Doing discourse analysis in the digital age is challenging because digitally mediated texts which are more interactive, intertextual, and heteroglossic do not share the same texture with traditional texts ( Jones et al. 2015). This poses one of the most pressing issues, that is, how traditional analytical tools and approaches can be adapted and progressed to suit digital discourse analysis (DDA). Additionally, new digital tools are constantly emerging, and each one is changing the context, text, and interaction of today’s real-world communication slightly ( Hafner 2018). Prescriptive ‘one-size-fits-all’ rules without considering the continuous changes may go nowhere in the field of DDA. These facts together call for more attention from the academia to be spared to methodological questions and issues which remain far from resolved. A timely contribution, Research Methods for Digital Discourse Analysis edited by Camilla Vásquez is the first book-length treatment of research methods for DDA. The contributors of this volume have pulled back the curtain of their own research projects in an attempt to show the complicated procedures, normally a time-consuming and multi-stage task that has to be condensed into a few brief paragraphs in the final publication (pp. 3–4). In this sense, this volume aims to be a helpful resource for researchers as it empowers them to pursue their own clever solutions to new research problems with an overview of the methodology of DDA (p. 3).

Research Methods for Digital Discourse Analysis
Publisher description.
Introducing the key questions and challenges faced by the researcher of digital discourse, this book provides an overview of the different methodological dimensions associated with this type of research. Bringing together a team of experts, chapters guide students and novice researchers through how to conduct rigorous, accurate, and ethical research with data from a wide range of online platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and online dating apps. Research Methods for Digital Discourse Analysis focuses on the key issues that any digital discourse analyst must consider, before tackling more specific topics and approaches, including how to work with multilingual or multimodal data. Emphasizing concrete, practical advice and illustrated with plentiful examples from research studies, each chapter introduces a new research dimension for consideration, briefly exploring how other discourse analysts have approached the topic before using an in-depth case study to highlight the main challenges and provide guidance on methodological decision-making. Supported by a range of pedagogical tools, including discussion questions and annotated further-reading lists, this book is an essential resource for students and any researcher new to analyzing digital discourse.

Digital Discourse Analysis
Title: Research Methods for Digital Discourse Analysis
Instructor: Dr. Camilla Vásquez (University of South Florida)
Friday, September 17, 2021, 2pm-5pm (EST)
The changes brought on by digital technology over the last two decades have profoundly altered the ways that most of us live our lives. Scholars of digital discourse believe that this ever-increasing digitization of daily life calls for increasing analytic attention to how we, as humans, both construct – and are constructed by – all of the digital texts that we produce, consume, and interact with. Digital discourse analytic research is driven by our curiosity to better understand how our contemporary realities are shaped by and reflected in, online texts and digital practices alike. In this workshop, we will discuss key methodological considerations involved in carrying out a discourse analytic project, from start to finish. Topics to include the following:
- Refining your focus: identifying an original topic and crafting a literature review from diverse disciplinary sources.
- Data sampling: why bigger may not always be better.
- Finding the right framework: diverse approaches to (digital) discourse analysis.
- Beyond tools: organizing and managing your dataset, creating a system that works best for you.
- Research ethics: developing an informed, contextualized and culturally appropriate approach.
- The best venues for your work: doing your homework and researching your audience.

This new edition is updated throughout with new examples and a new chapter on multimodal discourse analysis, demonstrating how Gee's approach can be applied to texts that combine language with other modes of communication like images or video. Overall, the book equips readers with a robust toolkit for systematically analyzing discourse.
Using word embeddings and linguistic models trained on Wikipedia, a "pertinence score" was developed to measure the relevance of political discourse in contexts such as the economy and health. The method was applied to the 2018 Colombian presidential election, revealing significant differences in thematic pertinence between candidates.
