The “Confidential Assignment” sequel is nearing its premiere!

Directed by Kim Sung Hoon, the 2017 film “Confidential Assignment” was about a North Korean detective named Rim Chul Ryung ( Hyun Bin ) and a South Korean detective named Kang Jin Tae ( Yoo Hae Jin ) teaming up to catch a criminal. Girls’ Generation’s YoonA  also played Park Min Young, the sister-in-law of Kang Jin Tae.

The sequel is titled “Confidential Assignment 2: International” and follows Rim Chul Ryung heading back to South Korea in pursuit of a brutal and secret criminal organization. He teams up again with Kang Jin Tae, who volunteers to work with the North Korean in order to get back on the investigation team after a mistake landed him in the cyber crime department.

The upcoming film also stars  Daniel Henney  and  Jin Sun Kyu . Daniel Henney plays Jack, an FBI detective from the United States who is on the trail of a North Korean criminal organization that has caused havoc all over the world. Jin Sun Kyu plays Jang Myung Joon, the leader of this criminal organization.

With new actors and storylines ready to add fun to the “Confidential Assignment” series, here are three key points to look out for in the sequel film!

The explosive synergy between Hyun Bin, Yoo Hae Jin, YoonA, Daniel Henney, and Jin Sun Kyu

The first key point of “Confidential Assignment 2” is the powerful chemistry between these trustworthy actors. In addition to the tight bromance of Chul Ryung and Jin Tae as they reunite to catch Jang Myung Joon, there is the fearless and action-oriented Min Young who lives in her own made up love triangle, as well as the newly recruited Jack. I think she would be able to show her ability in the third movie since she joined in on the investigation even a little bit in the second film."

When asked about wanting the relationship between Min Young and Cheol Ryeong to become more developed, YoonA explained, " I think it would be good if there is a bit of growth in that aspect too. There were more signs in this second film than the first so I think it would be good if there would be more signals in the third film."  She added, " In the third film, Cheolryeong should express something too at that point." 

Meanwhile, 'Confidential Assignment 2: International' follows an unlikely duo - North Korean detective Rim Cheol Ryeong (played by Hyun Bin) and South Korean detective Kang Jin Tae (Played by Yoo Hae Jin ) - who partner up with a new teammate, Jack (played by Daniel Henney). These three detectives work together to catch an international criminal while bickering and cooperating without a choice.

YoonA Dishes on ‘Confidential Assignment 2,’ Love Triangle with Hyun Bin and Daniel Henney, and More

YoonA is returning to the big screen with the Confidential Assignment sequel tomorrow. Ahead of the release, YoonA sat down for an interview.

“My acting career can be divided into before and after Confidential Assignment ,” she shared, showing great love for the series. “It has a very special meaning to me.”

For the movie, she reunited with Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae Jin . “I worked with them in the prequel, so I felt comfortable even after seeing them for the first time after a long time,” she recalled. “Hyun Bin’s presence just reassures me and Yoo Hae Jin, despite being much older than me, always treats me with a lot of love and respect.” Daniel Henney became a new addition to the cast. She commented, “He’s so gentle, and he speaks perfect Korean. His acting in Korean was flawless and we had zero problems communicating, so I joked with him a lot, and in all, we got along just fine.”

YoonA will be in a love triangle with Hyun Bin and Henney. “I don’t even know if I can call in a romance (laughs),” she shared. “But my working environment was the best. Maybe some of my performances in the movie might not even be acting. I had so much fun filming, and though it was all in my head, I was happy to be in a love triangle with them.”

What did she focus on the most? She replied, “A lot of preparations were made for every scene.” She continued, “What I remember the most is the emotional flow of Min Yeong (YoonA). She can’t look like she’s given her heart to Jack ( Daniel Henney ), and she can’t look like she’s let go of Chul Ryung (Hyun Bin). I tried not to feel so comfortable and lose the Min Yeong-like actions.”

After the premiere, expectations for the third installment of the series are high. “If Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae Jin take part in Confidential Assignment 3 , then of course I should as well. I haven’t heard about it, but like how Confidential Assignment 2: International was made because the prequel received a lot of love, I’d be thrilled if Confidential Assignment 3 is produced,” she said.

Meanwhile, YoonA has a busy schedule in the coming months. “Some even asked me if I was enlisting soon,” she laughed. “Filming for Big Mouth has ended, and the show is near its end. I’ve filmed the drama for a long time, so I’m just grateful that it’s receiving a lot of love. Confidential Assignment 2 will hit the screen tomorrow, and I can’t wait to hear what the people who loved the prequel will say about it.” She added, “I’ve also finished filming 2 O’Clock Date (literal title). I worked on it, thinking that I’ll get to show a new side of myself. It’s my second movie with the Exit crew, so please look forward to it.”

Hyun Bin is back as he reprises his role as elite North Korean detective Im Chul Ryung, welcoming his reunion with South Korean detective, Kang Jin Tae, played by Yoo Hae.

Interestingly, FBI agent Jack, portrayed by Daniel Henney, will spice up the duo's team-up, raising expectations with their collaboration in "Confidential Assignment 2: International."

Interestingly, CJ ENM , the distributor of the movie, unveils the much-awaited trailer of Hyun Bin's movie comeback.

From heart-stopping car chasing scenes to blazing buildings, the first trailer hints at the thrilling ride for the trio in pursuit of bringing down a large-scale criminal organization.

Besides Hyun Bin, Yoo Hae, and Daniel Henney, fans would get to see Girls' Generation YoonA reprising her role as Park Min Young and Kang Jin Tae's sister-in-law, who shows deep affection towards Im Chul Ryung.

Another familiar face is joining "Confidential Assignment 2: International" with Park Hyung Soo taking the role of National Intelligence Service executive.

Directed by Lee Seok Hoon of "Dancing Queen" and "The Pirates," the much-awaited release date of "Confidential Assignment 2: International" is slated to hit the big screen sometime in September. It is predicted that the sequel will surpass the achievement of "Confidential Assignment" released in 2017.

To recall, the action thriller movie, which premiered ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday garnered 7.81 million viewers.

Daniel Henney Shares Glimpse of 'Confidential Assignment 2: International'

Ahead of the "Confidential Assignment 2: International" trailer release, Daniel Henney teases his followers with a photo of him together with Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae, looking dapper sunglasses as they portray police detectives.

"The boys are back in town... this time with one extra. 'Confidential Assignment 2'... it's coming," he wrote in a now-deleted post, stimulating curiosity in the trio's on-screen chemistry.

Interestingly, the upcoming movie will be his comeback to the silver screen after the 2013 film "The Spy: Undercover Operation" with Moon So Ri and Sol Kyung Gu.

Hyun Bin Stars in Multiple Projects

The same goes for Hyun Bin, who will have his big screen comeback through "Confidential Assignment 2: International."

In addition, the soon-to-be father is also headlining two other new films. The first is "The Point Men" with Hwang Jung Min and "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" star Kang Ki Young.

In the upcoming drama film, Hyun Bin will take the role of the NIS agent.

Adding to the list of his back-to-back movies is the action historical crime film "Harbin" with Jeon Yeo Been.

Hyun Bin, Daniel Henney join forces again after 17 years for Confidential Assignment 2: International

SEOUL, South Korea - Reunited after 17 years, South Korean actor Hyun Bin and Korean-American star Daniel Henney pit their wits and charms against each other in a new action-comedy.

One being as dashing as the other is brooding, their combined appeal was enough to make their co-star Im Yoon-ah go gaga as a mini love triangle develops on-screen.

"I wanted to maintain the love triangle and not take any sides," a blushing Im, 32, said during a media conference held in Seoul on Tuesday.

"I had a great time filming the movie and it felt even more blissful seeing how they were competing over me. There are many heart- fluttering moments."

In Confidential Assignment 2: International, Hyun Bin reprises his role as an elite North Korean detective. He teams up with a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent (Henney) and a South Korean cop (Yoo Hae-jin) to hunt down the leader (Jin Seon-kyu) of a North Korean crime syndicate, who fled from New York to Seoul. It opens in cinemas in Singapore on Sept 15.

Drama, tension and rivalry ensue when the FBI agent suspects his North Korean partner is hiding the truth from them.

The flick is a sequel to the hugely successful Confidential Assignment (2017). Starring Hyun Bin and Yoo as partners in an inter-Korean crime-busting operation, it sold 7.81 million tickets in South Korea alone.

Im, of K-pop group Girls' Generation fame, makes a return as the Korean cop's gutsy sister-in-law, who falls for Hyun Bin's character but is distracted when Henney shows up.

Noting that there were no romantic scenes in the first instalment of the series, Hyun, 39, said it was interesting to portray the emotions that emerged when a rival in love comes into the picture.

"How could she have a change of heart so quickly?" he added with a laugh, glancing at Im.

Henney, 42, joked that he "felt very bad" for stealing attention from Hyun's character, so much that "it was hard for me to watch". In the film, women fawn over his mixed-race character's good looks wherever he goes, outshining Hyun.

Said Henney, whose father is Caucasian: "Honestly, I didn't have to do much because Yoon-ah's reactions were so wonderful. That's why the scenes worked so well, because she's such an amazing actress."

Though new to the set, Henney got comfortable easily, thanks to his friendship with Hyun. The two hunks met on the set of the 2005 hit drama My Lovely Sam Soon, vying for the affections of another woman.

The show catapulted both to stardom, with Michigan-born Henney going on to make his name in Hollywood. He won key roles in films like X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), and television series Criminal Minds (2015 to 2020) and The Wheel Of Time (2021).

Confidential Assignment 2: International marks his return to Korean cinema after the 2013 action-comedy The Spy: Undercover Operation.

Henney confessed he was nervous in the beginning and bumbled while speaking Korean, but got in form with help from Hyun.

He described his Korean co-star as "an amazing leader" and "we have this energy together, so everything turned out well".

"I was worried about joining this team, but they made it very comfortable and fun for me," he said. "I make a lot of mistakes when I speak Korean, but they would help me all the time, so it was really an amazing experience and I'm very grateful for it."

Helmed by director Lee Suk-hoon (The Pirates, 2014), the sequel is Hyun's first movie outing since the period zombie flick Rampant (2018). He was last seen in the hit TV drama Crash Landing On You (2019), where real-life romance blossomed between him and his on-screen lover Son Ye-jin.

Married since March, the couple are expecting their first child.

Confidential Assignment 2: International opens in cinemas on Sept 15.

Confidential Assignment 2: International

Story: Jang (Jin Sun-kyu) is a drug lord who was actually supposed to produce drugs on behalf of North Korea and sell them abroad in order to supply the country with a steady cash flow. But he defected and now lines his own pockets. North Korea also has a problem with the fact that Jang has a billion dollars that belong to them. They want the money back and so Lim Cheol-ryeong (Hyeon Bin) is sent to America, where the FBI captured Jang. The FBI's lead investigator Jack (Daniel Henney) is not at all happy that he has to give Jang to North Korea. However, when the prisoner is being handed over, there is a big shootout and Jang manages to escape. For reasons unknown to the North, Jang flees to South Korea and goes into hiding, were he also launches a new drug. Lim is sent to South Korea, where he is supposed to collaborate with Detective Kang Jin-tae (Yoo Hae-jin). The two have already solved a case together in the past, but despite their friendship, Kang is aware of the fact that Lim's loyalty lies with his own country. When Jack gets involved in the case too, it seems almost impossible for the parties to cooperate. Still, the three have no other choice but to share their knowledge with each other if they want to put a stop to Jang's activities - as the drug lord has already forged an extremely dangerous plan with which he wants to take revenge for the death of his family.

Review: If you don't have the best memory anyway, it's no surprise you cannot remember "Confidential Assignment" . Luckily, I can use my reviews as a memory aid, and I quickly realized that the first part was simply forgettable. That's why I was all the more surprised to see that there was a second installment in the first place, and even the more astonished that it was basically better in all respects too, so much so that it could actually be called a good movie. This is not only due to the excellent action (which was already pretty decent in the first part), but above all due to the humor, which works on a level that is not embarrassing at all - instead it's really entertaining. Moreover, the flat characters were fleshed out more and - also thanks to a third "buddy" - the direcctor finally managed to get the chemistry between the main characters right, which is something that didn't work in the first flick.

The reason why the movie has the subtitle "International", apart from the fact that the introduction is set in the USA, is the third person in the league. Daniel Henney ( "My Father" ) is the Korean Michael Wong. He almost always speaks English and only sporadically speaks Korean when it suits him. The fact that he always immediately scores points with women, mainly because of his appearance and masculinity, starts a nice competition between his character and that of Hyeon Bin. But that is not the only reason for tension between them, because - needless to say - all three protagonists are loyal to their own country and therefore always have to hide some information from the others. Of course, in a buddy movie like that, there just has to be some betrayal followed by remorse and redemption. Overall, it can be said that adding another character brings more dynamic to the movie and actually increases the level of entertainment.

Towards the end, however, there are still some nice action scenes, and again the level of violence contrasts the family movie atmosphere. A contrast that is actually quite pleasing this time. Action fans will also get their money's worth thanks to some gripping scenes, but it's mainly the humor that works really well in this sequel. The dialogues between the individuals are entertaining and create a pace and dynamics that make the 128 minutes fly by in an instant. Different to what we get to see in so many sequels, there is hardly anything over-the-top here, and thanks to the introduction of a third character into the bromance you can even watch the movie without needing any knowledge of the previous picture. Accordingly, "Confidential Assignment 2: International" has done everything right as a sequel. As a movie on its own, you don't get anything seriously new here, but what you get is some solid entertainment.

Q. The number of viewers of “Confidential Assignment 2: International” is exceeding 6 million and heading toward 7 million viewers. Is there anything you want to say to the audience who loves the movie?

A. Lim Yoon-ah: I love the audience who have come to watch ‘Confidential Assignment 2: International’. Thank you very much. I hope everyone will rewatch the movie N times and spread the news about it so that we can reach 7 million viewers. (laughs)

Q. What’s the scene that you personally like the most?

A. Lim Yoon-ah: I like the scenes where I got to be with my family at home. I think it’s very memorable because we had a fun time filming on the set. I think it was more meaningful and enjoyable because not only actors Hyun Bin, Yoo Hae-jin, and Daniel Henney, but also actors Jang Young-nam and Park Min-ha were together with us. In particular, the scene where they tell the story of a bomb squad joined by Jack (Daniel Henney) and Cheol-ryeong (Hyun Bin) at home with the family. There was a part where everyone exposed their wounds of glory as if they were confronting each other, but I remember laughing a lot because it was so much fun on the set.

Q. If there is to be a “Confidential Assignment 3”, will you participate?

A. Lim Yoon-ah: This team’s member, remember! I think it would be nice if the audience kept giving us love so that we can continue to “cooperate” together for a long time.

Q. What are your plans for your next work?

A. Lim Yoon-ah: I have finished filming the movie ‘2 O’clock Date’ and I’m filming the JTBC drama ‘King the Land’. I think I’ll be able to meet the audience and viewers again next year.

Q. With the pandemic coming to an end, Korean films are reviving. Is there anything you want to say to cheer for Korean movies?

A. Lim Yoon-ah: I think many Korean films are loved all over the world as they are now thanks to the audience who cherish and love them. Please visit the movie theater a lot, and it would be great if you can continue giving generous support to Korean movies as you have done so far.

Confidential Assignment Still 3 - Publicity - H 2017

Revisiting the frequently tense relationship between Seoul and Pyongyang, director Kim Sung-hoon ( My Little Hero ) lightens things up a bit with Confidential Assignment , a comedic thriller featuring mismatched cops working at cross-purposes on a clandestine case. As buddy movies go, it never hits the heights of hilarity displayed by exemplars of the subgenre , but after a solid domestic opening, CJ Entertainment’s U.S. release may still prompt action fans to respond. 

After inept police detective Gang Jin-tae ( Yoo Hai-jin , Tazza : The Hidden Card ) screws up yet another investigation, his boss somehow decides that he’s the best candidate for a high-level assignment with the federal intelligence service shadowing a North Korean operative visiting Seoul with a high-level government delegation. Army captain Lim Cheol-ryeong (Hyun Bin, Late Autumn ) has been assigned to track down rogue officer Cha Gi-seong (Kim Joo-hyuck , Like for Likes ), who has fled to the South with the Pyongyang government’s printing plates for producing superior-quality counterfeit $100 bills. Known as “superdollars” for their ability to avoid detection, the fake currency could destabilize international relations if traced back to the North Korean regime.

Close-mouthed Lim, under strict orders not to divulge his mission to recover the stolen superdollar plates, doesn’t tell Gang that Cha is his former commanding officer or that his superior murdered Lim’s wife during the heist. Since Gang is tasked with discovering the purpose of Lim’s investigation, he’ll somehow have to wheedle the information out of his counterpart before Lim is required to return to the North in just three days’ time. The unexpected interference of a Chinese triad boss attempting to obtain the plates from Cha is sure to complicate their investigation, if only they can catch up with their elusive target first.

Rumors about the origins of the mysterious superdollar abound and although the counterfeit currency hasn’t been definitively linked to North Korea, the premise for this lightweight action movie seems sufficiently plausible if occasional plot holes and lapses in logic can be ignored. Yoon Hyeon-ho’s script proves too repetitive and unfocused to build much tension, however, frequently digressing into the particulars of the leading characters’ personal issues. The attempt at maintaining a comedic subplot between Gang and Lim as the mismatched detectives often feels strained, particularly with the addition of Gang’s bickering family members to the mix.

Hyun plays the stern-faced military straight man to Yoo’s thin-skinned street cop, and although the two have some isolated moments when they’re really clicking, on the whole the performances are more serviceable than remarkable. Kim keeps the action sequences tightly focused, particularly in the tense opening segment, but tends to let dramatic scenes go on for too long after they’ve conveyed their point. Essentially tacking on a drawn-out fourth act after the 90-minute point, the film feels needlessly overblown by the time it hits the two-hour mark.
