A book like this cannot be written in isolation. While most of the text found in this manual is original, dozens of similar books and experts were consulted, and many colleagues and friends provided information, feedback, and suggestions. My greatest thanks goes to Nancy Vyhmeister, author of the first AIIAS writing manual, for her willingness to share original content and ideas from her work. Chapter 1 is taken largely from her prior work. She was also instrumental as a consultant for the Turabian chapter and in overall editing of this book. How a text is written influences what is written. The writing process involves more than grammar and sentence structure. The authors use Laurel Richardson’s “writing-story” to discuss the process of writing a dissertation. The authors share how they negotiated the advisor–advisee relationship throughout the dissertation process. Narratives are used to illustrate the differing perceptions experienced and negotiated within the advisor–advisee relationship. Mentoring emerging scholars requires knowledge of the student beyond evaluation of his or her manuscript. Five aspects writing frame the discussion: trust, communication, time, identity, and reflexivity.

Given a structure, the next challenge is to actually begin writing. Strategies for writing are the subject of the next chapter. In this chapter, I take a brief detour and consider some of the tools of writing and communication.

An Experiment in Writing that Flows
An experiment in writing that flows: citationality and collaborative writing.
It’s been argued that spell-checkers make authors lazy, and that writers at any level with access to a spell-checker make more mistakes than those without. I suspect that this is a case where average behaviour is meaningless—for some people it is an essential tool, while for others it is little more than a distraction. However, spell-checkers are at best a partial solution, and do not allow an author to avoid the task of a thorough proofread.
Yes, data is an ‘it’—not a ‘them’—in this context, because I am not referring to a numerable quantity, or a set made up in a meaningful way of individual datums [sic], but to a form of information. Pedantry may be with ‘them’, but usage isn’t.
Here I use ‘cute’ in the sense that is closer to nauseating than to sweet. Please take the hint.
However, it is not a good idea to open up the files while they are on the USB drive—instead, first copy them to your hard disk. Currently (2014), the USB drives can burn out if they are being accessed continuously. If used as backup only, though, even the cheap ones will last for years.

MS in Mechanical Engineering - Thesis Guidelines
Students may choose to pursue a thesis as part of their MS degree program, but only with the consent of a faculty advisor willing to supervise the thesis work.
Preparation of a thesis representing an independent research work is a pivotal phase of this MS degree program. It provides the student with an opportunity to work on an open-ended problem, developing a particular solution that is not pre-determined and involving synthesis of knowledge and intellectual creativity. The thesis may involve an investigation that is fundamental in nature, or may be applied, incorporating theory, experimental testing and/or analytical modeling, and/or creative design. Through the thesis, candidates are expected to give evidence of competence in research and a sound understanding of the area of specialization involved. Students are also strongly encouraged to present their research at scientific conferences and publish the results of their thesis research in a peer-reviewed journal.
Students receive a grade of Y (incomplete) in these courses as long as the thesis in progress. Eventual thesis grades replace the incomplete grades upon formal completion of the thesis. In order to receive a grade of Y for ME-0296, students must submit a thesis prospectus that outlines the area of work, thesis goals, proposed approach and a review of relevant past work in the literature before the end of the first semester in which the student enrolls in ME-0296, typically the third semester of full-time study. An example of a recent MS thesis prospectus can be found in the Mechanical Engineering office.
The examining committee for MS candidates completing theses should be composed of three (3) members.
- Thesis advisor (committee chair)
- One technical expert outside of the ME department
- A third member of the committee, often another faculty member in the ME department
The committee chair is normally a full-time, tenure-track faculty member. One committee member must be from outside the ME department. Thesis normally counts as 9 credits towards the MS degree requirements. However, a student, with the approval of his/her thesis advisor, has the option to complete a 6-credit thesis by submitting a petition form to the Department. This petition must be signed by the student and the thesis advisor and will become part of the student's academic record. With a 6-credit thesis, a student must complete an extra graduate-level course (for a total of 8 courses) to fulfill the 30-credit requirement for graduation. This option is not typically available to those intending to pursue a Ph.D. degree.
Thesis Completion
The MS thesis is completed upon:
- A successful oral defense (open to the community)
- Submittal of an approved thesis to the Office of Graduate Studies
The student should consult the Graduate Student Handbook for specific dates and deadlines for this process in the graduation semester.

Usually, the examiners recommend changes, some minor and possibly major changes, to be made by the student before the thesis is acceptable for the award of the PhD degree.
The most important paragraph is the first one. Your lead must capture the reader immediately and force him to keep reading. Next, details must gradually build up - keep the reader inquisitive. Writing is the act of developing a relationship between the author and reader. Think about your writing in these terms.
