where do you see yourself in 10 years

By Mike Simpson

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? It’s one of those interview questions that seems so simple on the surface but is actually incredibly hard to answer. After all, no one can predict the future 100 percent accurately, right? So, how are you supposed to come up with an awesome response?

Yes, getting the answer right can be a little tricky. However, by using the correct strategy, it gets much easier. If you want to have a stand-out answer for the interview classic, where do you see yourself in 10 years, here’s what you need to know.

The 10-Year Period vs. the 5-Year Period

Okay, before we dive into how to answer this question, let’s take a second and talk about the highly similar one – “ Where do you see yourself in five years? ” – and how the two compare.

While the two questions have a lot in common, how you answer them isn’t the same. Yes, you’re talking about the future in both cases. But the thing is, 10 years is a lot further away.

Think about it this way; ten years ago, the first Tesla Model S made it into a customer’s hands. The iPad was only two years old, and people were still wondering about the future of touch computing . Siri was also new, launching in late 2011.

Ultimately, a lot of change can happen in five years. But compare it to 10 years, and it seems like nothing.

Over 10 years, most professionals mature and grow a lot in their careers. You can go from entry-level to management in that time frame in many fields. That kind of development just isn’t common in half that time.

That’s part of why this question is such a doozy. You aren’t just thinking about the next step or two in your career; you have to consider the next half-dozen steps. That isn’t easy.

Couple that with the fact that predicting how your field will evolve in that time is hard, and it may seem like a perfect answer to “where do you see yourself in 10 years” doesn’t exist. However, that isn’t the case. By understanding what the hiring manager is trying to learn, it’s far easier to create an excellent response.

Why Does the Hiring Manager Ask This Question?

Since the hiring manager knows that you can’t tell the future, why on earth would they ask you a question like this? Mainly, they want to see if your long-term vision for your career aligns with the company.

In the end, hiring managers usually focus on very specific things when making hiring decisions. While ensuring you have the right hard and soft skills is part of the equation, they also want to assess your potential for longevity. If your long-term career goals don’t mesh with the company, they’ll likely assume you won’t stick around for long. Since retention is critical in their eyes, that makes you a less desirable candidate.

However, if your vision for the future could easily play out while working for them, the opposite is true. They’ll view you as a stronger candidate because your goals align. Essentially, you’ll look like a better investment.

Another point the hiring manager is assessing with this question is your mindset. Often, you can tell a lot about a person’s personality based on how they answer this question. For example, you can determine if a candidate is methodical, reasonable, bold, or ambitious depending on how they respond. That’s a lot of potential information.

In the end, the hiring manager is typically focused on those two points when they ask this question. By focusing on those areas, you can increase your odds of standing out from the crowd.

Common Mistakes When Answering This Question

As with all parts of an interview, it’s possible to make mistakes when answering, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” One of the biggest is discussing a role or goal that has nothing to do with your current career path or what the company offers. In either case, it makes you seem like a poor match to the hiring manager, so it can easily cost you the job.

Similarly, being unrealistic doesn’t work in your favor. For example, if you’re interviewing for an entry-level role after just graduating from college, saying that you’ll be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company isn’t a wise move. Even if it’s technically possible, calling that goal lofty is an understatement, so it can make you seem naïve.

However, undershooting isn’t a wise move either. If your main goal is to move from an entry-level job to the next position up, that can work against you. The hiring manager may worry that you lack any ambition or wonder that you doubt your capabilities. In either case, it could be enough to give them pause.

Saying you want the hiring manager’s job specifically is seldom an intelligent move. By phrasing it that way, your answer comes off as threatening or aggressive. Again, that doesn’t make you seem like a solid choice, so it’s better to avoid that misstep entirely.

Also remember, this is just one question the hiring manager could ask you in your interview! That’s why we created an amazing free cheat sheet that will give you word-for-word answers for some of the toughest interview questions you are going to face in your upcoming interview.

Tips for Answering This Question

While you can’t see the future, that doesn’t mean you can’t come up with a stellar response to “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” If you aren’t sure how to start, here are three helpful tips.

Learn About the Company

First and foremost, you want to find out a bit more about the company before you try to create an answer for this interview question. In the end, you need to discuss a goal that aligns with something the company brings to the table. That could include supporting their mission, advancing into roles they offer, or something similar.

In the end, you won’t know how to tie everything together if you don’t do some research. As a result, this is the best place to start.

Review Your Career Path

After learning a bit about the company, take a deep dive into your career path. Dig into the roles that logically come next and how long it typically takes to land them. That way, you can discuss various positions you’d like to hold during the 10-year period while ensuring your response is realistic.

Mention the Employer Specifically

If you can tie in a goal about supporting or advancing your employer’s position, market share, or anything in that vein, do it. Along with general goal alignment, part of your plan is to provide a company with exceptional value. You’re aiming to help your employer do more, which may be just the thing to set you apart from the crowd.

How to Answer the Interview Question “Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years?”

Alright, now it’s time to dive into what you’re hoping to learn: how to answer the “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” interview question.

So, what does it take to nail this one? Well, it takes a reliable strategy. First, it’s time to get to know our friend, the Tailoring Method . With the Tailoring Method, you can craft answers that are as relevant to the role and hiring manager as possible. And, since creating alignment increases your odds of moving forward in the hiring process and securing a job offer, that’s vital.

Beyond that, you need to discuss a challenging but realistic objective you’d like to obtain, preferably while showcasing how you’ll provide an employer with value. By bringing that all together, you’ll have a far easier time impressing the hiring manager.

Are you ready to make sure that your answer is top-notch? Excellent! Here’s a step-by-step guide and some example answers to make that easier.

Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a great answer means touching on the right bases. By using a systematic approach, you can cover every critical point. Here’s how to tackle the “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” interview question.

1. Learn About the Role and Company

As mentioned above, you need to know quite a bit about the company and job to come up with a relevant answer. Review the job description to learn more about the duties, then compare it to the company’s mission and values. Find places where everything aligns, and use that as a starting point.

2. Outline Your Career Path

After your initial research, it’s time to determine what’s realistic based on your chosen career path. Do a bit of digging to see what positions people work their way toward in 10 years (based on where you’re starting from), giving you a reasonable baseline.

3. Determine How You Can Deliver Value Along the Way

Now that you know where you can get in the next 10 years and how to relate your goals to the company’s mission or values, it’s time to go further. Think about how you can move down that path while bringing an employer exceptional value. Reflect on this company’s (or hiring manager’s) unique needs. That way, you can make this part as relevant as possible.

4. Refine Your Answer to Keep It Concise

Since this question is traditional, you want to keep your response concise. You don’t need to touch on every step in your plan. Instead, aim for a quick overview only, limiting yourself to the equivalent of just a couple of paragraphs.

Example Answers

Alright, so you probably have a solid idea of how to approach answering “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” But sometimes, nothing brings it all together than a few examples. So, here are some sample answers to inspire you, each focusing on a different career level.

Entry-Level Recent Graduate

EXAMPLE ANSWER:

As a recent college graduate, my main goal for the next 10 years is to learn and grow with a company, allowing me to support critical processes as I hone my skills. Along the way, I’m planning to explore emerging technologies that are benefitting the industry. Since your company is planning new implementations, I believe this allows me to provide exceptional value as I gain experience in the field, hopefully putting me on a management track.

Mid-Career Individual Contributor

During my career, I’ve largely focused on honing my skills, ensuring I can provide exceptional value to my employer. However, recently, I’ve had the opportunity to step into a leadership role, spearheading a critical project and overseeing a team. Through that experience, I’ve developed a love for coaching others toward success. As a result, I’m looking to shift from individual contributor to management within the coming years, ensuring I can provide value to companies by supporting the success of not just myself but those around me.

We need to take a legitimate evaluation of where we have succeeded and where we have fizzled. At that point, we can decide how to continue forward. Considering this, here are 10 essential objectives to achieve as you plan for life in the following 10 years.

Marriage and Family Harmony

Keeping up and extending just as reestablishing and mending in this space ought to totally be the main concern in your own objectives. Pinpoint the connections in the direst condition. It may very well be that your marriage is in extreme difficulty. Potentially your relationship with an ex makes incredible agony in your whole family. Maybe it’s compelling correspondence issues with your youngsters. Any place the peril focuses is, the objective is to decide them and devise an arrangement for settling the issues. Make certain to feature where you have prevailing too, and how you may develop those seeds somewhere else. The objective is a family living in harmony and agreement.

Obligation to Improved Physical Health

A decent spot to begin when discussing life objectives is to ensure you really have a daily existence a long time from now. That surely begins with great actual wellbeing. There are no certifications on carrying on with a long life, however, it is feasible to enormously build your chances. Tune in to your primary care physician when he advises you to lose those 25 additional pounds. Make an activity plan that you appreciate and relish. Ensure that a long time from now you are however energetic and fit as you seem to be ok at this point.

Start a Business

While having my fantasy work is something I anticipate, remaining utilized for the remainder of my life isn’t something I imagined myself doing. I would prefer not to burn through the entirety of my energetic years building another person’s fantasies. I need to assemble my own fantasy. I have consistently longed for having a business, ideally in the corrective business. I need to work for myself. I need to utilize similar individuals, who will help me assemble my vision. Organizations require a lot of infusions, as far as time and assets, before they can remain all alone. In this way, beginning a business currently is the best monetary move I can at any point make. I’m as yet youthful, I am constantly on the planet, I have fewer obligations and if there should be an occurrence of a business disappointment, I can generally recover myself. This is presumably the last objective I desire to seek after in my long-term plan since I need to guarantee my life is altogether first before I can begin a business.

Go to my fantasy get-away

There are three places that are at the highest point of my number one objections list. They incorporate Brazil, India, and Egypt. I couldn’t want anything more than to visit Brazil and partake in the festival. I need to be there at the focal point of everything when the roads are lit with brilliant motorcades and everyone is simply singing, moving and having a ball. There are numerous things I might want to find in Brazil, the wonderful seashores, the pink dolphins, Iguazu Falls and in case I’m adequately fortunate, I may take a helicopter ride to have a perspective on the Statue of Christ on top of Corcovado Mountain.

At the point when I consider India, one thing rings a bell the Taj Mahal. Considered one of the marvels of the world, this great castle is made of marbles and valuable stones. I need to be an observer to this famous piece of design that has stood the test of time and keeps on entrancing us right up ’til the present time.

essay how do i see myself in 10 years

Most hiring managers ask questions like, ‘Where do you see yourself in 10 years or 10 years from now?’to better understand your willingness to grow within their organization. Your answer to this question will provide insight as to whether your long-term career goals are a match for the company and, if so, will you be willing to devote the next 10 years of your life to the organization.

If you are confused about your career goals, read our guide on what career coaching is and why you need it .

While planning for the next 10 years of your career can feel overwhelming, this is an important question for organizations to ask their candidates. People who stay with companies long-term are considered better investments and cost effective in terms of hiring when they stay employed longer.

Showing the interviewer that you’re committed to gaining more experience in the position and that you’d like to grow within the company can help set you apart from other candidates . It also demonstrates to hiring managers that it is worth investing in your skills and abilities for the overall good of the organization.

Common Mistakes When Answering This Question

essay how do i see myself in 10 years

As with all parts of an interview, it’s possible to make mistakes when answering, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years or 10 years from now?”. One of the biggest mistakes to make is discussing a role or goal that has nothing to do with your current career path or what the company offers. In either case, it makes you seem like a poor match to the hiring manager, which can easily cost you the job.

Similarly, being unrealistic doesn’t work in your favor. For example, if you’re interviewing for an entry-level role after just graduating from college, saying that you’ll be the CEO of the biggest company isn’t a wise move. Even if it’s technically possible, calling that goal lofty is an understatement, so it can make you seem naïve.

Also, if you want to become a leader but don’t know how to go about it,  then read our guide on mastering 8 leadership styles .

However, undershooting isn’t a wise move either. If your main goal is to move from an entry-level job to the next position up, that can work against you. The hiring manager may worry that you lack ambition or may even tend to doubt your capabilities as far as the company is concerned. In either case, it could be enough reason for them to take a pause on you.

Saying you want the hiring manager’s job specifically is seldom an intelligent move. By phrasing it that way, your answer comes off as threatening or aggressive. Again, that doesn’t make you seem like a solid choice, so avoiding that misstep is better.

essay how do i see myself in 10 years

You should take a few key steps to prepare for this interview question. These steps include:

  •   Research About The Company

Take some time before the interview to research about the company. See if you can determine their long-term goals and the types of skills and talent they value. The more you know about the organization, the better you’ll be able to align your goals with the company’s goals.

  •   Brainstorm Your Goals For The Future

You should also brainstorm your specific professional goals over the next 10 years. For example, are you looking forward to being in a management position ? Do you want any marketing certifications or training under your belt in 10 years? To make it easier, break your goals into one year, five years, and 10 years.

  •   Tie Your Answer In With The Position You’re Applying For

To show interest in growing with the company, ensure your 10-year professional goals correlate with the job. For example, if you’re applying for a position as a marketing assistant , you could say that within 10 years, you hope to be the head of the marketing department.

Also, if you want to impress your employers with your interview, read our guide on 10 best ways to answer why you’re perfect for the job .

  •   Don’t Be Afraid To Tell The Interviewer What You Want

While you certainly want to align your career goals with the position, you should also be honest about your long-term goals. Even if your goals aren’t an exact match for the job, if the hiring manager believes you’re the right candidate, they may customize the role to suit your wants and needs better. For example, if you’re applying for a marketing assistant position and want to transition into a graphic design position eventually, the hiring manager could incorporate time where you can sit in on graphic design meetings and work with a graphic designer for a few hours each month.

  •   Follow Up On Your Answer With A Question.

Asking the interviewer questions shows you are truly interested and excited about the job. After you answer the interview question about your career goals over the next 10 years, consider asking the interviewer what the organization’s short-term and long-term goals are. essay how do i see myself in 10 years

What Do You See Yourself Doing 10 Years From Now?

  • Ph.D., English, University of Pennsylvania
  • M.A., English, University of Pennsylvania
  • B.S., Materials Science & Engineering and Literature, MIT

Many college interviewers will ask applicants about their long-term goals. You don't need to know what you want to do with your life to answer this question, but be sure to be prepared to answer a question about life after college .

"What Do You See Yourself Doing 10 Years from Now?"

This common interview question can come in many flavors: What do you want to do with your life? What are your goals? What is your dream job? What do you want to do with your college degree? What are your future plans?

However your interviewer phrases the question, the goal is similar. The college admissions folks want to see if you have thought about your future. A lot of students don't succeed in college for the simple reason that they don't have a clear sense of why college is important to them and their goals. This interview question is subtly asking you to show how college fits into your long-term planning.

Realize that you definitely do not need to know what you want to be doing 10 years from now. College is a time of exploration and discovery. Many prospective college students have not yet been introduced to the fields that will define their future careers. The majority of students will change majors before they graduate. Many students will have careers that aren't directly connected to their undergraduate majors .

Weak Interview Question Responses

That said, you don't want to evade the question. Answers such as these may be accurate, but they won't impress anybody:

  • "I don't know." True enough, but keep on reading to see a better way to present your uncertainty.
  • "I'm not sure what I'll be doing, but I want to be making lots of money." This answer suggests that you have no academic interests, but you have strong materialistic desires. Such attitudes aren't very attractive to a college that is trying to enroll an interesting and engaged group of students.
  • "I want to be working for a big company." Try to focus more. What type of company? Why? A vague answer isn't going to create a strong impression.
  • "I hope I'll be married with kids." That's fine, but the interviewer isn't really asking about your personal life (in fact, it wouldn't be appropriate for an interviewer to ask about your future plans for family and marriage). Keep focused on career goals that are connected to your college education.

Strong Interview Question Answers

If asked about your future goals , be honest but also answer in a way that shows you have actually thought about the relationship between college and your future. Here are a couple ways to approach the question:

  • "I want to major in aeronautical engineering and work for NASA." If you know what you want to do, an interview question about your future is easy to answer. However, be sure to elaborate and explain why you want to pursue a certain career path. What got you interested in the field? What do you hope to accomplish in this career?
  • "I don't know what I will be doing, but I know I want to help people with their problems. In college, I'm interested in taking classes in sociology and psychology to learn what some of the options are." An answer such as this shows your uncertainty, but it shows that you know yourself, you've thought about the future, and you are eager to explore new fields of study.

Again, the interviewer is not expecting you to know what you will be doing in 10 years. If you can see yourself in five different careers, say so. You will have successfully answered this question if you do more than shrug your shoulders or evade the question. Show that you are excited about the future and that college plays a role in it.

A Final Word About College Interviews

To have confidence when you walk into your interview, be sure you prepare for the most common interview questions , and be careful to avoid common interview mistakes .

Keep in mind that college interviews are typically friendly events and that your interviewer wants to get to know you, not stump you or make you feel stupid. The interview is a two-way discussion, and you should use it to learn more about the college just as your interviewer is using it to learn more about you. Enter the interview room ready to have a friendly and thoughtful conversation. You'll be doing yourself a disservice if you view the interview as an adversarial encounter.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

"Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" Whether it's for a secondary prompt or on the interview trail, you’ll often be asked this question in some variation, and your response can help portray you as a focused, ambitious individual. There are many ways to go about tackling this question, but it is important to consider the following elements to help you frame your response:

  • Events or people who inspire you and pave the path for you
  • Tangible opportunities that you can utilize to achieve your aspirations
  • The steps that must be taken to make your dreams a reality

Let's use an example to help us out here: imagine your primary interest was in global health and outreach, inspired by Paul Farmer and his creation of Partners in Health. You can utilize the missions of his organization to consider how your aspirations in this field may be similar or different. Then, you can delve into what your own goals are, ranging from providing affordable healthcare screening to underserved communities to expanding medical access to rural neighborhoods. Through the example of Partners in Health, you are able to draw inspiration from existing initiatives, as well as showcase that you have done your research in what is already present in this area. From this stepping point, you can then discuss what you have already accomplished that is related to this topic, whether it is volunteering in your local community or running nonprofit organizations, or discuss how you hope to enhance these existing structures. After all, the focus of the essay needs to be about you, what you have done, and what you aspire to do.

Next, you must consider how to make your goals tangible. Let’s see this in action with some more examples. Rather than stating that you want to work on healthcare policy for underserved communities, note specific roles that would help you fulfill your goals, such as becoming the Director of Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Instead of stating that you want to do cancer research, draw on your prior experiences in the lab to note some other questions you have and how you might go about solving them. Being specific allows your application reviewers to concretely understand who you are and what you hope to achieve. In that vein, it is important to map out what steps you want to take to get you to your goals. For instance, are you planning on additional schooling?  Would another degree, such as a MBA, MPH, MPP, or PhD help you achieve your goals?  Discussing these pathways is appropriate during your essay, and if the program offers joint degrees, it is worth asking on interview day about these experiences.

It is also worth thinking about what you plan to do in the years between your clinical training and your ultimate goals. If you are interested in research, would you continue your research at large tertiary institutions? If so, this kind of path may fit applying to certain medical schools better than others.  If you were interested in community medicine, which grants might you be interested in applying for and which organizations would you be interested in being involved in?  What is your experience in this realm?  These are just some of the many questions to consider and then delve into through writing.

Lastly, no matter what your goals are, always take the time to focus on clinical medicine as well.  During several of my medical school interviews, interviewers also wanted to see that I was aware that medicine would be an engrossing, time-consuming endeavor for many years of training. This is a commitment you should vocalize.

When you answer where you see yourself in 10 years, you are giving insight into who you are as an applicant and who you might be as a future doctor. Consider your lived experiences, unique identity, and aspirations carefully, and you'll be well on your way to stand out as a well-prepared, focused applicant (both on paper and on interview day)!

How to Write About Yourself in a College Essay | Examples

Published on September 21, 2021 by Kirsten Courault . Revised on May 31, 2023.

An insightful college admissions essay requires deep self-reflection, authenticity, and a balance between confidence and vulnerability. Your essay shouldn’t just be a resume of your experiences; colleges are looking for a story that demonstrates your most important values and qualities.

To write about your achievements and qualities without sounding arrogant, use specific stories to illustrate them. You can also write about challenges you’ve faced or mistakes you’ve made to show vulnerability and personal growth.

Table of contents

Start with self-reflection, how to write about challenges and mistakes, how to write about your achievements and qualities, how to write about a cliché experience, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about college application essays.

Before you start writing, spend some time reflecting to identify your values and qualities. You should do a comprehensive brainstorming session, but here are a few questions to get you started:

  • What are three words your friends or family would use to describe you, and why would they choose them?
  • Whom do you admire most and why?
  • What are the top five things you are thankful for?
  • What has inspired your hobbies or future goals?
  • What are you most proud of? Ashamed of?

As you self-reflect, consider how your values and goals reflect your prospective university’s program and culture, and brainstorm stories that demonstrate the fit between the two.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

Writing about difficult experiences can be an effective way to show authenticity and create an emotional connection to the reader, but choose carefully which details to share, and aim to demonstrate how the experience helped you learn and grow.

Be vulnerable

It’s not necessary to have a tragic story or a huge confession. But you should openly share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to evoke an emotional response from the reader. Even a cliché or mundane topic can be made interesting with honest reflection. This honesty is a preface to self-reflection and insight in the essay’s conclusion.

Don’t overshare

With difficult topics, you shouldn’t focus too much on negative aspects. Instead, use your challenging circumstances as a brief introduction to how you responded positively.

Share what you have learned

It’s okay to include your failure or mistakes in your essay if you include a lesson learned. After telling a descriptive, honest story, you should explain what you learned and how you applied it to your life.

While it’s good to sell your strengths, you also don’t want to come across as arrogant. Instead of just stating your extracurricular activities, achievements, or personal qualities, aim to discreetly incorporate them into your story.

Brag indirectly

Mention your extracurricular activities or awards in passing, not outright, to avoid sounding like you’re bragging from a resume.

Use stories to prove your qualities

Even if you don’t have any impressive academic achievements or extracurriculars, you can still demonstrate your academic or personal character. But you should use personal examples to provide proof. In other words, show evidence of your character instead of just telling.

Many high school students write about common topics such as sports, volunteer work, or their family. Your essay topic doesn’t have to be groundbreaking, but do try to include unexpected personal details and your authentic voice to make your essay stand out .

To find an original angle, try these techniques:

  • Focus on a specific moment, and describe the scene using your five senses.
  • Mention objects that have special significance to you.
  • Instead of following a common story arc, include a surprising twist or insight.

Your unique voice can shed new perspective on a common human experience while also revealing your personality. When read out loud, the essay should sound like you are talking.

First, spend time reflecting on your core values and character . You can start with these questions:

However, you should do a comprehensive brainstorming session to fully understand your values. Also consider how your values and goals match your prospective university’s program and culture. Then, brainstorm stories that illustrate the fit between the two.

When writing about yourself , including difficult experiences or failures can be a great way to show vulnerability and authenticity, but be careful not to overshare, and focus on showing how you matured from the experience.

Through specific stories, you can weave your achievements and qualities into your essay so that it doesn’t seem like you’re bragging from a resume.

Include specific, personal details and use your authentic voice to shed a new perspective on a common human experience.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? How will your education help you get there? by Savannah - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

Savannah Reimer

In 10 years from now I see myself as a very successful person excelling in my chosen career. It is a clear choice for me to pursue veterinary medicine, I have always had a passion for helping animals. I have taken a major opportunity this year by shadowing an animal behavioral program at Canisius College. I accompanied the class on their research trip to Marineland in Canada on November 6th. This was extremely significant because it helped me grasp if a career involving animals was something I wanted to do. I am extremely happy that I agreed to go because it was an amazing experience. My education will greatly assist me in my journey. During my past few years of high school I have been very successful. I am always pushing myself to be on honor roll and high honor roll and meet my goals. My first quarter of 12th grade I have received an average of 98.46%. These accomplishments have greatly benefitted me in such that I was accepted for several universities. Such as Niagara County Community College, Niagara University, Canisius College, and Medaille College. I plan to go to Niagara University in the fall and pursue veterinary medicine. This challenging program will help me to become a veterinarian. Therefore in 10 years, I see myself being the best I can be. Earning a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine and eventually moving to Alaska and starting my own animal clinic.

The Times asked 18 high school seniors about their plans, and only one said he was undecided about his future. Others said they planned or aspired to pursue careers in psychology, medicine, photography and other fields. How about you? What are your goals? When you look into the future, where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

The Times Magazine’s interactive feature “High-School Seniors Predict Their Future” includes photographs of the 18 students who were interviewed, all from Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, along with audio clips of them talking about their goals. One student, Nathan Rebelo, age 17, said this:

When I get older I want to be an architect. I really, like, just designing homes, and my ultimate goal in life is just to be driving somewhere downtown and just be, like — like, show my kids or my family — just be, like: ‘I designed that building, that is me right there. I have my own stamp on life.’ Next year I’m hoping to go to U.S.C., so my fingers are crossed to get accepted. If I don’t get into U.S.C., I’m kind of just hoping for a school out of San Diego – really kind of just want to spread my wings, kind of. I don’t want to say I want to get away from my family, but I really just want to get on my own and discover who I am and be able to kind of be who I want to be without worrying about who’s going to say this or, just, the judgment of high school.

Students: Tell us about your personal goals. When you look 10 years ahead, where do you see yourself? What do you want to be doing with your career and life, and why? What are your dreams and aspirations in addition to specific goals? If you’re undecided, why do you think that is?

I see myself going to college and getting my degree and master and association to become a peditrician because thats what i wanted to be every since i was in 3rd grade.

i will be a active business women, i want everybody admire and respect me. Addition, i want to have a happy family. in brief, I see myself succeed in career and family. Of course, I have to study hard because i don’t want to see my bad future.

I see myself in 10 years becoming one of the best money managers in the nation. I could do it all: basic accounting, taxes, and even help out with investment ideas. With CPA accreditation in all 50 states, I help out actors, athletes, team owners, sports leagues, studios, small businesses, big businesses, banks, local governments, state governments, the Federal government if they ask, the FBI to fight white-collar crime, regular people, and churches, to which my services are free. We go to church every Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. My, my lovely bride, and our friendly but well behaved children. We have a beautiful house in a beautiful part of the country. We have a lot of things but our eyes are focused on Jesus. I love her and show it often. I unangerly and unapologetically reprove my kids when they do wrong. People all over the nation will recognize me as a Christian, and I get some grief for it but I also get a lot of respect for my beliefs. I am a deacon in my church and responsible for many of the things the church has. On the church board of directors, I manage the church’s money and prepare the financial report each month. We go on trips to other nations partially as tourist but mostly to meet missionary on the field and assist them with money and labor. I still love fishing and the great outdoors and I do with my kids that which my father had done with me so long ago. I even coach my children’s soccer team, like my dad did. Despite having much, I don’t forget my high school, my town, my family, my youth, my old church, and my God. This is my life in 10 years.

In ten years I believe I will be teaching high school. I think I will be making medium wage and living in a small community. I think that I will be coaching football somewhere as well. I hope to be able to eat lots of fast food and take lots of vacations. And by then I will be able to have my own secret office finally.

i see myself in debt wishing my life was a little bit better because i’m regretting all my past life decisions.

In ten years I see myself as either working as a psycholgoist or anthropologist, with either a masters or doctorate in both. I would prefer to be working in Europe though a job anywhere in the world will suffice.

I don’t set objectives such as these. I make decisions on a day-to-day basis unless it is absolutely necessary that I make long-term ones. Life is like a box of chocolates-you never know which one you are going to get. I don’t want to be disappointed by not ending up with the one I wanted, but to enjoy the ones that are thrown my way.

I see my being in collage or coming out of collage in ten years. Also i want to be a marine biologoist. And hopefully i will be like that in ten years or maybe even less.

I see my self in ten years in Med school studing to be a doctor. So I can help others fight sickness and diseases.

:)

In ten years, I see myself as a World History Professor for Harvard University.

In ten years I imagine myself getting out of UVA College and becoming a teacher!

In ten years I see myself getting out of college hopfuly having a house, and a part time job. I see myself with my with my best friend Kayla Brooke. We will be moving to California married to Josh and Tyler. I hope to have a good job being a nurse or teacher.

i see myself getting out of college and looking for a job and getting together with family.

Everybody has an idea of the type of person they’d like to be and what they will have liked to accomplished within a span of the next ten years. No one can predict the future but I do have an idea of what I would like to do in the years coming up. In a long term sense I would like to have gotten accepted into a fairly prestigious college and have either graduated either from law school or a business program from a one of the top fifteen schools of either programs. I also would like to be in a serious relationship by that point because I will be turning twenty-six and idealy i wold like to be married and gaving kids before I hit thirty. I also would have liked to help run charity events and funraisers for causes like Cancer, Alzheimers, HIV/AIDS , etc. In more cliche matters I would have liked to make a difference in someone’s life. I hope that i am still close with many of the friends that I am close to now. I hope that by that point I have few regrets, and have grown both as a person in society and as an individual. I hope that I can learnt to handle stress in a better way as well as hopefully I have a job that i love and am successful in. These are only hopes and a short list of my dreams and wishes in a more broad aspect but if I’ve accomplished this and my family is healthy and safe I couldn’t really ask for much more.

I see myself in 10 years with a college degree and a job as a Journalist or Dancer. I want to go to a great college and graduate with my masters etc. I want to also start a family when I’m done with college. I also want to be living in a house. I hope to achieve all goals to getting to where I want to be in life.

Thinking too much about the future can be traumatizing though we cannot live without focus. We always evaluate our previous achievement and extrapolate them into the future world. Certainly, thinking about the future is unsuccessful and incomplete with various contradictory questions. Though there are various challenges on a daily basis, certainly we cannot stop to think and plan on our future progress. Failing to plan directly translates to planning to fail. Where do I see myself in ten years, is a typical and relevant question for any teenagers who are aspiring for a decent life. Though it was difficult to think about the future, however, living in hopes that tomorrow will be better today is imperative. Wishful thinking always prospers in life. Ten years can easily move faster when there are no organized plans for the period. However, the same decades can be a challenge for busy minds. Conversing about the present is much easier because there are ready facts and evidence to back the claims. However, the much we can do with ten years from today is setting goals and anticipating the outcome.  Ten years from now, I would have graduated and perfected my resume to land me to my desired career.

Ten years from now is adequately enough time to enable me to realize my dream home. I have desired to establish my palatial residential home, with a beautiful backyard. Having learned the value of trees in human health, I would carefully decorate my home with sweet-scented trees and flowers. Meanwhile, a small vegetable garden would not miss within the compound. Fruits trees like mangoes, oranges, and avocados would form a nice hut in the compound to provide shade for my family. The shade will be incomplete without the contribution of birds singing their loud melodious songs right furthest end of the trees. My puppy will be there waiting to collect any fallen fruits from the trees and hand them over to my garden boy. I would not hesitate to spend my weekend under these natural shade with my family. Though raising my kids will be longer than ten years. However, I am optimistic about my first born celebrating her third day towards the end of my tenth-year dream. I hopefully dream of providing steadfast love, educational requirements, and security to them.

My vision in ten years from today will be complete with securing a decent job. I have not aspired to start my firm. Though my financial obligation would be met through my salary, I always respect and value how our government remunerates and appreciate professionals. Most importantly, I simply need to finish my course and get admitted into the employment system as a star. Working ten hours in a day is often my dream. It coincides with my ten-year dream. The weekends will be devoted for exclusive family bonding and exposure. I believe, in ten years, my stress of meeting different demands shall have reduced significantly. I will have more time to socialize and go out with my family and friends. I will not regret spending much of my time watching various TV channels and taking naps. Sincerely, I will be compensating myself for having worked tirelessly hard to meet my desires and dreams. I am therefore committed today to realize the better outcome of my ten-year dream. I am time conscious now and struggling to spend each day wisely to better results. Now I depend on my parents for upkeep in college. Devote almost sixteen hours a day to learn and submit my assignments. I am driven by determination and passion for dream.

  • Show Your Ambition: Employers seek ambitious and motivated candidates to grow within the company. Show your ambition by sharing your long-term career goals and how they align with the company’s mission and values.

Avoid Common Mistakes When Discussing Your 5-Year Vision

When answering the question, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” it’s important to avoid common mistakes that could send red flags to the hiring manager and hinder your chances of landing your dream job. Here are some tips on how to avoid these mistakes:

  • Don’t be too vague: Avoid giving generic or unclear answers that don’t align with your career aspirations. For example, saying that you see yourself “growing with the company” may not demonstrate enough ambition or a clear plan for your long-term career goals.
  • Don’t be too unrealistic: While showcasing your ambition and career growth aspirations is important, keeping them realistic is equally important. Saying that you want to be the company’s CEO within five years while starting at an entry-level position may come across as unrealistic.
  • Don’t be too short-sighted: Employers are looking for candidates with a long-term vision for their career growth, not just short-term goals. Ensure your answer includes how you plan to develop your skills and progress in your career beyond the five-year mark.
  • Don’t be too focused on the specific position: While showing enthusiasm for the role you’re interviewing for is excellent, showcasing your broader career goals and aspirations is vital. Don’t limit yourself to just one specific position within the company.
  • Don’t give the same example answer as everyone else: Employers have repeatedly heard the same “example answers” to this common job interview question. It’s important to stand out by providing a unique and personalized response that showcases your strengths and aspirations.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can correctly answer the question “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” and increase your chances of receiving a job offer. It’s a great way to show your ambition and commitment to long-term career growth while demonstrating that you are a good fit for the company.

My ability to communicate effectively and work well with others helped us meet our deadlines and deliver a high-quality product.
