When it comes to team building, though, one of the primary variables that are believed to be critical to success is the perception of the team's overall cohesiveness. 

In recent years various studies have examined team building and team-building exercises – specifically whether or not they play a critical role in success. Many studies have highlighted athlete perception and other factors, including adherence, satisfaction, and team success, playing critical roles in boosting team morale and building teamwork and cooperation. 

While identifying these components is important, two critical questions first need to be answered:

  • Can the behavior of individual athletes be changed? 
  • If so, how can it be changed?

Team building is one of the most well-known and commonly practiced interventions popular amongst many sports organizations. Team building can mean different things to different people, and even studies vary significantly in how they define team building. Generally, however, team building refers to utilizing exercises that improve team dynamics and ultimately aim to allow the team to function better or more effectively.

For years now, sports organizations have been using team building to target various key performance factors that help improve the team's success. For many, the process of building a cohesive team operates in order like this:

  • Focus on team building
  • A boost in the team's cohesiveness and finally 
  • An overall improvement in team functionality and effectiveness

Researchers, however, tend to focus their questions on keeping athletes on the "straight and narrow" when it comes to sticking to their processes and tasks. In this instance, the flow looks something like this:

  • Boost in cohesiveness
  • Maintenance of the team as a whole and then
  • Individual athletes

What is clear is the stereotypical image of team building, like going to the movies or having a BBQ, has changed dramatically. Although still meaningful, team-building now goes far beyond these rather rudimentary activities. 

The Role Of Team Building in Sports

In this section, let’s take a look at some research on team building that resulted in four distinct types of team building methodologies:

  • Interpersonal relationships amongst team members
  • The importance of setting goals
  • Adventure and 

Interpersonal Relationships

Interpersonal relationships concentrate solely on developing and strengthening the relationships within the team with the hope that it leads to a group that is not only cohesive but functions more effectively. This is one of the best strategies to help teams with low morale and/or poor personal relationships amongst team members. 

Goal Setting

Goal setting is the second most practiced team-building framework that sporting organizations often utilize. The objective is actually quite simple; one, to devise goals for the team and individuals, and two, to identify the actions needed to achieve those goals. Many organizations need guidance in setting goals partly because they have not been specified but also because players and staff may disagree with the goals themselves. 

Adventure 

The adventure framework is a favorite way to help teams build stronger relationships because it involves fun outdoor activities such as rope courses and cross-training. The goal is similar to that of the interpersonal framework in that it hopes to improve team cohesiveness and boosts morale. 

Generally, the activities revolve around players having to work together to solve certain problems. Adventure activities can be performed over a day or even an extended stay-away.

Lastly, the least used of the four team-building methods is the "omnibus-framework." Here the goal is to improve team morale and cohesiveness by creating strategies and team-building protocols like pinpointing the individuality of team dynamics. This might include emphasizing the sacrifices that athletes and coaches make or celebrating the uniqueness of each individual within the team.

Delivering Team Building Programs

When you take an in-depth look at team-building activities and protocols, it's clear that they can be delivered to teams or sports organizations as a whole, both directly and indirectly. 

In-direct Approach to Team Building 

The indirect approach is used in sports to develop team-building via an athletic leader such as a coach or a team captain. Generally speaking, sports organizations hire team-building specialists to help implement and deliver the programs and activities to the team's leader. 

While the indirect style of team building is popular amongst sports teams more often than not, the "direct" approach is preferred. The direct method provides much more clarity and learning because it is directly presented to the players.

Direct Approach to Team Building

As the name suggests, the direct approach to team building means that the expert team-builder works directly with each and every member of the team. The direct method is favored because it provides the athletes and coaches with a greater understanding of the principles behind successful team building, 

The direct technique is thought to boost the intrinsic motivation of athletes and players by increasing their confidence in their ability to stick with things through times of adversity. Whether you choose the "indirect" or "direct" method, team building should be the main focus of any organization looking to reach peak performance.

The Harmful Practice of Hazing

Although hazing has been seen as "fun" or "harmless," it can have devastating effects on the person targeted. Simply put, hazing is a form of harassment and in some cases, abuse which is designed to do nothing more than embarrass or humiliate a player. 

Old-school coaches may argue tell that hazing builds character in players and strengthens their resolve, but not only is there no evidence to support this, but most view it as false. 

In fact, those teams that continue to use hazing have reported less cohesiveness, poor teamwork, and lower performance levels, overall.  

The Benefits Of Team Building in Sports

Head coaches and sports organizations should encourage and provide the opportunity for their athletes and coaching staff to participate in team-building activities. Team building significantly enhances the cohesiveness of the team and, for many staff members and players, can be an incredibly empowering experience.

However, some players and staff can react negatively when faced with team-building activities partly due to their personality markers and if team dynamics are out of whack. Seeking the services and guidance of a team-building specialist can help organizations side-step the pitfalls generated by poorly delivered programs. 

At the end of the day, though, team-building activities can aid in improving communication and teamwork, boost motivation and provide players and staff with the feeling they're part of something bigger and much more meaningful.

Boost Effective Team Communication

It goes without saying that one of the most important aspects in the pursuit of peak sports performance is the ability of team members to communicate effectively. As a Head Coach, you are responsible for promoting and encouraging team-building activities to not only help set practical expectations but also nurture positive behaviors and habits.

It's no secret that when team members can talk and communicate freely and without fear of judgment, the clubhouse is generally a much happier and more positive place to be around. Providing an environment with open lines of communication gives your players peace of mind knowing that they can come to you with problems they may be facing on or off the field.

Players thrive knowing they're not being judged and always have someone they can rely on. 

Simply put, if you want to improve teamwork and cohesiveness, then start with team-building exercises today.

Boost Team and Individual Motivation

Motivation can come from many different origins, both internally and extrinsically. In my experience, one of the most common sources of motivation is provided by supportive teammates and staff who rally around teammates struggling with poor in-game performances or slumps.

Team-building activities are a terrific way to help players and coaching staff redirect their attention to what's truly important.

Athletes that are task-focused tend to be internally motivated and are much more likely to stick to the task, especially during times of adversity. Extrinsically-motivated athletes need the support of their coaches and teammates to help them reach their full potential. Team building goes a long way to helping extrinsically motivated athletes understand their teammates' importance in keeping them motivated and performing at their peak levels. 

Boost Team Productivity and Cohesiveness

Team-building exercises offer an excellent way to develop cohesiveness and create a positive environment that helps athletes, teams, coaches, and organizations reach their peak performance. Teams with a poor cohesive unit generally have a low player and coach retention rate along with less than desirable performance and results.

Team building activities help boost productivity and celebrate and recognize the unique contribution that each athlete and team member brings to the table. Teams with high levels of cohesiveness also tend to display an enthusiastic commitment to a unified goal and are much more optimistic on and off the field.

Teams that are less talented but are as "happy as Larry" are generally much more successful than those teams who are "jam-packed" with talent but display poor teamwork, feel the pressure and subsequently experience low morale. 

Team-Building Activities For Teams

Whether you're at an amateur level or competing at the highest levels of professional sports, the one factor that contributes to your overall success is ensuring the entire organization is working towards the same goal. Teamwork, cohesiveness, enthusiasm, and supreme confidence are also critical links in the chain of success.

Building Stronger Relationships

One of the best ways to promote teamwork and cohesion is to organize social get-togethers and events such as barbeques, dinners, and casual meetings. Simple yet effective social meetings can enhance the morale of the team and even give a chance to players who may have disagreements to come together. 

The timing of these gatherings can also positively affect the team and should be scheduled and planned to coincide with a significant game or tournament.

Organizing Charitable Events

Organizing charity events and fund-raising drives are also a fantastic way to boost teamwork and morale within the team. These types of events not only bring the team together but also help the broader community.

For example, the MLB Players Association regularly hosts baseball clinics to provide juniors with increased opportunities and to teach children critical life skills like honesty, responsibility, and dedication that come with playing sport. 

Physical Activities Outside Of Your Sport

An excellent way to build team morale is by organizing activities that fall outside of regular training hours. These activities may include a rope course, paintball, or an obstacle course. Activities like these can improve teamwork, communication, and cohesiveness and improve physical skills like coordination, strength, agility, and speed. 

Sharing Personal Experiences

Last but not least, sharing is a key component of team building. Yes, you read this correctly. When players have more opportunities to talk about their personal challenges, their relationships are greatly enhanced. 

While this practice can feel awkward and uncomfortable for some, others have found it to be one of the best ways to make fundamental changes to how they understand each other.  Talking about personal challenges helps players and coaching staff connect on a much deeper level which generally transfers over to improved on-field performance.

At the same time, the ultimate strength of individual members is the team itself. This is true for any sports team. While it is very important to have a good group of very talented athletes, it is also very important to foster teamwork in order to achieve success as a team.

What Teamwork Involves

Each individual in a team should exhibit Trust, Enthusiasm, Ambition, as well as Motivation. The first one, trust, enables each team member to heavily depend on one another, as well as good teamwork that depends on trust. In any sports team, all of the players need to be trusting with each other. When there is no trust and the members play solely, the whole team is weakened.

Enthusiasm also serves as a seal that bridges the entire team together. Many people engage in sport for enjoyment and fun of the game. If there is fun, the members will become enthusiastic. Therefore, the whole team should share enthusiasm that stems from the desire to win as a team.

Each team member should also be pushed by ambitions. This creates the commitment of being able to achieve these goals. Individuals, no doubt, need ambition in order to be consistent in attending rigorous training sessions, as well as in focusing on the improvement of skills for the benefit of both the individuals, and the team.

Motivation and the Team

Motivation is a silent feeling that drives a team to ultimately achieve their goal of winning. An individual player that has good motivation will make a team do things that are quite impossible. Teams feel challenge when they know that they are able to win their match. It is just like when you play bingo everywhere you go with mobile devices, it is challenging, knowing that there is a chance to win. That motivation will allow you to be confident and play the game calmly, and with the faith that it will turn out well.

A team without teamwork will never be successful in the end. This is why most team coaches spend a good amount of time in order to foster teamwork within their team. Without teamwork, nothing can be achieved as a group.

The Social and Academic Benefits of Team Sports

Team sports are about so much more than their physical benefits. This is especially so when group sports activities are incorporated into a young person ’s life. Studies have shown a direct correlation between physical activity and academic p erformance. A University of Kansas study looking at the performance of students in grades 9 to 12 showed that more than 97% of student athletes graduated high school, 10% higher than those students who had never participated in sports. Athletes were also shown to have better G.P.A. outcomes than non-athletes.

This might have to do with the increased cognitive ability that comes from playing sports. Physical activity naturally increases blood flow to the brain and activates endorphins, chemicals that are released when you exercise. Endorphins can impact your mood and work performance, meaning athletes may be more willing and capable of tackling that next big problem.

Team sports can also help with emotional development. Research published by the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute states that exercise can lead to a unique state of short-term relaxation. That relaxation can promote increased concentration, better memory, enhanced creativity, more effective problem solving, and an improved mood — all benefits that will extend into the classroom.

Team athletes are constantly working with a slate of other people, many of whom can become positive role models along the way. Team sports foster mentorship between older players and younger players, coaches and athletes, and more. Coaches in particular can play an important role in a young athlete ’s life. Players who have positive sports mentors when they’re young are also more likely to seek effective role models throughout their life.

Soft skills are personal attributes that allow people to build positive social relationships. Team sports are an excellent source of soft skills development, as they allow athletes to grow within a supportive environment. Here are just a few of the soft skills fostered through team sports:

Communication Skills

While it might not be as obvious as sitting down and discussing a group project, team sports take a lot of communication — both spoken and unspoken. Communication skills are key in maintaining a functioning sports team, whether it’s listening to locker room pep talk, picking up on nonverbal cues given by other players, or expressing a thought during a post-game debrief.

As Jill Prudden said in her book "Coaching Girl’s Basketball Successfully ,” players are expected to express their concerns, hopes, and disappointments to their coaches and their teammates. She also encourages her players to seek feedback from coaches as well as their classroom teachers, as a result fostering communications skills that will help them succeed in their academic endeavors.

Decisive Action

Sports plays happen fast, and athletes develop the skills needed to make effective snap decisions. Whether it ’s a basketball player deciding to shoot or a soccer player realizing his best move is to pass to a teammate for the assist, athletes learn critical decision-making skills that will benefit them both during and after game time.

Any athlete who has played in a championship game knows the meaning of pressure. Sports create an environment where athletes learn to conquer their natural “fight or flight” instinct to make consistent and difficult decisions under high pressure situations. This ability to function under pressure translates to person who is better at making deadlines and working in stressful situations in the future.

This is an obvious one. Teamwork is all about collaborating with others to reach a common goal. The diverse pairing of personalities and scenarios will help your athlete become adaptable, persistent, and patient. Team sports also teach a sense of group and individual responsibility.

Being on a team with a dozen or more of your peers is an excellent way to recognize the individual talents each person brings to the table. As the Janssen Sports Leadership Center says, working with teammates teaches athletes important life skills such as to respect one another, act in unselfish ways, make good decisions on behalf of the team, and not cut corners.

Time Management

The time commitment required by athletes can be comparable to that of a full-time job. Think of all the different commitments an athlete needs to juggle: competitions, strength and conditioning, team meetings, sports physiotherapy — and these are just the sports-related obligations!

Necessity demands that athletes learn valuable time management skills, otherwise they would never be able to keep up with academics and sport. Effective time management planning is part of why a recent article published by Fast Company argues employers should consider hiring a former student athlete.

Team athletes know that every second counts, and this value of time will translate to their everyday life. As Shannon Miller, a member of the 1992 and 1996 United States Olympic women ’s gymnastics team told Forbes , she kept a schedule that was almost minute by minute when she was an athlete. This careful planning and precision helps athletes focus on reaching their goals sooner than non-athletes.

Build Self-Esteem and a Sense of Community

Team sports are said to bolster the five C’s: competence, confidence, connections, character, and caring. At the heart of this is self-esteem – an increased sense of self as a result of better social interactions, stronger relationships, and higher academic performance.

Team sports provide athletes with a natural community. A report from True Sport says that youth who play sports have higher levels of social support, and that the sense of community created with teammates, coaches, and family members incubates the perfect setting for critical self-esteem development.

In the end, the opportunity to participate in team sports provides athletes with valuable skills that will take them beyond the field, pitch, and court.

Teams are groups of people who work together to achieve a common goal. Maybe you play on a sports team, perform in school plays, or work on a group project for a class. These are all examples of teams. You may have heard your coach or teacher talk about the importance of teamwork and being a good teammate. Teamwork is what teams do to maximize their chances of achieving their goals, like winning a basketball game, putting on a stellar school play, or obtaining a high mark on a group assignment. Sometimes it can be difficult for people to come together and work effectively as a team. In this article, we talk about what teamwork is and how teams can improve the way they work together before, during, and after games. We also explain how teammates can support one another when faced with obstacles and conflict.

At some point in our lives, most of us will be a part of a team. Maybe we will join a sports team, be cast in a school play, or be assigned a group project to complete. You may have heard your teachers, parents, and coaches talk about the importance of teamwork and how working together as a group can help teams achieve their goals [ 1 ]. But what exactly is teamwork? Teamwork behaviors are the things that team members do as a group to meet team goals, like winning a basketball game or completing a group assignment [ 2 ]. In this article, we will describe how the members of a basketball team can use teamwork before they play a game, while they are playing, and even after a match, to improve the way they play as a group ( Figure 1 ). While we will be using a basketball team as the main example throughout this article, everything we discuss can apply to any type of team, in any sport or other activity.

How Can Teams Work Together Before Competition?

The first part of teamwork that we must consider is preparation . This is when team members figure out what they want to achieve during the season or even in the next game. It can be very helpful for teams to take some time to plan how they want to play as a team [ 2 , 3 ]. A basketball team might decide to set some team goals before a game. One goal might be to improve their skills, such as passing, shooting, or rebounding. The team might also set the goal of being supportive toward teammates during the game. To meet these goals, it is important that the team talks about how they plan to achieve each goal [ 2 , 3 ]. For example, if the goal is to improve skills like dribbling or shooting, the team may decide to set aside time during each practice to work on those specific skills. If the team’s goal is to be supportive to teammates, the team may choose to talk about how a supportive teammate acts, both on and off the court. The team may make it their goal to cheer on their teammates, to give each teammate a high five, or to provide some encouragement to a teammate who may be struggling with a skill. Similarly, we might use preparation with our families when we are planning a trip or a hosting a party. It might be helpful for all family members to discuss what they will do to help prepare for an event, like packing the suitcases before a trip or preparing the food for the party guests. If everyone identifies a way that they can help, then things will likely go more smoothly.

Game Day: Teamwork During Competition

The second part of teamwork is focused on what happens during a game. For the basketball team to play at their best, they must consider the 3 Cs: coordination, cooperation, and communication [ 2 , 3 ]. Coordination allows each team member to know what his or her role is on the court. For example, when the team is trying to score a basket, each team member needs to be in the right spot at the right time, so that everyone’s movements are timed properly [ 2 ]. Next, it is important for a team practice cooperation , by having all members perform their individual roles to their full potential, while also keeping an eye out for teammates [ 2 , 3 ]. When a basketball team is on defense, the players on the court not only need to focus on who they are guarding, but they also need to be ready to help a teammate who needs back up. The last of the 3 Cs is communication , which means what we say to our teammates during play. Talking with teammates is important because it helps everyone stay on the same page—particularly since things can change so quickly during a game. Communication helps teams adjust or change things up on the fly [ 2 , 3 ]. Outside of sport, we can use communication to talk to our families, friends, and loved ones about how we are feeling or how our day went. Communication allows our teammates and loved ones to stay up-to-date on our lives as well as to understand when we might be feeling down and in need of cheering up.

Think for yourself: How could you use communication, coordination, or cooperation with your friends, family, classmates, or teammates, to improve teamwork?

Improving Teamwork Post-Game

The final phase of teamwork focuses on how we can improve teamwork after the game is over. During a game, things happen quickly and sometimes we do not have time to make big changes or discuss how we performed as a team until after the game. A team can do two things to improve their teamwork after the game is over: evaluate or discuss as a group what the team did well and what needs to be improved, and decide how the team will make any adjustments or changes to the way they play [ 2 , 3 ].

It is not only important to identify your team’s strengths and weaknesses but also to discuss how your team can maintain their strengths while also improving their weaker aspects. Perhaps your basketball team did an excellent job defending your opponent during the game, but only made half of their free throws. With this information in mind, it is key to make the necessary adjustments as a group. To help the team score a higher percentage of free-throw shots during a game, maybe the team needs to spend more time in practice, breaking down free-throw shooting technique; or perhaps the team can create drills to help players make their free-throw shots under pressure.

Think for yourself: Think back to a game or situation in which your team did not perform at their best. Name one thing your team could improve on and suggest one way that the team could improve that aspect before the next game.

Sticking Together Throughout the Season

Working together as a team is not always easy! Each team member is different and unique. We all have different strengths, weaknesses, personalities, and past experiences. Often, individual team members and the group as a whole encounter obstacles during a season. Therefore, it is important that every team is prepared to respond to obstacles and support its members when problems arise. Even though you or one of your teammates may be dealing with a personal problem that is separate from the team, it could still have an effect on how the team performs [ 4 ]. Supportive teams and teammates always find both big and small ways to help team members who need it. Support might be as simple as offering words of encouragement to a teammate who is struggling or talking to a trusted adult (parent, teacher, or coach) about a problem you or one of your teammates are dealing with.

In any team, it is possible that conflict between teammates will arise. Not only is conflict normal, but it can also be a positive learning opportunity for teams. Teams, families, and friendship groups can prepare for potential conflicts between members by having strategies to help manage those situations. Strategies that help individuals express themselves and communicate their concerns can limit the amount of damage that a disagreement or issue can cause a team, family, or friendship group [ 5 ].

Think for yourself: Imagine one of your teammates or friends is feeling nervous before a big game or other challenge. What could you, as a teammate or friend, do to help that person?

Final Thoughts on Teamwork

We will all find ourselves on a team on the field, court, classroom, or stage at some point in our lives. How we interact with our teammates massively impacts not only the way we perform but also how much fun we have with our teams [ 1 , 2 ]. Boca Raton synchronized diving duo compete at Olympic trials for chance to represent Team USA in Paris

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A synchronized diving team from Palm Beach County is testing their teamwork while trying to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

The first question WPTV reporter Todd Wilson posed to Kaylee Bishop and her coach Michelle Sandelin was, "What does it take to be a good, synchronized diver?"

"A lot of time, patience, flexibility, just being able to work with your partner and have a good relationship with them," Bishop said.

Bishop and Emilie Moore are diving partners with sights set on the highest of heights. While the teen phenoms from Boca Raton thrived individually in the pool for years, it was just last year that their diving partnership began.

SPECIAL COVERAGE: 2024 Paris Olympics        It's a partnership that at times can mean Moore and Bishop are separated by thousands of miles. Moore is a student at Stanford University, and Bishop is here in South Florida preparing for her senior year of high school.

The need to stay in sync has taken on a new dimension.

"Basically, you have to trust in your partner that they're putting in the same amount of work as you, making the same improvements as you," Bishop said. "I count for me and Emilie, so we actually recorded an audio of me counting so she can listen to it."

For those who don't know how a synchronized diving competition works, timing is everything.

Bishop and Moore compete on the 10-meter platform. Just for reference, diving off a 10-meter platform is like jumping off a three-story building. There are two rounds of voluntaries, which are the easier dives followed by three rounds of optimal, which are the harder dives.

At the Olympics, all dives are scored by a panel of judges. The judges rate the execution and synchronization of every dive on a scale of 1-10.

Sandelin prepares the teens for the best of the best.

"They were in the World Series finale in China competing with the top divers in the whole world," Sandelin said. "Olympic gold medalists, Olympic silver medalists, they were all there and they just competed against them a couple of months ago."     Bishop and Moore are now showcasing their skills at the Olympic trials in Tennessee, knowing that a spot in Paris is on the line.

"We're just going to give it our best," Bishop said.    Bishop admits time is on her side. At 17-years-old, once she finishes a private online school, she's committed to Indiana University, one of the best diving programs in the country. So, the way she looks at things we could be hearing their names in the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Saints running back Alvin Kamara rejects the premise that his absence from voluntary practices this offseason indicates a lack of enthusiasm for — or commitment to — learning New Orleans’ new offense.

“I’ve been in this eight years,” said Kamara, who was selected by New Orleans in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft and wound up being the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. “I’m pretty confident in my ability to pick up on information.”

Kamara practiced for the first time this offseason on Tuesday, the first day of mandatory minicamp. As he’s done most of his career, he skipped nine voluntary practices spread over the previous three weeks, opting instead to work out with his personal trainer in Miami.

Kamara speaks fondly of his usual offseason routine, which introduced him to an array of novel drills to work on his balance and agility in addition to strength and conditioning. He credits it for helping him surpass 1,100 yards from scrimmage in each of his seven NFL seasons — and for a slew of highlight-reel scoring runs on which he bounced off, slipped out of or darted around multiple attempted tackles along the way.

Now, however, the Saints have a new offensive coordinator in Klint Kubiak . His scheme represents a departure from the offense that former coach Sean Payton and former coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. — a Payton protege — ran during Kamara’s seven previous NFL seasons.

Saints coach Dennis Allen said it “remains to be seen” if Kamara is a bit behind his teammates in terms of adapting to the new scheme, which emphasizes outside zone runs and an array of play-action passes, with running backs often the intended targets.

“I’m not worried about Alvin really knowing what to do; he’s really smart and he’s a professional,” Allen said. “It’s really more about getting the rhythm and the timing ... and how these particular plays need to be run and what that feels like.”

Kamara says he understands there were several reasons why fans and the Saints alike would have liked to see him participate more in the offseason training opportunities offered at Saints headquarters the past month.

The Saints have missed the playoffs for three straight seasons, and Kamara is coming off his least productive season statistically.

“I understand what kind of the word has been — doing something different and everybody being here,” Kamara said. “I kind of just stuck with what I know, you know? I don’t think any of my teammates took offense to it, really.”

Kamara’s 694 yards rushing last season were a career low, and his 466 yards receiving were his second fewest in a season. He also missed four games — three because of a suspension and one because of an ankle injury.

“Not even looking at numbers, I just didn’t feel like it was one of one of my better years,” Kamara said.

He also was not shy about questioning the effectiveness of the 2023 offense.

“I just felt like we weren’t where we needed to be,” Kamara said. “I don’t think we were doing the best things every week to put ourself in the best position to win.”

Now Kamara says he’s encouraged by the Saints’ efforts to transition toward the type of offensive scheme that has worked well for defending NFC champion San Francisco, where Kubiak was a top assistant under Kyle Shanahan last season.

“A lot of opportunity out there for me to do different things,” Kamara said, expressing admiration for how the Niners deployed similarly versatile running back Christian McCaffrey last season.

“I’m excited for that,” Kamara said. “The most stressful thing for me right now is like, my left rear tire has low pressure. Everything else, I’m good. Like, I feel great, you know? I’m doing what I’ve always done. ... I’m always ready.”

NOTES: Saints top cornerback Marshon Lattimore also practiced for the first time this offseason. Like Kamara, he has typically skipped voluntary offseason practices for much of his career.

BOSTON – Al Horford waited a long time to win an NBA title. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum’s wait seemed like a long time.

For Al Horford, it was 17 seasons. For Brown and Tatum, it was 107 playoff games.

But when it comes to special achievements, the wait is worth it.

The Celtics learned that Monday, defeating Dallas 106-88 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals for the franchise’s first championship since 2008 and 18 th overall , breaking a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for most titles in league history.

“This is going to be a night that I will remember for the rest of my life, from the game, the celebration, these moments,” Tatum said. “Over the last couple years, we had some tough losses at home in the playoffs. We've lost the NBA championship at home in front of our fans. We had a chance to beat Miami in Game 6 a few years ago and lost that one.”

“To have a big win, the biggest win that you could have in front of your home crowd, I felt like that was really important to go out there and do everything in my power to make sure we won this game tonight.”

In the rich, illustrious and magical history of Boston sports – ingrained in New England life, from Providence to Portland, and in the immortal words of James Taylor, from Stockbridge to Boston – the 2023-24 Celtics have found their place alongside the great sports stories in the city’s history.

The Celtics overwhelmed opponents, including the Mavericks, with offensive and defensive talent and versatility . They had multiple scorers and a combination of team and one-on-one defense stressed and broke down opponents. They had answers and responses for almost every scenario.

This Celtics championship was forged in previous playoff losses, the full potential of a Brown-Tatum partnership , Mazzulla’s coaching and his belief in the trusting his players and the 3-point shot and president of basketball operations Brad Stevens’ roster building.

Celtics thrive with 3-point shot

The Celtics shot 46 3-pointers in Game 3 against Dallas. It was the ninth time they attempted at least 40 3s in the playoffs. The 3 is important staple of Boston’s offense. During the regular season, the Celtics attempted a league-high 42.5 3s per game, made a league-best 16.5 3s per game and were second in 3-point shooting field goal percentage (.388).

“You can't have a philosophy or a way of playing if you don't have a group of guys that are willing to buy into it and be disciplined,” Mazzulla said. 

Boston’s eight main rotation players (Tatum, Brown, Horford, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser) made at least 10 3s during the playoffs, five made at least 30 3s and four shot at least 38% from that distance.

The Celtics outscored the Mavericks 210-144 on 3s in the Finals.

“I don't know if it's at cut and dry as we need to shoot a lot of 3s,” Tatum said. “But with the group that we have and playing to our strengths, being able to beat guys off the dribble, and the luxury that we have is with our starting five, whether it's KP or Al, everybody can space the floor and shoot. …

“It's just all about making the right reads. We're never like, we need to shoot 40 threes a night. But if we play to our strength and space how we're supposed to, it just finds the right person, and we don't turn down any great shots.

Brown-Tatum lead the way back to a title

Some teams require losses before winning the biggest prize, and the Celtics had tough playoff defeats – four times in the conference finals and once in the NBA Finals since 2018.

“It took being on the other side of this and losing in the Finals and being at literally the lowest point in a basketball career that you could be, to next year, to the following year, thinking that was going to be the time, and come up short again,” Brown said of the 2022 Finals and 2023 playoffs.

“People have said it before. But coming up short and having failures makes this moment that much better. Because you know what it feels like to lose. You know what it feels like to be on the other side of this and be in the locker room and hearing the other team celebrating, hearing them celebrate on your home floor. That was devastating.”

This title had an old-school feel to it. The Celtics’ title is reminiscent of the 1980s Pistons that lost Boston twice in the playoffs before breaking through but losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1988 Finals, and finally winning the title in 1989.

Said Brown, the Finals MVP : “We learned from all of our mistakes. All of our adversity has made us stronger, made us tougher. All season you could see it. We started from the jump. We made all the sacrifices. We played both ends of the ball at a high level. We didn't skip any steps. And this was the result.

“But all of those experiences led to here. All of moments where we came up short, we felt like we let the city down, let ourselves down, all of that compiled is how we get to this moment.”

The Celtics have a complete understanding of what is required to win a championship. Brown, Tatum, Porzingis, White, Holiday and Horford provided offensive options that resulted in two 20-point-a-game scorers with the possibility of a third and even a fourth getting 20 points in the same game. Boston has unselfish players who passed and provided elite defense.

It was a team effort with Brown, the Finals MVP, and Tatum leading the way. Brown averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.6 steals and shot 44% from the field, and Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists and shot 38.85 from the field.

“We've been through a lot,” Brown said. “We've been playing together for seven years now. We've been through a lot, the losses, the expectations. The media have said all different types of things: We can't play together. We are never going to win. We heard it all. But we just blocked it out, and we just kept going. I trusted him. He trusted me. And we did it together.”

Mazzulla connects with his style, philosophy

Mazzulla has unorthodox methods. In video sessions, he splices footage of MMA fights, soccer and animals to make points about process and response. He seeks out head coaches in other sports, such as Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and New England Patriots’ Jerod Mayo to discuss the job.

Mazzulla arrived at the Celtics’ head coaching job in an unusual circumstance. Boston suspended the-Celtics coach Ime Udoka for the 2022-23 season for violations of team policy and moved Mazzulla into the interim role. At All-Star weekend of that season, Mazzulla had the interim tag removed.

“You need criticism. You need praise. You need expectations,” Mazzulla said. “All those things go into making who you are as a person, making who you are as people, as an organization.”

He has had success based on his process. “It's understanding why,” he explained after winning Game 3. “Why are we down 13? Is it effort? Is it execution? Is it things we can control? And once we answer those questions, we can move on to the next phase of the game.”

Mazzulla is the youngest coach at 35 years to win an NBA title since 1969 when Celtics Hall of Famer Bill Russell, then also 35, did it. Mazzulla is younger than Celtics center Al Horford, a year older than Jrue Holiday and eight and nine years older than Brown and Tatum.

He likes the 3-ball, and if you listen closely, he uncovers his basketball philosophy. “Getting back on defense, playing hard, transition, rebounding, spacing, execution, those things are the most important,” said Mazzulla who is almost always serious during interviews.

He has won over the locker room. “This type of team is Joe Mazzulla ball,” Horford said. “It's defending, being gritty on offense. It's being able to (have) everybody be a threat on the court at the same time.

“And everything that he wanted to do, he was able to accomplish. He always knew when to push the buttons. He's hard. He can be a little whacky sometimes. But that's what we appreciate about him.”

Brad Stevens builds Celtics into champions

Brad Stevens shocked basketball when he left Butler to coach the Celtics, and then he stunned the NBA when he moved from coaching the Celtics to the team’s president of basketball operations. While he didn’t draft Brown and Tatum, he found the right players to put around them, acquiring Kristaps Porzingis, White and Holiday and bringing back Al Horford.

Now, the Celtics are in position to contend for the next several seasons.

Brown is under contract through 2028-29, Holiday signed an extension in April that keeps him a Celtic through at least 2026-27, Porzingis’ contract is up after 2025-26 and Payton Pritchard’s deal is good through 2027-28.

There are contract situations involving Tatum and White that will be addressed but it’s possible and even likely the Celtics reach extensions with both players, including a deal that will make Tatum one of the highest-paid players in the league.

The Celtics already are early favorites to win the title next season.

“We have an opportunity,” Brown said. “We definitely have a window. We take it one day at a time. We definitely have to make sure we stay healthy. But, we'll enjoy the summer, enjoy the moment, and then we get right back to it next year.”
