James Movie Review: A fitting ode to Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar

Watching a posthumous release is always cathartic. Especially, if it's a film starring an ever-smiling person like Puneeth Rajkumar, you can't help but give in to nostalgia. Puneeth Rajkumar would have been 47 years old today, March 17. While he passed away in October 2021, his fans gathered to celebrate their idol one last time. And, James doesn't disappoint.

James doesn't take time to delve into the story. Director Chethan Kumar jumps into the plot right from the first frame. We are introduced to the main villains, who belong to the drug mafia. In comes Santhosh Kumar AKA James, who runs a security agency called J Wings. He has been hired to rescue a rich businessman's daughter, captured by his rivals. Only Santhosh Kumar is willing to take the risk. And he does the job to perfection.

Soon, Santhosh is hired by the Gayakawad family to provide security. He earns their trust by showing his willingness to sacrifice his life in order to save them. But, Santhosh has a past. And he is here for revenge. Why is Santhosh so stiff? What about his family and why does he take revenge? These questions form the plot of James.

James is an out-and-out star vehicle and it completely belongs to Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar. The director has done a wonderful job with the introduction scene of Puneeth. We don't really get to see him for 10 minutes. Even when he comes on screen, the visuals are blurred. It makes you eager to get a look at the star. And with a stunning car chase sequence, Puneeth Rajkumar comes alive on screen. Hoots and whistles follow.

It is a bittersweet experience to see Puneeth Rajkumar doing what he did best. From enacting emotional sequences to nailing difficult dance steps, he has given his all to James. We get to see cameos from his elder brothers, Shivarajkumar and Raghavendra Rajkumar. There is a sense of melancholy when we look at the entire Rajkumar family coming together for a film. Then, it hits you that this will never happen again.

Puneeth Rajkumar owns the film. James has its fair share of problems. For example, the pace of the first half is slow and only Puneeth saves it with his charm. It is during the intermission, when Puneeth's character undergoes a transformation, that you get invested in the story. The flashback portions and climax are tastefully done.

Sarath Kumar, Srikanth Meka and several other villains in the film did their best. So did Priya Anand, who has a meaty role to play. Music director Charan Raj's work enhanced the overall impact of the film.

There are a few scenes in the film where the makers used computer graphics to bring Puneeth Rajkumar alive on screen. These scenes do give you a reality check that the generous man is no more... That James was his last film as a leading man. Fare thee well, Puneeth Rajkumar!

Puneeth Rajkumar's James movie review: An absolute action adieu

It is said that all sorrows can be accepted if you put them into a story or tell a story about them. In a certain way, James tells the story of Appu, who won the hearts of fans not just in Sandalwood but beyond too. James will always have a profound place for the lingering sadness in the minds of many because this is the last time we would see the talented young actor on the silver screen. Cast: Puneeth Rajkumar, Priya Anand, Rangayana Raghu, Srikant Meka, Sarathkumar, Anu Prabhakar, Chikkanna, Tilak, Harish, and Shine Shetty Director: Chethan Kumar Rating: 3.5 / 5 James features the late Puneeth Rajkumar as the quintessential hero, a courageous saviour, a patriot, and a romantic. These are characters that Appu has showcased many times in his previous films, and seeing it all come together in a single film would be the stuff of dreams for his fans and the Kannada audience. The importance of the film gains more prominence when viewed from the perspective that he is no more around. It is quite the emotional ride for the fans who get to see their matinee idol provide them with one final treat with a commercial outing. The film begins with a title song, and syndicates from different parts of the world running illegal businesses are introduced. Santhosh (Puneeth Rajkumar) runs a security agency and takes up an assignment of providing security to top businessman Vijay Gayakwad (Srikanth Meka) and his family. He takes Gayakwad into confidence and the businessman even treats Santhosh as family. However, the twist comes when Santhosh's true identity is revealed. What is his purpose? What is the intention behind the title James? Why did a soldier quit his job to run a security agency? The answers to these questions make up the second half that ends up becoming a revenge drama. While the first half breezes through with action and a dash of humour, the real challenge for director Chethan Kumar lies in the second half, but he cleverly manages to fill all gaps. Puneeth, who makes his presence felt in every scene, has a stylish mass avatar and has pulled off some gripping high-adrenaline-action sequences. Although Shivarajkumar's voice for him initially seems uncomfortable, it does grow on us. Chethan has also managed to bring all three brothers in one film, with Shivarajkumar and Raghavendra Rajkumar appearing in significant cameo roles. James is lavish and comes with rich production qualities, but one drawback is the cliched plot of the drug mafia. Also, there are too many villains in the film, all played by well-known actors like Sarathkumar, Srikanth Meka, Adithya, Mukesh Rishi, Madhusudan Rao, and the list goes on. The importance of the heroine, Priya Anand, is felt in the climax. Anu Prabhakar has a very short but sweet presence. Rangayana Raghu shares a good screen space along with Puneeth, and good support comes from an ensemble cast -- Tilak, Harisha, Shine Shetty, Chikanna, Nayana, Samiksha, and Kavya Shastry among others. The film also sees a cameo appearance by Chandan Shetty, Rachita Ram, Ashika Ranganath, and Sreeleela in the introduction song.   Apart from direction, Chethan has also written screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics, dialogues, and lyrics, penning some punch lines delivered by the actor. Charan Raj, who did not have an opportunity to tune in too many songs, has come up with a couple of good melodies, and an interesting background score. J Swamy had a hectic job capturing the right emotions in the drama, and his work in the film is definitely worthy of applause. Credit should also go to stunt masters -- brothers Ram Laxman, Ravi Varma,Vijay, Arjun and Chethan D Souza, who have chalked out enough high-octane-action sequences with the Power Star. All in all, James definitely is a worthy tribute to the Power Star, and when the final credits roll, and we see Puneeth give us his much-loved smile, it brings a tear to our eyes. Farewell, Appu... you will always be missed.

James Movie First Review Out: Puneeth Rajkumar's Actioner Gets 4-Star Rating!

Fans can't keep calm as only hours remain for the grand release of Puneeth Rajkumar's last film James . The actioner has been winning hearts already and fans are eagerly waiting to witness a never-seen-before extravaganza on the screens. People across Karnataka have been celebrating the advent of his film with giant cutouts that are erected at theatres and streets. Netizens have also been trending hashtags #PuneethRajkumar, #AppuLivesOn and #BoloBoloJames on Twitter to celebrate and remember the late hero with joy.

The film written and directed by Chethan Kumar will be releasing on March 17. Let us tell you that James is releasing in as many as 4000 screens worldwide and the pre-bookings have been making the right noises ever since its opening. Going by the reports on social media, the film is going to set all-time record in the state and elsewhere with its box office collection on day 1. Well, what has also added zest to the ongoing celebration is the first review of the film.

According to Umair Sandhu, critic and a member of the Overseas Censor Board, James is going to impress Power Star fans with mass elements. Well, with the first review going viral on social media, fans are super elated and are now eagerly waiting to see their Power Star on the big screens for one last time. Kaanekkaane movie review: Riveting cinema with a contentious take on lapses of conscience

The heart and soul of Kaanekkaane is Suraj Venjaramoodu who has had an incredible journey in recent years from character artiste to leading man.

Kaanekkaane is not easy to slot. It is at one level a thriller, but an unconventional addition to that genre since the big reveal comes much before the climax. The reason for this narrative structure is evident: the mystery-that-was-not-initially-considered-a-mystery is pivotal to the plot, but at its core, this film is less about the suspense around that element than it is a study of human psychology.   

Directed by Manu Ashokan whose debut feature was the excellent Parvathy-starrer Uyare (2019), Kaanekkaane ’s effectiveness hinges on its meticulously measured incremental revelations about its central trio. Manu and writers Bobby and Sanjay (who also wrote Uyare ) are determined not to paint any of them as an all-out villain or angel, which is the entire point of the film, the source of its brilliance but also its Achilles heel since this determination leads to a disputable equivalence being suggested between two characters. This contentious comparison calls for a long discussion, but the film nevertheless remains riveting from start to finish, not just as a whodunwhat but also with the gradual unravelling of the moral questions it raises.   

It begins with a lightly gray-haired Paul (Suraj Venjaramoodu) buying chocolates, candles and matches at a roadside store. The latter are for a visit to a cemetery, the chocolates are for his grandson Kuttu (Alok Krishna).   

Paul next arrives at a house and the door is opened by a pregnant young woman. She addresses him as Papa but he seems to know little about her and they are clearly uneasy with each other. We gradually learn that she is Sneha (Aishwarya Lekshmi), wife of Allen (Tovino Thomas) who was earlier married to Paul’s late daughter Sherin (Shruti Ramachandran) who died in an accident .  

In a quiet and unhurried manner, the narrative travels back and forth between the past and present to establish Paul’s easygoing equation with Sherin, the father-son-like bond between Paul and Allen, Paul’s quest for justice for Sherin, how Allen and Sneha met, the load on the grieving Allen’s mind and the inexplicable force gnawing at their relationship. The direction and Abhilash Balachandran’s fluid editing ensure that there are no obvious heralds of these shifts in time, yet spotting a shift becomes an enjoyable exercise without being a strain.   

Each scene adds a new piece to the puzzle, while the music by Ranjin Raj is used to enhance the film’s enigmatic atmosphere and air of intense sadness.

Kaanekkaane is about how lives can be altered forever with a single decision, how guilt or bitterness can consume people, about the pulls, pushes and complexities of relationships, and how in a moment of weakness even an ordinary human being might be capable of shocking, even uncharacteristic, morally repugnant deeds.

This brings us to the one issue with the film. Two persons in Kaanekkaane indulge in briefly terrible conduct at separate instants in time. It is not impossible to believe that real people might behave similarly, but it is troubling that the storytelling implies an equivalence between their actions. The first was criminally heartless, compounded by a pile-up of lies, and the progression towards that final act is inadequate; the second is a momentary, believable and relatable lapse of conscience with a build-up towards it that, while not justifying it, does help us understand how it might have happened.   

The forgiveness that comes in the end is dependent on this duo viewing each other as equally culpable. In reality it is likely that they might have arrived at this conclusion, but the problem is that the film itself appears to take the stand that they are.   

Bobby and Sanjay are stalwarts of Malayalam cinema, and up to that second where these two individuals are equated by implication, the narrative is flawless. Here though, it feels like convincing characterisation has taken a backseat to the larger point that Kaanekkaane aims to make.   

It does not help this turn of events that the writing of Sherin is not as detailed as the others, nor is her relationship with Allen fleshed out as thoroughly as the rest. The sudden revving up of emotions and the pointedly elevated sound design in the last scene also do not match the understated tone of the film until then.   

While this debate continues, it must be acknowledged that Kaanekkaane is gripping and beautifully acted every step of the way.

Tovino and Aishwarya are as immersed in their roles as they usually are, making it hard to unequivocally pass judgement against their characters. Although very different films, Kaanekkaane is a worthy follow-up to the electric chemistry they conjured up on screen in Mayaanadhi (2017).   

The supporting characters in this film are also well cast and well played.   

The heart and soul of Kaanekkaane , however, is Suraj Venjaramoodu who has had an incredible journey in recent years from character artiste to leading man.

If you thought it was not possible for him to outdo his own performances in Android Kunjappan Version 5.25 , Vikruthi and this year’s pan-India rage, The Great Indian Kitchen , you thought wrong. Venjaramoodu seems to be in possession of a secret weighing instrument on which he determines the optimum quantum of emotions to express on screen without the effort showing. His perfectly calibrated acting in this film is epitomised by that conversation in which he tells Allen about the life he had planned for himself if Sherin had been alive. He broke my heart in that scene.   

There is a lot to recommend in Kaanekkaane , and right on top of that list are two words: Suraj Venjaramoodu.

'Vishesham' review | A feel-good family drama with a distinctive tone

After dabbling in a horror thriller in his third directorial, filmmaker Sooraj Tom is back this time with 'Vishesham', a feel-good family entertainer. Interestingly, the movie features Madhusoodanan Anand (as the lead), who made his debut as a scriptwriter with Sooraj's previous film 'Krishnankutty Panithudangi'. In 'Vishesham' too, both Sooraj and Anand join forces to take us through the lives of a couple who are navigating the ups and downs of their second marriage. As in other family dramas, 'Vishesham' too oscillate between love, marriages and children. Despite deploying the predictable cliches of storytelling, it stays distinct in tone, giving us a more sensitive portrayal of what relationships need to be in this time and age.

In treatment too, there is an attempt at good comedy, with Althaf Salim, taking some of the limelight. The actor's performance in 'Mandakini' was criticised, but as Shiju's (Madhusoodanan Anand) friend and marriage broker, he brings back his old charm. Some of the comedy scenes do fall flat and some even come across as sexist, but the dialogues feel largely relatable.

This is Anand's first outing as an actor and he has nailed his role. The music, also composed by Anand, blends in well. But the highlight is Chinnu Chandni Nair's performance as Saju, a divorcee who dons the khaki to get back at her ex-husband, played by Dileesh Pothan. We have seen her impressive performance in supporting roles, in films like 'Kaathal-The Core'. As a leading lady, she holds a lot of promise.

Though the makers have been extremely cautious about the female body image in the film, they don't seem too bothered about being politically correct about the hero's semi-bald look. The movie also discusses infertility, choosing not to scratch on the surface, but giving us a broader understanding of the difficulties faced by childless couples. The supporting actors, including Baiju Johnson and PP Kunhikrihsnan, among others have also essayed their roles well.

The South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA 2024) celebrate the exceptional talent and hard work of the South Indian film industry. This year marks the 12th edition of the prestigious award show, covering contributions from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema. Anticipation for the nominations has been building, and the final list is now out.

The current nomination list features numerous blockbuster hits such as Dasara, Jailer , Kaatera , and many others. For Best Director, the nominees include Srikant Odela, Sai Rajesh, Karthik Varma Dandu, and Gopichand Malineni, among others. Meanwhile, the Best Actor in a Leading Role category boasts nominees such as Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Nani, and Dhanush.

Additionally, awards will be given for Best Actor/Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Music Director, Best Lyric Writer, and many more. This highlights the broad scope of the SIIMA awards in recognizing and praising the artistic contributions to the South Indian film industry.

When & where will SIIMA 2024 be held?

The SIIMA award ceremony was first held in June 2012 at the Dubai World Trade Centre and spans over two days. The first day celebrates upcoming South Indian film artists, while the second day is dedicated to the main SIIMA Awards. This year, the 12th South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) is set to take place in WTC, Dubai, on September 14 and 15, 2024.

Brinda Prasad Adusumili, the chairperson of SIIMA, recently shared his views on the SIIMA 2023 nominations, saying that “South Indian filmmakers have broken the language barrier and produced national hits, making regional the new national.” Summing up his thoughts, he then stated, “SIIMA 2024 is going to have a strong contenders list.”

However, the rise of OTT platforms and the practice of dubbing have propelled the South Indian film industry to new heights. Many South Indian movies have become hits due to filmmakers producing films in multiple languages, reaching a wider audience and gaining immense popularity.

Meet the rich and famous people in Mumbai for the Ambani wedding

Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani , the youngest son of Asia's richest man , are getting married in Mumbai on Friday, with events following on Saturday and Sunday.

The Ambanis will be surrounded by family, friends, and a who's who of business, entertainment, politics, and sport.

The star-studded affair will kick off with a "Shubh Vivaah," a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony held around a fire, according to a leaked wedding invitation seen by news agency Asian News International. This will be followed by a "Shubh Aashirwad" or "divine blessing" ceremony on Saturday, and the wedding concludes with a reception party or "Mangal Utsav" on Sunday.

It's expected to be held at the Jio World Convention Centre and the Ambani family home in Mumbai called Antilia.

Hollywood actor John Cena arrived for the wedding wearing a light blue Indian outfit called a "Salwar Kameez."

Kim Kardashian and sister Khloe Kardashian shared photographs and clips on their Instagram Stories after arriving in Mumbai on Thursday and are rumored to be attending.

The wedding's guest list is expected to include a bevy business leaders, including former BP CEO Bob Dudley . Dudley attended the family's pre-wedding festivities in February.

Mike Tyson is expected to attend the wedding, insiders told Bloomberg. The 58-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers.
