Kolai Movie Review: Style takes precedence in this wishy-washy whodunit

Kolai Movie Review: Style takes precedence in this wishy-washy whodunit

When we first meet Kolai 's Vinayak Veeradiyar (Vijay Antony), he is wearing a fedora, a long suit, and is walking past his accomplishments showcased in the form of newspaper cuttings. He is almost like a Sherlock Holmes meets JJ aka Jake Gittes from Chinatown . We are told he has the acumen of Holmes and we realise he also has the disposition of a tragic Gittes. Vinayak’s slow gait, his measured dialogue delivery, his restrained body language, and his deductions with a pinch of theatrics are almost perfect for the unravelling of a whodunit. Even the setting of the film, which is an alternate reality… almost like an Upside-down version of Chennai called Madras is interesting. Having the murdered girl narrate her story through voiceovers has an element of intrigue. Even the cliches, including multiple suspects, each with a clear motive, being questioned one after the other, are on point. However, the biggest crime of the film is that none of these elements come together to deliver a coherent and engaging murder mystery.

Director: Balaji K Kumar

Cast: Vijay Antony, Meenakshi Choudhary, Radikaa Sarathkumar, Ritika Singh

Kolai begins with the ‘kolai’ of a singer-model, who is found dead inside her house. An unnecessarily creepy top cop Mansoor Ali Khan (John Vijay) assigns this high-profile case to rookie cop Sandhya (Ritika Singh). It is her first case. Why is she assigned the case in the first place if she is a rookie and this is apparently super high profile? When the murder mystery gets murkier, they ask her to enlist the help of senior cop Vinayak, who is on a self-imposed sabbatical. It is a classic case of a brooding senior helping out the over-enthusiastic junior cop. We saw it recently in Por Thozhil too, and Kolai is perfectly set up for following similar beats. But director Balaji K Kumar has a different set of plans, and we follow the filmmaker’s ambition to treat Kolai as a slow-burn neo-noir film. The intentions cannot be blamed, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Even when the case unravels, and we are fed details like how the house was locked from the inside, there are no signs of forced entry, where and how did the killer/killers escape, what is the motive, etc… we are more distracted by the narrative style rather than being egged on to the edge of our seats. While Girishh Gopalakrishnan’s background score does take us to the point, the happenings on screen slump us right back. The flamboyant editing perfectly suits the idea of the film, but is let down by the writing that fails to stay on the right side of the line between indulgence and intemperance. None of the suspects really get to do anything, and we are left to be content with the sleuthing skills of Vinayak, and honestly, after a point, even this doesn’t cut it. Yes, the writing allows us to be interested in his detecting abilities, but soon enough, the film does resort to coincidences, Freudian slips, and plain luck. But it is interesting to see a cop who prefers brain to brawn. There is not a single scene where he has to do anything but deduce, and it is a welcome detour from our regular cop/detective films.

The whole Holmes-Watson vibe between Vinayak and Sandhya too doesn’t work at all, and she is just used as an exposition dump or to listen to her senior cop unabashedly spew sexist remarks without registering even a semblance of her discomfort. Things are no better for Vinayak either, whose tragic backstory evokes no sympathy. And the murder suspects have it worse. Barring a briefly interesting role for Radikaa Sarathkumar, and Murli Sharma getting to creep out people like there is no tomorrow, there is very little for the supporting cast to ride on. And I'll tiptoe around the last act and the final reveal not just to avoid giving spoilers but also because it was a disappointment.

There are flashes of something interesting in the narrative, and certain choices too have potential. Be it the idea of an alternate city or the way Vinayak's thought trains are depicted on screen, these ideas are detours from a film that seems to be falling flat with every passing scene. While these detours might not be much, it manages to briefly inject a sense of adrenaline into the proceedings before it all crumbles once again. There is an Interstellar hat-tip that is executed poorly. There is a hallucination angle to the narrative that is superficial at best. A lot of ideas are present but are not fleshed out long enough for us to throw our weight behind the intentions. As the curtains are drawn on Kolai , one can't help but wonder about the various what-ifs, would-haves and could-haves. Did we just miss out on our own Knives Out and Benoit Blanc moment? But then, I tell myself, "Forget it... This is Madras Town."

Kolai Tamil Movie Review: Vijay Antony Starrer is a Gripping Thriller

Kolai Tamil Movie Review

Kolai, written and directed by Balaji Kumar, is a gripping Tamil action spy thriller that keeps audiences at the edge of their seats throughout its runtime. Starring the talented duo of Vijay Antony and Ritika Singh in the lead roles, the movie delves into a web of secrets, espionage, and unexpected twists.

The plot of Kolai unfolds with the murder of a famous model, sending shockwaves through the city. In the midst of the chaos, a smart and tenacious detective enters the scene to investigate the crime. As the detective digs deeper, he soon realizes that the model’s murder is just the tip of the iceberg, leading him into a labyrinthine mystery that will challenge his wit and determination.

Vijay Antony’s portrayal of the intelligent detective is commendable. He effortlessly brings depth to his character, capturing both the vulnerability and strength of the investigator. Ritika Singh, on the other hand, delivers a power-packed performance, shining in her role as the enigmatic female lead, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the narrative.

He skillfully weaves together action sequences, intense drama, and thrilling suspense, offering a roller-coaster ride that captivates the audience from start to finish. The cinematography elevates the movie’s visual appeal, capturing the essence of each scene with precision.

One of the film’s strongest aspects is its screenplay, which expertly balances action and mystery. The well-crafted script provides ample space for character development, allowing the audience to connect with the key players emotionally. Additionally, the plot twists and turns keep viewers engaged, leaving them guessing until the final moments.

Kolai Tamil Movie Review: Vijay Antony Starrer is a Gripping Thriller

The movie’s soundtrack also plays a vital role in heightening the overall experience. The background score complements the narrative, amplifying tension and elevating the movie’s intense moments.

Despite its many strengths, Kolai may not be for everyone. The film delves into darker themes and showcases some intense action sequences, which might not be suitable for sensitive viewers. However, for fans of action-packed thrillers and mysterious plots, this film promises an enthralling cinematic experience.

To sum up, Kolai is an enthralling Tamil action spy thriller that successfully blends elements of mystery into its narrative. Vijay Antony and Ritika Singh deliver stellar performances, while Balaji Kumar’s direction keeps the audience hooked until the very end.

With its engaging screenplay and impressive technical aspects, Kolai stands as a noteworthy addition to the Tamil cinema’s thriller genre. If you’re a fan of the genre and appreciate a good mystery, this movie should definitely be on your watch list.

Kolai Movie Review: Balaji Kumar's 'Kolai' is great to look at, but the murder mystery beneath is barely exciting

  • 21 Jul 2023

Kolai Movie Review

Kolai Movie Cast & Crew

Balaji Kumar made an impressive debut with  Vidiyum Munn , in 2013. Ten years later, he is back with a film that at least looks impressive.  Kolai  – based on a true-life murder case – feels like a music video fused with a  Vogue  fashion shoot fused with the sensibilities of a noir-comic like  Sin City . The look fits because the murder victim is a fashion model – and as she says, she is all about surfaces. The old song  'Paartha nyabagam illayo ' is sung, and also used frequently in the jazz-inflected background score. And these songs come with surreal visuals: clouds that look like faces, and two lovers standing between trains roaring past them. Even the song that opens the film has a certain sensibility. It's the aria 'Nessun dorma'. It's almost a signal that the visuals are going to be equally operatic.

But the story/narrative struggles to live up to the visuals. It's the old formula of a retired detective (Vijay Antony, in a weird wig, as Vinayak) lured back into a case by a bright protégée (Ritika Singh). There's suicide, blackmail, a senior cop who wants to close the case ASAP, a boy with special needs, and a personal angle for Vinayak that involves an ailing daughter. All of this promises a heady mix of drama and excitement – even if the early scenes hint that mood is going to be prioritised over nail-biting tension. But by the interval point, I realised I was barely invested in the goings-on, and with scene after scene of people being interrogated, I was not holding my breath about who the killer is.

Part of the reason is the deliberate pacing, the stiff acting, and the distracting over-emphasis on a certain kind of staging. For instance, when a man who is being interrogated lights a cigarette, he gets freeze-framed while the detectives continue their conversation. This sort of thing feels gimmicky and disconnects us from the plot and the characters. The emotional angles, too, don't work – whether it's about lovers or parents. But more importantly, there is no sense of continuity, where one scene builds to the next, and that scene builds to the one after that. But then, even without these issues, the basic plot doesn't seem to have much meat. The reveal at the end is a bummer. This is supposed to be one of the most famous murder cases. Maybe reading about it will tell us what drew this filmmaker to make this film.

Kolai Movie Review: This Whodunit Is High On Aesthetics, Low On Rush

Kolai Movie Review

Imaginations run wild in Balaji K Kumar’s new murder mystery , which explains its fantastic visual choice even before the film begins. A prologue lets us know that it draws its inspiration from literature.  Kolai  takes place in a metropolis we’re very familiar with, but it chooses to refer to it as Madras. The film is centred around modern-day Tamil-speaking characters, but they live in sprawling art-deco apartments with embellished interiors. A locked-room murder (the sort of impossible murders that crime literature revels in) unfolds in one such apartment, and the detective in charge is Vinayak ( Vijay Antony ). And as with the film’s ethos, nothing about this platinum-haired “Sherlock” , whose personal tragedy bears a resemblance with his case, is ordinary.  Kolai ’s eye for visual finesse is visible all through its MO ( i.e. production design, adept cuts and so on), but its motive, and by extension its writing, is watered down.

Vijay Antony in Kolai

Balaji’s admiration for Hollywood film noir is palpable in the visual grammar of  Kolai,  which   is based on a real-life unsolved murder case from 1923. So, when a young model and singer Leila (Meenakshi Chaudhari) has been found strangled in her apartment, with all evidence pointing to an impossible murder, we don’t get the usual gritty procedural treatment. The director is more interested in the “why” and “how” of things, rather than the “who”.  Kolai  plays out like a soft and slow musical that’s more concerned with the build-up to a crescendo than the crescendo itself. And Balaji makes this possible by making his visuals as literal and visceral as possible. Every little thought and vision that surrounds its characters is given imagery. For instance, when we see Leila survive a sticky situation and get out of a room, in the next shot she runs into a graveyard as she wonders if her story would’ve ended in the cemetery had she not entered the room in reality. When she’s performing a song about unrequited love on stage, we see that play out as two lovers share a passionate dance in her imagination.

A few of these choices — as stunning as they look — come off as heavy-handed, but a few others work when we’re struck by an idea. Like when Vinayak is describing his love for his daughter, the pivotal scene is brought alive with the two of them on a cliff, grasping each other’s hands. But who here is saving whom? Vinayak is one of the most interesting parts about the film. He’s a detective who is torn by a tragedy at home that he unkindly holds himself responsible for. When he realises that he can right his wrong with yet another person’s life, he finds hope. One tragedy brings him pain, while the other, purpose. But Balaji doesn’t show the same restraint in handling the case at hand.

A still from Kolai

Even if Vinayak does most of the solving, his job is to assist Sandhya, his protege and a smart new recruit who seeks his help, overwhelmed by the case. Vinayak is introduced to us as this complicated and relentless genius figure who has solved more than 200 cases in his career, so we know that an obvious transfer of power is underway. But  Kolai  takes the super obvious route by surrounding him with dolts. So, even if we’re told Sandhya ( Ritika Singh ) is a brilliant cop, what we are shown, however, are glimpses of her cluelessness — she is so cruelly oblivious that she doesn’t so much as ask to dust for fingerprints at a crime scene without Vinayak’s interference. And then there is your standard repugnant chief of police (John Vijay) who passes sexist comments about Leila, only for Vinayak to barge into the room and take him down with a “ un ponnuku nadandha ipdi pesuviya? (Will you say the same if it happens to your daughter?)” sort of dialogue, diluting the entire point. Do women deserve decency from men only if they’re looked at as their daughters or sisters?

Even if the film is littered with smarts (Sandhya brings up the Nova theory to explain the coincidences in life, while an influential model agent quotes Rudyard Kipling’s Law of The Jungle to warn Leila of her life to come), the film doesn’t manage to leverage this into anything. So, when we do get to the “who” of it all, as mind-bending as the arc is, a small sigh is collectively let out.

Kolai review: Artificiality and slow pace dampens this investigative thriller

Vijay Antony is his usual measured self, but his performance is not enough to make up for the loss of interest caused by a weak plot.

Has sparks of occasional brilliance!

Kolai (Tamil)

  • Cast: Vijay Antony, Ritika Singh, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Radikaa Sarathkumar, Murli Sharma, Siddhartha Shankar, Kishore Kumar, John Vijay, and Arjun Chidambaram
  • Director: Balaji K Kumar
  • Producer: Infiniti Film Ventures, and Lotus Pictures
  • Music: Girishh Gopalakrishnan
  • Runtime: 2 hours 6 minutes
  • Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Emraan Hashmi, and Revathy
  • Director: Maneesh Sharma
  • Producer: Aditya Chopra
  • Music: Pritam Chakraborty
  • Runtime: 2 hours 35 minutes

Director Balaji K Kumar, who earlier impressed us with Vidiyum Munn (2013), attempts to present his latest Kolai in an innovative manner.

Sadly though, his attempt to narrate the investigative drama in a fashion that is distinctly different from the usual method that most film directors employ doesn’t work.

As a result, we audiences are left with a movie the story of which is hard to relate.

A gifted singer, Leila (Meenakshi Chaudhary) hopes to make it big in the world of music when she wins a popular singing contest at the national level.

A still from Kolai

A still from ‘Kolai’. (Supplied)

Like several people who are unsure of what their next course of action must be, after making the initial splash to stardom, Leila too is unsure how to further her career in the singing industry after winning the contest.

That is when she is approached by Aditya (Murali Sharma), an agent for models, who promises her the world if she agrees to also become a model. He says both modelling and singing can complement each other.

She agrees; but then, things turn sour and she opts out. Soon after, she is found dead in her apartment.

It is clear that she has been murdered. Apart from Aditya, there are a host of other suspects, including her friend Satish (Siddhartha Shankar), photographer Arjun, and a special child called Vinod, who happens to be her neighbour.

The case is assigned to Sandhya (Ritika Singh) who takes the assistance of her mentor Vinayak (Vijay Antony) to solve the case.

How they go about solving the murder is what Kolai is all about.

A slow start.

Kolai begins on a slow and drab note. The film, especially its first half, fails to make an impression because of a number of factors.

The first factor that makes a big difference is the highly sophisticated manner in which all developments in the film are showcased.

The director, in his endeavour to make the movie internationally appealing, seems to have alienated it from local audiences.

As a result, those who have been a part of this wonderful city find it hard to buy the theory that this is a story happening in Chennai, despite the makers claiming it to be so.

True, Chennai does have a modern side to it. But the modern side showcased in the film makes Chennai look more like Chicago.

Exaggeration and artificiality.

The second factor that works against Kolai is its artificiality. There is a sense of exaggeration and artificiality in several sequences, especially those involving the police force.

Those from the police force come across more like employees in a private security service than they do as police officers.

Thirdly, the joy of watching an investigative thriller comes from watching an investigator searching for clues at the crime scene, collating them, deducing the sequence of events leading to the crime and eventually getting to understand the motive for the crime.

#Kolai from tomorrow in Theatres. A Sneak Peek for you. However, in Kolai , the first part of the investigation, — which is a careful examination of the crime scene — is almost absent with only interrogation of acquaintances of the victim and suspects happening.

There are flashes of occasional brilliance in the film like the spotting of a Freudian slip that a character makes while making a request to the cops but these are few and far between.

Supporting cast shine.

Vijay Antony in Kolai

The performances of Kolai’s lead actors aren’t also forceful enough for us to buy the story that the director is looking to sell.

Vijay Antony is his usual measured self, but his performance is not enough to make up for the loss of interest caused by a weak plot and an insipid narration.

Ritika Singh is completely at sea as the police officer investigating the case. She has a frown on her face on most occasions in the hope that it will give audiences the impression that she is a focused and sharp officer. Sadly, that is not the case.

Interestingly, two of the film’s strongest performances come from not its lead actors but from its supporting cast.

Murali Sharma, who plays a shady model agent looking to exploit vulnerable models, is absolutely fabulous, delivering a peach of a performance.

Equally good is Kishore Kumar who plays the character of Bobby. Both these actors contribute handsomely to the plot.

On the technical front, Girishh Gopalakrishnan’s background score is just perfect and plays a significant role in accentuating the mood of the sequences as they begin to unfold.

Director Balaji K Kumar’s Kolai has sparks of brilliance to offer occasionally.

However, for an audience who is hungry and looking for a sumptuous feast, this might come across as only a tasty snack at best!

‘Kolai’ movie review: An unflattering murder-mystery that prioritises style over substance

Despite all the quirky cinematic techniques on show, balaji kumar’s film, starring vijay antony and ritika singh, only comes across as a staple whodunit with no attempt to subvert anything.

July 21, 2023 03:52 pm | Updated 04:06 pm IST

With Kolai being a locked-room murder mystery based on a real-life unsolved murder (the 1923 murder of Dot King), and the presence of a star who is often credited for getting the sensibilities of the masses right , the promise was an intriguing film worth investing your time in. It’s a simple story that is told through the structure of a classic whodunit; after a singer-model Leila (Meenakshii Chaudhury) is found mysteriously murdered inside her house, two detectives (Vijay Antony and Ritika) follow the breadcrumbs to map out all possible suspects. Leila’s singer-boyfriend Sathish (Siddhartha Shankar) is the first one, but he has a strong alibi. Babloo (Kishore Kumar, the comedic relief in the film), Leila’s nagging ex-manager; Arjun (Arjun Chidambaram), a top fashion photographer accused of physical assault; and a perverted modelling head (Murli Sharma) are the other main suspects with questionable alibis and convincing motives.

Kolai (Tamil)

Firstly, director Balaji K Kumar doesn’t hide from how quickly he wants to get into the story. Even before you get accustomed to his distinct storytelling style, the expository dialogues kill half the excitement. In the very first shot of police constable Sandhya Mohanraj (Ritika), we are told that she is a top student of a detective named Vinayak. Vinayak (Vijay) is introduced as the clever and shrewd Sherlock who hesitates to get back into the field, and when we meet his wife, she immediately lets us know the status of their relationship and about their child who is critical in the hospital after a road accident. When the detectives meet the inspector of the police station Mansoor Ali Khan (John Vijay), he’s the typical perverted and immoral sloth from the word go.

Several timelines are bridged using dialogues as transitions, and though this seems like a cool trick, it’s unfortunate that it is only the technique that makes any impression; the dialogues keep us at an arm’s length from the events on screen, just like the narrative style and the world its set in.

The visual transitions and use of surreal metaphors also follow a similar pattern. It’s promising to see the thought that has gone behind each of these meticulously-sketched and programmed images, but you can’t help but wonder why they only underline what has already been told. The mise en scène captures our attention more, primarily because Balaji evidently strives hard to take us into a world that never quite manages to pull us in completely. The film is set in a fictional place, called... Madras, which is imbued with the spirit of Chennai.; it also partly seems like a manifestation of a futuristic Chennai that Balaji foresees.

But nothing really sticks to the mind, making both the world and the people it inhabits seem plasticky and soulless. That even the performances and dialogue delivery don’t help in selling the sentiments of the characters is disappointing. Though it’s commendable that Vijay Antony is exploring such genres and settings, the film offers the actor in him nothing interesting, eventually turning out to be a staple whodunit with no attempt to subvert anything.

All that said, Balaji Kumar is definitely an interesting filmmaker to watch out for. Not every day do you get to see Tamil films with such transitions and techniques; from a reverse shot reconstructing a place and taking it back in time, to one character in the frame being frozen in time to allow the others to interact.

What emerges as a clear winner is the music though. Girishh Gopalakrishnan steals the show, and the main theme (a remixed ‘Partha Nyabagam Illaiyo’ from the 1964 Puthiya Paravai ) haunts you for hours after the movie.

Kolai is currently running in theatres

Kolai review: A plastic murder mystery

Director balaji k kumar's kolai is all about style, but has little substance. heavily influenced by american murder mysteries, kolai is distant in terms of both aesthetics and emotions..

kolai tamil movie review in tamil

The biggest problem Indian cinema appears to be tackling right now is its dependence on and deference to American films. Right from the formative years, filmmakers have aped the stories, visuals, and even the aesthetics of Hollywood. One of the biggest laurels for a film in the mainstream remains, ‘it looks like a Hollywood film.’ The recent victim of such wannabe aspirations is director Balaji K Kumar’s Kolai. A note before the film tells us that it’s set in Madras, and not Chennai because things in the film are a little different from our reality. Mind you, it is not a period film. There’s no greater meaning for this set-up except that the director wants to make a film that looks like an American murder mystery. Unfortunately, Kolai ends up being a plastic film that is shallow and uninteresting.

Leila (Meenakshi Chaudhry), a model and singer, is found murdered in her apartment. The Inspector General wants the case solved as soon as possible as his retirement day is on the horizon. He urges Sandhya (Ritika Singh), the investigating officer, to seek the help of Vinayak ( Vijay Antony ), a renowned private detective. Like always, the PI is uninterested in the case as he is tackling his failing marriage and a bedridden daughter. And like always, he ends up taking the case. On the night of the murder, several men visited Leila’s apartment and everybody becomes a suspect. There are red herring, flashbacks, mourning boyfriend… the usual drill. Balaji has taken a straightforward murder mystery and tried to deliver a retro noir film when there’s nothing much to substantiate the style.

kolai tamil movie review in tamil

A lot of effort has gone into the gaudy set design of the film. Every frame looks rich but lifeless. The places in the film don’t look like it is inhabited by humans. The house, police station, and even streets look like life-size models displayed at Home Center. It is one thing to create exaggerated aesthetics for a film to back the nature of the story, but Balaji’s style doesn’t have any innate meaning to it. The far bigger problem is that this world is inconsistent. In one instance, we are in this weird setting, and in the next, it is our good old Chennai.

Kolai also suffers from an exposition problem. The moment we are introduced to a character, Balaji tells us everything we need to know about them. And nothing is interesting about the characters in Kolai because they are all stereotypes. There’s a suspect who is more about flaunting his biceps, a mentally-challenged neighbour who is a tech-savvy hacker, an addict who is a photographer, and so on. Even Vinayak and his problems don’t move us a bit as everything about the film is extremely remote to the viewer. A great twist might have made the film a bit more tolerable, but it fails on that account as well. Also, by the end of it, one doesn’t actually care about who killed whom. The only good outcome of the movie is the songs of composer Girish Gopala Krishnan. Yaar Nee and the new version of Tamil classic Paatha Nyabagam Illayo are the only things that remain with you.

Kolai Review

Kolai Movie Review

Kolai is an investigative whodunit thriller starring Vijay Antony and Ritika Singh in the lead roles. The movie is directed by Balaji.K Kumar of Vidiyum Munn fame.

Premise : Vijay Antony is a private detective who has been brought into a murder investigation to help the police department. How he solves the case alongside the police officer played by Ritika Singh forms the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction:   Follows the familiar murder mystery template, an unique treatment is tried in presenting the film. The screenplay is in the non-linear pattern, not just it, there is a constant effort for the paper to screen transition in a peculiar manner. But does it work, unfortunately not, goes overboard and misses the nativity feel. We don't realize that the film is happening in Chennai at any point, with zero concentration on the landscape of where the story is taking place. Appreciable efforts on the research about human psychology and investigation techniques, but all these details will hit only if the flow is interesting. The protagonist is introduced as the smartass detective with a Sherlock Holmes attire, but he does nothing smart, quite literally in the entire movie for that matter. The proceedings are extremely sluggish, with lack of grip and layering in the crime scene, the flow fails to keep us hooked despite the non-linear narrative. The first half setup is dull and the interrogation plot-points are not intense enough. The second half is slightly better, with a decent presumptuous angle to the crime, but that lasts only till the killer is revealed. The reason behind the murder is lame, maybe it is more appropriate to say that his justification is not conveyed in a believable manner. Trying to connect Vijay Antony’s personal life with the crime is a big bummer, purposefully connected with a poor knot.

Performances:   Subtle presence by Vijay Antony as always, he can never spoil a film with this toned down act. But the salt and pepper look is needless, felt it was kept simply because his character name is Vinayak. Ritika Singh as a cop has played her role decently, nothing more and nothing less. The supporting artists have their share of importance, but none of their performances are fulfilling nor their characterizations are convincing.

Technicalities : No songs and it is such a big relief for a genre specific film. Background score is different, not in the regular thriller template, but the intent is international, works out to an extent. The visual approach scale is big too, there are many creative shots, but the green-mat sequences with poor CGI waters down the experience. Crisp runtime, applause to the editor for keeping it under 2 hours.

The intent to treat it unique within the thriller genre is appreciable, but the thin script with lack of depth in writing the investigation portions and backstory behind the crime make it a weak outing.

Kolai First Review: Here Is What Producer Dhananjeyan's Wife Says After Watching Vijay Antony's Thriller

Kolai

Kolai First Review: Producer Dhananjeyan posted a tweet about Vijay Antony's investigation thriller film Kolai. He said that his wife Lalitha watched the film and said "An engaging & intelligent crime thriller with awesome BGM & stylish making."

The trailer of Vijay Antony starrer 'Kolai' has been released and has attracted the attention of fans. Vijay Antony, Ritika Singh, Meenakshi Chowdhury and many others acted in the film 'Kolai'. Produced by Infinity Film Ventures, Lotus Pictures, this film is directed by Balaji Kumar. Sivakumar Vijayan has done the cinematography.

Two Trailers For Kolai

Starring Radhika Sarathkumar, Murali Sharma, Siddhartha Shankar, Kishore Kumar, John Vijay, Arjun Chidambaram and Samkit Bohra in pivotal roles. The trailer of the film was released in August last year. Now that the release date of the film is nearing, the film team has released a new trailer.

The very first shot of the trailer impresses with its stunning cinematography. The trailer moves from the point of view of a model as the dialogue goes 'No matter how much we win in life, we will die in death'. Vijay Antony is introduced as the detective. The CG and making of the film gets attention.

Vijay Antony has acted in Salt and Pepper Look. Cinematography and music reflects the quality of the film. The trailer has increased the interest for the film. The film will hit theaters on July 21.

Vijay Antony Speaks About Kolai Heroines

The press meet of 'Kolai' was held in Chennai yesterday. Participating in the event, actor Vijay Antony said, "It is a happy thing that Balaji Kumar is directing a film in Tamil after many years. The film has come out well. When telling the story, first he said three heroines.

Then it became two. In it, Meenakshi was paired with another actor. Ritika is like a sister to me. They said I have only one wife. That character always fights with me. They keep me away from getting much romance in every film. I want justice. But, the film was a fun experience.

I have given a little break to music director Vijay Antony. I wish to introduce 20 music directors before I end my career. That's why I have stayed away from music. I will go and stand as clay before the directors. I will do whatever they say."

Kalki 2898 AD Review :

Kalki 2898 AD Review :
