I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “ Friends ” character and has been with us for the last nine months. His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us. 

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc. 

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc. 

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table. 

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Both my parents are working. Though my grandparents live with us, they are old and taking care of a pet would have been too much to ask from them. Besides, my brother was a toddler then and my mother feared that he might catch infection. She tried to explain all these points to me. But I did not listen to any of her explanations. I went to my grandmother and requested her to convince mom to get a pet dog. My grandmother also tried to explain the same points. However, I kept convincing her for days and she finally agreed to take care of the dog for half the day until I came home from school. The rest was all my responsibility.

Somehow, I also convinced my father. Since he has a liking for dogs, convincing him was not that difficult. So finally my mother had to agree. We went to a nearby pet shop and my heart went drooling over this 2 months old German shepherd who was sleeping peacefully in a small cage. I knew at once that I wanted to keep him.

Roger won everyone’s Heart

Roger was so small and cute that almost everyone in my family fell in love with it as soon as I brought him home. My mother who detested the idea of bringing a pet home also found it cute and grew fond of it over the time. Dogs love babies and are very protective about them. Roger and my younger brother thus became friends almost instantly. Super excited about including Roger in the family, I told all my friends about it the same day.

Was I Capable of Killing My Cat for Bad Behavior?

One day in 1991, I thought about taking my healthy six-year-old cat to the ASPCA, where she would almost certainly have been “put down,” a.k.a. killed. I had adopted Suki when she was six months old and lived with her lovingly until a dramatic upheaval caused us to be (almost literally) at each other’s throats. After nearly two months of animosity, I’d reached a breaking point: She would have to go. That I would seriously consider doing this to a beloved pet revealed me to myself in a way that still gives me pause. It is remarkable how a relationship with an animal can do that.

I grew up having cats as pets, but I didn’t really own one as an adult until the age of 30; my circumstances were too unstable, and the few attempts I’d made as a teenager to adopt the cats that had shown up in my life didn’t end well. When I moved to Manhattan in my 20s and finally found a place to live, it was a tiny studio that I deemed too small for a cat to live in with any satisfaction. It would be, I thought, unfair to put an animal in that situation.

But then this cat showed up. One day in the spring of ’85, I was walking down 8th Street when I heard loud meowing — to my surprise, it seemed to be coming from a parked car surrounded by a small crowd of people who were looking under the body and the hood. As I came closer, someone said, “There it is!” before pulling from deep under the hood a limp, very shocked, loudly crying adolescent tabby cat. Because the driver of the car had no idea where the little cat had come from, because no one else volunteered, and because I lived close by, I offered to provide her with temporary shelter (plus vet care; her paws were burned) and find her a home. But the latter proved near impossible, and during the time it took to realize that, Suki and I had bonded. She was wonderfully intelligent, full of energy and play but also tenderness and desire for affection. And she seemed to be very comfortable in my studio.

Still, I adopted her with reservations in part because of my strange schedule; I often worked a graveyard shift that sometimes lasted 12 hours, and I couldn’t afford to turn down the work when it came. On the flip side, because the job was freelance, I would get several days off at a time. I thought it could work out.

And it did, sort of. When I could be there for her, Suki was happy enough — but as she grew bigger, the small space chafed, particularly during those long shifts. I would sometimes come home too exhausted to play with her for longer than 20 minutes or so, then lie in bed trying to sleep while she rocketed around the room and over my body, knocking stuff down, batting at my nose until I was so aggravated that I got up and yelled at her, then tossed her in the bathroom and closed the door.

To give her some variety, I let her roam in the hall when the super wasn’t around and tried taking her out for walks in a harness that she didn’t like. It was stressful, and I felt real guilt about frustrating her natural wants. One particularly awful time, I was especially desperate to sleep and she was especially desperate to charge around the room; I so lost my temper that I actually slapped her, causing her to race up into the space above my closet to hide. I got back into bed but couldn’t sleep because I felt wretched for hitting her. My wretchedness lasted for maybe five minutes before Suki came blasting down from her perch, charged back and forth over me, knocked something down, then jumped up on the bed, batted my nose and looked at me like, “Bitch, what are you gonna do about it?” I felt such admiration and delight that I laughed! I petted her, let her play with and bite my hand a little; after that, I guess she’d blown off enough steam to sleep because she lay down next to me as usual.

While it was rocky at times, there was respect and affection; we gave each other happiness. But it also felt like we were in an ongoing, often tense negotiation with each other regarding space and need. In this negotiation I certainly had the most power. But it would be a mistake to say that Suki, a remarkably strong-willed little creature, had none. I’m thinking of the time when I was so sick that I couldn’t get out of bed except to feed Suki or use the bathroom; during that time, she did not run around the room or swat my nose even once. She stayed next to me — until one morning when she sniffed me, realized the fever had broken, and smacked my nose, meaning, “Okay, ass out of bed.”

In 1987, I sold my first book, and we later moved to Marin County in California. The place was an in-law cottage that looked like a renovated barn. It was located in a beautiful canyon. It was at least three times as big as my studio had been, with sliding glass doors that opened onto a deck looking out into a ravine full of greenery and wildlife. Suki was very pleased — she made that plain with her ecstatic facial marking of every corner and her purring, full-bodied rubbing on my legs. I was cautious about letting her out at first, but when I finally did, her happiness was complete. Because I now worked at home, I was with her much more of the time, so in addition to the outdoors, she had more frequent playtimes with me. She no longer woke me up with frenetic racings around or attacked my nose. She also stopped getting the cystitis which had plagued her the entire four years we had lived in the Manhattan studio.

It was lovely and then — I made a mistake.

I had been thinking about getting a kitten, wondering if it would make Suki even happier or … not. Then one serendipitous afternoon, a woman walked up to me on the street with a cardboard box. She said she had found a kitten on the side of the road and couldn’t adopt it: Did I want it? This was obviously a sign! I brought the kitten — a tiny orange male — home on the spot.

Suki took one look at the newcomer and hated him. She never hurt the kitten, whom I named Honus, but she cursed at and menaced him constantly, rising above him with one paw ready to strike. She cursed at and menaced me constantly, not even allowing me to touch her. I wasn’t shocked by this. But I expected her to calm down eventually. And she might have if she’d had more time. In a few weeks, I was due to leave town for a professional trip for nearly a month. In the week before I left, I was encouraged to see her show some curiosity toward Honus; she also softened toward me, letting me pet her a little. Feeling optimistic, I arranged for a pet sitter named Barbara to stay at the house during my absence.

It went wrong almost immediately. With every call home I made, the situation seemed to have gotten worse. “I’m afraid of Suki,” said Barbara. “I’m afraid to get out of bed in the morning—she’s circling the bed like a shark.” I found this description so bizarre that I decided Barbara must be at fault. Then Suki began attacking Barbara, swiping at her legs.

I was about to get an early ticket home when there was another development: Barbara woke one morning to find that Suki’s face was horribly swollen. My poor cat had a tooth infection, meaning she’d been in pain for some time and needed surgery. Suki had to spend at least a week at the vet prior to and after the procedure; by the time she was ready to come home, I was due to arrive in a matter of days. Barbara reported that on her return the cat was subdued and unfriendly but not especially aggressive. I was relieved; I was also confident that with the infection gone and me present, all would eventually be well.

And at first, that seemed possible. When she’d left, Barbara had let Suki out, and I started calling her as soon as I emerged from the taxi. I didn’t have to wait long before she came bounding out of the underbrush like Lassie, rubbing against me, almost leaping into my arms. But as soon as we entered the house and she saw Honus, she began snarling. I quickly set her down; she glared at me with pure animal rage and bolted out the door.

She did not come in again until mealtime, when she scarfed her food, snarled at me, snarled at Honus, and bolted out again. When she came back in for breakfast, I tried to sweet-talk her, by which I mean I attempted to sit with her and tell her how much I loved her and wanted this to work out. But she would not sit with me, so instead I followed her around, futilely declaring my good intentions while she either ignored me or growled. When I tried to make her sit still and listen, she swiped at me and drew blood. Meanwhile Honus was delightful, playing with me and cuddling by day, sleeping close to me at night. It became easy for me to just about ignore Suki except to let her in and feed her, then let her out where she stayed all night.

One night, during a thunderstorm, my conscience woke; like many animals, Suki was afraid of storms, so I put my boots on, got an umbrella, and went out to call her. I found her sheltering under my neighbor’s car. For several moments I crouched there, entreating her to come in. She stayed put, hissing at me. After that night, I tried keeping her in again; she reacted by attacking me, actually charging me and swiping with her front paws — and sometimes she connected. Her fury was several times bigger than her body, and I was becoming angry in response — very angry. The last time she struck out at me, I got down on the floor and said to her, “If you hurt me, I will kill you. I don’t want to do that. But if you really hurt me, I am going to kill you.” She could not have understood my words, but I am sure she understood my message. She flattened her ears against her head and, pupils dilated, hissed with teeth fully exposed as if to say, “If I could, I would kill you right now” and then went for the door. I opened it for her.

Around this time, I called the vet and asked him if he thought there was anything I could do to improve the situation. He told me that the only way was to remove the kitten — or Suki. He said Suki had probably developed the tooth infection right around the time Honus arrived and that the stress of my leaving had likely made it much worse; he thought she had associated the increasingly terrible pain and the disruption of her home with the kitten and that there was no way to reverse that.

I had to choose between an enraged middle-aged cat who hated me versus an adorable kitten who loved me or at least acted that way. The more I thought about it, the more natural it seemed to … end the misery. I couldn’t believe what I was thinking of doing: taking Suki to the ASPCA, where she would almost certainly die. I remember saying to someone, “If a person acted toward me the way that Suki has, I wouldn’t tolerate them in my home either.” Of course the person said, “Yes, but you wouldn’t have them killed.” And I wouldn’t, not only because I couldn’t (at least not legally) but because for most people (and for me) to essentially kill a member of our own species is a profoundly wrong act that not many of us are going to commit just because we don’t like certain behavior.

But an animal is in another category. Since infancy, we are brought up to see them as less valuable than we are even if we love them; in that way we are very like … other animals. Animals generally prefer their own species. How often does an animal feel morally compelled to show a weaker species consideration? No natural predator hesitates, when hungry, to kill another species for food or, in the case of cats, for pleasure. Part of the reason we feel superior is our very real capacity to choose to act differently. But our connection with animals reminds us of that more fundamental, less moral way of being. As predator or prey, animals are always closer to the reality of killing than we are, and on a very subliminal level, their proximity brings us closer too.

None of that made what I was contemplating any less cruel. What pulled me back from the brink of this awful choice was not an appeal to abstract ethics. It was an appeal to my own well-being — which I’d somehow forgotten was linked to Suki’s. I told a close friend that I had just about made up my mind to take my old cat to the ASPCA for being too mean. She was silent for a long moment. She said, “I hope you reconsider. You’re really mad at Suki right now, but you love her. If you take her there and she’s put down, I don’t think you’re going to be able to live with yourself.”

As soon as she said it, I knew she was right; it was as if her words awakened me from a trance of ruthlessness. At first, I was not happy about it. My decision was made easier when Barbara said she would love to adopt Honus. Miserably, I removed his food dishes; miserably, I vacuumed his fur off the rug. When dinnertime came, I let Suki in. The house probably still reeked of Honus, and she didn’t behave very differently at first. But slowly she realized the intruder was gone. On our first evening, she didn’t demand to go outside; she didn’t sleep with me or show me any affection, but she didn’t hiss or snarl either. I didn’t try to pet her; I watched and waited to see what she would do.

The next evening I found out. She had just eaten and had not asked to go outside. I was sitting on the couch watching TV. For the first time in maybe two months, she jumped onto the couch with me. I said, “Hi, Suki.” She groomed herself for a few minutes. And then she languorously stretched her body and came into my lap. To my delight, she responded to my petting with unreserved purring. Our bodies synced and relaxed; she soon fell deeply asleep as I blissfully watched the tube. At one point some unexpected noise woke her with a start; she looked up at me with an expression of great relief. She then put her head back down, sighed, and stretched her forepaw out on my leg, gripping my pants with her claws as if to say, “Mine. All mine.” It was true. Honus was a lovely kitten, but Suki was my cat and I was her person. Regardless of who had more power, our well-being was inextricably linked. In some impossible-to-define psychic sense, we were, at that moment, equal.

Do cats experience grief? New research suggests they might

If a human or another animal close to them dies, does a cat grieve the loss?

That was the question a team of researchers from Oakland University in Michigan set out to answer when they surveyed hundreds of cat owners about their cat’s behavior after another cat or dog in the household passed away.

The data showed that cats exhibited behaviors associated with grief — such as eating and playing less — more often after the death of a fellow pet, suggesting they may in fact have been in mourning.

“It made me a little more optimistic that they are forming attachments with each other,” said Jennifer Vonk, a professor of psychology at Oakland University, who co-authored the study, published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science .

“It’s not that I want the cats to be sad,” Vonk went on, “[but] there is a part of us, I think, as humans that wants to think that if something happens to us our pets would miss us.”

When animals mourn: seeing that grief is not uniquely human.

Though animals from elephants to horses to dogs have been shown to express signs of grief, less is known about the emotional life of the domesticated house cat. Vonk said she knew of only one other study on grief in domestic cats.

For their research, Vonk and her coauthor, Brittany Greene, surveyed 412 cat caregivers about how their feline companion acted after another pet in the house died.

They found that, after the death of a fellow pet, cats on average sought more attention from their owners, spent more time alone, appeared to look for the deceased animal, ate less and slept more.

Vonk said they didn’t observe “huge changes,” but the behavior changes they did see mirrored those that had previously been observed in dogs, which have evolved in a more social way than cats.

“For me, the most compelling finding is that when cats were reported to change their behavior in ways that would be consistent with what we would expect for grief,” Vonk said, “it’s predicted by things like the length of time that the animals lived together or the amount of time that they had spent together engaged in various activities or the quality of their relationships.”

Vonk acknowledged that there are some caveats to the research. An owner may have been projecting their own feelings of sadness on their surviving cat when reporting their symptoms, or the cat may have been trying to console the grief-stricken human. (Cat owners who felt more grief themselves reported more grief in their surviving cats, researchers found.)

The cat subjects may also have been behaving differently in response to a new household dynamic with one fewer pet, she added.

The researchers said more studies in this area would be necessary before drawing any conclusions. But Vonk, a cat owner herself, said her and Greene’s data suggest that cats may experience emotions akin to grief and sadness in ways that weren’t previously known.

“It does make me think maybe it’s more likely than I thought before that cats do have those feelings,” she said.

Here is a good story: It’s 2003 and a childhood friend is stationed at Fort Bragg, in North Carolina—which will be renamed Fort Liberty in 2023—where she’s in the 82nd Airborne Division. She is done jumping out of planes for the day, heading off the base, when she hears meowing coming from a warehouse. Inside, she finds a stray cat, proud but mangy, and decides to take her home. The cat is pregnant. My friend e-mails me a photograph of the kittens, arranged on her lap, one surfing on her kneecap. She writes, “Don’t these remind you of your cats growing up?” She knows a target when she sees one.

A few weeks later, the kittens are loaded onto the back seat of a Jeep and driven north. Two are dropped off at my parents’ house, in White Plains, and one is dropped off with me at my studio apartment, on the Upper West Side. The family joke is that these are military-grade cats. Your tax dollars at work. No laser eyes, but they do fetch and come when you call them, and, if they puke, they do so on nonporous surfaces. Twenty-one years later, mine is the last one standing. Personally, I think there’s a lesson here about nurture, but I keep this thought to myself.

Since this story will continue, perhaps I should build up an immunity within a certain type of reader: Cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat cat. Cat. There. Now we can get on with it.

The cat is very sick, so a veterinarian whom I have never met is coming over to kill her. She arrives at 10 A.M. , which feels wrong. Murders and breakups, these are not interactions for God’s hours. On the phone the afternoon before, she tells me of her pastoral childhood in New Zealand. Her mother once put a cat down by feeding it Valium.

“Like, a local cat?”

“No, our cat. So, very local.”

This conversation happens in my living room because it feels disrespectful to conduct it in the bedroom, where the cat is resting on her spot, near the pillows. When we hang up, I walk over to the doorframe and lean on it. The cat lifts her head. She’s a gray tabby, but her shock-white belly has been my first sight in the morning for much of my adult life. After she’s gone, I will place wide objects on my nightstand to obstruct the view of the room when I open my eyes. Her emerald eyes, rimmed in black, are narrowed. Gummy. Surely, she is thinking nothing, except for: I feel like shit. She stretches her paws, which are commonly referred to as “snowcapped,” but our private joke is that I hold a paw between my fingers and say, “Ice-cream sandwich.” They’re all private jokes. It’s a cat.

“That was your executioner,” I tell her, although she does not understand English.

Though she did once type a perfect word while strolling across my keyboard: “poop.”

The vet has arrived at a highly controlled household. The apartment is ready for guests, or perhaps a proposal. There are roses in vases, cellophane still mashed in the trash. There are candles. There is a bundle of sage just in case some things are valid. There is my boyfriend, pressed against a wall in anticipatory horror. He has known the cat for three years, which is not nothing, but it’s also not as if I introduced them and now they hang out without me. On the floor is a hatbox from a hat shop in London. The hat, an expensive wool cloche that wound up costing me forty dollars per wear, has been removed. The box will serve as the cat’s final transport. Her blanket, her closest colleague, the one with all the institutional knowledge, is nested inside, along with a handwritten letter.

This part will be familiar to anyone who has had to put an animal down: It’s been six days since my initial correspondence with her regular vet, during which I fell on the sword of my own hysteria. A skipped meal—it’s probably nothing! Still, blood was taken. The results have not come back yet. I am now seventy-two hours into my career as a personal chef: warming, mixing, shaking, diluting, pinching, drizzling, sprinkling. I treat the bodega like a farmer’s market, making jaunts to buy cans of processed junk. The cat did this at eighteen (cancer) and thirteen (arbitrary rejection of dry food). So this worry, this belligerent kind of love, knows its way around. She will hear no explanations, be asked no questions. With babies, there’s a good chance of their speaking by twenty-one. Poop .

Cats are notoriously secretive when something is wrong. The something at hand is often a puzzle. Dogs are more apt to tell it straight: a failure of the heart, a tumor in the brain. Dogs gossip; cats know where the bodies are buried. Dogs are standup comedians. Cats are essayists. Should we decide this animal has been fatally ill for three weeks, not six days, we’re still talking about a mere fraction of her life. I once had lunch with a mohel, and when I suggested that circumcision was mutilation, to my surprise he agreed. He also told me that the day of the bris was meant to be a microcosm of a man’s life. A few moments of pain in twenty-four hours? May we all have such a life! I have been digging into his words: May we all have such a life!

The other conversation to which I cling is more recent. A college friend, now a vet, predicted what would happen. “You will make the decision to euthanize her and then, in between, there will be something positive,” he said. “The cat will purr or eat a bite of food and you will think you’re making a mistake. It will be bad. You are not making a mistake.”

It wasn’t food, it was a lick of cream, and it wasn’t bad, it was wretched. Even now, I can feel the pressure in my throat, the difficulty swallowing as I paced during those ethically fraught hours, holding my phone because where was the goddam blood work I could have stabbed the cat in the leg and bought a centrifuge by now. Watching this creature fumble in and out of a litter box, I could not come to a conclusion about what it meant. I don’t mean to suggest that I was stymied by emotion; I mean that I had lost the ability to apply opinion to evidence. I thought, Is this not my job as a writer? To see something and say something? Or am I only good for diatribes about airplane etiquette and cheese?

The phone vibrates: It’s her kidneys.

Hearing is thought to be the last sense to go in death. This is likely true of animals as well as humans. I keep it together for her, expressing my gratitude for all those years of witnessing. In the previous days, she leaned on my forearm while a breeze blew through the window, and I told her the story of us. I described the apartments we’d lived in, the men I’d dated, the time I came home drunk and turned the dead bolt to lock the door, but it wasn’t aligned and the door sprang open without my noticing. I woke the next morning to what sounded like my neighbor, calling my name from my kitchen. Because he was in my kitchen. That’s when I heard a distant howling and flew down five flights to find the cat huddled by the mailboxes. On the way back up to safety, another neighbor, a grouchy one, popped her head into the hall.

“Is that a cat?!”

No, it’s a bag of waffles I taught to meow.

So many dramas! Let us not speak of all the questionable modes of rousing—the flops on the head, the whacks to the face, the pointed release of noxious fumes. The supercut of missed jumps. The time I smacked her on the nose. (If this was some new trend in petting, she wasn’t a fan.) The time we saw a mouse and she looked at me like, “You gonna do something about that?” Or the time, during the cancer, when I boasted to a vet that my cousin’s cat had lived to be twenty-four. To which the vet replied, “You do realize there’s no genetic correlation between that cat and this cat.”

It’s all in the past, this life with her as the common denominator. Contrary to the popular idea that she is something I keep, she is the keeper, the database. Pet owners are shamed by the implication that we lack perspective, by the manufactured dichotomy whereby adults of legal age must choose which being they’d drop-kick off a cliff, a child or a pet. First of all, do you know how many people I know who’d answer “Both”? Six. Second of all, this weapon has no effect on pet owners. We need only glance at our creatures to feel sorry for those who don’t understand. When we put a leash on the videos, when we prevent ourselves from extolling the virtues of our pets in public, it’s not out of dignity. It’s out of fear that we’ll sell them too hard and someone will kidnap them.

But there is shame. It comes at the end and springs from the suspicion that, in being so greedy for unconditional love, we have made an awful mistake. We have recorded our lives on devices that will run out of power instead of paying proper attention ourselves. We outsourced too many of our quiet days. We also trusted that our pets knew who we were even when we weren’t so sure. And, if what they knew was “asshole,” they never let on.

I tell the cat that she can go. As if she needs my permission. Once the vet confirms it’s my breath that’s moving her on my lap, new orifices sprout on my face. How else to explain the sheer volume of wetness? This is the last chapter of the book. I signed up for this. Well, sort of. I did not adopt a cat. She fell into my lap. And now she has fallen back out. Gingerly, I move her into the hatbox, sweeping her tail around her. I stroke her legs. Sometimes, when I held her, I’d lightly bounce and rotate my body, a process known within the confines of the apartment as “machine-gun legs.”

The vet speaks in low tones. Her accent is soothing, maybe because I don’t hear it much. My sister, who’s had Crohn’s disease since high school, recently sent me off to my first colonoscopy with this sage advice: Whatever you drink with the medication, make sure it’s not your favorite, because you’ll never be able to swallow it again. I haven’t had to speak with another person from New Zealand yet.

The vet holds up a carrot-shaped catnip toy, softened by beatings. I can’t compute how it got into her hand or what she’s going to do with it. Knowing a separation was imminent, I threw out the cat’s accessories before the vet arrived. I must have missed the carrot.

“Do you want to put this in?”

“What?” I ask, sniffling.

“It looks well loved,” the vet says, admiring this piece of crap. “Do you want to put it in?”

The snobbery is clarifying. It comes from deep inside and pushes my personality out from the cave where it’s been hiding.

“It’s a toy,” I say.

The snobbery is also maladjusted.

“I mean, I wouldn’t put a boxed set of ‘The Wire’ in your coffin.”

Comedy is tragedy plus time. That’s the rule. But you don’t have to add time if you don’t have any. I start telling the carrot story as soon as that evening. I am not sleeping. (I make attempts with my head at the foot of the bed.) I speak to maybe two people a day, and even those people are subjected to the bit: Like, what kind of show do you think I’m running here, lady ? This is a classy affair! Is it? Or am I making it classless by calcifying it before its time? Stories can be bad habits. I use this one to deflect condolences. I am not great with them regarding human beings, so these ones are extra indigestible, tinged with pity. It’s ludicrous to expect anyone to miss a cat independent of the affection they feel for its owner, to recognize that this was not a cat but a person in a cat suit, to agree that the gap between what any cat would do and what your cat does is actually quite vast. If more than five people outside your household miss your cat, it wasn’t a household, it was a brothel. So I don’t want to talk about it. The problem is, I don’t want to talk about anything else.

Sometimes I add a bonus layer to the story, tossing in the coincidence that I put the cat down one day before her annual insurance policy renewed and the same week the company announced that, after forty-two years, it would cease offering many of its pet-insurance plans. What a gal. For all I know, the cat’s euthanasia claim is the last one the company paid out, especially since I had to submit the paperwork twice. The first time, “the invoice did not specify the name of the pet for which services were rendered.” I checked. I hadn’t left the box blank. I had put my name down instead.

In reality, the vet and I get along well. We move quickly past the coffin zinger. She offers to take a plaster paw-print mold but suspects I might not want that.

“What do people do with them?”

“I don’t know,” she says, as if she’s never given it any thought, which she probably hasn’t. “Keep it in their desk drawer? Maybe ornaments.”

To each her own. During the call with my college friend, he told me about the time an owner dropped off her cat for surgery and explained that the cat slept between her legs. So could he please put a pair of her underwear in the cage? The owner then produced a thong in a plastic bag, slapping it on the counter before she left. My reaction upon hearing this story was not that it was unreasonable. My reaction was that it was unreasonable that she didn’t stay. But a plaster paw print? I don’t think so.

I ask the vet to clip the cat’s two longest whiskers. Cats use their whiskers for balance and to know where they fit. I want a piece of her, but not in the fashion of one of our jokes, in which I hold her leg and say, “Rabbit’s foot.” The vet’s arms are full, so I open the door for her. I walk back into the torturously empty space of my apartment while my boyfriend waits in the hall. I put the whiskers in a box and touch the furniture that I have kept for too long. The walls look different. I curl up with my head on her spot until I feel only my own warmth.

I keep adding jokes to my repertoire: The only thing keeping me from burning down my apartment is I’m not a hundred per cent sure where to buy a can of gasoline. One night, I stay with a fancy friend who has a guest bedroom. Her espresso machine looks complicated. The four-dollar charge on my credit-card bill, from a coffee shop near her place, is one of many traces of a bad week. I hire a housecleaner who shows up in a baseball cap that reads “Wifey” in pink script. She surveys the situation and sighs.

“So dirty,” Wifey says, shaking her head at the floorboards.

It’s like a doctor telling you you’re overweight.

“When was the last time you had it cleaned?”

I raise an eyebrow. She doesn’t want to know, I don’t want to say.

“Years,” Wifey mumbles. “Ground in.”

Indeed, the years are ground in. Now whom will I ask, as I frantically lift piles of paper, “What did you do with my keys?” My “boss,” as my boyfriend calls her, never permitted me to close my bedroom door, and so it remains open. Getting into bed at night, I pat the mattress, though I know she won’t come. Yes, it’s all very sad. But how many stories does one get where one can say one did everything right?

A gift in life can be a problem in storytelling, especially when the story is about a pet. This is why I keep adding jokes. For texture. I’m trying to take my own advice. When I teach, I encourage students to find the second story. Tear up the floorboards of the first story and see what treasure lies beneath. This part they already know. They were not born yesterday, an administrative impossibility. But another tactic is to imagine the first story searching for its mate, for a wall off which to bounce. Fear not the unlikely clash. I’ve read solid essays that weave together, say, diabetes and tree bark. This second story will bring forth the larger story. It’s why people tell cat owners, “You want the first cat to be happy? Get a second cat.”

But I did not get a second cat. I got one cat.

There’s a way to view these additional stories as a premature apology. As if to say: A single strain of your life has no inherent value, but perhaps you could persuade people with two. Part of this is because the more we analyze a topic like pets, the more we fawn or protest, the less trustworthy we seem as thinkers. A cat essay? In this economy?

Just this once, I want to tell the story as a dog would. To tell it straight, for her. To make her the only story. Maybe I can leave the jokes in the grass, swim naked in the pool of a hard sell. Your pet dies; it feels like a secret you’ve been keeping might die with her. It feels serious. Who will know everything now? Who has the keys?

Lately, I have been trying to claw some of her back, piecing together a sensory collage. This can’t be healthy. Most people in my position avoid it. I have a half-dozen recordings of her purr. They are labelled “purr” for my own edification or “I live with a large hairy dove” for someone else’s. Whether I knew it or not, I have been preparing, taking note of the faint snapping sound of her blinking, the weight of her head in my palm, the fur that lifted and collapsed with each stroke as she plastered herself to my lap, the height of her back so I could remember where my hand used to rest after she vanished. I have no idea what her story was about me in return. But she knew she was safe. She knew her name. ♦

This letter concerns your firm’s marketing of unapproved new animal drugs, Green Magic and Bulldog Cartel Parvo Combat, for the treatment of diseases in animals in violation of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed your website at the internet address https://thetopdogpetstore.com/ in May 2024 and has determined that you offer these products for sale there.

Based on our review of your website, your products are drugs under section 201(g)(1) of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) [21 U.S.C. 321(g)(1)], because they are intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in animals and/or intended to affect the structure or any function of the body of an animal. For the reasons described below, these products are unapproved new animal drugs and introducing or delivering these products for introduction into interstate commerce is prohibited under section 301(a) of the FD&C Act [21 U.S.C. § 331(a)].

These products are new animal drug under section 201(v) of the FD&C Act, [21 U.S.C. 321(v)], because they are not generally recognized, among experts qualified by scientific training and experience to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of animal drugs, as safe and effective for use under the conditions prescribed, recommended, or suggested in the labeling. To be legally marketed, a new animal drug must have an approved new animal drug application, conditionally approved new animal drug application, or index listing under sections 512, 571, and 572 of the FD&C Act [21 U.S.C. § 360b, 360ccc, and 360ccc-1]. These products are not approved or index listed by FDA, and therefore, the products are unsafe within the meaning of section 512(a) of the FD&C Act, [21 U.S.C. § 360b(a)], and adulterated under section 501(a)(5) of the FD&C Act [21 U.S.C. § 351(a)(5)]. Also, this animal drug is misbranded under section 502(o) of the FD&C Act [21 U.S.C. § 352(o)] because it has not been drug listed with FDA. The introduction or delivery for introduction into interstate commerce of an adulterated or misbranded drug is prohibited under section 301(a) of the FD&C Act [21 U.S.C. § 331(a)].

This letter is not intended to be an all-inclusive statement of violations that may exist in connection with your products. You are responsible for investigating and determining the causes of any violations and for preventing their recurrence or the occurrence of other violations. It is your responsibility to ensure that your firm complies with all the requirements of federal law, including FDA regulations.

This letter notifies you of our concerns and provides you an opportunity to address them. Failure to address this matter may lead to legal action without further notice, including, without limitation, seizure and/or injunction.

Within fifteen (15) working days of receipt of this letter, please notify this office in writing of the specific steps you have taken to address any violations. Include an explanation of each step being taken to prevent the recurrence of violations, as well as copies of related documentation. If you cannot complete corrective action within fifteen (15) working days, state the reason for the delay and the time within which you will complete the correction. If you believe that your products are not in violation of the FD&C Act, include your reasoning and any supporting information for our consideration.

On the Cover of New York : The Ethics of Pet Ownership

The latest issue of New York Magazine features an exhaustive exploration of the ethics of pet ownership titled “Are We All Bad Pet Parents?” The package features Madeline Leung Coleman on whether we’re forcing our pets to live too long, Mary Gaitskill on considering euthanizing her cat for bad behavior, an anonymous account of how a woman’s relationship with her cat changed after having a baby, Rebecca Alter on the city-dog math of how big of a dog you can have in your apartment, Kelly Conaboy on whether we need a word besides owner to describe our relationship to our pets, and more.

In an introduction, the editors write, “The pandemic brought more animals into our homes, often for the first time in our adult lives. And as more of us became pet owners, some of us started to wonder about the whole enterprise. Were we really equipped to care for another species, particularly in a cramped apartment? Were we depriving the animals we love of their needs, wants, and a good life? Were we receiving more than we were giving?”

New York editorial director Gazelle Emami says that the idea for the package came out of a pitch meeting in which the theme was “big tricky feelings — things you think about but perhaps are afraid to voice. The question of whether we’re bad pet parents is something a lot of people think about in their daily lives in all sorts of big and small ways, yet getting people to talk about it still feels like a third rail. The package is organized around a series of questions, driven in part by writers’ personal anxieties and fixations. The goal is to question our standards of pet ownership and what a good life means for the animal and to challenge some of the norms we take for granted around pet care.”

For the cover photo series by Charlie Engman , four actors modeled for the two-day shoot. Prosthetic-makeup artist Emily Schubert and her team spent several hours applying foam-latex molds to each “pet” before tweezing strands of hair onto the masks to transform them. New York photography director Jody Quon says, “Our idea was to anthropomorphize the animals to help readers imagine what their lives as pets might feel like.”

Dolce & Gabbana launches a new perfume for dogs, but some vets and pet owners are skeptical

ROME (AP) — Fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has launched a new alcohol-free perfume for dogs called ‘Fefé’ in honor of Domenico Dolce ’s poodle, but not all vets and pet owners agree it’s safe or appropriate.

The perfume costs 99 euros ($108) for 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces) and has been certified suitable for animal use. It follows a Safe Pet Cosmetics protocol designed to ensure a degree of safety of cosmetic products for animals comparable to that required for humans, Dolce & Gabbana said.

“Through a compliance recognition to this protocol granted by Bureau Veritas Italia, participating companies demonstrate their sensitivity in creating products that ensure the safety and respect of the animal, in accordance with established standards,” the company said in the statement issued for the launch of the perfume.

Bureau Veritas Italia is a publicly held company that provides inspection, laboratory verification and certification services.

All of the dog owners consulted agree that the fragrance is “gentle and well accepted by their pets,” and veterinarians approve of the product, according to the company web page dedicated to ‘Fefé’, which cites performance reviews by veterinarians and customers.

But not all veterinarians agree on the use of perfumes for dogs, as they may interfere with the animal’s sense of smell and cover up bad odors that could be a symptom of diseases.

“Dogs recognize themselves by smells, they recognize a person by a smell,” said Federico Coccía, a veterinarian in Rome who holds a doctorate from the University of Teramo.

“When the dog arrives, he sees you, wags his tail, but first smells you and then recognizes you because you are stored in one of his ‘smell drawers.’ Therefore, this world of smells should not be changed,” Coccia added.

Coccia said becoming aware of an ongoing dermatological disease can be problematic if dogs’ natural odors are covered up. “In the case of sebaceous dermatitis, for instance, the smell somehow completes my diagnosis.”

“The smell of breath, the smell of earwax are disguised by the perfume. So, it could be a problem even for us vets,” Coccia said.

Among the enthusiastic users of pet fragrances are groomers who take care of the hair and aesthetics of dogs.

Aliof Rilova Tano, a dog groomer at Morgana Carpentieri’s La Boutique delle Birbe parlor in Rome, said that in general he is in favor of using fragrances for pets.

“Our dogs live with us, so a little dog at home on the couch next to us with a perfume is always pleasant,” he said.

Grooming customers often feel the same way, so much so that customer Mariarita Ricciardi said she is in favor of “anything that has to do with a natural scenting ... and that can also help the quality of the hair.”

However, there are also pet owners who would never use perfumes on their animals.

“Especially brand perfumes, it seems to be a very exaggerated process of humanization,” said Francesca Castelli, a dog-owner strolling in Rome’s Villa Borghese.
