Open Transcript in the left-hand toolbar and select "Trim with Transcript." From there, select the audio file you want to transcribe and click on Generate Transcript.

I am disabled and I’ve been looking for this exact technology for at least two years because I can’t type anymore. A lot of these transcriptions don’t work, but this one does. I’ve probably done 60 hours of transcribing audio memos checks and with with very few exceptions it was Word for Word perfect. And when you didn’t get the word right it was because I was mumbling, or what have you.

This converted my rambling voice memos directly into text for use in a word document. My audio quality was low: I recorded with my iPhone in my lap while driving on the highway so there is lots of background noise. Still, the imperfections in text are all from me stammering. Actually, the app cut out lots of ums and repeated words improving what I said. It still requires editing and correcting - mostly formatting - but really couldnt be improved much at all. This is mature technology. Also, the software interface is top notch, like google or even better.

Instructions for web app on desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux OS)

Requirements: the latest version of the Google Chrome [↗] browser (other browsers are not supported).

1. Connect a high-quality microphone to your computer.

2. Make sure your microphone is set as the default recording device on your browser.

To go directly to microphone's settings paste the line below into Chrome's URL bar.

chrome://settings/content/microphone

To capture speech from video/audio content on the web or from a file stored on your device, select 'Stereo Mix' as the default audio input.

3. Select the language you would like to speak (Click the button on the top right corner).

4. Click the "microphone" button. Chrome browser will request your permission to access your microphone. Choose "allow".

5. You can start dictating!

Instructions for the web app on a mobile and for the android app

Requirements: - Google app [↗] installed on your Android device. - Any of the supported browsers if you choose to use the web app.

Supported android browsers (not a full list): Chrome browser (recommended), Edge, Opera, Brave, Vivaldi.

1. Tap the button with the language name (on a web app) or language code (on android app) on the top right corner to select your language.

2. Tap the microphone button. The SpeechTexter app will ask for permission to record audio. Choose 'allow' to enable microphone access.

3. You can start dictating!

Common problems on a desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux OS)

Error: 'speechtexter cannot access your microphone'..

Please give permission to access your microphone.

Click on the "padlock" icon next to the URL bar, find the "microphone" option, and choose "allow".

Error: 'No speech was detected. Please try again'.

If you get this error while you are speaking, make sure your microphone is set as the default recording device on your browser [see step 2].

If you're using a headset, make sure the mute switch on the cord is off.

Error: 'Network error'

The internet connection is poor. Please try again later.

The result won't transfer to the "editor".

The result confidence is not high enough or there is a background noise. An accumulation of long text in the buffer can also make the engine stop responding, please make some pauses in the speech.

The results are wrong.

Please speak loudly and clearly. Speaking clearly and consistently will help the software accurately recognize your words.

Reduce background noise. Background noise from fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, etc. can drop the accuracy significantly. Try to reduce background noise as much as possible.

Speak directly into the microphone. Speaking directly into the microphone enhances the accuracy of the software. Avoid speaking too far away from the microphone.

Speak in complete sentences. Speaking in complete sentences will help the software better recognize the context of your words.

Can I upload an audio file and get the transcription?

No, this feature is not available.

How do I transcribe an audio (video) file on my PC or from the web?

Playback your file in any player and hit the 'mic' button on the SpeechTexter website to start capturing the speech. For better results select "Stereo Mix" as the default recording device on your browser, if you are accessing SpeechTexter and the file from the same device.

I don't see the "Stereo mix" option (Windows OS)

"Stereo Mix" might be hidden or it's not supported by your system. If you are a Windows user go to 'Control panel' → Hardware and Sound → Sound → 'Recording' tab. Right-click on a blank area in the pane and make sure both "View Disabled Devices" and "View Disconnected Devices" options are checked. If "Stereo Mix" appears, you can enable it by right clicking on it and choosing 'enable'. If "Stereo Mix" hasn't appeared, it means it's not supported by your system. You can try using a third-party program such as "Virtual Audio Cable" or "VB-Audio Virtual Cable" to create a virtual audio device that includes "Stereo Mix" functionality.

How to use the voice commands list?

The voice commands list allows you to insert the punctuation, some text, or run some preset functions using only your voice. On the first column you enter your voice command. On the second column you enter a punctuation mark or a function. Voice commands are case-sensitive. Available functions: #newparagraph (add a new paragraph), #undo (undo the last change), #redo (redo the last change)

To use the function above make a pause in your speech until all previous dictated speech appears in your note, then say "insert a new paragraph" and wait for the command execution.

Found a mistake in the voice commands list or want to suggest an update? Follow the steps below:

• Navigate to the voice commands list [↑] on this website.
• Click on the edit button to update or add new punctuation marks you think other users might find useful in your language.
• Click on the "Export" button located above the voice commands list to save your list in JSON format to your device.

Next, send us your file as an attachment via email. You can find the email address at the bottom of the page. Feel free to include a brief description of the mistake or the updates you're suggesting in the email body.

Can I prevent my custom voice commands from disappearing after closing the browser?

SpeechTexter by default saves your data inside your browser's cache. If your browsers clears the cache your data will be deleted. However, you can export your custom voice commands to your device and import them when you need them by clicking the corresponding buttons above the list. SpeechTexter is using JSON format to store your voice commands. You can create a .txt file in this format on your device and then import it into SpeechTexter. An example of JSON format is shown below:

I lost my dictated work after closing the browser.

SpeechTexter doesn't store any text that you dictate. Please use the "autosave" option or click the "download" button (recommended). The "autosave" option will try to store your work inside your browser's cache, where it will remain until you switch the "text autosave" option off, clear the cache manually, or if your browser clears the cache on exit.

Where does SpeechTexter store the saved files?

Version 1.5 and above stores the files in the internal memory.

Version 1.4.9 and below stores the files inside the "SpeechTexter" folder at the root directory of your device.

After updating the app from version 1.x.x to version 2.x.x my files have disappeared

As a result of recent updates, the Android operating system has implemented restrictions that prevent users from accessing folders within the Android root directory, including SpeechTexter's folder. However, your old files can still be imported manually by selecting the "import" button within the Speechtexter application.

You have to speak it to believe it; ChatGPT’s fantastic speech-to-text function, that is. It’s proved to be far smoother and more precise than some of the most established voice-to-text apps.

Google’s voice typing is a tool I’ve used on and off for years. It comes with the SwiftKey keyboard app and Google’s own Gboard keyboard for mobile phones. It was good for a time—above average, in fact—but not anymore. ChatGPT has leaped ahead of the competition, and the results are slick.

If you’ve ever used Google’s voice typing, you will know how awkward it is to say “comma” or “period” out loud each time you want to add punctuation to your text. In ChatGPT, there’s no need. You can speak as naturally as if you’re having a chat with your friend, and it will effortlessly add punctuation where you would expect it to go.

This makes a huge difference. Take this sentence, for example: “I want to go to the supermarket and buy apples, oranges, watermelon, pears, and cherries.” To dictate it using Google’s voice typing, you would need to say “...apples comma oranges comma watermelon comma pears comma and cherries.” Repeating the word “comma” five times is clunky and unnatural.

ChatGPT does an incredible job of converting speech to text thanks to WhisperAI, an advanced neural network. OpenAI released it as an open-source model aimed at people wanting to develop this technology into useful applications. Which brings us to a key sticking point. ChatGPT’s speech-to-text function is not yet integrated into something like a voice typing keyboard.

Despite this, I have begun using it all the time in my workflow. Even though Google’s voice typing is easily accessible from my keyboard, I end up wasting a lot of time fixing its mistakes. At one point, I started speaking in short fragments—think robocalls and computerized speech—to help it pick up my speech better.

That’s why I am happily using ChatGPT’s speech-to-text with a small workaround. In the end, it’s going to save me far more time and effort, besides letting me talk naturally.

ChatGPT is available on Android , iPhone , and macOS (M1 and later).

Those using Windows computers can expect a desktop app for ChatGPT in late 2024.

I write notes for my articles using pen and paper. This is, ironically, a very low-tech approach for a tech writer! While I enjoy it, eventually I need to get those words into a digital format if they are going to be of any use to me.

My preferred place to transfer my ideas to is a note-taking app. Google Keep, for example, is good because it automatically syncs your notes online and between devices. Or there’s Obsidian, my new favorite way to organize my thoughts into long-term storage. In the long run, it’s best to aim for a note-taking app that works on any device for added convenience.

My process is simple. Open ChatGPT and hit the microphone button, then start speaking. After that, press stop to convert the audio to text. Finally, copy the text and paste it into a note-taking app.

At my desktop, I follow the same process. The app looks nearly identical to the mobile version, so you simply need to press the microphone button to start recording, then press the tick button when you’re done. After this, you can copy the text to where it needs to go, such as a Word document or an email.

Sometimes it’s good to have a record of your transcription directly in ChatGPT. In that case, you can add the line, “Do not comment:” immediately before the transcribed text, then hit enter to add it to ChatGPT’s conversation feed. This stops ChatGPT from replying with a long-winded answer, with the added benefit of maintaining a record of your transcriptions.

There are plenty of things you can do with ChatGPT besides converting speech to text, making it a nice multipurpose app to have on hand.

It won’t be long before this speech-to-text AI model makes its way into voice typing apps or transcription tools. Until then, you can use ChatGPT to produce clean and accurate transcriptions for spots of note-taking, brainstorming, or dictation.

Efficient and Reliable

it cọmes to converting spoken words into text. The interface is simple to navigate, and I appreciate the robust features offered.

I was really considering upgrading bc I like this app. It does a good job transcribing - accuracy is higher than others I’ve tried. Speaker detection is just ok. I like the ability to edit the text, create folders, and so much more. There is a lot to like about the app. Having said that, I uploaded 2 audio files as my testers to see how I would like the app. One is approximately 54 SECONDS - a very short conversation between 2 people meant to see how well voices would be distinguished. The other is a lecture and is about 6 MINUTES long. BUT when I went to my account settings to look at upgrade options, I noticed it shows that my free account has used 172 of the 180 free minutes of transcription!!!! I haven’t deleted anything or used it for more than testing the 2 audio files totaling under 10 minutes! Very shady. I will not be upgrading.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Hate Speech Detection

Researchers are finding innovative ways to use artificial intelligence (AI) to address various challenges. One example is using AI for hate speech detection on social media. This could help moderate the large volume of interactions people have, ideally reducing the negative effects on mental health for users. Using explainable artificial intelligence, MDPI authors test whether this is plausible.

What is explainable artificial intelligence?

Most AI tools are black box systems, meaning they provide outputs without giving explanations about how it produces them. This means users are restricted from gaining any understanding of how certain AI tools produce their outputs, sometimes even those who created the tools .

In contrast, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods provide explanations about why it produces certain outputs and how it does them. Advocates for XAI tend to cite two main benefits:

• Transparency: XAI helps users validate whether outputs are produced fairly and accurately. This can help build trust in AI tools.
• Collaboration: XAI can be supported by human reasoning to further tweak algorithms and increase the potential uses for the tools.

In fields like medicine or law, where the outputs have very serious and important consequences, these two benefits are vital.

Social media and mental health

Social media enables us to connect with people anywhere in the world at any time. People share their social lives, post their creative work, and come together for social causes.

However, the negative mental health effects of social media are being increasingly recognised. Effects include the following:

• Depression.
• Decrease in attention span.
• Sleep disturbance.

Recommendations on how to address these issues tend to revolve around making lifestyle changes and taking breaks from social media .

Hate speech on social media

Hate speech is rife on social media . Detecting it is difficult, however, due to many interactions online being grammatically incorrect, the use of slang terms or context-specific phrases, and the sheer volume of text on social media being generated at any moment.

The United Nations defines hate speech as the following:

Any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor.

Hate speech can also be conveyed through images, memes, and symbols, which further complicates detecting it. Preventing it is a complicated issue, as it is influenced by complex, constantly shifting emotional, political, and social factors.

Hence, MDPI authors have attempted to use explainable artificial intelligence to detect hate speech on social media platforms.

Detecting hate speech using explainable artificial intelligence

An Editor’s Choice article in Algorithms explores the literature on using XAI for hate speech detection on social media. The authors found that hate speech detection is being explored using different AI approaches, but not using XAI specifically. They outline the goals of their study:

The main goal and the intended contribution of this paper are interpretating and explaining decisions made by complex artificial intelligence (AI) models to understand their decision-making process in hate speech detection.

The paper’s primary aim, then, is not only detecting hate speech but understanding how AI tools can do this to further improve them.

Training explainable artificial intelligence tools

The authors used two datasets. The first is the Google Jigsaw dataset, which includes user discussions from English Wikipedia, and the second is the HateXplain dataset, which includes over 20,000 examples of hateful, offensive, and normal text from Twitter and Gab.A key step is cleaning the data. This involves removing any incorrect or inconsistent information, improving data quality, and correcting any structural errors. Then, they performed a series of other steps that enable the tools to process and sort the information in the datasets, including converting the data into numbers.

This was all in preparation for the main goal of the article: understanding how different models detect hate speech.

Can XAI tools detect hate speech?

Overall, the authors tested the accuracy, precision, and F1 score for the different models, finding high accuracies:

• Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) had the highest accuracy at 97.6%.
• Multinomial Naïve Bayes followed behind with an accuracy of 96%.

Alongside this, the bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) models, which are machine learning frameworks designed to analyse the context and meaning of language, performed well when paired with other models:

• BERT + Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) achieved an accuracy of 93.55%.
• BERT + Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) achieved an accuracy of 93.67%.

These results demonstrate that AI tools have a lot of potential to be used for hate speech detection on social media, with accuracies over 90%. But what about their explainability?

How explainable are the AI tools?

The AI tools output a number which indicates the probability that the text is hateful or not. The XAI tools reveal how much weight each word in the text has in the number depicting the probability that it is hate speech. The predictions are counted as matches if any of the word predictions overlap with the rationales annotated by humans.

Where the BERT tools excelled was in terms of their explainability. For these, the authors found that there was good performance overall in terms of ERASER, which refers to evaluating rationales and simple English reasoning. This is the benchmark for measuring the explainability of AI models.

Using XAI tools and understanding how they achieve their outputs allows users to ensure the tools work as intended and are not achieving the desired outputs in incorrect ways. The latter could lead to the tools working on initial datasets and then failing to function correctly when implemented on live data.

Furthermore, since hate speech detection can have serious consequences, understanding the tools and ensuring they work correctly will only benefit users on social media platforms and ideally reduce the negative mental health effects of them.

Tackling hate speech online using XAI

Social media has a range of benefits and negative consequences. Hate speech can spread online and impact individuals or groups of people, with effects extending outside of online spaces.

AI tools are being implemented in hate speech detection, but often not using explainable artificial intelligence. By using XAI, these tools can be implemented more efficiently and also transparently, to help build trust in their use.
