How To Write a USCIS Cover Letter
Preparing an immigration application for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires filling out complex paperwork and gathering supporting documents. Using a cover letter is a great way to keep your application materials organized and make sure you don’t miss any required documents. It’s also a good opportunity to highlight anything you want USCIS to know about your application. This article explains what a cover letter is and the elements it should include. It also includes a template you can use to write your own.

What Is a USCIS Cover Letter?
A cover letter is a document that helps USCIS officers navigate your application materials. You can place a cover letter at the top of your citizenship , permanent resident , DACA , or visa application package. By outlining your reasons for applying and the contents of your application in a cover letter, you give your USCIS officer a useful overview of your case. You can also use your cover letter as a personal checklist to make sure you’ve included all necessary documents in your package.
You may also use a cover letter to explain any special circumstances you want the USCIS officer to be aware of before they start reviewing your application. If you have a unique or complicated background, it is especially helpful to supplement your application with a cover letter. It will ensure that USCIS becomes aware of any special circumstances and can consider your application with this in mind.
Is a Cover Letter Required for My USCIS Application?
USCIS does not require you to submit a cover letter for any immigration benefit or visa application. Many immigration attorneys include cover letters for their clients to prevent any misunderstandings or missing paperwork. Immigration officers read through a lot of paperwork, so any guidance or organization you can offer them will be helpful.
Cover letters may be especially helpful when you are in a unique situation. Suppose you are applying for a marriage green card with Form I-130 : Petition for Alien Relative, and you and your spouse have lived apart for some time. You and your U.S. citizen or green card holder spouse can use a cover letter to explain this or any other unusual circumstances behind your marriage.
USCIS will want to know the reasons behind an unusual living or marriage situation when evaluating your adjustment of status application. A cover letter can help you address any major concerns at the beginning of the process.
What Should My USCIS Cover Letter Include?
When submitting a cover letter with your application, be sure to include the following:
The USCIS filing location or lockbox address to which you’re sending your application
The date of filing
An appropriate subject (re:) line
A short introductory paragraph to describe the contents of your letter and package
If applying for a marriage-related benefit, information about the marriage date and location for yourself (the beneficiary) and your spouse (the petitioner)
An ordered list of the content in your application package, including all supporting documents and filing or biometrics fees included
A closing paragraph including your contact information
Your signature and full printed name
Your supporting documents for an application will depend on which forms you’re filing. You can determine which documents are necessary by reviewing USCIS’ webpage for your specific form. For example, USCIS lists the required supporting evidence on its webpage for Form N-400 applicants.
You’ll also need to identify the right mailing address for your application. To do so, you should consult the USCIS website. For example, naturalization applicants can review USCIS’s webpage for Form N-400 direct filing addresses .
Your filing fees will depend on your specific application type. You can use the USCIS Fee Calculator to determine your costs. For example, suppose you are filing for naturalization with Form N-400. You should select Form N-400 on the Fee Calculator and enter your age. USCIS may ask for additional information, such as your specific application category.

Tips for Writing Your USCIS Cover Letter
When writing a USCIS cover letter, be sure to type your letter in English on a computer. Keep your letter concise and only include necessary information. A long cover letter will not be as helpful to a USCIS officer as a brief letter. If possible, keep your letter to one page. Be sure to proofread your letter before submitting your application package.

How to Write an I-485 Cover Letter: Essential Tips for a Successful Application
When applying for an adjustment of status in the United States, one essential component of the application is the I-485 cover letter. This letter serves not only as an introduction to the applicant’s file but also provides a summary of the enclosed documents. It functions as a guide for reviewing officers to understand the elements of the submission, and it frames the context in which the applicant is seeking permanent residency.
A well-structured I-485 cover letter adheres to a formal, professional format, ensuring that all necessary information is conveyed efficiently. Such a cover letter will typically include the applicant’s contact information, an assertation of eligibility, and an indexed enumeration of the supporting documents. This helps in presenting a coherent narrative about the applicant’s intent, background, and legal basis for the adjustment of status request.
The cover letter is an applicant’s first opportunity to directly communicate with the adjudicating authorities. Therefore, clarity and adherence to the required guidelines signal the seriousness and preparedness of the candidate. It provides a personal touch to the application, emphasizing the applicant’s commitment to following through with the process.
Understanding the Purpose of Form I-485
Form I-485 is integral for individuals seeking to change their status to lawful permanent residency in the United States without the need to return to their home country for visa processing.
Overview of Adjustment of Status
Adjustment of status refers to the process that allows eligible individuals already in the U.S. to apply for permanent resident status, also known as obtaining a Green Card. Form I-485, officially titled “Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status,” is the primary form used in this process. Upon approval, applicants can legally live and work in the U.S. indefinitely.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for adjustment of status through Form I-485, applicants must fall into specific categories:
- They must be physically present in the United States.
- They must have entered the U.S. legally and maintained lawful status.
- There must be a visa immediately available to them.
Additional 485 application requirements depend on the specific immigrant category under which they are applying, such as family-based, employment-based, or as a special immigrant. Applicants should review the detailed eligibility criteria set by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to ensure they meet all the conditions before applying.
Preparing to Write the Cover Letter
Preparing a cover letter for the I-485 application is a meticulous process that requires attention to detail. The applicant must ensure all pertinent information is gathered and understand the letter’s components to construct a clear, concise, and effective document.
Gathering Necessary Information
Key information must be assembled before drafting the cover letter for an I-485 application. The applicant should have the following details at hand:
- Personal Information : Full name, address, date of birth, and Alien Registration Number (if applicable).
- Application Details : Precise title and the form number of the application being submitted, in this case, Form I-485 for Adjustment of Status.
- Supporting Documents : A checklist of documents that will accompany the I-485, such as evidence of the applicant’s nationality, financial support, and relationship to a sponsoring family member or employer.
Understanding the Components of the Cover Letter
A well-structured cover letter should consist of the following elements:
- Introduction : Clearly state the purpose of the letter and the type of application. For example, “I am submitting an application for Adjustment of Status to permanent resident.”
- Copy of the applicant’s passport
- Birth certificate
- Employment verification, if applicable
- Conclusion : A polite statement thanking the USCIS for considering the application, coupled with the applicant’s contact information for any correspondence.
Structuring the Cover Letter
A well-structured I-485 cover letter facilitates clear communication with USCIS, illustrating the applicant’s eligibility and organization. It is imperative to adhere to a professional and orderly layout.
Header and Greeting
The cover letter begins with the applicant’s contact information , aligned to the left. It should include the applicant’s full name, address, phone number, and email. The date follows, and then USCIS’s address, to which the application is being sent. The greeting, ideally, addresses a specific person or a general greeting such as “Dear USCIS Officer,” if the name isn’t known.
Opening Paragraph
The opening paragraph should state the purpose of the letter : the submission of Form I-485 for Adjustment of Status. The applicant should also mention the primary basis for the adjustment, whether it’s family, employment, or another eligible category.
Body of the Letter
In the body, applicants list the documents included in the application package. Use bullet points for clarity, such as:
- Completed Form I-485
- Copy of birth certificate
- Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record
- Two passport-style photographs
Highlight any key features of the application here, like accompanying forms or the basis of eligibility, and reference any fees paid.
Closing Paragraph
Conclude by reaffirming the intent to adjust status and thanking the officer for their consideration. Offer availability for any further information or interviews that might be required. Close with a formal sign-off, such as “Sincerely,” followed by the applicant’s signature and printed name.
Detailing the Contents of Your Application
When preparing an I-485 cover letter, it is crucial for the applicant to detail the contents of their application package to facilitate a clear review by USCIS.
Listing Enclosed Documents
The applicant should begin with a comprehensive list of all documents enclosed within the application package. This list serves as a quick reference for USCIS officers to verify the presence of required materials.
- Form I-485 : Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status
- Government-issued identity document with a photograph : Such as a copy of a passport biographic page or birth certificate
- Form G-325A : Biographic Information (if applicable)
- Form I-693 : Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record
- Form I-864 : Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the INA (if applicable)
- Form I-765 : Application for Employment Authorization (if filing concurrently)
- Form I-131 : Application for Travel Document (if applicable)
- Evidence of eligibility : Based on the applicable category, such as a copy of an approval notice for an immigrant petition
- Two passport-style photos
Explaining Special Circumstances
If the application involves any special circumstances that deviate from standard procedures, they must be explained clearly and concisely. This could include reasons for any missing documents or the need for expedited processing.
- Reason for missing documents : If a required document is unobtainable, the applicant should include a detailed explanation along with any supporting evidence.
- Request for expedited processing : When applicable, such as in emergency situations, the applicant should provide a compelling reason backed by evidence to justify the request.
Finalizing Your Cover Letter
Before sending off your I-485 cover letter, ensure it is error-free, well-formatted, and duly signed to present your application professionally.
Proofreading and Editing
The applicant should meticulously review their cover letter for any spelling, grammar, or factual inaccuracies. Double-check all dates, names, and critical details against the other application documents for consistency. Having another person proofread the document provides an extra layer of assurance.
- Spelling/Grammar : Use tools like spell check but also read aloud for natural language flow.
- Accuracy : Verify names, dates, and details.
- Consistency : Ensure alignment with other application materials in terms of information and tone.
Professional Formatting Tips
A structured, neat, and professional appearance of the cover letter leaves a positive impression. Use a standard business letter format.
- Font : Stick to professional fonts such as Times New Roman or Arial, size 10-12.
- Margins : Keep uniform margins of 1″ around the document.
- Alignment : Left-align the entire text, keeping it single-spaced with a space between paragraphs.
Signature and Date
A physically signed cover letter adds a personal touch and shows attentiveness. The applicant must sign and date the cover letter to validate its authenticity.
- Signature : Sign in blue or black ink above your typed name.
- Date : Write the date below your signature in MM/DD/YYYY format.
Component | Details |
---|---|
Signature | Blue or black ink above typed name |
Date | Format: MM/DD/YYYY below the signature |

How to Assemble Your Adjustment of Status Package
Home » How to Assemble Your Adjustment of Status Package
May 3, 2021
As you prepare your adjustment of status application, you might begin to notice that the stack of documents can get particularly large. For applicants filing the Form I-130 concurrently with Form I-485 , it might even be overwhelming.
The documents shouldn’t be carelessly thrown in an envelope and sent to USCIS. They must be presented in a way that USCIS can easily understand your intentions and find your supporting documents. Assembling your adjustment of status package may take some planning.
What Not to Do
First, it may be easiest to explain what not to do when assembling your adjustment of status package. Do not use binders or folders that USCIS cannot easily disassemble. Do not use heavy-duty staples; instead use fasteners or heavy clips.
Assembling the Adjustment Package
The golden rules of assembling your package might be: Make it easy. Keep it organized.
There is no single right way to assemble an adjustment of status package. If you are able to present a well-organized package, USCIS will be able to intake your case more quickly and easily. There will be less chance of lost documents and Request for Evidence (RFE) .
Many law firms use a two-prong folder or ACCO fastener to organize applications and supporting documents. The documents stay in place, are protected, and can be easily disassembled by USCIS. In order to do this correctly, you’ll need to purchase or have access to a two-hole punch. That’s not necessary.
You may use a combination of paper clips and binder clips to secure each group of documents.
Mistakes on your I-485 application can cause costly delays or a denial.
Order of documents.
USCIS recommends assembling your family-based adjustment of status package in the following order:
- Check, money order or credit card payment (G-1450)
- Cover letter with an itemization of the package contents
- Form G-1145, Request for e-Notification (if applicable)
- Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status
- Supporting documents for Form I-485
- Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative
- Supporting documents for Form I-130
- Form I-130A, Supplemental Information for Spouse Beneficiary
- Supporting documents for Form I-130A
- Form I-864, Affidavit of Support
- Supporting documents for Form I-864
- Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization
- Supporting documents for Form I-765
- Form I-131, Application for Travel Document
- Supporting documents for Form I-131
- Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record
Not every adjustment of status application includes all of the forms listed above. This example is for the immediate relative spouse of a U.S. citizen filing a concurrent immigrant petition.
Multiple Cases
If you have multiple family members filing applications together, be cautious about combining them. USCIS will process them separately anyway. If the cases are not clearly separated upon arrival at USCIS, the disorganization could create a delay for each. What’s more, USCIS is notorious for losing items. If you are sending more than one case in an envelope, clearly separate the cases by rubber band or fasteners.
RECOMMENDED: Should I file my family’s I-485 applications in the same envelope?

A Cover Letter has two (2) benefits. First, it is a nice document for a USCIS Officer to receive when they open a packet. It allows the officer to quickly see a snapshot of the filing. Second, the Cover Letter forces the filer to review what they are sending. If Anything important is missing, it is more evident than in a stack of papers 300 to 500 pages thick.
Evidence is “VERY IMPORTANT” for every Immigration Filing. To see our template checklist, please visit our Immigration Checklist: https://www.fickeymartinezlaw.com/immigration-checklist/
Common Questions:
Where can i confirm immigration fees.
USCIS Offers the following USCIS Immigration Fee Tool to assist in providing USCIS the proper filing fee: https://www.uscis.gov/feecalculator
Additionally, USCIS.gov also states the fee for each USCIS Form.
Where can I confirm the USCIS Mailing Address?
USCIS.gov is the ONLY place you should confirm/receive the USCIS Mailing Address.
Are the I-765 and I-131 free with an I-485?
Yes. The Employment Authorization and Advance Parole/Travel Document are free when filed with an I-485 Adjustment of Status Filing.
Do I need Passport Photos for the filing?
Yes, most Green Card related filings require passport-style photos, or they are highly recommended. When in doubt, add them to the filing.
Are Copies of Documents ok?
Yes, copies of all documents are acceptable, as long as the copy is a nice color scan. The only time to provide original documents is when they are specifically requested by USCIS, and when submitting Certified Copies of Court, Police, and Prison Records.
What type of documents should I attach with a filing?

Tips for writing an architecture cover letter
Writing an architecture job cover letter is the first opportunity you have in impressing an employer enough for them to consider hiring you. Even in the digital age a cover letter for architecture job is a very important thing to get right. The above architecture cover letter is a good starting template for writing your own letter. The below advice and tips will explain further what you need to write.
- Architecture is an extremely professional field to work in and first impressions count. Ensure you letter is properly laid out and formatted with a formal letter template and a readable font.
- Keep your cover letter short, one page is ideal.
- Write in the active voice (I started the architecture project) instead of the passive voice (The architecture project I started). This will sell you more directly.
- Make sure your cover letter is unique for the specific firm you are applying to. Avoid sending out a templated cover letter with the names and information changed on each. Write specific to that company’s requirements.
- Keep a positive and direct tone throughout the letter. At this stage provide a summary of your skills and experience to date such as your academic qualifications and the length you have been working in the field.
- Start to expand on this with some specific details of your experience. This candidate explains who they have been working for since graduation and the types of work they have been undertaking. Whilst being positive and selling yourself don’t provide too much information. You want to need a follow-up conversation to sell yourself further.
- As well as your specific projects outline what skills you have such as skills and software you are proficient in for delivering architecture projects.
- Start to apply all this practical skill and experience to your personality and how this all creates a package for you as a candidate. Sell yourself positively and illustrate how you as a person makes you stand out from other people applying.
- Employers also want to see that you have considered what it would be like to work for them. Explain what it is you like about their company (use examples if possible) and relate that to how you would fit into their working culture.
- Remind the employer that you are keen to get the job and would like the opportunity to discuss that matter further.
- Don’t send off your architecture cover letter before properly proofreading it. Typos and mistakes are likely to get your cover letter rejected on a technicality and not based on your actual skills. If possible get another person to read it over as well.

I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status
Alert: USCIS has prioritized employment-based adjustment of status applications during every step of its processing and adjudication during this fiscal year. We continue to make processing and resource allocation decisions to increase the pace of adjudications and limit the potential for employment-based visa numbers to go unused. If you are applying for a Green Card in an employment-based category and we issued you a Request for Evidence (RFE) for your Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record , you should respond as soon as possible so we can finalize a decision on your adjustment application.
ALERT: If you are concurrently filing a Form I-140 and Form I-485, do not combine your supporting documents. Clearly separate each package using fasteners or heavy clips to hold together each set. We recommend assembling each form package in the following order:
- Check or money order or Form G-1450, Authorization for Credit Card Transactions ;
- Form G-1145, Request for e-Notification (if applicable);
- Form G-28 (if applicable);
- The form you are filing; and
- Supporting documentation.
For additional information visit: Tips for Filing Forms by Mail
ALERT: Effective April 4, 2024, any Form I-693 that was properly completed and signed by a civil surgeon on or after Nov. 1, 2023, does not expire, and can be used indefinitely as evidence to show that the applicant is not inadmissible on health-related grounds. For more information, see the Policy Alert .
ALERT: Below are ways you can help prevent an unnecessary delay in the adjudication of your Form I-485:
Below are ways you can help prevent an unnecessary delay in the adjudication of your Form I-485:
- Submit your Form I-693, Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, at the same time you file your Form I-485;
- File all required initial evidence and supporting documentation as described in the form instructions. You may use the Checklist of Required Initial Evidence as an optional resource; and
- Use the current edition for Form I-485.
Submitting all required initial evidence and supporting documentation at the same time you file Form I-485 may eliminate the need for us to issue a Request for Evidence (RFE) to obtain additional evidence and documentation, which may further delay adjudication of your case.
If you are required to submit a Form I-693, we cannot approve your Form I-485 without your Form I-693. We generally consider a completed Form I-693 to remain valid for two years after the date the civil surgeon signed it.
Use this form to apply for lawful permanent resident status if you are in the United States.

04/01/24 . You can find the edition date at the bottom of the page on the form and instructions.
Dates are listed in mm/dd/yy format.
If you complete and print this form to mail it, make sure that the form edition date and page numbers are visible at the bottom of all pages and that all pages are from the same form edition. If any of the form’s pages are missing or are from a different form edition, we may reject your form.
If you need help downloading and printing forms, read our instructions .
Where you file your Form I-485 depends on your eligibility category. Go to our Direct Filing Addresses for Form I-485 page to see where you should file your application.
If you file at a USCIS lockbox, you may not receive an A-Number on your Form I-797, Notice of Action, due to a change in our business process. In these cases, we will send your A-Number in a second notice a few days after accepting your application.
In general, you may not file your Form I-485 until a visa is available in your category. For information on the process of adjusting status as a permanent resident, and how to determine whether and when you are eligible to adjust status and file Form I-485, see our Visa Availability and Priority Dates and Adjustment of Status Filing Charts from the Visa Bulletin pages. For exceptions to the visa availability requirement, please check the Form I-485 instructions for your specific immigrant category for additional information.
You can find the filing fee for Form I-485 by visiting our Fee Schedule page.
You can pay the fee with a money order, personal check, cashier's check, or pay by credit card or debit card using Form G-1450, Authorization for Credit Card Transactions . If you pay by check, you must make your check payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
When you send a payment, you agree to pay for a government service. Filing fees are final and non-refundable, regardless of any action we take on your application, petition, or request, or if you withdraw your request. If you pay by credit card or debit card, you cannot later dispute the payment. Use our Fee Calculator to help determine your fee.
If you are submitting multiple forms, pay each filing fee separately. We are transitioning to electronically processing immigration benefit requests, which requires us to use multiple systems to process your package. We may reject your entire package if you submit a single, combined payment for multiple forms.
Save time by submitting all required initial evidence and supporting documentation at the same time you file Form I-485.
View the checklist of required initial evidence.
The checklist is an optional tool to use as you prepare your form, but does not replace statutory, regulatory, and form instruction requirements. Submitting all required initial evidence and supporting documentation at the same time you file Form I-485 may eliminate the need for us to issue a Request for Evidence to obtain additional documentation and evidence. This may also help avoid adjudication delays if we decide that you do not need to be interviewed.
You may also save time by submitting Form I-693, Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, with your Form I-485. We generally consider a completed Form I-693 to remain valid for two years after the date the civil surgeon signed it.
Filing Tips: Review our Tips for Filing Forms by Mail page for information on how to ensure we will accept your form.
Don’t forget to sign your form. We will reject any unsigned form.
E-Notification : If you want to receive an e-mail and/or text message that we have accepted your form at a USCIS lockbox, complete Form G-1145, E-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance , and clip it to the first page of your form.
Effective July 20, 2022, we transitioned the responsibility to adjudicate Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) petitions filed by Afghans to the U.S. Department of State (DOS). Afghans who start the SIV application process on or after July 20, 2022, may seek classification as a special immigrant with DOS by filing Form DS-157 with the application for Chief of Mission approval. For more information, see instructions on the DOS website on Special Immigrant Visas for Afghans – Who Were Employed by/on Behalf of the U.S. Government .

Visit our Form I-485, Supplement J page for specific instructions on when and how to file Supplement J.
Filing Form I-765 and Form I-131 with Form I-485
If you submitted Form I-485 on or after July 30, 2007, and before April 1, 2024, and paid the required fee, you do not have to pay an additional fee to also file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization , and/or Form I-131, Application for Travel Document . However, if you file Form I-485 after April 1, 2024, you must pay additional fees to file Form I-765 or Form I-131, as listed on our Fee Schedule page. In either case, you may submit these forms together. If you choose not to file Form I-765 and/or Form I-131 with your Form I-485, then you must submit a copy of your I-797C, Notice of Action, (also known as your receipt) as evidence that you filed Form I-485.

Good examples of cover letters for I-130, I-485, "overall", etc.?
I'm on this page:
https://www.visajourney.com/guides/i130-spouse-inside-usa/
For both the I-130 and the I-485 it says to submit a cover letter.
"Cover Letter. Should include a description of what your are petitioning for (I-130), a table of contents (list everything in the packet). If you need additional room to explain your case, attach a separate sheet (list the attachment on the cover sheet). Make sure to sign and date the cover sheet."
It also says it is a good idea to create an optional cover letter "overall" about the various packages:
"It is useful to add an overall cover sheet with the description of the package and pertinent information such as the applicants name and address. Make sure the cover sheet indicates the package is an Immediate Relative (Spouse) Family Based Adjustment of Status Application with a concurrent I-130 filing. List the major contents of the package (i.e. I-485 and evidence, I-130 and evidence, I-765, I-131,etc)."
This all SEEMS pretty straightforward to me but I'd still like to see some examples if possible. I know that probably no one is posting their official documents online, but there have to be samples or something out there, right?
