Do Video Games Cause Violence: Essay Sample

Do video games cause violence: essay introduction, violence in video games essay: problem analysis, positive effect of violent video games: essay body paragraph, effects of violent video games: essay conclusion, works cited.

Video games are electronic devices that require the interaction of a user. This enables the generation of visual feedback. Video games vary from handheld devices to mainframe computers.

Video games started as early as the mid-20th century, and today their popularity has grown tremendously. The entertainment industry that produces them has grown in leaps and bounds.

Video games have both positive and negative effects on the consumers. This paper will focus on how exposure to violent video games can have major negative effects on children’s behavior in terms of education, aggressiveness, and creativity.

In recent times, the debates about aggressiveness in children due to exposure to video games have been on the rise. There is much violence in video games, and it is estimated that “over 85% of the games contain some violence and approximately half of the video games include serious violent actions” (Carnagey, Anderson and Bushman 489).

Most video games are rated E, meaning they can be sold to children of all ages starting from six years old. However, a close examination of these games shows that the parents consider them violent. This is detrimental to the youths because exposure to violence in video games has worse effects than those caused by abusive parents, coming from a broken home, or associating with antisocial peers.

Children who play violent video games have increased aggressive cognitions, aggressive behavior, psychological arousal as well as antisocial behavior. Furthermore, exposure to violence in the games leads to desensitization- “a reduction in emotion-related physiological reactivity to real violence” (Carnagey et al 490).

This means that when children are exposed to violence, they become used to it and may grow up thinking violence is the norm. For example, when children are shown a violent clip for the first time, they react with a lot of anxiety, but a second clip with similar content does not have the same effect because they have become immune to violence. This is dangerous because it lowers the children’s responsiveness to real violence.

In video games, children are exposed to violence in a positive manner, with exciting music and sounds and beautiful visual effects, which are used as rewards for violent actions in the game. This leads to reduced physiological arousal, for example, the heart rate. Eventually, desensitization occurs, and such children are less likely to notice violent acts or events or sympathize with victims of violence.

They also have a less negative attitude towards violence and generally believe the world is unsafe, which leads to the need for violence to protect oneself. Such children are less likely to seek for help in cases of violence because they have a decreased perception of injury. In addition, such children have increased aggression and are more likely to unleash violence toward other children at school.

Some children spend a considerable amount of time playing video games which impacts their school performance negatively. This is because they devote a lot of time to playing video games at the expense of schoolwork. This is especially true for children who have already had a problem with schoolwork

. They prefer to play video games instead of doing homework, especially if they keep failing. To enjoy a bit of success, they turn to video games where they can achieve victory. For example, for killing the villain in the game, they get rewarded with points, music, or sounds.

The negative effect on education is more evident among children who begin playing video games at a very young age.

These children become addicted to video games and thus ignore schoolwork. Video games also impact children’s education. Most of the time, they will be talking about their video game heroes instead of discussing useful things that might help them to improve their academics.

Some children can remember all the aspects of video games but can find it difficult to remember simple mathematical or science concepts taught in class. Some children will play video games for long periods and may fail to get enough sleep. This may lead to a lack of concentration in class the following day. Thus, they fail to grasp the content taught by teachers and jeopardize their educational growth.

The evidence is in lower grades in school exams and tests.

Still, some scholars argue that video games are good for children as they help to improve their cognitive and motor skills. This is because the “skills learned during game playing may be applied in instructional setting” (Vorderer and Bryant 336).

Video games have killed creativity in children. This is because children spend most of their time sitting in front of computers playing games. They engage in shooting, killing, and kidnapping instead of doing creative things that might help improve their cognitive skills.

They do not have an opportunity to engage with the environment or even play with their peers (Lakhanpal 1). This kind of environment allows the children to develop social skills, become inquisitive by asking questions regarding their surroundings, and learn about daily activities. On the contrary, “being glued to the video games all the time hinders this”(Lankhanpal 1).

At the same time, video games provide children with virtual worlds where they can practice skills such as leadership. These are the same skills necessary in real life. The children get a chance to learn the skills through taking roles. For instance, a child may take the part of a police officer in the game and learn a thing or two about being a police officer. This is because the games “mimic social structure” (Kiefabar 1).

Finally, it is the responsibility of parents to control how their children play video games. Too much exposure to the games has more negative effects than positive ones. Parents should therefore protect their children from the adverse effects of the games. Just as they would not allow their children to watch X-rated movies, they should also stop them from playing violent video games.

Many refuse to believe that playing violent games in front of a 19 inch TV can make them or their children or themselves violent. Video games are the source of adrenalin that makes them so desirable. They provide all the fictional pleasures unattainable in the real world.

In the meantime, parents need to understand the symptoms of video game addiction and notice any changes in them, if any. It is crucial to remove them from these games if worse comes to worst.

The players themselves need to acknowledge the changes they see in themselves. Most of them remain in denial about the harmful effects it may have on them. They can be guided into the real world again with some counseling. Using violence to prohibit them from playing these games will make them hate their caregivers. Parents need to be careful about what content their children are exposed to online.

Many games have age restrictions. Parents should be cautious about their children maintaining the age limit. Such measures are not easy to implement if they are not habituated with the internet world, but it is a necessary step. Violence Video Games

How it works

The first video games emerged in the late 1970s with poor graphics and a low amount of depicted violence. Since then, video games have become much more violent with far more sophisticated graphics making the games seem almost lifelike. This has prompted concerns from the media and psychologists concerns that frequently resurface in the wake of school shootings. For example, following a 2006 school shooting in Montreal, the Associated Press reported that the shooter had been “fascinated by the video game “Super Columbine Massacre (“Columbine game ‘fascinated killer,’ 2006).

A question about whether violent games inspire violent behavior “in real life” is a subject that strongly divides opinion. Did violent video game play lead this young man to go to school with a gun? Is there a causal relationship between video game violence and real- life violence and aggression?

The fear that popular entertainments might have a negative effect on society is a longstanding one. Concern that children’s entertainments, especially, might exert a “dark influence are, according to sociologist Joel Best, nothing new (1998, p. 197). A century ago, people worried about violent imagery in the cheap adventure novels sold to boys (Best, 1998). In more recent times the focus shifted to movies and television, and it now hovers around violent video games.

Are societal concerns about video games just another passing anxiety that will seem somewhat silly 50 to 100 years from now, or can these games cause actual violence and aggression in those who play them? According to Craig Anderson (2003), a widely- cited scholar in the field of aggression research, violent video games, like any other violent media, are strongly related to an increase in aggressive behavior and thoughts, as well as a decrease in “prosocial behavior. (“Prosocial behavior is associated with an inclination to help others). Anderson has presented evidence for this connection in his own research, and his findings have been affirmed by other researchers.

Among these other researchers who have argued that there is a connection between violent video game play and aggressive behavior are Australian psychiatric researchers Guy Porter and Vladan Starcevic (2007). Their meta-analysis of research on video games and violence includes a study that found that adolescents who play violent video games also exhibit more hostility and aggressive behavior through fights, arguments, and poor school performance. They also reviewed laboratory studies involving individuals playing violent video games in a laboratory setting that demonstrate a connection between the video game play and aggressive feelings and behaviors. A more recent laboratory study (Barlett and Rodeheffer , 2009) showed that repeated play of violent video games increases aggressive thoughts and feelings in players. The researchers compared subjects playing nonviolent games with those playing violent games, and they found greater aggression in the latter group following play.

Critics of the idea that violent video game play leads to violence and aggression have focused much of their criticism on the methods employed by aggression researchers. Research psychologist Christopher Ferguson has been a particularly outspoken critic of studies that link video games and aggression. For example, he criticizes Anderson’s use of a “noise blast program (which produces an irritating noise to punish player error) for its inconsistent frequencies and pitches, which could be changed during violent and non- violent interaction during game play and thus could be used to skew the results (Ferguson, 2007). In one of his own studies (as cited in Ferguson, 2007), Ferguson re-administered Anderson’s study using a new more reliable and standardized version of the “noise blast program. This program had a standard noise that did not change in frequency and pitch, and did not change during violent and non-violent interaction during game play. The new program showed that exposure to violent video games had no relationship with aggression in the players.

Ferguson also looked at five meta-analyses of the effects of violent video games and aggression in the players. He found that the results of the studies were mixed. In two of the studies, the link between violent video games and aggression were positive but weak; the other three studies showed no connection. The studies used a wide variety of measures related to aggression–“behavioral, cognitive, affective, physiological, and prosocial measures (Ferguson 2007, p. 311) which, Ferguson suggests, limits opportunities for synthesis, as too many different things are being measured. In his own research, he did not find a causal connection aggressive thoughts and aggressive behavior. Epidemiologists have further challenged the idea that violent games cause violent behavior by arguing that, if violent video games did cause aggression and violence in the players, then the growing popularity of violent video games would be occurring alongside a growth in violent crimes (Bensley and Eenwyk, 2001). But according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, violent crimes have decreased rather than increased over the past decade (U.S. DOJ, 2009).

In summary, while there appear to be many studies that, in a variety of different ways, link violent video games to violent and aggressive behavior, there is no real proof that this is a cause-and-effect relationship, and there is much evidence to suggest that it isn’t. Throughout history, violence has been depicted in many forms. Today’s depictions of violence in movies and video games are tame compared to the actual violence perpetrated during public gladiatorial games held in ancient Rome, or to the public executions, witch hunts, and trials of the middle ages. The two perpetrators of the Columbine massacre may have played violent video games but is more likely that their behavior was linked to their own personality issues and not the games they played.

Introduction

Negative effects of video games, video games as a neutral factor, future studies.

Most of the popular video games in the market are characterized by their ability to allow players to role-play in various situations, unfortunately, most of these situations normally involve violence. There has been unease at the effect that this exposure could have on children, considering that video games are fast becoming a favorite past time for most children in the developed world. Studies have suggested the existence of a relationship between youth violence and video games and this could apply to children too.

The evidence that video games increase violence among children is overwhelming. For example, a study in 2001 found that a high number of violence cases in high schools and universities were orchestrated by persons who confessed to playing violent games regularly. An explanation for this is that aggression is mainly based on the learning function of the brain and as such, each violent episode is in essence one more learning opportunity, hence violence is increased with increased exposure to video games.

One of the factors that make video games prone to leading to violence is the high level of engagement and concentration required of gamers. Studies show that children who were exposed to violent video games engage in fantasy plays in which they emulate the actions of the violent characters. This effectively demonstrates that the high involvement of video games results in youths desiring to play out the violent actions in real life.

A logical consequence of exposure to violence is desensitization, a process whereby the cognitive, emotional, and even behavioral response to violence is eliminated in a gradual process. Therefore, engaging in violent video games results in an increase for tolerance of violent behavior in real life.

While advocates for video games argue that video games represent violence as ‘cool and fashionable’, it should be noted that video games are no the only media through which such notions arise from. Violence is an aspect of the mainstream media and hence violence in children should take into consideration these various media platforms.

Opponents of media violence point to the rise in crime wave during the 1970s and 1980s, which was largely attributed to violence in television. They say that the same could happen due to video game violence. This is a fallacy as statistics indicate that violent crimes in the US fell in the 1990s, a time when violent video games became popular.

While video games are meant to be educational or entertaining, content analysis shows that 89% of these contain some violent content. Since video games are so common among children, the effect of video games would be significant. It has been said that a relation exists between video game violence and real life violence, however, this is no absolute reality.

Proponents argue that violent children prefer to play violent video games. Research suggests otherwise, therefore we can conclude that while violent games are played by violent children, the aggression levels increase due to the exposure.

This paper examined the effects of violent video games on children and their inclination to violent behavior. From the study, it is evident that video games have an effect on the behavior of children.

Future studies should look at other forms of violence, not necessarily physical as children are likely to engage on these on a regular basis.
