How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?

Libraries can add theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to their institutional repository.  ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to the institution's IR.

EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

Bank investment in FinTech firms: strategies and value effects

The rise of FinTech innovations has been significantly reshaping the business model of the financial industry over the recent decade. FinTech firms (FinTechs) provide innovative financial services at a lower cost through their consumer-centric platform. Banks have been investing in promising FinTechs to develop innovative solutions and compete in the new landscape. Nevertheless, a bank’s investment behavior to achieve these goals and the perception of bank shareholders on such cooperation type are less understood. This thesis attempts to investigate the entry and exit strategy of banks for the FinTech industry in terms of FinTech sectors, entry modes, and partnership types and measure the market reactions to provide the value effects over the investment period. Using a novel and hand-collected investment dataset in FinTechs by the top 300 banks worldwide, this study shows that banks diversify their investment across various FinTech sectors primarily via equity financing and partnering with non-bank financial firms as an investment strategy. The most active investors are larger, better capitalized, and operate a more diversified income structure. The thesis also identifies significant complementarities across FinTech sectors, entry modes, and partnership types in the investment choices of banks to reduce investment uncertainty. Despite diversification as a risk-sharing mechanism in the investment approach and the potential competitive gains from innovative technologies, investing in FinTechs is perceived as value-decreasing by bank shareholders. The stock market negatively reacts to FinTech investment announcements, and this decline is mainly driven when banks acquire FinTechs or invest in FinTechs jointly with non-bank financial firms. The long-term value analysis further shows that the decrease in bank shareholder wealth following the FinTech investment persists over the first post-investment year. However, smaller and better-capitalized banks appear to experience the least value-destroying in the long-run horizon. Lastly, the analysis of FinTech exits shows heterogeneous exit probability and time to exit across FinTech sectors and equity stages. Banks experience more frequent exits over a shorter period in the investment in Payment and RegTech sectors and the later stage of equity financing. This finding suggests that each sector has a different speed of developing innovations via banks-FinTechs cooperation, and the staged financing plays an essential role in a bank’s FinTech exits.

Critical Essays in Islamic Banking and Finance

JATMIKO, WAHYU (2021) Critical Essays in Islamic Banking and Finance. Doctoral thesis, Durham University.

This thesis contributes to the socio-economic development of the majority Muslim countries by scrutinizing Islamic banking and finance (IBF). It consists of four papers focusing on the most prominent IBF institution and instrument: Islamic bank (IB) and Islamic securitization (sukūk). The first part of this study (Chapters 2 and 4) empirically investigates the IBF performance on materializing the ethical objectives of Islamic law (Maqāsid al-Sharī’ah). The second part of it (Chapters 3 and 5) theoretically recommends how to disrupt (improve or rebuild) IBF architecture in light of the Maqāsid al-Sharī’ah. Chapters 2 and 4 derive the ethical framework behind the prohibition of ribā and gharar. The former embodies financial decoupling and unjust price gouging, while the latter involves asymmetric information and excessive risk-taking. We then apply these notions to investigate the socio-economic performance of IBs and sukūk empirically. We document that the unethical issues of ribā and gharar are still prevalent in IBs’ most utilized financing of the debt-based mark-up Murabaha and its variants. This result also holds for sukūk, where we establish the positive nexus between its development and income inequality led by ribā and gharar. Chapters 3 and 5 theoretically propose improved structures of IBs and sukūk. We reconstrue the IBs Murabaha facility as trade credit instead of bank credit and integrate it within a modified Universal Banking architecture. It mitigates financial fragility by transforming the debt claim into a risk-sharing one and offering more competitive financing rates. We also disrupt infrastructure sukūk by amalgamating the literature on project financing, charitable endowment, and development finance. We mathematically model the proposed structure emulating the Continuous Workout Financing and Participating Facilities to offer fragile-free infrastructure financing that alleviates financialization and inequality.

Please refer to Regulation 7.4.2 for important information on how to format your thesis.

The Library Services guide 'Presenting your thesis' has been written as the standard for all theses presented for research degrees in the University of Birmingham. 

It offers guidance on the practicalities of producing your thesis in a format that is acceptable for examination and for deposit in the library. This guide does not deal with the content and academic standard required of a thesis and on these matters you are advised to consult University Regulations, your supervisor and guidance issued by your School.

 Thesis word limit

On submitting your thesis for examination you are required to complete a declaration form confirming the word length of your thesis. You should therefore be aware of the maximum word length for your thesis. See  Regulation 7.4.2 (d).

The stated maximum number of words excludes tables, diagrams (including associated legends), appendices, list of references, footnotes and endnotes, the bibliography and any bound published material. For information on referencing styles see the  iCite – referencing at the University of Birmingham  webpages.

A thesis that exceeds the maximum number of words will not be accepted for examination unless permission to exceed the stated word count has been granted by the Research Progress & Awards Sub Panel. Permission to exceed the stated word count is only granted in exceptional circumstances. If you consider that you will not be able to meet the stated word limited, you are advised to discuss this with your supervisor at an early stage.

It is also important to seek the prior agreement of those other people to make your thesis available in the University eTheses Repository. 

 Previously published or submitted work

You may include work that has already been published providing the work is properly integrated, either in the thesis or as an appendix to which reference is made - see  Regulation 7.4.1 (g). It must be adequately referenced and you are advised to consult with your supervisor if you are unsure about the inclusion of any previously published work in your thesis.

 Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of cheating and is a serious academic offence. It arises where work submitted is not the student's own and has been taken from another source. The original material is then hidden from the marker, either by not referencing it properly, by paraphrasing it or by not mentioning it at all.

All theses submitted for examination are checked through plagiarism detection software.

 Editorial help for PGR theses

A thesis submitted for examination at the University of Birmingham must be solely the postgraduate researcher’s own work (except where University Regulations permit the inclusion of appropriately referenced collaborative research or work – see Regulation 7.4.1 . A postgraduate researcher must not employ a ‘ghost writer’ to write parts or all of the thesis, whether in draft or as a final version, on his/her behalf.

Editors, whether they are formal supervisors, informal mentors, family or friends or professional, need to be clear about the extent and nature of help they offer in the editing of University of Birmingham PGRs theses and dissertations. Supervisors of PGRs also need to be clear about the role of the third party editors as well as their own editorial role.

PGRs may use third party editorial assistance (paid or voluntary) from an outside source.  This must be with the knowledge and support of supervisors and the use of third party editorial assistance must be stated in the thesis acknowledgement page.

A ‘third party’ editor cannot be used :

• To change the text of the thesis so as to clarify and/or develop the ideas and arguments;
• To reduce the length of the thesis so it falls within the specified word limit;
• To correct information within the thesis;
• To change ideas and arguments put forward within the thesis; and/or
• To translate the thesis into English.

A ‘third party’ editor can be used to offer advice on:

• Spelling and punctuation;
• Formatting and sorting of footnotes and endnotes for consistency and order;
• Ensuring the thesis follows the conventions of grammar and syntax in written English;
• Shortening long sentences and editing long paragraphs;
• Changing passives and impersonal usages into actives, vice versa as may be appropriate;
• Improving the positioning of tables and illustrations and the clarity, grammar, spelling and punctuation of any text in or under tables and illustrations; and
• Ensuring consistency of page numbers, headers and footers.

Where a third party editor is used it is the PGR’s responsibility to provide the third party editor with a copy of this statement (Word - 20KB)  and ensure they complete the Third Party Editor Declaration Form (Word - 32KB)  confirming their compliance with this statement.

When submitting the thesis the PGR must record in the Acknowledgements page the form of contribution the ‘third party’ editor has made, by stating for example, “this thesis was copy edited for conventions of language, spelling and grammar by ABC Editing Ltd”.

New strategy against breast cancer wins 3 Minute Thesis

PhD candidate Lilly Hatwell’s presentation on breast cancer treatments targeting the androgen receptor has won the 3MT competition and inaugural UNSW Founders Award.

UNSW’s innovative and world-changing doctoral research was on display at the popular 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) final on Tuesday evening.

This year’s 18 contestants distilled their 100,000-word PhD theses into bite-sized three-minute talks, delivered in front of a packed audience at Leighton Hall in the John Niland Scientia Building.

Topics ranged from modifying food prices to help improve diets, to using AI to improve transport planning, and the 16 traits that make for a charismatic leader.

The winner of the $3000 top prize was Lilly Hatwell from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and UNSW Medicine & Health. She delivered an engaging presentation on game-changing tactics against breast cancer.

“I am incredibly honoured and thrilled to have received first prize and the UNSW Founders Award. The quality and diversity of research across UNSW is inspiring and it is such an exciting event to be a part of,” Lilly said.

Lilly’s presentation spoke about the ‘hormonal tug of war’ in the fight against the most common form of breast cancer. The hormone estrogen is already known to promote the proliferation of cancer cells, and as such, most current strategies target the estrogen receptor. However, many patients develop resistance to this type of treatment.

Her thesis flips the focus and targets a different hormone receptor – the androgen receptor – using a drug that increases its expression. This approach helps the androgen receptor suppress the tumour and steals genes that the estrogen receptor needs to drive tumour growth. Her research combines this drug with clinically available targeted therapies to hopefully identify effective combinations.

Lilly was also presented with the inaugural UNSW Founders Award that recognises the best story deserving to win an award.

She will now go on to represent UNSW at the Asia-Pacific 3MT Finals at the University of Queensland, as well as the International Universitas 21 competitions.

UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Attila Brungs, extended his praise to all the PhD researchers who presented.

“My congratulations go out to all 3MT finalists for their ongoing dedication to their fascinating research. Each finalist demonstrated the diverse and forward-thinking research that UNSW is renowned for, and I have been left feeling incredibly inspired,” Prof. Brungs said.

“Lilly Hatwell’s presentation on breast cancer treatments targeting the androgen receptor combined with patient specific treatments was outstanding. She displayed exceptional knowledge in her field of research and communicated it to the audience in a clear and engaging manner.”

This year’s 3MT judges included Director of Marinya Capital and newspaper proprietor John Fairfax AO; Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Suzanne Cotter; Co-founder of The Daily Aus, Zara Seidler; UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President, Attila Brungs; and UNSW Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Enterprise Professor Bronwyn Fox.

Professor Jonathan Morris, UNSW’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research Training and Dean of Graduate Research, said the highlight of this year’s 3MT competition was seeing the University’s talented PhD candidates demonstrate their ability to communicate their world class research.  

“Our PhD candidates are engaged in high quality research and these presentations demonstrate the impact that their research has on society. The 3MT competition showcases their work in a really engaging and accessible way,” Prof. Morris said. 

“I want to congratulate all our outstanding finalists for their efforts. This competition is the highlight of the higher degree research calendar and it’s one of the University’s premier events because it showcases the people who carry out the research and the quality of their work.” 

3MT awardees

Milad Mousavi from the Faculty of Engineering took second place with his innovative research presentation, ‘The Invisible Guardian of the Underground Galaxy’. His research addresses the many lives lost in the mining sector and aims to use a digital invisible guardian to predict accidents.

Third place was awarded to Ellen Bowden-Reid from The Kirby Institute and UNSW Medicine & Health for her presentation on RNA vaccines: the secret weapon against pandemic viruses.

The audience voted for their favourite 3MT in the People’s Choice award, which was awarded to Sari Puspita Dewi from the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture for her presentation on why Indonesian translation of academic textbooks is confusing and how it can be fixed to improve learning.
