I always imagine how my future house will be. A home is a place surrounded by the people one loves. A house is not made beautiful by its furniture or decor, but by the people that live inside it. My dream house should be a house that I can share with my family when I grow old. I always dream of a wooden house in the hilly areas. My dream house should be the one facing a small river. Through the windows, I could see the sun setting and disappearing into the mountains. My dream house would have a small garden where I will grow my own vegetables and fruits.

The house that I fancy would be considerably big with four rooms and a spacious common area. My dream house should be comfortable for my parents, grandparents and siblings. The house should be equipped with all the modern amenities. It should have a big TV with a home theatre system and a Playstation attached to it. The walls of the house will have light colours that will make it appear bright. There will be sufficient light bulbs and lamps in every room. I also dream of a chandelier in the guest room and a big sofa where everyone will sit and enjoy watching TV together. My grandparents love reading. I wish that my dream house will have a reading space with lots of books.

I have a 3-year old pet dog called Tiger. I also want to have a small yet cosy space in my house for Tiger where he can sleep and relax when he grows old. The house will have beautiful interiors and will have all the facilities like a modern kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, ACs, etc. My dream home should be the one where we all can live happily and comfortably.

In my garage, I want to have enough room for my car and my two-wheeler. I would also like to do my laundry in the garage, as the garage offers the ideal space one needs to do their laundry.

Coming to the main rooms, I want a study, where my books for study, books for reading in my free time, CDs of my movie collection would be kept. There must be a cozy corner in that room, where there will be a small couch by the window, where I can relax and spend my own sweet time.

The bedroom will be sweet and, with a queen-size bed and a lot of pillows, I have no such specifications about it. Just an addition to my bedroom would be a tiny bed for my dogs.

The house is where we stay with our loved ones. A good house is one that makes the person feel at ease. It is a place where we can seek shelter from rain, heat, and storms, among other things. Everyone has their own preferences for the type of home they prefer to live in.

Location Of My Dream House

I want to live in the mountains of Switzerland. I want to live in a picturesque village named Grindewald where Alps mountain is located. I want to live in a small community where everyone knows each other, and people are very kind and helpful.

I want to raise cows on the hillsides. Every morning, I want to wake up to the melodious tinkle of a cowbell around my ears. When I walk out of my room, I want to stand on the lawn of the backyard and breathe in the fresh air. I want a warm and cosy house of comfort and peace.

The beautiful glacier can be seen from my terris's window. Why do I want this type of house? Because I enjoy seeing the sunrise and sunset, as well as the people working at their workplace. The breeze from the trees planted by the people of the village behind my dream house will be refreshing every day. It would be fantastic. I chose to build my home near the village and river so that I can feel refreshed and grateful to be surrounded by nature. In my ideal home, I also want to plant my own fruits and vegetables.

How My Dream House Would Look

First and foremost, my house would be located in the woods, away from everyone else. I'd also live in a contemporary-looking log cabin. Living in a log cabin has always been a dream of mine. I also want to live in a contemporary home, so combining the two would be ideal for me.

My dream home will be large and spacious. I want my house to be built on a mountain with as many green materials as possible to help protect the environment. I also want my house to be located away from the hustle and bustle of a big city, but not too far from civilization. This house style, which I believe suits my personality, is more antique and sophisticated, with a touch of simplicity and aesthetic. The house will have beautiful interiors and all of the amenities, such as a kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, and a bonfire place.

My backyard would be open and have a view of the mountain and valleys. There would be a bonfire in the centre surrounded by chairs, and a barbeque place. I want a swimming pool and a jacuzzi in my backyard.

My room would be the biggest one out of the 5 rooms I want in my home. It would have black coloured walls and blue curtains. There would be a small bed for my dog in the corner of my room. I want to have a common room where everyone can sit and watch TV, spend some quality time with the family and have a huge wooden dining table in the corner of the room.

Doing topic research before writing an essay is very important. To write a dream house essay in English, you must first visualize the entire house in your mind. Then it would help if you decided what details and how many details you want to include in your dream house essay. These will include the words or phrases that you want to include.

Planning before writing not only saves time but helps you in organizing your ideas. You will have to spend some time in developing a basic outline of your essay. It will help you in improving the flow of your writing and will help the reader in visualizing your dream house.

As discussed before, having a writing plan proves to help bring your thoughts on a piece of paper. An outline of my dream house essay will be like a blueprint that will serve as a guide when you sit down to write the actual essay.

An example of the essay outline that describes your house can be:

  • Introduction
  • Body Paragraph 1: Details about the exterior of the house
  • Body Paragraph 2: Details about the interior of the house

You should feel free to include as many details or points as you wish or deem appropriate. With that said, make sure the flow is logical and the essay segues smoothly from the introduction to the body and then to the concluding part.

Your dream house essay should engage the readers. It can be only achieved when the body paragraphs are cohesive, linked, and are in a flow. It is unnecessary to make two separate paragraphs to communicate similar ideas; hence, they should be grouped together. Topic sentences should be used along with content to support it. All the paragraphs should have a similar length. The use of transition words (such as ‘furthermore’, ‘however’, and ‘besides’) will improve the connection and flow between paragraphs. Do not use intricate sentence structure that is difficult to read and understand. Simple sentences are easier to understand and will help in visualizing the house. The dream house essay example written at the end will provide you with a better idea of how paragraphs are written.

Your essay should include all of the details regarding the house. It would be best if you start by putting a “my dream house paragraph” at the start, which will give the reader a basic idea or introduction. It can be followed by a paragraph of what living in a dream house would be like for you. Then you can continue by explaining the exterior, interior, and particular areas or features of the house which make the house a “dream house” for you. You can mention the tiniest details as it helps the reader in visualizing better. You can also imagine yourself living in that house and then jot down different activities that you might be carrying out, such as hosting parties and having movie nights.

The conclusion of the essay will give a summary of all the points you have mentioned in your essay “the house of my dream”. It will wrap up your essay in a neat manner. When concluding your essay, please do not restate the idea or the statement that you want to have a dream house as it will be redundant. The conclusion is not supposed to bring any new ideas as they should only be explained in the body paragraphs.

Once you are done writing the essay, its time to sit back and revise it carefully. The revision process lets you look at the essay from a fresh perspective. You can be critical while reading it. It is the rethinking phase in which you reconsider the details, add something in case anything was missed, and reorganize the paragraphs. If you have missed details about the exciting floor tiling, while describing your dream house, now is the time to add those.

The golden rule of writing is not relying on the first draft of an essay about a dream house or of any essay. If you are not considering this, then you are risking more than just having confused readers. What if you have made spelling mistakes or errors in the sentence structure. It might derail the reader and can hinder the visualization process of your dream house. Proofreading can help you maintain quality and can help you in recognizing areas that could have been written and explained better.

To help with the visualization process, pictures that resemble your dream house can be added. It will also ensure the attentiveness of the reader as images are better at grabbing attention. Also, the human brain can process images much faster than words. Check out the example in the dream house college assignment written below.

essay about my dream house

Since childhood, I have been dreaming of the perfect house that will be a place of happiness, inspiration, and peace. The idea of having a house in a noisy city is something I have always dreaded. My dream house will be in the suburbs, outside the city. I would be very excited is there is a lake nearby as I adore nature. Though the house will be far from the city, that does not mean that I will live in isolation. Everything will be a walking distance, whether it is a supermarket or a car wash.

The house of my dreams will have a simple but modern design that would be appealing to the eyes. I would like to have a huge lawn where I can grow my vegetables and fruits. The parking would be spacious enough for several cars. I will place modern furniture on the front porch, where we can relax and enjoy the view. The backyard will have enough space to hold a party and entertain at least fifty people. I have a huge family, and we are always hosting parties. I also want a pool in the backyard so that I can host pool parties.

The house will have plenty of large glass windows that will make the house bright and spacious. I will plan each detail of the interior of my house. I want it to be very modern and minimalistic. Bulky furniture, dark wallpapers, and bohemian décor is something that I do not want in my house.

Unnecessary furniture clutters the house and makes me claustrophobic. The hall and large living room should have enough space so that people can move around quickly. I want to have comfortable sofas and soft furry carpet on the floor. The kitchen should be large and neat, as I am fond of cooking and baking. It will be equipped with all the latest appliances to make the whole baking process more comfortable. I would love to cook for my family on weekends. We can all sit on the large wooden dining table and enjoy the scrumptious meal.

The bedrooms will have attached bathrooms. I want a rain shower and a bathtub in every bathroom in my house. The bedrooms will have king-size, cozy beds with linen sheets. Just like the house, I want the color of the beddings to be light. Unlike most of the houses, I would like to have a small home theatre in my bedroom. I am not a bookworm so I might turn the room that was meant to be a library in a proper movie theatre so that I can host movie nights.

My dream house will be warm and welcoming. I want it to be my happy place, away from all the hustle and bustle. It will fulfill my desire of living near nature. It would be a perfect place for me to relax after a tough day at work. I wish that one day I can build this house and live in it.

My Dream Home: Personal View

Most people need a place where they can relax, feel safe and comfortable. A place, where they want to go after a hard day at work or an intense day with their friends. Most people call such place home. Although it is not easy to build or make a house or an apartment a good place to live in, I want my dream house to be a great place with both simple and exquisite features.

To begin with, my dream home must have both nice interior and exterior. The exterior has to contain a swimming pool and a huge lawn. I can swim in the swimming pool in summer and call my friends to come over and have a picnic on the lawn.

Besides, the house itself has to be big in size with a garage where I can keep my car. It should contain two floors including an attic. I also want it to have a spacious porch and huge French windows. The attic is important because I want to keep my telescope there and watch the Moon and stars from it. This little observatory will inspire me to dream about galaxies far away before I would go to sleep.

Moreover, the ground floor should have a kitchen, a living room, a dining room, a gym, and a bathroom. The kitchen must contain all the cooking appliances and be a good place to stay, even if you do not cook anything. A living room has to have squishy furniture, a big bookcase with lots of books in it, a fireplace, and a huge TV. I cannot help imagining myself sitting in this room in winter next to the fireplace and reading a captivating novel or watching an atmospheric movie. The dining room is supposed to be bright with a light-colored wall, big windows, and many paintings of nature on the walls. The gym is an essential part as well. There I can work out whenever I want to keep fit. A bathroom would feature a bathtub and a shower cabin – nothing unusual.

In addition, the first floor will have a few large bedrooms, a trophy room, and a bathroom. The bedroom has to contain a large, comfortable bed, a sleeping table with a lamp on it, in case I would want to read something at night, and a soft Persian carpet on the floor. It should have a TV opposite the bed, and a balcony. It would be so nice to wake up, go to the balcony and breathe some fresh air in the morning. A trophy room would be the most special room. There I would keep all my sentimental things starting from family photos and ending with sports awards. Things like postcards from my friends or some of my birthday presents will be kept in that room. It would be nice to come to that room and think of all the pleasant moments that happened to me. I can also bring my friends so I can share those moments with them as well.

Of course, I have not forgotten about the basement where the laundry room and the stock room would be located. The stock room would be huge and contain food supplies. The things that I do not need at that moment, but still want to keep would also be there.

To conclude, I would like to state that it does not really matter what your house look like unless it feels like home.

My dream house is big and colorful, with lots of rooms for playing. It has a huge garden where I can run and play hide-and-seek. Inside, there are soft carpets that feel like grass under my feet. The walls have pictures of animals and fairy tale castles. My bedroom has a bed shaped like a race car, and I can see the stars through a window on the roof. The kitchen always smells like chocolate cookies, and there’s a special cupboard just for my toys. It’s a happy place where my family and I laugh, have fun, and make memories together.

A dream house is a place where you feel happiest, safest, and most comfortable. Imagine a cozy home that reflects all your favorite things. It could be a tall building in a busy city or a quiet cottage in the countryside. The outside might be painted in bright colors with a beautiful garden filled with flowers and trees where you can play or relax. Inside, each room would be just the right size for you and filled with soft furniture that invites you to sit down and read or play games. Your bedroom would be your special space, with a comfy bed and a window that lets in the morning sun. The kitchen would always smell like delicious food, and the living room would have a big TV for watching movies and enough space for your friends and family to gather. My Dream House

house of your dreams essay

What Is the House of Your Dream?

My dream house is a place where I’ll find comfort and peace. What is the house of your dream? Write an essay, will you?

Exam in Mind Level B1/B2

Hi there! I’m Veronika . Are there people who have never dreamed of the future? I doubt it. So, I often think about it. One of the dreams for the future concerns the perfect house, and I want to share what my dream house is.

If money weren’t a problem, I would like to live in my own house surrounded by a light pine wood and a lake nearby.

The house would be large, two floors in a black modern style, with large panoramic windows, especially on the first floor, which would overlook a spacious backyard with pine trees, a gazebo, a pool, and a big outdoor hanging chair under the house roof. Within the house, the interior will also be in a modern style, mostly dark in color and with small accents of wood and greenery.

My dream house house will have a spacious studio room on the first floor, which will include a living room with a dining room and a fitted kitchen, as well as a separate small bathroom and a storeroom. There will also be a direct exit to the garage, both from within and from the outside on two sides. On the second floor, I would like to have a spacious, stylish bedroom with a large bed and a built-in wardrobe, along with panoramic windows providing access to a spacious balcony where, during the rain, one could enjoy a cup of coffee and the atmosphere. I would also like to have two guest bedrooms on the second floor, as well as my own office and a dark bathroom with a bathtub and a power shower.

I don’t like neighbors because I love being alone and feel safer that way, so I would prefer them to be about a kilometer from my house.

It would be wonderful to have such a house, so I will do everything to live in my dream house in the future.

  • What It Tells Us

If you've ever had a dream about someone unexpected, such as an ex, co-worker, or crush, you might wonder why they might appear in your dreams. While dreams are often centered on daytime thoughts and concerns, they can also reflect unconscious thoughts or feelings about others. In other cases, dreams symbolically represent something else entirely.

Understanding what dreaming about another person means can provide insight into things you may be thinking or worrying about, potentially without even realizing it. Read on to start to decode your dreams and what they might say about you.

Dreaming About Someone Can Reveal Unconscious Feelings

The psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud played a significant role in connecting dream interpretation to the field of psychology. Freud suggested that dreams are one way to access the unconscious mind, which he described as a vast reservoir of thoughts, feelings, and desires hidden from conscious awareness.

Even though the contents of the unconscious are not directly accessible, Freud still believed that these thoughts, memories, and desires could still have an influence on behavior. Freud also believed the unconscious could be explored through processes such as dream analysis , free association , hypnosis, Freudian slips , and psychoanalysis.

Freud believed that bringing unconscious information to light could help alleviate psychological distress. If dreaming about someone has left you upset, distressed, or just plain baffled, exploring your dream's meaning may help you make sense of what it might mean.

Breaking Down Your Dreams of Someone Else

According to Jesse Lyon, a licensed mental health counselor and owner of Lyon Counseling in Casselberry, Florida, before we can understand what it means to dream about someone, it is essential to first understand that dreams communicate information on two different levels. These levels are known as the manifest content and the latent content.

Sigmund Freud famously described these two aspects of dreams in his seminal book " The Interpretation of Dreams ." Freud suggested that dreams were highly symbolic and contained literal meanings (the manifest content) and symbolic meanings (the latent content).

Manifest Content of Dreams

The manifest content of a dream refers to the actual events and images that take place within the dream. This is the imagery and storyline that you remember upon waking. If you dream about someone, the manifest content would be the details about that individual, their appearance, the events that take place, and the interactions you have within the dream.

"Manifest content is very literal and will communicate with you directly about a problem you have or situation you experienced," Lyon explains. "For example, you might dream about getting into an argument with your romantic partner because you are currently experiencing conflict in your relationship ; this is pretty straightforward dream processing."

Another example might be having a dream about attending a concert with a close friend you haven’t seen in a long time. The manifest content would be the events, your friend's words and reactions, and the other sensory and perceptual elements you experience as a dreamer.

The manifest content may not, however, necessarily reflect the underlying meaning of the dream. It is through analyzing the latent content—or the symbolic meaning—that you might get a better idea of what your dream might mean.

Latent Content of Dreams

The latent content of a dream, Lyon notes, is much more personal and emotional. This involves the subconscious meaning of the dream, or what dream interpreters would say is the hidden meaning behind your dream. In the previous example of arguing with a partner, Lyon explains, it might mean that the person is struggling with feeling unworthy of their partner’s love.

Dreaming about a friend you haven't seen in years might symbolically represent a subconscious yearning for reconnection or a desire to find closure for unresolved feelings . Or it might indicate a broader desire for more social connection and companionship in general.

Examples of Dream Symbolism

"If you ever see someone show up in your dreams, ask yourself: 'What does this person symbolize to me?'" Lyon suggests. If it's your:

  • Boss : It might represent struggles with authority.
  • Mother : You might be dealing with struggles related to femininity and self-nurturance.
  • High-school teacher : You might be coping with feeling judged or graded.

If You Dream About Romance and Relationships

What does it mean if you dream about your crush or about dating someone? Dreaming about a crush might be about the obvious meaning—you are interested in being with them romantically. However, Lyon notes, that isn't necessarily the whole story.

Because dreams have manifest (or literal) content and latent (or more symbolic) meanings, it is essential to consider both. The manifest content of your dreams might reveal deeper, subconscious meanings that are worth exploring, particularly if you have a romantic dream about someone who isn’t necessarily a potential romantic partner (such as one of a friend or boss).

" Romantic involvement is all about connection," Lyon explains. "So, if you are on a date, or even having sex with someone you would not expect, that person symbolizes an area of your life that you need to connect with more deeply."

Meaning Behind Romantic Dreams About Someone

According to Lyon, these dreams might be more about:

  • Control over your own life : "If you dream about having sex with your boss, you may not actually want to have sex with them, but you definitely need to consider how you connect with your own authority and assertiveness over your life's direction."
  • Letting go of emotional baggage : "If you dream about having sex with your ex, you may not actually want to get back with them, but you should definitely consider what unresolved baggage from your past that you need to connect with and let go."
  • Personal growth : "If you dream about having sex with your friend, think about what are the most important characteristics of your friend. Chances are your mind is trying to teach you how to grow as a person and connect with those admirable personality traits ."

What Dreaming About Someone Can Tell Us

Dreams can provide insights into our subconscious thoughts, feelings, desires, and fears. They can also offer a perspective that can help deepen your relationships in ways that support connection and mental well-being.

Lyon notes it is important to remember that all the roles we play in life act as characters that live inside our minds. The characters we play (such as parent, partner, friend, or colleague) make up the complete picture of who we are as individuals.

Whenever we are visited by someone in our dreams, we need to consider the literal meaning, but then go deeper to think about how that person in our dreams is teaching us to connect with a new character that lives inside us.

"By learning to understand and accept all of the different characters that live inside of us, we become more complete as a person and can then love others with greater empathy and understanding," Lyon says.

Dream Interpretation Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

It is important to remember that dream interpretation is highly personal. The specific meaning of someone appearing in a dream depends on factors that are unique to you. Examining your dreams and trying to understand their meanings, both literal and symbolic, can give you greater insights into your own thoughts, emotions, and relationships.

"That's the power of dreams!" Lyon says. "To help us grow and understand ourselves in ways that we could never do while awake and, from these insights, find peace within ourselves and carry that peace to others."

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Dreaming about someone is a reflection of your own thoughts and subconscious feelings versus an indication of how they are feeling or thinking about you. That's why it is important not to make inferences about what others might think based on your dreams.

While two people can certainly dream about the same topic or have similar dreams, their dreams would still differ in various ways.

Similarities in dreams are most likely due to factors such as shared experiences, connections, and cultural influences. For example, two friends who attended the same event might have dreams with similar elements.

Common dream themes do exist that often show up in many people's dreams. Some things that people commonly dream about include being late, falling, flying, school-related activities, sex, and being chased.

house of your dreams essay

Twenty-four hours in Washington, and I have the blues. The place has an acute case of Moscow envy. It's not just the new architecture, all those squatty cement and glass blocks with their Stali nesque intimation that humans are all right in their proper place and that their proper place is inside a filing cabinet, though that helps.

The Moscow envy is more obvious in the growing passion for secrecy, which has infected even that son of the wide- open camera, Ronald Reagan. There he is on television now. While the people have the right to know about their Government's attempts to overthrow other governments, ''You can't let your people know,'' he is saying, ''without letting the wrong people know - those who are in opposition to what you're doing.''

This is not exactly Lenin preaching that public ignorance paves the road to paradise. Still, when you parse the President's thinking, he seems to be saying that when people know what the Government is doing in important matters of foreign policy, it is very difficult for the Government to do what is good for us; hence, ignorance is in the national interest. Here is a wistful admission of envy for Moscow's power to preserve public ignorance. Of course it's wrong, the President concedes - ''People may have the right to know,'' he says - but, by golly, wouldn't it make my work a lot easier if I had Andropov's power to keep you in the dark? The day after the President's public onset of Moscow envy the local press details progress in Government operations aimed at erecting a Washington version of an iron curtain between Government workers and the people who pay their rent. There is, for example, the new Presidential directive establishing lifetime censorship upon every hired hand who handles classified paper. The order took effect last March. The General Accounting Office says it will affect 2.5 million Government workers and 1.5 million people working under Government contracts. Among those who will have to submit to censorship for the rest of their lives are people like Secretary of State Shultz, Secretary of Defense Weinberger and presumably President Reagan.

After leaving Government they will not be allowed to make a speech or publish a book or an article based on their Government experience without first obtaining the censor's approval. The history of censorship suggests this approval may be mighty slow in coming when some future government, hostile to Reaganist ideas, inherits the power to stifle their expression. This extraordinary effort to prevent the flow of informed criticism is the most blatant evidence so far of the fever produced by Moscow envy, yet there is no great outrage about it. Some sulking, to be sure, can be detected, and that is depressing too. Sulking is permitted even in Moscow. It is the cry of outrage that is verboten . The day after the President's press conference, the local press reports an advance in the security police's progress toward buttoning the lips of bureaucrats. Richard Willard, a Justice Department lawyer who believes in mechanical lie detection, says all agencies have just been authorized to apply polygraph tests on workers of their choice, even those not suspected of ''leaking'' information.

This appears to be a terror tactic aimed at letting all hands know Big Brother is not only watching but also ready to pounce without warning, to strap them to a machine that measures bodily reactions to emotional stress and to punish them if their heart and sweat-gland performances do not measure up to the norms.

I can understand Soviet bureaucrats tolerating this sort of degradation. Life in or out of the Soviet bureaucracy probably involves endless bullying by the state. But will American Government people balk? Well, the pay is good and Washington is a comfortable place to live. Still, you might expect some who fret about dignity and honor to clear out rather than have their honor determined by measuring heartbeat behavior and perspiration flow.

Rochesterfest selects 2024 “Live Your Dream” Grand Marshal for Grand Parade

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Rochester’s annual summer celebration, Rochesterfest, announced the community member who was picked to be the 2024 “Live Your Dream” Grand Marshal.

His company, Black Swan Real Estate, has supported the Rochester Police Department in the past by sponsoring events like Safe City Nights and Shop with a Cop.

  • American business should not empower a criminal, says Reid Hoffman

No rational CEO would want a capricious strongman in the White House, argues the entrepreneur

house of your dreams essay

W OULD NEW YORK be a global financial capital, or even a prosperous city, if markets had no basis for trusting the transactions that happen there? Obviously not.

Businesses and investors rely on a robust legal system—especially courts of law and impartial, fact-based trials by jury—to enforce contracts and punish fraud. That’s why, in the past decade alone, New York City prosecutors have brought thousands of felony charges for falsifying business records. It’s a crime because it strikes at American prosperity.

For American business, the rule of law is essential. It is the soil in which commerce can take root and grow. Without this stable, predictable, rules-based environment, New York, and America, would not have become the hubs of innovation, investment, profit and progress that they are.

Unfortunately, many American business leaders have recently developed a kind of myopia, miscalculating what politics, and which political leaders, will truly support their long-term success. Perhaps this stems from their having lived their entire lives in a stable legal regime that they now take for granted. But a robust, reliable legal system is not a given. It is a necessity we can ill afford to live without. We trade it away at our peril.

Which makes it all the more lamentable that a growing number of America’s corporate and financial leaders are opening their wallets for Donald Trump.

Of course, few of these leaders would do actual business with Mr Trump. Even fewer would trust him to pay his bills. Long before the Electoral College made him president in 2016, Mr Trump was known as a liar and grifter who would browbeat vendors and debtors. More recently, American courts—including two unanimous juries—have found him to have engaged in sexual assault, defamation, fraud (including misuse of charitable funds) and—by a unanimous Colorado Supreme Court—insurrection.

So why are so many of my business-leader peers writing cheques to give nearly unchecked power to a man with whom they wouldn’t sign a condominium contract? There are a few explanations.

Some kid themselves, or pretend, that Mr Trump can be normal and controlled. Never mind the striking refusal by his former vice-president, Mike Pence, to endorse him as the Republican nominee. Or the stinging words of John Kelly, Mr Trump’s longest-serving chief of staff, who has called him “a person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our constitution, and the rule of law”. Dozens of other former Trump officials, military leaders and campaign operatives echo this analysis.

Others of Mr Trump’s business-class supporters claim that President Joe Biden is somehow more dangerous than the convicted felon and pathological liar. The laziest cite the actions of far-left figures who play no role in Mr Biden’s administration. Relatively more serious critics mention disagreeable Democratic economic policies. When they manage to get specific with their criticisms, I sometimes agree. But if economics is their metric, it seems not just irrational but deeply irresponsible for them to ignore some clear financial truths. Under Mr Biden America has hit record after record: in stockmarkets, oil and gas production, employment and more. And its GDP growth is the envy of most of the world’s economies.

Sadly, the true motives of some in Mr Trump’s camp are even uglier. He and his ideological allies have been quite explicit: upon regaining power, they intend to corrupt the legal system to use the state against political opponents. Some American elites support this autocratic agenda because in such a Trumpist regime they expect to be the new oligarchs. Others fear that opposing Mr Trump will bring retaliation, so seek safety by pledging loyalty.

Most conventionally, of course, there is the simple siren promise of a second Trump term’s lower corporate-tax rates and softer regulatory enforcement. But it’s all penny-wise at best, when stacked against the likelihood of, say, Justice, State and Defence Departments purged and restaffed with MAGA cronies, loyal not to the USA but to DJT .

There is a historical pattern to the collapse of the rule of law in advanced countries: it happens when powerful groups naively judge that a strongman will stay contained. Today’s pro-Trump business elites are making the same crucial mistake as any other influential group choosing to empower an autocrat. To paraphrase Tim Snyder, a Yale historian: “He is not your strongman—he is his own strongman.”

Mr Trump’s felony convictions in the Stormy Daniels election-interference case, and the subsequent Republican attack on the American judicial system, have clarified this election’s epochal stakes: the systemic rule of law versus the capricious rule of a strongman.

America’s rules-based system, with its stability and continuity, has delivered enormous gains to the country—and to humanity. America saw its first peaceful transfer of political power in 1801. This proud tradition went unbroken until the Capitol attack of January 6th 2021. And the man who broke with it, a criminal, is dead-set on scuttling the system that really did make America great.

When the courts go against him, as they so often have, Mr Trump claims—just like every other “wrongly” convicted felon—that the system is rigged. Meanwhile his lawyers have argued at the Supreme Court that as president he should be permitted any use of state violence. And Mr Trump’s party is now committed to delegitimising, rejecting and attacking juries, courts, elections and any other mechanisms that might hold the leader legally or electorally accountable. The danger speaks for itself.

In short, the rule of law is on the line in this election. Americans who prize respect for the law, stability and prosperity—including even business leaders who might value the last of these most highly—should take Mr Trump literally and seriously, and do everything they can to prevent his return to the White House. ■

Imagining SEC name change possibilities from Waffle House to Tito's to Nick Saban

house of your dreams essay

The Big 12, as you once knew it, is long gone . Half of the membership from the original dozen teams vamoosed. The conference’s name itself might be the next to go.

What’s in a name? Money, in this case.

The Big 12 preserved its name even while it operated with 10 and later 14 teams. Now, that it's back to a 12-team league, it is reportedly considering selling off the conference’s name to a corporate sponsor in a move that could generate millions in new annual revenue.

The Action Network reported that insurance giant Allstate is an interested potential sponsor, which could turn the Big 12 into the Allstate 12 Conference.

Expect the tradition-rich SEC to be more hesitant to go down this path. Even as the SEC expanded from 10 to 12 to 14 and now 16 teams, the conference carefully selected new schools that meshed with the conference’s fabric and fit into the league’s geography and culture. The SEC is a powerful, lucrative brand with a carefully crafted identity.

Mention the SEC to a passerby on the street, and more people would think Southeastern Conference than they would Securities and Exchange Commission.

The SEC enjoys a position of financial strength. It doesn't need to sell its name.

But, the Big 12’s news got my creative wheel turning, and I mused: If the SEC considered selling its name to a sponsor, what are possibilities?

TOPPMEYER: How the SEC gutted Big 12, Oklahoma to Texas

ALLSTATE CONFERENCE?: When P. T. Barnum (excuse me, Brett Yormark) comes to college sports, bring on circus

Let’s have some fun, shall we, with these far-fetched ideas.

Waffle House Conference

This one is too easy. If you created a Venn Diagram of SEC football fans and Waffle House enthusiasts, it would just look like two circles placed on top of one another. So, I give you the Waffle House Conference, where opponents go to get smothered, covered and diced.

Buc-ee’s Conference

Gas station doesn’t accurately describe what Buc-ee’s is to the South. It’s a transformative experience. You could easily spend an hour (and a couple-hundred bucks) inside the gas station’s accompanying country store. If the SEC partnered with Buc-ee’s, I’m envisioning cleaner stadium restrooms and vendors selling hot brisket. Not bad, huh? Plus, who doesn’t love that cute beaver logo?

Dream Motor Group Conference

Never heard of the Dream Motor Group? It’s Nick Saban’s Mercedes-Benz car dealership. Many SEC fans claim Alabama runs the conference behind the scenes. Time to step out from behind the curtain, Mr. Oz. Golf can’t fill all of Saban's time. He can appoint himself czar of the Dream Motor Group Conference.

ExxonMobil Conference

Big Oil meets college football. Doesn't get more American than that. Initially, I considered just having Jimbo Fisher sponsor the SEC – he’s got money to burn – but a Jimbo Conference would fail to meet expectations, so I pivoted to ExxonMobil. Surely Fisher didn’t dry up all of the oil reserves. Forget coaches’ buyouts. Sponsor a conference instead. Be on the winning side, not the loser’s.

Tito’s Conference

Tito’s, a vodka distilled in Austin, Texas, captured America’s heart thanks to its effective marketing, corn mash and clean taste. Tito’s bottles are ubiquitous at pregame tailgates, while fans work up a morning buzz on Bloody Marys, screwdrivers and the like. Anyway, “It Just Means More” is starting to age. Freshen the conference motto. How about, Tito’s Conference: It’s lit.
