My Ambition

The ambition of any person’s life usually depends on their choice and interests. I aspire to be a great dancer . I have always had the knack for dancing from an early age. My parents always encouraged me to pursue my passion. Like most of the parents, they never discouraged me because it is not the most sought after career.

Subsequently, I wish to become a good dancer. I do not want the fame of being a dancer; rather I want the acclaim of being a good dancer. As my parents motivated me to pursue my dream, they enrolled me in dance classes. It helped me grow a lot as a dancer and also enhance my skills.

Most importantly, I wish to be a dance because I want to remove the stigma surrounding this career path. I want to set an example that you can do well in life if you’re not a doctor or engineer. Especially in India, where these two ambitions are considered the most valid.

I believe in the power of dance, and how it conveys the message without words. Dance is the language of the soul, and it makes me feel alive when I indulge in it.

Short Essay on Holiday (200 – 250 Words)

Introduction

Ambitions are a necessary thought. Everybody has some or other ambitions in their life. Without ambition, life seems to be without any motive. Ambition gives us the energy to achieve our goal. There can be many obstacles and hindrances in getting our objectives to be fulfilled, but if we have a clear ambition then it is not difficult.

My Ambition in Life

From my childhood, I have the ambition to become a doctor and serve the whole nation and humanity. As I have seen the white dress of the doctors, at first I was fascinated by the same. But I also have a love for their noble work too. I wanted to provide free services to the people who were poor. Secondly, I have seen many of the patients dying because of not having money and facilities. I wanted to work for them. People consider doctors as God figures and this feeling gave me immense respect for this profession.

I never wanted to become a doctor full of greed. The scenario today has been changed a lot, many doctors have changed their aim from serving mankind to money-making. But still, there are doctors who can be a role model for others. From my childhood, I dreamt of becoming a doctor and my ambition did not change, it remained the same.

An ambition gives a proper perspective to our life and thinking. Thus we should have one or the other objectives in our life and also work harder to attain the same.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – My Ambition to Become a Social Worker

Everybody in this world has a desire to become something, attain some of the positions. Some dream of becoming doctors, engineers, scientists, writers, political leaders, and many more. The aspiration to become something is called to be having an ambition.

My Ambition to Become a Social Worker

During my childhood, I dreamt of becoming a doctor and serve my nation. It may sound funny that I am afraid of seeing blood and patients. So I dropped the aim to become a doctor. I have seen many small children begging and working in many of the shops and restaurants.

So I came to a decision to become a social worker. At least I can do something for their betterment. This will provide a sense of satisfaction to me after work. I also have a great love for animals and nature. As animals cannot speak up and express their pain and feelings, therefore I want to make people aware of the same and further teach them to look after them.

I just have the main motive behind becoming a social worker that I could do something for the people and nature. I have seen many of the children working to make their families survive, but they are unaware of the beneficial government schemes. Therefore it is a good deed to make people aware of the same. There are many children in society who are not properly guided and therefore are directed to the wrong path. So if I would work in this field, it will give me immense pleasure.

Working for Nature and Society

The work of a social worker is to work for a social cause. After becoming a social worker I would be able to make people understand the importance of education, by conducting surveys and awareness programme. According to me, we should also care for our surrounding in which we reside.

We should never allow anybody to do activities which may destroy the balance and nature. The animals, plants, and trees along with other organisms have the same right as we do have on this planet. But we could see that we are forgetting our responsibilities towards our nature. As a social worker, I would be working for the upliftment of society as well as nature too.

There must be an ambition in everyone’s life. Life without an aim is meaningless. The objective in life to do or become something drives us with positivity and courage to fulfill the same. One should not waste the precious gift of god i.e. life in vain, instead, make it worth.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – My Ambition in My Life

Life is a mixture of struggle and happiness. Ambitions make our life a sensible and beautiful one. Every one of us dreams to become something or the other in our lives. This is our ambition, which makes us work for the same and achieve it without getting disturbed by the hurdles of life. So we can say ambition is that driving factor which makes us successful in making our dreams comes true.

Significance of having Ambition in Our Life

  • It is their ambition only which makes people reach higher positions.
  • Having an ambition in our life helps in identifying the goal of our lives.
  • Ambition makes our life lively and energetic. If we have some motive then we continuously work in order to get it fulfilled.
  • Ambition inculcates in us the feeling to work hard to accomplish our dreams.
  • Ambition creates a situation for us to achieve our goal at any cost of hard work and firm determination.
  • Boosts the confidence level of an individual, and brings discipline in one’s life.

My Dream to Become a Teacher

The main motive of my life is to impart the knowledge I have gained, to others. As I believe in the fact that knowledge enhances as much it is distributed. I wanted to become a teacher as this will help me a lot in fulfilling my motive. Secondly, I found the teaching profession as one of the noblest professions.

Reasons for Opting to become a Teacher

It creates a lot of opportunities to learn about different aspects. According to my opinion, a teacher is a person in a child’s life, who is guiding the child about right and wrong after parents as first teachers. As a teacher I want students to consider me as their friend so that I may closely get to know about them.

Teachers are provided with an opportunity to get to know different types of children from various societies, thus making them more social. After I become a teacher, I will ensure that children are not only learning the subject matter but also moral values, ethics, and culture. The main thing is that I have seen an image of motivational speakers in me, so I think I will be better at motivating students to understand their aim and work for the same. At the same time, I am trying to inculcate as many features as one could in me, for becoming a successful teacher.

Uncertainty to Ambitions due to Pandemic Situation

There is a lot of uncertainty that has been created during the pandemic situation.

Many people have been fired from their dream job which is a great loss to their carrier and family. Many of the companies have not visited the colleges for placements, thus making students disappointed and concerned for their future. Even numbers of students were deprived of exams due to the critical situation. Therefore it can be stated that pandemic has raised the situation of uncertainty and depression among students and people.

But one must not lose hope and courage as life is filled up with hurdles, and we are the one who has to pave our way.

Risks of becoming Over-Ambitious

  • The over-ambitious attitude is a dangerous one. Every success we get is a step-wise process. Over-ambitious nature accounts for attaining everything in life, but at a faster rate which may prove bad.
  • The person may lose the pleasure of the family and attention too, in fulfilling his ambition only.
  • Life may also become short, as in a race to achieve a lot in less time one may pay less attention to the health requirements.

We all are not born with ambitions; instead, we have to inculcate it among us as we grow up. Ambitions are something that we desire to achieve in our lives, and thus we have to work sincerely with a lot of efforts to accomplish our goals.

Essay My Ambition in English for Class 12

A famous saying “Life without a goal is like a football match without a poll”. In this fast-paced world, directionless efforts are like nails without a purpose, eventually bending and losing their effectiveness. Focusing our energies toward a goal gives life meaning and substance. The progress and prosperity of nations are borne out of the dedication of individuals with high ambitions who dedicate themselves to a cause.

essay on my ambition

Robert Browning said, “Ambition if reached or not, makes life great.” These words by him resonate deeply with the idea that having a purpose, a driving force, shapes the course of our lives. Indeed, Aristotle’s belief that humans are inherently goal-seeking creatures underscores the significance of striving toward aspirations. As the saying goes, “Not failure but low aim is a crime.”

While my ambitions are diverse, my ambition stands out for its unique focus on the betterment of mankind. I do not yearn for power or wealth; my aim is not to be a king but a kingmaker. I firmly believe that the well-being of society can be achieved through education and continuous learning.

“Good teachers know how to bring out the best in”.

my aim in life essay

My ambition revolves around becoming a teacher, an educator of English. It might seem unusual to some, but teaching is a noble and vital profession. It holds the power to shape the future by nurturing the minds that will impact the world. Just as a good mother shapes good children, a teacher Molds a nation. Prophets, saints, and moralists have been teachers, carrying the torch of wisdom through generations.

“A teacher affects eternity.”

The role of a teacher is profound. A teacher builds engineers, doctors, civil servants, and military personnel. The engineers design the grand structures, doctors make health better, civil officers manage administration, and military officers safeguard the nation. Yet, it is the teacher who lays the foundation for these roles. Just as a perfume lingers after heroic deeds, teaching imparts an everlasting fragrance.

Why English, one might ask? English is the universal language, the bridge connecting people from diverse backgrounds. It is the key to accessing knowledge in fields like science, philosophy, history, and commerce. If we aim to create proficient engineers, doctors, administrators, and lawmakers, the study of the English language is paramount.

“A teacher influences those who matter to the world.”

My aim in life essay quotations

To fulfill my ambition, I dedicate myself to mastering the intricacies of the English language and its literature. I recognize that my pursuit might seem unconventional, but I am content with my chosen path. Ambitions are personal, a driving force unique to each individual.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that ambitions are the compasses that guide our careers and life journeys. They are not just dreams but the catalysts for action. My ambition to become an English teacher is driven by my desire to educate and illuminate young minds. Just as Socrates said, “Teaching fame is the perfume of heroic deeds.” Through teaching, I aspire to leave an indelible mark on society, one student at a time.

In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt,  “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Indeed, we only live once, but if we channel our efforts and dreams into our ambitions, once is enough to create a lasting impact on the world.

For instance, a study revealed that 90% of accomplished people had strong ambitions.

Consider the example of Thomas Edison, whose ambition to invent the light bulb led to one of the greatest inventions in history. Experts agree that ambition is a key factor in achieving success. In fact, a survey of successful individuals found that 80% attributed their achievements to ambition.

Fosters Growth

Ambition is not only a personal motivator but also an inspiration to those around us. When others witness our determination and drive, they too are encouraged to set and pursue their own goals. Everyone has some or other kind of ambition in life. Right from childhood, we start dreaming and weaving ambitions. Ambition shows us the direction towards our overarching goal and also helps us focus on our aim. It inculcates the habits of hard work and punctuality as these two traits help us reach our goal. It encourages us to lead a better life.

However, every individual has its own ambition in life. People nowadays give up on their ambitions because of society. For instance, many people in the medical field wanted to become models or singers or some of the greatest officers always wanted to become artists, however, they chose the other profession to adapt to this society.

Well, my ambition in life is to become a dancer as I developed a taste for dancing when I was in class 3. I had great support from my family and they always encourage me to pursue this ambition. I have heard many people who stated that they never got support from their family when they wanted to dance but I feel fortunate enough to have such a family that supports me.

So from the beginning of my childhood, I joined the dance classes to polish my skills and learn new and latest dance forms. My guru was such a great dancer at the national level who taught me various dance skills and encouraged me to perform well every time I participated in the competition. I learnt many things from dance as it is an art that inculcates punctuality and confidence which ultimately makes you a better person in life.

I wanted to become a dancer as I want to set an example for people that even dancing career is lucrative and must not be taken for granted. There are many doctors and engineers in the society but that doesn’t mean these are the only two professions that give you respect in society. Art is something that is respect in itself and dance is a form of art and should never be considered inferior to any other profession.

My Ambition in Life

Essay No. 01

8 Best Essays on ” Ambition of My Life”

My ambition in life is to become a doctor. I want to serve the people, particularly the poor. Only a doctor can truly serve the people of his country.

There are innumerable doctors in India. But only a few would like to go to the village to work for the poor villagers. In villagers, mostly farmers live. They work hard in their fields to grow food for all the people of the country. I would like to treat the poor villagers at nominal charges. I would like to see them grow healthy and strong. If they are physically strong and fit, they can work hard and grow more and more crops in their fields.

The profession of a doctor is good and noble if one does not hanker after riches. Money is not everything in life. Rich people can be persuaded to donate money to set up a small hospital in a village.

Next, I would like to set up a charitable hospital. With the help of donations. Dedicated doctors and nurses would be employed in it. The doctor’s duty is to attend to the ailing and the sick at whatever time of the day it is. A true doctor will not disappoint his patients and be ready to visit them if need be.

The villagers will be given elementary knowledge of how to keep themselves healthy by keeping themselves and their environment clean. I am sure God will help me in my goal. I am quite optimistic (hopeful) about my ambition. I am a present doing well in medical science. I got this inspiration from my father who is a doctor.

Everybody has an ambition in his life. Life without ambition does not lead anywhere. You do not know where to go and what to do. A person with a set of ambitions sets his goals will in advance. He does not lead astray. His eyes are always on his ultimate goal. He cannot be misled by other temptations. He is the master of his luck. He does not believe in destiny. He works very hard. His energy does not go to waste. He goes on and on forcefully. His health does not fail him. Failures do not change his mood to change his track.

Ambition is a great incentive to work. If you have an ambition, you can pursue it all your life and never feel tired. It drives you on and on quite tirelessly. You must decide early in life whether you want to become an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, banker, join Indian Administrative Service, or Indian Foreign Service, join Army, Air Force, or Navy or become a commercial pilot, or a scientist, philosopher, writer or a poet, a musician or an artist. The whole world is open before a young man and he should make up his mind about his career as early as possible.

Essay No. 04

Every person should set ambition because without ambition life would be meaningless. It would be just the passing of time. Ambition makes life challenging and challenges make life interesting. Ambition has been the backbone of every army! Through those great ancient Egyptian wars, through Persia, through Hastings, through Waterloo, through the Native American, greedy colonist battles, through the world wars, through the Balkans, and through every other great conflict that has ever existed each party was blessed by pure and passionate ambition…ambition to win at whatever cost necessary. Surely only the collective force of ambition found in a battle is liable to cause as much suffering and damage as has been caused by all battles that have ever been lost or won? Even the weakest, most injured warrior who persevered has been touched not by insanity, but by raw ambition, and even the most perturbed and exasperated warlord is supported not by his schemes, but by the ambition to realize them. Ambition is the source of all that is good and all that is evil! It makes the wonders and it makes the wars. Ambition is the winner and loser of every game! Every footballer, every chess player, every marathon runner, and every duck-legged Olympic walker smells of fervor, which seeps from the pores of their ambition. When years of dedication pass the baton to ambition, there is a sage to be reckoned with. One only wonders why in spite of the eternal paradoxical query, “What would happen if an irresistible force met with an irresistible force?” Does someone always have to lose? Ambition makes you healthy, wealthy, and wise! Doesn’t it? Observe this immortal quotation from Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or you think you cannot, you are right” The truth he successfully conveys is that we are the scribes of our own destinies. It is an ambition that makes us think we can be successful and a lack of ambition that makes us think we cannot. Ambition and luck are both arch-enemies and best of friends. Ambition is a pain in the neck! It is the finger that sets the alarm for 6 am, the fingers that turn the cold key of the cold car on a cold morning. It compels us to do what we’d really rather put off until tomorrow, it slaps the wrist of apathy. Ambition is the sole witness at the sepulcher of the “unsuccessful at everything”. You see, ambitious tears only fall from a fountain of youth—so they’ll kiss the piled soil, make it wet, and whisper with complacency, “I made you successful at being unsuccessful”. Because ambition never likes to give in.

Essay No. 05

Ambition seems to be an emotion unique to humankind. It is a more advanced form of desire or passion commonly seen in most animals. But unlike other emotions, like love and sorrow, or feelings like hunger and thirst, which create a similar impact on everyone, ambition varies from person to person. Therefore, while food can satisfy everyone’s hunger and companionship, the need for love, no common formula, by which the ambitions of all may be fulfilled alike, is possible.

Ambition is closely related to the lifestyles and priorities of each period. If the common ambition in the past was to become a teacher or a lawyer, it is now an engineer, a medical doctor, a software professional, or a stockbroker that most people wish to be. But even though there is much variety in ambitions, all of them are fueled by a common desire for a respectable and privileged social status, as well as for security and stability in life.

The nature of ambitions changes not only from person to person but from time to time, in the same person. If as a child, our wish was to become a teacher or a pilot, in later life, it may be to become a doctor or an actor. In childhood, since our minds and thoughts are immature, they are unable to help us decide about our future properly.

Nevertheless, we should start preparations to realize our ambitions as early in life as possible. In adolescence, we would have come to know of our abilities and drawbacks well enough to start planning our future. Our attitudes and attributes during that period can indicate with fair accuracy what we shall be in the future. While an aptitude in mathematics and science, and a talent to make simple mechanical devices, may indicate a career in engineering, an interest in living things and the curiosity to know about their constitution may point to the medical profession. Likewise, interest in the fine arts or performing arts may suggest a career in painting or acting, as will a talent for composing poems or story-telling, promise poets and novelists of the future. However, not always will early talent blossom satisfactorily though to sustain itself in the future. Quite often, early promise fizzles out, thereby making an absolute mockery of the ambition based on it. It is, therefore, important to understand, that having ambitions, and realizing them, are entirely different propositions. Talent and ability, by themselves, cannot ensure success. They can lead to success only if they are supported by hard work and optimism.

The key to nurturing talent, and thereby to realizing ambitions, is hard work. Every opportunity that helps develop our potential should be made use of, as should those that will enable us to test our attributes. Realizing ambitions should be a continuing process, which must boldly counter the challenges it may face from time to time. We must be prepared to refine and reform our plans to suit the situations that we face, as we move ahead with time.

Working hard on ambitions should not, however, put us under undue pressure, owing to which we might focus too much on the future, to the disadvantage of the present. We should have a balanced view of the future, to avoid disappointments that may be caused by adverse situations. The future, as such, is unpredictable; and as with many other things in life, our hopes about it may be frustrated. But if we have a suitably flexible and versatile mentality, we can modify our ambitions, should such a need arise.

As ambitions help us acquaint ourselves with our abilities, they add to our personality development. They will fine-tune our talents and make them productive. However, ambitions should be within bounds. They should be reasonable and realistic. There is no point in a blind man’s aspiration to become a pilot. An undesirable aspect of over-ambition is the dependence on improprieties and malpractice. If we are in any way ineligible to pursue our ambition, it is better that we abandon it or choose another that may be suitable, rather than compensate for our ineligibility with malpractice.

Ambitions should always be individually inspired. They should not be influenced by the opinion or compulsions of others. Pressure from others is an important reason for the failure of most ambitions.

Ambition is good or bad according to the way in which it affects others. Our ambitions, while fulfilling our desires, should not act against the interests of society. They should complement the aspirations of society, in a manner that will fetch appreciation and acclaim.

Essay No. 06

Aim gives purpose and direction to life. Without aim, life is like a boat without an oar. Nothing good and great can be achieved without aim. A man without aim becomes a creature of circumstances. He goes astray in life. His life ends in a fiasco. Therefore a man must have some definite goal in life.

If it is essential to have an aim in life. It is equally essential that the aim should be the right one. A wrong aim ruins a man. All his efforts go to waste. His time and energy prove fruitless. A man must set an aim before him right in his early life. The choice of an aim depends on the taste and inclination of a person. However one can seek the advice of wise persons in this matter.

Different people have different aims. Some want to become businessmen. They believe that businessmen have plenty of everything. Their life is one of ease and pleasure. Others want to be doctors or engineers. Such people think that by becoming a doctor or an engineer, they can win name and fame in society. Still, others aspire to become L.A.S. or P.C.S. officers. They want to enjoy power and authority. But I don’t wish to become any of them.

I have decided to become a teacher. A teacher is a nation-builder His job is a missionary job. My aim shall not be to make money. I shall give free coaching to poor students. I shall infuse the spirit of duty and discipline in them. I shall act as their guide, friend, and guardian. I shall set before them high ideals for their guidance. I pray to God to help me to achieve my goal.

Essay No. 07

Ambition always gives life meaning. I do not want to nurture any ambition for personal benefit. I am a part of the huge and diversified society in which many people are poverty-stricken, exploited, and miserable. I want to be committed to them. Hence I aim at becoming a social worker. As a social worker, I will work in distant and remote villages in India where people are illiterate and trapped in religious superstitions. I shall try to present their case to the government. To fight for the cause of the destitute and downtrodden has been my long-cherished dream. I shall make every effort to make them realize that it’s they who create history and not the chosen few or any socio-political power. Besides, I shall inspire my compatriots to join hands with me. I have a strong belief that one day all human beings together can make this world a better place to live in. And it’s always good, to begin with, one’s motherland. I think that only sincerity, determination, and commitment can elevate the present-day world to the heights ‘where the mind is without fear and the head held high’.

What Ambition I Have!

Essay No. 08

My ambition is to be a great painter. My teachers have always appreciated my paintings and encouraged me to paint. I have painted various subjects varying from nature to portraits. My paintings have always found a place in our school exhibitions. My imagination is sharp and my sense of colours is good. This and my vivid imagination have made me a good painter. I have been practicing painting for a long time now and I realize that the more I paint, the better I get it. I know that I can bring a lot of joy to the people who view my paintings. I wish to have my paintings exhibited at various exhibitions and art galleries abroad. A painter creates an imaginary world for himself. I too can create such a world where I can feel comfortable and happy. It is my escape from the mundane reality that I face every day. It will greatly satisfy my aesthetic sensibility to continue to paint. I hope to evolve my own style of painting and set an example for the coming generations of painters. As a painter, I can express my feelings on the canvas. I can project my sensibility about certain subjects I paint. I want to be a painter with a difference. My paintings should bring awards for the country and for myself. I only want to be remembered as a painter who contributed greatly to the world of art and left behind some great works for the world to appreciate and marvel at.

My Ambition in Life

Total Essay – 5

Essay No. 01

Ambition supplies the driving force. It lends meaning to life. A man without an ambition is just like a ship without a rudder, at the mercy of waves, tossing it here and there. A fixed aim or goal in life is very important. Aimless life remains the slave of opportunities. Ambition adds zeal to live. It gives the right direction and makes a man work single-mindedly to attain that goal and to fulfill that ambition. Ambition makes man resourceful and hard-working, sincere and serious. It inculcates a purpose in life. Man strives hard to achieve what he has thought of to be.

Teaching attracts me a lot. It is a noble and respectable profession. I do know that it cannot make me roll in riches, still, I want to be a teacher. A teacher is a torch-bearer, a nation builder, and a servant of mankind.

Need of the hour is devoted teachers to produce men of integrity. I shall give the best of me to my students. I will not be a steam roller that produces oneness and conformity. My students will not be robots. I will leave them to themselves. My work will be to throw a stone in the stagnant water and watch the ripples. Ideas will be mine but to give them proper shape will be the responsibility of the students. So I will try my best to inculcate the habit of independent thinking in my students.

I will teach them not to take things lying down. I will train them to see reason and apply reason. This way I will impart a scientific attitude to my students. I will be a teacher with a missionary zeal. I shall mould the character of students and see that they become ideal citizens. For this, I will try to be their icon in all respects. I shall be a living model of punctuality, discipline, humility, efficiency, and up righteousness.

I shall try to remove ignorance, dogma, and superstition from the students. Modern students are rootless and thoughtless. I shall try to provide them with thoughts as well as roots.

The motto of ‘Simple living and high thinking’ has inculcated in me the ambition to be a teacher. I love young children and by adopting the profession of a teacher I will remain in their company all my life. The noble ideals of the teachers in the .ancient times are before me. In spite of being aware of the difficult and hard life of a teacher, my ambition is to be a teacher. Not an ordinary teacher but a teacher who will leave footprints on the sand of time.

Essay No. 02

Everybody has an ambition in life. Like others, I too have great ambition to reach lofty heights in life.

It is not always easy to make a judicious choice of a profession. It depends upon various factors, namely, personal likes and dislikes long-term planning, academic qualifications, and material resources. It is seen that one often takes to a profession which comes one’s Way without paying any regard to the above factors. Such a person can never attain success in life. It is, therefore, essential to plan and decide carefully before selecting a profession.

As for me, I have given this matter due consideration. I have also examined the relative merits of different professions. I have neither the debating faculty so essential for law nor the strong heart that can stand the dissection of living creatures. Thus, I can neither be a lawyer nor a doctor, engineering has no doubt a bright future in the modem of India but I cannot understand the intricacies of science. Trade and commerce, on the other hand, require a lot of capital. If one fails, one may not have anything to fall back upon. Teaching is, of course, the only profession that finds favour with my taste and temperament.

There are many reasons why I like this profession. A teacher has a sacred duty to perform. It is he on whom rests the responsibility for moulding the characters of young children. Apart from developing intellect, he can inculcate in them qualities of a good citizen– remaining neat and tidy, talking decently, and sitting properly. These virtues are not easy to be imbibed. Only he who himself leads a life of simplicity, purity, and rigid discipline can successfully cultivate these habits in his pupils.

Besides, a teacher always remains young. He may grow old in age but not in spirits. Perpetual contact with budding youth keeps him happy and cheerful. There are moments when domestic worries weigh on his mind but the delightful company of innocent children makes him overcome his transient mood of despair.

Then ‘there is the lively world of books written by masterminds in which he dwells. I am very fond of reading books. This profession will thus help me in satisfying my craving for studies. Whether I shall succeed in achieving my goal, not I cannot say. I know that some of my friends have more laudable ambitions but mine is by no means a low one. It is the highest profession in the world, as the teacher imparts education to the entire world.

Essay No. 03

Everybody dreams. All have dreams of name, fame, and riches in this world.

Some people’s ambition is to be a rich businessmen, while others dream of being doctors, scientists, actors, etc.

In this world, we come across very few people who do not have any desire or ambition in life. Then there are also those who waste their life by choosing the wrong path which ultimately harms society also.

Although I am not an ambitious person, this surely is my goal in life to lead a simple life, to serve humanity in whatever form possible and in whatever I do, must make my parents proud of me.

I have grown up in a middle-class family, and my parents instilled great values in me. In most of the professions, people become corrupt by accepting bribery just to satisfy their greed. My values will never allow me to take bribes.

I would love to become a teacher, because of the simple and down-to-earth way of their life. I have reasons for taking teaching as my life profession because of my fondness for children. I can give them knowledge about different things I can help the little ones in reading and writing. By doing this I would give my country better human beings for tomorrow, and they will be the assets of the country.

If I am able to do these things, then I would think I have achieved my ambition in life.

Essay No. 04

Aim of My Life

Ambition changes into aim when we adopt it with a motive to fulfill. -Bacon

Mahatma Gandhi had the ambition to see his country as free and Independent. Pt. Nehru wanted to see prosperity for India. He had a view of equality for all. He aimed cooperative movement for the prosperity of the Indian masses. Sardar Patel wanted to unite India as a single unit. The ambition was later on adopted as the aim of life and the notable people struggled to fulfill it.

In the same way, George Bush has the ambition to lead the USA to supreme status. He has an aim to make the whole world subordinate to the supreme power, the US. Sometimes these ambitions come up true but they shatter on account of slack efforts. Hence the adoption of desire, ambition, and aim involves the exploration of ways and means to achieve the goal. In the next phase, we are to find ways and means to achieve the aims of life. The exploration leads us to examine the possibilities and put in more sincere efforts.

I too have an aim to become a doctor in life. I have already taken physics, chemistry, and biology in my IX class. I am working very hard to reach my goal. I have a craze for a white coat and stethoscope in the dress of a doctor. I have a deep regard for the efforts they make in helping a sick person. They work hard and render all the best services to the poor sufferer.

A doctor can do a lot of service to the poor and ailing masses. I am pulling in all the efforts to acquire the top rank in class. My teachers are very helpful to me in my mission. They provide motivation, carrier counseling, and all help in explaining the subject. They often encourage to me to seek guidance for odd questions. My parents have already requested some reputed guides to help me in the subject. I have joined some coaching classes and am sure to get better rewards.

I have told my parents that my basic aim to join medical services is to render help to poor and needy persons. I will not hanker after high figure profits and earnings. I may even like to help the needy with whatever I have in my storage. My father has, very kindly, approved my feelings and is encouraging me to work with the best of my efforts. I got very good marks in my last term examinations. Even from my junior classes, the classmates have started appreciating my efforts. They lend me all the help to achieve my aim.

India is full of miseries and diseases. Health and living draw maximum attention for uplift. It will be my privilege to serve the needy for their requirement through this profession.

My Ambition

Essay No. 05

People have dreams in their lives. Many aspire to be rich or to become business tycoons. Some persons dream of becoming leaders, politicians and social reformers. Some aspire to become the leading hooligans and anti-social elements of their localities or cities and this is a bad aspiration. There are others who have a craze for becoming poets, writers and novelists while most of us generally have a desire of becoming engineers, doctors and scientists of great repute. There are very few persons who are happy-go-lucky by nature and have no clear-cut aims in their lives.

I do not have very high aims in my life. I do not wish to become a mill-owner or a multi-millionaire. The some object of my life is to lead a life of simplicity and goodness devoted to the service of humanity. The life of a professional leader or a politician would not suit me as most of such persons have become parasites on the society.

I was born of middle-class parents. From the very beginning, have been passing through the struggles of life. I have seen cut-throat competition in most of the professions. Its consequences have been far-reaching; people are demoralised. Examples can be quoted in which, we can find the engineers accepting big bribes, lawyers rescuing guilty persons or murderers and doctors demanding money from the patients at crucial stages of surgical operation.

Then what do I want to be? Indeed, from the core of my heart, I wish to become a teacher. The motto of this life, ‘simple living and high thinking, inspires me to take up this profession. The noble ideas of the teachers in the ancient times are before me. I am fully aware of the difficult and hard life of a teacher. He leads a life of drudgery, busy in correcting exercise books or answer books of the students. There are no stirring event in his life.

Inspite of these hardships, I would like to become a teacher. I have reasons and considerations for adopting this profession. Since my early childhood, I have the days of developed affection for the young children. In my view, they are delicate and beautiful like the petals of a flower. I feel that as a teacher, I can help the students in widening their outlook by giving them knowledge. I shall help the country by producing better citizens. Moreover, the company of the young children would also help me in remaining young and fresh in thoughts and outlook. Besides rendering all these important services, I shall also have the means of subsistence. I have a great faith in the life of a noble and an ideal teacher because teachers are the custodians of the highest values, according to our former President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.

Essay on My Aim in Life with Outline

  • Ambition is a guiding star in our life.
  • The Choice of the profession is an uphill task for a Youngman.
  • The future profession must be selected keeping in view the taste and talent of the person.
  • The general perception of the civil administration is bad.
  • Objective to join the civil administration.
  • Determination for achievement.

“Hitch your wagon to a star” (Emerson)

Ambition is a guiding star in our life. It inspires us to achieve noble ideals in life. It stimulates our energy, courage and enthusiasm. Without ambition, life becomes dull, drab and boring. Those who have no definite aim in their lives, cannot rise in life.

“Great ambition is the passion of a great character.” (Napoleon)

It is an uphill task for a Youngman to decide about his profession. Many desire to be rich or to become businessmen. Some persons dream of becoming leaders, politicians and social reformers while most of the students aspire to become engineers, doctors, lawyers, military officers and scientists.

“This one step – choosing a goal and

Sticking to it – changes everything.” (Scott Reed)

Everyone has his own dreams but the future profession must be selected keeping in view the taste and talent of the person. Then, what do I want to be? I have decided to become a C.S.P officer because it is according to my taste and temperament. I am active, energetic and daring by nature. I have the ability to express myself impressively. At present, I am a student of intermediate and after my graduation, I shall appear in the Public Service Commission’s Competitive exams for this post.

Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally. (David Frost)

The general perception of the civil administration is, no doubt, bad in our society. There is much corruption and exploitation there. Most of the civil servants accept bribes and demand money from the guilty person. People often condemn them for mismanagement and corruption.

In spite of the bad reputation of the civil administration, I have decided to become a C.S.P officer. I do not want to join it for wealth, powers and pleasure. I have a mission to reform my society. It is suffering from corruption, lawlessness and unrest. I wish to root out all the evils of our society. I have some effective plans to correct society. My job as a C.S.P officer will help me a lot in the achievement of my goal.

“Ingenuity, plus courage, plus work, equals miracles.” (Bob Richards)

My father wanted to see me as a doctor. He had been talking of it since my childhood. But, I did not like the medical profession, because it was not in accordance with my taste temperament. I told my father that I wanted to become a C,.S.P officer. I put up my case with arguments.  So, he allowed me to choose my profession according to my will.

I know that it is not a child’s play to become a C.S.P officer. I shall have to make an extraordinary effort to fulfil my dreams. I am ready to make any sacrifice for it. I am determined to leave no stone unturned to achieve my aim.

“The mould of man’s fortune is in his own hand” (Bacon)

My Aim In Life Essay with Quotes and Outline for Matric, F.A, FSC, BA and BSC

Aim or ambition in life is inevitable. It gives us direction for our efforts to achieve it. It is like the guiding star. If a man is unaware of his destination, his struggle in life will be fruitless.

There can be as many aims or ambitions or dreams as men. Some want to become doctors. Some are ambitious to become Engineers. Some wish to become civil officers. Some are keen to become army officers. Some desire to be writers, novelists, playwrights or poets. Thus ambition or aim varies from person to person.

My aim or ambition or dream of life is to become a Professor of English. There are some reasons for which I want to adopt the profession of teaching at the college level. These are:

Teaching is a very noble profession. The best people in the world are those who teach others. This is the only profession which enables a man to serve his nation properly. A teacher is like a ladder. Like the ladder, the teacher remains at the same place but helps others to rise in life. It is, therefore, better to become a doctor-maker, an engineer-maker or an officer-maker instead of becoming himself a doctor or an engineer or an officer.

It is an acknowledged fact that only men increase the dignity and greatness of a nation. Such men are produced in educational institutions. I am fond of reading, writing and teaching. This profession will assist me to lead the life of a scholar. I am ambitious to become a professor of English because English literature is my favourite subject.

I am taking a deep interest in my studies. Having adopted the profession of teaching, I hope to produce and prepare such men as would be of great service to the nation. Being a teacher, I can also serve my nation by writing such books as can build the character of my people and make them good citizens.

To conclude, aim or ambition or dream of life occupies great importance in human life. A man or a nation cannot make progress in the world in the absence of aim or ambition or dream of life. I am fully satisfied with my aim or ambition or dream of becoming a professor of English as it suits my taste and nature. I am really proud of my aim of becoming a college teacher.

My Aim in Life

An aimless person is just like a ship without any direction. You cannot move forward without having an aim or goal in your life. Everyone has their own aim. Everyone’s aim is different from others. Having a potential goal in life helps you to define your existence. Not only that, but a goal or several goals also help one in understanding their career goals and life goals.

Why Should you have an Aim in Life?

An aimless man can never be successful in his life. All of his goals will either be shattered or fail at a certain point. He limps in his way of life. It is crucial to have a realistic aim or goal in life. It will add a new layer of meaning to your life.

Once you can achieve it, you will be able to find the true purpose of life and set an example for others on how to live life in the best possible way. Not only that but also achieving your goal successfully will bring immense joy and happiness in your life and for your family as well.

How to Choose the Right Aim for You?

Generally, a person chooses their ambition or goal by getting inspired by the people surrounding them. Parents or teachers or relatives play a very crucial role in selecting an aim. Choosing the right goal as per your aptitude will help you to drive your life towards the right path. But one small mistake or choosing a wrong goal can shatter that. Hence everyone must be cautious while making this decision.

Your aim defines your career path. So, it could be really difficult to choose a career path at a very young age, it could be possible that a person fails to reach his goal after a certain point in time. But fixing the mistake and taking the right decision at that moment will show you light in the right direction. Therefore, do not give up hope and keep trying. And, be ambitious.

How to Achieve That?

The first and foremost task is you have to be very careful while making the decision. An aim leads towards the right career. So, here are a few steps that you must remember in every phase of your life.

Always be Proactive

Maintain a healthy and balanced life

Stay away from negativity

Avoid procrastination

Gain more knowledge

Embrace your failures

Get expert opinions

Visualize your final destination

Track your progress

Stay focused

Every person decides at some point what he wants to become. And, in this era of modernization, I am aiming to become a doctor. Not just because my mom is a doctor but also it is a noble profession.

Many people aspire to become an engineer, architects, dancers, interior designers etc. Amid all the other professions, there are some particular reasons behind my preference for becoming a doctor.

A doctor is a person who saves others’ lives by treating them well. He helps people in curing all the diseases by giving them the required medicine or through surgery or various other procedures. Not only curing people by treatment but also a doctor must offer hope and joy to the patient and his family in times of difficulty.

No One would be able to survive in this world if there was no doctor. Nothing could be greater than saving someone’s life and spreading joy in the world.

However, it is not easy to become a doctor. I have to overcome a lot of hurdles to gain success. First I have to study hard and then I have to clear the medical entrance examination to secure a seat in a medical college first and then complete the programme to reach my goal.

I want to be a doctor because I want to help those who cannot afford the cost of treatment of many difficult diseases. I have a goal of opening a hospital of my own that will be equipped with all the modern medical instruments. And those who require treatment but can’t afford the cost of it will be able to get treated in my hospital. I idolize Dr Devi Shetty, the well known cardiac surgeon. Hence I have decided to embark on this journey.

It is a long journey. But I am quite ambitious and I will put in a lot of hard work to fulfill my goal.

Characteristics of a Good Essay

It must be concise: Essays must always be concise. It does not mean that the essay is supposed to be the short one, but it must be of the length required to convey the idea, no more no less. In this instance, the idea of Aim in the life of the student.

It must be clear: Essays are supposed to be clear; it means the main argument or the central idea of the essay must be clear and not vague, and the same goes for each of the sentences of the essay.

For example, in the topic, My Aim in Life, if the student is writing, My aim in life is to become a doctor, then the next sentence must be something that adds meaning to it, such as because I like to help the people, and not something irrelevant, such as, I like singing.

It is very important to be successful in your life. Hence, fixing a goal and staying focused is crucial in your life. So, making a proper plan from a young age and timely execution along with the right attitude are the ultimate keys to success.

Essay on Goal of my Life | My Goal in Life Essay

What is a goal in life.

A definite goal is a foundation of success. Without a goal, our life is like a car without steering. If we decide on an aim in our life it becomes practical and easy to follow that dream or ambition. The main goal of every person in today’s world is to become successful, famous and rich. To achieve these in our life we follow any business or profession; doctor, engineer, teacher, businessman, manager etc.

One’s ambition in life is always inspired by their role models. Role models are people who inspire others to imitate or follow their good behaviour or habits. My goal in life is to become a successful blogger. A blogger is a person who shares his/her knowledge by writing on web pages that exist on the internet.

My Ambition is to become a Blogger

One day I bought a domain name and started writing there. That initial kick to my journey came after reading the motivational writings of popular bloggers. I was clueless about what should I write first. Soon I was writing on my first post titled Holi festival. Because Holi was approaching and was talk of the town. After completing my work, I realised the talent within me. Now, the writing hesitation had vanished.

I started reading more often and always on the lookout for new and hot topics to write on. I registered for some courses available online. I got to learn new concepts about blogging and Digital Marketing with every passing day. When I had published a lot of content on my website, it was time to share it with people. I started searching Google and Youtube for increasing traffic to the website.

To get the recognition, I joined Quora, where I was bombarded with questions. I felt the need of sharing my education and experience with the seekers. I tried to help them with my intelligence and gained their trust.

We get a unique sort of happiness and satisfaction when our writings help others. As my aim in life is now clear in front of my eyes, nothing can stop me from achieving the goal of my life. I hope to keep the hard work going on. My ambition is my dream.

In my journey, I realised that consistency and hard work are essential to success. Learning is a never-ending process which is the key to turn your goals in life into reality.

Ambition Essay: Fling away ambition, by that sin the angels fell. How then can man, the image of his Maker, hope to win by it. -Shakespeare

Long and Short Essays on Ambition and Students in English

Given below are two essays in English for students and children about the topic of ‘Ambition’ in both long and short form. The first essay is a long essay on the Ambition of 400-500 words. This long essay about Ambition is suitable for students of class 7, 8, 9 and 10, and also for competitive exam aspirants. The second essay is a short essay on the Ambition of 150-200 words. These are suitable for students and children in class 6 and below.

Long Essay on Ambition 500 Words in English

Below we have given a long essay on Ambition of 500 words is helpful for classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Competitive Exam Aspirants. This long essay on the topic is suitable for students of class 7 to class 10, and also for competitive exam aspirants.

The word ambition means a strong desire to be successful. The above two quotations clarify that it is up to us to be successful and happy or be defeated and suffering. It is by attempting to reach the top at a single leap that so much misery is caused in the world. The responsibility of proportion or disproportion lies with the pursuer, only he or she is answerable to, of the effect, he or she has been able to produce – It may be hell or heaven. It all depends on whether the pursuer is ruling the ambition, or the ambition has. become his master, that is, who is the slave and who is the slave driver.

Ambition is a call to keep the ambitious person on his right track and go on relentlessly towards the pursuit of his goal. During the pursuit, one has to take care how one achieves one’s aim without making others suffer. If the ambition is not curbed and controlled, it brings only ruin – sooner or later. The history of mankind is full of such examples. If we begin with mythology, the story of two demons Shumbh and Nishumbh, punished by goddess Durga is known to everyone. The example of Hazrat Mansoor is at least known to historians and religious men. He was very proud of his learning and devotion. He used to say ‘Analhaq’, which means ‘I am God’, the ruler of the universe. In the end, he was destroyed by the rage of God. Alexander, the great, wanted to rule the world but could not. Napoleon with the same ambition, conquered many places but in the end had to spend his last days in exile in an isolated island.

Hitler, in his ambition to conquer the world and create a pure Aryan race brought havoc in the world, and murdered millions of Jews in his various concentration camps. What happened in the end? He was defeated by allied forces and was compelled to commit suicide to avoid captures and humiliation.

Today the whole world is in the grip of terror, because of every day incidents of terrorism all over the world. Fanatics and maniacs, in the name of Zehad and Islam are killing innocent children, women and men. The ambition for power and money is the reason. Arson, killings and frequent bomb blasts have become every day’s news.

When ambition is controlled and lead in a positive way, miracles have been achieved in every sphere of life. People have reached the top without trampling and terrorizing others. Such people have given the message of peace, humanity, love, compassion, charity and honesty. They are the hall marks of history, past and present. It does not mean that they had no ambition, but their aim was to reach the goal without trying to dominate or destroy anyone else. Mahatma Gandhi’s ambition was to free his country without using violence and history is the witness of his achievement. Thousands of people benefited by his efforts and India broke her shackles of slavery. Albert Einstein, C.V. Raman, A.P.J. Kalam, the missile man and many other scientists made the world richer by their gifts of inventions.

Yuri Gagarin, the first space traveller, Neil Armstrong, the first man to step on moon, in the real sense of the word fulfilled their ambition and made the world proud of them. Vikram Sarabhai and Yashpal Sharma are the names known to everyone who knows something about space.

Columbus, Vascodigama, Tensigh and others were the pillars of courage and thus they made a name in the world of adventure. Ravindra Nath Tagore the first Noble prize winner of India gave us the message of truth, honesty and courage.

All these people could not have succeeded if they did not have the ambition to reach their goal but they kept their head. They were not misled by the devilish attraction of power and wealth and the evil desire to rise while pushing others down.

Ambition Essay

Short Essay on Ambition 200 Words in English

Below we have given a short essay on Ambition is for Classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. This short essay on the topic is suitable for students of class 6 and below.

When ambition is led by greed of power and wealth, selfishness hatred and pride, it is destructive to both the pursuer and his fellow human beings. When it is lead by noble virtues of truth honesty, compassion and humanity it has the power to generate miracles and naturally mankind has benefited from them.

Ambition is not a weakness unless it is disproportioned to the capacity. Ambition is so powerful a passion, that however high we reach we are never satisfied and this very dissatisfaction if moulded and proportioned in a proper way, enables the pursuer to attain new heights and to have love and respect from his fellow beings.

Students will practice writing in an informed and persuasive manner, in language that engages and enlivens readers by using vivid verbs and avoiding unnecessary passives, nominalizations, and expletive constructions.

Students will prepare writing assignments based on readings and discussions of essays included in Literature and the Environment and other sources. They will use The St. Martin’s Handbook to review grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and usage as needed.

Required Text: Literature and the Environment: A Reader On Nature and Culture. 2nd ed., edited by Lorraine Anderson, Scott Slovic, and John P. O’Grady.

LING 203.S01 English Grammar

TuTh 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Dr. Nathan Serfling

The South Dakota State University 2023-2024 Undergraduate Catalog describes LING 203 as consisting of “[i]nstruction in the theory and practice of traditional grammar including the study of parts of speech, parsing, and practical problems in usage.”

“Grammar” is a mercurial term, though. Typically, we think of it to mean “correct” sentence structure, and, indeed, that is one of its meanings. But Merriam-Webster reminds us “grammar” also refers to “the principles or rules of an art, science, or technique,” taking it beyond the confines of syntactic structures. Grammar also evolves in practice through application (and social, historical, economic changes, among others). Furthermore, grammar evolves as a concept as scholars and educators in the various fields of English studies debate the definition and nature of grammar, including how well its explicit instruction improves students’ writing. In this course, we will use the differing sensibilities, definitions, and fluctuations regarding grammar to guide our work. We will examine the parts of speech, address syntactic structures and functions, and parse and diagram sentences. We will also explore definitions of and debates about grammar. All of this will occur in units about the rules and structures of grammar; the application of grammar rhetorically and stylistically; and the debates surrounding various aspects of grammar, including, but not limited to, its instruction.

ENGL 210 Introduction to Literature

Jodi andrews.

This course serves as a chronological survey of the second half of British literature. Students will read a variety of texts from the Romantic period, the Victorian period, and the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, placing these texts within their historical and literary contexts and identifying the major characteristics of the literary periods and movements that produced them.

ENGL 240.ST1 Juvenile Literature

A survey of the history of literature written for children and adolescents, and a consideration of the various types of juvenile literature.

ENGL 240.ST1 Juvenile Literature: 5-12 Grade

In English 240 students will develop the skills to interpret and evaluate various genres of literature for juvenile readers. This particular section will focus on various works of literature at approximately the 5th-12th grade level.

Readings for this course include works such as Night, Brown Girl Dreaming, All American Boys, Esperanza Rising, Anne Frank’s Diary: A Graphic Adaptation, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, The Hobbit, Little Women, and Lord of the Flies . These readings will be paired with chapters from Reading Children’s Literature: A Critical Introduction to help develop understanding of various genres, themes, and concepts that are both related to juvenile literature, and also present in our readings.

In addition to exploring various genres of writing (poetry, non-fiction, fantasy, historical, non-fiction, graphic novels, etc.) this course will also allow students to engage in a discussion of larger themes present in these works such as censorship, race, rebellion and dissent, power and oppression, gender, knowledge, and the power of language and the written word. Students’ understanding of these works and concepts will be developed through readings, discussion posts, quizzes and exams.

ENGL 240.ST2 Juvenile Literature Elementary-5th Grade

April myrick.

A survey of the history of literature written for children and adolescents, and a consideration of the various genres of juvenile literature. Text selection will focus on the themes of imagination and breaking boundaries.

ENGL 242.S01 American Literature II

TuTh 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Dr. Paul Baggett

This course surveys a range of U.S. literatures from about 1865 to the present, writings that treat the end of slavery and the development of a segregated America, increasingly urbanized and industrialized U.S. landscapes, waves of immigration, and the fulfilled promise of “America” as imperial nation. The class will explore the diversity of identities represented during that time, and the problems/potentials writers imagined in response to the century’s changes—especially literature’s critical power in a time of nation-building. Required texts for the course are The Norton Anthology of American Literature: 1865 to the Present and Toni Morrison’s A Mercy.

WMST 247.S01: Introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies

As an introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality studies, this course considers the experiences of women and provides an overview of the history of feminist thought and activism, particularly within the United States. Students will also consider the concepts of gender and sexuality more broadly to encompass a diversity of gender identifications and sexualities and will explore the degree to which mainstream feminism has—and has not—accommodated this diversity. The course will focus in particular on the ways in which gender and sexuality intersect with race, class, ethnicity, and disability. Topics and concepts covered will include: movements for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights; gender, sexuality and the body; intersectionality; rape culture; domestic and gender violence; reproductive rights; Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW); and more.

ENGL 283.S01 Introduction to Creative Writing

MWF 1-1:50 p.m.

Prof. Steven Wingate

Students will explore the various forms of creative writing (fiction, nonfiction and poetry) not one at a time in a survey format—as if there were decisive walls of separation between then—but as intensely related genres that share much of their creative DNA. Through close reading and work on personal texts, students will address the decisions that writers in any genre must face on voice, rhetorical position, relationship to audience, etc. Students will produce and revise portfolios of original creative work developed from prompts and research. This course fulfills the same SGR #2 requirements ENGL 201; note that the course will involve creative research projects. Successful completion of ENGL 101 (including by test or dual credit) is a prerequisite.

English 284: Introduction to Criticism

This course introduces students to selected traditions of literary and cultural theory and to some of the key issues that animate discussion among literary scholars today. These include questions about the production of cultural value, about ideology and hegemony, about the patriarchal and colonial bases of Western culture, and about the status of the cultural object, of the cultural critic, and of cultural theory itself.

To address these and other questions, we will survey the history of literary theory and criticism (a history spanning 2500 years) by focusing upon a number of key periods and -isms: Greek and Roman Classicism, The Middle Ages and Renaissance, The Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, Formalism, Historicism, Political Criticism (Marxism, Post-Colonialism, Feminism, et al.), and Psychological Criticism. We also will “test” various theories we discuss by examining how well they account for and help us to understand various works of poetry and fiction.

  • 300-400 level

ENGL 330.S01 Shakespeare

TuTh 8-9:15 a.m.

Dr. Michael S. Nagy

This course will focus on William Shakespeare’s poetic and dramatic works and on the cultural and social contexts in which he wrote them. In this way, we will gain a greater appreciation of the fact that literature does not exist in a vacuum, for it both reflects and influences contemporary and subsequent cultures. Text: The Riverside Shakespeare: Complete Works. Ed. Evans, G. Blakemore and J. J. M. Tobin. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1997.

ENGL 363 Science Fiction

MWF 11-11:50 a.m.

This course explores one of the most significant literary genres of the past century in fiction and in film. We will focus in particular on the relationship between science fiction works and technological and social developments, with considerable attention paid to the role of artificial intelligence in the human imagination. Why does science fiction seem to predict the future? What do readers and writers of the genre hope to find in it? Through readings and viewings of original work, as well as selected criticism in the field, we will address these and other questions. Our reading and viewing selections will include such artists as Ursula K. LeGuin, Octavia Butler, Stanley Kubrick and Phillip K. Dick. Students will also have ample opportunity to introduce the rest of the class to their own favorite science fiction works.

ENGL 383.S01 Creative Writing I

MWF 2-2:50 p.m.

Amber Jensen

Creative Writing I encourages students to strengthen poetry, creative nonfiction, and/or fiction writing skills through sustained focus on creative projects throughout the course (for example, collections of shorter works focused on a particular form/style/theme, longer prose pieces, hybrid works, etc.). Students will engage in small- and large-group writing workshops as well as individual conferences with the instructor throughout the course to develop a portfolio of creative work. The class allows students to explore multiple genres through the processes of writing and revising their own creative texts and through writing workshop, emphasizing the application of craft concepts across genre, but also allows students to choose one genre of emphasis, which they will explore through analysis of self-select texts, which they will use to deepen their understanding of the genre and to contextualize their own creative work.

ENGL 475.S01 Creative Nonfiction

Mondays 3-5:50 p.m.

In this course, students will explore the expansive and exciting genre of creative nonfiction, including a variety of forms such as personal essay, braided essay, flash nonfiction, hermit crab essays, profiles and more. Through rhetorical reading, discussion, and workshop, students will engage published works, their own writing process, and peer work as they expand their understanding of the possibilities presented in this genre and the craft elements that can be used to shape readers’ experience of a text. Students will compile a portfolio of polished work that demonstrates their engagement with course concepts and the writing process.

ENGL 485.S01 Writing Center Tutoring

MW 8:30-9:45 a.m.

Since their beginnings in the 1920s and 30s, writing centers have come to serve numerous functions: as hubs for writing across the curriculum initiatives, sites to develop and deliver workshops, and resource centers for faculty as well as students, among other functions. But the primary function of writing centers has necessarily and rightfully remained the tutoring of student writers. This course will immerse you in that function in two parts. During the first four weeks, you will explore writing center praxis—that is, the dialogic interplay of theory and practice related to writing center work. This part of the course will orient you to writing center history, key theoretical tenets and practical aspects of writing center tutoring. Once we have developed and practiced this foundation, you will begin work in the writing center as a tutor, responsible for assisting a wide variety of student clients with numerous writing tasks. Through this work, you will learn to actively engage with student clients in the revision of a text, respond to different student needs and abilities, work with a variety of writing tasks and rhetorical situations and develop a richer sense of writing as a complex and negotiated social process.

ENGL 492.S01 The Vietnam War in Literature and Film

Tuesdays 3-5:50 p.m.

Dr. Jason McEntee

In 1975, the United States officially included its involvement in the Vietnam War, thus marking 2025 as the 50th anniversary of the conclusion (in name only) of one of the most chaotic, confusing, and complex periods in American history. In this course, we will consider how literature and film attempt to chronicle the Vietnam War and, perhaps more important, its aftermath. I have designed this course for those looking to extend their understanding of literature and film to include the ideas of art, experience, commercial products, and cultural documents. Learning how to interpret literature and movies remains the highest priority of the course, including, for movies, the study of such things as genre, mise-en-scene (camera movement, lighting, etc.), editing, sound and so forth.

We will read Dispatches , A Rumor of War , The Things They Carried , A Piece of My Heart , and Bloods , among others. Some of the movies that we will screen are: Apocalypse Now (the original version), Full Metal Jacket , Platoon , Coming Home , Born on the Fourth of July , Dead Presidents , and Hearts and Minds . Because we must do so, we will also look at some of the more fascinatingly outrageous yet culturally significant fantasies about the war, such as The Green Berets and Rambo: First Blood, Part II .

ENGL 492.S02 Classical Mythology

TuTh 3:30-4:45 p.m.

Drs. Michael S. Nagy and Graham Wrightson

Modern society’s fascination with mythology manifests itself in the continued success of novels, films and television programs about mythological or quasi-mythological characters such as Hercules, the Fisher King, and Gandalf the Grey, all of whom are celebrated for their perseverance or their daring deeds in the face of adversity. This preoccupation with mythological figures necessarily extends back to the cultures which first propagated these myths in early folk tales and poems about such figures as Oðin, King Arthur, Rhiannon, Gilgamesh, and Odysseus, to name just a few. English 492, a reading-intensive course cross-listed with History 492, primarily aims to expose students to the rich tradition of mythological literature written in languages as varied as French, Gaelic, Welsh, Old Icelandic, Greek, and Sumerian; to explore the historical, social, political, religious, and literary contexts in which these works flourished (if indeed they did); and to grapple with the deceptively simple question of what makes these myths continue to resonate with modern audiences. Likely topics and themes of this course will include: Theories of myth; Mythological Beginnings: Creation myths and the fall of man; Male and Female Gods in Myth; Foundation myths; Nature Myths; The Heroic Personality; the mythological portrayal of (evil/disruptive) women in myth; and Monsters in myth.

Likely Texts:

  • Dalley, Stephanie, trans. Myths from Mesopotamia: Creation, the Flood, Gilgamesh, and Others. Oxford World’s Classics, 2009
