Since elementary school, I have always favored subjects like science and math over the humanities. To talk ethics, we looked at dilemmas we had faced ourselves. By the end of class, I’d discovered that questions with no right answer can turn out to be the most interesting ones.

The experience has taught me to look at things a little more “philosophically”—and not just because it was a philosophy class! I learned that if I let go of my preconceptions, I can actually get a lot out of subjects I was previously dismissive of. The class taught me—in more ways than one—to look at things with an open mind.

A narrative essay is one of the most intimidating assignments you can be handed at any level of your education. Where you've previously written argumentative essays that make a point or analytic essays that dissect meaning, a narrative essay asks you to write what is effectively a story .

But unlike a simple work of creative fiction, your narrative essay must have a clear and concrete motif —a recurring theme or idea that you’ll explore throughout. Narrative essays are less rigid, more creative in expression, and therefore pretty different from most other essays you’ll be writing.

But not to fear—in this article, we’ll be covering what a narrative essay is, how to write a good one, and also analyzing some personal narrative essay examples to show you what a great one looks like.

What Is a Narrative Essay?

At first glance, a narrative essay might sound like you’re just writing a story. Like the stories you're used to reading, a narrative essay is generally (but not always) chronological, following a clear throughline from beginning to end. Even if the story jumps around in time, all the details will come back to one specific theme, demonstrated through your choice in motifs.

Unlike many creative stories, however, your narrative essay should be based in fact. That doesn’t mean that every detail needs to be pure and untainted by imagination, but rather that you shouldn’t wholly invent the events of your narrative essay. There’s nothing wrong with inventing a person’s words if you can’t remember them exactly, but you shouldn’t say they said something they weren’t even close to saying.

Another big difference between narrative essays and creative fiction—as well as other kinds of essays—is that narrative essays are based on motifs. A motif is a dominant idea or theme, one that you establish before writing the essay. As you’re crafting the narrative, it’ll feed back into your motif to create a comprehensive picture of whatever that motif is.

For example, say you want to write a narrative essay about how your first day in high school helped you establish your identity. You might discuss events like trying to figure out where to sit in the cafeteria, having to describe yourself in five words as an icebreaker in your math class, or being unsure what to do during your lunch break because it’s no longer acceptable to go outside and play during lunch. All of those ideas feed back into the central motif of establishing your identity.

The important thing to remember is that while a narrative essay is typically told chronologically and intended to read like a story, it is not purely for entertainment value. A narrative essay delivers its theme by deliberately weaving the motifs through the events, scenes, and details. While a narrative essay may be entertaining, its primary purpose is to tell a complete story based on a central meaning.

Unlike other essay forms, it is totally okay—even expected—to use first-person narration in narrative essays. If you’re writing a story about yourself, it’s natural to refer to yourself within the essay. It’s also okay to use other perspectives, such as third- or even second-person, but that should only be done if it better serves your motif. Generally speaking, your narrative essay should be in first-person perspective.

Though your motif choices may feel at times like you’re making a point the way you would in an argumentative essay, a narrative essay’s goal is to tell a story, not convince the reader of anything. Your reader should be able to tell what your motif is from reading, but you don’t have to change their mind about anything. If they don’t understand the point you are making, you should consider strengthening the delivery of the events and descriptions that support your motif.

Narrative essays also share some features with analytical essays, in which you derive meaning from a book, film, or other media. But narrative essays work differently—you’re not trying to draw meaning from an existing text, but rather using an event you’ve experienced to convey meaning. In an analytical essay, you examine narrative, whereas in a narrative essay you create narrative.

The structure of a narrative essay is also a bit different than other essays. You’ll generally be getting your point across chronologically as opposed to grouping together specific arguments in paragraphs or sections. To return to the example of an essay discussing your first day of high school and how it impacted the shaping of your identity, it would be weird to put the events out of order, even if not knowing what to do after lunch feels like a stronger idea than choosing where to sit. Instead of organizing to deliver your information based on maximum impact, you’ll be telling your story as it happened, using concrete details to reinforce your theme.

3 Great Narrative Essay Examples

One of the best ways to learn how to write a narrative essay is to look at a great narrative essay sample. Let’s take a look at some truly stellar narrative essay examples and dive into what exactly makes them work so well.

A Ticket to the Fair by David Foster Wallace

Today is Press Day at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, and I’m supposed to be at the fairgrounds by 9:00 A.M. to get my credentials. I imagine credentials to be a small white card in the band of a fedora. I’ve never been considered press before. My real interest in credentials is getting into rides and shows for free. I’m fresh in from the East Coast, for an East Coast magazine. Why exactly they’re interested in the Illinois State Fair remains unclear to me. I suspect that every so often editors at East Coast magazines slap their foreheads and remember that about 90 percent of the United States lies between the coasts, and figure they’ll engage somebody to do pith-helmeted anthropological reporting on something rural and heartlandish. I think they asked me to do this because I grew up here, just a couple hours’ drive from downstate Springfield. I never did go to the state fair, though—I pretty much topped out at the county fair level. Actually, I haven’t been back to Illinois for a long time, and I can’t say I’ve missed it.

Throughout this essay, David Foster Wallace recounts his experience as press at the Illinois State Fair. But it’s clear from this opening that he’s not just reporting on the events exactly as they happened—though that’s also true— but rather making a point about how the East Coast, where he lives and works, thinks about the Midwest.

In his opening paragraph, Wallace states that outright: “Why exactly they’re interested in the Illinois State Fair remains unclear to me. I suspect that every so often editors at East Coast magazines slap their foreheads and remember that about 90 percent of the United States lies between the coasts, and figure they’ll engage somebody to do pith-helmeted anthropological reporting on something rural and heartlandish.”

Not every motif needs to be stated this clearly , but in an essay as long as Wallace’s, particularly since the audience for such a piece may feel similarly and forget that such a large portion of the country exists, it’s important to make that point clear.

But Wallace doesn’t just rest on introducing his motif and telling the events exactly as they occurred from there. It’s clear that he selects events that remind us of that idea of East Coast cynicism , such as when he realizes that the Help Me Grow tent is standing on top of fake grass that is killing the real grass beneath, when he realizes the hypocrisy of craving a corn dog when faced with a real, suffering pig, when he’s upset for his friend even though he’s not the one being sexually harassed, and when he witnesses another East Coast person doing something he wouldn’t dare to do.

Wallace is literally telling the audience exactly what happened, complete with dates and timestamps for when each event occurred. But he’s also choosing those events with a purpose—he doesn’t focus on details that don’t serve his motif. That’s why he discusses the experiences of people, how the smells are unappealing to him, and how all the people he meets, in cowboy hats, overalls, or “black spandex that looks like cheesecake leotards,” feel almost alien to him.

All of these details feed back into the throughline of East Coast thinking that Wallace introduces in the first paragraph. He also refers back to it in the essay’s final paragraph, stating:

At last, an overarching theory blooms inside my head: megalopolitan East Coasters’ summer treats and breaks and literally ‘getaways,’ flights-from—from crowds, noise, heat, dirt, the stress of too many sensory choices….The East Coast existential treat is escape from confines and stimuli—quiet, rustic vistas that hold still, turn inward, turn away. Not so in the rural Midwest. Here you’re pretty much away all the time….Something in a Midwesterner sort of actuates , deep down, at a public event….The real spectacle that draws us here is us.

Throughout this journey, Wallace has tried to demonstrate how the East Coast thinks about the Midwest, ultimately concluding that they are captivated by the Midwest’s less stimuli-filled life, but that the real reason they are interested in events like the Illinois State Fair is that they are, in some ways, a means of looking at the East Coast in a new, estranging way.

The reason this works so well is that Wallace has carefully chosen his examples, outlined his motif and themes in the first paragraph, and eventually circled back to the original motif with a clearer understanding of his original point.

When outlining your own narrative essay, try to do the same. Start with a theme, build upon it with examples, and return to it in the end with an even deeper understanding of the original issue. You don’t need this much space to explore a theme, either—as we’ll see in the next example, a strong narrative essay can also be very short.

Death of a Moth by Virginia Woolf

After a time, tired by his dancing apparently, he settled on the window ledge in the sun, and, the queer spectacle being at an end, I forgot about him. Then, looking up, my eye was caught by him. He was trying to resume his dancing, but seemed either so stiff or so awkward that he could only flutter to the bottom of the window-pane; and when he tried to fly across it he failed. Being intent on other matters I watched these futile attempts for a time without thinking, unconsciously waiting for him to resume his flight, as one waits for a machine, that has stopped momentarily, to start again without considering the reason of its failure. After perhaps a seventh attempt he slipped from the wooden ledge and fell, fluttering his wings, on to his back on the window sill. The helplessness of his attitude roused me. It flashed upon me that he was in difficulties; he could no longer raise himself; his legs struggled vainly. But, as I stretched out a pencil, meaning to help him to right himself, it came over me that the failure and awkwardness were the approach of death. I laid the pencil down again.

In this essay, Virginia Woolf explains her encounter with a dying moth. On surface level, this essay is just a recounting of an afternoon in which she watched a moth die—it’s even established in the title. But there’s more to it than that. Though Woolf does not begin her essay with as clear a motif as Wallace, it’s not hard to pick out the evidence she uses to support her point, which is that the experience of this moth is also the human experience.

In the title, Woolf tells us this essay is about death. But in the first paragraph, she seems to mostly be discussing life—the moth is “content with life,” people are working in the fields, and birds are flying. However, she mentions that it is mid-September and that the fields were being plowed. It’s autumn and it’s time for the harvest; the time of year in which many things die.

In this short essay, she chronicles the experience of watching a moth seemingly embody life, then die. Though this essay is literally about a moth, it’s also about a whole lot more than that. After all, moths aren’t the only things that die—Woolf is also reflecting on her own mortality, as well as the mortality of everything around her.

At its core, the essay discusses the push and pull of life and death, not in a way that’s necessarily sad, but in a way that is accepting of both. Woolf begins by setting up the transitional fall season, often associated with things coming to an end, and raises the ideas of pleasure, vitality, and pity.

At one point, Woolf tries to help the dying moth, but reconsiders, as it would interfere with the natural order of the world. The moth’s death is part of the natural order of the world, just like fall, just like her own eventual death.

All these themes are set up in the beginning and explored throughout the essay’s narrative. Though Woolf doesn’t directly state her theme, she reinforces it by choosing a small, isolated event—watching a moth die—and illustrating her point through details.

With this essay, we can see that you don’t need a big, weird, exciting event to discuss an important meaning. Woolf is able to explore complicated ideas in a short essay by being deliberate about what details she includes, just as you can be in your own essays.

Notes of a Native Son by James Baldwin

On the twenty-ninth of July, in 1943, my father died. On the same day, a few hours later, his last child was born. Over a month before this, while all our energies were concentrated in waiting for these events, there had been, in Detroit, one of the bloodiest race riots of the century. A few hours after my father’s funeral, while he lay in state in the undertaker’s chapel, a race riot broke out in Harlem. On the morning of the third of August, we drove my father to the graveyard through a wilderness of smashed plate glass.

Like Woolf, Baldwin does not lay out his themes in concrete terms—unlike Wallace, there’s no clear sentence that explains what he’ll be talking about. However, you can see the motifs quite clearly: death, fatherhood, struggle, and race.

Throughout the narrative essay, Baldwin discusses the circumstances of his father’s death, including his complicated relationship with his father. By introducing those motifs in the first paragraph, the reader understands that everything discussed in the essay will come back to those core ideas. When Baldwin talks about his experience with a white teacher taking an interest in him and his father’s resistance to that, he is also talking about race and his father’s death. When he talks about his father’s death, he is also talking about his views on race. When he talks about his encounters with segregation and racism, he is talking, in part, about his father.

Because his father was a hard, uncompromising man, Baldwin struggles to reconcile the knowledge that his father was right about many things with his desire to not let that hardness consume him, as well.

Baldwin doesn’t explicitly state any of this, but his writing so often touches on the same motifs that it becomes clear he wants us to think about all these ideas in conversation with one another.

At the end of the essay, Baldwin makes it more clear:

This fight begins, however, in the heart and it had now been laid to my charge to keep my own heart free of hatred and despair. This intimation made my heart heavy and, now that my father was irrecoverable, I wished that he had been beside me so that I could have searched his face for the answers which only the future would give me now.

Here, Baldwin ties together the themes and motifs into one clear statement: that he must continue to fight and recognize injustice, especially racial injustice, just as his father did. But unlike his father, he must do it beginning with himself—he must not let himself be closed off to the world as his father was. In this essay, Baldwin loads the front of the essay with his motifs, and, through his narrative, weaves them together into a theme. In the end, he comes to a conclusion that connects all of those things together and leaves the reader with a lasting impression of completion—though the elements may have been initially disparate, in the end everything makes sense.

You can replicate this tactic of introducing seemingly unattached ideas and weaving them together in your own essays. By introducing those motifs, developing them throughout, and bringing them together in the end, you can demonstrate to your reader how all of them are related. However, it’s especially important to be sure that your motifs and clear and consistent throughout your essay so that the conclusion feels earned and consistent—if not, readers may feel mislead.

5 Key Tips for Writing Narrative Essays

Narrative essays can be a lot of fun to write since they’re so heavily based on creativity. But that can also feel intimidating—sometimes it’s easier to have strict guidelines than to have to make it all up yourself. Here are a few tips to keep your narrative essay feeling strong and fresh.

Develop Strong Motifs

Motifs are the foundation of a narrative essay . What are you trying to say? How can you say that using specific symbols or events? Those are your motifs.

In the same way that an argumentative essay’s body should support its thesis, the body of your narrative essay should include motifs that support your theme.

Try to avoid cliches, as these will feel tired to your readers. Instead of roses to symbolize love, try succulents. Instead of the ocean representing some vast, unknowable truth, try the depths of your brother’s bedroom. Keep your language and motifs fresh and your essay will be even stronger!

Use First-Person Perspective

In many essays, you’re expected to remove yourself so that your points stand on their own. Not so in a narrative essay—in this case, you want to make use of your own perspective.

Sometimes a different perspective can make your point even stronger. If you want someone to identify with your point of view, it may be tempting to choose a second-person perspective. However, be sure you really understand the function of second-person; it’s very easy to put a reader off if the narration isn’t expertly deployed.

If you want a little bit of distance, third-person perspective may be okay. But be careful—too much distance and your reader may feel like the narrative lacks truth.

That’s why first-person perspective is the standard. It keeps you, the writer, close to the narrative, reminding the reader that it really happened. And because you really know what happened and how, you’re free to inject your own opinion into the story without it detracting from your point, as it would in a different type of essay.

Stick to the Truth

Your essay should be true. However, this is a creative essay, and it’s okay to embellish a little. Rarely in life do we experience anything with a clear, concrete meaning the way somebody in a book might. If you flub the details a little, it’s okay—just don’t make them up entirely.

Also, nobody expects you to perfectly recall details that may have happened years ago. You may have to reconstruct dialog from your memory and your imagination. That’s okay, again, as long as you aren’t making it up entirely and assigning made-up statements to somebody.

Dialog is a powerful tool. A good conversation can add flavor and interest to a story, as we saw demonstrated in David Foster Wallace’s essay. As previously mentioned, it’s okay to flub it a little, especially because you’re likely writing about an experience you had without knowing that you’d be writing about it later.

However, don’t rely too much on it. Your narrative essay shouldn’t be told through people explaining things to one another; the motif comes through in the details. Dialog can be one of those details, but it shouldn’t be the only one.

Use Sensory Descriptions

Because a narrative essay is a story, you can use sensory details to make your writing more interesting. If you’re describing a particular experience, you can go into detail about things like taste, smell, and hearing in a way that you probably wouldn’t do in any other essay style.

These details can tie into your overall motifs and further your point. Woolf describes in great detail what she sees while watching the moth, giving us the sense that we, too, are watching the moth. In Wallace’s essay, he discusses the sights, sounds, and smells of the Illinois State Fair to help emphasize his point about its strangeness. And in Baldwin’s essay, he describes shattered glass as a “wilderness,” and uses the feelings of his body to describe his mental state.

All these descriptions anchor us not only in the story, but in the motifs and themes as well. One of the tools of a writer is making the reader feel as you felt, and sensory details help you achieve that.

What is a narrative essay?

When writing a narrative essay, one might think of it as telling a story. These essays are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal—allowing students to express themselves in a creative and, quite often, moving ways.

Here are some guidelines for writing a narrative essay.

  • If written as a story, the essay should include all the parts of a story.

This means that you must include an introduction, plot, characters, setting, climax, and conclusion.

  • When would a narrative essay not be written as a story?

A good example of this is when an instructor asks a student to write a book report. Obviously, this would not necessarily follow the pattern of a story and would focus on providing an informative narrative for the reader.

  • The essay should have a purpose.

Make a point! Think of this as the thesis of your story. If there is no point to what you are narrating, why narrate it at all?

  • The essay should be written from a clear point of view.

It is quite common for narrative essays to be written from the standpoint of the author; however, this is not the sole perspective to be considered. Creativity in narrative essays oftentimes manifests itself in the form of authorial perspective.

  • Use clear and concise language throughout the essay.

Much like the descriptive essay, narrative essays are effective when the language is carefully, particularly, and artfully chosen. Use specific language to evoke specific emotions and senses in the reader.

  • The use of the first person pronoun ‘I’ is welcomed.

Do not abuse this guideline! Though it is welcomed it is not necessary—nor should it be overused for lack of clearer diction.

  • As always, be organized!

Your story should reach a climax where tension is highest. This will be the turning point that leads to a resolution. For example, moving outside of your comfort zone was difficult and scary. Alternately, your narrative essay might focus on an imagined experience (for example, how your life would be if you had been born into different circumstances). While you don’t need to present a thesis statement or scholarly evidence, a narrative essay still needs to be well-structured and clearly organized so that the reader can follow your story.

When you might be asked to write a narrative essay

Although less popular than argumentative essays or expository essays, narrative essays are relatively common in high school and college writing classes.

The same techniques that you would use to write a college essay as part of a college or scholarship application are applicable to narrative essays, as well. In fact, the Common App that many students use to apply to multiple colleges asks you to submit a narrative essay.

How to choose a topic for a narrative essay

When you are asked to write a narrative essay, a topic may be assigned to you or you may be able to choose your own. With an assigned topic, the prompt will likely fall into one of two categories: specific or open-ended.

Examples of specific prompts:

  • Write about the last vacation you took.
  • Write about your final year of middle school.

Examples of open-ended prompts:

  • Write about a time when you felt all hope was lost.
  • Write about a brief, seemingly insignificant event that ended up having a big impact on your life.

A narrative essay tells a story and all good stories are centered on a conflict of some sort. Experiences with unexpected obstacles, twists, or turns make for much more compelling essays and reveal more about your character and views on life.

If you’re writing a narrative essay as part of an admissions application, remember that the people reviewing your essay will be looking at it to gain a sense of not just your writing ability, but who you are as a person.

In these cases, it’s wise to choose a topic and experience from your life that demonstrates the qualities that the prompt is looking for, such as resilience, perseverance, the ability to stay calm under pressure, etc.

It’s also important to remember that your choice of topic is just a starting point. Many students find that they arrive at new ideas and insights as they write their first draft, so the final form of your essay may have a different focus than the one you started with.

How to outline and format a narrative essay

Even though you’re not advancing an argument or proving a point of view, a narrative essay still needs to have a coherent structure. Your reader has to be able to follow you as you tell the story and to figure out the larger point that you’re making.

You’ll be evaluated on is your handling of the topic and how you structure your essay. Even though a narrative essay doesn’t use the same structure as other essay types, you should still sketch out a loose outline so you can tell your story in a clear and compelling way.

To outline a narrative essay, you’ll want to determine:

  • how your story will start
  • what points or specifics that you want to cover
  • how your story will end
  • what pace and tone you will use

In the vast majority of cases, a narrative essay should be written in the first-person, using “I.” Also, most narrative essays will follow typical formatting guidelines, so you should choose a readable font like Times New Roman in size 11 or 12. Double-space your paragraphs and use 1” margins.

To get your creative wheels turning, consider how your story compares to archetypes and famous historical and literary figures both past and present. Weave these comparisons into your essay to improve the quality of your writing and connect your personal experience to a larger context.

How to write a narrative essay

Writing a narrative essay can sometimes be a challenge for students who typically write argumentative essays or research papers in a formal, objective style. To give you a better sense of how you can write a narrative essay, here is a short example of an essay in response to the prompt, “Write about an experience that challenged your view of yourself.”

Narrative essay example

Even as a child, I always had what people might call a reserved personality. It was sometimes framed as a positive (“Sarah is a good listener”) and at other times it was put in less-than-admiring terms (“Sarah is withdrawn and not very talkative”). It was the latter kind of comments that caused me to see my introverted nature as a drawback and as something I should work to eliminate. That is, until I joined my high school’s student council.

The first paragraph, or introduction, sets up the context, establishing the situation and introducing the meaningful event upon which the essay will focus.

The other four students making up the council were very outspoken and enthusiastic. I enjoyed being around them, and I often agreed with their ideas. However, when it came to overhauling our school’s recycling plan, we butted heads. When I spoke up and offered a different point of view, one of my fellow student council members launched into a speech, advocating for her point of view. As her voice filled the room, I couldn’t get a word in edgewise. I wondered if I should try to match her tone, volume, and assertiveness as a way to be heard. But I just couldn’t do it—it’s not my way, and it never has been. For a fleeting moment, I felt defeated. But then, something in me shifted.

In this paragraph, the writer goes into greater depth about how her existing thinking brought her to this point.

I reminded myself that my view was valid and deserved to be heard. So I waited. I let my fellow council member speak her piece and when she was finished, I deliberately waited a few moments before calmly stating my case. I chose my words well, and I spoke them succinctly. Just because I’m not a big talker doesn’t mean I’m not a big thinker. I thought of the quotation “still waters run deep” and I tried to embody that. The effect on the room was palpable. People listened. And I hadn’t had to shout my point to be heard.

This paragraph demonstrates the turn in the story, the moment when everything changed. The use of the quotation “still waters run deep” imbues the story with a dash of poetry and emotion.

We eventually reached a compromise on the matter and concluded the student council meeting. Our council supervisor came to me afterward and said: “You handled that so well, with such grace and poise. I was very impressed.” Her words in that moment changed me. I realized that a bombastic nature isn't necessarily a powerful one. There is power in quiet, too. This experience taught me to view my reserved personality not as a character flaw, but as a strength.

The final paragraph, or conclusion, closes with a statement about the significance of this event and how it ended up changing the writer in a meaningful way.

You should use descriptive writing in your narrative essay, but don’t overdo it. Use clear, concise, and correct language and grammar throughout. Additionally, make concrete points that reinforce the main idea of your narrative.

4. Ask a friend or family member to proofread your essay.

No matter what kind of writing you’re doing, you should always plan to proofread and revise. To ensure that your narrative essay is coherent and interesting, ask a friend or family member to read over your paper. This is especially important if your essay is responding to a prompt. It helps to have another person check to make sure that you’ve fully responded to the prompt or question.

Narrative essays are commonly assigned pieces of writing at different stages through school. Like any story, they have a plot, conflict, and characters. Typically, assignments involve telling a story from your own life that connects with class themes. It can be a fun type of assignment to write, if you approach it properly. Learn how to choose a good topic, get a solid rough draft on paper, and revise your narrative essay.

Choosing a Good Topic

Step 1 Read narrative essays for inspiration.

  • Most of the time, narrative essays will involve no outside research or references. Instead, you'll be using your personal story to provide the evidence of some point that you're trying to make.   • Narrative essays are a common school assignment used to test your creative story-telling skills, as well as your ability to connect some element of your personal life to a topic you might be discussing in class.

Step 3 Make sure your story fits the prompt.

  • You experienced adversity and had to overcome
  • You failed and had to deal with the consequences of that failure
  • Your personality or character was transformed

Step 4 Choose a story with a manageable plot.

  • Bad narrative essays are generally too broad. "My senior year of high school" or "This summer" are examples of stories that would be far too big to tell in the amount of specific detail that a good narrative essay requires. Pick a single event from the summer, or a single week of your senior year, not something that takes months to unfold.
  • It's also good to limit the number of characters you introduce. Only include other characters who are absolutely essential. Every single friend from your fifth grade class will be too many names to keep track of. Pick one.

Step 5 Choose a story with vibrant details.

  • Let your imagination fill in the gaps. When you're describing your grandmother's house and a specific weekend you remember spending there, it's not important to remember exactly what was cooked for dinner on Friday night, unless that's an important part of the story. What did your grandmother typically cook? What did it usually smell like? Those are the details we need.
  • Typically, narrative essays are "non-fiction," which means that you can't just make up a story. It needs to have really happened. Force yourself to stay as true as possible to the straight story.

Writing a Draft

Step 1 Outline the plot before you begin.

  • It helps to limit things as much as possible. While it might seem like we need to know a bunch of specific details from your senior year, try to think of a particularly tumultuous day from that year and tell us that story. Where does that story start? Not the first day of school that year. Find a better starting point.
  • If you want to tell the story of your prom night, does it start when you get dressed? Maybe. Does it start when you spill spaghetti sauce all down your dress before the dance? While that might seem like the climax of a story you want to tell, it might make a better starting place. Go straight to the drama.
  • You don't need to write up a formal outline for a narrative essay unless it's part of the assignment or it really helps you write. Listing the major scenes that need to be a part of the story will help you get organized and find a good place to start.

Step 2 Use a consistent point of view.

  • Don't switch perspectives throughout the story. This is a difficult and advanced technique to try to pull off, and it usually has the effect of being too complicated. There should only be one "I" in the story.
  • In general, narrative essays (and short stories for that matter) should also be told in past tense. So, you would write "Johnny and I walked to the store every Thursday" not "Johnny and I are walking to the store, like we do every Thursday."
  • You may be instructed to write in the 3rd person (such as he, she, it, they, them, their). If so, be consistent with your pronouns throughout the story.

Step 3 Describe the important characters.

  • Particular details are specific and only particular to the character being described. While it may be specific to say that your friend has brown hair, green eyes, is 5 feet (1.5 m) tall with an athletic build, these things don't tell us much about the character. The fact that he only wears silk dragon shirts? Now that gives us something interesting.
  • Try writing up a brief sketch of each principal character in your narrative essay, along with the specific details you remember about them. Pick a few essentials.

Step 4 Find the antagonist and conflict.

  • Who or what is the antagonist in your story? To answer this question, you also need to find out what the protagonist wants. What is the goal? What's the best case scenario for the protagonist? What stands in the protagonist's way?
  • The antagonist isn't "the bad guy" of the story, necessarily, and not every story has a clear antagonist. Also keep in mind that for some good personal narratives, you might be the antagonist yourself.

Step 5 Describe the setting.

  • Do a freewrite about the location that your story takes place. What do you know about the place? What can you remember? What can you find out?
  • If you do any research for your narrative essay, it will probably be here. Try to find out extra details about the setting of your story, or double-check your memory to make sure it's right.

Step 6 Use vivid details.

  • A popular creative writing phrase tells writers to "show" not to "tell." What this means is that you should give us details whenever possible, rather than telling us facts. You might tell us something like, "My dad was always sad that year," but if you wrote "Dad never spoke when he got home from work. We heard his truck, then heard as he laid his battered hardhat on the kitchen table. Then we heard him sigh deeply and take off his work clothes, which were stained with grease."

Your words should have an impact. "Good writing does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else's head."

Revising Your Essay

Step 1 Make sure your theme is clearly illustrated in the story.

  • Get the theme into the very beginning of the essay. Just as a researched argument essay needs to have a thesis statement somewhere in the first few paragraphs of the essay, a narrative essay needs a topic statement or a thesis statement to explain the main idea of the story.
  • This isn't "ruining the surprise" of the story, this is foreshadowing the important themes and details to notice over the course of the story as you tell it. A good writer doesn't need suspense in a narrative essay. The ending should seem inevitable.

Step 2 Use scenes and analyses.

  • Scene: "On our walk to the store, Jared and I stopped at the empty grass lot to talk. 'What's your problem lately?' he asked, his eyes welling with tears. I didn't know what to tell him. I fidgeted, kicked an empty paint bucket that was rusted over at the edge of the lot. 'Remember when we used to play baseball here?' I asked him."
  • Analysis: "We finished walking to the store and bought all the stuff for the big holiday dinner. We got a turkey, cornbread, cranberries. The works. The store was crazy-packed with happy holiday shoppers, but we walked through them all, not saying a word to each other. It took forever to lug it all home."

Step 3 Use and format...

  • Anything spoken by a character out loud needs to be included in quotation marks and attributed to the character speaking it: "I've never been to Paris," said James.
  • Each time a new character speaks, you need to make a new paragraph . If the same character speaks, multiple instances of dialog can exist in the same paragraph.

Step 4 Revise your essay

  • Revise for clarity first. Are your main points clear? If not, make them clear by including more details or narration in the writing. Hammer home your points.
  • Was the decision you made about the starting place of the story correct? Or, now that you've written, might it be better to start the story later? Ask the tough questions.
  • Proofreading is one part of revision, but it's a very minor part and it should be done last. Checking punctuation and spelling is the last thing you should be worried about in your narrative essay.

Narrative essays rely on hooking the reader, and enticing them to read on. But what is a narrative essay? We’re going to break down everything you need to know about these essays — definition, examples, tips and tricks included. By the end, you’ll be ready to craft your own narrative essay for school or for publication.

What’s a Narrative Essay?

First, let’s define narrative essay.

Narrative essays share a lot of similarities with personal essays, but whereas the former can be fictional or non-fictional, the latter are strictly non-fictional. The goal of the narrative essay is to use established storytelling techniques, like theme , conflict , and irony , in a uniquely personal way.

The responsibility of the narrative essayist is to make the reader feel connected to their story, regardless of the topic. This next video explores how writers can use structural elements and techniques to better engage their readers.

Purpose of narrative essay writing

Narrative essays give writers the ability to freely express themselves within the structure of a traditional story. Nearly all universities ask applicants to submit a narrative essay with their formal application. This is done for two reasons: they allow institutions to judge the linguistic and grammar capabilities of its applicants, as well as their raw creative side.

If you’re considering studying creative writing in an undergraduate or graduate program, then you’re going to write A LOT of narrative style essays. There’s a fix for AI-generated essays. Why aren’t we using it?

It’s the start of the school year, and thus the start of a fresh round of discourse on generative AI’s new role in schools. In the space of about three years, essays have gone from a mainstay of classroom education everywhere to a much less useful tool, for one reason: ChatGPT. Estimates of how many students use ChatGPT for essays vary , but it’s commonplace enough to force teachers to adapt .

While generative AI has many limitations, student essays fall into the category of services that they’re very good at: There are lots of examples of essays on the assigned topics in their training data, there’s demand for an enormous volume of such essays, and the standards for prose quality and original research in student essays are not all that high.

Right now, cheating on essays via the use of AI tools is hard to catch. A number of tools advertise they can verify that text is AI-generated, but they’re not very reliable . Since falsely accusing students of plagiarism is a big deal, these tools would have to be extremely accurate to work at all — and they simply aren’t.

AI fingerprinting with technology

But there is a technical solution here. Back in 2022, a team at OpenAI, led by quantum computing researcher Scott Aaronson , developed a “watermarking” solution that makes AI text virtually unmistakable — even if the end user changes a few words here and there or rearranges text. The solution is a bit technically complicated, but bear with me, because it’s also very interesting.

At its core, the way that AI text generation works is that the AI “guesses” a bunch of possible next tokens given what appears in a text so far. In order not to be overly predictable and produce the same repetitive output constantly, AI models don’t just guess the most probable token — instead, they include an element of randomization, favoring “more likely” completions but sometimes selecting a less likely one.

The watermarking works at this stage. Instead of having the AI generate the next token according to random selection, it has the AI use a nonrandom process: favoring next tokens that get a high score in an internal “scoring” function OpenAI invented. It might, for example, favor words with the letter V just slightly, so that text generated with this scoring rule will have 20 percent more Vs than normal human text (though the actual scoring functions are more complicated than this). Readers wouldn’t normally notice this — in fact, I edited this newsletter to increase the number of Vs in it, and I doubt this variation in my normal writing stood out.

Similarly, the watermarked text will not, at a glance, be different from normal AI output. But it would be straightforward for OpenAI, which knows the secret scoring rule, to evaluate whether a given body of text gets a much higher score on that hidden scoring rule than human-generated text ever would. If, for example, the scoring rule were my above example about the letter V, you could run this newsletter through a verification program and see that it has about 90 Vs in 1,200 words, more than you’d expect based on how often V is used in English. It’s a clever, technically sophisticated solution to a hard problem, and OpenAI has had a working prototype for two years .

So if we wanted to solve the problem of AI text masquerading as human-written text, it’s very much solvable. But OpenAI hasn’t released their watermarking system, nor has anyone else in the industry. Why not?

It’s all about competition

If OpenAI — and only OpenAI — released a watermarking system for ChatGPT, making it easy to tell when generative AI had produced a text, this wouldn’t affect student essay plagiarism in the slightest. Word would get out fast, and everyone would just switch over to one of the many AI options available today: Meta’s Llama, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini. Plagiarism would continue unabated, and OpenAI would lose a lot of its user base. So it’s not shocking that they would keep their watermarking system under wraps.

In a situation like this, it might seem appropriate for regulators to step in. If every generative AI system is required to have watermarking, then it’s not a competitive disadvantage. This is the logic behind a bill introduced this year in the California state Assembly, known as the California Digital Content Provenance Standards , which would require generative AI providers to make their AI-generated content detectable, along with requiring providers to label generative AI and remove deceptive content. OpenAI is in favor of the bill — not surprisingly, as they’re the only generative AI provider known to have a system that does this. Their rivals are mostly opposed.

I’m broadly in favor of some kind of watermarking requirements for generative AI content. AI can be incredibly useful , but its productive uses don’t require it to pretend to be human-created. And while I don’t think it’s the place of government to ban newspapers from replacing us journalists with AI, I certainly don’t want outlets to misinform readers about whether the content they’re reading was created by real humans .

Though I’d like some kind of watermarking obligation, I am not sure it’s possible to implement. The best of the “open” AI models that have been released (like the latest Llama), models that you can run yourself on your own computer, are very high quality — certainly good enough for student essays. They’re already out there, and there’s no way to go back and add watermarking to them because anyone can run the current versions, whatever updates are applied in future versions. (This is among the many ways I have complicated feelings about open models. They enable an enormous amount of creativity, research, and discovery — and they also make it impossible to do all kinds of common-sense anti-impersonation or anti-child sexual abuse material measures that we otherwise might really like to have.)

So even though watermarking is possible, I don’t think we can count on it, which means we’ll have to figure out how to address the ubiquity of easy, AI-generated content as a society. Teachers are already switching to in-class essay requirements and other approaches to cut down on student cheating. We’re likely to see a switch away from college admissions essays as well — and, honestly, it’ll be good riddance, as those were probably never a good way to select students .

But while I won’t mourn much over the college admissions essay, and while I think teachers are very much capable of finding better ways to assess students, I do notice some troubling trends in the whole saga. There was a simple way to let us harness the benefits of AI without obvious downsides like impersonation and plagiarism, yet AI development happened so fast that society more or less just let the opportunity pass us by. Individual labs could do it, but they won’t because it’d put them at a competitive disadvantage — and there isn’t likely to be a good way to make everyone do it.

In the school plagiarism debate, the stakes are low. But the same dynamic reflected in the AI watermarking debate — where commercial incentives stop companies from self-regulating and the pace of change stops external regulators from stepping in until it’s too late — seems likely to remain as the stakes get higher.

For those who hear voices, the ‘broken brain’ explanation is harmful. Psychiatry must embrace new meaning-making frameworks

In November 2020, the voices came. Luca didn’t know how many there were or how they managed to force themselves into his mind.

‘He’s only 20.’

‘We owe you money.’

‘[Pretending to be police] Another mind rape!’

‘You’re in hell.’

‘It’s a safe world.’

‘My little boy…’

Luca was 20. He was a musician living in London. He had taken some college courses but had to drop out to move out of his mother’s home. And now he appeared to be the target of a malicious experiment.

Over the months, he learned to distinguish the voices. There was a whole group of them, which he called ‘The Team’. The Team knew everything about him. They knew the names of his friends and family members. They knew about his musical aspirations. Sometimes they could be extremely cruel. They joked about the years of abuse he suffered under his mother – whom they named ‘Innocent’. They pretended to be his father, whom he scarcely knew. Yet they could show compassion. They celebrated his music. They promised to reveal their technologies to him. They said they would make him famous.

Eventually, the police brought Luca to a hospital against his will. A psychiatrist asked how long he had heard voices. Luca protested that he did not hear voices ; he heard people . His doctors told him he was having hallucinations and delusions. They said these were symptoms of a disorder they could treat, or at least manage, with drugs.

Luca agreed to take the drugs, not because he thought he was mad, but because he hoped they would disrupt the signal between his brain and The Team. But the drugs made things worse. They made The Team angry – so they tortured him more. He thought constantly about suicide. Sometimes the voices were so overwhelming he had to lie down wherever he was. One day he found himself on the floor of a grocery store. He typed ‘mind rape’ into his phone. That’s when he discovered the targeted individual community.

B efore about 2000, people with experiences like Luca’s had few options. They could turn to a psychiatrist, or spiral further into isolation, fear and paranoia. But the advent of the personal computer and the availability of the internet changed that. People like Luca were now communicating with each other, finding parallels between their experiences, and trying to track down who was doing this to them.

Hence was born the targeted individual (TI) community: a group of people who openly shared their experiences of high-tech harassment and organised stalking.

Among the first to come forth was a Canadian engineer, Eleanor White, who created a website called Multistalkervictims. A US Navy veteran, Derrick Robinson, started a non-profit, People Against Covert Torture and Surveillance, International (PACTS). A former analyst for the US National Security Agency, Karen Stewart, went public with her experiences of organised stalking.

Some TIs have sought refuge abroad. Many have the belief they’ve been microchipped

By the 2010s, a flood of people were sharing similar experiences. An Oxford-trained physicist, Katherine Horton, started a website on counter-technology called Stop007. A life coach in California, Cathy Meadows, wrote the book Hey Mom, I’m a Targeted Individual (2018) offering psychological support to TIs and their families. A physician from San Antonio in Texas, John Hall, speculated about the underlying technology in his book Guinea Pigs (2014). An ordained minister, the Rev Dr Millicent Black, started the online church Refuge from the Storm for other TIs, which sees the fulfilment of biblical prophecy in the harassment of TIs. Today the TI community is a loosely organised global network with regional and local support groups. In 2016, The New York Times estimated there were at least 10,000 people who identify as TIs.

TIs have a diverse range of experiences. Some involve electronic harassment. Voices projected into the mind. Crackling or popping sounds in the ears. Burning or pricking sensations on the skin. Migraines. Sleeplessness. Others centre around gang-stalking. Being followed in the streets. Several people wearing the same-coloured shirt, or driving the same-coloured car, as a coded threat. Strangers in public commenting on the TI’s private life. People breaking into their homes and damaging things. Some TIs have sought refuge abroad. Many have the belief they’ve been microchipped. Some implore surgeons to remove the implanted devices.

Researchers have collated a range of theories about why TIs believe these evils are happening to them. Some think it’s payback from an ex-spouse, or retaliation for being a whistleblower at work. Others think they were just unlucky to be chosen for the experiment. Many share the belief that their tormenters want others to ‘think they’re crazy’ to discredit them. Cathy Meadows urges TIs not to share their experiences too openly as ‘it serves [the stalkers’] ultimate purpose of making the target look crazy’. Instead, she offers TIs practical advice: find love, look great, don’t act paranoid.

Shortly after that moment on the floor of a grocery store, Luca met with more experienced TIs. An older man gave Luca two pieces of advice: keep going, and don’t kill yourself.

J ournalists often depict the TI community as a postmodern tragedy – a byproduct of unregulated social media. Here are thousands of very sick people, we’re told, who are just reinforcing each other’s delusions and making each other sicker because they refuse to see psychiatrists. These reports dismiss TIs as promoting one more dangerous conspiracy theory (though I doubt that TIs will ever become a major driver of conspiracy theories, partly because they have unusual experiences that run-of-the-mill conspiracy theorists lack).

However, as I talked with TIs and some of the mental health professionals who have taken a sympathetic interest in them, I began to see a different story emerge. What if the TI community is an inevitable reaction to the shortcomings of medical psychiatry itself?

Put differently, what if medical psychiatry is inadvertently pushing people like Luca deeper into the TI community?

The TI narrative validates their basic ability to perceive the world and reason about it

I began to see TIs like Luca as a group of individuals who are caught between two competing narratives. By all accounts, these are people who are hearing terrifying voices, experiencing painful sensations or seeing themselves as being stalked. Over the years, the main narrative that has emerged to explain their experiences belongs to medical psychiatry. It holds that these voices and beliefs – or ‘hallucinations’ and ‘delusions’ – are symptoms of a disorder such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder or schizoaffective disorder. These disorders likely stem from brain dysfunctions or defective genes. In the best of cases, these symptoms can be managed with drugs, or some combination of drugs and therapy. Though the medical narrative helps some, research is showing just how stigmatising and disempowering it is for others. Some get the message that their brain is broken and that they can never trust their thoughts and perceptions. Many, like Luca, are put on antipsychotic drugs with debilitating side-effects.

The second narrative – the TI narrative – is that if you’re having these sorts of experiences, nothing is wrong with your mind . Your perceptual and reasoning abilities are functioning exactly the way they’re designed to. Unfortunately, you are the victim of gang-stalking or electronic harassment. Despite your suffering, however, there is hope: you can band together with other TIs in a global movement to expose your attackers and dismantle their techniques.

Trapped between these two narratives, many opt for the TI narrative. It validates their basic ability to perceive the world and reason about it – precisely what psychiatry’s medical narrative denies. It infuses their frightening experiences with a powerful sense of purpose and coherence. It gives TIs the most precious resource of all: community, belonging, even love.

But if psychiatry’s broken-brain narrative is pushing people deeper into the TI community, how did this happen? How is it possible that the very profession that was designed to support people like Luca might be making them worse off? And are there any alternatives to these two narratives – the idea that your brain is broken, and the idea that you’re actually being persecuted?

T he idea that disembodied voices and strange beliefs are symptoms of a brain disorder is very old. In the West, it stretches back to the manifesto On the Sacred Disease (400 BCE), in which ancient Greek doctors tell us that all forms of madness stem from air deprivation in the brain. In the first half of the 20th century, asylum psychiatrists with a penchant for experimental remedies – lobotomies, insulin comas, malaria injections, even tooth extractions – embraced the medical vision.

But even in the 1960s and early ’70s, there were other paradigms available to suffering people. There was a collection of viewpoints that didn’t see hallucinations, delusions or other extreme experiences as symptoms of a disease, but as doorways to personal, social or spiritual transformation. These experiences, if properly understood, would lead the individual to a higher level of human flourishing. In the words of today’s Mad Pride movement, they were ‘dangerous gifts’.

There were at least three alternative perspectives that framed extreme experiences as psychological, social or spiritual awakenings, rather than brain dysfunctions.

One approach saw the mad mind as a wounded mind – not wounded in the sense of broken, but in the sense of having survived painful life experiences. The experiences we call ‘paranoia’ – being hypervigilant to threats, seeing malicious motives everywhere – could be a protective response of the organism to real threats, rather than symptoms of a disease. Suppose a person has survived abuse, neglect or other forms of trauma, such as racism, classism, climate disaster or homophobia. Being hypervigilant to threats is actually a pretty reasonable response to those problems. In the 1930s, psychiatrists in the US like Frieda Fromm-Reichmann of the Chestnut Lodge psychiatric institute, or her colleague Harry Stack Sullivan, viewed the symptoms of schizophrenia as the start of a journey of recovery.

A second approach looked at psychosis not as a trauma response, but as a mirror of a damaged society. In the 1960s, the Scottish psychiatrist R D Laing, who was influenced by Fromm-Reichmann and Sullivan, described madness as a form of insight, a sane response to an insane world. Its fundamental truth is that the conditions of modern society are no longer fit for human flourishing. Along these lines, the journalist Jean Guerrero writing in Wired in 2018 described TIs as the prophets of the information era, and the proverbial ‘canaries in the coal mine’, who offer a dire warning about the reality of constant electronic surveillance. We don’t have to accept the literal truth of the TI narrative to see it as an accurate, symbolic representation of our social plight.

The answer wasn’t always to give people stigmatising labels and pummel their brains with antipsychotic drugs

A third approach saw, in madness, a spiritual crisis or ‘ spiritual emergency ’, a term coined in the 1980s by Stanislav and Christina Grof but with roots in the work of Carl Jung and Abraham Maslow. In this view, the ‘self’ is a mere drop in a vast sea of intelligence, consciousness and love. What if what we call insanity is a form of unmediated contact with this cosmic intelligence? What if experiences of psychosis – disembodied voices, strange convictions, the sense of being out of one’s body – are precursors of a powerful spiritual change, one that requires a religious guide, not a doctor? The documentary film Crazywise (2016) tells the story of Gogo Ekhaya Esima, a Brooklyn activist who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but who rejected her label, returned to her ancestral roots, and became a Sangoma traditional healer and peer counsellor.

The point is, not long ago, there was a host of alternative frameworks for making sense of these extreme experiences. People with paranoid beliefs weren’t trapped between the broken-brain narrative and the literal persecution narrative. Within this broader range of narratives – a trauma response, a mirror of a broken society, a spiritual awakening – some were able to find real healing. The answer wasn’t always to give people stigmatising labels and pummel their brains with antipsychotic drugs.

One reason I’m aware of these alternative paradigms is because I saw how they played out in my dad’s own life . In the summer of 1973, a few months after I was born, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He was a lawyer working under the US president Richard Nixon, and he formed the belief that he was being surveilled – not unreasonable given Nixon’s penchant for spying on his own staff. My dad’s fears soon escalated into the belief that my mother was a government spy, his doctor had inserted a tracking device into his anus, and The Washington Post was reporting on his activities in the Sports section (on the pretext of describing a rather marginal baseball player).

Fortunately, my dad had read psychiatrists like R D Laing, and psychologists like Rollo May and Abraham Maslow. He understood that what we call madness isn’t always a breakdown, but a potential breakthrough. He agreed to see a psychiatrist, but only under the condition he wouldn’t be given drugs. The psychiatrist agreed and, sometimes with my mother, had conversations about how to navigate his strange experiences. Ultimately, he was able to continue working for the Labor Department for another 12 years, until similar episodes in the 1980s rendered him unable to work.

But if the 1960s witnessed the proliferation of alternative, meaning-making frameworks, how did our perspective become so limited? How did this medical vision – replete with its diagnoses, medications, symptom checklists, hypothetical brain dysfunctions – come to exert such a forceful grip on our collective imagination? How is it that people like Luca face such a tragic forced choice between the broken-brain narrative and the TI narrative?

H istorians of psychiatry agree that a momentous paradigm shift took place in the 1980s. They often call this shift the ‘second biological revolution’, after a similar revolution that took place in Germany in the 1850s. It was popularised by books like Nancy Andreasen’s The Broken Brain (1984), Solomon Snyder’s Drugs and the Brain (1986) and Jon Franklin’s Molecules of the Mind (1987). It coincided with an explosive growth in the pharmaceutical industry that promised to heal the mind with drugs.

In this vision, mental disorders were best understood as brain dysfunctions that could be traced to abnormal genes. Schizophrenia stemmed from an imbalance of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Depression was a serotonin imbalance. Bipolar disorder was a lithium imbalance. ADHD a deficiency of norepinephrine. These conditions, of course, could be triggered by life events, but they were ultimately biological. It was a reincarnation of the ancient Greek humoral theory, which saw the various forms of madness as imbalances in the four humours: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, black bile.

They insisted that seeing mental disorders as defective brain chemistry would alleviate shame and stigma

Historians disagree about what caused this paradigm shift. Some emphasise the failure of psychoanalysis to help those in most severe need. Others point to the success of drugs in getting people out of the asylum. Others emphasise the role of pharmaceutical companies in aggressively marketing their products. Still others point to high-profile legal cases, like that of Ray Osheroff, who sued Chestnut Lodge in the early 1980s because they’d refused to give him antidepressants.

My own research centres around another factor. In the 1970s, many psychiatrists thought they’d actually discovered the seat of madness in the brain. The neuroscientist and psychiatrist Solomon Snyder at Johns Hopkins University assembled the evidence for this claim in his influential paper ‘The Dopamine Hypothesis of Schizophrenia’ (1976). There, he showed that antipsychotic drugs like haloperidol worked by plugging dopamine neurons in the brain – and that their effectiveness in managing symptoms was proportional to their ability to block those neurons. He also showed that one could induce a temporary psychosis in a sane person by flooding their dopamine receptors with amphetamines. By turning dopamine on and off, he concluded, one could turn schizophrenia on and off like a faucet. He wrote a popular book arguing that all major mental disorders had their own chemical imbalance. He even helped start two pharmaceutical companies to devise tailored treatments for each disorder.

The broken-brain narrative wasn’t supported just by science but by politics too. A chorus of doctors, journalists and activists insisted that seeing mental disorders in terms of defective brain chemistry would alleviate shame and stigma. They gave the lie to the idea that extreme low mood, disabling anxiety or obsessive thoughts might represent a character flaw or a moral defect – or even bad parenting.

B y the mid 1980s, my dad’s own treatment changed dramatically, in tune with the changing times. In 1986 – in the waning years of the Cold War – he began having unusual experiences again. He thought God was telling him to use his position in the Labor Department to promote worldwide nuclear disarmament. He also thought the French actress Catherine Deneuve was communicating with him telepathically for guidance and support.

He was hospitalised multiple times in the 1980s and ’90s. In better times, I’d visit him at the private Washington Hospital Center in an upscale neighbourhood in northwest Washington, DC. In worse times, I’d visit him in St Elizabeth’s, a public asylum with nearly 300 beds on the south side of the Anacostia River, in the neighbourhood that earned the city its moniker as ‘murder capital of the US’. St Elizabeth’s also housed John Hinckley, Jr, after he shot Ronald Reagan in 1981 in a bid to win Jodie Foster’s affection. By the 1990s, my dad’s long hospital stays were replaced by multi-day hospitalisations where he’d be put on drugs, monitored, and released under the supervision of a social worker.

His older diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia eventually gave way to a newer one of bipolar disorder. The doctors put him on a combination of drugs that dampened the voices, but had their own debilitating side-effects. Their overall impact was a mental dulling and a muscular rigidity. Sometimes I sat with him for hours on end as he drank cup after cup of coffee and chain-smoked to stave off the fog. A simple act like tying his shoes or putting a dollar into a vending machine became laborious and frustrating.

When the mental fog made life unbearable, he would ditch the pills. God and Catherine would swiftly return, and he’d be off on a new geopolitical adventure. The idea that my dad’s experiences represented a coherent response to a childhood of abuse and neglect, or that they represented a window onto the dangerous reality of nuclear annihilation, or that they heralded a spiritual transformation – the sorts of ideas he was receptive to in the 1970s – was utterly foreign to psychiatry’s new medical view.

Psychiatrists became equally disenchanted with the serotonin theory of depression

The drugs eventually took a toll on his body. The specific combination of medications – lithium and thioridazine – is now known to be neurotoxic. His motor problems worsened, and led to ‘antipsychotic-induced dysphagia’, a condition in which your brain is unable to regulate the thin slice of tissue that stops food and water from entering your lungs. Dysphagia contributed to his death in 2005 by pneumonia.

It would be one thing if the medical vision were true. The fact that TIs rebel against the broken-brain narrative would be no more surprising than that someone can be in denial about diabetes or cancer. But the past three decades have shown that psychiatry’s medical vision is neither scientifically credible nor morally sound.

The scientific problems came first. Even 20 years after Snyder’s breakthrough paper, nobody could find the ‘smoking gun’ – the supposed dopamine abnormalities in patients who’d never taken antipsychotic drugs. Moreover, a newer generation of drugs, the so-called ‘atypicals’, took a much larger share of the psychiatric drug market. They seemed to manage symptoms equally well with fewer side-effects – even though they targeted a much wider profile of chemicals than dopamine. Dopamine began to look like one small piece of a much larger puzzle. Psychiatrists became equally disenchanted with the serotonin theory of depression. Today, the idea that these drugs work by reversing chemical imbalances appears increasingly groundless.

If the scientific credibility of the medical vision is waning, its political justification has also eroded. Over the past decade, a new generation of psychologists have been studying the nature of mental health stigma : what it is, how it’s created, how to solve it. The consensus of this research is that psychiatry’s medical vision – and its language of ‘chemical imbalances’, ‘brain circuit defects’, ‘genetic abnormalities’ and so on – merely replaces one kind of stigma for another.

In particular, medical narratives tend to trigger three negative outcomes. They make other people want to distance themselves from the patient. They make patients pessimistic about their own recovery. And they evoke, in the patient’s mind, the idea that drugs are the optimal course of treatment. Perhaps the most troubling finding of the new research is that stigma toward schizophrenia – measured as a desire for social distance – has actually increased over the past 30 years, plausibly due to the greater acceptance of the medical narrative.

Academic psychiatrists today often claim that psychiatry has already moved away from the narrow biomedical vision of the 1980s. They say that psychiatry has instead embraced a more holistic, ‘biopsychosocial’ vision that respects all of the different factors – brain imbalances, childhood trauma, social injustice – that make us unwell. Aren’t psychiatry’s critics just beating a dead horse?

But these reassurances ring hollow to me. Despite the calls for a more holistic model, in practice, interventions for people like Luca have changed very little since the 1990s, with its short cycles of hospitalisation, diagnosis, drugs and monitoring. Psychiatry journals are increasingly dominated by biological perspectives, to the exclusion of psychological and social ones. And the fact that about one-fifth of US college students are on antidepressant drugs – and about a third of Scottish adults are on some form of psychiatric medication – suggests that, if anything, psychiatry’s medical vision is actually more entrenched now than it was in the 1990s.

But if psychiatry’s medical vision is failing TIs like Luca, what should we replace it with? How can we break out of this bind?

D espite the entrenchment of the medical vision, my recent explorations of psychological, social and spiritual approaches to psychosis have made me optimistic about the future. I think we’re at the beginning of a renaissance of alternative approaches that loosely resembles the plurality of paradigms in the 1960s. The ultimate goal of these movements is to create safe, non-coercive, therapeutic communities that give people space to explore alternative, meaning-making frameworks – an ethos embodied in Soteria Houses, the Open Dialogue framework, and Inner Fire, among others. One of the leading organisations in this context is the global Hearing Voices Network, which encourages people to understand their voices and other unusual experiences not as symptoms of a disease, but a source of creativity, inspiration and insight.

One avenue of intensive exploration is that experiences such as threatening voices, unusual beliefs and dissociative episodes are protective responses to traumatic experiences. Although popular books like Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score (2014) remain controversial, what’s no longer controversial is the link between childhood abuse and neglect, and adult experiences of psychosis. Hence the popular slogan that we should no longer ask patients ‘What’s wrong with you?’ but ‘What happened to you?’ The idea that terrifying experiences like Luca’s can be a coherent response to abuse or neglect has been developed by organisations such as the Hearing Voices Network, the National Paranoia Network, and the Power Threat Meaning Framework.

A second approach sees psychosis as a ‘ spiritual emergency ’. This view is advanced today by organisations like Safely Held Spaces and the International Spiritual Emergence Network. While some of a materialist mindset scoff at the idea that psychosis has a spiritual dimension, these framings have powerful practical benefits. Cross-cultural research on schizophrenia has shown that the way culture makes sense of voice-hearing impacts both the content and the emotional tone of the voices. In the US, where voice-hearing in the context of schizophrenia is framed as a symptom of a disease, voices are experienced as more invasive, hostile and distressing. In parts of India, Ghana and China, where voices tend to be understood as belonging to deceased ancestors or other spirits, voices are experienced as more benevolent and less scary. Some voice-hearers have found that, simply by adopting a curious and compassionate attitude to what the voices are trying to say, they become less threatening and more supportive.

Ideally, people would explore these alternative paradigms in a therapeutic community

There are yet other approaches. Some within the voice-hearing community contend that hearing voices is merely a different way of processing information about the world – a form of neurodiversity with its own strengths and limits. Some groups, such as the Plural Movement and, to a lesser extent, proponents of Internal Family Systems, hold that voice-hearing is a natural sign of the multiplicity of the soul. Perhaps all of us are more or less ‘multiple’, and voice-hearing is simply one way that different parts of the mind talk to each other.

The problem is this: unless people like Luca have access to this whole range of meaning-making frameworks, they’ll either understand their voices in terms of a hypothetical brain disease, or in terms of hostile intruders running an experiment on them. We urgently need to expand the range of scientifically plausible alternatives.

This isn’t to say that drugs have no place in the new frameworks. Drugs can be valuable tools to help manage distressing experiences. That has been well known for millennia with drugs like psylocibin, hashish, opium, tobacco and alcohol. But they don’t seem to work by reversing chemical imbalances – just as alcohol doesn’t make you feel good by ‘reversing an alcohol deficiency’. Rather, they help us temporarily blunt painful thoughts and feelings so we can better address their root causes.

The goal of these frameworks, as I see it, is to break the grip of the forced choice between two grim alternatives – not to impose any particular narrative onto suffering people. Ideally, people would explore these alternative paradigms in a therapeutic community that emphasises shared decision-making and personal autonomy. If someone chooses to embrace the medical narrative, it should be because they’ve been exposed to multiple paradigms and feel that this narrative makes the most sense for them. And if others, after becoming aware of these paradigms, choose to accept the TI narrative, then the best path forward is for them to connect with a community like PACTS that can give them the non-stigmatising support they need. But mental health professionals ought to put more time and effort into raising awareness of the neglected third path: we can embrace voices and visions as part of ordinary human experience, without accepting the literal truth of everything they say.

I recently reconnected with Luca. His own journey, which began so abruptly in November 2020, has now taken on new contours. He still hears the voices, and he holds the belief that he’s the subject of a cruel experiment. He explicitly identifies as a TI. But he’s also placing those horrific experiences into a broader spiritual perspective, much like that advanced by the International Spiritual Emergence Network.

Luca now sees himself as intensely receptive to spiritual influences. The same psychic openness that allowed The Team to gain a foothold into his mind is also a fountain of powerful revelations – massive ‘information downloads’ from the cosmic mind. These revelations centre around the broken state of humanity, the interweaving of the spiritual and material worlds, and the need for love – insights he’s compiling into a book. He is no longer preoccupied with victimhood, but with survivorship, and with his greater mission to promote ‘unprecedented change, healing and love’.

The real tragedy here is not that psychiatrists failed to stamp out Luca’s voices and strange beliefs. The tragedy is that he had to discover this spiritual path on his own.

'I Just Keep Talking' is a refreshing and wide-ranging essay collection

Nell Irvin Painter — author, scholar, historian, artist, raconteur — rocked my world with her The History of White People and endeared me with her memoir Old in Art School . Painter’s latest book, I Just Keep Talking is an insightful addition to her canon.

Painter’s professional accomplishments are stratospheric: a chair in the American History Department at Princeton, bestselling author of eight books along with others she’s edited, too many other publications to count, and an entirely separate career as a visual artist. She calls her latest book “A Life in Essays,” which I found reductive. Although the first group of essays is entitled “Autobiography,” this volume reaches far beyond Nell Painter’s own story in the best possible way.

Painter’s The History of White People combines scholarship with readability to prove that “whiteness” is a relatively newly created sociological construct. Slavery has been around for millennia, as has war and conquering peoples, but whiteness, with its bizarre, insidious, and pervasive myths about racial superiority, dates from around the 15th century forward. The concept of whiteness is entangled with America’s mendacious justifications for its capture and trade in human beings, and the terrible, lasting consequences of chattel slavery.

Painter has been clear that she stands on the shoulders of others in naming whiteness as a construct. What makes The History of White People indispensable is that it collects the historical antecedents of whiteness in a compelling narrative, and calls out to readers, including myself, the need to unlearn whiteness as a norm, even — and especially — if it is an unconscious norm.

As Painter wound down from a full academic load at Princeton, she obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in fine art. In Old in Art School, as well as this current volume, she recounts the putdowns and hazing she suffered from fellow art students and her art professors, just as The History of White People was hitting the bestseller lists. Painter acknowledges that book’s commercial success but does not hide her bitterness that it did not win any major prizes.

Painter’s tour through her life and interests makes for a fascinating journey. To introduce her essay collection, Painter writes, “My Blackness isn’t broken… Mine is a Blackness of solidarity, a community, a connectedness….” She grew up in an intellectual family in the Bay Area amidst the burgeoning Black power movement. Her studies took her to Ghana and Paris, before completing her Ph.D. in U.S. history at Harvard.

Painter started making art at an early age. She threads that interest through the essays, wondering what would have happened if her professional life had started with art, instead of as a scholar.

Painter’s captivating mixed media illustrations in I Just Keep Talking speak to injustice. She combines words that blister — “same frustrations for 25 years” (a work from 2022), with blocks of color and figurative representations. I felt drawn in by these visual pieces with their trenchant messages. “This text + art is the way I work, the way I think,” she writes. In Painter’s hands, a picture can be worth a thousand words.

Painter’s essays pose critical questions. She will not accept received wisdom at face value, refuses the status quo, and freely offers her expert opinions. The pieces in this book address such wide topics as the meaning of history and historiography; America’s false, rose-colored-glasses-interpretation of slavery; the appalling absence of Black people from America’s story about itself; how and where feminism fits in; southern American history; the white gaze; and visual culture.

She takes a hard look at Thomas Jefferson’s hypocrisy concerning Black people and slavery, and compares his viewpoint to that of Charles Dickens, who toured the U.S. 15 years after Jefferson died. Audiences cooled to Dickens after he “excoriate[d] Americans for…tolerating the continued existence of enslavement by shrugging their shoulders, saying nothing can be done on account of ‘public opinion.’”

Painter was onto Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas well before Professor Hill delivered her explosive testimony at his confirmation hearing. In a chapter called “Hill, Thomas, and the Use of Racial Stereotype,” Painter delivers a withering takedown of Thomas’ manipulation of gender stereotypes to advantage himself.

Painter dates her essays and provides extensive endnotes, but I wanted more information about which essays had been previously published and which, if any, derived from unpublished journal entries. I wondered particularly about the shorter, less annotated pieces, which I could imagine her writing to develop analyses for longer efforts (though only speculation on my part).

The variety in length and scholarly sophistication is refreshing in this collection. Each entry deals with topics that are sadly as relevant today as they have been throughout America’s history.

 “ Doing more cancer screening won’t reduce Black-white health disparities ,” by Adewole Adamson, Vishal Patel, and H. Gilbert Welch

The response.

The op-ed unfairly and dangerously diminishes the value of cancer screening in reducing health disparities. As the writers acknowledge, numerous, complex factors contribute to poorer outcomes for Black patients than for white patients. Long-standing problems — like structural racism, poverty, lack of health insurance, and reduced care access — lead to poorer health and outcomes. Medtech innovators have forcefully advocated for Medicare, and other, policies to facilitate patient access to technologies, both established and emerging — including cancer screening — and are developing devices that are faster, more accurate, and more accessible than before. Cervical cancer screening kits for home use are in development. AI-enabled medtech devices are achieving more accurate diagnoses and helping clinicians find appropriate care pathways.

These devices have tremendous potential to reduce the number of tests needed for accurate diagnoses and to direct patients to the best care. Early detection can directly impact patient outcomes, treatment options, and financial burden. A patient whose cancer is detected early may have a better prognosis and may require less aggressive and/or less lengthy care. Longer care can be especially financially debilitating for under-resourced patients. Equal or higher rates of screening for Black patients relative to white patients is a positive development. It reflects years of dedicated advocacy toward getting patients what they need.

Of course, the work is far from over. For example, women with dense breast tissue need screening beyond mammograms, and access to supplemental screening is inadequate. Addressing health disparities in cancer diagnoses and care requires a comprehensive approach, and screening plays a vital role.

So rather than cast screening as the enemy, we should promote it alongside the necessary steps preceding and following it. Maybe screening gets an under-resourced patient in the door. If there’s a cancer diagnosis, the next step should be ensuring access to appropriate treatment, not devaluing the screening that led to the diagnosis.

The authors would have patients question the value of screening. Will that accomplish better health? Instead of dismissing cancer screening, which has been shown to work, those with a voice in health care debates should continue promoting equal access to all the resources that improve patient health.

Dr. Morgan describes a health care philosophy embraced by many physicians. We are cogs in a medicoeconomic system that pays no heed to the interests of the patient. The chaos is united in only one central concept: financial gain. Any practicing physician must acknowledge this reality. Dr. Morgan gives more voice to those in the profession who have grown weary of the inherent conflicts of trying to practice good medicine, while at the same time being inundated with perverse incentives which feeds the bottom line.

“ To stop mpox from becoming the next pandemic, we must address global vaccine inequities ,” by Wilfredo R. Matias

“Have we learned nothing from Covid-19?” That’s the right question, but Dr. Matias reaches the wrong conclusion. The real lesson is not to rely on the World Health Organization to look after the needs of developing nations. In the case of mpox, there isn’t a vaccine shortage. Both Bavarian Nordic (the manufacturer of the adult vaccine) and KM Biologics (manufacturer of the mpox vaccine for children) are ready and willing to ship their products to nations such as the Congo. What’s standing in their way is the unwillingness of the WHO to “precertify” that these products are safe and effective. Now the WHO says countries can begin to negotiate pricing before their process is complete. The WHO is in over its head. It is neither staffed nor financially resourced to undertake a thorough review of vaccine data — unlike either the European Medicines Agency or the Food and Drug Administration.

The WHO should step aside and let the expert judgment of gold standard global regulators expedite delivery to the Congo and other nations in Africa and elsewhere. Vaccine “prequalification” is a joke — a dangerous one — and a lesson we should have learned from the WHO’s debacle during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In general I agree with this opinion. However, in order to have competition, the consumer/prospective consumer needs to have adequate understandable information regarding the likely cost between providers, and there needs to be a bare minimum of providers competing with each other. In many nonurban areas, there is no real competition due to a shortage of providers for many services — and for some specialties there is no real competition even in major metros. These situations exist with or without any price regulation or incentives. And in order to have real competition, providers must be more transparent than they are — for most services there is little true transparency even after the recent transparency requirements were imposed. So if we are going to back off of pricing regulations, we will need a corresponding improvement in true transparency for competition to become a reality.

“ A harm-reduction approach to eating out ,” by Sophia Hua

Portion control is a key factor in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, so the author’s exhortation to restaurants to offer two size options is sound. For those with just a bit of willpower, however, there’s another alternative: the doggie bag. When the plate of food arrives, just divide it all in half and take home the leftovers for tomorrow’s dinner. This limits calorie intake and proves a better bargain when the check arrives.
