The knowledge and skills you’ll develop, the differences between speech-language pathology and audiology, professional licensure and certification.

This program prepares students to enter graduate programs in communication science and disorders, audiology and others. While the degree provides students with quality academic preparation, it doesn’t guarantee that students will accrue the requisite clinical hours to apply for licensure as a speech-language pathologist or audiology assistant. Since certification and licensure requirements for speech-language pathologists and audiology assistants vary by profession and state, we recommend visiting the professional licensure page for the contact information for the appropriate licensing entity to seek information and guidance on the requirements. For specific questions, please contact your program director or degree coordinator.

Will my diploma say ‘online’?

No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.”

Courses in speech pathology, audiology, phonetics and more

Courses in this program expand your science and quantitative skills, covering speech and language science, anatomy and physiology, physics and statistics. Building on this foundational knowledge, you’ll also explore topics from communication disorders throughout the lifespan and phonetics to language science and treatment of communication disorders. The program culminates in a hands-on, experiential learning opportunity, which can be a research project, internship, capstone project and more.

The jobs and career paths you’ll be prepared for

Upon graduation, you’ll be equipped to take the next step toward your career goals. You can seek entry-level speech and hearing roles in schools, medical clinics and community organizations. You can also work toward completing the remaining requirements to become a licensed speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA) in your state. Graduates often use this program as a springboard for advanced studies in communications sciences, speech-language pathology or audiology. The knowledge you’ll gain in this bachelor’s in speech and hearing science will prepare you for the rigor of any of these programs. Common career path examples include, but aren’t limited to:

Mikeie Reiland, MFA

Updated: Mar 8, 2024, 2:25pm

Speech-language pathologists help patients dealing with communication disorders. These highly qualified professionals work with children and adults, often practicing in schools, healthcare facilities and private practices. They need patience, empathy, enthusiasm and a great deal of specialized knowledge.

Before practicing in the field, speech-language pathologists must earn licensure in their home states, which generally requires a master’s degree. Online degrees make this career path more accessible, as online speech pathology programs only require a limited amount of in-person clinical and internship experiences.

Read on to learn more about which accredited, nonprofit colleges in the U.S. offer online speech pathology master’s programs . We provide an overview of each school and program, including tuition and course requirements.

Whether an online speech pathology degree is a good fit for you depends on your unique goals and circumstances. To clarify your decision, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What are your other commitments? If you are a parent or plan to work while earning your speech pathology degree , a flexible online program can help you manage your commitments. You may want to enroll in a program that delivers coursework asynchronously, or without scheduled class times. However, even online SLP programs require in-person experiences.
  • What’s your budget? Online learning is often more affordable than on-campus learning, as distance learners generally avoid costs associated with housing and transportation. Some state schools also allow out-of-state students to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates as long as they enroll only in online courses.
  • What’s your learning style? Online learning requires organization, discipline and time management. If you rely on a peer group or classroom structure to help you exhibit those qualities, on-campus learning might provide a better fit.

When researching the best schools for speech pathology, look for two types of accreditation : institutional and programmatic.

Regional agencies award institutional accreditation to entire schools. With approval from the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education (CHEA), accrediting organizations vet schools for the quality of their programs, finances and faculty, among other factors. You should enroll only at an institutionally accredited school. Otherwise, you will be ineligible for federal student aid, and some employers may not recognize your degree.

To verify a prospective school’s accreditation status, visit their website or check CHEA’s directory .

Specific programs can earn programmatic accreditation. Not every field requires this type of accreditation, but it’s fairly common in speech-language pathology. Look for accreditation from the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). This indicates the program meets high standards and will prepare you for state licensure.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online master’s degree in speech pathology leads to a limited set of career opportunities. Before enrolling in this highly specialized program, evaluate your long-term goals. Look into salary expectations, job opportunities and day-to-day responsibilities to make sure you want to pursue this role.

If you’re enthusiastic about a career in speech-language pathology , enrolling in a CAA-accredited program will prepare you to excel. These programs include clinical experience through practicum experiences, internships and externships, which you need to qualify for state licensure.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the five speech-language pathology programs in our guide ranged from $463 to $964, while credit requirements ranged from 45 to 76. Total tuition for our tanked programs totaled $24,525 to $60,732.

The National Center for Education Statistics found that graduate tuition and fees averaged $20,513 annually as of the 2021–22 academic year. Since most SLP programs take around three or four years to finish, this rate translates to approximately $62,000 for a full master’s degree in speech pathology. Comparatively, many of the programs on our list cost less.

Make sure to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) as your first recourse for financial aid. The FAFSA can help you access scholarships, loans, grants and work-study programs. Many of these opportunities are also available through schools and nonprofit organizations.

Post-Graduation Licensure

For states denoted in blue, USAHS has determined the program satisfies the educational requirements for professional licensure in those states. USAHS has not made a determination regarding whether the MS-SLP program satisfies the requirements for professional licensure in the states denoted in gray. Note on Licensure, Authorization, Endorsement, or Other State Credential Necessary to Practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist

Each state board that is responsible for regulating the practice of speech-language pathologists has its own academic requirements and issues its own license to practice in that state. Most state licensing boards require that Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program graduates graduate from a CAA accredited or Accreditation Candidate status Speech-Language Pathology program and pass the Praxis Speech-Language Pathology exam to apply for an intern/provisional license while working on their Clinical Fellowship (CF) for national certification (Certificate of Clinical Competence, CCC) requirements. Licensure requirements may vary in school or other settings. The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).

It remains the student’s responsibility to understand, evaluate, and comply with all requirements relating to field education experiences, licensing or certification, authorization or endorsement for the state in which she or he resides.

Current and admitted students are also advised to monitor this page for any updates prior to relocating to another state, as this can have an impact on continued enrollment in the program and the ability to be placed for on-the-ground activities or practicum experiences.  Additionally, current and prospective students are advised if they choose to relocate to carefully review, evaluate and understand the requirements of the applicable licensure board in the state in which they intend to relocate.

Speech-Language Pathology in a School Setting

Some states require an additional certification or license in order to work in a school setting. Students should be advised that the USAHS’ MS-SLP program is designed and intended to prepare graduates for SLP licensure in many states. However, graduates may need to complete additional requirements to be eligible for a license or certificate to work in a school setting or to have the ability to complete practicum in a school setting in their particular state of residence or school district, depending on the state and/or school district’s unique requirements.  Students should contact the state board of education or his or her school district directly to determine if the USAHS’ MS-SLP program meets the requirements for state SLP certification or licensure in a school setting.

Note on ASHA Certification

Speech-Language Pathology program graduates must hold a degree from a Speech-Language Pathology program that is accredited or in Accreditation Candidate status by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA), and complete the Clinical Fellow (CF) experience, in order to be eligible to apply for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology by the American Speech and Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Council for Clinical Certification. This credential is required in order to practice as a nationally certified speech-language pathologist in many settings in many states. The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences MS-SLP program is accredited by the CAA.

Note on Praxis Speech-Language Pathology Exam

All states require that SLP graduates pass the Praxis Speech-Language Pathology exam in order to be eligible to practice as a licensed speech-language pathologist.

"As I began graduate school, I felt disadvantaged compared to my peers as my undergraduate degree wasn't in Communication Sciences. Halfway through my first semester, I could see how well Longwood's SLP Online Prerequisites prepared me for graduate school and taught me the foundational skills I needed! I have so many helpful resources that I've saved and have been referencing throughout the semester. All in all, the SLP Online Prerequisites prepared me for my graduate school work and I'm so glad that I chose Longwood."

You might be wondering...

Children understand more words (receptive language) than they use (expressive language). Babies may not understand the meaning of our words at first, but they understand our tone of voice and observe their surroundings. Your baby is learning that sounds become words, so use your language, tone of voice, and facial expressions to help them along their learning journey.

The most important consideration in helping develop speech and language is personal interaction. Any  toy or activity  can be used as an implement for learning, but it is the person-to-person contact that makes the difference.

We learn to talk by listening to and observing other people. Conversation is a social experience, with give and take. So join in and play! Use  whatever toys your child enjoys  and  engage . Talk about what you’re doing together. Use short simple sentences. Then  wait , and listen to your child communicate in his own way. Scientific evidence supports the fact that this kind of experience is the best foundation for developing words and sentences.

Early intervention  with speech therapy has been proven to benefit children who are diagnosed with a speech and language impairment. Early Intervention can mold a child's developmental speech and language path and improve outcomes, both for children and their families.

While speech and language development are crucial to a child’s future academic success, it doesn’t mean that language delays assure academic frustration and poor outcomes. If children with language development delays receive assistance from a Speech–Language Pathologist early on (before kindergarten), they can catch up with their peers. Research has shown that children who reach developmental language milestones earlier are more likely to do better academically later in life. So again, early intervention is key to promoting academic success.

Always trust your instincts; you are with your child the most. Some may say that a child will “outgrow” a speech or language delay, and in some cases this is true. But it is impossible to know which children will outgrow their delay and which will need support from a speech-language therapist. Pursuing early intervention allows you to find the specific answers you need through a speech and language evaluation. The result will be a diagnosis and recommendation for therapy services if needed.

Parents should be intentional about encouraging their younger children to speak as much as the older children. It’s easy to overlook! Early signs of language delay are important for all children, regardless of birth order.

No, it is never too early for a child to receive support.

In our experience, many delayed talkers who finally make attempts to speak are difficult to understand.  It sounds like gibberish ! All young children make some errors in pronunciation–some are typical for their age and some are not. Children usually outgrow most articulation errors on their own by age three. To determine whether the “gibberish” your child is making reflects common pronunciation errors and whether speech therapy is recommended, make an appointment with a speech-language pathologist.

Regression is not a typical part of natural development, but it can occur for different reasons. Most of the time regression lasts for just a short time.

For example, a child might become ill and have to stay in bed rather than engaging in learning activities. I have seen minor regression when our clients have been ill for an extended time, but soon they're back to where they started and are moving forward again. Another example is when a new baby is born into the family. Since the baby gets a lot of attention by crying, the older child might cry instead of using words.

Regression can also be the result of a stressor affecting family life. Rest assured that these examples of regression are temporary and can be an indicator that something else is going on. It’s a good idea to talk to a professional about any regression you’ve noticed.

Call a professional. Speech/Language Pathologists have a master’s degree specifically in speech and language development. Many parents have had their concerns shrugged off by friends, family members, or even their pediatrician. Friends and family are well-meaning, but they aren’t the experts. We cannot count the number of times parents have confided in us that they regretted not seeking help earlier. If you are concerned, trust your gut and seek the advice of a professional. Many speech/language clinics are happy to provide complementary screenings/consultations, to hear your concerns, and to give their opinion as to whether or not an evaluation would be beneficial for your child.

According to  Foundation Therapy Services, Inc.  Communication Developmental Milestone  Red Flags   to watch for include but are not limited to the following:

  • At 6 months my child does not laugh, squeal or look toward sounds.
  • At 9 months my child has limited or no babbling or does not indicate when they are happy or upset.
  • At 12 months my child does not point to objects or use gestures such as waving or shaking head.
  • At 15 months my child has not spoken their first words and does not respond to “no” or “bye bye.”
  • At 18 months my child does not speak at least 6-10 words consistently.
  • At 20 months my child does not use at least 6 consonant sounds or does not hear well or discriminate between sounds.
  • At 24 months my child has a vocabulary of less than 50 words or has decreased interest in social interactions.
  • At 36 months strangers have difficulty understanding my child or my child uses simple sentences.

Children develop at their own pace. One child's word count will not be the same as that of another child of the same age. If you have concerns that your little one should be saying more words, check out our milestone checklist here for next steps.

No.  Being exposed to many languages  will make no difference as to when your child begins to talk as compared to children who are learning a single language. It is best to keep languages separate rather than combining them in a conversation

Speak to your child in YOUR strongest language so he has a good language model.

We can help your child climb the language ladder.

Parents concerned about their child’s development feel deep relief and delight when their offspring goes through speech therapy and overcomes communication disorders and go on to speak, read and write without difficulty. The Academy of Skills designed this informative course for professionals who work in the field of speech therapy as well as anyone who cares for someone facing speech challenges. Speech therapy benefits children and also does a lot of good for adults who may experience speech issues acquired after incidences like strokes, injury, tumours or dementia.

Our first topic explains how language pathologists treat numerous communication disorders. We examine the techniques used by speech therapists to help children and adults who struggle to speak, listen or understand language. The course demonstrates how to evaluate and treat communication issues using one-on-one, group and computer-aided treatments. People of all ages who experience vocal issues can benefit from speech therapy, including those who have trouble swallowing and properly forming words. We go through a number of speech issues and the treatments used to help patients overcome them.

The course then examines the industry standards implemented when researching effective speech therapy methods to use with patients. We discuss the research methodology, science and clinical practice of speech therapy as well as the social concerns that are critical in evidence-based speech therapy practice. We discuss the ethical principles that speech therapists must follow if they want to help their clients effectively. This course suits anyone who wants to make a significant impact in the lives of those who experience communication disorders. Speech therapy can transform people’s lives so sign up to acquire this valuable skill.

Why people Love Kayla's COurseS

Yesenia C.

As a speech therapist, I know the importance of helping your baby learn to talk.

You want what’s best for your child, both today and long term. You want to understand your child’s thoughts and feelings, but can’t because of delayed language development. You wish to help your child, but find yourself feeling lost and overwhelmed—unsure of what steps to take.

Add to that the cost of speech therapy , complex insurance policies , 12+ month waitlists , and the feeling of uncertainty—and it’s clear you may find yourself feeling helpless and unable to sleep at night, worrying about your toddler and unsure how delayed their development is, or how to help them.

That’s why I created the Walkie Talkie Speech Therapy online courses . I’ve experienced the heartbreak of having a child in the family struggle to communicate, which is why I’m focused on creating more accessible speech therapy programs for kids.

My course give you the tools and guidance needed to make an immediate difference in your child’s life.

I Am Kayla Chalko.
