So get going, and find out the best solutions.

Sounds interesting. Making your own barometer might help you predict the weather. You could actually compare your forecast with the news telecast. But before I get you even more excited, think of how you would go about it. Research a bit on this idea and come up with things you’ll need and instructions to make a barometer. Your project is going to rock!

Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means that its viscosity changes with pressure. Oobleck is what happens when corn starch and water are mixed together at the right consistency to create a goopy mess.

18. Gummy Bear Osmosis

The simplest gummy bear project for 6th graders might be to examine how gumminess relates to pH level. To test this hypothesis students would take a whole tray of gummy bears with fruit juice (choose one juice), half with water, and half with vinegar.

28. Static Electricity band

When we did this experiment, it made the water in the bowl feel like it was alive. This can be done using a light bulb to make a tiny bit of electricity in a copper wire. Once that’s done, you place two metal sheets on opposite ends of the light bulb to form a bridge with an equal amount of metal on each side.

Get students excited about the research topic with introductory slide decks

Each unit comes with introductory slide decks that preview what students will be learning about over the course of the unit. The slide decks spark classroom discussion, hooking students from the very first lesson.

In Our Changing Oceans (6th grade), students discuss what it would be like to be an oceanographer, preview the texts they will be reading about issues facing our oceans, and hear about the key skills they will be learning throughout the unit.

CommonLit’s research units are centered around informational texts that provide students with key background information and research to eventually support their end-of-unit essay.

Four core texts make up the Essential Reading Lessons for 6th grade. These texts teach students about the need to protect Antarctica and how plastic debris, sea level rise, and overfishing are affecting the world’s oceans. These texts teach students important facts they will need to cite in their end-of-unit research papers.

Supplemental texts allow students to dig deeply into independent research

Each unit comes with a large selection of supplemental texts to provide students with more facts and information to use in their research paper.

In middle school, students use the provided supplemental texts to further inform their research. In high school, students learn about finding reliable sources and can use both provided supplemental texts on CommonLit and texts from additional sources in their research.

For example, in Our Changing Oceans, 6th graders choose to research one of three topics related to ocean changes.

In high school, students are taught about the beginning of the research process, including developing a research question, finding reliable sources, and reading and taking notes. Students in 9th and 10th grade can use the supplemental texts as well as texts found in books or on other online learning platforms.

Students learn about the research process and how to craft research papers throughout the unit

Each unit includes lessons about conducting research so students can be prepared for the end-of-unit research paper. Scaffolded supports help students move through the research process. In lower grades, certain steps in the process, like developing a research question and finding reliable sources, are provided for students.

Students learn about writing research papers during writing lessons. In 8th Grade, students learn how to discuss and outline research papers. Then, they learn how to write a counterclaim, format a Works Cited page, and use in-text citations properly. Each of these research-paper focused writing lessons will prepare students to answer the end-of-unit essay.

Students also explore how to conduct independent research in research-specific lessons. In 8th Grade, teachers explain that they have provided the first two steps of the research process for students: developing a research question and finding reliable sources.

In the lesson, students are taught how to use a graphic organizer to take notes on each text they read in preparation for their research paper. Students also engage in an Introduction to Independent Research lesson, where they learn about steps of the research process and begin reading and taking notes on supplemental texts. Later, students engage in a discussion lesson that will help them synthesize all the information they have learned throughout the unit by discussing the research question with classmates.

Related Media Explorations are a unique cornerstone of our ELA curriculum. These interactive tasks bring our research units to life and provide background information for students to use in their research.

In 8th Grade,  students learn about the way football culture has changed over the past few decades as scientists learn more about the long-term effects of repeated concussions. Students watch three videos that explain the culture of football in the past and present, and analyze statistics about concussions before discussing the question: “Who is most responsible for shaping mindsets about tackling in football: players, coaches, parents, or fans?”

Discussion lessons help students synthesize information in preparation for their research paper

Discussion lessons in each research unit provide students with the opportunity to practice citing evidence from sources, explain their evidence to classmates, and practice synthesizing information. These conversations give students the chance to gain new perspectives, receive feedback on their ideas, and boost their confidence before delving into the research paper.

In 8th Grade, students synthesize their ideas about the research question through a class discussion. After the discussion, students have an opportunity to outline their research paper using both their discussion notes and the note-taking graphic organizer they have used throughout the unit.

Participate in an optional final project that fosters creative thinking and collaboration

Each research unit comes with an optional end-of-unit project to further engage students through project based learning. These optional projects help foster student creativity and collaboration. Students can work with a partner or group to complete the task.

In 8th grade, students must make a brochure providing prospective parents and student athletes with factual information about the benefits and risks about contact sports so families can make an informed decision about participating. Students must work with a peer with an opposing view on the topic so the brochure is factual and unbiased. This task encourages teamwork and collaboration between peers with differing views.

What Is the Extended Research Project?

The Extended Research Project (ERP) for students in the sixth and seventh grades is a project in History class beginning in November in Fall Semester and culminating in a presentation in late March.  Through their work on the ERP, students are able to build their research, writing, citing and presentation skills.

The ERP in 6th Grade

Overall goals are to:

  • Choose an historical topic from a prescribed list that is relevant, with available sources, meets the assignment requirements and is of interest to the student
  • Research the topic thoroughly
  • Learn and use primary and secondary sources
  • Learn how to write about a topic with authentic voice and proper citations
  • Introduce students to the library databases and resources available to them at WSA
  • Learn how to use NoodleTools in order to keep track of works cited
  • Learn how to determine if a source is credible and to extract information from that source
  • Learn how to find and use sources that are appropriate for the age
  • Learn how to present information in an engaging and contemporary method
  • Discuss their research with unfamiliar yet supportive audiences

Scope and Timeline:

It is the expectation that the majority of the work on the sixth grade ERP will be done in history class rather than at home.

Fall Semester:  Sixth grade students will learn proper word processing, keyboarding, presentation and web platform skills within the curriculum of their Intro to Technology course.  At the same time, the ERP work will be concentrated in history class with specific writing and grammatical lessons supporting the project taught in English class.

By December:   S tudents will have chosen their topic, done the bulk of their research, documented the research on NoodleTools, practiced scaffolded writing assignments in support of the project and developed a thesis statement.

During January, February and March: Students will be concentrating on writing about their topics in anticipation of starting to develop a website as the final product.  They will use an online webtool such as Weebly to develop a website with the following components included within the framework of their site:

  • Background Information of the Event
  • Narrative Depiction of Events
  • Historical Significance of the Event
  • Specific Case Study or Narrative Story Relevant
  • Bibliography

March 27, 2020:  Parents and other students will be invited to an evening event where sixth and seventh grade students will share their projects with attendees. Sixth graders will be expected to sit at a designated computer station with their website available for guests to view and ask questions of the student. Specific teachers, including the classroom teacher will be assigned as “Committee Reviewers” who will assess the students work at that time. 

The ERP in 7th Grade

Overall goals  are to:

  • Choose a person of note in which to research
  • Research the person thoroughly
  • Learn how to write a five paragraph (or more) essay with authentic voice and proper citations
  • Remind students of the library databases and resources available to them at WSA
  • Utilize NoodleTools in order to keep track of works cited
  • Practice how to determine if a source is credible and to extract information from that source
  • Practice finding and using sources that are appropriate for the age
  • Utilize research to prepare an original monologue written from the perspective of that person or someone close to that person
  • Present the memorized 3-minute monologue to an audience of parents and peers (and the sixth graders) in costume

It is the expectation that the majority of the work on the seventh grade ERP will be done in their History and English classes rather than at home.

Fall Semester:   Seventh grade students will re-orient themselves to proper word processing skills and protocols as well as the library databases and the use of NoodleTools.  At the same time, the ERP work will be concentrated in History class with specific writing lessons supporting the project taught in English class.  In addition, the second semester speech class will support public speaking techniques in preparation.

By December:   Students will have chosen their person, done the bulk of their research, documented the research on NoodleTools, and completed a minimum five paragraph essay about the author. 

During January, February and March:  Students will finalize their monologues and costumes and spend significant time rehearsing for their monologue.

March 27, 2020:   Parents and other students will be invited to an evening event where sixth and seventh grade students will share their projects with attendees. Seventh graders will be expected to perform the monologue in front of the audience of attendees. Specific teachers, including the classroom teacher will be assigned as “Committee Reviewer’s” who will assess the students work at that time and ask questions after the student’s performance. 

Research FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How many sources do I need?

You will learn how to get information from both primary and secondary sources and will need to list those in your bibliography under separate headings for each type.  The guide line is:

  • Three Primary Sources of various types including one text, one image and one additional type of your choice
  • Five Secondary Sources with at least two books, one periodical (journal or magazine), and three web sites
  • Three Photo or Image Sources

Wikipedia is a good place to begin research on topics and to get ideas but Wikipedia will not be an acceptable source in your bibliography.

How will I manage my bibliographic information?

You will use an online platform called NoodleTools to manage your bibliography which also will automatically format the final hard copy version for you. You will have a log in and password that you can use to access NoodleTools from any computer with Internet access. Your log in and password are managed by Susan Trower if you forget them.  Need help knowing how to use NoodleTools?  See the NoodleTools Guide!

How do I sort primary sources and secondary sources in NoodleTools?

Log in to NoodleTools. Click on your NHD project. Enter in the source. After entering it should return you to an overall list of all the sources in the bibliography for this project. At the bottom of the list there is a field that says “Select an attribute”. Click on the source you want to classify and then select “primary” or “secondary” for that source.  Do this for all your sources. Once done with that return to the top of the list of bibliography list. In the upper right corner there is a “Sort” field. As a default, keep the sources sorted “Alphabetic”.  When you are ready to print, sort your sources “primary/secondary” in the Sort field.  Any source not classified as primary/secondary will not show up on the list when it is sorted by “primary/secondary.”  

Where can I get more help with knowing how to use NoodleTools?

Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is the central idea of your paper and states an arguable opinion. It informs the reader of your focus and gives a general overview of the order of analysis it will follow. It appears in the first paragraph of a paper; on the main page of a web site; clearly articulated in a monologue performance.  It is essential to do preliminary research on your topic before you try to write your thesis or else you will end up with a weak statement.

Your thesis statement must be clearly present with no question whatsoever of its existence. The worst thing you can have is for someone who has seen your website or watched your monologue and left thinking, “It was a nice website (or performance) but what was the thesis statement?”  

The ease with which the Internet makes information available makes sometimes tempts students to borrow information without properly documenting its source. Poor planning and organization can make it easy to lose track of what you read and where you read it. When you present material that contains any ideas that are not yours alone without properly citing or crediting the original author; that is plagiarism.

It is important to carefully keep track of your information and sources in your paper management system as well as build your bibliography “as you go”.

Plagiarism is taken very seriously. Plagiarism can be detected with careful reading, simple Internet searches and plagiarism software. If a student submits work in first draft form that contains plagiarized material, the student’s teachers will make every effort to ensure the student’s understanding of what it is and how to avoid it. If any work is submitted in final draft form containing plagiarized material, the student’s grade will be severely affected.

Ah, teaching sixth grade. Students fall into that sweet spot of demanding to be taken seriously but aren’t too cool to act out stories or play a group game. The wide range of sixth grade interests, abilities, and skills can be tricky to navigate, so we’ve gathered tips and ideas from our teacher community and around the web. You’ll love these ideas whether you’re a newbie to sixth grade or a longtime veteran.

The First Days of School

1. introduce yourself creatively.

There’s nothing quite like the very first moment of the first day of school when you’re teaching sixth grade. You stand at the front of the classroom looking at all those expectant faces for the very first time. Then you have your chance to introduce yourself to your students, to let them know who you are and what they can expect over the year to come. We love these creative ways to introduce yourself .

2. Start the year with an icebreaker

Get to know your students right away—they’re likely new to the school as well as your class. Check out our icebreakers for middle school students .

3. Ask thoughtful questions

Four questions on colorful backgrounds to ask students when you're teaching 6th grade.

Sixth graders (and most middle schoolers, for that matter) aren’t known for offering up their opinions or thoughts as readily as younger students. Come prepared with questions that are easy for kids to answer. Check out our favorite introduction questions for middle schoolers .

4. Ask silly questions too

You’d be surprised at the depth and complexity of your students’ answers to silly questions, like “Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck?” Their responses will tell you so much about their personalities in the best ways. 5. Know how to handle student differences

Sixth graders often struggle to understand and deal with other kids’ behaviors. Here’s how one teacher handles it: “I often ask my sixth grade students, ‘Did he choose to be like that?’ If they are reasonable, they will say no, and then I say, ‘Well you have a choice about how you will respond to that, and that will show everyone what sort of person you are.’ End of matter.” — Amy K.

6. Establish a culture of kindness

9. Build routine

“It’s the nature of the middle school beast. You just have to get used to having to say the same thing day in and day out. We are two-thirds of the way through the school year and I still say, every day, ‘Turn around, look at the person behind you, take their paper, hand it up.’ Build routine and then stick to routine.” — Tracy S.

10. Be prepared for cyberbullying

Sixth graders seem young, but they’re no strangers to the internet—42% of kids have been bullied online. Make sure you know how to address cyberbullying. One of the best ways to do so is getting kids to report it and address it by being “upstanders.”

12. Include student photos in your sub folder

OK, this idea comes from a kindergarten blog, but we’ve known enough mischievous sixth graders who like to trade places when there’s a substitute. As part of your sub folder, include student photos along with their names so there’s no confusion about who’s who.

13. Remember that consequences don’t always need to be immediate

When I first started teaching middle school, I’d often get stuck feeling like I had to have the perfect response on the spot. What do you do when you turn around to see a student moving ceiling tiles with a wand he made from attaching 13 markers? (Note: I still don’t know. I think I would just laugh.)

Instead of putting pressure on yourself to respond perfectly in that moment, say something like, “I need to think about how to respond to this. I’ll let you know what I’ve decided at the beginning of class tomorrow.”

14. Laminate your checklists

15. Help students make up for lost time

Put all the materials that an absent student will need upon return—homework assignments, worksheets, discussion notes—in one place. Then, when the student returns, they can quickly select the material they missed without disrupting class.

16. Use expert groups

Group students into four equal “Expert Groups” that are strategically organized into heterogeneous groups by ability. Then, give each group a topic to cover or a task to accomplish. After the experts have learned about their topic or completed their task, they move into new groups to share what they learned with one another. This idea comes from Go to Teach .

19. Plan to let kids move

If you don’t plan it into the lesson, sixth graders will fidget, squirm, or find an excuse to get out of their seats. Assigning them partners that require them to get up and move, passing out sticky notes that they can record answers on and post them on the wall, or having them stand during math fluency drills are all ways to keep them moving.

21. Celebrate more than meeting standards

“I make it a habit to celebrate everything. It is easy to become discouraged if your goals have to be ‘meet standards,’ ‘be proficient,’ ‘read at grade level,’ etc. In many classrooms, there are a few (or more!) kids who may not meet those goals during your year together. I tell my students that we celebrate moving forward. I try to recognize kindness and good character whenever possible, and I try to recognize those moments that matter in a different way. Whether it is having a pencil two days in a row, finishing a book, remembering 8 x 7 = 56, or using the word of the week in written or spoken language. In many ways, the encouragement buoys my spirits as much as the students’!” —Joy

22. Get ahead of the piles

The best way to deal with it is a healthy dose of humor. Sometimes you’ll want a traditional writing assignment to build students’ analytical skills. Here’s a fun science project that you can do at home! All you need is: 

  • A hard-boiled egg
  • A glass bottle with a narrow neck.

Place the egg on top of the bottle opening and gently apply pressure to push it down into the bottle. The egg will start to descend into the bottle, but then it will get stuck.

Now, use your mouth to create suction on the bottle. This will cause the air pressure inside the bottle to decrease, which will allow the egg to be pulled further down into the bottle.

Keep applying suction until the egg is completely inside the bottle. Now wasn’t that cool?

Planning to design a biodome for class 6 science project is a great way to learn about ecosystems and the environment. By creating a miniature version of a natural ecosystem, you can observe how different plants and animals interact with each other.

This project is perfect for any science class , including biology, ecology, and Earth science. With careful planning, you can create a detailed and fascinating project that will teach you about ecosystems while also providing a fun way to learn about the natural world.

Potatoes are a great source of energy and can be used to generate electricity. There are many ways to do this, but one of the most popular is to use a potato battery. This is a simple science project that anyone can do at home with a few inexpensive materials.

To make a potato battery, you will need:

  • Two metal screws
  • One alligator clip lead
  • One piece of copper wire
  • One zinc nail

Start by poking the two metal screws into opposite ends of the potato. Then, take the alligator clip lead and attach it to one of the screws. Next, take the copper wire and wrap it around the other screw. Finally, take the zinc nail and insert it into the potato so that it touches the copper wire.

That’s it! Your potato battery is now complete. To test your battery, simply touch the free end of the alligator clip lead to the zinc nail. 

Owls are amazing predators that can take down prey much larger than themselves. One of the ways they do this is by swallowing their prey whole and then regurgitating the indigestible parts in the form of a pellet. These pellets are great for science projects because they contain all the bones and fur of the owl’s prey.

To dissect an owl pellet, start by breaking it open with your hands or a tool like a screwdriver. Once you have access to the contents, sort through them to find any bones or teeth. These can be studied to identify what kind of animal the owl ate. The fur can also be examined to determine what kind of animal it came from.

To construct a pair of model lungs, you will need:

  • 2 clear plastic soda bottles
  • A pen or marker
  • Construction paper

Cut the bottom off of both soda bottles. On one bottle, use the pen or marker to draw a line around the middle. Cut along this line. Repeat step 2 on the other bottle. Now, take one of the halves of a bottle without a top and tape a straw to the side. This will be your “inhale” tube. Do the same with the other half of bottle, but tape the straw to the opposite side – this will be your “exhale” tube.

Place both halves back together, matching up the sides without straws. Tape them together at the seam. Cut out two lung shapes from construction paper using scissors. Glue these onto either side of your model lungs (opposite of where the tubes are taped on).

To build a heart pump model, you will need the following materials:

  • 1 empty plastic water bottle
  • 1 small balloon

Cut the bottom off of the plastic water bottle. Stretch the small balloon over the opening of the bottle. Secure it in place with tape. Use the marker to draw a heart on the balloon. Cut a small hole in the center of the heart. Blow up the balloon through the hole until it is about half full.

Tie off the end of the balloon to keep the air inside. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it in one hand. With your other hand, gently squeeze and release the balloon to make the “heart” pump!

Fidget spinners are a great way to help kids learn about inertia ! When you spin a fidget spinner, you are actually using inertia to keep it going. The more mass an object has, the more inertia it has. That’s why it’s important to use a heavier fidget spinner if you want it to spin for a long time.

There are lots of other fun science experiments you can do with fidget spinners too! Try testing how long different types of fidget spinners will spin for, or see how far you can make one fly when you throw it. There are endless possibilities for fun and learning with fidget spinners!

If you want to amaze your classmates with a truly mind-blowing science project, try the Archimedes squeeze. This simple experiment demonstrates the power of air pressure. All you need is a large container of water and a small object that will float in water.

To start, fill the container with water and place the object floating on top. Then, take a deep breath and blow into the container while keeping your mouth open wide. The object should be forced down into the water by the force of your breath.

Now take your thumb and finger and make a seal around the neck of the container. Then, quickly remove your hand from the neck of the container. The seal should hold and the object should be forced up out of the water and into the air!

The Archimedes squeeze is a great way to amaze your friends and classmates with the power of air pressure. Try it today!

When it comes to building a mobile stand, there are a few things you’ll need to take into account. First, you’ll need to decide what type of stand you want to build. There are two main types of mobile stands: those that sit on a table or desk, and those that can be mounted to a wall.

If you’re opting for a table or desk-based stand, you’ll have to make sure that the stand is stable and won’t tip over easily. You’ll also want to consider how easy it will be to move the stand around; something with wheels may be ideal in this case.

For a wall-mounted stand, you’ll have to make sure that the mount is secure and won’t come loose easily. You’ll also want to consider how easy it will be to access your phone while it’s mounted; something with a swing arm may be ideal. Once you’ve decided on the type of stand you want to build, gather your materials and get started!

To perform this class 6 science project, collect some milk from the grocery store. You will need about two cups.

Pour the milk into a saucepan and heat it over low heat until it becomes lukewarm. Do not let the milk boil. Next, add one tablespoon of vinegar to the milk and stir gently. Continue stirring until all the liquid has turned into small clumps.

Strain the curds from the whey by lining a colander with cheesecloth and place it over a bowl. Pour the curdled milk into the colander and allow it to drain for about an hour. The whey will drip into the bowl below while the curds remain in the colander.

Then, transfer the curds to a clean piece of cheesecloth and squeeze out any remaining liquid. You should now have a ball of wet, white cheese in your cheesecloth.

Congratulations, you have just made ricotta cheese! To turn ricotta cheese into plastic, remove the water from the cheese. For this, place the cheesecloth bundle in a colander and set it over a bowl. Put a lid on the colander and place it in the fridge. Let it sit overnight so that the water can drain out of the cheese.

In the morning, you should have a dry, crumbly ricotta cheese. Congratulations, you’ve made plastic! 

If you want to change the color of a liquid instantly, all you need is: 

  • Some food coloring
  • A clear container. 

Fill the container with the liquid you would like to change, then add a few drops of food coloring. The more food coloring you add, the darker the color will be. Stir the mixture until the color is evenly distributed, then enjoy your new creation!

Assuming you have all the necessary materials, assembling a steady hand game is a relatively simple process.

The first step is to put the baseplate on a flat surface. Then, take the two metal rods and insert them into the holes on either side of the baseplate.

Next, take the plastic ball and place it on top of the metal rods. Finally, put the cover over the ball and secure it in place with the screws. 

For this class 6 science project, you will need:

  • Two identical rockets
  • A launchpad and

Place the rockets on the launchpad side by side. Fill one rocket with fuel and ignite it.

As the first rocket takes off, simultaneously launch the second rocket. Observe and record the results of your experiment .

If you’re looking for a really fun and unique science project, try sending water down with string! This project is perfect for kids of all ages and can be done with materials you probably already have around the house.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A clear plastic cup
  • A piece of string or yarn

To get started, fill your cup with water and tie the string around the top. Make sure the string is long enough that it hangs over the edge of the cup. Next, use the tape to secure the string in place. Now, carefully turn the cup upside down and watch as the water slowly flows down the string!

This project is a great way to learn about gravity and how it affects liquids. Plus, it’s just plain fun to watch!

You can make a naked egg by removing the shell without breaking the egg. It’s a neat science trick that you can do at home with just a few supplies.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • A glass or container that the egg can fit in snugly

Start by putting the egg in the vinegar and water solution. Make sure that the entire egg is covered by the liquid. Let the egg sit in the solution for 24 hours. 

After 24 hours, remove the egg from the solution and Rinse it off with water. Gently rub the egg to remove any leftover bits of shell. The egg is now naked! You can try blowing it up like a balloon, or bouncing it on the floor (it won’t break!).

You will need:

  • A small DC motor
  • One AA battery
  • A small piece of cardboard
  • A thumbtack or pushpin
  • Some insulated wire (about 18 inches)
  • Tape (any kind will do)

Begin by taping the AA battery to the piece of cardboard. Then, use the thumbtack or pushpin to make a hole in the top of the battery. Cut a small slit in the cardboard, next to the hole you just made. This is where your wires will go.

Strip about ½ inch of insulation off each end of your wire. Feed one end of the wire through the slit in the cardboard and twist it around the positive (longer) lead of the motor. 

Do the same with the other end of the wire, but twist it around the negative (shorter) lead of the motor instead. Finally, put a drop of glue or some tape over each connection to keep them from slipping apart.

That’s it! When you connect your battery to the leads on your motor, it should spin!

To build a paper plane launcher, you will need:

  • A popsicle stick
  • A rubber band
  • A paperclip

First, take the popsicle stick and tape the rubber band to it. Then, take the paperclip and bend it so that it forms a hook. Tape the paperclip to the other end of the popsicle stick. Your paper plane launcher is now complete!

To use it, simply put a paper plane on the hook and pull back on the rubber band. Let go and watch your plane fly!

If you’re looking for an unforgettable science project, why not try building a Ferris wheel? This project is perfect for budding engineers of all ages. Plus, it’s a great way to learn about physics and how energy can be used to create motion.

  • A large piece of cardboard
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • Glue or tape
  • String or yarn
  • A small weight (a paperclip or coin will work)

Cut out a large circle from the cardboard. This will be the base of your Ferris wheel. Using the ruler or measuring tape, mark out eight evenly spaced points around the edge of the circle. These will be the locations for your Ferris wheel supports. 

Cut eight strips of cardboard, each about 4 inches long. Glue or tape each support strip to the base at the marked points. Make sure that the supports are standing up straight. 

Tie string around each support, about 2 inches from the top. The string should be long enough to reach the ground when your Ferris wheel is complete. 6. Tie the other end of each string to a small weight (a paperclip or coin). This will help keep your Ferris wheel upright when it’s spinning.

For all active Master Gardener Volunteers - if you are not a Master Gardener and wish to volunteer please visit the regular volunteer page at https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/farmmarketvol2024_228

Please read all descriptions and time commitment before joining each project.

CCE Nassau Farmers Market Master Gardener Table at Eisenhower Park:

The CCE Nassau Farmers Market is a great way for Master Gardeners to share their knowledge with members of the Nassau County community! We are requesting 1-3 volunteers to be at our Master Gardener Table on Saturdays at the market! MGVs will speak with market visitors about what we do, direct them towards gardening resources, answer questions, and all-around share their passion for gardening with members of the community. MGVs will also have the opportunity to help with other market activities and programs, like the collection of soil samples and youth gardening activities.

The Farmers Market takes place on Saturday mornings from 9am - 12pm, from July 6th through October 26th. It is located at Eisenhower Park, parking field 8, near the Cornell Cooperative Extension Administration Building and the intersection of Merrick and Stewart Avenues. 

All materials will be provided and set up prior to the market for a general information booth. However, if you would like to focus on a specific gardening topic, or feature an activity, please speak with Jennifer Hochuli. The table is what you make it to be!
