Radhe Shyam is truly a visual delight with captivating frames, hands-down. The vintage lavish sets and the beautiful locales of Torino, Pisa, Georgia, and Rome in Europe are a treat to the eyes.

The songs are beautifully pictured and the background score is perfect as well. Editing is fine and so is the screenplay. The climax ship episode is much-hyped but it fails to live up to the expectations. Rather than gripping, it looks more on the forced way.

Prabhas Visuals

Thumbs Down

The slow pace in second half Missing chemistry between lead pair Boring narration

Radhe Shyam has got a simple yet intriguing storyline. A palmist who believes his prediction is inevitable has to question the same after he falls in love. In the war between love and destiny, he believes in destiny but takes the side of love.

The director Radha Krishna Kumar stayed with the interesting genre all along, but the narrative went flat with it. The love story and the establishment in the first half go fine until we realize that the spark or the chemistry between the lead pair is missing. Both Prabhas and Pooja Hegde looks great together on screen, but we will not be able to feel the magic between them.

The main point unravels by the interval and the narration goes dead-slow from thereon. While the prediction power of Vikram Aditya is well established with words like ‘Einstein of Palmistry’, Indira Gandhi’s scene, and the train scene, the episode of Jagapathi Babu is clearly predictable.

There are few terribly bad comedy scenes like death-yoga in the hospital and Jayaram’s nosophobia scenes. Avoiding them completely could have been better. Bhagyasree and Kunaal Roy Kapoor looked more like guests at Prabhas’s house than the family. The scenes and conversations between them look unnatural.

The director solely depended on the grandeur to essay the tale, which left the movie just with the good visuals. From the love story to the good-bye scenes, the hospital scenes to the ship-Tsunami scenes, the depth could not be felt nor the emotion. The departing appears strictly a scene after scene thing, rather than being touchy. The ship episode and the Tsunami were much-hyped but looked forced and unimpressive to the point.

There are some good dialogues like ‘knowing that the future is good kills the surprise and learning that that future is bad kills the hope’ and also the archer aspirant asking ‘if a person without a hand cannot have a future. There is one from Prerna asking Vikram Aditya if he had looked for her love line in his palm instead of his. Overall, for a movie lover, Radhe Shyam gives thought-flashes of Geetanjali and Final Destination, but it is nowhere near them.

Director Chandrasekhar Yeleti wrote the storyline of Radhe Shyam eighteen years back and now the director Radha Krishna added his idea of climax for it. The ‘one percent’ logic he brings up regarding the people who write their own destiny and the ’99 percent science’ concept of Satya Raj are the supporting statements brought up by the director to convince ‘Radhe Shyam’. By the end, the logic does not appear extraordinary and the so-called war looks stale.

Having said that, Radhe Shyam is not just a war between love and destiny, but also a war between grandeur and storytelling, where the latter lost it to the former. Finally, Radhe Shyam is a failed jyothishyam and we have to see if audience can change its destiny.

Bottom line: Only Drusyam, No Kavyam

Rating: 2.5/5

Radhe Shyam Review

Rebelstar Prabhas is testing his luck after three years with Radhe Shyam . Made on a massive budget, this romantic entertainer is directed by Radha Krishna Kumar. Prabhas and Pooja Hegde looked pretty on screen in this big-budget romantic saga produced by UV Creations, T Series, and Gopikrishna Movies. The trailer and the songs generated positive buzz on the film. Here is the review of Radhe Shyam

Set in 1976, Vikram Aditya is a top league palmist – visited by bigwigs including the Indian Prime Minister to know what lies in their future. Without no apparent reason, he disappears from India and is seen living life to the fullest in Italy. He meets Dr. Prerana (Pooja Hedge) and love blossoms between them. Despite dire prognosis from multiple doctors on her illness, Aditya assures Prerna that she will have a long full life. They say that the stars dictate our lives, can we really travel a non-fated path? The rest of the movie shows us.

Radhe Shyam has an interesting story and large canvas to write it on.The Director Radha Krishna Kumar takes on a journey to his imaginative world of Vikram Aditya and Prerana – two star crossed lovers. The opening sequences are designed to capture the attention of viewers with fairy tale-like visuals and soothing music. Prabhas’s introduction song ‘Chalo Chalo Sanchari’ visuals are super grandeur and Dr. Prerana’s introduction is a very close second. A few episodes later, we see the song ‘Evaro nivvevaro’ – another melody. Sailing as a smooth classy love story takes a turn with the attempted comedy in the hospital episodes – we are using the word comedy very loosely here. Prabhas’s mother’s role is half baked and you have wonder why even have that role and waste someone as talented as renowned actress Bhagyashri in that role. Kunal Roy Kapur as Aditya’s friend in Italy is a miscast and annoying. Eventually, we come to the ‘Nagumomu Tarale’ song – another artistic number. Pre-interval episodes are good in showcasing Vikram Aditya’s prowess in palmistry. Overall, the first half is engaging enough with few complaints. A minor tussle with business tycoon Jagapathi Babu goes unexplored.

The film is set against the backdrop of palmistry being superior to science, that even human thoughts are predetermined. With Aditya predicting that Prerana will live a full life and him never being wrong in his predictions the movie leads into an interesting conundrum – his love for her to live long and the turns in his own life. The much talked about tsunami episode is shot with enormous effort but does not have much impact due the complicated plot development.

The soul of the film is missing in the second half which makes this extravaganza production a dull watch by the time we get to the climax. This film may have a “relatively better” overall feel in the Hindi language due to factors like casting, better songs in Hindi. The technical team has delivered an outstanding output but there isn’t a thread to tie them together. The artwork, set designs, locations, production, and music are all good individually but slow-paced, soul-lacking plot fails to appeal to the audience. Production house UV Creations and Gopikrishna films mounted this film at Hollywood standards at times, but it falls flat with the poor narration. Background score by S. Thaman is top class, soothing music by Justin Prabhakaran is good as well.

Performances:

Prabhas looks wise is just fine as Vikram Aditya, but the characterization does not match his macho star image – with film being an out and out love story. At times, he appears uncomfortable as Vikram Aditya. Pooja Hegde looks at her best as Dr.Prerana and acted well. Satyaraj plays Aditya’s guru Paramahamsa. Other character artists Sachin Khederkar, Murali Sharma, Jayaram and comedian Priyadarshini have very limited screen time.

Positives :

• Artistic and visual grandeur • Prabhas and Pooja screen presence • Technical brilliance • Different premise than run of the mill love stories

Negatives :

• Superficial and boring second half • Lack of soul in the story • Poor narration

Verdict : Radhe Shyam’s first half is artistic and visually splendid. However, the superficial second half is slow paced and convoluted. This film’s interesting premise, soulful music, and extravaganza production can bring class audience to give this film a try. Overall, Radhe Shyam is a passable film only for a subset of the audience.

Radhe Shyam movie review and release highlights: Fans in awe of their ‘Darling’ Prabhas, despite mixed reactions

Radhe shyam movie review and release live updates: radhe shyam, starring prabhas, pooja hegde, sachin khedekar, bhagyashree and murli sharma among others, has got its worldwide release on march 11. here's what fans and celebrities are saying about the film..

radheshyam movie review and rating

Radhe Shyam , starring Prabhas and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles, is out in theaters. The film is said to be set in the backdrop of 1970’s Europe, and going by the trailer, Prabhas plays a renowned palm reader. However, while he is a master at predicting the future of other people, he might have misunderstood his own fate, which leads to a ‘war between love and destiny’.

Written and directed by Radha Krishna Kumar, the movie also stars Sachin Khedekar, Sathyaraj, Priyadarshi Pulikonda, Bhagyashree, Murli Sharma, Kunaal Roy Kapoor, Riddhi Kumar, Sasha Chettri and Sathyan.

Film trade analysts expect the Prabhas film to set cash registers ringing. Taran Adarsh told  indianexpress.com , “Prabhas has been a big star who has given superhits Baahubali, Baahubali 2 and Saaho. Saaho, irrespective of the merits of the film, opened to fantastic numbers, as such is the craze of Prabhas. I am expecting a fantastic opening for Radhe Shyam.”

A Twitter user @amigo_mback wrote, "Honest review.. #RadheShyam is a brilliant film!! Except for the comedy bit which they tried but didn't work that well, there is really nothing to complain about. Brilliant cinematography, screenplay, performances and best of all music."

Fans couldn't hold their happiness on the release of Radhe Shyam.

The praise and the references to Baahubali continues to dominate the conversation around Prabhas, who now stars in romantic drama Radhe Shyam. The actor said that Baahubali is and will always be an inseparable part of his life.

Fans went berserk in several cinema halls seeing Prrabhas on the big screen.

Trade guru Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#OneWordReview... #RadheShyam *#Hindi*: DISAPPOINTING. Rating: ??? Interesting ideas don’t necessarily translate into interesting films… #RadheShyam has it all, but it misfires in one major department: Poor writing… Doesn’t meet the humongous expectations. #RadheShyamReview."

Prabhas told indianexpress.com about the pressure that comes with being the Baahubali of Hindi cinema. He also says that SS Rajamouli directorial is attached to his identity even if it bogs him down sometimes. How does he handle the stress of living up to Baahubali’s success, the face of pan-India films?

Read our exclusive interview here

According to AndhraBoxOffice.com, the movie’s theatrical rights has fetched about Rs 210 crores. Of which, more than Rs 100 crore has come from selling distribution rights in the Telugu states.

How does one match the global success of Baahubali: The Conclusion? SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus showed us the true box office potential of a pan-Indian film in our country, and Prabhas was the face of that humongous success. But it seems every film of Prabhas is now expected to recreate the same success. Even if it’s not explicitly said out loud, this seems to be on everyone’s mind.

Several female fans were caught celebrating while watching Radhe Shyam in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.

Another user @AR_PrabhasDarlu tweeted, "Prabhas has the guts to attempt a love story like this when his contemporaries are busy in only typical commercial films. We need more such films like #RadheShyam to elevate the standard of Indian Cinema. #BlockBusterRadheShyam #RadheShyamReview."

Twitter user named @NishitShawHere had a different opinion. He wrote, "Like I said, #Prabhas is a synonym to the word GRAND but in #RadheShyam he has underperformed as an actor. He makes the film unwatchable. #RadheShyamHindi is an EXPENSIVE VIDEO with elements of Indian TV SERIAL…GRAND-DISASTER… Highly unconvincing."

Twitter user @dr_SaiKrishna wrote, "Loved the tale of 2 characters Adithya & Prerna. As usual @hegdepooja steals the show with her charm & dubbing. Madam Thope Anthey??. A Twitter user, @varunkilaru posted, "#RadheShyam - @hegdepooja looks beautiful as always but for the 1st time, her screen presence overpowers the audience into gluing their eyes to the screen.. Very rare for an Indian actress n I hope she keeps it going!"

Indian Express Film Critic Shubhra Gupta gave the film one star and wrote in her Radhe Shyam review, "Why did Prabhas agree to do this bizarre rigmarole? Who knows?." She added, "Prabhas-starrer expects us to swallow, hook, line and so many sinkers, and we are constantly collecting our jaws off the floor." READ RADHE SHYAM FULL REVIEW HERE

Sridevi Sreedhar shared on Twitter, "#RadheShyam: It is the technical aspects that saves this romantic drama which is mounted on a huge canvas scale. @manojdft’s camerawork and @justin_tunes music are a major plus. #Prabhas ?? @hegdepooja looks wow and has given a neat performance??."

Radha Krishna explained why he chose Radhe Shyam as his second film, "I worked as a writer and assistant director with director Chandrasekhar Yeleti, and we both worked on the story idea for a long time but failed to come up with a conclusion. It is a story that has increased my love for cinema. So, when I thought of doing my second film, I thought to work on this story once again. Luckily, I was able to come up with the conclusion for it within six months." Read full interview here

Before Baahubali, he didn’t have to drive futuristic cars in the narrow streets of Hyderabad, or his movies didn’t need to have exotic animals like ostrich, pythons, jaguars for us to feel thrilled to watch him on the big screen. We were quite in awe of his towering height and broad physique. He was a trend-setter when it came to fashion for a generation of boys who went to college in the 2000s. There seemed to be no pressure to do something out of the ordinary, or just trot around glossy buildings and expensive furniture. Saaho was all about making us feel amazed by the props used in the movie, and it did little to honour the relationship that the audience shared with Prabhas. Read full story here

Rana Daggubati sent his wishes to Prabhas and wished him luck. He wrote, " Rewrite history like you always have darling!! All the best to Prabhas team UV, @poojahegde and @Radhekrishna for the realise tomorrow!

However, Radhe Shyam’s collection might not be impressive in the Hindi belt, as according to film producer and trade analyst Girish Johar, the promotions have been rather subdued in the region. He said, “There is no doubt that the film will be great in the southern states. But in the Hindi belt, I peg the film to open at around Rs 3.5-4 crore. It may grow further based on word of mouth.”

As cinegoers are returning to theatres, Radhe Shyam might face competition from Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi and Amitabh Bachchan's Jhund. However, Taran Adarsh believes that Gangubai Kathiawadi will not affect Radhe Shyam so much, as the Alia Bhatt-starrer would be entering the third week of its release.

Radhe Shyam Movie Review: Story Is Set For Either Pooja Hegde Or Prabhas’ Character To Die, But Kills The Audience Instead!

Prabhas' character vikram aditya is a palmist, who is so bad at his job he couldn't even predict the boring fate of his own film.

radheshyam movie review and rating

Star Cast: Prabhas, Pooja Hegde, Bhagyashree, Sathyaraj, Kunaal Roy Kapur

Director: Radha Krishna Kumar

Radhe Shyam Movie Review

What’s Good: This would only strengthen what SS Rajamouli said about how the grand scale should always be backed by soul, this is just like staying at a luxurious villa situated amid a crowded market

What’s Bad: Prabhas’ character Vikram Aditya is a palmist, who is so bad at his job he couldn’t even predict the boring fate of his own film.

Loo Break: If you’re in for picturesque locales, you’d get what you want from start till the end but if you’re looking for a solid story, you’d have 138 opportunities (1 per minute) to take a loo break.

Watch or Not?: Only if you are a Pooja Hegde or Europe fan!

Available On: Theatrical Release.

Runtime: 138 Minutes.

The story starts with world-renowned palmist Vikram Aditya (Prabhas) predicting the emergency of 1975 by reading Indira Gandhi’s (Flora Jacob) palm. He has to leave India after this prediction and he starts to jump from one country to another. What do you mean by why he left the country even in an age when there was no Twitter? Vikram Aditya is pretty sure he will remain single forever because he’s missing a ‘love line’ from his palms, until one day he says Prerna (Pooja Hegde) travelling in a train transported from Wes Anderson’s world.

He falls for her but only wants to keep it till ‘flirtationship’, which is a boomer term for friends with benefits. Prerna somehow falls for him because he travels 300 kilometres on a bike in rain for her, despite being a rich bloke he doesn’t take his car but because he has to impress a girl… vroom vroom. Now, starts the circus of one character could die from either of them because palmistry says so, but you’ll soon realise it’s the audience that wants to get killed by the end.

Radhe Shyam Movie Review

Radhe Shyam Movie Review: Script Analysis

Director/Writer Radha Krishna Kumar falls in the infamous trending trap of ‘style over substance’ focusing majorly on how it looks rather than how it actually feels. The stunning yet forced grandeur doesn’t help in holding the intrigue, because the story just starts demolishing the narrative scene after scene in the second half. RKK makes Prabhas jump out of his comfort zone to play a romantic hero and kudos to him, but his writing often crosses the ‘mystical’ line to jump into the lame zone.

At times, you can’t even notice the eye-pleasing sets just because nothing interesting is happening in the story to grab your attention. The majority portions of the film look like they’re straight out of a SoBo couple’s pre-wedding photoshoot, in which the guy is probably an engineer. Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, production designer Raveender Reddy & costume designers Thota Vijayabhaskar, Eka Lakhani leave no stone unturned to make this look like an epic, even though it’s just unorganised chaos.

Radhe Shyam Movie Review: Star Performance

Prabhas said Baahubali has been chasing him eventually setting similar monumental expectations from all of his films, but he has done 2 films post-Baahubali and they’re Saaho, Radhe Shyam. Both of these films were sold as ‘grand scale epics’, so if you’re injecting the hype based on how stunning your film is why won’t the audience hope for another epic saga backed with a proper story? Also, why even after Sharad Kelkar (Baahubali), Shreyas Talpade (Pushpa) set a standard for Hindi dubbing, Prabhas has yet again taken the “I’ll dub in the languages I’m not comfortable with” route? It does nothing but takes away from the ample charm of his personality he otherwise has.

Pooja Hegde compliments the beautiful sets & aura of the film with her alluring presence. Thankfully, it’s not just her looks that are prioritised but she leaves a mark with her performance even with a very shabby script. Bhagyashree’s character adds nothing substantial to anyone’s life in the film , hence she gets an extremely restricted performance. Sathyaraj as Guruji follows a very formulaic approach in portraying an extremely peculiar godman. Kunaal Roy Kapur’s character is nothing but clutter to Vikram Aditya’s track as despite being a close friend to him, he just appears to disappear without adding or subtracting anything.

Radhe Shyam Movie Review

Radhe Shyam Movie Review: Direction, Music

Radha Krishna Kumar’s vision acts both as a boon and bane for the final product. It’s only because of his vision, the look and feel remain top-notch (barring some jarring CGI during chase sequences), and the similar vision makes him think it’s already too exaggerated the story as well. I notice a couple of Hollywood references from Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind to even a little bit La La Land like vibes, you guys tell me if you spot the same. Also another request, there’s a scene (NOT A SPOILER) in which Prerna schools Vikram Aditya about the importance of life in her hospital, just keep a count on how many times maut/marna is said (in Hindi version) and please let me know the number.

I, unfortunately, watched the Hindi version of the film so songs by Mithoon, Amaal Mallik & Manan Bhardwaj, though would give you a feeling that they’re better than usual literal translated songs from its Telugu version, but comes with a similar outcome of many such songs from the past which has failed to stay alive in the fans’ playlist for a long time. Sanchit Balhara & Ankit Balhara’s flawless background score maintains the film’s overall grandeur without going overboard even once.

Radhe Shyam Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, this film’s vibe could be measured by a single scene (NOT A SPOILER) which is an action sequence shot at night showing Prabhas escaping a ship stuck in Tsunami. The details in that will blow your mind but it’s stretched so much, you’ll eventually lose interest & that’s Radhe Shyam for you.

Sharks, while undeniably lethal, are also, studies have shown, kind of dumb. And “The Last Breath” is a cheesy new thriller that is even dumber than a real shark. Not that it features any real sharks — the predatory creatures here are CGI, and hilariously enough, they move through the water faster than the “rage virus” zombies of “ 28 Days Later ” roam over land.

They don’t show up until about halfway through the Joachim Heder-directed movie, which begins during World War II, and the shelling of a ship that results in a wreck that’s apparently legendary in the present day. That’s according to old salt Levi ( Julian Sands ) whose rickety boat is playing host to a group of self-proclaimed “certified divers” who are also kind of pushy, to say the least. At least the males in the group are. There’s peroxided wannabe Alpha Brett ( Alexander Arnold ) and entitled stoner Logan ( Arlo Carter ), who wonders aloud at the dock whether a local ten-year-old would sell him weed. Rarely have two characters been presented so immediately as those whose deaths you will actively root for. But I’ll refrain from spoilers.

The good, or not as bad, zoomers on the boat trip include Noah ( Jack Parr ), grizzled Levi’s younger mate and also the ex of good doctor Sam (as in Samantha, and played by Kim Spearman ), who’s stuck in the lout party taking the boat out. Is a rapprochement in store? Again, no spoilers. While Levi, having discovered the aforementioned shipwreck, has resolved to report it to the authorities despite it having been his personal passion — “forty years I’ve been looking for her” — finance bro Brett has other ideas, and his money does some persuasive talking. So off Levis and company go to drop the wannabe adventurers in the drink. Where they find skeletons, claustrophobic settings, and eventually a snapped guideline. Did a barracuda do that? No, of course, a barracuda didn’t do it.

The arrival of multiple huge speed-of-light sharks coincides with everyone’s oxygen tanks getting dangerously low. While Levi mostly stays on deck knitting — a “dexterity exercise” to soothe his dive-damaged nerve — his reference early on to his old red scuba suit and the nickname it bestowed on him back in the day stands out like Chekhov’s proverbial first-act gun.

His work as Levi represents the final film appearance of Julian Sands, who died in 2023 while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains of California, and he’s reliably wry as he first resists heroics and then goes for broke.

The movie’s lifts from “ Jaws ” are so blatant that they might as well be read as affectionate, aspirational homages. As goofy and unconvincing as it often is, “The Last Breath” is difficult to get exasperated over. It may go down easier still if you opt to see it in a very well-air-conditioned setting.

‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ Review: He’s a Big Kid Now

Harold is an adult on a quest in this tale based on the beloved children’s book by Crockett Johnson.

  • Share full article

Three people, one in back and two in front, in a cockpit in a scene from “Harold and the Purple Crayon.”

By Glenn Kenny

People have been threatening to make a movie out of the beloved children’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon” for decades. When a visionary director like Spike Jonze was attached to a live-action screen adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s volume, the movie did sound more promising than threatening. (Jonze later left the project.)

In any event, they’ve done it, and now “they” — the writers David Guion and Michael Handelman, and the director Carlos Saldanha — have gone and changed Harold from a cute baby into a cutesy adult. Or rather a child in adult form, played by Zachary Levi, whose Harold has two notes: a plucky grin and a furrowed brow.

First, a narrated and animated prologue walks us through how the movie will shrug off the book. Then, the movie plods around awkwardly, trying to leech whatever charm it can from the remaining elements of the original (like that crayon): In Harold’s real-world quest for his “old man” — whose narration is cut off abruptly in the prologue — the old man does, indeed, turn out to be Johnson. (Johnson died in 1975 and his estate presumably and implausibly cooperated with this venture.) Along the way, Harold meets a family in need. There’s a standard-issue single mom (Zooey Deschanel, whose visible exhaustion here is actually a little too credible) and her boy, Mel (Benjamin Bottani), whose life is in need of wonder.

This wonder will arrive through a tool of “pure imagination” (they really say that!). That is, Harold’s purple crayon, whose concoctions add some not-insubstantial visual interest to the proceedings. One scene in a department store, in which an actual puma and a too-functional kid’s helicopter ride contribute some anarchic slapstick, is a keeper. But it might have been better still as contrived by Terry Gilliam. Or Edgar Wright. Or Spike Jonze.

Harold and the Purple Crayon Rated PG for mild action and thematic elements. Running time: 1 hour 32 minutes. In theaters.

Movie Review: In ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ the superhero movie finally accepts itself for what it is

If one thing is certain about “Deadpool,” it’s that its titular hero, for reasons never explained, understands his place in the world — well, in our world.

Indeed, the irreverent and raunchy mutant is sure to belabor his awareness of the context in which he lives — namely an over-saturated, increasingly labyrinthine multibillion-dollar Marvel multiverse which spans decades, studios and too many films for most viewers to count.

From its inception, the “Deadpool” franchise has prided itself a subversive, self-aware anti-superhero superhero movie, making fun of everything from comic books to Hollywood to its biggest champion, co-writer and star, Ryan Reynolds.

Image

(20th Century Studios/Marvel Studios via AP)

It’s no surprise then, as fans have come to expect, that the long-anticipated “Deadpool & Wolverine” further embraces its fourth wall-breaking self-awareness — even as it looks increasingly and more earnestly like the superhero movie blueprint it loves to exploit. That tension — the fact that “Deadpool” has called out comic book movie tropes despite being, in fact, a comic book movie — is somehow remedied in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which leans into its genre more than the franchise’s first two movies.

Perhaps this gives viewers more clarity on its intended audience. After all, someone who hates superhero films — I’m looking at you, Scorsese — isn’t going to be won over because of a few self-deprecating jokes about lazy writing, budgets for A-list cameos and the overused “superhero landing” Reynolds’ Deadpool regularly refers to.

Image

But this time around, director Shawn Levy — his first Marvel movie — seems to have found a sweet spot. Levy is surely helped by the fact that the third film in the franchise has a bigger budget, more hype and, of course, a brooding, eventually shirtless, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine — who has long been teased as someone Deadpool has, er, complicated feelings toward.

That anticipation makes their relationship, packed with hatred, fandom and homoeroticism, all the more enticing. Their fight scenes against each other are just as compelling as their moments of self-sacrificial partnership in the spirit of, you guessed it, saving the world(s).

Speaking of worlds, there is one important development in our own to be aware of ahead of time. The first two “Deadpool” films were distributed by 20th Century Fox, whose $71.3 billion acquisition by the Walt Disney Co. in 2019 opened the door for the franchise to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, “Deadpool & Wolverine” takes full advantage of that vast playground, which began in 2008 with Robert Downey Jr.’s “Iron Man” and now includes more than 30 films and a host of television shows. The acquisition is also a recurring target of Deadpool’s sarcasm throughout the movie.

Image

Although steeped in references and cameos that can feel a bit like inside baseball for the less devoted, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is easy enough to follow for the casual Marvel viewer, though it wouldn’t hurt to have seen the first “Deadpool” and Jackman’s 2017 “Logan,” a harbinger of the increasing appetite for R-rated superhero violence. The Disney+ series “Loki” also gives helpful context, though is by no means a must watch, on the Time Variance Authority, which polices multiverse timelines to avoid “incursions,” or the catastrophic colliding of universes.

A defining feature of “Deadpool” has been its R rating and hyper violent action scenes. Whether thanks to more money, Levy’s direction or some combination of the two, these scenes are much more visually appealing.

But “Deadpool & Wolverine” does succumb to some of the deus ex machina writing that so often plagues superhero movies. Wade Wilson’s (the real identity of Deadpool) relationship with his ex (?) Vanessa is particularly underdeveloped — though it’s possible that ambiguity is a metaphor for Deadpool’s future within the MCU.

Image

The plot feels aimless at points toward the end. One cameo-saturated battle scene in particular is resolved in a way that leaves its audience wanting after spending quite a bit of time building tension around it. While there are a few impressive stars who make an appearance, audiences may be disappointed by the amount of MCU characters referenced who don’t make it in.

The bloody but comedic final fight scene, however, is enough to perk viewers back up for the last act, solidifying the film’s identity as a fun, generally well-made summer movie.

The sole MCU release of 2024, “Deadpool & Wolverine” proves it’s not necessarily the source material that’s causing so-called superhero fatigue. It also suggests, in light of Marvel’s move to scale back production following a pandemic and historic Hollywood strikes, that increased attention given to making a movie will ultimately help the final product.

“Deadpool & Wolverine,” a Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references. Running time: 127 minutes. Two and a half out of four stars.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool/Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine/Logan in Shawn Levy's 'Deadpool & Wolverine.'

Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26, but the review embargo for the film broke on Tuesday, and the early reaction from critics has been largely positive.

The third Deadpool movie, and first to be included in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular characters and is directed by Shawn Levy. The cast also includes The Crown ‘s Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova and Succession ‘s Matthew Macfadyen as TVA (Time Variance Authority) agent Mr. Paradox.

Box office: 'deadpool & wolverine' reaps record $38.5m in previews, best ever for an r-rated film, and more, 'deadpool & wolverine' review: ryan reynolds and hugh jackman rely on smirks and sentiment in overstuffed team-up.

Below are key excerpts from some of the most prominent early reviews.

In a m i x e d review for The Hollywood Reporter , David Rooney writes that dedicated Deadpool fans will love the in-jokes, which are cranked up for the third installment. “As bountiful as the action scenes are here, the jokes are the sturdiest part of Deadpool & Wolverine ,” Rooney writes, adding, “That’s because the plot is a lumpy stew of familiar elements, given minimal narrative clarity despite the reams of expository technobabble spouted by Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Paradox.”

“This is not an unmotivated crossover event,” writes Alissa Wilkinson, in her largely positive review for The New York Times. Wilkinson feels the endless jokes and goofiness works as Deadpool 3 is “self-reflective” of the corporate nature of comic book movies nowadays, but that approach has limits. “Now that this is an M.C.U. film, there are mandates. The stakes have to be absurdly high, having to do with the destruction or salvation of whole universes. More important, there must be corporate synergy,” Wilkinson writes.

Vulture critic Bilge Ebiri confesses he laughed during Deadpool 3 , if somewhat begrudgingly. “ Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t a particularly good movie — I’m not even sure it is a movie — but it’s so determined to beat you down with its incessant irreverence that you might find yourself submitting to it,” writes a seemingly exhausted Ebiri.

In a middling review, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian felt Deadpool 3 delivered everything a fan of the franchise would want, and the film makes it clear that it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. “This is a movie which more or less orders the audience to stop taking any of the proceedings seriously, shattering the fourth wall into a million pieces with material about nerds saving their ‘special sock’ for particular fight scenes,” writes Bradshaw. “It’s amusing and exhausting.”

Vanity Fair ‘s Richard Lawson felt Deadpool 3 stuck the landing, despite being “a movie about acquisition and IP, housed in a mostly nonsensical dimension-skipping tale of regret and legacy (but in a funny way). … The film’s gaze is narrow and insider-y, but it somehow kind of works,” writes Lawson, adding, “ Deadpool & Wolverine is an amusing reflection on the recent cultural past, and a half-cynical, half-hopeful musing on what its future might be.”

In a rave, The Daily Beast ‘s Nick Schager felt Deadpool 3 “does give the MCU the shot in the arm — and kick to the nuts — that’s urgently needed.” Schager writes that the film “is more amusing and electric — more alive — than any MCU installment in years, and it impressively integrates Deadpool’s distinctive R-rated personality into the decidedly PG-13 franchise.”
