The acknowledgements section is your opportunity to thank those who have helped and supported you personally and professionally during your thesis or dissertation process.

Thesis or dissertation acknowledgements appear between your title page and abstract  and should be no longer than one page.

In your acknowledgements, it’s okay to use a more informal style than is usually permitted in academic writing , as well as first-person pronouns . Acknowledgements are not considered part of the academic work itself, but rather your chance to write something more personal.

Generally, there are two main categories of acknowledgements: professional and personal .

A good first step is to check your university’s guidelines, as they may have rules or preferences about the order, phrasing, or layout of acknowledgements. Some institutions prefer that you keep your acknowledgements strictly professional.

Regardless, it’s usually a good idea to place professional acknowledgements first, followed by any personal ones. You can then proceed by ranking who you’d like to thank from most formal to least.

• Chairs, supervisors, or defense committees
• Funding bodies
• Other academics (e.g., colleagues or cohort members)
• Editors or proofreaders
• Librarians, research/laboratory assistants, or study participants
• Family, friends, or pets

Typically, it’s only necessary to mention people who directly supported you during your thesis or dissertation. However, if you feel that someone like a high school physics teacher was a great inspiration on the path to your current research, feel free to include them as well.

Professional acknowledgements

It is crucial to avoid overlooking anyone who helped you professionally as you completed your thesis or dissertation. As a rule of thumb, anyone who directly contributed to your research process, from figuring out your dissertation topic to your final proofread, should be mentioned.

A few things to keep in mind include:

• Even if you feel your chair didn’t help you very much, you should still thank them first to avoid looking like you’re snubbing them.
• Be sure to follow academic conventions, using full names with titles where appropriate.
• If several members of a group or organization assisted you, mention the collective name only.
• Remember the ethical considerations around anonymized data. If you wish to protect someone’s privacy, use only their first name or a generic identifier (such as “the interviewees”)/

Personal acknowledgements

There is no need to mention every member of your family or friend group. However, if someone was particularly inspiring or supportive, you may wish to mention them specifically. Many people choose to thank parents, partners, children, friends, and even pets, but you can mention anyone who offered moral support or encouragement, or helped you in a tangible or intangible way.

Some students may wish to dedicate their dissertation to a deceased influential person in their personal life. In this case, it’s okay to mention them first, before any professional acknowledgements.

After you’ve compiled a list of who you’d like to thank, you can then sort your list into rank order. Separate everyone you listed into “major thanks,” “big thanks,” and “minor thanks” categories.

• “Major thanks” are given to people who your project would be impossible without. These are often predominantly professional acknowledgements, such as your advisor, chair, and committee, as well as any funders.
• “Big thanks” are an in-between, for those who helped you along the way or helped you grow intellectually, such as classmates, peers, or librarians.
• “Minor thanks” can be a catch-all for everyone else, especially those who offered moral support or encouragement. This can include personal acknowledgements, such as parents, partners, children, friends, or even pets.

How to phrase your acknowledgements

To avoid acknowledgements that sound repetitive or dull, consider changing up your phrasing. Here are some examples of common sentence starters you can use for each category.

Note that you do not need to write any sort of conclusion or summary at the end. You can simply end the acknowledgements with your last thank you.

Here’s an example of how you can combine the different sentences to write your acknowledgements.

A simple construction consists of a sentence starter (in purple highlight ), followed by the person or entity mentioned (in green highlight ), followed by what you’re thanking them for (in yellow highlight .)

Acknowledgements

Words cannot express my gratitude to my professor and chair of my committee for her invaluable patience and feedback. I also could not have undertaken this journey without my defense committee, who generously provided knowledge and expertise. Acknowledgements 101: The Basics

The acknowledgements section in your thesis or dissertation is where you express gratitude to those who helped bring your project to fruition. This section is typically brief (a page or less) and less formal, but it’s crucial to thank the right individuals in the right order .

As a rule of thumb, you’ll usually begin with academic support : your supervisors, advisors, and faculty members. Next, you’ll acknowledge any funding bodies or sponsors that supported your research. You’ll then follow this with your intellectual contributors , such as colleagues and peers. Lastly, you’ll typically thank your personal support network , including family, friends, and even pets who offered emotional support during your studies.

As you can probably see, this order moves from the most formal acknowledgements to the least . Typically, your supervisor is mentioned first, due to their significant role in guiding and potentially evaluating your work. However, while this structure is recommended, it’s essential to adapt it based on any specific guidelines from your university. So, be sure to always check (and adhere to) any requirements or norms specific to your university.

The Purpose of Acknowledgements

The acknowledgement section of a thesis or dissertation is where you recognise and thank those who supported you during your PhD. This can be but is not limited to individuals, institutions or organisations.

Although your acknowledgements will not be used to evaluate your work, it is still an important section of your thesis. This is because it can have a positive (or negative for that matter) influence the perception of your reader before they even reach the main body of your work.

Who Should I Acknowledge?

Acknowledgements for a PhD thesis will typically fall into one of two categories – professional or personal.

Within these categories, who you thank will ultimately be your decision. However, it’s imperative that you pay special attention to the ‘professional’ group. This is because not thanking someone who has played an important role in your studies, whether it be intentional or accidental, will more often than not be seen as a dismissal of their efforts. Not only would this be unfair if they genuinely helped you, but from a certain political aspect, it could also jeopardise any opportunities for future collaborations .

Professional Acknowledgements

This may include, but is not limited to:

• Funding bodies/sponsorship providers
• Supervisors
• Research group and lab assistants
• Research participants
• Proofreaders

Personal Acknowledgements

• Key family members and friends
• Individuals who inspired you or directly influenced your academic journey
• Anyone else who has provided personal support that you would like to mention

It should be noted that certain universities have policies which state only those who have directly supported your work, such as supervisors and professors, should be included in your acknowledgements. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you read your university guidelines before writing this section of your thesis.

How to Write Acknowledgements for PhD Thesis

When producing this section, your writing style can be more informal compared to the rest of your thesis. This includes writing in first person and using more emotive language. Although in most cases you will have complete freedom in how you write this section of your thesis, it is still highly advisable to keep it professional. As mentioned earlier, this is largely because it will be one of the first things your assessors will read, and so it will help set the tone for the rest of your work.

In terms of its structure, acknowledgements are expected to be ordered in a manner that first recognises the most formal support before moving onto the less formal support. In most cases, this follows the same order that we have outlined in the ‘Who Should I Thank’ section.

When thanking professionals, always write out their full name and provide their title. This is because although you may be on a first-name basis with them, those who read your thesis will not. By providing full names and titles, not only do you help ensure clarity, but it could also indirectly contribute to the credibility of your thesis should the individual you’re thanking be well known within your field.

If you intend to include a list of people from one institution or organisation, it is best to list their names in alphabetical order. The exception to this is when a particular individual has been of significant assistance; here, it would be advisable to list them.

How Long Should My Acknowledgements Be?

Acknowledgements vary considerably in length. Some are a single paragraph whilst some continue for up to three pages. The length of your acknowledgement page will mostly depend on the number of individuals you want to recognise.

As a general rule, try to keep your acknowledgements section to a single page. Although there are no word limits, creating a lengthy acknowledgements section dilutes the gratitude you’re trying to express, especially to those who have supported you the most.

Where Should My Acknowledgements Go?

In the vast majority of cases, your acknowledgements should appear directly after your abstract and before your table of contents.

However, we highly advise you to check your university guidelines as a few universities set out their own specific order which they will expect you to follow.

The length of an acknowledgement section varies depending on the individual and the nature of the project.

Some people prefer to keep their acknowledgements brief and only thank those individuals who made significant contributions to their work.

Others may choose to include a more extensive list of people, such as mentors, colleagues, and friends, who provided support and encouragement throughout the process.

In general, it is recommended to keep your acknowledgements concise and focused on those who had a direct impact on the project.

Including a heartfelt thank you to these individuals is a meaningful way to show appreciation for their efforts.

However, it is important not to get carried away and turn the acknowledgement page into a long list of names. Remember that the focus should be on quality rather than quantity, as the acknowledgement section should not overshadow the main content of the project. 

Where Should My Acknowledgements Go In My PhD Thesis?

The placement of your acknowledgements can vary, but it’s typically located in the first part of your thesis.

Mine is right after the abstract and before the introduction of my PhD thesis. 

You can place it right before your dissertation abstract or before the table of contents. However, the exact positioning may depend on the guidelines and requirements provided by your university.

Always ensure to check your university’s formatting requirements to be sure you’ve chosen the correct location for your acknowledgements section.

First things first: who should you include in your dissertation acknowledgments? If you’re not sure who to thank, try the brainstorming technique to generate some ideas. Consider these two approaches:

• Make a list of everyone, both professional and personal, who was involved at any point during your work on your dissertation, and then thin down the list from there.
• Make a list of the pivotal aspects of your process and think about who was involved and how they helped.

As you select the people and groups to include in your dissertation acknowledgments, keep in mind that it’s essential to acknowledge your supervisor and anyone else with a visible connection to your work.

It’s an unfortunate reality that not every supervisor goes above and beyond to provide feedback and guidance to the students they are supposed to supervise. However, leaving them out, even if you personally felt disappointed by their involvement or lack thereof, could be seen as a snub.

You should end up with a fairly short list of people to thank. While being mindful of professional etiquette and personal feelings, be choosy about who makes the final cut since your acknowledgments should be limited to no more than a page.

Now that you have your list of people and groups to thank, it’s time to start writing. Before your first pen or keystroke, however, check your university’s guidelines as your institution may have specific rules around what can and cannot be included.

The standard practice is to begin with the formal and then progress to the informal, so the first people to mention would be:

• supervisors
• committee members
• other professional contacts

Use their full names and titles and go into brief detail about how they contributed to your work.

Once those are done, you can move on to the personal thanks, which can include friends, family, even pets. If you are so inclined, it is also considered appropriate to thank God or make mention of spiritual support.

You may also choose to inject a little humor at this point, but don’t get carried away and definitely don’t include sarcasm or critical comments of any kind, including self-critical ones. Remember that the acknowledgments precede your dissertation, so you want to be taken seriously.

A couple more basics that are essential when creating your acknowledgments:

• Position: Acknowledgments should be placed after the title page and before the abstract.
• Perspective: Write from the first-person perspective and speak in your own voice.

A really good way to get a sense of how to write your own dissertation acknowledgments is to read ones written by others. Notice which ones you respond particularly well to and use them as a model upon which to base your own.

Thesis acknowledgements: Samples and how to write your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements

Writing a thesis can be tricky. That’s why I’m starting a new series covering each section of the thesis, from thesis acknowledgements all the way to conclusions. I’ll be guiding you through the whole process, from what to include in your thesis to how to write it, along with examples from defended theses to help you to write your own.

We’ll begin by covering thesis acknowledgments. The acknowledgements section appears at the start of the thesis so it is often one of the first parts that everyone tries to tackle. As this will likely be your first taste of your thesis it can often feel quite intimidating to write!

Thankfully it’s also one of the easiest parts of the thesis to complete, which may help to give you a boost for the rest.

In this post we’ll cover everything to do with thesis acknowledgements: samples, what to include and how to write them. At the end I’ll also outline a 60 minute exercise which will get you preparing a first draft of your own! I’ve also got a similar post to craft your thesis title, which you can check out here .

I’m writing this post with a PhD thesis in mind but it could work just as well if you’re looking for help including acknowledgements in your Master’s or undergraduate thesis/ dissertation.

What is the purpose of the acknowledgements section in a thesis?

The acknowledgements section of your thesis is an opportunity to reflect on the people who have supported and shaped your PhD experience.

Don’t worry, although your examiners will be interested to read your acknowledgements section, you won’t really get judged on it in your PhD viva. This section is for you to share as little, or as much, as you want about everyone involved in your PhD journey.

The acknowledgements are a very personal section of your thesis and each PhD student will have different things they want to include. For example, many people wonder: How do I thank my family in a thesis? And the acknowledgements section is the answer!

Note – You can also use a thesis dedication to thank your family. This is a separate section to your thesis acknowledgements and is entirely optional. It’s usually just a single line, just like you might find at the front of some books. Most people don’t include a separate dedication section but you can if you want to go that extra step.

What to include in your thesis acknowledgements

There are usually no formal requirements dictating what to include in your acknowledgements. However, do double check for any potential rules at your specific institution.

In general the acknowledgements are the section of your thesis where you have some creative liberty and are not bound by rigid research protocols or guidelines.

Many students choose to use the acknowledgements section to thank people (or organisations) who:

• Introduced them to the topic
• Helped with their PhD application
• Funded the project
• Supervisors
• Technicians
• Partners, friends or family
• Or anyone else who made an impression along the way!

But remember, you can include whatever you want! For example in my own PhD acknowledgements, which you’ll read further down this post, I thanked the university for providing a green outdoor space for us.

Acknowledge whoever and whatever influenced your own PhD experience.

You may find it helpful to start by writing a list of everyone you wish to thank.

How do you write an acknowledgements section?

Since there are no guidelines to worry about, it is really up to you how you write your own thesis acknowledgements. You have a lot of freedom for what to include and how to write it.

However you may find the following suggested phases helpful as a starting point.

Who you want to thank…

• “First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to…”
• “I must thank…”
• “A special thanks to…”
• “I would like to highlight two truly exceptional people from…”
• “I want to thank…”
• “In addition, I would like to mention”
• “I would also like to extend my thanks to…”
• “I want to give my deepest appreciation to…”
• “Finally, but the most importantly, I would like to thank…”

…then, why you want to thank them

It can be nice to also include why you’re thanking these people, using phrases such as:

• “…for the opportunity to be a part of this project”
• “…for always being there when I needed his support, reviewing my progress constantly, and guiding me through my PhD studies”
• “….for being a great bunch of people in and out of the lab”
• …”for all the guidance, support and outstanding feedback”
• “… who took their time to help teach me…”
• “…for her unlimited support and unconditional guidance during my PhD journey”
• “…were always there for discussions about anything that I was unsure on”
• “…whom has offered invaluable advice that will benefit me throughout my life”
• “…for supporting me since my undergraduate, and for the valuable discussions we had along the road”
• “…for making the past 4 years much more enjoyable and keeping me sane throughout the whole process”

Some people will choose to use full names and titles for any professional acknowledgements and first names for any personal ones. Again, this is up to you.

To help illustrate the variety of thesis acknowledgement formats, we’ll shortly be coming on to some examples of acknowledgment sections from successfully defended theses.

Before then I want to cover some of the main questions relating to how to write your own thesis acknowledgements section:

How long should you spend writing your thesis acknowledgements?

My suggestion is to spend only an hour or two making a first draft. I suggest doing this well ahead of your final deadline so that you have time to come back to it. Even so, I’d certainly look to spend far less than one day’s work on it in total.

It is a “nice to have” and means a lot to a lot of people, but remember you’re really only writing this section for yourself. I probably spent about two hours writing mine in total, simply because it wasn’t a priority for me.

What order should you write your acknowledgements in?

A typical way to write your acknowledgements is to go from the most formal/academic relationships to the least.

It is normal to start with any funding bodies, then formal people like your PhD supervisors, then move through labmates, friends and family. But again, there are generally no rules!

How long should the acknowledgements section be?

You can include as much or as little as you want. My own PhD acknowledgements section was just under a page long and it consisted of 386 words or 1892 characters (without spaces).

Here is how it was formatted:

But let’s not just look at my thesis. Using Imperial’s publicly accessible database I went through 25 published PhD theses for you.

The average (mean) length of these 25 theses was 365 words and 1793 characters without spaces. Writing an acknowledgements section of length 350-450 words was the most common:

The shortest acknowledgements sections was 122 words(653 characters) long. The longest one consisted of 1022 words and 5082 characters. Hopefully this illustrates that you’re not really bound by any limits. Write as much or as little as you want for this section.

My top tips for writing your own thesis acknowledgements

• Don’t spend too long on them. The acknowledgements section is really not worth spending too much time on. Even worse, since they appear at the start of your thesis, it is tempting to write your acknowledgements first. This can be fine, or, it can be an opportunity for lots of unnecessary procrastination. Which I why I instead suggest that you…
• Write your acknowledgements at the end of your first draft of the thesis. There is no need to write your thesis in the order it is presented. If you write your acknowledgements at the end you’ll be less likely to spend precious time on a section which really doesn’t warrant too much brain power.
• Don’t stress about it. The acknowledgements are merely for yourself and for anyone close to you that you want to thank. There are far more important sections for you to be particular about!
• Remember: You can make changes after you submit the copy for your viva. As with everything in your thesis, you can make changes after you submit the thesis for your viva. The real “final” copy is when you submit your thesis to the university for archiving. Which is even more reason to not spend too much time writing it the first time around.

For the exercise below I’d suggest setting a stop-watch on your phone and move on to the next section when the alarm goes, even if you’ve not fully finished. The aim is to have a rough draft at the end which you can polish off at a later point in time.

• Read a few of the example thesis acknowledgements above to get a feel for the structure ( 15 mins )
• List everyone (or everything!) you wish to thank – including any personal and professional acknowledgements in addition to funding bodies if relevant ( 10 mins )
• Decide on a rough order in which to thank them ( 5 mins )
• Craft some sentences using the phrases mentioned above ( 30 mins )

If you are near the end of your thesis, you can start to think about putting on the finishing touches . One thing you will have to do here is write your acknowledgements. A lot of people worry about this, but there’s really no need. As we are about to show, it’s actually quite simple!

What Are Acknowledgements?

The acknowledgement section of a thesis is where you can thank everyone who has helped you in your research. It is typically located at the beginning of your thesis, right after the contents page, and shouldn’t really be more than one or two pages long. The best thing to do is to keep it concise.

Who Should I Thank?

Think about the people who were of crucial importance during your research. This could include friends, family or professors, or even volunteers who have taken part in your research. It’s also important to acknowledge professional bodies who have given you funding or other help.

How Should I Write It?

There are no strict requirements for the tone of your acknowledgements; it’s essentially the one section where you can be a little bit more informal! Try to make sure the tone fits the person or organization you’re thanking, though, maintaining a formal approach when addressing funding bodies or other official groups.

Other than trying to be concise, the main thing you should keep in mind is varying your language, if only because starting every sentence with “I would like to thank…” will sound a bit dull.

The acknowledgements section is your opportunity to thank those who have helped and supported you personally and professionally during your thesis or dissertation process.

Thesis or dissertation acknowledgements appear between your title page and abstract  and should be no longer than one page.

In your acknowledgements, it’s okay to use a more informal style than is usually permitted in academic writing , as well as first-person pronouns . Acknowledgements are not considered part of the academic work itself, but rather your chance to write something more personal.

Generally, there are two main categories of acknowledgements: professional and personal .

A good first step is to check your university’s guidelines, as they may have rules or preferences about the order, phrasing, or layout of acknowledgements. Some institutions prefer that you keep your acknowledgements strictly professional.

Regardless, it’s usually a good idea to place professional acknowledgements first, followed by any personal ones. You can then proceed by ranking who you’d like to thank from most formal to least.

• Chairs, supervisors, or defence committees
• Funding bodies
• Other academics (e.g., colleagues or cohort members)
• Editors or proofreaders
• Librarians, research/laboratory assistants, or study participants
• Family, friends, or pets

Typically, it’s only necessary to mention people who directly supported you during your thesis or dissertation. However, if you feel that someone like a secondary school physics teacher was a great inspiration on the path to your current research, feel free to include them as well.

Professional acknowledgements

It is crucial to avoid overlooking anyone who helped you professionally as you completed your thesis or dissertation. As a rule of thumb, anyone who directly contributed to your research should be mentioned.

A few things to keep in mind include:

• Even if you feel your chair didn’t help you very much, you should still thank them first to avoid looking like you’re snubbing them.
• Be sure to follow academic conventions, using full names with titles where appropriate.
• If several members of a group or organisation assisted you, mention the collective name only.
• Remember the ethical considerations around anonymised data. If you wish to protect someone’s privacy, use only their first name or a generic identifier (such as ‘the interviewees’).

Personal acknowledgements

There is no need to mention every member of your family or friend group. However, if someone was particularly inspiring or supportive, you may wish to mention them specifically. Many people choose to thank parents, partners, children, friends, and even pets, but you can mention anyone who offered moral support or encouragement, or helped you in a tangible or intangible way.

Some students may wish to dedicate their dissertation to a deceased influential person in their personal life. In this case, it’s okay to mention them first, before any professional acknowledgements.

After you’ve compiled a list of who you’d like to thank, you can then sort your list into rank order. Separate everyone you listed into ‘major thanks’, ‘big thanks’, and ‘minor thanks’ categories.

• ‘Major thanks’ are given to people who your project would be impossible without. These are often predominantly professional acknowledgements, such as your advisor , chair, and committee, as well as any funders.
• ‘Big thanks’ are an in-between, for those who helped you along the way or helped you grow intellectually, such as classmates, peers, or librarians.
• ‘Minor thanks’ can be a catch-all for everyone else, especially those who offered moral support or encouragement. This can include personal acknowledgements, such as parents, partners, children, friends, or even pets.

How to phrase your acknowledgements

To avoid acknowledgements that sound repetitive or dull, consider changing up your phrasing. Here are some examples of common sentence starters you can use for each category.

Note that you do not need to write any sort of conclusion or summary at the end. You can simply end the acknowledgements with your last thank-you.

Here’s an example of how you can combine the different sentences to write your acknowledgements.

A simple construction consists of a sentence starter (in purple highlight ), followed by the person or entity mentioned (in green highlight ), followed by what you’re thanking them for (in yellow highlight .)

Words cannot express my gratitude to my professor and chair of my committee for her invaluable patience and feedback. • Write in first-person, professional language
• Thank your professional contacts first
• Include full names, titles, and roles of professional acknowledgements
• Include personal or intangible supporters, like friends, family, or even pets
• Mention funding bodies and what they funded
• Appropriately anonymise or group research participants or non-individual acknowledgments

Don’t:

• Use informal language or slang
• Go over one page in length
• Mention people who had only a peripheral or minor impact on your work

You may acknowledge God in your thesis or dissertation acknowledgements , but be sure to follow academic convention by also thanking the relevant members of academia, as well as family, colleagues, and friends who helped you.

Yes, it’s important to thank your supervisor(s) in the acknowledgements section of your thesis or dissertation .

Even if you feel your supervisor did not contribute greatly to the final product, you still should acknowledge them, if only for a very brief thank you. If you do not include your supervisor, it may be seen as a snub.

In the acknowledgements of your thesis or dissertation, you should first thank those who helped you academically or professionally, such as your supervisor, funders, and other academics.

Then you can include personal thanks to friends, family members, or anyone else who supported you during the process.

The acknowledgements are generally included at the very beginning of your thesis or dissertation, directly after the title page and before the abstract .

In a thesis or dissertation, the acknowledgements should usually be no longer than one page. There is no minimum length.

How to make an acknowledgment sample

There are people worth mentioning in an acknowledgment sample, and this usually refers to those who have helped the person during the course of his work. The people to mention not only include those who gave their support technically but also financially and emotionally. Cite only those who have substantially contributed to your efforts. Here are some guidelines for when you write an acknowledgment for project:

• Use the right tone A formal document usually has an acknowledgment page found in the end page. Try to avoid personal thoughts which aren’t appropriate, especially if the document deals with a very technical subject. Rather, you can write the acknowledgment in such a manner that it would sound professional. Do this by making it short and more informal compared the other parts of your work. Be specific when talking about those people who supported you in your work. Put a lot of thought into this portion of your document. There are also some cases where the people who helped you would feel uncomfortable if their support is less emphasized over the others. To dismiss this thought, simply list the names alphabetically. This is perfectly acceptable.
• You may also begin with the people who have contributed the most Thanking your mentors is, of course, very important. But you need to start with those people who helped you most in your work. For instance, if you’ve written a thesis, you can mention your thesis adviser or some major professor who has overseen your project first. Next will be the thesis committee members and the other supervising teachers who have directly helped with your project . If a group of people helped you, it’s best to acknowledge them as a group. This is far better than enumerating all of them one at a time. Remember that your acknowledgment sample shouldn’t be too long. However, if you were a part of a smaller committee, it is more customary and prudent to thank every member for their contribution.
• Don’t forget the other people who helped you The lower echelon of researchers and helpers follow, especially if their contributions were as important. Assistants, classmates, and anyone else who helped with your work will also be worth mentioning.
• Cite any financial aid that you received Many school projects get some sort of financial assistance to help in their funding. This especially applies to those who don’t have the resources to conduct their studies. They can get the funding they need through foundations or research groups in the form of grants, scholarships or fellowships. Therefore, it’s fitting to thank these organizations by their names and provide a list of the personal contacts you might have had with them.
• Place the more personal thank you messages and the emotional supporters in the last part In your acknowledgment example, your personal appreciation for relatives and friends should come last. Of course, this doesn’t mean they contributed the least, but such contributions are usually more personal rather than substantial. There’s no need to mention romances as these types of relationships can change as the years go by. Keep your love life out of the page. There’s always that possibility that it will not last. For formality, also avoid inside jokes and personal anecdotes, especially in an academic acknowledgment page.

Acknowledgement Examples

Who should be in the acknowledgment sample?

In books and other written work, you can usually find the acknowledgment for project page at the front, after the inside cover page. Acknowledgments aren’t governed by any rules on who to include. Generally, though, the usual people to include in the acknowledgment sample are:

• Editors These people clean up and correct any errors that you might have missed. They are the fine finishers of written works. Authors should always spare a moment to publicly express their appreciation to the editor’s finishing touches on their manuscripts. You will commonly see writers express their gratitude to their editors in acknowledgment examples.
• Graphic designers The front cover is usually the first thing you notice in a book, even before reading it. The artwork should attract readers, and graphic or book cover designers are the best people to do these and give credit to them.
• Illustrators If you employed an illustrator to visually express the thoughts in your work, the acknowledgment is the best opportunity to express your gratitude for the illustrator’ skills.
• Mentors There’s always that group of individuals who have inspired you and lent their support through the years. They’re the first people who taught and molded you into what you are now. Their valuable contribution is always noteworthy.
• Publishers They publish the book. What else is there to say?
• The members of your family These may include your parents, your siblings, your spouse or your children who lend their support while you wrote the book or made the project.
• Your sources Professionals have the opportunity in the acknowledgment to thank all those who did research work or provided important information that is now part of their work. For instance, you wrote a book which dealt with forensic science. The writer or his researchers will have to meet and interview their sources on the field to understand fully the nature of their job.

Acknowledgements For Project

Writing an acknowledgment sample speech

Acknowledgment samples can either be in the form of a written page or as a speech. There are several rules that you need to follow in making a speech. Mentioning the people who have helped and supported you in more ways than one are always worth mentioning. Here are some tips that you may take into consideration when writing your acknowledgment speech.

• Ideally, the speech should only be up to 2 minutes long To achieve this, make sure that you have prepared beforehand a complete list of all the people who have contributed to your success. Remember that you’re speaking in front of an audience who can get bored with long speeches or who don’t want to hear all of the names of people they don’t know. Mention the most important influencers and keep your speech short.
• Prioritize the people who will be at the event Not all those people who have helped you with your work would attend the presentation. If there are time constraints to your appearance, give priority in mentioning the names of those who are there. Doing this can make the gesture more emotional and significant.
• You can use short anecdotes in your speech Injecting an anecdote to emphasize a point can be helpful to your speech. Choose the anecdote judicially and consider one which involves more than a single person in attendance. This will make the narrative more meaningful and is also an efficient way of saving stage time.
• Choose sincerity over humor There’s always that urge to liven up the audience with attempts of offensive humor or even by poking fun at people. This could work if you were a stand-up comedian. But for acknowledgment speeches, it’s much more appropriate to utilize your limited stage time by expressing your sincerity. Believe it or not, your humble gratitude will resound more than any ironic jokes.

There are other types of acknowledgment samples that you can compose for specific occasions. You can make literary or musical acknowledgments. Others to give thanks for much needed financial contributions. But the main gist to all these types is to acknowledge the support and help of those who contributed to the success of one’s work. H ere are some tips to guide you when making these acknowledgments:

• Think creatively when writing the acknowledgment There’s always a person or an organization who’s responsible for breaking a written opus into the public eye. One who had his work published should afford due recognition to those who first broke the story. Typically, you must list such credits based on the individual publications where they appeared in first. Similar to academic publications, it’s also essential to address those who assisted you financially for your work’s publication. Also, list any fellowships or grants that gave support while you worked on a written opus in your acknowledgments.
• For informal acknowledgment examples, mention you can even mention your friends There’s more fun involved in writing informal acknowledgments, for instance, when thanking people involved in producing music. You don’t need a lot of formalities, and the tone isn’t relevant. Still, you should give credit to the noteworthy.
• Proofread first before finalizing After thanking everyone, it would be very awkward for you to misspell or mispronounce words and names when giving your acknowledgments. An acknowledgment is still an important part of your work. Spend a little more time for revisions and proofreading as you have done in the main project.

Altria Group Is Falling Behind Its Peers, But I'm Holding

• The Altria Group stock price decreased by ~3% after the Q2 2024 earnings release.
• MO continues to struggle within its smokeable product portfolio and cannot offset negative volume effects with positive price/mix effects.
• Smoke-free products hold significant potential. However, much work remains before this potential can be properly realized.
• What's concerning is that the Company has fallen behind its competitors when it comes to navigating market shifts.
• For now, I am holding my stake in shares and keeping MO on my watch list while waiting for more business development or more opportunistic valuation.

Introduction & Investment Thesis

Once again, let's start with a statement: I own a certain stake in Altria Group ( NYSE: MO ). I recently published an MO article and stated that it was a 'hold' for me. To emphasize further - I didn't, and I don't intend to sell my position.

Since publication, the stock price has increased by ~5.4%. On July 31st, Altria Group reported its Q2 2024 results, which led to a stock price decrease of ~3% . In this article, I examine MO's business development during the last quarter and provide a rationale for upholding my 'hold' rating based on the current valuation and the most recent business data. Seeking Alpha - Cash Flow Venue

Two main points differentiate MO from its peer, Philip Morris International ( PM ), which I covered recently ( Philip Morris International Conquers The Ever-Changing World ):

• MO continues to struggle within its smokeable product portfolio and remains unable to offset negative volume effects with positive price/mix effects (contrary to PM)
• Smoke-free products hold significant potential. However, there's still a lot to be done before this potential can be properly realized. What's concerning, MO has fallen behind its competitors when it comes to navigating the market shifts, for example - PM, which conquers the ever-changing world

I've provided more color on the above factors within this analysis. For more clarity:

• I am not concerned about the upcoming dividend payments
• I don't recommend selling MO's shares and don't intend to do so
• I need to see more business development on the smoke-free front or a better valuation to add more to MO. For now, I prefer to build my positions in other businesses and keep MO on my watch list

Smokeable Segment - The Struggle Magnifies

The headwinds faced by traditional tobacco products are no secret to anybody, and such knowledge doesn't require an interest in the tobacco industry - we can observe the social sentiment for smoking shifting in our day-to-day lives. However, it's important to understand that the dynamic of these changes varies from market to market. To illustrate this point, let's discuss the business of Altria's close peer - Philip Morris. PM's key cigarette markets in Q1 2024 were:

• European countries (e.g. Germany, Italy, France, Poland, and Spain)

During the 2019-2023 period (with 2018 as a base year), PM's cigarette volumes declined at a CAGR of 3.7%, which is substantially slower than MO's 6.9% for the same period. This significant difference is due to the US market being a leader in the changes underlying the tobacco industry. PM's markets are less susceptible to these market shifts. Therefore, PM has more time to establish a non-smokeable portfolio before its traditional segment suffers.

PM still manages to grow its net revenue derived from the smokeable segment ( 3.5% in Q1 2024 vs Q1 2023 and 1.2% in Q2 2024 vs Q2 2023 ), whereas MO doesn't have as much time as it has already experienced noticeable revenue declines. PM's pricing/mix/currency effects were enough to offset the negative volume effects. On the other hand, MO's positive price/mix effects weren't sufficient to offset negative volume effects. Such a phenomenon wasn't true for 2019-2022 (especially 2020 with a 6.5% increase in revenue net of excise taxes on a year-over-year basis), but it started to turn around in 2023 and is evident in the Q1-Q2 performance of 2024. To be precise, in Q2 2024, MO's smokeable products segment generated ~4% less revenue (net of excise taxes) when compared to Q2 2023 as a result of:

• negative (12.7%) volume effect
• positive 9.9% price/mix effect

It's worth noting that the negative volume effect increased substantially quarter-over-quarter, and even the considerably stronger positive price/mix effect wasn't enough to offset it.

Moving Beyond Smoking - Unfortunately, Slowly

One can't deny the impressive track record of MO, the number of dividends paid to investors, and its place in many of our portfolios (including mine). However, we have to admit that MO was left behind its peers in navigating the market shift toward smoke-free products.

Let me provide you with a few numbers for PM:

• revenue share of smoke-free products in 2024 - 38.3%
• revenue growth of smoke-free products in Q1 2024 (vs Q1 2023) - 21.1%
• revenue growth of smoke-free products in Q2 2024 (vs Q2 2023) - 16.4%

Let's see similar numbers for MO:

• revenue share of smoke-free products in Q2 2024 - 13%
• revenue growth of oral tobacco products in Q1 2024 (vs Q1 2024) - 3.7%

revenue growth of oral tobacco products in Q2 2024 (vs Q2 2023) - 4.6%

The oral tobacco segment is weighed down by declining Copenhagen and Skoal volumes (-9.6% and -12.0% in Q2 2024 vs Q1 2023, respectively). However, on the bright side, on! continues its growth dynamic and recorded a shipment volume increase of 37.3% in Q2 2024 and 32.1% in Q1 2024 (vs analogical periods of the previous year).

On another bride side, MO has emphasized the development of its e-vapor category, led by NJOY. To quote from the Q2 2024 Earnings Call :

We strengthened NJOY's supply chain to enable our expansion plans. Tripled NJOY's retail footprint to over 100,000 stores, secured premium positioning at retail and more than 80% of contracted stores through NJOY's first trade program. Launched a variety of trial-generating activities with compelling results and introduced a new brand equity campaign with impactful consumer messaging. As a result of these efforts, NJOY saw continued traction at retail during the second quarter and first half as evidenced by volume momentum and share growth. NJOY consumables shipment volume was approximately 12.5 million units for the second quarter and 23.4 million units for the first half. NJOY's device shipment volume was approximately 1.8 million units for the second quarter and 2.8 million units for the first half. Both consumables and device shipment volumes increased sequentially with consumables increasing by 14.7% and devices by 80%.

However, it's important to remember that NJOY is reported within Altria's 'all other' segment, which still had a negligible impact on its business in the first half of 2024.

MO's Q2 2024 10-Q

Altria certainly holds a lot of potential and strives to develop within attractive market segments to properly address the trends underlying the tobacco industry. As stated within its 2028 goals, MO intends to build its presence within e-vapour and heated tobacco product segments as part of its long-term growth. However, there's still a lot to accomplish on that front, especially compared to other players, such as PM.

Financial Stance

The first half of 2024 was in the range of MO's management's expectations, with adjusted diluted earnings upheld in Q2 2024 vs Q2 2023 and down by 1.6%, looking at the first half of 2024 vs the first half of 2023. The Company has narrowed its adj. diluted EPS guidance for 2024 to $5.07 - $5.15, leaving the midpoint guidance intact at $5.11, representing an expected annual growth of 3.2%. Please refer to the chart below for details regarding the adj. diluted EPS and its annual growth rates.

On the bright side of the smokeable products segment, MO improved its OCI margin (on smokeable products) from 60.2% in Q1 2024 to 61.6% in Q2 2024. On the other hand, adj. OCI margin regarding tobacco products declined by 4.9 percentage points, but still stood at a solid 65.6%. There was a substantial adjustment within the oral tobacco segment referring to the impairment of the Skoal trademark amounting to $354m - a non-cash item. Please refer to the chart below, depicting adj. operating margin by MO's key operating segments for details.

MO maintained its balance sheet strength and credit ratings, ranging from BBB to A3 (depending on the agency). Its debt-to-EBITDA ratio amounted to 2.1x (the same as at the end of Q1 2024), which was slightly above MO's target of ~2.0x. Considering MO's profitability and the strength of its balance sheet, I remain confident about upcoming dividend payments.

Valuation Outlook

As an M&A advisor, I usually rely on a multiple valuation method, which is a leading tool in transaction processes. This method allows for accessible and market-driven benchmarking. Numerous metrics are available for valuing a company, with EV/EBITDA being a rule of thumb for most sectors, especially mature ones.

That said, the forward-looking EV/EBITDA stood at:

• 8.7x for MO
• 7.3x for British American Tobacco ( BTI )
• 14.5x for PM
• 9.5x for Japan Tobacco ( OTCPK:JAPAF )

Recent stock price increases of MO were impacted (to some degree) by positive inflation data updates and increasing hopes for the upcoming interest rate cut. Considering the above, as well as recent developments of MO's business (increasing struggles within the traditional segment and still modest development of the smoke-free segment), I believe MO doesn't hold substantial upside potential resulting from the multiple appreciation. I expect it to trade within the 7.5x - 8.5x range.

The Bottom Line

• MO's struggles regarding the smokeable product portfolio increased in Q2 2024 when compared to Q1 2024 on the volume and revenue front. On the bright side, the Company keeps on improving its margin
• As mentioned before, alternative products hold significant potential. However, there's still much to be done before this potential can be properly realized. What's concerning, MO has fallen behind its competitors when it comes to navigating the market shifts
• I don't consider dividends to be endangered. MO remains capable of not only upholding but also growing its dividend payments
• I am not surprised by the business update coming from the Q2 2024 results release. I uphold my 'hold' status on MO as the valuation and the status of smoke-free product development don't align from my perspective
• Despite its significantly higher valuation, I prefer to gradually build my position in PM, as PM conquers the ever-changing world. I am happy to hold my current stake in MO and consider adding upon more business development or seeing a more opportunistic valuation

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran after attending the inauguration of the country’s new president, Iran and the militant group said early Wednesday.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination but suspicion quickly fell on Israel, which has vowed to kill Haniyeh and other leaders of Hamas over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.

What to know:

• The targeting of two senior militant leaders in two Middle Eastern capitals within hours of each other — with each strike blamed on Israel — risks a regional war.
• Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack that killed Haniyeh, but it has a long history of targeted killings .
• Hamas has a history of swift and smooth replacement of leaders killed in Israeli airstrikes, but the war in Gaza could complicate that.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel “will exact a heavy price from any aggression against us on any front.”

It’s his first public statement since the killing of Hamas’ top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in an airstrike in Tehran. Netanyahu did not mention the killing or Iran, whose supreme leader has vowed revenge against Israel.

Hamas and Iran quickly blamed Israel for the shock assassination that has risked escalating into an all-out regional war. The strike that killed Haniyeh came hours after Israel targeted a top commander in Iran’s ally Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today as the U.N.’s top leader presses for international action to keep Mideast tensions from boiling over.

Secretary-General António Guterres sees the airstrikes in Tehran and Beirut as “a dangerous escalation,” spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric says.

Iran requested the emergency meeting. It pressed the U.N.’s most powerful body to address “Israeli aggression and terrorist attacks.” Iran blames Israel for killing Hamas leader Haniyeh. Its U.N. ambassador says the strikes “suggest an intention to escalate conflict and expand the war through the entire region.”

Russia currently holds the council’s rotating presidency.

UNITED NATIONS_ Iran is asking the U.N. Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to address “Israeli aggression and terrorist attacks” after the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran and the targeting of a top Hezbollah commander in the Lebanese capital.

Iranian U.N. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani in a letter on Wednesday blamed both strikes on Israel. He and said they “suggest an intention to escalate conflict and expand the war through the entire region.” He called on the international community for “decisive action to address these violations and hold the perpetrators accountable.”

Israel has taken responsibility for the strike in Beirut, saying it killed a top Hezbollah commander. But Israel has been silent about the strike that killed Haniyeh, though it had vowed to kill him and other Hamas leaders over the group’s Oct. 7 attack that sparked the war in Gaza.

There is no immediate response to Iran’s request from Russia, which currently holds the Security Council’s rotating presidency.

A senior Hamas official has told journalists in Iran that whoever replaces the group’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh will “follow the same vision” regarding negotiations to end the war — and continue in the same policy of resistance against Israel.

Khalil al-Hayya spoke hours after Haniyeh was killed by what he described as a missile in Tehran. Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel, which is keeping silent on it.

Al-Hayya also said Haniyeh’s death will have little practical effect on the militant group’s ability to operate. “It does not deviate from (from its path) as a result of the martyrdom or death of one leader or 10 leaders,” he said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has sent a letter to dozens of foreign ministries around the world saying that “Israel is not interested in an all-out war, but the only way to prevent it is the immediate implementation of (United Nations Security Council) Resolution 1701.” That resolution calls for a full cessation of hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border and a demilitarized zone.

Katz writes that with Israel’s killing of a top commander in Iran’s ally Hezbollah on Beirut on Tuesday, “Israel sent a clear message: we will harm with great force whoever harms us.”

Israel has kept silent on the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in an airstrike in the Iranian capital, which Hamas and Iran have blamed on Israel.

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- The Palestinian party Fatah has long been at odds with Hamas but says it will send a delegation to attend the funeral of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar on Friday.

The Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority administers limited parts of the Israel-occupied West Bank, while Hamas has ruled Gaza. The secular Fatah party and Hamas, a Sunni Islamist party, have long argued over the governance of the two Palestinian territories.

The president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, has condemned Haniyeh’s killing. Israel’s military and government are not commenting on it.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken with the prime minister of Qatar, a key mediator in cease-fire talks for Gaza. The State Department says Blinken “emphasized the importance of continuing to work to reach a cease-fire to the conflict in Gaza that would secure the release of hostages, alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and unlock the possibility of broader stability.”

Blinken also said the U.S. would keep working to ensure a deal is reached in the 10-month war.

Concerns about cease-fire negotiations have soared in the hours after the killing of Hamas’ top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh. Hamas could pull out of the negotiations. Hamas’ top political officials were previously based in Qatar.

The targeting of two senior militant leaders in two Middle Eastern capitals within hours of each other — with each strike blamed on Israel — risks rocking the region at a critical moment.

International mediators are working to bring Israel and Hamas to agree to a cease-fire. Intense diplomatic efforts are also underway to ease tensions between Israel and Hezbollah after months of cross-border fighting. Hezbollah has said it will halt its fire on Israel if a Gaza cease-fire is reached.

The assassination of leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran could prompt Hamas to pull out of talks being mediated by the U.S., Egypt and Qatar, though it has yet to comment on the issue. And the strike against senior Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Beirut could hurt careful attempts to defuse a Middle East powder keg.

And Iran has threatened to respond after the attack on its territory. “The events in Tehran and Beirut push the entire Middle East to a devastating regional war,” said one Western diplomat whose government has engaged in diplomacy to prevent all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah.

BEIRUT — Hamas has a history of swift and smooth replacement of fallen leaders killed in Israeli airstrikes. But after Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination in Iran’s capital, “we are not discussing this matter now,” a Hamas official tells The Associated Press when asked about the process. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The group’s Shura council, the main consultative body, is expected to meet soon, likely after Haniyeh’s funeral in Qatar, to name a new successor .

One expert on Palestinian organizations says the choice is likely between Khaled Mashaal, a veteran Hamas official and former leader, and Khalil al-Hayyah, a powerful figure within Hamas who was close to Haniyeh.

Hamas’ new political leader will have to decide on whether to continue the military option, and become essentially a guerrilla and underground group, or choose a leader that can offer political compromises. That’s an unlikely option at this stage.

CAIRO — The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have declared three days of mourning and directed flags to be lowered after the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran’s capital.

The head of the Houthis’ supreme political council, Mahdi al-Mashat, has blamed Israel. That’s according to the Houthis’ media office. It says he also holds Israel and the U.S. responsible for “expanding the arena of war, confrontation and the wave of assassinations.”

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza — An Israeli airstrike has hit a vehicle in central Gaza, killing at least eight Palestinian men. That’s according to authorities at the nearby al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital where they were taken.

An Associated Press journalist at the hospital counted the bodies after the afternoon strike in the central town of Zawaida.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says more than 39,000 people have been killed in the territory since the war between Israel and Hamas began in October. The ministry doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Hundreds of Palestinian demonstrators have marched through Ramallah in the occupied West Bank in protest against the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

They carried dozens of green Hamas flags and chanted, “The people want al-Qassem Brigade,” a reference to the militant group’s military wing. Others chanted, “We are the men of Muhammad al-Deif,” Hamas’ shadowy military leader targeted in an Israeli strike in Gaza earlier this month.

Open support in Ramallah for Hamas is rare. Ramallah is the administrative capital of the West Bank and is governed by the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority, long at odds with Hamas over the governance of the two Palestinian territories.

“We’ve now seen again that Israel can target anywhere in Iran. But this time there is a question of the safety of the Iranian senior officials,” Nomi Bar-Yaacov, associate fellow with the international security program at Chatham House, tells the AP. “The bodyguard assigned to Ismail Haniyeh was killed, he’s Iranian, and Israel is basically sending a message to the Iranians we can kill any one of you anywhere, anytime. And that is very dangerous.”

And more: “Iran has many long arms known as proxies, but they act as sub-states in many places, in Iraq, in Syria, in Lebanon, in Yemen, in Gaza, of course, in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem. So they have got their people training, arming, planning everywhere, and they can reach anywhere in the world.” Bar-Yaacov said. “They can also hit Israeli or Jewish targets globally. And the question really is, what’s next?

“And it looks like we’re heading for a very serious escalation. But this really is time for very intense diplomacy.”

Speaking just minutes after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed, the European Union’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said that “we have to ask for ways to de-escalate the tensions and avoid a war, which will have an impact on the whole region and beyond.”

Borrell also called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza that would allow “humanitarian access, freedom of hostages and to work towards a two-state solution for a sustainable and lasting peace.”

Qatar’s prime minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, asked on social media: “Can mediation succeed when one party assassinates the negotiator on the other side? Peace needs serious partners & a global stance against the disregard for human life.” Qatar is a mediator in the negotiations.

SINGAPORE – U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the United States had not been aware of and had no involvement in the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran that both Hamas and Iran have blamed on Israel.

Speaking in Singapore, Blinken declined to speculate on the impact Haniyeh’s death would have on efforts to secure a cease-fire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. But he said the incident made it more important to get a deal to ease the suffering of civilians, free hostages held by Hamas and prevent the conflict from escalating.

“First, this is something we were not aware of or involved in,” Blinken said in an interview with Channel News Asia, according to a transcript provided by the State Department.

“I’ve learned over many years never to speculate on the impact that an event has had on something else. So I can’t tell you what this means,” Blinken said.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza — War-weary Palestinians in Gaza are mourning the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh. Some say it will complicate efforts to reach a cease-fire deal with Israel.

“This man could have signed the prisoner exchange deal with the Israelis,” said Saleh al-Shannar, who was displaced from his home in Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza. “Why did they kill him? They killed peace, not Ismail Haniyeh.”

Nour Abu Salam, a displaced woman, said the killing shows that Israel doesn’t want to end the war and establish peace in the region.

“By assassinating Haniyeh, they are destroying everything,” she said.

TEHRAN, Iran — Tens of hardline supporters of Iran’s government have gathered at the University of Tehran to condemn the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Demonstrators chanted “Death to Israel” and “Death to America” while holding pictures of Haniyeh and Palestinian flags.

Amir Hossein Rahemi, a student attending the gathering, says Iran must give a decisive response to the assassination of its guest: “This is necessary for its security and peace.”

Egypt has condemned the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and a Hezbollah commander as a “serious development” that threatens regionalizing the conflict.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Israel’s escalation over the past two days has further complicated cease-fire talks for the Israel-Hamas war.

It reflects “the absence of Israeli political will” to achieve a cease-fire deal, and undermine efforts to stop the war in Gaza, it said.

He had met earlier with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Wednesday that Israel doesn’t want a war following the assassination of a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut.

Gallant did not refer to Haniyeh’s killing in the statement from his office, but said, “We don’t want war but we are preparing for all possibilities.”

Nabih Awada, a Lebanese political analyst close to the Iranian-backed “axis of resistance” and a former fighter with the Lebanese Communist Party, said he expects both the strike in Beirut that killed a Hezbollah commander and the assassination of Hamas’ political leader could spur an “escalation that is different from what we have seen in the past.”

The strike in Beirut targeted a civilian residential area and Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur was targeted “in his home rather than in a military headquarters,” he said. “Therefore, this matter is considered a violation of all rules of engagement.”

Hezbollah, he said, “has developed many equations” including that the response to a strike in Beirut’s “southern suburbs will be in Haifa.”

As for the killing of Haniyeh, he said, “All political leaders in the Hamas movement have a military history in one way or another. However, Ismail Haniyeh was targeted first because he is a political figure par excellence and because he is the head of the political bureau of Hamas. … Therefore, this assassination is mainly a political assassination” and as such might draw a harsher response than the killing of a military commander.

Awada, who spent a decade in Israeli prisons along with some of the current Hamas leaders, said the responses would depend on the facts that emerge from the attacks.

“If the missile was launched from the area of Azerbaijan or from the area of Irbil, the response will be towards these two areas,” Awada said, but if it was launched from the sky, “we will certainly face a different confrontation.”

Malaysia, a strong supporter of Palestinians, strongly condemned Haniyeh’s assassination and called for a thorough investigation.

The Foreign Ministry said the killing reinforced the urgent need to ease tensions.

“Malaysia urges for an immediate and thorough investigation into this assassination, and those responsible to be brought to justice. We also urge all parties to exercise restraint while facts surrounding the assassination are being established,” it said in a statement.

Haniyeh’s body will be buried in Qatar, after a funeral service in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Hamas said in a statement that Haniyeh’s body will be transferred to the Qatari capital, Doha, on Thursday. Muslim funeral prayers will be held there Friday, before his body is buried in a cemetery in Lusail, Qatar’s second-largest city.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov strongly condemned the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and voiced concern that it could further destabilize the region.

“We resolutely condemn the attack that led to Mr. Haniyeh’s death,” Peskov said in a conference call with reporters. “We believe that such action is aimed against attempts to establish peace in the region, and could significantly destabilize the already tense situation.”

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the assassination of Haniyeh and offered condolences to his family and to Palestinians.

“Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations including extrajudicial and extraterritorial killings irrespective of the motives,” the statement read. “We are deeply shocked by the timing of this reckless act, coinciding with the inauguration of the President of Iran, an event attended by several foreign dignitaries” including the Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.

It blamed Israel for the attack, which it called a dangerous escalation that undermines efforts for peace in an already volatile region.

Oil prices jumped more than $2 a barrel, pushed higher by uncertainty over oil supplies if violence flares after the assassination.

U.S. benchmark crude oil was up $2.10 to $76.83 per barrel, and Brent crude, the international standard, jumped $2.04 to $80.11 per barrel.

The Iranian government has declared three days of public mourning over the assassination of the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Iran accused Israel of the attack that killed Haniyeh and said it will face a “harsh and painful response.”

Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard issued a second statement regarding the Haniyeh’s assassination on its website, saying Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed at their residence in the early hours of Wednesday in Tehran.

The statement said, “Undoubtedly, this crime of the Zionist regime will face a harsh and painful response from the powerful and huge resistance front, especially Islamic Iran.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he had heard the reports that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated, but he had no additional information.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has denounced Haniyeh’s killing as a “despicable act” aimed at undermining the Palestinian cause and demoralizing and intimidating its people.

In a post on social media platform X, Erdogan said, “Zionist cruelty will never accomplish its objectives.”

“Turkey will continue to try all avenues, force all doors and support our Palestinian brothers with all our means and strength,” Erdogan said. “We will continue to work for the establishment of a free, sovereign and independent State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Haniyeh was scheduled to deliver a speech in Turkey’s parliament in August, said Omer Celik, spokesperson for Erdogan’s ruling party.

Hamas’ military wing said Haniyeh’s assassination “takes the battle to new dimensions and will have major repercussions on the entire region.”

“The enemy made a miscalculation by expanding the circle of aggression and killing leaders of the resistance in various places and violating the sovereignty of states in the region,” the statement read.

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran, accusing of Israel of being behind the attack, and warned that such attacks could “drag the region towards widening the war and threatens both regional and international security and safety.”

The Taliban’s chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid described Haniyeh as an “intelligent and resourceful Muslim leader” who made great sacrifices. He said the Taliban-run administration considered it an Islamic and humanitarian obligation to defend Hamas and condemn the atrocities perpetrated by Israel.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan once again strongly requests influential parties, especially (from) the Islamic and Arab world, to do their best to stop the Zionist invasion and atrocities in the region,” Mujahid said on X.

China said it condemns the assassination of Haniyeh, and said it was concerned that the leader’s death would lead to further tensions in the region.

“We firmly oppose and condemn the act of assassination. We are deeply concerned that this incident may lead to escalation and turbulence in the region,” said Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian at a daily briefing Wednesday.

“China has always advocated resolving regional disputes through negotiations and dialogues. The Gaza Strip should achieve a comprehensive and permanent cease-fire as soon as possible to avoid further escalation of conflicts and confrontations.”

China served as a mediator between Hamas and Fatah and had gathered the two Palestinian factions together in Beijing last Tuesday to sign an agreement to form a government together after the war. Beijing increasingly has influence in the Middle East and is playing an active role in diplomacy in the region.

A group representing the families of hostages held in Gaza says that, after Haniyeh’s assassination, the only viable way to free the captives is with a cease-fire deal.

The group said military operations have achieved “significant security gains,” but urged progress on a deal to release the roughly 110 remaining hostages and bodies.

“Time is of the essence,” it said in a statement, calling on the Israeli government and world leaders to seal a cease-fire deal.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded to Haniyeh’s assassination and said that Iran considers revenge as its duty, according to his official website.

“The criminal and terrorist Zionist regime martyred our dear guest in our home and made us sad, but it also prepared a harsh punishment for itself,” Khamenei said.

Before attending President Pezeshkian’s swearing-in on Tuesday, Haniyeh met Khamenei.

Khamenei said the assassination happened “in the territory of the Islamic Republic, we consider his revenge as our duty.”

Hamas’ regional allies issued condolences and statements of defiance Wednesday in response to the killing of the group’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in an alleged Israeli strike in Iran.

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah called Haniyeh a “great and honest leader and dear brother” and extended condolences to his family “who have offered dozens of martyrs from among their men and women on the path to liberating Jerusalem and Palestine.”

Yemen’s Houthi rebels called Haniyeh’s assassination a “major escalation and a greater transgression, and a blatant violation of all international laws, norms and covenants” and said the group is “determined to stand by Hamas and all resistance factions in confronting the American-backed Zionist rampage.”

Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a smaller militant group that has been fighting alongside Hamas in Gaza, said that the “sinful assassination” will “not deter our people from continuing the resistance to put an end to the Zionist criminality that has crossed all limits.”

It remains unclear how Hamas’ allies in the region will respond to the killing, as well as to a separate Israeli strike in Lebanon on Tuesday that appears to have killed a top Hezbollah commander.

A senior Russian diplomat decried the Haniyeh killing in Tehran as “an absolutely unacceptable political assassination.”

“This is all very bad. This is an absolutely unacceptable political assassination, and it will lead to further escalation of tensions,” Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned Haniyeh’s assassination, which took place hours after he was sworn in.

Pezeshkian’s post on X said his country will defend its territorial integrity and make those responsible regret their actions.

Hamas has blamed Israel, which has declined to comment.

Qatar has condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh as a “heinous crime and serious escalation.”

In a statement, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said the assassination and “Israel’s reckless behavior” will cause chaos in the region and “undermine peace prospects.” Qatar hosted Haniyeh and plays a major role in cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas.

A Hamas spokesperson says Haniyeh’s death won’t hinder the group.

“The occupation will not succeed in achieving its goals,” Sami Abu Zuhri told The Associated Press, adding that Hamas emerged stronger after past crises and assassinations of its leaders.

He accused Israel of “spreading chaos and evil” in the region, and called for regional governments to speak out against Israel’s acts.

“More silence means more chaos,” he said.

A senior member of the Taliban in Afghanistan paid tribute to Haniyeh on Wednesday and offered condolences to his family, friends, and Palestinians.

“Although the martyrdom of Haniyeh is a great loss, the bloodlines of such great people draw the path of freedom,” Anas Haqqani said on X.

Anas Haqqani is the brother of acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani .

Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said he hoped Haniyeh’s assassination did not lead to an escalation of violence in the Middle East.

“Let me firstly say that Hamas is a terrorist organization and this individual was central to the activities which occurred on Oct. 7, activities which we have consistently condemned,” Marles told reporters Wednesday.

“That said, we have consistently been advocating for a cease-fire in the Middle East to see an end to the catastrophe which is playing out in the Middle East and we very much support the efforts of President Biden and his administration in bringing about a cease-fire and clearly, in this moment, we are very much advocating, using our voice in the global community to advocate against any escalation in what’s occurring in the Middle East,” Marles added.

Mohammed Dahlan, a former Gaza security chief and Hamas rival, decried the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh as “cowardly assassination.”

Writing on Facebook, he said the killing “won’t happen without an American greenlight to (the Israeli) occupation to continue its crimes and genocidal war against our people and their leaders.”

Dahlan, who is based in the United Arab Emirates, called for unity to “face plans to liquidate the Palestinian cause and impose new facts on the ground.”

Mohamed al-Hindi, a leading member of the Iran-backed Islamic Jihad group, told Al Jazeera TV that the back-to-back killing of Hamas leader and a Hezbollah commander will ignite a wider conflict in the region.

He said the killings are messages from Israel to Hamas and Iran that only bring out wider support from Yemen, Iraq and other resistance movements. Al-Hindi said Haniyeh’s position will be filled very soon.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that even with the events of the past 24 hours, Washington hoped that Israel would be able to come to a diplomatic solution and deescalate the situation.

“I don’t think that war is inevitable,” he told reporters in Manila, Philippines. “I maintain that. I think there’s always room and opportunity for diplomacy, and I’d like to see parties pursue those opportunities.”

He said he didn’t have details about Haniyeh’s killing or the death of a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut.

He added, however, that the United States has for some time been looking at events on Israel’s border with Lebanon with “concern.”

“Again, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure that we keep things from turning into a broader conflict throughout the region.”

Iran’s Fars news agency, close to the Revolutionary Guard, posted on X that Haniyeh was stationed in the north of Tehran, and a projectile from the air killed him around 2:30 a.m. Further investigations are underway and details will be announced later, Fars added.
