When I was a child, my dream was to find the work connected with managing people and resources. The vision persisted until it became time for pursuing a college degree, where I opted for a business course in Human Resource Management (HRM). I intended to be in a position to lead people at the workplace. After graduating from school, luckily, I got an internship program with one of the renowned retail companies called Costco Retailers.

The first working experience was memorable because I finally managed to become independent and earn my first money. When I started working in the corporation, I changed my mentality to adapt to the new system. This paper will discuss the experience during my first job recruitment, skills, and knowledge gathered during this period. During the first working experience, recruits should apply the theoretical knowledge in practice to avoid difficulties in time-management, issue solving, and communication with clients and colleagues.

The time-management appeared to be a fundamental problem that I have faced during my experience. It was a requirement that all the staff report one hour before the opening of the stores. This was necessary to facilitate daily planning and arrangement of the work routine to enhance the efficiency of the operations. It was difficult for me to manage time properly and organize the activities of other people. I had to participate in various events and often failed to perform my duties correctly. There even was a period of time when I was at significant risk of being fired. I had to learn how to be time-conscious to overcome the pressure. I solved this problem thanks to applying some time-management techniques.

Besides the time factor, another issue was working under pressure. During the first few months, I was stationed at the customer care desk to attend to the clients’ queries. At this position, several problems emerged that required immediate attention from the top managers within the department. It was challenging to handle some inquiries because of the large number of customers and the nature of their needs. The intensity to meet their expectation was overwhelming, and it involved many commands from the senior staff.

Another problem that required theoretical knowledge from me was cultural diversity. Shoppers consist of people from different races, gender, culture, and profession. Communicating with customers was a nightmare, especially for those whose cultures tend to diverge at some point. Sometimes you might offend people from different cultures without noticing it. Nonetheless, thanks to their interactive nature and understanding, some clients helped me learn how to communicate appropriately.

Generally, working with customers entails fluctuating motions since they come in different moods with various expectations to be fulfilled. Meeting people from different backgrounds increased my exposure and understanding of individuals behave in relation to their culture. The race-tolerance strategies learned during my education helped me to adjust my communicational style.

I thought handling customers was the main challenge of this position, but there was another significant problem. Being a novice, young, and unfamiliar with the company’s system was another terrifying encounter. At the customer care desk, we had co-workers who had been in the institution for an extended period. These workers used to take advantage of the recruits by assigning complex tasks and overworking them. I became a victim and felt exploited since I could do twice what the other workers were doing. From one point of view, such pressure was rational, aiming to increase my working skills. From the other point, I had moral difficulties coping with a considerable amount of work while experienced colleagues did not offer me any help.

It is also essential to mention which new skills I have gained during my working experience which contribute to my professional development. Thanks to this organization, I gained valuable knowledge and skills helpful for developing in this work industry. First, I gained an understanding of how to communicate with customers and colleagues. Before joining the Costco team, I thought managing people was easy to perform and did not require any special knowledge. Thanks to this working experience, I have learned that communication and management is a whole science that requires profound knowledge and well-developed communicational skills. Therefore, I realized that it is critical to apply the behavioral analysis approach to maintain effective communication.

Moreover, the company made me develop and improve my intrapersonal skills. Working with people having different ages and cultures requires self-understanding (Horak & Matoskova, 2018). To be able to relate effectively with other staff members and even customers, I had to learn how to communicate and listen. Communication is essential in advancing the relationship amongst the business affiliates. The on-the-job experience made it easier to comprehend and apply the skills. Here I also successfully applied the gained during my education knowledge.

Surprisingly, technological knowledge was vital during my working experience. Furthermore, being at the customer care desk exposed me to using the computer system to record, search, monitor, and even communicate with the administration. I developed deep insight into technology, and my computer knowledge increased. Through the period, I could use the system to perform critical tasks like monitoring the level of inventory, tracking customers’ purchasing records, and updating new valuable information for clients. In addition, I was able to analyze the trend of buyers, which was helpful for the administration for updating the stocks.

Another critical skill that I acquired during the period was the ability to solve problems. At the customer care desk, clients came with various issues ranging from sales of defective products to poor service delivery. I have analyzed different literature on the topic of problem-solving. Multiple techniques help the manager build good relationships with the customer and colleagues (Funke et al., 2018). One of them is the culturally-tolerant attitude towards the participants of communication. I developed a profound knowledge of managing different circumstances to generate a proper solution by handling such issues. Seeing and learning how the colleagues were regulating similar situations at work was vital and prompted self-confidence. To make a decision, self-reliance is essential as it allows one to find their own answers to the problem.

Generally, obtaining a job after completing coursework in college is beneficial because you can gain valuable experience. On the job, learning makes the whole perspective different as it comes with arrays of experiences both encouraging and demoralizing. Sometimes changing and adapting to a new routine is difficult for the new employees. Furthermore, interacting with various people at the workplace advance understanding and worldview of individuals.

The exposure also makes people gain the necessary knowledge and skills that are essential for further carrier development. Joining the proper organization could impact the level of experience individual gains. If people are ready to develop their knowledge and skills, asking questions, elaborate new ideas, then the chances of attaining new skills at work are high. It is also vital to implement the theoretical concept learned through education in practice. Thus, applying theoretical concepts and constant development contributed to forming a positive working experience.

The Experience of the First Job

Growing up as a shy and self-contained person, I have never thought that I would be able to work with people. When I was offered an internship opportunity at a rehabilitation center, I was so frightened, I thought I would fail. The mere thought of constantly meeting new people and talking to them scared me, and overcoming this fear was the most difficult thing I have done in my life. The experience of the last six months has changed my perception of myself, turning me into a more open, friendly, kind, and confident person. Analyzing my journey, I now feel grateful for this opportunity and willing to share my experience.

When I came to work on my very first day, I felt extremely nervous and anxious. However, I was welcomed kindly and introduced to the staff who happened to be nice and friendly people. My job was to meet patients and answer their questions while they are waiting for their appointment. From the start, I encountered several problems due to my lack of experience. The first was always feeling unsure about what I was doing and saying. The second was communication difficulties that I have experienced for my entire life. As a shy person who had never worked with people, I had trouble finding the common language with patients of different ages and backgrounds. The third issue was the fear of new challenges that I had to encounter every day.

At this job, I learned several important things that changed my perception of my future career: how to deal with stress, how to communicate with people, and how to work in a team. When I overcame the initial anxiety of asking for help and realized that my colleagues are always happy to offer me their advice and support, I started to feel much more self-confident. I learned how to talk with patients, what to say and what to do when I am unable to help them, and I was surprised to see that, day after day, there were fewer and fewer problems that I could not solve. This experience has changed my personality, and I now feel that I have turned into a more confident, friendly, kind, and empathetic person that is not afraid to ask for help and meet new challenges.

Is Everyone Else Freaking Out About Starting a New Job, or Is It Just Me?

If you’ve ever gone to the beach and waded into the shallow part of the ocean, there’s a good chance you were standing in the littoral zone. This transitional area between dry land and open water is rife with sunlight and nutrients, making it an ideal ecosystem for plants to thrive. To step into the littoral zone is to enter a dynamic, in-between space, one where the security of solid ground is behind you and the promise of wild possibility is ahead of you. I recently found myself caught in the corporate-world equivalent of the littoral zone, standing between the familiar ground of an old job and the uncharted waters of a new opportunity.

About a month ago, I decided to leave a job that I mostly loved. I’d been a senior marketing manager for a health information company for just under three years, two of which were spent working from home because of the pandemic. During my tenure, I helped grow the brand’s digital footprint and I got to work with a lovely team of people who, in the end, felt more like friends than anything. But in my last year at the company, things started to feel stagnant. The parts of the role that once presented healthy challenges for me had become uncomplicated, routine matters. I found myself feeling bored and boxed in, stuck on dry land and struggling to see a path for growth.

So when a public media organization I’ve admired for years approached me with a more senior job opportunity, I agreed to interview. They were looking for a director of digital engagement, someone to lead audience growth across digital platforms. Months of interviewing led to a job offer one Wednesday morning in February and I was delirious with joy. I was getting the chance to lead a team and be the true owner of a digital-first strategy, a tremendous step for my career. After what felt like two whole years of living the same day over again, I was being offered a drastic and exciting change, a chance to be in fresh waters. I accepted the next day and put in my notice shortly after.

Goodbyes, bliss, and an anxious spiral of self-interrogation

I spent the next few weeks transitioning out of my company and saying a thousand farewells over Zoom , which, although far less intimate than in-person goodbyes, still left me with a sharp sadness in my throat. My company was big and my teammates were spread across various parts of the world. But there’s a particular kind of bond that forms between the people who survive a pandemic together—even the ones you never meet in person. These were the faces that greeted me in isolation. We were all in our separate corners tiptoeing through crisis together, and in the process, we’d become one another’s constants.

The first several days following my last official sign-off were drenched in life-giving sunlight. I had a little less than  three weeks off between jobs and spent my early newfound freedom drifting through a dizzying spell of possibility. I read; I hiked; I traveled; I did house projects and napped in the bald afternoon. I was in the grips of a sweet kind of thrill that I knew would slowly dwindle once I transitioned back to work, but I was steadfast in my enjoyment of it—at first.

By day nine, the bliss started to wane. The auspicious glow that initially beckoned me toward the new job began to fade and harsher realities came into focus. After nearly three comfortable years at my former company, I was about to be the new person again, faced with learning the ins and outs of a fast-moving organization—but this time with more senior responsibilities and the invisible pressure that comes with being a BIPOC, female director.

It wasn’t long before I found myself in an anxious spiral of self-interrogation. Do I really have it in me to take this on? What if I disappoint them? What if I made the wrong choice? The more I dwelled on the comforts of my last job coupled with the what-ifs of the future, the more one-dimensional the view ahead grew.

As I inched closer to my start date my anxiety became more pronounced. I realized that in my transition to a new company I was leaving behind not just a job, but a way of living, one with hard-earned grooves I’d relaxed into. The new role required me to be in the office two days a week, which would mean commuting to San Francisco again after a two-year hiatus. Prior to the pandemic, I’d been taking BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) into the city, which always felt like spinning a giant wheel of misfortune before each ride: What experience awaits me today? Would I be yelled at by a belligerent stranger? Faint into the arms of fellow commuters due to lack of airflow? I’d been through both and more during past commutes. Needless to say, I wasn’t too keen to go back.

Although working remotely had its monotonous moments, I loved the flexibility it added to my life: the freedom to travel or toss in a load of wash between meetings, to work on the patio or take my dog to the park during lunch. I knew I didn’t have to give up these freedoms entirely, but I expected many of them to shrink in light of my commute and what I anticipated would be heavier meeting days as a director. Thanks to the pandemic, I had been sheltered (perhaps even coddled) by sameness for two straight years—and any change to my daily threatened to throw me off my axis. I didn’t know how to deal.

I barely slept the weekend leading up to my first day. Whenever I did manage to drift off, I’d often awake and instantly panic, my slumber having rendered me more vulnerable to the pointed worries that stalked my waking hours. I tried to keep the panic at bay by taking slow, calming breaths and telling myself that I was going to be OK, this would all be OK.

If all of this sounds dramatic, that’s because it was at the time. There isn’t an instruction manual on starting a new job after living through (OK, during) a pandemic. I no longer knew how to cope with such major life shifts, and the more I got in my head about what could go wrong, the more I freaked out.

A first day, week, and month

Eventually my first day in the office came and went, and the words I came home to tell my fiancé were these: “It was actually quite nice.” Up until that point, I’d channeled so much of my nervous energy into convincing myself that things were going to be dismal. I hadn’t even considered what would happen if things actually turned out to be “quite nice.”

My new office building was recently renovated and beautiful to be in, an immaculate space in the Mission steeped in daylight, and a stark contrast to my living-room-corner-turned-home-office of the last two years. Thanks to a designated office parking garage, I was able to drive into work my first day and re-experience the joy of a morning podcast , something that had been on pause along with my commute. The best part of that day, and every day that I’ve gone into the office since, was getting to be among the people. After so much isolation, gathering in person with a team again felt both invigorating and comforting. It softened the places in my body where I’d been tense with worry, and it helped me realize everything really was going to be OK.

By week two, I’d been added to various creative projects and campaign planning meetings. Though my calendar was starting to look like one solid color for the majority of the day, I appreciated the opportunity to be involved in upcoming initiatives. The fear and imposter syndrome that had previously felt so pronounced began to subside as I realized that my contributions in meetings were just as valuable as the rest of the team’s. It wasn't long before I built an extensive to-do list  with tasks ranging from finding new hires for my team to reviewing my department’s budget and creating strategic plans for digital advertising. Though overwhelming to look at on some days, seeing such significant responsibilities reminded me of the reason I took this job in the first place: I wanted to grow.

It’s been over a month since I started and while the job itself hasn’t been easy, I’ve learned that it’s the right kind of challenge, the kind I’d been craving all that time on dry land. I’ve also learned that in some cases the discomfort of a transition can lead you to that sweet spot—the one where living things plant themselves in order to thrive.

Many employers now require a writing sample, or job application essay , to accompany all applications or résumés — even if writing is not a significant part of the position. The goal of the job application essay is to ensure that applicants have the right communication skills for the position offered. Sometimes, potential employers will provide a specific topic or series of questions for your essay to respond to. However, you may also be asked to provide an essay with no guidance whatsoever. Outlining Your Essay

Step 1 Read the job listing and essay description carefully.

  • If you don't know much about the company, do a little research on it before you start writing. You might look at their website or do a general internet search with the name of the company to see if any news articles or other reports come up. Go beyond the four corners of the job listing so that you understand who will likely be reading your essay.
  • If there's anything in the job listing or essay requirements that you don't understand, contact the employer and ask about them. Employers are often impressed by applicants who clarify the employer's intent rather than making assumptions.

Step 2 State your theme or thesis statement upfront.

  • For example, if you're applying for a position in sales, you might want to write an essay about your ability to tailor your pitch to specific clients and close the deal. If you have the ability to be more creative, you might tailor your essay to "sell" yourself directly to the employer.

Step 3 Brainstorm 3 or 4 points that support your thesis statement.

  • For each of your points, think of a specific example you can relate briefly that illustrates the point. For example, if you've described yourself as a "team player," you might include an example of how you came in on your day off to complete some of the more monotonous tasks that no one else wanted to do so a project could be completed ahead of schedule.
  • It's a good idea to have more than one example in your outline for each point, even if you only end up using one. That way, if you start writing something and it ends up not working as well as you thought it would, you'll have a back-up handy.
  • Brainstorming can be difficult. If you find yourself churning over the same thoughts, stand up and take a break for a few minutes. Step outside or go for a walk to clear your head, then come back to it.

Step 4 Gather documents and information to fill out your points.

  • For example, if you want to describe how you increased sales in a specific quarter, you would want to state specifically how much you increased sales. Your former employer may have sales figures that you could ask them for. You might also have that information in your records.
  • Wherever possible, use specific numbers and dates rather than making general statements. It's okay to estimate, but make sure your estimate is conservative. Saying you led your sales team to the highest sales in a quarter is impressive — but only if it's true.

Completing Your Rough Draft

Step 1 Start with an introductory paragraph that describes you and your essay.

  • Think of this paragraph as telling the hiring manager what you're going to tell them in the essay. Outline the points you're going to elaborate on in the essay that back up your theme or thesis statement.
  • Sometimes it's best to go back and write your introduction after you've written the body of your essay. That way, you can make sure the introduction provides an outline that matches the body.

Step 2 Organize your essay logically.

  • If the employer listed specifically what should be included in your essay, follow their order, since that's what they'll be looking for when they read the essay.
  • Write in the first person and make yourself the star of any anecdote you include as an example. Use action verbs to focus on what you did rather than focusing on what happened and how you reacted to it. Step 3 Create transitions between each paragraph of your essay.

  • For example, if you're writing about your skills as a team player, you might note that you discuss doing routine work that others found monotonous so they had time to work on other parts of a project. You could use that detail to move on to a section describing how you're detail-oriented.

Step 4 Use your closing to summarize your essay.

  • For example, you might write "My business school education, skills as a team player, and focus on detail make me the best candidate to lead your sales team."

Finalizing Your Essay

Step 1 Proofread your essay for spelling, grammar, and typographical errors.

  • For example, you might start by looking solely at punctuation, then read through again focusing on spelling.
  • If you find that you tend to repeat a particular error, go through your essay looking for that error specifically.
  • If your grammar isn't particularly strong or you're writing in a language other than your native language, have someone else read over your essay as well.

Step 2 Read your essay out loud.

  • If you find that you stumble over a sentence while reading aloud, that's a sign that your writing could be clearer. Work with your text until you have something that you can read aloud with ease.

Step 3 Edit

  • If the prospective employer did not specify a length, try to keep your essay under 2 double-spaced pages. Remember that hiring managers are busy and don't have a lot of time to read a long, rambling essay.
  • Eliminate all unnecessary words or sentences that aren't relevant to the subject of your essay. The majority of your sentences should be short, declarative sentences with action verbs.

Step 4 Work backward through your essay to proofread a second time.

  • Working backward is particularly helpful for noticing spelling mistakes, especially hard-to-catch homophone errors, because you're seeing the word out of context.

Step 5 Print your essay and read through it a final time.

  • It may also help to print your essay in a different font or font size than what you used to type it. This breaks your brain's familiarity with the text, which can make typos and other errors more noticeable. Just remember to change the font back after you print it.

Most graduate students do not have the luxury of time to devote to lots of career exploration activities that aren’t directly relevant to their scholarly commitments (course work, dissertation writing, teaching and so on). The vast majority of graduate students can’t take time off to pursue an internship opportunity, and the few who are able to do so might take advantage of such an opportunity just once in their graduate careers. Yet, as Paula Di Rita Wishart noted in her previous “Carpe Careers” column on job experience , an internship is not the only way to explore your career interests in an experiential way and to make professional connections.

You can accomplish that by immersing yourself for a relatively short period of time in a new professional context. In immersives , as we call them at Rackham Graduate School, students spend a day or two learning more about the workplaces, projects, research and other opportunities involved in a specific career context. Immersives give students the chance to network with and visit an organization of interest to them, as well as to engage in its work.

For example, our immersive students conduct practice teaching for the university teaching and learning center, write short grant reviews at our state humanities council, participate in the local community foundation’s annual community meeting, or design a lesson plan for a university museum tour. Students typically participate in those experiences after they’ve narrowed their career interests a bit as a next step beyond informational interviewing. Or they use them as an opportunity to just dive in and explore something that piques their interest to see if it’s a good fit with their career values, interests and skills.

Similarly, after an exciting informational interview, you might want to engage in some kind of activity at an organization -- to participate in or even contribute to a community event, to provide advice or analysis on a specific project that intrigued you, or to attend a public advisory board meeting to see how an organization runs. You do not need a structured program to do this, and we frequently encourage students who have an organization they’ve already connected with in mind to design their own immersive.

That said, engaging in something like an immersive for several hours or even a day does not necessarily mean you’ll learn from the experience. Those of you who teach will know this from your experience as an instructor. You design a great active learning activity for your students, only to find when you assess their learning at the end of class that some of the students still didn’t get it. Maybe they didn’t do the reading, they didn’t have some essential prior knowledge, they were distracted, or they were unmotivated and passively engaged in the activity. Whatever the reason, experience doesn’t always translate to learning.

For example, after spending a half day at a museum to learn more about museum research careers, one of our earliest immersive participants confided in me that she didn’t get the most out of the time she had there and felt it was a missed opportunity. What was missing?

As someone who has been shepherding students through these experiences for several years now, I would like to share four best practices I’ve learned to immerse yourself most productively so that you leave such experiences with greater career clarity and ideas about your next steps.

Engage Actively

If you want to go beyond the information you can gain from an informational interview, you need to do more than observe passively or ask questions. Students often fall back on shadowing to learn more about a job, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But what task can you complete during a brief shadowing experience to get a firsthand sense of the skills needed for this work? You should offer to take on a concrete assignment for a specific project or activity, such as analyzing data or text, designing something, conducting topic research, or facilitating a small piece of a larger event.

Meet a Need

Of course, in your own career development, your primary goal is to gain marketable experience and clarity on your professional goals. However, a successful immersive typically results when a student thinks beyond their own professional needs and designs a mutually beneficial experience with an organization or a professional mentor. In our most impactful immersives, a student identifies a need that an organization has and contributes her expertise to meet that need. Organizations will be much more likely to let you sit in on an important meeting, volunteer at an exciting event or have access to information on an emerging project if you can contribute to their organizational goals and needs. As you think about where you might want to explore and engage in a short-term professional experience, ask yourself, “What distinct skills can I contribute that will meet this organization’s needs?”

The student I mentioned earlier who didn’t get the most out of her museum visit confessed to me that she just didn’t prepare. She didn’t research the organizational mission, she didn’t read the staff biographical profiles online, she didn’t think about whom she wanted to meet with individually while she was there and she didn’t investigate what museum research typically involves. You don’t need to invest a ton of time in preparing -- remember, the goal here is to gain a bit of experience in a field that piques your interest yet not spend significant time away from your scholarly work. But you should set aside one hour to apply your well-honed research skills to prepare for the experience so that you make the most out of the short time you have at an organization. Prepare questions, research the organization’s mission and staff, and read at least one relevant article about the field or organization.

Reflect on What You Learned

Just as preparation before an experience will help you to get the most out of immersing yourself, reflection afterward is extremely important in identifying lessons learned and next steps. Perhaps the experience crystallized an important insight for you, or you discovered an important skill that is required for the work that you need to develop further. You may even have discovered that the organization was not a good fit for some reason, in which case it is valuable to think through why and what that means for your interests going forward. Pick up your journal or open up your individual development plan -- wherever you are tracking notes or thoughts on your own career development -- and set aside time to reflect on the following questions:

  • What stands out to you from your experience, and why is that important for your career clarity?
  • What benefits did you gain (values engaged, skills acquired, knowledge learned) as a result of this experience?
  • What do you see as your next step(s)?

Even better, I’d encourage you to process these questions together with a graduate career counselor, a professional mentor or a trusted peer to integrate the experience into your broader career development.

Immersives are an excellent way to get a taste of a career area that intrigues you. If you apply these four best practices, you will set yourself up to get the most out of the experience and make progress in your career exploration process.

Editor's note: This is the one in a series offering expert tips on how teens can use their  summer job experiences to craft a winning college application essay or resume bullet point. 

Summer may be a time of relaxation for many, but for those looking to soon enter the workforce or attend college, it also can be a busy time. 

While some teens score lavish summer trips volunteering abroad, interning in labs or corporate offices, or become more worldly on trips paid by parents, many have more average experiences.

These experiences are still just as beneficial for their future. 

Many teens spend their summers scooping ice cream, working concession stands, taking movie tickets and other jobs that may not gleam in comparison to some of what their peers may be doing. These experiences still make for great college essays and resume builders. The key is being genuine about them. 

Colleges and hiring managers are looking for authenticity, something that can be gained from an ordinary-but-authentic job. How can you turn your real-life work experience into an killer essay or resume point?

Describe your job: 

"I come in [to the Jacob Burns Film Center] for around six hours a day, and what I do is I'm an usher, so I open and close theaters, I clean the theaters when the movies come out and when I'm not opening or closing theaters I help with concessions, where I make popcorn and prepare sodas and stuff for people. Other than that, if someone needs help getting to a theater or they're lost I'll show them. Or even when like a big figure comes in I can show them around." 

How did you get it?

I don't drive yet so I wanted a job that was relatively close to my house and I really wanted to branch out, I didn't want a typical job so I was like 'Oh, Jacob Burns, let me work there, let me try to apply for a job there.' And it was really interesting and it was different so that was what I was aiming for: getting a job that was different than what normal people get, like a lifeguard or something." 

What surprised you most about the work?

"Honestly, what surprised me most was the friendly environment. I've made many friends while working here and I really did not expect myself to. I connected with a lot of people through social media; it was really surprising how open and nice and friendly everyone was when I first started working here." 

Do you think this job will help you in the future?

"Oh yes, definitely. This job has really helped me develop a nice work ethic that I transferred over to school because I started working here last summer and going into my junior year I even noticed doing school work and doing homework and studying for tests was a lot easier for me because this was a good baseline for me. It really helped me develop my work ethic."

Tips to turn working at a movie theater into an eye-catching resume:  "Whenever you're in a role where you're interacting with masses of people, you're developing many interpersonal and communication skills from which you'll benefit over the course of your career," Augustine said.

The better you get at actively listening to and communicating with others, the easier it will be to do things like network and interview for future jobs, Augustine said. 

  • Key skills: Working as an usher or at a concession stand in a place like a movie theater allows for the development of customer service skills, communication skills, and conflict resolution skills, Augustine said. 
  • Work experience: Look to highlight instances that prove you were considered a dependable, hard-working employee, Augustine said. "Did you get your choice of shifts or did your manager specifically ask you to work on the more demanding days and shifts? In either case, it means you've developed a reputation at the theater for being a solid worker, which should be mentioned on your resume," Augustine said.

Fact-checking attacks on Walz’s military record by Vance and other Republicans

Republican vice presidential nominee and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance sought to negatively frame the 24-year military career of newly minted Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, Minnesota’s current governor.

“When the United States Marine Corps, when the United States of America, asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did it,” Vance  said  Aug. 7 at the Shelby, Michigan, police department. Vance  served  as a combat correspondent for the U.S. Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007 and deployed to Iraq for six months in 2005 but  did not experience combat .

Vance continued, “When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, do you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him. … I think it’s shameful.” At a different event, Vance used the phrase “ stolen valor ” to describe his accusations against Walz.

On X, Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, made a  claim similar to Vance’s,  writing, “Tim Walz TURNED HIS BACK on the soldiers in his unit because he was TOO afraid to deploy to Iraq!!”

Walz retired from the Minnesota National Guard in May 2005. He had submitted retirement paperwork five to seven months beforehand, Fox News  reported , citing the Minnesota National Guard.

In March 2005, Walz’s battalion had been notified about a possible deployment to Iraq within two years, Walz’s congressional campaign said in a  news release  that month, citing the National Guard Public Affairs Office. The Minnesota National Guard said the battalion then received an official order about mobilizing for deployment to Iraq in July 2005, after Walz retired.

Vance’s statement misleads by distorting the timeline. Walz had not been “asked by his country to go to Iraq,” as Vance said. He had been given a two-year window for a potential, not definite, deployment. And the official deployment notice came after Walz’s retirement.

Walz has said since before his Army retirement that he left to run for Congress. He filed his candidacy paperwork in February 2005, before the March 2005 notification about the potential deployment.

This is not a new line of attack. When Walz ran for a second term as Minnesota governor in 2022, his Republican opponent, who did not serve in the U.S. military,  criticized  Walz for leaving the National Guard before his unit deployed to Iraq.

Two retired Minnesota National Guard command sergeant majors also  penned a paid letter  to a Minnesota newspaper in 2018 claiming Walz “embellished and selectively omitted facts” about his military service. This letter resurfaced on X after Vice President Kamala Harris tapped Walz as her running mate. Other  guard   members  who served with Walz have defended him.

Walz’s spokesperson in the Minnesota governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment, and the Harris-Walz campaign declined to comment.

When reached by  The New York Times , a Harris-Walz campaign spokesperson didn’t provide new details about Walz’s retirement timeline and instead highlighted Walz’s record advocating for veterans and their families.

When contacted for comment, Vance’s campaign spokesperson sent links to the 2005 Walz campaign news release about the potential deployment and several news stories that quote former members of Walz’s battalion who were upset with him for not deploying to Iraq.

Walz’s military timeline

Walz enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard on April 8, 1981, two days after his 17th birthday. In 1996, Walz transferred to the Minnesota National Guard, where he served in the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery until he retired May 16, 2005, Army Lt. Col. Kristen Augé, Minnesota National Guard’s state public affairs officer, told PolitiFact in a statement.

During his service, Walz responded to floods and tornadoes, specialized in heavy artillery and was recognized for his proficiency in sharpshooting and hand grenades, Minnesota Public Radio  reported .

On Aug. 3, 2003, Walz and his battalion were deployed to Italy to support U.S. operations in Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom. Walz returned to Minnesota in April 2004, Augé said.

In May 2005, Walz, then 41, officially retired from the Minnesota National Guard to campaign for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District. He  filed  his statement of candidacy paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Feb. 10, 2005. Walz was elected to Congress in November 2006.

Al Bonnifield, who served with Walz in the Minnesota National Guard, told  Minnesota Public Radio  in 2018 that Walz weighed his retirement from the guard and congressional run “very heavy.” Bonnifield reiterated this to  The Washington Post  on Aug. 7.

“Would the soldier look down on him because he didn’t go with us? Would the common soldier say, ‘Hey, he didn’t go with us, he’s trying to skip out on a deployment?’ And he wasn’t,” Bonnifield said in 2018.

Doug Julin, who served as a more senior command sergeant major in Walz’s battalion, said Walz went over his head to get retirement approval before the unit’s deployment was official, because Julin would have “analyzed it and challenged him,” the  New York Post  reported Aug. 8.

Others who served in Walz’s battalion have said he “ditched” them and his actions were “dishonorable,” Fox News  reported .

Battalion’s deployment to Iraq

Walz’s unit received an “alert order” for mobilization to Iraq on July 14, 2005, Army Lt. Col. Ryan Rossman, Minnesota National Guard’s director of operations, told PolitiFact in a statement.

The unit received the official Department of the Army mobilization order Aug. 14, 2005, and mobilized Oct. 12, 2005, Rossman said.

The unit deployed to Iraq in March 2006 and was deployed for 19 months, according to an October 2007  congressional resolution .

The two retired Minnesota National Guard command sergeant majors who wrote the 2018 letter said the battalion received a “warning order” in early 2005 “to prepare to be mobilized for active duty for a deployment to Iraq.” They did not specify the warning letter’s date. Augé of the Minnesota National Guard told PolitiFact the agency doesn’t have information about any unofficial orders that might have been sent to the battalion.

An  archived March 20, 2005, press release  from Walz’s congressional campaign website said the National Guard Public Affairs Office announced March 17, 2005, “a possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard.” The announcement said a portion of Walz’s battalion could be mobilized to serve in Iraq within the next two years.

Walz said in his campaign’s press release, “As Command Sergeant Major I have a responsibility not only to ready my battalion for Iraq, but also to serve if called on. I am dedicated to serving my country to the best of my ability, whether that is in Washington, D.C., or in Iraq. I don’t want to speculate on what shape my campaign will take if I am deployed, but I have no plans to drop out of the race.”

Although Walz had been  promoted  in 2004 to command sergeant major, he retired in 2005 as a master sergeant,  one rank below  command sergeant major, “for benefit purposes because he did not complete additional coursework at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy,” Augé said.

Joseph Eustice, a 32-year military veteran who served in and led the same guard unit as Walz, told  The New York Times  and  NewsNation  in Aug. 7 interviews that when Walz decided to retire in May 2005, their unit had heard rumors of a potential deployment to Iraq, but had not received official orders.

Vance said, “When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, do you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him.”

Vance’s statement ignores that Walz’s unit was not officially ordered to go to Iraq until July 2005, two months after Walz officially retired.

After 24 years of military service, Walz said he retired from the Minnesota National Guard in May 2005 to run for Congress. He had submitted retirement paperwork five to seven months beforehand. He filed candidacy paperwork in February 2005.

There’s an element of truth in Vance’s statement because in March 2005, before Walz officially retired, his battalion was notified of possible deployment to Iraq within two years. Walz was aware at the time of his retirement that deployment could be possible and one of his fellow guard members described Walz’s retirement decision as “very heavy.”

But the March 2005 notification gave a time frame of two years for a possible — not definite — deployment that would not occur immediately, which is the way Vance’s statement framed it.

At PolitiFact, the burden of proof is on the speaker, Vance, who did not provide details to support his statement. We rate it Mostly False.

My First job interview experience | A life-long memorable one!

For freshers, facing the first interview is nothing less than having bittersweet feelings at its best. Not only are we too excited but also very nervous for those one-on-one interview rounds. The mixed feelings can be overwhelming and it either leaves you speechless or you end up blabbering things you regret later.

Even if you have given many interviews, your first job interview experience would remain as a memorable one forever. For some of you, it would have given a positive experience and for some, a negative experience.

But, for me, it was a turning point experience! It has changed the way I look at interviews.

(Please excuse me for posting a non-finance related article in my Personal finance related blog!)

More than 16 years ago… in 2007, my first job interview was for India’s first organized and modern Retail company– Foodworld .

About Foodworld : The supermarket chain was started nearly two decades ago (1996) as a division of Spencer & Co., part of the RPG Group, but became a separate company in 1999. Kishore Biyani-promoted Future Retail has later bought Foodworld Supermarkets in 2018.

Let me now narrate the entire interview process..!

It was 2003, I was in the final semester of MBA from ICFAI Business School, Chennai. My institute’s placement cell had come to know that Foodworld was looking out for Store Manager-Trainees to manage their upcoming supermarket chains in Andhra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerla.

For an MBA graduate, getting into an entry level managerial post as the first employment is a decent achievement to kick-start one’s career. I was all excited along with my other Marketing-major batch-mates.

If I remember correctly, around 6 of us (batch mates) went for the interview, which was organized at the Spencer’s corporate office – Spencer Plaza, Anna Salai, Chennai.

The same day, job aspirants from other renowned institutes had also come to attend the interview at Spencers.

We were all briefed on the selection process, which had three rounds – i) written exam, ii) face to face interview with Middle level manager + HR manager & ii) face to face interview with the CEO of Food world.

I was not at all tensed about the interview process but was super excited to give it my best shot.

My First job interview experience

The first round was more about aptitude, marketing, statistics and general management topics. The second round was with middle-level marketing manager and HR manager. They were very impressed with my academic record.

  • I was a state-first rank holder in my Intermediate Board Exams.
  • Was the University topper in Graduation &
  • Was the batch topper in PG.

I had cleared the first two rounds of the selection process without much hassle and was all set for the final showdown with the CEO of the company.

That day, I was very clear in my mind – not to be desperate and be as confident as possible. My much-awaited interview slot (I was the second one to be interviewed) had come and I finally entered the CEO’s spacious room.

  • CEO – Hi Sreekanth, good afternoon, be seated.
  • Sreekanth – Very good afternoon sir,
  • CEO – Hope, you had lunch?
  • Sreekanth – Not yet sir
  • CEO – Call me Raghu (Raghu Pillai was the then CEO of Food world)
  • Sreekanth – Ok sir
  • CEO Raghu Pillai – smiled and asked, are you comfortable with me sitting like this and watching cricket (TV was in mute though) ? Do you like cricket?
  • Sreekanth – I am comfortable and yes, I like playing and watching cricket!
  • CEO Raghu Pillai – Ok Sreekanth, you may leave now!

The total time took by him to interview me was around 2 to 3 minutes. I remember that he took around 15 minutes of time to interview the first job aspirant.

By the time I came out of the Spencer Plaza building, I understood the possible mistake that I had committed on that day! (The very next day, the HR team had informed me that I could not make it to the final list of selected candidates..)

So, what really happened in those 2 minutes? How could he come to a conclusion that I am not the right candidate for the job in just 2 minutes? Why did he ask, was I comfortable or not during the interview?

Let me now narrate it for you..

As soon as I entered the CEO’s room, I saw he was very casually seated on his chair with his legs on top of a desk (the legs were not facing me though, like as in the below picture) . He was watching cricket on tv (it was on mute!).

Though I was really comfortable with his behavior, I should have objected the way he was sitting in an interview. I realized that I am interviewing them just as much as they’re interviewing me. The interview etiquette should be followed by both the parties and its not applicable just for the job aspirant.

This experience has left a long-lasting impression on me! From that day, wherever and whenever I go for an interview, I make  sure to ask relevant questions at the end of the interview, say ‘NO’ if I don’t like anything, say ‘don’t know’ if I am not aware of anything, as much as possible to be open and straight-forward and be honest!

Believe me that I have a whopping 90% success rate in clearing the interviews. This strength of mine turned out to be a bane as I ended up being a job hopper (not for money!) .

My gyaan about interviews :

  • Always remember that it’s a win-win situation and don’t be desperate.
  • Your Aptitude is important in initial rounds of the job selection and in the final rounds its your ATTITUDE which matters the most!
  • Your academic achievements may take you till the company door-steps but that alone will not win you the job.
  • Do not job hop for Salary hike.
  • If you are employed in a wrong industry, switch to the right one as early in your career as possible.
  • Don’t ever be over-confident during the interview process.
  • Keep acquiring new skill sets relevant to your job.
  • Work hard for the interviews but be smart during the interviews!
  • A failure in an interview is not the end of the road. “ A bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the turn .”

Deserted: The U.S. Military's Sexual Assault Crisis as a Cost of War

Over the past decade, the U.S. military has implemented policies to promote gender equality, notably lifting the ban on women in combat roles in 2013 and opening all military jobs to women by 2016. Yet, even as U.S. military policy reforms during the “War on Terror” appear to reflect greater equality, violent patterns of abuse and misogyny continued within military workplaces.

This author of this report found that sexual assault prevalence in the military is likely two to four times higher than official government estimations. Based on a comparison of available data collected by the U.S. Department of Defense to independent data, the research estimates there were 75,569 cases of sexual assault in 2021 and 73,695 cases in 2023. On average, over the course of the war in Afghanistan, 24 percent of active-duty women and 1.9 percent of active-duty men experienced sexual assault. The report highlights how experiences of gender inequality are most pronounced for women of color, who experience intersecting forms of racism and sexism and are one of the fastest-growing populations within the military. Independent data also confirm queer and trans service members’ disproportionately greater risk for sexual assault.

The report notes that during the post-9/11 wars, the prioritization of force readiness above all else allowed the problem of sexual assault to fester, papering over internal violence and gender inequalities within military institutions.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, appointed the following individuals as independent senators to fill vacancies in the Senate:

  • Charles Adler, for Manitoba
  • Tracy Muggli, for Saskatchewan

Charles Adler emigrated from Hungary at a young age and went on to become a renowned radio host, journalist, and influential voice in Canada for over 50 years. Throughout his career, he has used his platform to champion human rights and Canadian democracy. Recognitions he has received include a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Tracy Muggli is a registered social worker, senior executive, and former provincial public servant with over 35 years of experience in the health and social services sectors. She has long been an active member of her community and currently serves as the Executive Director of St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal and the (Saskatchewan) Premier’s Award for Excellence in Public Service.

These new senators were recommended by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments and chosen using a merit-based process open to all Canadians. Introduced in 2016, this process ensures senators are independent, reflect Canada’s diversity, and are able to tackle the broad range of challenges and opportunities facing the country.

  • The Senate is the Upper House in Canada’s parliamentary democracy. It unites a diverse group of accomplished Canadians in service of their country. Created to counterbalance representation by population in the House of Commons, the Senate not only defends regional interests, it also creates a space for the voices of historically underrepresented groups like Indigenous Peoples, racialized communities, and women.
  • Candidate submissions were reviewed by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, which provided recommendations to the Prime Minister. The Board is guided in its work by public, transparent, non-partisan, and merit-based criteria to identify highly qualified candidates for the Senate.
  • With today’s announcement, there have been 84 independent appointments to the Senate made on the advice of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. All of them were recommended by the Board.
  • Under the Canadian Constitution, the Governor General appoints individuals to the Senate. By convention, senators are appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister.
  • Once appointed by the Governor General, new senators join their peers to examine and revise legislation, investigate national issues, and represent regional, provincial and territorial, and minority interests – important functions in a modern democracy.

Today, companies of all types are called on to demonstrate integrated, cross-functional, project-based teamwork in their operations.

New ideas about teamwork are emerging, some based on experience, some guided by new practices, some made up on the fly. But none of this has yet cohered into a systematic approach to improving how teams work.

In this article, the authors set out new principles of teamwork that focus on continuous, real-time testing, learning, analysis, adaptation, and improvement.

Collaboration is more complex than ever—and more difficult to get right. Here’s how organizations can build better teams.

The Way Forward

The authors set out a new, systematic approach to teamwork that relies on continuous, real-time testing, learning, analysis, adaptation, and improvement.

Not that long ago, teams were typically composed of people with similar skills working in the same place. Their efforts were based on the idea that by working together in a well-managed process, they could deliver replicable results. They primarily operated with efficiency and effectiveness but would frequently encounter obstacles, such as internal siloes or bureaucratic processes, that hindered their overall performance. In response, they began to innovate how they worked together, establishing the groundwork for a more flexible, cross-functional approach to their rituals and practices. From the Skunk Works engineers of the 1950s to Brazilian football in the 1960s to the aviation and surgical collaborations that delivered stunning improvements in the 1990s and early 2000s, organizations have continually searched for ways to enhance their teams’ effectiveness.

Harris says she supports eliminating federal taxes on tips

Vice President Kamala Harris pledged Saturday to eliminate taxes on tipped wages for service workers, matching a proposal from former President Donald Trump.

During a rally in Las Vegas she held alongside her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris praised the work of the Culinary Workers Union, which endorsed her Friday, and vowed to continue to support policies that would benefit the union’s workers.

“When I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage, and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said.

Following up on her comments at the Las Vegas rally, a Harris campaign official clarified that her push for to eliminate taxes on tips would require legislation. If elected president, Harris would work with Congress to craft a proposal that mandated an income limit and applied strict requirements to prevent hedge fund managers and lawyers from structuring their compensation to take advantage of the policy.

Harris would push the proposal with an increase in the minimum wage, as well, the official said.

In response to Harris’ remarks, Trump accused her of stealing his proposed policy in a post to his Truth Social platform.

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy,” he wrote. He added that she mentioned the proposal only for “Political Purposes.”

“This was a TRUMP idea,” he said. “She can only steal from me.”

Trump announced a policy proposal to eliminate taxes on tips at a June rally in Las Vegas. Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt did not offer specifics about the proposal at the time; she told NBC News in an email in June that Trump would “ask Congress to eliminate taxes on tips.”

Several congressional Republicans have introduced bills to exempt tip income following Trump’s policy announcement. Trump’s campaign pitch, however, had drawn mixed reactions from Republicans, with some expressing skepticism of the idea because of the rising national debt and uncertainty over whether it’s fair to workers who don’t receive tips.

Some restaurant workers and advocates also had lukewarm reactions to Trump’s proposal, saying they prefer increases in base wages to eliminating taxes on tips, NBC News reported .

A Yale University analysis of a bill led by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called the “No Tax on Tips Act,” found that it would affect only an estimated 2.5% of the workforce and 5% of workers in the bottom 25% of earners.

Asked whether Harris would support Republican-led bills to exempt tip income, a Harris campaign official reiterated that eliminating taxes on tips would require legislation and that Harris, if elected, would work with Congress to craft a proposal about the policy.

Asked in June about Trump’s proposal, Lael Brainard, director of the White House National Economic Council, pointed to restrictions on political activity by West Wing officials that are outlined in the Hatch Act.

Brainard also told reporters in a June call that President Joe Biden, whose re-election campaign was active at the time, has “fought for real solutions that actually address workers’ legitimate need for fair wages” and has better proposals for Nevada wage earners, such as a higher minimum wage and overtime protections.

“So our view is that the meaningful set of policy changes that would really lift the living standards of Nevada workers and workers all around the country would be to raise the minimum wage and eliminate the tipped minimum wage, leading to $6,000 more in income per year,” she said.
