Who this course is for
If you are fascinated by cognitive neuroscience and want to pursue a career in research, you may wish to consider doing a PhD after your undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
Before applying for a PhD, you need to decide on a topic. This might be something you have already developed an interest in one during your undergraduate or Master's degree. Alternatively, you may want to get some ideas by taking a look at the research conducted by our academic staff .
What this course will give you
The key benefit of studying cognitive neuroscience at UCL is the outstanding research environment to which students have access. This includes the many UCL academics who are world experts in their respective fields; the taught courses offered by these members of staff; a large number of visiting speakers and also numerous workshops, summer schools and locally organised conferences.
An additional reason to study cognitive neuroscience at the ICN is the high quality of fellow students that come from a range of different backgrounds. This creates a stimulating research environment.
The foundation of your career
Many graduating PhD students have gone on to postdoctoral positions in leading universities such as UCL, Cambridge and Oxford in the UK, and UCLA and the University of California, Berkeley in the USA. Others have gone on to work in industry and professional roles.
Employability
Completing a PhD demonstrates a high level of analytic, communication, and technical skills. These skills are valuable both within and outside academia.
PhD students at the ICN participate in peer-led forums with the opportunity to network with other students across UCL departments and present their work in a supportive environment. The ICN also hosts a weekly seminar series with prominent international speakers presenting cutting-edge research. PhD students are encouraged to attend the seminars and meet for informal discussion with the speakers.
Teaching and learning
PhD research involves a wide variety of teaching and learning methods, but ultimately your self-directed research activities will be key. You can expect to be supported in developing research skills by your supervisory team, as well as a Thesis Committee who will guide you through the PhD.
There are two key assessments during a PhD programme. The first is the MPhil-to-PhD upgrade which takes place mid-way through the programme. This involves presenting your initial research to a panel and discussing it with them. If the upgrade is successful, your status changes from being a MPhil to a PhD student. The second key assessment is the final PhD examination, which involves a viva examination where you discuss your research with relevant experts.
A PhD consists mostly of self-directed research, however you can expect to meet regularly with your supervisory team and participate in the equivalent of at least 10 days of training activities per year.

There is a wide range of technical assistance available when needed, as well as library and computing facilities.
UCL regulations require that initial registration as a research student is for an MPhil degree. If satisfactory progress is demonstrated a student's registration is 'upgraded' to PhD. As part of the programme students take a range of courses designed to equip them for research. In particular, they take a selection of research methods courses appropriate for different backgrounds, designed to help them develop key research skills, such as the ability to evaluate critically the literature in an area or to perform advanced statistical analyses.
The full-time PhD typically lasts for 3 years, including the time registered as an MPhil student, and if the thesis is not submitted within this time then students may register as Completing Research Students (CRS) for 1 additional year.
The part-time PhD typically lasts for 5 years, including the time registered as an MPhil student, and if the thesis is not submitted within this time then students may register as Completing Research Students (CRS) for 1 additional year.

Linguistics at Cambridge is unique in the UK in that study and research in theoretical and applied linguistics are integrated within in a single academic unit. We provide great variety and flexibility in course contents as well as subject-specific training and diversity of intellectual interactions.
The PhD in Computation, Cognition and Language is a PhD track for students who conduct basic and applied research in the computational study of language, communication, and cognition, in humans and machines. This research is interdisciplinary in nature and draws on methodology and insights from a range of disciplines that are now critical for the further development of language sciences, including (but not limited to) Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology and Neuroscience. A variety of PhD topics that fall within this remit are accepted. Our current primary areas of research are:
• natural language processing
• computational and corpus linguistics
• computational models of human language acquisition and processing
• information extraction, mining, and presentation
• multilingual technology
• educational and assistive technology
• text data technology for health
• computational digital humanities
• computational approaches to the analysis of speech
• digital forensic speech analysis
In British universities, the PhD is traditionally awarded solely on the basis of a thesis, a substantial piece of writing which reports original research into a closely defined area of enquiry. The completion of the PhD thesis is generally expected to take three to four years, and most funding is based on this assumption. It is also possible to take a part-time route, and the expected timeframe would be five to seven years.
While the PhD is not a taught course, students will benefit from the availability of courses and seminars offered both within the MMLL Faculty and by other departments concerned with language science in Cambridge (e.g. Computer Science and Technology, Education, Engineering, Psychology, MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit). All research students also benefit from a programme of professional training run at various levels within the University and enabling cross-disciplinary interactions. The programme includes seminars and workshops on e.g. giving conference papers, publishing, applications and interviews, teaching skills, and specialist linguistic training. If you wish, you are likely to be given the opportunity of gaining experience in small group teaching for colleges. There may also be opportunities to gain some experience in teaching in the Faculty.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, candidates will have acquired excellent skills, experience and knowledge to undertake postdoctoral work (research and teaching) or another related profession.
For Cambridge students applying to continue from the MPhil by Advanced Study to PhD, the minimum academic requirement is an overall distinction in the MPhil.
For Cambridge students applying to continue from the MPhil by Thesis to PhD, the usual academic requirement is a pass in the MPhil.
All applications are judged on their own merits and students must demonstrate their suitability to undertake doctoral level research.
The Postgraduate Virtual Open Day usually takes place at the end of October. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions to admissions staff and academics, explore the Colleges virtually, and to find out more about courses, the application process and funding opportunities. Visit the Postgraduate Open Day page for more details.

Cognitive science is the study of the ways in which information is acquired and used by humans, other living organisms, and also artificial cognitive systems. The CEU Department of Cognitive Science concentrates on social and biological aspects of human cognition: how learning, processing, and sharing information about and with others takes place, and how computational models of human cognition can be realized in the brain. Students and faculty undertake interdisciplinary research drawing on psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, mathematical modeling, linguistics, and the social sciences. The department focuses on four main areas of research: infant cognitive development, social cognition, cognition and economics, and the emergence and use of internal representations based on sensory perception. The department currently offers one doctoral program.

Doctoral Programme in Cognitive and Brain Sciences
Director: prof. Massimo Turatto Deputy-Director: prof. Massimiliano Zampini
Programme duration: 4 years
Doctoral Programme
The PhD in Cognitive and Brain Sciences is promoted by CIMeC, the Interdepartmental Mind/Brain Center of UniTrento. The training program is based on multi-disciplinary skills in the area of mind and brain sciences that characterize the teaching staff involved in the PhD. A fundamental resource are the laboratories, which offer the most advanced methods for the study of the neural correlates of cognitive functions (3T fMRI, EEG, MEG, TMS, NIRS), for the measurement of human and animal behavior (movement kinematics, eye movements , equipment for the collection of psychophysical data), for molecular neurobiology and neuroanatomy, for the collection of neurophysiological data and for the modeling of brain functioning mechanisms (neuroinformatics). In this context, PhD students can acquire high-level skills in specific research sectors, both basic and applied. Furthermore, the strong interdisciplinary format favors the development of innovative and frontier paths in the field of cognitive neuroscience through the integration of knowledge from different research areas but linked by a common scientific interest, the study of the nervous system, of mental processes and of behaviour. There are also seminar initiatives that enhance the educational potential of training definable as "traineeship", where doctoral students are called to play an active role in their research. The PhD lasts 4 years; the activities are carried out in English and require active participation. The training environment is enriched by the presence of numerous post-docs and by a large flow of researchers and visiting professors from Italy and abroad.

Study Cognitive Science in Germany: 16 Universities with 20 English Degree Programs
All important info for international students in germany (2024/2025).
Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary field concerning itself with of the mind and its processes, drawing from psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, anthropology, and computer science and artifical intelligence. Cognitive scientists study intelligence and behavior, particularly on how nervous systems process and synthesize information. Frequent areas of study include language, memory, perception, attention, emotion, and reasoning. With a degree from a German university, you could join this field and help work towards its goal of better understanding intelligence, and applying this understanding to be able to improve human quality of life and develop "intelligent" machines and devices.

The Department of Cognitive Science PhD program’s primary goal is to train a new generation of cognitive scientists who can meld multiple existing disciplines into a new, genuinely integrated science of the mind/brain.
A secondary goal is to train graduates who are competitive for positions in traditional disciplinary departments at research universities. Because many of the most exciting research developments recognized within the related traditional disciplines arise through interdisciplinary research, the training in cognitive science offered by our department can promote a graduate’s attractiveness as a candidate for positions in a variety of departments.
For example, a student who is studying language processing in normal and brain-damaged subjects, and is trained in the methods of both cognitive neuropsychology and neuroimaging, with a solid foundation in theoretical linguistics and additional coursework in psychology or neuroscience, is potentially employable in a number of departments. A student with in-depth training in theoretical phonology, a solid background in computational and psychological approaches to phonological research, and ancillary training in other branches of linguistics is well positioned to conduct state-of-the-art research and teaching valuable for both a linguistics department and a cognitive science program.
The training we offer in cognitive science is highly interdisciplinary, strongly theoretically oriented, and integrated to an extent only possible within a department of cognitive science.
Our Training
The interdisciplinary training provided to all PhD students includes:
- Cognitive psychology and neuropsychology
- Computational approaches to cognition
- Generative linguistics
- Philosophy of mind
- Cognitive neuroscience
- Teaching experience in a range of areas within cognitive science
- Coursework introducing the full range of formal methods used throughout cognitive science
- Computational analysis
- Computer modeling
- Empirical psychology
- Empirical neuroscience
- Linguistic analysis
- Brain imaging
- Philosophical analysis
- In-depth interdisciplinary training in an area of expertise, with ancillary preparation for a faculty position in a traditional discipline.
Research Experience
In addition, PhD students are provided extensive experience integrating the theory and methods of diverse cognitive sub-disciplines through specially designed integrative courses and regular seminars involving the entire department.
Our program can offer such a breadth and depth of training because, unlike departments in the allied disciplines, in a department of cognitive science, 100% of graduate training can be focused on cognition. Integrated training across the spectrum of cognitive methods allows students to emerge from graduate school as professional cognitive scientists.

Researchers receive $9.5M to study polyphenols' impact on cognitive health
- Download PDF Copy
UCLA Health researchers, in collaboration with researchers from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, have received $9.5 million award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with support from European funding agencies -; The Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Public Health Agency Health & Social Care (HSC) -; to study the effects of polyphenols on cognitive health and the brain-gut microbiome system.
The proposal, named MAEVE, stands for "Microbiota mediated flavonoid metabolites for cognitive health."
In this interdisciplinary and multicenter study funded through the Tripartite US-Ireland Research & Development Partnership Program, researchers will investigate the impact of dietary polyphenol supplements on 300 older adults at-risk for Alzheimer's disease. Polyphenols -; a key component of Mediterranean diets and found in berries, grapes, green tea, and cocoa -; may delay cognitive decline by preserving brain function and structure through gut microbiome metabolites by altering the physiology of the host's secondary bile acids, highlighting their potential role in Alzheimer's disease prevention.
It's a multicenter, longitudinal, and translational intervention study designed so that we can look at the mechanisms and pathways involved in cognitive decline. We're looking at multiple markers such as cognitive functioning, brain structure and function, the microbiome and microbial polyphenol metabolites, inflammatory markers like interleukins, and Alzheimer's disease-specific plasma markers such as tau proteins ptau181 and ptau217." Aparna Church, PhD, co-director of the UCLA Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center and principal investigator
In this five-year study, Church and her co-investigators will explore the relationship between polyphenols, cognitive function, and brain health through four project aims in 50+ year old adults with enhanced risk for Alzheimer's disease. First, the researchers will assess the protective effects of dietary polyphenol supplementation on brain (using multimodal MRI) and cognitive parameters. Then, they will analyze microbiome metabolites, inflammatory markers, and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers related to polyphenol intake. Afterwards, they will use bioinformatics and machine learning approaches to explore the associations between polyphenol intake and gut microbial metabolites, inflammatory and Alzheimer's disease markers, brain parameters, and cognitive function. Finally, researchers will use a reverse translational approach whereby stool transplants from high-risk individuals on the polyphenol diet supplementation into mouse models will be conducted to better understand the underlying mechanisms.
"We're hoping to better understand the role of dietary polyphenols in slowing the development of cognitive decline and how this is all influenced by the brain and gut microbiome," Church said. "This will help us better understand the ameliorative properties of a polyphenol-rich diet and whether [we need] diet interventions and regimes to delay the onset and progression of cognitive decline."
