Examples: Healthcare Dissertation & Theses

While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a healthcare-related research topic, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together.

Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various healthcare-related degree programs to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

  • Improving Follow-Up Care for Homeless Populations in North County San Diego (Sanchez, 2021)
  • On the Incentives of Medicare’s Hospital Reimbursement and an Examination of Exchangeability (Elzinga, 2016)
  • Managing the healthcare crisis: the career narratives of nurses (Krueger, 2021)
  • Methods for preventing central line-associated bloodstream infection in pediatric haematology-oncology patients: A systematic literature review (Balkan, 2020)
  • Farms in Healthcare: Enhancing Knowledge, Sharing, and Collaboration (Garramone, 2019)
  • When machine learning meets healthcare: towards knowledge incorporation in multimodal healthcare analytics (Yuan, 2020)
  • Integrated behavioural healthcare: The future of rural mental health (Fox, 2019)
  • Healthcare service use patterns among autistic adults: A systematic review with narrative synthesis (Gilmore, 2021)
  • Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Combatting Burnout and Compassionate Fatigue among Mental Health Caregivers (Lundquist, 2022)
  • Transgender and gender-diverse people’s perceptions of gender-inclusive healthcare access and associated hope for the future (Wille, 2021)
  • Efficient Neural Network Synthesis and Its Application in Smart Healthcare (Hassantabar, 2022)
  • The Experience of Female Veterans and Health-Seeking Behaviors (Switzer, 2022)
  • Machine learning applications towards risk prediction and cost forecasting in healthcare (Singh, 2022)
  • Does Variation in the Nursing Home Inspection Process Explain Disparity in Regulatory Outcomes? (Fox, 2020)

Looking at these titles, you can probably pick up that the research topics here are quite specific and narrowly-focused , compared to the generic ones presented earlier. This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

Five Topics for a Master’s in Healthcare Thesis

For many students, the master’s thesis in healthcare is both the most comprehensive project of their academic life and the final piece of work propelling them into the workforce. It needs to contribute to the understanding of a particular topic within the healthcare field while showcasing the student’s area of interest and expertise. Since choosing an appropriate topic is critical, the following list contains some examples of particular interest today.

1. The Role of Mid-level Providers

As people live longer and fewer physicians enter the workforce, mid-level providers, namely nurse practitioners and physician assistants, have an increasingly important role in healthcare. Individual states have different rules as to the scope of practice of these providers, and hospitals and clinics are trying to determine the best way to utilize these professionals. Choosing this broad topic for a master’s thesis, a student could examine how this trend changes healthcare, both in rural and urban areas, and the differing opinions as to the appropriate role these providers should play.

2. How Telemedicine Changes Healthcare Administration

Advances in technology have always influenced the patient experience, but the rise of telemedicine completely changes the provider-patient relationship. This is a rapidly growing field, and researchers have followed its growth closely, noting that, in 2015, “more than 15 million Americans received some kind of medical care remotely.” Healthcare management students are the professionals, in large part, that will help guide the protocols and standards for these types of visits.

3. Dealing with The Opioid Crisis

Modern medicine has made great advances in terms of pharmacology, but this has also led to an increase in over-prescribing medication which unfortunately has led to the serious opioid crisis facing many communities today. While the role of prescribing ultimately rests with the physician, the healthcare field needs innovative management solutions to establish effective policies and programs to alert physicians if a patient has received multiple prescriptions and to identify drug-seeking behavior on the administrative side.

4. The Ramifications of Increasing Numbers of Urgent Care Clinics

As more retail stores now offer urgent care services, more patients are choosing to go this route, resulting in fewer visits to primary care offices. A healthcare management thesis could identify the reasons for this trend and what that means for previously-established clinics and healthcare systems. Frequenting these clinics also results in patients treating acute problems without developing a relationship with their physician which can lead to missing key preventative measures. Another thesis option is to examine costs to patients, healthcare systems and the community that results from a decrease in preventative care.

5. Supporting Families Who Care for Elderly with Dementia

As elderly patients live longer than previous generations, these patients develop increasingly complex medical issues, one such issue being dementia. For families who cannot afford or choose not to place their elderly relatives in nursing homes, clinics and hospitals need to develop better ways to support these families or risk frequent return emergency room visits. Another topic for a healthcare management thesis could center around the primary issues that cause repeat hospitalizations for dementia patients and recommend programs and policies to support caretakers and avoid these situations.

For graduate students, the key to picking a research topic is two-fold. First, as these projects are extensive and direct their careers, students need to choose an area that excites them, and second, the topic should be relevant to the problems in today’s healthcare system. While the above are some possibilities for a master’s thesis in healthcare, there are many more issues in healthcare that need evaluation.

Research ideas for a Health Care Administration Dissertation

Concentrated brunette writing notes into copybook

Selecting a topic to focus on is arguably one of the most important aspects of the dissertation process. Since you’ll be immersed in your topic day after day for at least a few years, it’s essential that you choose a topic you’re passionate about. For those in the healthcare administration field, especially those earning their Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership with an Emphasis in Health Care Administration degree, begin the brainstorming process by considering which aspects of health care administration most interest you as a working professional. How do you see the field evolving in the future? What are the most pressing needs of patients and staff? How can health care continually adapt to change in a modern world? And how can you best contribute to the field?

Table of Contents:

Topics About the Quality of Patient Care

Topics about the patient experience, topics about hospital staff management and development, topics about acute care.

For any hospital or clinic, the top priority is to deliver quality care that improves patient outcomes and builds healthier communities. There are virtually limitless dissertation topics you could choose in this area. For example, you might decide to explore infection prevention, robot-assisted surgery, preventive health screenings or well-woman care. Of course, these are very broad topics, and you’ll need a much narrower topic for your dissertation. Within these topics, you might explore how hospital policies affect racial disparities in health screenings or you might consider how hospital affiliations shape investments in robot-assisted surgical platforms.

The patient experience includes every interaction patients have with the health care system—from triage to billing. If you’re curious to explore the patient experience, consider topics such as health literacy, provider communications, online patient portals, health care transparency and family-centered care. Within these broad categories, consider narrower topics such as:

  • The role of health literacy in oncologic outcomes among African-American men with prostate cancer
  • Governance and ethics regarding the use of patient portals by minors’ guardians
  • Whether publicly available schedules of hospital fees improve patient satisfaction among lower-income families

Health care administrators must not only concern themselves with the patients, but with their staff as well. Consider choosing a staff management or development topic for your doctoral dissertation. You might consider topics such as:

  • The effect of tuition reimbursement policies on staff turnover/retention rates
  • Best practices in follow-up procedures in the wake of medical errors
  • How state law affects medical malpractice insurance
  • The return on investment of professional development courses beyond the minimum requirements
  • Cultivating positive workplace environments with zero discrimination policies

It’s often said that the state of a hospital’s emergency department is an indicator of the hospital’s overall health. Acute care is a hot button issue that you may want to explore in your dissertation. Among the many potential topics in this category are:

  • The use of technological platforms to improve patient flow
  • Challenges in recognizing rare infectious diseases
  • The effects of ER wait times on patient volume
  • Best practices in pediatric-exclusive ERs

Whatever you choose to write about, keep in mind that dissertation topics in GCU’s doctoral programs must be discussed and approved by an assigned dissertation chair before moving forward.

Healthcare Dissertation Topics

Choosing an appropriate dissertation topic is the first step in implementing an appropriate, effective, and specialised research strategy that in turn allows students to facilitate their own academic and professional development.

The ability to explore a given subject in depth and to use the appropriate research tools to answer a dissertation question is often regarded as one of the most essential processes that indicates and demonstrates students’ capacities as future researchers. Therefore, it is important for students to have clear knowledge of the current trends pertaining to their discipline, thus allowing them to make informed decision regarding their own professional future.

To help students prepare for this process this article highlights several healthcare dissertation topics that healthcare students can base their project on; these are divided into five categories: Global health policies, healthcare management, evidence-based healthcare, mental healthcare, and technological advancements (technology takeover).

Global health policies dissertation topics

Healthcare management, evidence-based practice, mental health care dissertation topics, technology takeover.

In general, global health policies pertain to the decisions and the decision-making processes that translate evidence-based practice and healthcare into effective public interventions. The COVID-19 pandemic has dominated our lives but has also highlighted the importance of public health policies. As such, the following topics revolve around this field of healthcare.

  • Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic: How can the World Health Organisation prevent and respond to major pandemic crises?
  • What is the effect of recent public health policies on reducing or controlling childhood obesity? A UK-based case study.
  • What are the current trends, attitudes, and causes that facilitate and establish vaccine hesitancy in British HCPs and what are the barriers towards mitigating this phenomenon?
  • The European Union demonstrated a very inefficient response in terms of securing an adequate number of vaccines in the recent COVID-19 pandemic. What are the underlying reasons for this response to the COVID-19 outbreak?
  • Models and policies of supervision used as a support method for therapists.
  • It has been one year since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. How has Brexit affected Britain’s response to this outbreak?

Healthcare management involves the administration of care systems and institutions and the means with which these processes can optimise healthcare treatment, delivery, and the quality of healthcare services provided. Therefore, healthcare management is also intertwined with patient satisfaction and patient outcomes.

  • What are the ramifications of increasing patient numbers in emergency care settings?
  • What are the socioeconomic and intrinsic healthcare barriers that prevent vaccine equity?
  • Investigating the factors that undermine childhood vaccine coverage in the UK.
  • Ethical and legal matters regarding patients refusing treatment: a deontological approach.
  • What are the best healthcare management practices in follow-up procedures following medical-related errors?
  • What is the difference and the effectiveness of horizontal and vertical healthcare strategies?

Evidence-based practise or EBP is an interdisciplinary approach in which current scientific evidence is used to formulate and define the underlying decision-making processes regarding patient care and treatment. Therefore, this term underlines the importance of integrating clinical experience with the best and most appropriate clinical evidence stemming from systematic research. Dissertation topics related to evidence-based practice intend to investigate the most effective care available and whose implementation is bound to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction rates.

  • A Systematic review on the effectiveness of single and multi-tablet regimes for treating HIV in patients.
  • What are the determinants for success in apical surgery? A systematic review.
  • Can chronic stress increase the risk of atherosclerosis?
  • Can stigmatisation help change or shape individual health behaviours?
  • What is the efficiency of physical activity in terms of reducing excessive weight during pregnancy?
  • Child poverty and healthcare access: A case study for the UK.
  • Diabetes: The efficiency of associated lifestyle interventions in tackling this major public health issue.

Mental health care refers to the services, policies, and processes that focus on the treatment of mental illnesses and disorders. Therefore, the main purpose of this healthcare field involves the improvement of mental health in patients suffering from dementia, anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorders, etc. by enhancing their quality of life through consultation, support, and innovative therapeutic approaches.

  • What is the psychological and mental aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak in children?
  • Mapping of the pathophysiology related to the diagnosis of a person experiencing complex healthcare needs such as vascular dementia.

Important Notes:

As a management student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing management theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The management field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like operations management , business , business administration , MBA , human resource management and more. That is why creating a management dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample management dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Master of Public Health

A thesis is a substantive and original body of work that allows the student to synthesize and integrate knowledge from their public health course work and practicum experiences, apply it to a particular topic area, and communicate their ideas and findings through a scholarly written product. The thesis represents the culmination of the student’s educational experience in the Vanderbilt MPH Program.

The thesis may take on different formats, depending on the student’s track focus and interests. Regardless of the format chosen, the student must apply critical thought, systematic analysis, and clear presentation.

Each student is responsible for identifying a topic and appropriate format for their thesis with the assistance and guidance of faculty advisers and faculty thesis readers.

The practicum product must be distinct from the thesis. Although the practicum and thesis can be related, the student must be able to articulate how the two projects are independent from one another. The practicum is a practice experience that allows students to apply and develop skills in public health concepts. The thesis is the synthesis and integration of knowledge acquired in coursework and through the practicum and results in an original scholarly work.

View selection of published theses

Additionally, students have the option to pursue publishing their thesis products in scholarly journals.

Healthcare Leadership – master's thesis topics and themes 2023

Published: 20.12.2023 / publication / blog.

In the dynamic and ever-changing realm of healthcare, leadership on all levels is a critical and necessary aspect that is required to enable healthcare organisations to fulfil their purpose of caring for others and improving health status within societies (Ledlow, Bosworth & Maryon, 2023). Amidst the rapid technological changes, as well as the challenges in staff shortage and new working environments, the need for adaptive, visionary leadership is more critical than ever (Fagerdahl et al., 2022). Consequently, academic education and professional development on leadership topics, training and development are critical to enhancing healthcare leadership in practice, organisational and societal contexts (Marcellus et al., 2018).

The objective of this blog post is to present the themes and topics of the most recent master's thesis studies conducted within the master's degree programme Healthcare Leadership (formerly Leadership in Nordic Healthcare) at Arcada University of Applied Sciences. All master students within the program are required to conduct a 30 ECTS master's thesis development and research project with the aim of developing healthcare leadership. The project gives the student the possibility to specialise according to their own leadership interests.

In the master's thesis Leaders solving ethical digital dilemmas in healthcare , Lindewall (2023) examines the fast-evolving field of digital healthcare, with an aim to uncover, identify and address the several ethical dilemmas that leaders need to face when introducing and implementing digital solutions in healthcare. As an overall statement, Lindewall (2023) acknowledges that the positive impacts of digitalisation generally outweigh the negatives, and most ethical challenges have suitable and functional solutions. However, given the rapid development of digital healthcare new dilemmas will arise, which will pose new challenges for healthcare leaders, as digital healthcare becomes not only more widespread, but it is expected to become the new normal in the healthcare sector (Lindewall, 2023)

Jose Lanithottam (2023) examines transformational leadership in nursing during organisational changes, specifically focusing on the Ostrobothnia welfare area in Finland. The thesis investigates what roles nurse leaders adopt during fusion processes and mergers, and what the associated strengths and challenges of these roles are during these. Using semi-structured interviews, Jose Lanithottam's (2023) study identified the influential, intellectual, motivational, and considerate role of the nursing leaders in leading the change process and the strengths and challenges of each role they prefer during the ongoing change processes. Understanding these different types of working traits is an advantage in leadership, especially when confronted with a change process and in preserving the workforce to implement the vision of the organisation (Jose Lanithottam, 2023)

In their thesis Preceptors' experience on their support and training at the pediatric and adolescent clinic - Turku university hospital Lifländer and Ylinen (2023) explore training and support for preceptors (defined as experienced and skilled professionals providing guidance, instruction, and mentoring to less experienced individuals) in the VARHA (The wellbeing services county of Southwest Finland) Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Turku University Hospital in Finland. Their study aims to evaluate existing preceptorship training, assess preceptors' perceptions of its adequacy, and identify the training needs of preceptors. Lifländer and Ylinen (2023) found that while most preceptors value precepting and find it beneficial, many are unaware of available training programs and desire more training and support in their roles. The key concerns that Lifländer and Ylinen (2023) identified were insufficient training, limited supervisor support, and inadequate time allocation for effective precepting, underscoring the need for improvements to ensure quality patient care in the face of staffing challenges. Additionally, the study identified that preceptors seek greater involvement and resource allocation from supervisors and healthcare leaders. Lifländer and Ylinen (2023) conclude, that it is critical for healthcare leaders to adjust the workload for preceptors, ensuring that preceptors have enough time enables them to conduct their work, as this can ensure that new healthcare professionals are well-integrated and committed.

The thesis Learning leaders lead learning: Exploring future healthcare leadership competencies in the context of change by Ehn and Eklundh (2023) investigates the competencies healthcare leaders need amidst global changes like technological advancements, demographic shifts, and economic challenges. The focus of the study lies on welfare countries in Northern Europe, Australia, and Canada. The study emphasises the necessity of updated leadership skills for ensuring not only patient safety, but also workforce well-being, an ever more important aspect (Ehn & Eklundh, 2023). Ehn and Eklundh (2023) identified a broad skill set that healthcare leaders need to possess, including the ability to lead oneself and engage others, the skill to achieve results and develop coalitions as well as knowledge of system transformation and the ability to navigate complexity. As a conclusion, Ehn and Eklundh (2023) find that the role of the learning leader becomes increasingly essential within healthcare as the field is undergoing significant transformation and facing a multitude of challenges and changes.

The topic of Leadership has also been studies from a communication perspective. In their study Leadership Strategies in resolving communication challenges among Internationally Educated Nurses: A Literature Review , Warburg and Tuominen (2023) set out to identify what strategies or leadership styles nursing leaders or managers employ to resolve issues with communication challenges with internationally educated nurses, as well as if there are specific strategy that works solely for communication issues and challenges in the case of internationally educated nurses. As Warburg and Tuominen state (2023) state, in nursing, leadership and communication are vital, especially for internationally educated nurses facing language and cultural barriers, and there is a need for leaders to help these nurses overcome communication challenges. The study identified various strategies, such as mentorship and collaborative leadership, but no universal solution. Therefore, nurse leaders must tailor their support to each nurse's specific needs (Warburg and Tuominen, 2023). As the amount of internationally educated nurses working in, for instance the Nordic countries, is rising, this leadership topic becomes even more important.

Conclusions

As can be seen, the current state of themes and topics in healthcare leadership studies on a master's degree level reveals several interesting areas of ongoing inquiry, addressing various aspects of leadership. These topics are also in line with broader healthcare leadership themes identified by others, such as transformational leadership, impact of leadership on nursing retention and job satisfaction, educational strategies for nurse leaders, technology and nurse leadership, and diversity and inclusivity in nursing leadership (van Diggele et al. 2020; Ledlow et al., 2023; Marcellus et al., 2018). What these studied hopefully contribute to, is a deeper understanding of the role of leadership in the ever-evolving healthcare landscape. Moreover, they hopefully can aid in transforming healthcare leaders from mere administrators to catalysts of change and visionaries.

I would personally like to thank all students for their hard work, and their efforts in developing healthcare leadership.

Cultural diversity in healthcare – the role of leadership and education

masters in healthcare management thesis topics

The shortage of nurses is a global issue that already threatens the ability to deliver safe and effective care. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this gap in the healthcare workforce, especially in Europe, could be characterised as a ‘ticking time bomb’ that could worsen health outcomes and, in extreme cases, lead to system collapse (WHO, 2022).

From Beds to Bytes: Virtual Wards in Healthcare

masters in healthcare management thesis topics

The Finnish healthcare sector is facing rather big challenges. The ageing population and a high number of people with chronic diseases and disabilities, paired with a decrease in healthcare professionals, has set high pressure on the Finnish healthcare sector. This calls for alternative solutions, and one possible solution, that has been pioneered in the United Kingdom as a response to the chronic and unsustainable high demand for hospital beds, is the use of virtual wards.

5 Thesis Topics for a Master’s in Public Health Student

5 ideas for a master's in public health thesis.

  • Disease-Specific Research
  • Healthcare Policy
  • International Topics
  • Minority and At-Risk Communities
  • Personal Passions

Not every Master's in Public Health (MPH) degree requires a thesis. Some programs require internships or applied research projects instead. For students of public health who are interested in completing a master's dissertation, choosing the right topic is important. A well-written, well-researched MPH dissertation can lead to a great job offer right after graduation. Here are a few thesis topics to consider.

Related Resource: 50 Most Affordable Master in Public Health Degree Programs 2018

1. Disease-Specific Research

Writing a dissertation is a time-consuming effort: Students must conduct literature reviews, collect data, analyze their results and write hundreds of dense pages. This makes it challenging for full-time students to also be full-time employees. Grant funding can help students concentrate on completing their degree, but it's rare for master's theses to receive grant funding outside of the natural sciences. An easy way for MPH students to tap into available funding options is to focus their research efforts on a specific disease like cancer, HIV/AIDS or heart disease. Students concentrating in epidemiology or biostatistics will have the easiest time connecting specific diseases with their area of concentration.

2. Healthcare Policy

With constant changes to American healthcare policy, students always have access to a variety of policy-related topics for their master's theses. Students could analyze national issues, like the new policies in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or ObamaCare, reported on by The Washington Post . State and local health policy topics give students a chance to establish themselves as leading experts in specialized fields.

3. International Topics

Global health is a hot field in schools of public health. Thousands of students have been inspired by public health leaders, like Dr. Paul Farmer and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, to apply public health knowledge to developing countries. However, students should take care when pursuing an MPH research project in an international topic. Overseas programs can rack up big charges while providing limited benefits, and employers aren't as interested in dissertations as universities are. Oftentimes, international health students would be better served by completing a domestic research project and using any extra cash to volunteer or intern abroad.

4. Minority and At-Risk Communities

Public health schools are often enmeshed in local communities. This means MPH students can partner with professors to build theses off of existing research and local connections. Possible opportunities include using Hispanic churches to promote nutrition education to Hispanic populations, partnering with barbershops to encourage African American men to test their blood pressure or creating a profile on Grindr to advertise HIV/AID testing events to LBGTQ populations.

5. Personal Passions

The best theses topics for MPH students are driven by personal passion. That's because writing a master's dissertation takes many months of effort. Students must fully immerse themselves in the scientific discourse around their chosen topic and be prepared to constantly revise their writing and research until it's perfect. Without passion, motivation will fade. It's better for students to select a so-so topic they can write an excellent paper on than to settle for a top-tier subject and deliver a ho-hum dissertation.

Few students head to graduate school with fully formed research agendas. That's why public health programs teach the research methods and subject matter expertise necessary to develop and complete a strong Master's in Public Health thesis.
