Educational apps are a great option for roadschooling, long car rides, and time spent in waiting rooms. We use educational apps and screen time as an incentive to get through challenging or boring lessons.

9 best free apps for your new Amazon Fire tablet that you should download today
Yup, they're fire
![kindle fire educational apps Amazon Fire Tablet](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/sBJbhvjJZ5pFNLb5Ka8ceU-320-80.jpg)
Amazon ’s Fire tablets deliver tremendous value, especially if you’re entrenched in the Amazon Prime ecosystem for consuming books, music, video, and more. We’ve scoured the Amazon Appstore to find the five best Fire, free tablet apps to download today.
While Amazon’s tablets carry an attractively low cost, their one caveat is they rely on the Amazon Appstore – and not all of the most popular or best Android apps are on the Fire OS Appstore. Of the mobile app ecosystems, the Amazon Appstore more closely aligns with the Google Play Store , since Fire OS is based on a variant of an earlier version of Android ( Android 11 ). (This point might change since the rumor mill points to Amazon moving its Fire OS to a custom OS away from Android, but that hasn’t happened yet).
Many apps on Fire OS are paid or subscription-only. Among the free apps, we found some gems, and a lot of disappointments, with plenty of apps not updated recently or from individual developers. We narrowed our picks down to free apps in five categories. We don’t include any streaming entertainment services, though, since those target a specific customer.
Read on for the five best tablet apps every Fire tablet user should download.
Best for photo editing: Picsart
![kindle fire educational apps Amazon FireTablet Apps](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/shSRayJMPEAmoL7Nid3qLW-320-80.jpg)
Picsart is an image editor with AI tools plus fun backgrounds and effects to apply to your pictures. Its primary navigation is locked in vertical mode; but when we loaded a horizontal image, the interface switched accordingly. You can access images stored locally as well as on Dropbox or Amazon Photos. The app also lets you create sketches and do basic video editing. Plus, it generates templates, like Canva (not available on Fire OS), but this plus some other editing features requires a Picsart Gold subscription ($55.99 after a 3-month trial).
- Download Picsart
Best for Google feature dupe: Video For YouTube
![kindle fire educational apps Amazon FireTablet Apps](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hmiYbMK8wLevq3kKTtqwfV-320-80.jpg)
If you get a Fire tablet, you don’t have access to Google ’s suite of services. While some can be replaced by other apps (i.e. Microsoft Outlook for Gmail, MapQuest for Google Maps ), nothing’s quite like YouTube . This is why Video For YouTube is such a clutch find. Not only does it provide an interface to YouTube, but you can also sign in with your Google account to get access to your videos and browsing algorithms.
- Download Video For YouTube
Best for weather: MyRadar
![kindle fire educational apps Amazon FireTablet Apps](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Kwz9RTcjNaASZpxnW5DQUV-320-80.jpg)
Think of MyRadar as a weather app on steroids. MyRadar lets you zoom into any part of the country to see granular details about the weather. The app can also show air quality, useful for days when the air gets hazardous.

![kindle fire educational apps Amazon FireTablet Apps](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8sLoYy7cUnwQyrMVALuRCW-320-80.jpg)
Stop Motion Studio is a favorite on iOS and Android, and it makes the cut here on Fire OS, too. The app lets you capture and create stop-motion movies. The free version is fairly functional on its own, but if you want more advanced functions – including importing images, green screen, remote camera, 4K support, rotoscoping, title themes, and more – the app has a one-time $5.99 fee.
- Download Stop Motion Studio
Best for handwriting: INKredible
![kindle fire educational apps Amazon FireTablet Apps](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/nDmtio4oLmYUX9WaQzyKmW-320-80.jpg)

The free account has ads interspersed with music (Plus and Premium versions start at $4.99 a month and remove the ads, get better audio quality, and gain more personalization). You can choose artists and songs to play, or have Pandora create personalized “stations” to showcase your tunes based on specific artists.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids (2023) is our top choice for the best kids tablet , and with good reason. It's inexpensive enough that you don't have to spend your days constantly worrying about your kids destroying it, and even if your kids do have that special knack of destroying most of their nice things, the tablet is robust enough to handle most things that kids can throw at it.

How to set up an Amazon Kindle for children
The Kindle is a great reading device. Here's how to make it perfect for your children to use.
You even get a year's free subscription to Amazon Kids+, which gives you access to a huge number of apps, books, games, videos, and more. However, Amazon Kids+ isn't the only source of great kids apps for your Fire tablet. There are plenty of fun and educational apps out there that you can use to help your kids build skills, or just to keep them quiet for half an hour. Here are some of the best Fire tablet apps for kids, including entertainment, education, and game apps.

![kindle fire educational apps disney on fire tablet app](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/disney-on-fire-tablet-app.jpg)
Tablets are a great way to keep your kids entertained, especially if you're going on long journeys. If there's one movie studio that's guaranteed to keep your kids quiet for an hour or two, it's Disney. Disney+ gives your kids access to a huge number of classic Disney movies, from classics like Snow White and The Jungle Book to popular modern movies such as Frozen and Wreck-it Ralph. You also get access to Pixar movies , too, including the Toy Story movies and newer classics like Inside Out.
Disney+ isn't just about movies, however. There are hundreds of great series and documentaries your kids can watch, too, covering everything from the Mickey Mouse Fun House to PJ Masks. You can set up a 'child account' so that your little ones can only access age-appropriate content, but adults can also enjoy all the adult content, such as the Star Wars and Marvel movies, and popular series such as The Bear.
- Download Disney Plus (free with in-app purchases)
2 Amazon Prime Video
![kindle fire educational apps amazon prime kids app](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/amazon-prime-kids-app.jpg)
If you're using an Amazon tablet, you probably have an Amazon Prime subscription. If you do, you get access to tons of additional content on Amazon Prime Video . While it may not serve up the sheer quantity of classic kids films and shows that Disney+ can, there's still a lot of great movies and shows for kids on the streaming service. You can also set up a kids account to ensure that they only see content that's suitable.
![kindle fire educational apps Amazon Fire HD 10](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2024/02/amazon-fire-hd-10-2.jpg)
Best kids tablet: Parent approved and reviewed
The best tablets for kids are durable, educational, and entertaining.
There are entire series of popular shows, such as Blaze and the Monster Machines and Thomas and Friends, and there are even some Amazon originals, such as LOL Winter Disco if your kids are into LOL Surprise toys. There are also plenty of great kids movies for them to watch, such as Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and The Grinch. Best of all, it's free if you're already a Prime member.
- Download the Prime Video app (free with in-app purchases)
![kindle fire educational apps netflix on amazon fire kids](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/netflix-on-amazon-fire-kids.jpg)
Another great streaming option for kids is Netflix. There's a whole heap of great content for kids, including popular movies such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , the Harry Potter movies, Matilda the Musical, and more. There are also plenty of great series, including Lego Masters, Peppa Pig, PAW Patrol, and the highly addictive and absurd, Is It Cake?
There are also some excellent original Netflix shows and movies too; if you haven't seen Vivo, the animated musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, then you need to check it out, because the songs are genuinely awesome. There's also Netflix's own sequel to the stop-motion animation Chicken Run, which is definitely worth a watch. As with Prime Video and Disney+, it's possible to set up a kids' account that they can access themselves, which includes only age-appropriate content. You can then sign in to your own profile when you're ready to binge Squid Game: The Challenge (which you really need to do).
- Download the Netflix app (free with in-app purchases)
4 Minecraft
![kindle fire educational apps Minecraft Legends 5](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/minecraft-legends-5.jpg)
In the 1995 novel Microserfs by Douglas Coupland, a group of programmers create a program that's a little like a virtual version of Lego, allowing you to create anything you want from smaller parts. In 2009, Minecraft burst onto the scene, and in many ways made that fictional program a reality.

32 incredible Minecraft creations that will blow your mind
Finding the best Minecraft creations is a bit of a job, but Pocket-lint has rounded up some of the most incredible examples. Straight from the overactive
Minecraft is a hugely popular sandbox game that's available across a huge number of different platforms and allows you to build incredible creations by mining raw materials and using them to build structures. You can build everything from a simple wall to an entire castle or even a whole city . Since the game has a strong creative element, you may not feel quite so bad about your child spending a lot of time on the tablet playing it.

5 Subway Surfers
![kindle fire educational apps subway surfers app on amazon fire tablet](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/subway-surfers-app-on-amazon-fire-tablet.png)
Subway Surfers is an endless runner game in which your character keeps running forwards, and you must jump, slide, and surf around the obstacles that appear in your path. You'll need to avoided buses, trains, and other barriers while collecting coins to boost your score. The controls are really simple and child-friendly (all you need to do is swipe left, right, up, or down on the screen), so even younger kids can play it without too much difficulty, and it definitely has that 'just-one-more-try' addictive repetition that all the best games seem to have.
- Download the Subway Surfers app (free with in-app purchases)
6 Crossy Road
![kindle fire educational apps crossy road app on amazon fire tablet](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/crossy-road-app-on-amazon-fire-tablet.png)
Some games are so simple they seem like they simply can't be any fun, but then turn out to be not only great fun, but also incredibly addictive. Tetris, anyone ? Crossy Road definitely falls into that category. You're a little chicken with one mission: to cross the road without getting squished. The trouble is, there are cars, trucks, trains, and more waiting to turn you into chicken soup.
If you ever played the classic arcade game Frogger, you'll find this game very familiar, and probably spend a good few hours playing it yourself trying to show your kids up with your vintage skills. Once again, the controls are very simple, so even younger kids can play it without much explanation.
- Download the Crossy Road app (free with in-app purchases)
7 Khan Academy Kids
![kindle fire educational apps khan academy kids app on amazon fire tablet](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/khan-academy-kids-app-on-amazon-fire-tablet.png)
The Fire tablet isn't just a great way to entertain your kids, it's also a great way to encourage independent learning, too. There are some excellent educational apps available, and Khan Academy Kids is definitely worth a look. It's a spin-off from the non-profit educational organization that offers online lessons and exercises for older students.
In Khan Academy Kids, you can learn basic skills in areas such as mathematics and languages which can help prepare kids for school or be used as a supplementary tool to their schoolwork. There is a wide range of games that help kids improve their reading or mathematical skills; the app is aimed at kids aged 2-8 and isn't really something that older kids will have any interest in.

8 Duolingo ABC
![kindle fire educational apps duolingo abc app on amazon fire tablet](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/duolingo-abc-app-on-amazon-fire-tablet.png)
Duolingo is a hugely popular language learning app that uses gamification to encourage people to learn a little bit of a language each day. Over time, you can learn quite a significant amount of vocabulary and grammar just by doing a little a day. Duolingo Music also uses short lessons to help you learn the rudiments of music. Duolingo ABC takes the same concept of both apps and applies it to reading.

Best laptop for kids: Parent and teacher approved and ranked
The best kids' laptops are durable, budget-friendly, and powerful for both work and play.
In short lessons that you need to complete every day to keep your streak going, you're taught the skills that you need to be able to read, but also get practice at writing too. The touchscreen of the tablet is a great way to practice forming letters by tracing the examples with your finger. When you complete lessons, you can access stories which can help with reading skills.

9 Teach Your Monster to Read
![kindle fire educational apps teach your monster to read image (1)](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/teach-your-monster-to-read-image-1.jpg)
Teach Your Monster to Read is another fun app that can assist your children in their reading journey. It's a phonics-based game in which you play minigames to earn prizes by correctly completing the phonics challenges. It can help your child to learn the sounds of letters, how to blend sounds together, and how to recognize letters.
The app is from the Usborne Foundation in the UK, and so everything is in a British accent, but the plus side is that you get the voice of Simon Farnaby, which you may recognize from the incredible series Horrible Histories, and who also co-wrote (and appears in) the new Wonka movie.
- Download the Teach Your Monster to Read app ($8.99)
10 Toca Lab: Elements
![kindle fire educational apps toca labs elements app on amazon fire tablet](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/toca-labs-elements-app-on-amazon-fire-tablet.png)
If you're looking for something outside the worlds of reading, writing, and arithmetic, Toca Lab: Elements can help you get your science fix. This app introduces you to all 118 elements from the periodic table, by having you perform experiments on a cute little character, such as freezing them with dry ice, or heating them up with a Bunsen burner.
The experiments change the properties of the character and transform them into a different element. You can turn a solid into a gas by heating it, for example, or a liquid into a solid by cooling it. The technical science animations may not be 100% accurate, but it's still a fun way to learn and introduce early chemistry terms and concepts to children.
- Download the Toca Labs: Elements app ($3.99)
11 codeSpark Academy
![kindle fire educational apps codespark academy app on amazon fire tablet](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/12/codespark-academy-app-on-amazon-fire-tablet.png)
AI is coming to take all of our jobs, but maybe not your kids' future careers if they're interested in coding. The codeSpark Academy app can set your child on their way to an early interest in logic, design, and coding. Who knows, they could one day create the AI that saves humanity. Or destroys us all on whim. Just saying.
![kindle fire educational apps Puro Junior Jams feature image](https://static1.pocketlintimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/puro-junior-jams-feature-image.jpg)
Best kids' headphones: Gentle sound for little ears
The best headphones for kids are wireless, easy to connect, and have volume limiters in fun colors for kids.
The codeSpark Academy app may not be ideal for teaching kids that proper nouns should start with capital letters, but it can teach the rudiments of coding to kids as young as four. And if you don't know one end of a mouse from the other, don't worry; the lessons are intended to teach kids the key concepts of coding, without any input from grown-ups. Eventually, your kids can create their own games in the app and even share them with others. The skills that they learn should help them when they move on to coding on a laptop. The app is free, but when they grow up to be tech billionaires, you might want to convince them that you paid for it.

Sharing is caring!
We absolutely love our Amazon Fire tablets for family travel. In fact, we’ve acquired a full “family set” over the years! Carrying our tablets lightens our load by cutting out some of the other entertainment (and edutainment) options we might otherwise bring, and you all know we prefer to pack light.
For our family, our Amazon Fire tablets are the tickets to smooth long-haul flights and handling unexpected delays with our preschoolers. They were a total lifesaver during our two cross-country road trips too, especially once we discovered so many awesome free Amazon Fire apps for toddlers and Amazon Fire apps for kids.

Check out the latest Amazon Fire tablet options and prices – and keep your eyes peeled for their frequent promotions (including on the Freetime Amazon kids app)!
We generally limit their use at home, so the kids are always excited to be on a plane for 15 hours when they know that we’ll let them use apps and watch movies for 8 of those hours. We found that they really started to enjoy their Fires independently around age 2.5, though they’re useful for reading together even as a younger toddler’s tablet.
Our kids each have the Kidz Gear wired headphones , which have a volume limiter and come in great colors; they’re so comfortable, that sometimes we borrow them too!

Since 2020 brought us a lot more unexpected technology time, we added another headphone option for our kids to rotate. These wireless headphones get them through an entire day of Zoom calls and school apps before needing a charge, so they’re probably better suited to domestic flights rather than full-day international adventures. But they’re extremely comfortable, easy to use and have nice built-in volume controls. They also fold nicely and are a little sturdier than our Kidz Gear headphones.

Why we recommend the Kindle for toddlers and kids
There are a few reasons we like Amazon’s Fire tablets for toddlers (and even older kids) rather than some of the competitors:
- Rugged construction: These things are built so solidly that I don’t worry about handing them over to a clumsy and/or destructive kid. Ours have been thrown around for years and are still going strong.
![kindle fire educational apps kindle fire educational apps](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51z0MV16bNL._SL250_.jpg)
- Attractive pricing: The most basic Fire tablet starts at $49.99, and that gets you a compact device that handles basic entertainment needs on the road. That said, I’d probably bump up to the $79.99 Fire HD 8 to get a bigger, better screen and double the storage. For the most stunning visual experience, there’s even a 10″ model – see the latest pricing here . If you’re really concerned about your kid breaking it and space isn’t at a premium (like road tripping), you can consider the Fire Kids Edition (in 7″, HD 8″ and HD 10″ varieties) that includes a 2yr warranty, huge bumper/grip case and even a year of Freetime Unlimited. Talk about a perfect tablet for toddlers if there ever was one!
- Do you like FREE content? Me too. There’s tons of it available in Amazon’s ecosystem. If you’re a US-based Prime member, you can stream or download any of the offerings for free to take on flights. On our recent trip to Europe, we discovered that there’s even a selection of Prime content available abroad (which seems to be a new feature). Your Prime membership also grants access to a great catalog of streaming and downloadable music natively on the Fire tablet (or through the Amazon Music app on your phone). Finally, there are the free Amazon Fire apps for toddlers – keep reading for more on these! While there’s always been a good selection, the launch of Amazon Underground a few years ago has been a huge boon to Fire tablet owners, especially those with fickle kids!
- How about more free content? Amazon Freetime Unlimited gives you tons of free content that’s curated by age and very sophisticated parental controls – there are Kindle Fire apps for kids, books and even videos designated just for your child’s age. It’s free for a year if you buy the Fire Kids Edition to access some of the best Kindle Fire apps for kids, and costs just a few dollars per month on its own to continue the subscription. You can learn more about it here .
- Speaking of FREE, most public libraries allow you to borrow books on your Fire tablet or Kindle reader for free using Overdrive. We do this all the time, both at home and away. If a book isn’t available, you can even hop on the waitlist and have it automatically checked out. (If you don’t have an Amazon device, you can also access those books via the free Kindle Reading app .)
In case you’re new to the “Amazon ecosystem” , there’s so much great content and plenty of free trials to scope it all out:
-If you don’t have Amazon Prime yet, you’ll definitely want to try it out! It adds so much value beyond the shipping benefit we all know and love. There’s tons of streaming video content, a free book every month through the Kindle First program (including a new family favorite !), and the Kindle lending library. Click here to try it for free.
-We are loving our Amazon Music Unlimited subscription! We’ve road tripped over 5,000 miles in the last few months and it’s been an amazing gift to have everyone’s favorite tunes at our fingertips without carrying our old CD binders around. Grab a free month here.
-Have a kid in diapers? You can get all the Prime benefits and 20% of diapers if you join Amazon Family. Learn more about the program here .
So without further ado, here are our top FREE Amazon Fire kids apps. We’ve used most of these on our own tablets and the kids love them! There are also many apps for streaming videos from different services and networks, but I haven’t included those here because so many parents are looking for non-video options for their littlest travelers.
Best Kindle Fire apps for 2 year olds
The best toddler games on the Amazon Fire are the simple ones! The best Amazon Fire apps for 2 year olds are standbys like peek-a-boo, short stories, “chunky” puzzles and simple letter games are perfect – just like in the physical world. Here are the best toddler apps for Amazon Fire:
There are plenty more Kindle apps for toddlers that are just a dollar or two – even some of the best learning apps for toddlers on Amazon Fire. Check our even more choices here .
Best preschool apps for Kindle Fire
The best Kindle apps for 3 year olds and 4 year olds are engaging and stimulating without being overwhelming. For educational value, the best preschool apps for Kindle Fire focus on letters and numbers – even “read aloud” books are wonderful for this age!
Free Amazon apps for kids in early elementary school
There are tons of great Kindle Fire kids apps once your child is more independent with technology and starting to read! We love games that keep their minds active so they don’t just turn into little zombies – and the good news is that these are so fun that the kids beg to use them.
This is also a really good time to get acquainted with the parental controls available through Freetime (whether you pay for Unlimited or not). Here are the best kid apps for Kindle Fire that won’t cost you a penny – including some of the best free educational apps on Amazon:
Screen-free educational resources we love: PreK/K resources 1st grade resources 2nd grade resources
If your older child will be using a tablet at home, one of the best Kindle apps for kids is LEGO Life . It allows kids to use their LEGO creations to make stop motion movies! Our son has made such awesome movies that we even let him buy all the add-on features for a few dollars extra. It’s definitely one of the best Kind Fire apps for 6 year olds in our book.
Beyond the apps
There are tons of free apps that make the Amazon Fire tablet an excellent choice for kids – both for entertainment and education. But since this is the 21st century and we’re schooling on-the-go full time, we’ve started stretching our use of the Fire beyond just the screen and into add-ons that facilitate hands-on learning. Check out these two great options for elementary school and beyond:
![kindle fire educational apps kindle fire educational apps](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51RAnOsqNGL._SL250_.jpg)
This isn’t cheap, but if you have a budding master builder and a newer Amazon Fire tablet watch out . LEGO Boost takes building to the next level by allowing creative kids to mechanize and program their creations! We’ve been playing around with it for several months and give it high marks across the board. Read reviews on Amazon to see if it might be right for your family.
Osmo Genius Kit
![kindle fire educational apps kindle fire educational apps](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51lluu-hWGL._SL250_.jpg)
Want to turn your Fire tablet into an even better educational device? Check out Osmo! Ok, so what’s Osmo? It’s a system that includes a special base and sensor for your tablet along with manipulatives for several different learning games. The Genius Kit includes letters, numbers and tangrams (plus a few apps that don’t have dedicated tiles). You can also add the Creative Set for kids to learn animation or the Detective Agency geography game (my favorite, obviously). Get more details here.

do you think this would be good for an older kid – 8 or so who likes you tube and some games. My son has been using the worlds oldest ipad mini and its really on the fritz. the price of the fire is so attractive, but not sure if it has the storage for the games he likes.
I would buy the kids version for him for sure, but one of the top end ones would be great!

![kindle fire educational apps Our favorite educational apps for kindergarten for the Kindle Fire! | simplelivingmama.com](https://simplelivingmama.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/our-favorite-homeschool-apps.jpg)
My husband got a Kindle Fire for me last year. While I absolutely love it, I must say our kids have gotten the most use out of it. They use a lot of homeschool apps. My oldest is six and we are homeschooling kindergarten , so he is learning to read, so we mainly use phonics and reading apps for him. I want to share with you a few of our favorite educational apps for kindergarten.
Educational Apps for Kindergarten on Kindle
All of these educational apps are super fun for kids to use on the Kindle. My kids have especially enjoyed using most of them, especially coloring apps! We also really enjoy using apps to help with tracing letters and numbers, as well as beginning reading.
We currently use the free version of Starfall on our Kindle Fire. They are currently expanding the content, so there is not as much available as there is on the website, but there is enough that the kids stay entertained for a bit.
This app only cost 1.99 and I think it is well worth it. My kids adore this little monkey and they are learning to pair beginning sounds to words.
This is a free app that reads storybooks to your kids. It’s cute and fun when we are in a place where the kids need to sit and be quiet for a bit.
This is another free app that we use to help with handwriting practice.
This app is really fun for kids to work on solving Tangram puzzles.
Alphabet Preschool
This app is so fun. It includes coloring, memory games, and it also helps to introduce letter and number writing.
Kindergarten Vocabulicious
Kids learn sight words with this fun app. It works by using flash cards in which kids can match the words to the pictures.
ABCmouse.com
We have used and loved ABCmouse for years! I’m excited to see an app for the Kindle.
Coloring Pages for Kids
My kids love to do coloring pages on the Kindle. This one includes lots of pictures to choose from and several colors. This is great for helping kids develop fine motor skills.
Animal Math Games for Kids with Skills
Kids go on adventures with math explorer Emma! There are over 100 math games to choose from. Kids love the characters and voices.

Kindle Fire Apps for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 12 years or so (and if you have, hey, more power to ya! I bet it’s quiet under there. I’m sort of jealous!), mobile devices are all the educational rage. Tablets in particular are extremely useful in our children’s educational pursuits. And best of all, they’re portable.
Updated 6/28/2022
The Best Kindle Fire Apps for Toddlers & Preschoolers
We are a family who loves Apple products, but when it comes to tablets for our six kids we have gone strictly with Kindle Fire. Why?
-The price cannot be beaten! The base model Kindle Fire is under $70 !
-The Kindle Fire is a very durable tablet. The Fire is durable, but it’s not indestructible so we put protective cases on all of them. Our tablets are protected by a Kindle Fire Kid’s Case . We love these cases because they are super padded, have an adjustable carrying handle that doubles as a tablet prop, and they come in many fun colors.
-The Kindle Fire has exceptional parental controls. Block various features , password protect purchases, & set a curfew. You can also add your profile to your child’s tablet, allowing you to directly add content to your child’s account.
-Expand the Kindle Fire’s storage capacity with a micro SD card ! For around $20 you can more than quadruple the storage capacity of the device.

The Safe Vision app https://safe.vision is the BEST app ever! It allows parents to curate individualized playlists on YouTube & YouTube Kids! The best part? It’s free, though you’ll probably want to subscribe to the premium version. Visit Safe Vision here , visit Safe Vision’s listing in the Kindle Fire store , and read my review of Safe Vision here.
But wait! It’s never a bad idea to take a screen break and engage in some old-fashioned fun, this post has a great post about LEGO STEM activities for preschoolers !
PBS Kids allows my child to watch all of her favorite PBS shows (especially Daniel Tiger!) on her tablet, and I don’t have to worry about her accessing questionable shows. Her language and communication skills took a major leap when she started watching Daniel Tiger to boot.
Endless Alphabet is part of the Endless App Bundle from Originator, Inc. While there are many Endless apps available FOR FREE on the Kindle Fire, this one costs a couple bucks, worth every penny.
Sensory Baby is a great app that soothes sensory seekers and calms sensory avoiders through its interactive virtual fish aquarium. Sensory Baby also teaches young children the basics of using a touch screen tablet.
Netflix makes a great app for those who already subscribe! Set up a child’s profile from the computer then your child can navigate through shows that are safe for little eyes and ears. To keep your little one from straying into shows you don’t want them to watch, you can make use of Netflix’s download policy. Download some of their favorite shows, disable wifi, and feel comfortable walking away for a moment.
Did you know that Amazon Prime members get unlimited streaming on their Amazon Video platform? If you are an Amazon Prime member ( get a 30 day free trial here ) you can use Amazon Video to download safe shows for your child that they can watch without an internet connection.
LEGO Duplo Connected Train is my toddler’s absolute favorite app. There are quite a few fun Duplo apps to choose from. This app teaches animal sounds, colors, matching, and simple words.
Elmo Loves 123s is another paid app. Your child will love interacting with Elmo while learning their numbers and singing cute songs. Tip: Check the Sesame Street socials because the apps are free several times a year.
Dr. Panda – This cute suite of apps features an adorable panda who guides your child through the daily life of people in certain occupations. There are games for future chefs, mailpeople, doctors, among many other options.
Toca Lab – I’m a big fan of the Toca family of apps, but some have more educational merit than others. Toca Lab: Elements is one of my 4 year old’s favorites (her 11 year old brother likes it too!). In this periodic table game kids mix and match elements to all sorts of ends.
Pokemon Playhouse – My preschooler wants to be just like her older siblings, and Pokemon Playhouse helps her feel like a big kid. She is learning colors, shapes, numbers, and language skills as she hatches and raises Pokemon of her own!
Daniel Tiger’s GRR-ific Feelings – Kids have big feelings & it’s difficult but absolutely necessary to learn how to regulate our emotions. GRR-ific Feelings features children’s beloved Daniel Tiger teaching our kids how to calm down and think before acting and speaking.
Sesame Street Apps – There are so many great Sesame Street apps. Letters, numbers, manners, potty learning…
Teach Your Monster to Read – One of our very favorites for a long time, Teach Your Monster To Read puts kids in control of their learning to read journey. TIP: This is another one to watch socials to score for free.
Pirate Phonics – The Pirate suite is a much-loved pirate-themed learn-to-read program that consists of three separate, leveled apps.
Monkey Preschool Suite – The Monkey Preschool apps are colorful, fun, and full of stuff our kids need to know, and there are more than 9 apps to choose from.
Khan Academy Kids – From the ingenious creators of Khan Academy comes this cute app just for kids. Learn everything you need to know!
Sago Suite of Apps – Your child is sure to love the simple yet sweet animation style of these lifestyle-themed games. Your kids will feel grown up while they learn everything a preschooler needs to know.
Studio Pango Apps – These adorable apps feature cute animations and logic puzzles.
PinkFong Apps – Baby shark do do do do! Kids go nuts for these apps. Each app has a different theme, from numbers to music. The apps are free so you can download all of them without worry!
Sandra Boynton Story App – This four pack of interactive stories by acclaimed author Sandra Boynton, promises nothing but fun for those before bed stories. The Going to Bed book has been our favorite for 25 years.
Duck Duck Moose – Another fun series of apps, when it comes to fun & educational apps you really can’t beat Duck Duck Moose.
Shape Quest – From PBS Kids, kids race against robots to save their animals friends using logic and strategy.
Dragonbox Numbers – From one of the premier educational apps for algebra comes a version just for young kids.
Dragonbox Big Numbers – The sequel to Dragonbox Numbers

More great kindle fire apps for the classroom.
The Kindle Fire has emerged as the clear winner of the second-place prize for tablet supremacy. While it has not dethroned the iPad, the Fire has warranted careful consideration by educators.
In terms of incorporating the device into their lessons, one of the challenges educators have encountered is finding quality educational apps. While Apple has received accolades for its dedicated education area in the App Store, the apps area of Amazon (which produces the Fire) is still in its infancy when it comes to classroom relevance.
Thankfully, EducationWorld has done some of the work for you, combing through the listings of educational apps designed specifically for the Fire and highlighting some of the most noteworthy.
Here are our top picks:
![kindle fire educational apps Fire Kids Maps](https://www.educationworld.com/sites/default/files/FireKidsMapsApp1.jpg)
For each question, students see five flower pots. Every time they answer a question correctly, a pretty sunflower comes to life. If a player misses a question, she loses a flower. When kids bring five sunflowers to life through the power of math, they get a round of applause and a shimmering shooting star. Lose five flowers, and the game is over.
