Literature of Wildlife

  • Journal of Wildlife Management Citation Style

Introduction

Wildlife literature is part of the larger scientific literature and is composed of applied research in wildlife and basic research in related disciplines. Scientific literature is the principal medium for communicating the results of scientific research and represents a permanent record of the collective achievements of the scientific community. This scientific knowledge base is composed of the individual "end products" of scientific research and continues to expand as new research builds on earlier research.

Scientific literature is divided into two basic categories - "primary" and "secondary". Publications that report the results of original scientific research constitute the "primary" literature and include journal papers, conference papers, monographic series, technical reports, theses, and dissertations. The "primary" literature is eventually compacted into "secondary" sources which synthesize and condense what is known on specific topics. These include reviews, monographs, textbooks, treatises, handbooks, and manuals.

Availability of scientific literature varies depending upon its publication format. Some formats are widely available, e.g., journal papers, while others have limited distribution and are difficult to identify and acquire. This "gray literature" commonly includes technical reports, theses, and dissertations.

Scientific Research/Publication Cycle

The following chart illustrates common steps involved in the scientific research process and the publication sequence of "primary" and "secondary" literature.

Wildlife Serials

Wildlife serials can be grouped into the following three categories:

  • Journals -  regularly  issued publications that contain papers reporting the results of scholarly research in the discipline
  • Magazines and Newsletters - contain popular reports on developments in the discipline
  • Monographic series -  irregularly  issued publications that, in most cases, contain the results of scholarly research

Copies of papers contained in serials that are not available in the  Library can be requested through the Library's  Interlibrary Loan Service .

Since most wildlife indexes and "Reference Cited" lists abbreviate serial titles the following sources can help you find the unabbreviated serial title:

  • Articles and Databases: Wildlife  databases - click "More Details" for available abbreviation lists
  • Journal Title Abbreviations  lists both general sources and more specific sources in the sciences

For a more expanded distinction between journals and magazines see  Journals - Scholarly or Popular?

Journals . The research paper published in a scientific journal represents the most important "primary" source of information for the wildlife scientist and manager. Papers published in journals generally go through a "peer review" process before acceptance and publication. Presently there are over 25,000 peer reviewed scientific journals that being published. Seventy-five percent of the wildlife research literature is published in this format.

Databases listed in  Articles and Databases: Wildlife  can be used to find individual research papers by author, subject, taxonomic category, habitat, time period, chemical substance, or geographic area. In addition many journal publisher websites now maintain a searchable database of articles that have been published in their journals.

The following list contains many of the print and online fulltext journals available through the HSU Library which publish research of interest to wildlife scientists and managers. Check the  Journal and Newspaper Finder  for specific holdings and call number and for other titles that are not on this list.

Magazines and Newsletters . Articles appearing in these publications tend to be popular in format and scope. They may contain news and perspectives of professional societies and environmental organizations, report on research published in scholarly journals, report on environmental problems and new political initiatives, or contain articles aimed at the layperson.

African Wildlife  Alaska Fish & Game  American Birds  Arctic Birds: Newsletter of International Breeding Conditions Survey   Arizona Wildlife Views  Audubon  Birdscapes: News from the International Habitat Conservation Partnerships  (US Fish & Wildlife Service) (print copy also available in Docs I 49:100/4)  Black Lechwe  Bokmakierie  British Birds  California Biodiversity News   Colorado Outdoors  Conservationist  Endangered Species Bulletin (US Fish & Wildlife Service) (see also  Issues and Articles Online )  Field and Stream  Fish & Wildlife News  (US Fish & Wildlife Service)  Game Bird Breeders and Conservationists Gazette  High Country News Illahee: Journal for the Northwest Environment  International Wildlife  Living Bird  Louisiana Conservationist  Missouri Conservationist  Montana Outdoors  Natural History  Naturalist  Nature Conservancy Magazine  Nebraskalands  New Mexico Wildlife  Outdoor News Bulletin  (print copy available in SK 351.08)  Oregon Wildlife  Outdoor California  Outdoor Life  Outdoor News Bulletin  Washington Wildlife  Wyoming Wildlife  Zoonooz

Monographic Series.  While the results of most wildlife research are published in journals, perhaps 10% of the research is published in individual issues of monographic series. Longer contributions resulting from scientific research are often published in this format. Monographic series typically have the following characteristics:

  • They are published by government agencies, major universities or professional organizations.
  • Individual issues are collectively published in a continuing series which has a distinctive name. Typical names include  Bulletin ,  Special Report ,  Special Paper ,  Technical Report , and  Technical Paper .
  • Individual issues in the series are consecutively numbered, e.g. Technical Paper No. 36.
  • Each issue has a distinctive author and title.
  • There is no regular publication schedule in contrast to a journal.
  • Individual issues contain the completed results of a single research project.
  • Individual issues range from several pages to several hundred pages.

A typical example is:

Wheeler, W.E., R.C. Gatti, & G.A. Bartlett.(a) 1984.  Duck Breeding, Ecology and Harvest Characteristics on Grand River Marsh Wildlife Area .(b) Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources(c) Technical Bulletin(d) No. 145(e). where a=individual author; b=individual title; c=series author; d=series title; e=series number

To locate monographic series in the HSU Library you need to consult the following sources:

  • For federal and California State agency series use the catalogs and indexes listed in  Natural Resources Agency Government Documents and Reports . They are are physically located in the Documents Collection.
  • For all other monographic series use the library catalog or the  Journal and Newspaper Finder . The key is to look for the series of which an individual issue is a part. You must look under either the series title ( Technical Bulletin  in the above example)  or  the sponsoring organization ( Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources  in the above example). In the above example there is  no  listing under the author "Wheeler..."" or the title "Duck Breeding..." since these are the author and title of the individual issue. The catalog entry will note each number held by the Library in a particular series, e.g., #1-25, 26-30, 35-

As with individual journal papers databases included in  Articles and Databases: Wildlife  also can be used to identify research published in this format.

The following monographic series of interest to wildlife are found in the regular bookstacks of the Library.

  • American Ornithologists' Union.  Ornithological Monographs
  • Special Report
  • Technical Report
  • Occasional Paper
  • Progress Notes

Theses and Dissertations

The outcome of graduate study conducted at universities is commonly a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation. In addition to the formal thesis or dissertation, research results are often communicated in other "primary" literature formats, such as the journal paper.

You can find and acquire 1) CPH masters theses; and 2) theses and dissertations produced at other universities that are available in other libraries and on the Internet. In addition the following are specialized directories and databases to theses and dissertations in wildlife:

  • Bibliography of Wildlife Theses  (SK 353 M66) Lists U.S. and Canadian theses and dissertations completed between 1900 and 1968.
  • Wildlife and Ecology Studies Worldwide  (HSU users only) Iindexes U.S. dissertations and theses in wildlife.

Conference Papers

Papers presented at national and international conferences, symposia, and workshops are another source of "primary" scientific information in wildlife. For many conferences the presented papers are eventually published in a "proceedings" or "transactions" volume. Papers with no published proceedings may be refined and reworked for formal publication in a journal. Proceedings available are listed in the library catalog under both author (generally the name of the conference, individual editor or sponsoring organization) and title.

Some databases included in  Articles and Databases: Wildlife  provide subject, taxonomic, geographic, and author access to individual conference papers.

Following are some of the regularly recurring wildlife conferences received by the Library. Check the library catalog for call numbers and specific holdings. In addition there are many other one-time specialty conferences listed in the catalog.

  • Conference on Wetlands Restoration and Creation.  Proceedings

Monographs (Books)

Monographs generally are not part of the "primary" literature of science, but rather are "secondary" sources of information. They may be either scholarly contributions or popularizations on specific topics. Through scholarly monographs the "primary" literature on specific topics is condensed, summarized or reviewed. Most include references back to the "primary" literature. They may take the format of textbooks, treatises, taxonomic works, or a multitude of reference works, such as encyclopedias or handbooks.

100 Zoology Dissertation Topic

List of 100 zoology msc, phd dissertation topic ideas.

Earthly life is studied in biology and zoology. In the context of this field, invertebrates and vertebrates are researched, along with their morphology, the physiologic underpinnings of their lifestyles, geographic distribution, origin, categorization, function in the biosphere and in human existence, and techniques for intravital observation.

Therefore, regardless of the level of accreditation of the educational institution, zoology dissertations are crucial for students of many disciplines. The student learns to emphasise the key details in the subject of zoology, explain these details succinctly, and thoroughly research a particular issue while writing, reading, and memorising this work. Teachers or students themselves may select the themes for their dissertations.

It takes a lot of time and effort to thoroughly research the topics in the field of zoology. Numerous subjects and issues can be researched in biology and zoology. For your consideration, we've chosen the subjects that are both theoretically and practically intriguing. In the section below, we'll explain how to pick the ideal theme.

How Should You Choose the Best Zoology Dissertation Topic?

Since the topic must satisfy several requirements, choosing a topic for a zoology dissertation is always one of the most difficult phases for a student. Relevance, information correctness, absence of abstractness, accessibility of freshness, and elaboration are a few examples. Check your dissertation topic for all of the aforementioned if you have chosen an intriguing subject.

We suggest that you rephrase the topic for the best outcomes. By doing this, you may focus on a smaller region of the problem, which will make future work easier and save time. Let's use an illustration. It is far simpler to produce a strong student paper that touches on intractable basic scientific questions than it is to compose a solid dissertation on the subject of zoology with a specific item or problem in the title. Make writing your dissertation as easy as possible for yourself.

Additionally, you may ask our support gurus for assistance if you are unable to select a theme on your own. A professional will advise you on a topic that will be beneficial, timely, and in demand for you during your university studies or assist you in selecting the ideal topic.

A List Of Unique Ideas For A Dissertation About Wildlife

When it comes to wildlife, you have to give your best because this is an area that gives you a freedom to write based on a wider perspective. There are multiple things you can write about and get good marks. This article gives you a way forward on the things you need to put in your mind as you craft your dissertation paper. Consider the following key things first:

Do some prior research

You cannot come up with adequate knowledge on the given topic if you do not have the resources to search it from. Therefore, you are supposed to visit the school library and read as many wildlife books as possible. Alternatively, you can use the search engine to find these books online. It is recommended that students should consider jotting down this information so that they are able to remember it.

Focus on the topic

Before you come at par with the ideas, you have to first know the topic in which you need to major on. Let all the ideas you put on focus on this subject so that everything you have is relevant. If you are unable to link them with the given topic, you can get to a friend or a teacher and get advice from any of them. Consider the following ideas:

  • What different animal species are in a zoo?
  • What are the different species of trees I can find in a game park?
  • Is it appropriate to use animal species for experiments such as when cloning?
  • Why should these animals be treated with respect and not be mishandled by anybody?
  • How has wildlife changed the economy of the world?
  • What are the various wildlife jobs that people can apply and still smile about their salaries?
  • Is it possible to become a game ranger? What are some of the necessary requisites one must have?
  • What are some of the factors that hinder the development of the wildlife section of the economy?
  • How can wildlife be improved so that there is mutual benefit between people and different animal species?
  • Should dangerous animal species be kept in a zoo? Why?
  • How can the government ensure people gain more interest in wildlife?
  • How do tourists contribute to the low performance of the wildlife section in developing countries
  • Should the government use animals and various tree species for scientific experiments or is this against their rights?

Research shows that brown treesnakes frequently kill prey too large to swallow

by Lindsey Byars, Virginia Tech

Research finds that Guam treesnakes are biting off more than they can chew

Brown treesnakes are not indigenous to Guam. The species arrived shortly after World War II, perhaps aboard shipping vessels. Since then, they have caused the local or total extinction of most native forest bird species.

Researchers including Haldre Rogers, a tropical forest community ecologist and conservation biologist in the College of Natural Resources and Environment have spent years conducting studies to support and inform bird conservation efforts.

Since 2007, Rogers has operated the Ecology of Bird Loss project in Guam to better understand how losing birds impacts the ecosystem and to form strategies to restore birds to the ecosystem. It has previously been suggested that while total eradication is optimal, removing the large, mature snakes—the ones big enough to eat birds—might be sufficient to allow some bird populations to recover.

Research, published on July 25 in Ecology and Evolution , shows that snakes are killing birds whether they can eat them or not, suggesting that they are routinely tackling prey that are too large for them to swallow.

"Around half of the birds that are getting killed by snakes are not actually eaten by them," said Martin Kastner, a doctoral student in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation. Kastner has spent the last three years with a team in the Mariana Islands conducting the first study into the influence of both prey and predator sizes on brown treesnake predation success.

"Before this work, no one realized the extent to which snakes are unsuccessfully trying to predate birds," said Rogers. "I think we just assumed that most of the time they would be good at estimating how large a prey they would need, so it came as a big surprise to us that almost exactly half of the birds were not actually consumed."

The team attached radio transmitters to roughly 400 SĂ„li fledglings, a medium-sized bird in the starling family that is locally endangered on Guam because of brown treesnake predation.

The fledglings that were unsuccessfully ingested by the brown treesnake were found dead on the ground with their heads and necks coated in saliva, whereas the fledglings that were successfully ingested were tracked to the bellies or feces of snakes.

The snake population at the site was also surveyed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Brown Treesnake Lab with measurements taken of all snakes found, allowing the team to compare the size of snakes that successfully ate birds to those on the landscape.

The study began in November 2019 and concluded in October of 2022:

  • The team recorded 294 fledgling bird deaths out of 461 tracked.
  • Brown treesnakes killed 58% of those, and cats killed 30%.
  • Approximately half of the birds killed by the brown tree snakes were covered in saliva but not ingested.

Kastner was the lead writer of a paper on these findings titled, "Gape-limited invasive predator frequently kills avian prey that are too large to swallow." Along with Kastner and Rodgers, co-authors on the paper also included Scott M. Goetz, Kayla M. Baker, Shane R. Siers, Eben H. Paxton, and Melia G. Nafus. This paper is one part of Kastner's doctoral thesis.

"This chapter of Martin's thesis is really interesting. It helps managers figure out how much control is needed, and which age classes should be targeted," said Rogers. "These results have management implications because they show that smaller snakes can still effectively kill birds even if they can't actually swallow them, which means that there is a broader demographic range of snakes that need to be controlled."

Kastner's dissertation focuses on trying to understand the impact of snakes on SĂ„li and to explore how snake control approaches correlate to fledgling survival and the overall population of the bird.

"In the right context, snakes are a big part of the ecosystem. They're wonderful in the right place, but in Guam, unfortunately, they're invasive, so that's important to keep in mind," said Kastner. "We need to get rid of them if we want hope of bringing back native birds and restoring the overall ecosystem."

Kastner has also helped establish Guam's first volunteer group dedicated to brown treesnake eradication, named "Friends of Islan DĂ„no."

Islan DĂ„no' is an islet located off Guam that has long been considered free from invasive brown treesnakes until recently.

An article by Kastner and the other co-founder, Olympia Terral, describing these efforts has been published in Berryman Institute's Human-Wildlife Interactions journal. Kastner and Rogers also have recently published a life history paper about SĂ„li with many co-authors from the region.

In addition to the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Tech, the researchers have also worked closely with the USGS Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center in Hawai'i National Park; the United States Department of Agriculture National Wildlife Research Center in Barrigada, Guam; and the Guam Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources.
