G-NUR-PHD - Nursing - PhD

Degree designation.

The PhD Program in Nursing prepares nurse scholars who will advance nursing science and promote equitable health outcomes and care systems, with a focus on social determinants of health (SDOH). Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to design, implement, and evaluate innovative models of care that improve health outcomes across diverse populations.  Graduates of the program will be prepared to lead and transform nursing practice, policy, and research to promote health equity and social justice. PhD student tuition and 12-month stipends are  fully funded   for up to five years.

At Duke University School of Nursing we admit a small number of highly qualified, diverse applicants that work closely with one or more faculty members in a series of mentored experiences supported by formal coursework.

 A baccalaureate or master’s degree in nursing from a program accredited by ACEN or CCNE is required for admission to the PhD in nursing program.

Transfer of Credits

Policies on transfer of credit are program specific. Details of the transfer process in each program are provided in the Student Handbooks.

ABSN Program: All 58 credit hours of the ABSN curriculum must be taken at Duke or through Duke interinstitutional enrollment; no transfer of coursework will be accepted.

MSN Program: Students enrolled in the MSN Program may be allowed to transfer up to six credit hours of graduate work completed at other institutions, if the student earned a grade of B (3.0 on a 4-point scale) or higher.

DNP Program: The DNP Program allows the transfer of up to six credit hours for graduate courses completed within five years before the start of the DNP program and after the earned master’s degree at other institutions (or Duke schools), provided that the student earned a grade of B (3.0 on a 4-point scale) or higher.

PhD Program: As a program of The Graduate School, the Duke PhD Program in Nursing follows the policy of The Graduate School; consult the Bulletin of the Duke University Graduate School for details.

Job Summary

The Duke Health Infusion Clinical Nurse Specialist (Infusion CNS) collaborates with members of the healthcare team to enhance patient care in the non-oncology ambulatory infusion setting by serving as an expert resource and consultant to nursing staff and providing evidence-based clinical expertise to patients.  They are a clinician, educator, investigator, consultant, role model and leader. They make clinical judgments based upon a synthesis of current research, concepts, principles, theories, and outcomes to solve complex problems. Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Conducts complete and accurate patient assessment
• Synthesizes assessment data, advanced knowledge, and experience, using critical thinking and clinical judgment for clinical problems amenable to CNS intervention.
• Employs evidence-based clinical practice guidelines tailored to the individual

• Graduate of an accredited MSN or DNP Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist program

  License     

• Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with recognition to practice as a Clinical Nurse Specialist

  Certification 

• Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult-Gerontology (AGCNS-BC or ACCNS-AG)
• Note: NPs and PAs are ineligible; this position is for CNS educated/certified individuals only.
• Minimum 3 years of RN clinical experience is required
• Infusion experience preferred.

Rashmi Saincher is First Rural Family Medicine Residency Graduate

Rashmi Saincher, MBBS , is the first graduate of Duke’s Rural Family Medicine Residency Program .  

She attended medical school at St. George’s University in London, and after residency will care for the small town of Lewisville, NC, practicing ambulatory family medicine. 

Saincher helped launch the Rural Family Medicine Residency in 2021.  

“Rashmi’s brilliant clinical acumen, empathetic patient care, and unwavering leadership laid the foundation for our residency’s successful launch,” said Alexa Namba, DO, MPH, Rural Family Medicine Residency program director. “She was a pioneer for our program and has left an indelible impression on the Oxford community. We cannot express how proud and grateful we are for Rashmi and all her contributions to the residency.” 

The program aims to improve access to high-quality primary care and address the health care needs of rural communities across North Carolina. During the three-year residency, residents gain valuable experience caring for patients at Duke Primary Care Oxford, Duke Regional Hospital, and Maria Parham Health in Henderson. These integral partnerships cultivate a mastery of clinical medicine and emphasize the importance of intimate community engagement.

What Degrees are there for Nursing in Russia?

In Russia, apprenticeship is not enough to build a career as a nurse. The basic requirement is to complete a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree course. Full-time Bachelor Degree programs are offered by RUDN University , I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University , and Perm State Medical University .

Currently, none of the Russian universities offer any postgraduate (Masters and Ph.D.) program in nursing.

Cost of studying nursing in Russia

Tuition fees to be paid by international students vary depending on the program they choose. On average, they amount to $3500 – $4300 per academic year.

Living costs also vary depending on the type of dormitory and level of comfort. On average, a student will need up to $300-400 to pay for a room/apartment in a university hostel or dormitory.

Foreign students completing full-time courses in Russia are allowed to work (if they have free time). However, special permission is required to work legally while studying. Exceptions are only made for the students who find a job with the help of university’s International Office.

How to Study Nursing

To be able to study nursing in Russia as an international student, you first need to meet the requirements of the universities.

Since Russian universities offer only bachelor’s nursing programs, no special education is required to apply. However, there is a standard set of documents that all foreign applicants willing to study nursing need to provide. One of the documents required is the education certificate proving the completion of secondary education.

It is better to start gathering all necessary documents beforehand as this process takes time. In case of international students, time is especially valuable because they need to have all documents translated into Russian. Most often, admission offices ask for notarized and/or legalized translations.

The list of other documents necessary for a successful admission includes passport, medical certificate, and Certificate of Recognition. Universities may ask for additional documents as well.

In What Languages Do You Study Nursing in Russia?

Bachelor programs offered by Russian universities are available in the Russian language only. Both RUDN and I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University teach their nursing programs in Russian.

Many graduate programs in the field of medicine are offered in English/French and even Spanish. However, nursing programs are taught only in Russian. Therefore, fluency in Russian is a must. Otherwise, an international student won’t be able to successfully complete the chosen course and graduate.

If prospective international students do not know Russian, they can complete a preparatory course. For example, a course offered by RUDN university . The methods and approaches used by the teachers allow international students to develop fluency in the Russian language in a relatively short period of time (10 months). Upon completing the course, students may pass Russian Language Proficiency Test.
