ICMR Short Term Studentship (STS) Program 2020 for Medical Students in India (Up to Rs. 10,000)

Applications for the ICMR Short Term Studentship (STS) Program 2020 are now open. The ICMR Short Term Studentships (STS) are one of the most sought after and prestigious short term research program for the undergraduate medical and dental students.
Every year thousands of MBBS students from across India apply for this fellowship in order to acquaint themselves with the basics of biomedical research. The core subjects in which the STS fellowship will be awarded includes internal medicine, surgery, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, molecular medicine, Community medicine, pediatrics among others.
ICMR initiated the Short Term Studentship (STS) Program in order to promote interest and aptitude for research among medical undergraduates to serve as an incentive for them to take research as a career in the future. The fellowship familiarizes undergraduate medical students with research methodology and techniques.
- The value of the studentship is Rs. 10,000/- per month for two months’ duration (Rs. 20,000/- only) and is meant to be a stipend for the student.
Eligibility
- Open only to MBBS/BDS students studying in Medical/Dental colleges recognized by MCI/DCI, before they appear in their final exams and therefore, interns/ PG students are not eligible to apply. Students of paramedical/non-medical courses may not apply.
- The student must carry out the research in his/ her own medical/dental college under the guide who is employed in the medical college as a faculty. Only permanent full time faculty members working in any of the Department of the Medical/Dental College where the student is enrolled can act as the guide. Part time consultants/visiting faculty/ residents/ Tutors/ Pool officers/ PG students cannot be the guide.
- Only one student will be allowed to work under one guide. Two or more students are not permitted to work on same topic together. Proposals submitted on the same topic by different students are liable to be rejected outright. The student may have one Guide and other Co-Guides. However, ICMR will recognize only ONE main Guide for all purposes.
- Indian National students who are studying in recognised medical/dental colleges of India can apply. Students who are holding OCI cards/ PIO cards/ NRI’s studying in Indian medical/dental college can also apply and copy of the OCI/ PIO/ NRI card must be submitted. Students from foreign medical/dental colleges are not eligible for this program.

6. Selected candidates should pay the fees towards their internship/dissertation as soon as they join in their respective departments.
7. Upon successful completion of the assigned work, the candidates will receive a completion Certificate from the Supervisor and the Director, ICMR – NIRT.
8. In case of dissertation work, submission of a copy of the completed thesis is required.
9. Selected candidates are bound to respect the confidentiality of information that they collect or are exposed to at ICMR-NIRT. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from ICMR-NIRT without the explicit written authorization of the Supervisor and the Director, ICMR-NIRT.
10. Although not considered a staff member of ICMR-NIRT, selected candidates shall follow the rules and regulations of ICMR-NIRT. The candidates will not be entitled to the privileges accorded to the officials and staff members of ICMR-NIRT.
11. Candidates should make their arrangements for accommodation, travel and living expenses. ICMR - NIRT WILL NOT arrange for the same.
12. The ICMR-NIRT Internship/Dissertation Programme does not entail any form of employment in the institute
13. ICMR-NIRT accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship/dissertation; therefore, candidates must carry adequate responsibilities of their medical conditions.

IIT Delhi launches MS (Research) Program in ‘Healthcare Technology’, course commences in Jan 2025

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) has launched an exclusive Master of Science (Research) program in ‘Healthcare Technology’.
The new program, which commences in January 2025, has been specifically designed for medical and allied clinical professionals. It integrates the principles of medicine with engineering disciplines, thereby fostering deep-tech innovations in healthcare.
Interested candidates can apply for the program by October 25, 2024, through this direct link .
IIT Delhi said in a press statement that the MS (Research) in Healthcare Technology is unique for its highly project-centric approach that ensures students gain hands-on experience with real-world applications.

Students participating in the program will benefit from clinical and industrial immersion with leading institutes and corporations which will provide them with a comprehensive understanding of medical and technological landscapes,
Key features of the program:
Flexibility: MS (Research) in Healthcare Technology is a flexible program that allows medical professionals to continue their clinical practice while pursuing their studies.
Skill training: The program has been designed with core subjects and laboratory courses to provide skills required by the healthcare industry along with training to take up scientific research either for higher studies or in Industry and clinical laboratories.

Fellowships and remunerations: Participants are supported by high-value fellowships and remunerations that are comparable to salaries and stipends available for medical and allied discipline graduates at entry-level positions.
Offer to pursue a Ph.D: Participants will also be offered a seamless transition to pursue a Ph.D. at IIT Delhi, in line with the program’s commitment to fostering long-term research and innovation in the biomedical field.
Prof Neetu Singh, Head of CBME at IIT Delhi, informed that the program will provide the much-needed intermediate degree and training for filling the gap between bachelor's as well as Master’s and doctoral degrees needed to become an independent researcher for the medical and allied professionals.
She said, “It will bring the medical and allied graduates to scientific research in leading academic institutions. Through this program, IIT Delhi envisions producing globally competitive human resources that can not only uplift the start-up culture and industrial output but will also fuel high-quality scientific research related to biomedical science and engineering.”

Prof. Naresh Bhatnagar, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Delhi and a medical device expert highlighted that the program is in sync with many national missions, and has been designed to align with the objectives and priorities of India in healthcare sector.
He pointed out that the program and the trainees can impact healthcare Industry in a big way, adding that the program will provide unique opportunities for medical graduates and bring them in the forefront of technology development and innovation.
Students can engage in cutting-edge research projects in areas such as precision medicine, biomaterials, medical implants, medical imaging, rehabilitation, biomimetics models, and translational medicine.
Moreover, the curriculum has been designed to encourage critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of research methodologies. It will also focus on entrepreneurship skill development which will aid medical graduates to be intellectually equipped to start their own entrepreneurial journey.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is hosting the research internship program for MBBS and MPH students to facilitate research exposure and help develop future physician scientists in the country. Under this program, the selected students will get an opportunity to work under the supervision of a faculty at IISc, Bengaluru campus for a period of 1 to 2 months.
Who can apply?
- MBBS students: Students registered at an MCI / NMC recognized medical school in India who are in their Phase 3 – part 2 are eligible to apply. Those who will be completing their Phase 3 – part 1 before May 2024 are also eligible to apply. Students who have completed their MBBS course and are in MBBS internship (House surgency/surgeonship) are NOT eligible to apply.
- MPH students: Students who have completed / will complete their 1 st year MPH degree before May 2024 at a recognized institute in India are eligible to apply.
- Students who have availed the internship earlier are NOT eligible to apply under this program.
- Latest transcripts/Marks sheet will be checked before the start of the internship.
- The internship is for 4 weeks (minimum) to 8 weeks (maximum) .
- Selected students may avail this opportunity only once between May & December 2024 in consultation with IISc faculty.
- Selected candidates will be provided a stipend of INR 35000 (consolidated) .
- Candidates will NOT be provided hostel accommodation.
- A certificate of participation will be awarded after the successful completion of the program.

Important notes:
- Fill all the mandatory sections in the Google form. .
- Faculty/Laboratory preference: Select faculty based on your research interests in the google form. To identify the participating IISc faculty in the program, visit the MBBS / MPH supervisors page.
- Statement of Intent (200 words max): The Statement of Intent will be used to evaluate the applicant for admission into the internship program. You may use this section to provide insights into your academic record, career goals, and describe how the internship will benefit your aspirations.
- Support letter: The applicant must submit a letter of support from the Registrar/Dean/Principal of their institution on the official letterhead in the prescribed format given below (should be less than 10 MB).

- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- The supervisors preferred by the applicants will evaluate the respective applications for the selection of interns for their lab.
- Only selected candidates for the internship program will be informed through email tentatively by the first week of May 2024. The list of selected students will also be put up on the ORG website.

India is a country which contains hundreds of medical colleges and thousands of medical students graduating each year. A fair number of students actively involve themselves in research at a local or national or even international level. INFORMER, The Forum for Medical Students' Research, India is a step towards bringing those interested in research to a common platform.
INFORMER is an all India medical students' body aimed at advocacy and promotion of research amongst undergraduate medical students and to encourage them to present their research work at a national level by means of the annual conference organized by the forum. It is an institution comprising of a group of medical students who attempt to keep the spirit of research alive among the student community. INFORMER was formed in 2009 in response to there being a lack of an advocate for undergraduate medical students in the country. Over the past 3 years, we have diversified base of activities which now include our annual flagship conference (Medicon), an online journal club,collaborative research projects, a research project mentoring forum, workshops which promote evidence-based medicine,medical quizzes, case presentation conferences etc.
