How Do You Spend Your Weekends? IELTS Speaking (10 Example Answers)

You might be asked about your weekends in part one of your IELTS Speaking test. A common question would be, “How do you spend your weekends?” or “What do you usually do on weekends?”

At the Weekend vs On the Weekend

In the US, we usually say ‘on the weekend’ and in the UK we usually say ‘at the weekend.’

What You Can Talk About

Tip: use frequency phrases.

This kind of question is a good opportunity to talk about frequency (how often you do something) and use some interesting frequency words or phrases.

Keep It Simple and Fluent

In part one, there’s no need to try very hard to use advanced vocabulary and grammar.

In part two, you will have more time to think about your answer. So save your advanced vocabulary for then.

Use the Three-Step YES Method

Example answers.

Here are 10 good example answers to this question. Read them and think of ideas for your own answer.

Chores and Errands

Meet friends.

3. I love to stay in shape, so at the weekend I wake up early and go jogging, the same as I do on weekdays. I also go to the gym for yoga classes and on Sunday afternoon I play tennis with my friends, more often than not.

Take Kids to the Park

6. I’m in the habit of taking my kids to the park on the weekend if the weather’s nice. I’m very busy during the week, so the weekend is the only chance I get to spend quality time with them.

English Classes

9. Usually, I try to visit an interesting place on the weekend with my family, like a museum or famous sight or a beautiful garden. And every now and then, we go on a day trip to another city nearby.

Nothing Much

Now it’s your turn to try.

Turn on the recorder on your phone and ask out loud, “How do you spend your weekends?” or “What do you usually do on weekends?”

Then do it again, and again, and again.

Band-9 Samples: How do you usually spend your weekends? [Why?]

This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the  Cambridge IELTS 10 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 1 Test 1  question:

“How do you usually spend your weekends? [Why?]”

For me, weekends are all about rejuvenating after a long week. I usually opt for a laid-back approach, spending my time at home, indulging in my favorite books, or catching up on TV series. It’s not the most adventurous routine, but it gives me a sense of tranquility that I truly cherish.

As someone deeply invested in fitness, I utilize my weekends for intensive workout sessions. My typical Saturday or Sunday involves a mix of cardio, strength training, and yoga. It’s demanding, I won’t deny, but it helps me maintain a healthy lifestyle and also boosts my mental well-being.

My weekends are typically bustling with social activities. I’m the kind of person who thrives on interaction and camaraderie. So, whether it’s a casual brunch with friends or a lively evening party, I try to fill my off days with as much human connection as possible. It’s a simple way to unwind and it keeps me in high spirits.

My weekends are often consumed by my quest to master the English language. I’ve set a target to be fluent, so I dedicate a good chunk of my free time to studying. I might spend hours engrossed in English novels, watching English movies to improve my listening skills, or participating in language exchange meetups to practice speaking. It keeps me intellectually stimulated and I believe it will open a plethora of opportunities for me in the future.

Weekends for me are usually about committing time to my side business. It’s a venture I’m really passionate about and I believe it holds the potential to create a substantive financial return in the future. The idea is not just to accumulate wealth, but to achieve a level of financial independence that could give me the freedom I desire.

Typically, my weekends are dedicated to cherishing the bond I share with my family. Given the demanding nature of my job, it’s often challenging to carve out quality time for my loved one during the weekdays. So, I make it a point to devote my off days to them, engaging in activities that we all enjoy and love.

Living in a bustling city, my weekends are typically planned as a much-needed escape. I usually drive out to the outskirts or a quiet rural area. These short trips provide a refreshing change of scenery and a chance to breathe in some fresh, unpolluted air. It’s a sort of stress-busting therapy for me, a perfect antidote to the week-long urban commotion.

I usually spend my weekends indulging in delicious meals, hanging out with friends at cozy coffee spots, or watching intriguing movies. The reason is quite simple: these activities provide me with the perfect blend of relaxation, socialization, and entertainment that I need after a hectic week. Plus, it’s a great way to keep my life balanced and enjoyable.

Typically, I spend my weekends taking a brief bus ride back to my family home from the university dormitory. I’m fortunate enough that my home is only about 50 to 60 kilometers away, which makes this commute quite manageable. I find solace in the familiarity of my home surroundings and the company of my family. This simple routine allows me to escape the academic intensity and refresh my mind for the coming week.

I often spend my weekends working at a local store. I took up this part-time job not just because I come from a financially-challenged family and need to afford my meals, but also because I believe in self-sufficiency. I find it enriching as it helps me grow as an individual and understand the value of money.

Here is a sample “How I Spent My Day” Essay

Today felt like a page out of a storybook, with unexpected surprises and happy moments. As the sun woke me up, it was the start of a day filled with routines and exciting surprises.

My morning began with the sound of my alarm, and I got out of bed ready for a brand-new day. The smell of fresh coffee made the kitchen cozy, and a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast got me geared up for whatever lay ahead.

Walking outside, I noticed the world waking up around me. The streets were buzzing with people going about their day, and the air was filled with the sounds of footsteps, distant traffic, and birds chirping. It was like a canvas painted with regular stuff, but each bit had the potential for something amazing.

My day was planned out neatly on my schedule. Work and fun were both on the agenda, and everything flowed smoothly. But what made the day special were the unexpected surprises. Running into an old friend at the café and deciding to take a different path during my afternoon walk were like exciting plot twists in my day’s story.

The best part of my day was the conversations. Whether chatting about projects with my colleagues or sharing stories with a stranger at the park, every talk added a layer to my day’s story. It was like the magic of connecting with people made the day come alive.

As the afternoon sun started to set, casting a warm glow over everything, I sat back and thought about the day. Things didn’t go exactly as planned, but that was okay. The day became a mix of work, play, and surprises. And as I looked back, I realized it was not just about what I did; it was about how I felt, what I learned, and the connections I made.

The evening was calm, with dinner being a relaxed time for thinking. Today was not just a list of things done; it was a story. Each moment, from the usual to the amazing, made my story special. As I closed my eyes, ready for a good night’s sleep, I wondered what stories tomorrow would bring.

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: WEEKEND [ANSWERS]

Of course! Who doesn’t like weekends? (rhetorical question – doesn’t need an answer, it is only used to add a dramatic effect) I really believe that every one of us loves weekends as we don’t need to wake up early to go to work or school. It’s the time that we can recharge our batteries (to regain our strength and energy by resting and relaxing for a time) and do something that can make us feel good. How I wish every day is a weekend!

I love weekends! Weekends are the only days that I can destress (relax after a period of work) myself. So, every weekend I make sure to do the things that I love, such as walking with my dog at the park, malling, gardening, and cooking new recipes. Today is halfway (in the middle of the period of time) through the week and you don’t have any idea how excited I am for the weekend to come.

(Answer 1)

(Answer 2)

Honestly, I was kind of lazy last weekend, I didn’t do anything productive as I just wanted to get a good rest. I just lay on my bed for hours and hours and spent time binge-watching ( watching several episodes) my favorite TV series. I don’t usually do that, but for some reason, I wasn’t inspired to do something valuable and I think that’s alright since it’s not all the time that we’re at our best ( in one’s most excellent condition or state) .

(Answer 4)

Do you like going to the cinema on weekends?

We ran around, kicked the ball, and I even scored a goal. After the game, we were all very tired but happy. I spent the rest of the day reading my favorite comic books and playing with my dog. In the evening, my dad helped me with my homework. We finished it together and then watched a funny movie on TV. Before going to bed, I thought about my weekend. It was full of fun, games, and laughter. I can’t wait for the next one to come! It was a weekend well spent.

Paragraph on How I Spent My Weekend in 250 Words

This weekend was one of the most enjoyable ones I’ve had in a long time. On Saturday morning, I woke up early and had a delicious breakfast of fluffy pancakes and fresh orange juice. After breakfast, I decided to take my dog, Charlie, for a long walk in the nearby park. The park was full of people enjoying the sunny weather and Charlie had a great time playing with other dogs. Later in the day, I spent some time reading my favorite book, ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’. It’s always fun to spend time in the magical world of Hogwarts. In the evening, I helped my dad in the garden. We planted some new flowers and watered the plants. It felt good to be connected with nature. On Sunday, my family decided to go on a picnic. We packed a basket full of sandwiches, fruits, and cookies, and went to a beautiful spot near a lake. We had a lot of fun playing games, eating, and laughing together. I even tried my hand at fishing, although I didn’t catch anything. In the evening, we returned home tired but happy. Before going to bed, I spent some time doing my homework. Although it was not as fun as the rest of the weekend, it felt good to finish my work on time. Overall, this weekend was filled with joy, relaxation, and a bit of work. It was a perfect balance of everything I love.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topic: How would like to spend an ideal weekend

describe how you spend your weekends essay

How would like to spend an ideal weekend Where would you spend the weekend? With whom with you spend it? How much money would you spend?

I am a very busy man these days. All my work is associated with interacting with different people and going to different places. If I ever get a chance to spend my ideal weekend I would most probably spend it at my house. I travel a lot and would not like to go to another place to spend my ideal weekend so I would stay at my house to spend my ideal weekend.

I would spend my ideal weekend with my cousins. I would order some burgers from Mc Donald’s and eat them at my house. I would also buy some DVDs and watch at least 4 to 5 movies in a day. I would like to spend in an isolated manner with just a few friends or family members. I want to tell you about my last weekend. I could regard it as my ideal weekend because I spent the weekend doing nothing rather than just watching movies and eating a lot of food. If I get a chance I would like to plan a similar kind of weekend pretty soon.

Some of my friends spend hundreds of dollars to plan and organize an ideal weekend but my ideal weekend can be organized in 50 dollars. I do not think that a person needs to spend a lot of money to make him or her happy. Some people spend a lot of money to organize their ideal weekend but they still feel unhappy and sad.

I like watch america tv shows. I like play game.

I spend my time to check a new opportunity to improve my English language. I need more help, I like English but English doesn’t like me.

Greetings First, I would like to thank you for helping us learn English. All content is excellent, beneficial, and well-organized. Second, due to the change of place, for more than three months, all my weekends are spent on housework. But basically, resting, going to the park or the beach, and visiting my family are my main activities on weekends.

I usually spend my time on weekends together with my spouse and dog. We like to get coffee at Palmieri Cafe, an Italian coffee shop and bakery in the Dallas Farmer Market. Another great program is walking in White Rock Lake Park, a beautiful park around the lake. Visiting the museums in Dallas or the Kimbell Museum in Forth Worth is also always a good option.

I don’t have weekends because I usually work on them, but sometimes I have one spare weekend a month, so I make the most of it.

I usually spend my weekends with my family, and I go on a long walk in the morning. In the evening, I watch TV shows or movies with my family members. Shopping is one of the main activities on my weekends.

Hello everybody. I usually try to rest on my weekends although that is not always possible. There are so many things we aren’t able to do during the work days, so the time is less than we think. Nevertheless i try to find some time mostly to play with my kind and if i manage to read an interesting article or a nice book.

Greetings, I spend my time with going to a park for walking & enjoying the nature.

5 Smarter Ways to Spend Your Weekend Time, According to Super Successful People

painter

What do super successful people have in common? Drive? Impressive accomplishments? Influence? Yes, yes, and yes, but they also share a surprising number of weekend habits.

They don’t simply maximize their hours while they’re at work, high-achievers also use their “days off” to supercharge themselves. And you can adopt the same habits and be more productive and happy, too. Here are five ways to maximize this time, inspired by some of the most successful people around.

1. Pursue a Passion

Would you believe that former U.S. President George W. Bush is an avid painter , that three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep knits for leisure , or that billionaire investor Warren Buffett plays the ukulele in his spare time?

You’re more than just a cog in a machine: You have interests and passions. Cultivating a hobby is a fantastic way to unwind after a long week, whether you’re playing a sport, pursuing photography, or even scrapbooking. But this is about more than unwinding; engaging in side projects and creative hobbies can result in enhanced work performance by way of encouraging creative thinking to solve work-related problems. Bottom line: don’t feel guilty about making time for your hobbies.

Arianna Huffington makes it clear to employees that she doesn’t expect them to answer emails on weekends or while on vacation . Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, spends his Saturdays hiking. On Sundays he focuses on “reflection, feedback, [and] strategy.” This is what allows him to be super-focused come Monday .

As worthwhile as technology is, being connected to your inbox 24/7 prevents you from enjoying a badly needed separation from work, which could eventually lead to burnout. If you feel like you’re answering emails around the clock, check in with yourself and see if you can change your usage habits . If the pressure is external and you think your boss always expects you to be available, check out Muse Career Coach Melody Wilding’s advice for discussing work-life balance with your workaholic boss .

3. Spend Time With Family and Friends

Former President Barack Obama makes the most of his free time with his two daughters Malia and Sasha . Billionaire Mark Cuban may be a shark on TV, but switches to Dad mode at home with his wife and two daughters.

Even if you don’t have kids, you can apply the same principle, which is that you carve out time where you’re focused on your loved ones. Maybe you work too many hours during the week to check in on your relationships: The weekend is the perfect opportunity to meet for a meal or a walk, or schedule a phone call. This’ll help you be less resentful come Monday, because you won’t feel like work comes first seven days a week.

4. Take a Nap

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and inventor Thomas Edison are just two of the many famous people who swear by the “power nap.” In fact, napping at work is actually good for your productivity.

However, not all bosses are on board with it, so you may have to forgo a nap Monday through Friday. Plan on taking one on the weekends, just don’t spend all afternoon in bed. Short power naps of no longer than 20 minutes leave you feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to accomplish your personal to-do list, so you can focus on work come Monday.

5. Volunteer

The super successful find time to give back . Maybe you can’t Monday through Friday, but that’s OK. Sites like volunteermatch.org will let you sort local opportunities for days of the week so you can find one for a Saturday or Sunday. It turns out that acts of altruism have tangible positive effects on the giver. Helping those in need helps you keep things in perspective. Studies have found that people who volunteer in their communities display increased growth and personal well-being.

The next time you decide to spend your weekend watching mindless TV, remember that time can be the stepping stone to the next breakthrough for yourself and your career.
