Introduction

Before you start your research, check the correct spelling of the person’s name.

While you research, keep in mind that all sources can contain bias; the best biographical information will be signed by an author and will provide bibliographic citations for source material. Research Questions:

  • What do you already know about the person?
  • How much information do you want to find about the person?
  • What is the person's profession or notoriety?
  • How well known is the person?
  • Is the person’s nationality, ethnic background, gender, or affiliation significant?
  • Is the person living or deceased?
  • What dates are significant for this person?
  • Do you want autobiography, memoir, or interviews in addition to biographical sources?

This chapter provides an introduction to the depth and range of Biographical Research. It is clear that Biographical Research is firmly established within the social sciences, becoming part of the ‘mainstream’ in research practice. What is apparent is the increasing extension of interest in forms of ‘personal documents’ and the varied types of ‘interview’ and its analysis being developed. The chapter outlines some areas for creative developments in the field arising from the impact of digital technologies within society. It argues that Biographical Research needs to recognise forms of ‘individual consciousness’ in the experience of ‘everyday life’. By suggesting surrealist and synthaesthetic methodologies the chapter may stimulate new interpretive approaches to understand ‘lives on the move’.

Biographical Research Challenges and Creativity

Description

Studying people’s lives requires acknowledging the multiple entanglements between individual singularity and processes of social patterning. This book testifies how challenging and creative the study of these connections can be. It gathers international contributions that show, in imaginative ways, how a person’s life or specific domains of existence can be observed, tackled, and analysed across time. This volume reveals the potential of biographical research in the production of social theory, in the development of methodological innovation, in giving voice and protagonism to people, and in the understanding of the social unfolding of their lives. It is a testimony of a vibrant and youthful field, with a long tradition in social sciences, and with numerous connections with other study areas, namely the life course approach. The different chapters illustrate how the challenges posed by this type of research focused on the individual level of analysis are particular and what creative responses are required to continue analysing the link between biography and society. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal  Contemporary Social Science .

Other research methodologies are often ...

Abstract. This case study is in process, begun in 2008, in which I am currently collecting data for an authorized biography. 7. Introduction: Reconstructive biographical research

Reconstructive biographical research is a distinct sociological approach to social analysis. 15. Introduction to Biographical Methods

Sociology lecturers are introducing biographical methods in order tackle pedagogical difficulties associated with the increasing marketisation of higher education and the depoliticised attitudes of the students.
