Fully Funded PhD Programs in Economics

economics phd scholarships 2022

Last updated May 13, 2022

Following ProFellow Founder Dr. Vicki Johnson’s article on How To Fully Fund Your PhD , we began a series on fully-funded PhD programs in various disciplines. In this article, you’ll learn about the many fully-funded PhD Programs in Economics that are available.

We have many fellowships for doctoral study and dissertation research in the ProFellow database ; however, external doctoral fellowships are highly competitive and are usually short-term. Therefore, we recommend researching PhD programs that provide full funding to all incoming PhD students. “Full funding” typically includes full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why we recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Below is a list of universities that offer full funding to all of the admitted students to their PhD Programs in Economics:

Would you like to receive the full list of more than 1000+ fully funded programs in 60 disciplines? Download the FREE Directory of Fully Funded Graduate Programs and Full Funding Awards !

1. Cornell University, Department of Economics

(Ithaca, NY): Financial aid packages for incoming students are typically guaranteed, given satisfactory performance, through the Spring semester of the fifth year of study. Graduate research and teaching assistantships cover tuition, as well as an academic year stipend and medical insurance.

2. Harvard University, Department of Economics

(Cambridge, MA): Economic students receive full tuition and stipend support while they are enrolled and making satisfactory progress toward their PhD degree.

3. University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, PhD in Applied Economics

(Philadelphia, PA): All admitted Wharton doctoral students are provided guaranteed funding for five years that covers the cost of tuition, fees, health insurance, and a stipend. In contrast with other top Economics PhD programs, Wharton only requires one semester of teaching assistant work during the program’s third year, and one semester of research or teaching assistant work during the fourth year.

4. Vanderbilt University, PhD in Law and Economics

(Nashville, TN): Students are fully funded by a competitive package of fellowship support covering tuition and stipend for both degrees.

5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, PhD in Economics

(Cambridge, MA): Scholarship offers include full tuition for the academic year, health insurance, and a stipend/salary to cover living expenses for the nine-month academic year. Continuation of financial aid for years two through five is dependent on satisfactory academic progress. In the third through fifth year, financial aid typically takes the form of a Teaching or Research Assistantship. The 9-month stipend for teaching assistantships is about $35,000.

6. Fordham University, PhD in Economics

(New York City, NY): Fordham offers a 3-year fellowship package with optional funding for two to three additional years.

7. Binghamton University, PhD in Economics

(New York, NY): Approximately two-thirds of full-time Ph.D. students in the Economics Department are supported by fellowships and assistantships carrying an annual stipend plus a tuition scholarship and medical insurance. These awards are based exclusively on academic merit.

8. Duke University, PhD in Economics

(Durham, NC): 90 percent of admitted students or more receive six years of funding, so long as they remain in good academic standing.

9. Rice University, PhD in Economics

(Houston, TX): All admitted students receive an offer of financial support covering five years in return for a teaching or research assistantship. Continuation of the financial support beyond the first year is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress. Funding may be available beyond the fifth year for students who show exceptional promise.

10. Emory University, PhD in Economics

(Atlanta, GA): Students in the Economics Ph.D. program at Emory typically receive full funding for five years through the Laney Graduate School, as long as they make good academic progress.

11. Columbia University, PhD in Economics

(New York, NY): Columbia offers multi-year financial aid packages to admitted students that include fellowships and appointments to teaching and/or research positions. PhD students receive an annual stipend, tuition, and health fees for five years if they remain in good academic standing.

12. University of Kansas, PhD in Economics

(Lawrence, KS): Each year, a class of 7-10 students is awarded full funding. The five-year financial support package typically includes a full tuition waiver, a paid assistantship position, funding for conference travel, and more.

13. University of Wisconsin-Madison, PhD in Economics

(Madison, WI): All students will automatically be considered for five years of funding during their doctoral studies. Admitted students receive a guarantee of support for years two through five, contingent on maintaining satisfactory academic progress.

14. Johns Hopkins University, PhD in Economics

(Baltimore, MD): The department guarantees financial support for a minimum of five years of graduate study through a teaching or research assistantship conditional on satisfactory performance. The departmental fellowship covers full tuition costs plus an annual stipend of $33,000 and full student health insurance coverage.

15. University of California-Santa Barbara, PhD in Economics

(Santa Barbara, CA): The Department expects to offer a full financial aid package to all accepted Ph.D. students, which will cover full tuition, health insurance, and a stipend. Financial aid packages, which are a combination of Teaching Assistantships and fellowship money, are guaranteed for five years for students making satisfactory progress.

10 great PhD scholarships in the US for international students 2022

PhD scholarships

If you’re an international student looking for PhD scholarships, consider the US. With over 4,000 universities and six different time zones across 50 states, the US is one of the most popular study destinations in the world. Three main reasons why the US continues to attract PhD students despite their geographical location (usually taking up to two days to arrive from elsewhere) and high living costs as befits a developed nation, are outlined below.

Firstly, the US is home to many world-class universities with robust global  rankings – some of them are even in the top 100 world universities. Even though ranking is not an all-important reason to choose a university to do a PhD, it makes sense to study in one of the world’s best-ranked universities, and where else but to choose the US.

Secondly, the US PhD takes a longer time than PhDs in other countries. This is not necessarily a bad thing because when the US PhD takes up to five years or longer to complete, you will have more time to adjust, settle in and eventually thrive in your studies.

Finally, students doing their PhDs in the US are almost guaranteed to have a tuition fee waiver. They will get a stipend from the university for the entire duration of their studies as well, which makes for an attractive incentive.

However, if you want to get this funded PhD in the US, especially in the top-ranked universities, it is always a good idea to apply as early as possible before their deadlines. If you miss the scholarship deadline, you can still apply and be accepted for the PhD.

Here is a list of US PhD scholarships and stipends that will help you achieve your dream of studying in the US.

PhD Scholarship 1: University of Idaho

As one of the top 100 for the best value in the US, the University of Idaho is a great choice to do your PhD, thanks to the low cost of living and tuition fees. The College of Graduate Studies has several knowledgeable staff who can advise you on the wide array of financial aid resources as well.

You need to have a relevant master’s degree to be able to apply for this scholarship by Apr. 1, 2022. Their global world ranking is #67 (QS World University Rankings 2022) as well.

Through this Donald D. Harrington Graduate Fellows Programme Fellowship , recruited talented students are envisioned to share their knowledge and success with future generations. A stipend of US$40,000 for 12 months, tuition and required fees, an allowance for student medical insurance, and US$2,000 for miscellaneous expenses make up this generous funding package; the deadline is Jan. 24, 2022.

PhD Scholarship 8: University of Oregon

This scholarship, funded by the Kocin family, is awarded to promote women in the field of labor economics.

Walter A. Morton Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship supports a meritorious doctoral student in the Department of Economics and was created through a fund established in 1984 by Rosalie Morton (BS 1928), widow of late UW Economics Professor Walter Morton (Ph.D. 1927), and her son Stephen D. Morton (Ph.D. 1962).

Mary Claire Aschenbrener Phipps Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship was established by Charles Phipps in honor of his late wife, Mary Claire Phipps (BA ’51, Economics) to attract more female economists to the University of Wisconsin to inspire the next generation of female economists. The fellowship supports an outstanding female doctoral student.

Dorothy Rice Dissertation Fellowship

The Dorothy Rice Dissertation Fellowship was created in memory of health care economics pioneer and UW Alumna Dorothy Rice (Ph.D. 1941) who left a lasting legacy on the Federal Health Care Policy. Her research paved way for the creation of the Medicare program. The fellowship is awarded to an outstanding doctoral student in the Department of Economics.

Robock Scholarship in Empirical or Experimental Economics

The late Dr. Stefan Robock established this scholarship.  Professor Robock received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1938. He did graduate work at Wisconsin and Harvard.  The purpose of Dr. Robock’s gift is to support students and research by students and faculty in the Department of Economics, with preference being given to those doing empirical and/or field research or working in the field of experimental economics.

Shih Graduate Student Fellowship (Ko and Ying Shih Dissertation Fellowship)

May Shih and Willy Shih have honored their parents, Ko and Ying Shih, by establishing a fellowship in their names to assist graduate students in the Department of Economics. Ko Shih received his PhD in Economics (1950) and Ying Shih received her PhD in Applied Statistics (1952) at UW-Madison. Both Ko and Ying Shih were international students, so their children, May Shih and Willy Shih, would like the funds to be used for a dissertation fellowship with a slight preference given to international students.

Mary Sue and Mike Shannon Dissertation Fellowship

Richard E. Stockwell Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship was established by a trust created by Richard E. “Archie” Stockwell. Archie received his B.S. in 1940 from the University of Wisconsin. The fellowship is awarded to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in research.

Walker Family Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship, offered by the Department of Economics, was established by a trust created by Willard T. Walker (BA Economics 1955) and Willard T. Walker Jr. (BA Economics 1984) and Molly Walker Allen (BA Journalism and Mass Communication 1989) to recognize outstanding research potential and overall research excellence. The annual one semester dissertation fellowship is designed to support a doctoral student in Economics.

Graduate Program

Ph.d. studies at princeton economics.

The Ph.D. program at Princeton Economics is one of the premier economics programs in the world. The small number of students admitted each year receive training in an exceptional research environment, supported by faculty members who are working at the forefront of research in their fields.

Admission to the program is extremely selective. Each year, the department receives approximately 800 applications for a class of 20 to 25 students. Students come from diverse backgrounds and from dozens of countries around the globe.

Princeton provides all admitted Ph.D. students tuition and fellowship support for the academic year. Admitted students also receive fellowship support through the summer months so they can continue their study and research when classes are not in session.

The Economics Department at Princeton does not offer a Master’s Degree. Students looking for information about the Master in Finance can learn more on the Princeton Bendheim Center for Finance website .

The Ph.D. Program in the Department of Economics at Harvard is addressed to students of high promise who wish to prepare themselves in teaching and research in academia or for responsible positions in government, research organizations, or business enterprises. Students are expected to devote themselves full-time to their programs of study.

The program prepares students for productive and stimulating careers as economists. Courses and seminars offered by the department foster an intellectually active and stimulating environment. Each week, the department sponsors more than 15 different seminars on such topics as environmental economics, economic growth and development, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics, industrial organization, law and economics, behavioral economics, labor economics, and economic history. Top scholars from both domestic and international communities are often invited speakers at the seminars.  The Harvard community outside of the department functions as a strong and diverse resource. Students in the department are free to pursue research interests with scholars throughout the University. Faculty of the Harvard Law School, Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Business School, for example, are available to students for consultation, instruction, and research guidance. As a member of the Harvard community, students in the department can register for courses in the various schools and have access to the enormous library resources available through the University. There are over 90 separate library units at Harvard, with the total collections of books and pamphlets numbering over 13 million.  Both the department and the wider University draw some of the brightest students from around the world, which makes for a student body that is culturally diverse and likely unequaled in the range of intellectual interests of its members. These factors combine to add an important dimension to the educational process. Students are able to learn from one another, collaborate on research projects and publications, and form bonds that are not broken by distance once the degree is completed and professional responsibilities lead them in different directions.
