'Writer' movie review: Samuthirakani delivers an impactful performance in a moving film

With the drama-thriller, debutant director franklin jacob joins the long list of exciting tamil filmmakers to watch out for.

Cops have been portrayed in several ways in Tamil cinema, but most of them have been over-the-top. Think of the Singam franchise, where Suriya's powerful punch sent half a dozen guys flying. Or the more recent Darbar that had Rajinikanth as a cop gone rogue.

Franklin Jacob's Writer also features a cop, Thangaraj, as its protagonist, but he is far removed from the cinematic cop universe. When we first see Thangaraj (Samuthirakani), he's seated in a police station in Thiruvembur, adjusting his glasses and reading the morning newspaper. An old Tamil film song 'Kavalai Illatha Manithan' plays in the background, probably pointing to the fact that Thangaraj is leading a life of contentment. But is he?

He is fighting for a cause - to establish a union among the police force, to ensure fair working hours - but Thangaraj is but a minor speck in the system. A tussle with his higher-ups ensures he is transferred to Chennai. Despite repeated instructions to stick to his job profile, Thangaraj gets inadvertedly caught in a case involving a college-going boy and other police officials. Can he, a humble writer, stand against the powers-that-be?

This might sound like a cliched storyline of a weak man taking on the system, but Writer packs in some solid material, especially in the second half. The biggest takeaway, of course, is the real-life-like depiction of the main characters. You could walk into any police station in your vicinity, and find characters like Thangaraj and company.

But that isn't the real triumph of Writer . Much like Malayalam film Nayattu , which also brilliantly showcased three cops on the run, Writer weaves an engaging storyline around the protagonist. There's a lot to like about Samuthirakani, who is very different from his earlier message-driven films. Caught in a system he detests but has gotten used to, he is sometimes clueless about what is really going on around him. Samuthirakani shines in these sequences; there's a sequence involving simmering tension between him and another cop, in which he conveys so much without uttering a single word. Most of the supporting cast put in solid performances too; Merku Thodarchi Malai Antony manages to infuse some humour in an otherwise serious subject, while Kavin Jay Babu impresses too.

There are minor missteps, like Devakumar (Hari Krishnan), the youngster pinned in the main case in the film, getting a flashback that is a tad longer than necessary. There are also a few pertinent points on caste that the film raises - no wonder since the film is produced by Pa Ranjith, well known for his fiery films and social statements. With Writer , debutant director Franklin Jacob joins the long list of exciting Tamil filmmakers to watch out for.

Writer movie review: One of the most important films of Tamil cinema, a polite answer to chest-thumping cop movies

Writer movie review: samuthirakani truly stands out as a policeman thrown to the sharks after 35 years of desk job..

Debutant director Franklin Jacob’s Writer will go down as one of the most important films of Tamil cinema. Cut from the same cloth as Vetrimaaran’s Visaranai and Jai Bhim , Writer shines the spotlight on a different aspects of the police department. Tamil cinema has always used police force as a medium to glorify its heroes without touching on their truly human side. Writer turns this trope on its head and gives us a protagonist who has been in police service for over 30 years but has never left the desk.

Head constable cum writer Thangaraj (Samuthirakani) is due for his retirement in a few months. In his police station in Trichy, everyone looks up to Thangaraj. He’s duty-bound but at the same time caring and pragmatic. He’s not the buff kind with a penchant working out and can barely run a few metres before gasping for breath. For years, Thangaraj has been working towards setting up a police union, despite facing stiff opposition from his department and seniors. When Thangaraj gets transferred to Chennai and crosses paths with Devakumar (Hari Krishnan), a Dalit-Christian PhD scholar, his life takes an unexpected turn.

Unlike most cop movies, Writer isn’t just about the corrupt police officers in the system, but also focuses on the cost some men in the force must pay for the recklessness of their seniors. As a line in the movie goes, ‘anyone without power in the force is a servant’. As much as Writer is about some power-abusing police officials, it also talks about the mental health of policemen and the constant pressure they’re under on a day-to-day basis. The film tries to humanize policemen instead of turning them into crime-fighting, never-tiring heroes. The film also addresses the issue of caste-based discrimination, a recurring theme in films headlined by Pa. Ranjith (who has produced this one), and one that deserves to be discussed more often and openly. Thankfully, this isn’t a film only about the men in the department. There’s a powerful subplot involving a female officer (Ineya) from a lower caste, aspiring to become a police horse rider.

Samuthirakani brings so much of life into the role of Thangaraj, and it’s a performance that truly stands out. He makes Thangaraj not a helpless police constable but one with a conscience, and I doubt if any other actor could’ve pulled off this character as effectively as him. Hari Krishnan as the helpless Dalit victim who’s retained without a reason is another performance that’ll stay with you for a while. The entire stretch involving his character is both haunting and heartbreaking. The helplessness that Hari Krishnan brings out through his performance will leave you gutted. Kavin Jay Babu as the north Indian Deputy Commissioner is the kind of villain Tamil cinema has rarely seen, and he’s brilliant from the first frame. His heavy Hindi-accented Tamil is the perfect icing on the cake his performance needed. Ineya, too, shines in a very important cameo.

Writer is the kind of film that goes beyond the meaning of entertainment, and it leaves you enlightened. It makes you question the very department that’s meant to protect us and be at our service.

Writer movie review: An insightful, unvarnished peek into the police force

Writer depicts an honest policeman’s mental health struggle like no other film – the introspection is real and honest.

If you think of cops in Tamil cinema, you are bound to hear Duraisingam bellowing, “Ongi adicha ondra ton weight da.” Or, Aaruchamy saying, “Naa police illa porukki.” You might even hear, “Thimiru dhan pudichavan thimiruke pudichavan” in the background. If you’re an ardent fan of Tamil cinema from the 80s, then a montage of Vijaykanth from various films should run in your mind’s eye. In an industry that is obsessed with larger-than-life heroes, the police force is often used to create brash, loud, messengers of justice.

However, Writer’s Thangaraj (Samuthirakani) is an unusual protagonist. In his thirty years on the force, he has never hit someone. He gasps for breath after running a few metres. He marries for the second time to become a father and gets mocked at his son’s school as the grandfather. Thangaraj is a normal, ordinary policeman. He wants to be of service, but he is also pragmatic. This means he returns a three-sovereign gold chain to a woman who lost a six-sovereign one, or otherwise, she would get nothing. He fights futile court cases for a Police union. As a writer, he is the fly on the wall. Until, he crosses paths with Devakumar (Hari Krishnan), a Dalit-Christian Ph.D. scholar who has been detained by the police for no apparent reason.

Writer unfurls as a lifestyle movie, more than a cop drama. It takes its time to establish the lives of Thangadurai and Devakumar. But, this is a necessity to understand the nuances of social authority, oppression, and the justice system. Franklin Jacob turns a questioning eye towards the police department which is notorious for its concentration of power.

There are some solid stretches of irony-soaked writing that are both grounded and revelatory. Take the stretch where Thangaraj is asked to fabricate a crime scene for an FIR, after dismissing another cop for writing a cliched one. The cops do extensive research and spin a tale complete with geographical markers. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kavin Jay Babu who is terrific) appreciates Thangaraj’s creativity as if he has written a novella. Hah!

In an introspective moment, Thangaraj says “Police la adhigaram la iladha elarume adiyal than. (In the police force, any officer without authority is a servant.) Authority breeds and forces silence; it abhors questions. ‘Edhuku unaku indha detail? (Why do you need this detail) is a constant refrain throughout the film. Writer reminds us of the importance of information – you fear until you are aware. The privileged retain power with them by keeping information away from the vulnerable. The law enshrines the rights of the vulnerable. But can you ever truly own it when the people in power make you believe justice is a mirage?

Writer’s flavoursome writing gets added momentum with a great ensemble of performances led by a compelling Samuthirakani. The actor-director nails the balance between Thanagraj’s awkwardness and reliability, also weaving in the head constable’s emotional vulnerability with the necessary flourishes. He is superbly aided by Merku Thodarchi Malai fame Antony, who plays the thief-turned-office help, Rajan. But I particularly loved Kavin Jay Babu who plays the North-Indian Deputy Commissioner who hits it out of the park with his casual villainy. Not to mention, the Hindi-accented Tamil was on point.

Writer only falters a bit in the final act where it stacks revelations one after another. (There is an Ineya cameo, which again brings a new perspective to light.) But even in these relatively weaker portions, the film has enough emotional gravitas to keep us hooked. The narratively which was resolutely realistic until then also takes a few cinematic leaps to give a hopeful, yet honest ending. People may die, but ideas do not.

Rating: 3.5/5

Pa Ranjith who has an eye for strong contents has bankrolled a new film titled Writer which stars Samuthirakani in the lead role. The film is directed by debutant Franklin Jacob and has music composed by Govind Vasantha. Does Writer address any important topic, leaving an impact? Read on! 

STORY : Writer follows the story of Thangaraj (Samuthirakani), a police constable/writer who tries to save Devakumar (Hari Krishnan), an innocent youth, from being convicted for a crime that he did not commit. Did Thangaraj fight against his own Police force to save Devakumar and did the mission end successfully is what Writer is all about. 

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES & DIRECTION:  With Writer, debut director Franklin Jacob explores a zone that was never tapped and he succeeds effectively in doing the same. The film showcases the hierarchical problems that happen in a Police Station among the officers and how the superior ones use their power to abuse someone. Writer also talks about the problems, pressure, and stress that the Police officials undergo and we have our protagonist who fights for a union for the police officers. One is not sure if there were any other Tamil films that touched this side of the police department. Kudos to Jacob Franklin and the team for the same. The writing is grounded and neat and director Jacob Franklin looks to be a filmmaker with a purpose.

Writer also raises the right kind of questions about many issues in society. Writer might have similarities with Visaaranai and Jai Bhim with regards to the idea about an oppressed being falsely framed for a crime, but the treatment in Writer is different. The approach is intense and the staging of scenes are also quite effective. While the first half of the film moves on an engaging note, certain issues pop up in the latter half. The flashback of Ineya seemed like a deviation and that could've been avoided. There are minor issues like these where the film doesn't hold you completely. The second half of Writer also has a few engagement issues.  

CAST:  Samuthirakani is in terrific form in Writer and he arrests us with a stellar performance that leaves a solid impact. He showcases his anguish and helplessness through his eyes and body language and he has surely upped the game as an actor. Hari Krishnan as the innocent ambitious youngster shines well earning the empathy of the audience. Kavin Jay Babu who played the DC in the film deserves applause for his intense performance and interesting dialect.

GM Sundar and Subramaniam Shiva are impressive in their respective roles. Antony, who played the ex-convict delivers a delightfully enjoyable performance that helps with some good laughs. Ineya, in a short-lived role, leaves a mark. 

TECHNICAL: Govind Vasantha's background music is commendable as it complements the intense mood of the film neatly. Pratheep Kaliraja's cinematography is to the point and there is no worry as such. The shot where Ineya confronts the DC with the horse deserves a mention. Though there are a few minor issues with regard to the edit, it doesn't fall as a major complaint. 

SO? Writer is a solid drama that brings out an unexplored side of the Police department! 

Applauses to Pa Ranjith for constantly backing quality projects and Writer is one more feather in his cap!

Verdict Samuthirakani shines in this gripping tale that leaves a good impact!

WRITER MOVIE REVIEW

Writer is an police drama written and directed by Franklin Jacob and produced by Pa Ranjith under the banner Neelam Productions, in association with Golden Ratio Films, Little Red Car Films and Jetty Productions. The film has Samuthirakani playing the role of a writer in a police station, while Harikrishnan, Dileepan, Ineya, GM Sundar and others play crucial supporting roles. 

Samuthirakani plays the role of Thangaraj, a writer in a police station, who also fights in the court for a union for police officers. This enrages his senior officer, who transfers him to Chennai. He is involved in framing an innocent youngster under the UAPA act, as a result of which his guilt gets to his head. Will he come out of it and save the youngster is what the story is about. 

Usually our police dramas that criticize the police department show the protagonist to be a good cop who always fights for the justice while the rest of the department, barring a couple of those standing by the hero, is corrupt. He would take on the mighty department single handedly and bring justice to victims. However, the writer inside Franklin Jacob says no to any of these tropes.

He chooses to focus on the most powerless people inside the police department and shows how they are all mere pawns in the bigger game. He accurately depicts the extent to which the department goes in order to save its image and serve the ruling classes, while the sub inspectors and constables face the wrath of both the public as well as the higher officials. Franklin Jacob also brings in an interesting perspective where he puts forth the idea that, if there is a police union, not only will the lower ranked police officers be benefitted, but the relation between the police and the public will also become friendly and better. 

The writing is supported ably by Samuthirakani and Harikrishnan's startling performances. It's rare to see a film where Samuthirakani speaks so less... with lesser dialogues. Instead, his eyes take the front seat here and what a performer he is. In the scenes towards the climax, the way he emotes after being traumatized by a shooting, at the same time reeling from the guilt of killing an innocent, the expression changes are done beautifully. 

On the other hand, Harilkrishnan brings out the pathos of his character and makes it resonate with the audiences. Actors like GM Sundar, Lizzie, Ineya and Dhileepan also chip in with useful contributions. Following films like Pariyerum Perumal and Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu, this is another solidly written, fairly engaging film from Neelam Productions. This shows how much scrutiny and editing the script would have gone through to become this tight. 

The music by Govind Vasantha and cinematography by Pratheep Kaliraja amplify the film and make sure that the director's vision is fulfilled. A sample for their collaborative work would be the scene where a woman on a horse confronts the DC while he's inside a car. Or even a death in the climax is more effective with their technical work.

Save your best for the last is something we hear often. It's not sure how many people follow that, but Writer, which was released in the last week of 2021, ends up as one of the best films this year. It doesn't portray the victims as people who surrender, but as people who revolt and resist. With lots of self-respect to the characters, the film's politics are also on point. Try not to miss it in theates!

Writer Movie Review: Crime, Punishment And Remorse Make The Crux Of This Film

My father died on board a Bangalore-Chennai Shatabdi train. And so the machinery ground into action. Because he was on a train, the Railway police had jurisdiction and they demanded a post mortem. And so I came into contact with the Bangalore City railway station's police writer, sitting at his desk inside the station on platform 6. 

I had to tell him the family situation, how and why my dad was on board the train. Basic, routine info.

He then read out his statement. He had turned my siblings and I – your regular everyday dysfunctional set of people, yes we loved and admired each other but that was just because we didn't know what else to do with each other – into something that Narnia will have a gag reflex with. More purple prose than on my first blog. We hadn't simply lost a father, the universe had conspired and fate had staged an elaborate drama to snatch from our lives all hope.

I mean, it was true. In degrees. Except to hear some policeman say this in the middle of a noisy and dusty railway station was a bit jarring. Absurd even.

This is what I remembered when I was trying to recollect my thoughts on Franklin Jacob's debut film, Writer . Produced by Pa Ranjith's Neelam production, starring Samuthirakani, Hari Krishnan, Ineya, Dileepan and others, Writer talks of police excess, a remorseless and impersonal system that punches down on the powerless, the daily struggle of those caught both inside the system and outside it and more.

It's hard to see a film and not immediately place it in the context of other films you've seen. Tamil cinema has always made films about policemen, and star cops. About those upright protectors of law. Oftentimes it is advertising and propaganda, sometimes good cinema. And then we have films like Visaranai, Jai Bhim, Kalathoor Gramam and Karnan . 

It's hard to not see a film in the context in which it is made and released. When everyday news tells us of police action against activists, those fighting to keep a powerful state accountable, and against the oppressed trying to simply identify their oppressors. In Salem, Toothukudi, Bombay, Bastar and New Delhi, every assertion of civic rights is met with police action. 

This is where Franklin Jacob's Writer sits. Thangaraj (Samuthirakani), the writer – a small powerless cog in the police machine, wants to be different. In an early scene he tells a protege that the Indian police force was created to serve the white colonialists, protect them against the people of the land. Later they continue to serve the powerful and the oppressors. He asks Arivazhagan (Dileepan) to be compassionate to the people he meets daily.

For most parts Thangaraj is. He fights for a union of the rank and file in the force, he tries to pay for his food and drink from local eateries. He attempts to do justice, in his limited capacity, to the cases and people he handles.

How this man becomes, inadvertently perhaps but still directly, the reason a young PhD student dies caught between the wheels of the police machinery, is the film.

Writer and director Franklin Jacob slowly builds this story up. Till pretty much two-thirds of the film, we don't know why Devakumar (Hari Krishnan) is arrested by the police. Or why there is so much pressure on the small frys in the system to close this case. 

We are set up for a backstory but then it's cleverly or perhaps cunningly, held back. Devakumar himself doesn't know what crime he has committed and so how can he reveal it to us? 

This isn't a crime thriller, so before long we find out what the crime is: an RTI application. Thangaraj has to piece this together. And he discovers his own role in why Devakumar is where he is. And this brings – at least for Thangaraj – the story full circle. 

And why I flashed back to the policeman on platform 6 of the KSR Bengaluru City railway station

The film tries to show the other side of Visaranai . Perhaps the other side of Jai Bhim . And has characters who could fit right into Karnan . It tries to talk about something none of these films have: the mental health of the people who have to carry out the state's dirty work. The people who are told, over and over again, just follow orders. 

Unfortunately, this is not a topic that is explored in much detail in the film. There's a glimpse of it – from Thangaraj's fight for a union. There's a passing mention of it to explain Devakumar's crime. And then we are presented with the story of Saranya (Ineya) and her fight against her bosses. 

We don't spend any time on any of these, which is a pity. We could have done with a little bit more depth to the tale of Saranya. Or explored why Devakumar wanted to study police officers and their mental health. 

But we get back to Thangaraj and his guilt. 

Right at the end, Thangaraj, now a prison inmate, begs forgiveness of Xavier, Devakumar's brother. Xavier doesn't know why, perhaps doesn't want to. But Thangaraj breaks down. And so Xavier gives in, and blesses Thangaraj.

Perhaps that is what this film is. A policeman's remorse – perhaps a police force's remorse?

Writer Movie Review: Many interesting ideas, but not quite a riveting film

There’s plenty interesting about Writer . It’s interesting that the protagonist is a middle-aged frail policeman, Thangaraj (Samuthirakani), who has somehow held on to his inherent goodness despite being an accessory to distortions of justice for decades. It’s interesting that the main victim of this film is a student, Devakumar (Hari Krishnan), and not just any student, but one who’s a PhD scholar and one who’s a Dalit-Christian. Thangaraj seems to have two wives, two very different women, and it’s interesting that the film doesn’t exactly care to expound on the how and why. Above all, it’s interesting that while films that have the police department in their crosshairs have conventionally pitted them against a do-gooder from the general public, this film’s protagonist is from within the system, someone, in fact, who is an integral part of it.

If I will go on to remember Writer , it will be largely for the characterisation of Thangaraj (Samuthirakani). A jaded writer in the police department, he is close to retirement and yet, he is an anomaly in a system of numb workers. He is perhaps a communist; he is keen to create a union for the employees that he hopes might ensure better treatment at work. I liked that this film cared as much, when it might have been easier to vilify them all. And yet, I wish this film had helped us understand a bit more about Thangaraj’s mental makeup. How has he retained that sliver of good conscience? How has he not sold out yet? For lack of any real exploration into who he is, we are left to speculate on some answers. Perhaps the arrival of a young policeman reminded him of who he once was? Perhaps the imminent end of his career has made him less gullible to systemic exploitation? Samuthirakani plays this character with frustration, fatigue, and pent-up anger. You see this all never more than when a boss, younger than him, slaps him early on in the film. And yet, these are but fleeting snapshots of this fascinating man.

Writer seems to have very many objectives to fulfil and doesn’t exactly seem perturbed about whether they emerge organically within its universe. It takes refuge in not one but two ungainly flashbacks to accomplish this. The second one in particular, about the humiliation and abuse of a woman cop, serves only to caricature and simplify the film’s antagonist, a DGP (Kavin Jay Babu, who I rather liked in the role). This power-drunk man comes across as rather complex and intelligent before the film simplifies him as a purely evil man prone to rage issues. The film, as I said, has one too many tasks to accomplish and doesn’t quite have the time to focus on portraits, either of the protagonist or this antagonist. It touches upon many interesting spaces, sure: the problem of hierarchy, the less-known problem of police suicides, the familiar victimisation of vulnerable communities, the symbiotic relationship of the police and the press, caste discrimination, women empowerment… It's a LOT. It’s all important, yes, but in the story of how writer Thangaraj emerges as a hero, they feel like incomplete explorations, for lack of the film being able to bring them together into an affecting whole.

And yet, there’s no denying that there’s a fascinating central message: About how all it takes to ruffle a powerful system is one man who feels discomfort at being an accessory to injustice. In a powerful conversation, a drunk Thangaraj calls his wife to express how uncomfortable he is when his conscience is disturbed. And indeed, isn’t that what truly defines a decent man? These are interesting times in Tamil cinema; these are interesting stories. Look at this film’s protagonist, Thangaraj. He’s not just approaching retirement age; he’s actively mocked for it. He’s physically frail, and he’s morally not exactly white either. He is a person trying to do better—in a sense, like our cinema. And films like Writer , even if they are imperfect steps, are still steps, I think, in the right direction.

An honest attempt.

Writer is a must-watch for touching upon the unexplored areas within the police force. We have never seen how a few cops in power treat those who are powerless in films but here debutant Franklin Jacob showcased this angle. Also, the reason behind the multiple suicides of cops in Tamil Nadu is another subplot that deserves our attention. (more)

Scathing indictment of Tamil cinema's obsession with hero-cop formula

Writer, in that regard, serves as a scathing indictment of Tamil cinema's obsession with valourising police excesses in films like Theri, Darbaar, the Singam trilogy or the many, many others that have come out over the decades. The lead police character isn�t played by a suave (often young) hero mouthing punch dialogues to justify his violence. Against this grain is an ageing Samuthrakani, deskbound, frequently winded for breath, unheroic, ethically compromised and grasping at straws to make amends. The film leaves us to decide whether or not he has found redemption, if it is even possible at all. (more)

An honest attempt that could have been made better

Portrayal of atrocities by the police in films is not new to us, yet this film gives us a different perspective by letting us encounter both good and evil policemen in the department. Composer Govind Vasantha deserves a special mention as his music helps to elevate the script. The other technical aspects could have been better, especially while handling a gritty narrative like this. (more)

Writer is a solid political film, that shows the weaker side of police deparment

Save your best for the last is something we hear often. It's not sure how many people follow that, but Writer, which was released in the last week of 2021, ends up as one of the best films this year. It doesn't portray the victims as people who surrender, but as people who revolt and resist. With lots of self-respect to the characters, the film's politics are also on point. Samuthirakani shines in this gripping tale that leaves a good impact!

Writer also raises the right kind of questions about many issues in society. Writer might have similarities with Visaaranai and Jai Bhim with regards to the idea about an oppressed being falsely framed for a crime, but the treatment in Writer is different. The approach is intense and the staging of scenes are also quite effective. While the first half of the film moves on an engaging note, certain issues pop up in the latter half. The flashback of Ineya seemed like a deviation and that could've been avoided. There are minor issues like these where the film doesn't hold you completely. The second half of Writer also has a few engagement issues. (more)

தமிழ் சினிமாவின் முக்கியமான இயக்குநர்களில் ஒருவராக மாறியிருக்கிறார் மாரி செல்வராஜ். இதுவரை அவர் இயக்கிய பரியேறும் பெருமாள், கர்ணன், மாமன்னன், வாழை ஆகிய நான்கு படங்களுமே மிகப்பெரிய ஹிட்டடித்தன. மேலும் வணிக ரீதியாக மட்டுமின்றி விமர்சன ரீதியாகவும் அவரது படங்கள் தொடர்ந்து கொண்டாடப்படுகின்றன. அதிலும் கடைசியாக அவரது இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான வாழை திரைப்படத்தை திரைத்துறையினரும், ரசிகர்களும் உச்சக்கட்டமாக கொண்டாடினார்கள்.

வணிக ரீதியாகவும் வெற்றி: வாழை படத்தை மாரி செல்வராஜே தயாரித்திருந்தார். முதலில் ஹாட் ஸ்டார் ஓடிடி தளத்தில் வெளியிடப்படுவதாக இருந்த வாழை தியேட்டர்களில் வெளியானது. கிட்டத்தட்ட 50 கோடி ரூபாய்க்கும் மேல் வாழை வசூலித்து வணிக ரீதியாகவும் ஹிட்டடித்திருக்கிறது. அதுமட்டுமின்றி விஜய் நடித்த GOAT படம் வெளியான பிறகும்கூட வாழை படம் திரையிடப்பட்டிருக்கும் சில தியேட்டர்களில் இன்னமும் ஹவுஸ் ஃபுல்லாக இருப்பது கவனிக்கத்தக்கது.

சாரு நிவேதிதா விமர்சனம்: இப்படி வாழை படம் விமர்சன ரீதியாகவும், வசூல் ரீதியாகவும் கொண்டாடப்பட்டிருக்கும் சூழலில் எழுத்தாளர் சாரு நிவேதிதா படத்தை கடுமையாக விமர்சித்திருக்கிறார். அவர் தனது வலைதள பக்கத்தில், "தாய்லாந்தில் லைவ் ஷோ என்கிற பெயரில் ஆணும் பெண்னும் உடலுறவு கொள்வார்கள். அதனை பலரும் கண்டு களிப்பார்கள். அப்படித்தான் வாழை படத்தில் வரும் டீச்சர் பூங்கொடி, மாணவன் சிவனணைந்தான் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட காட்சிகள் இருக்கின்றன. தாய்லாந்தில் நடக்கும் லைவ் ஷோவின் சாஃப்ட் வெர்ஷனாக வாழை இருக்கிறது.

பச்சை பொய்: சிவனைந்தன் எட்டாம் வகுப்பு மாணவன். வயது பதின்மூன்று. டீச்சர் பூங்கொடிக்கு வயது இருபத்து இரண்டு இருக்கலாம். பூங்கொடி ஒரு காட்சியில் பாவாடை தாவணியோடு வருகிறார். டீச்சரும் சிவனணைந்தானும் வரும் காட்சிகள் அனைத்திலுமே பாலியல் சமிக்ஞைகள் படு தீவிரமாக உணர்த்தப்படுகின்றன. என்னைப் போல் அது புரியாத அசடுகளுக்கு இசையமைப்பாளர் சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் தெள்ளத் தெளிவாக தன் இசையின் மூலம் அந்தப் பாலியல் சமிக்ஞைகளைப் புரிய வைத்து விடுகிறார். இயக்குனர் சூசகமாகச் சொல்ல நினைப்பதை இசையமைப்பாளர் நம் கண் முன்னே தூலமாக எடுத்துக் காண்பித்து விடுகிறார். நம் செவிகள் கேட்பதை கண்கள் புரிந்து கொள்கின்றன.

டீச்சரின் கர்ச்சீஃபை முகர்ந்து பார்க்கும் சிவனணைந்தான் பூங்கொடி என்ற பெயர் வரும் சினிமா பாடல்களில் தன்னை மறக்கிறான். இயக்குநர் மாரி செல்வராஜ் மாற்று சினிமா ஆர்வலர் என்பதால் அந்தக் காட்சியில் டீச்சரும் மாணவனும் பாடும் ஆடும் கனவுக் காட்சிகள் எதுவும் இல்லாமல் பார்த்துக் கொள்கிறார். ஆனால் சந்தோஷ் நாராயணனுக்கு அம்மாதிரி தடையேதும் இல்லை. அவர் செவிப்புலனுக்காக வேலை செய்பவர்" என குறிப்பிட்டு மேற்கொண்டு பல விஷயங்களை எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.

தங்கலான்: புரிந்ததும் புரியாததும் - ஓர் ஆழமான திரைப் பார்வை

இந்த ஆண்டின் முதல் ஆறு மாதங்களில் வந்த திரைப்படங்களில் ட்ரெய்லராக தலையில் வைத்துக் கொண்டாடப்பட்டு, திரைக்கு வந்த பின்பு கலவையான வரவேற்பைப் பெற்ற படங்களில் ‘தங்கலான்’ முதலிடத்தில் இருக்கிறது என்றால் மிகையில்லை என்றே நான் சொல்வேன். நடிகர் விக்ரமின் அசுர உழைப்புக்காக படத்தை கொண்டாட நினைப்பவர்களும் தங்களின் பாராட்டில் ஒரு ‘க்’ வைத்தே அதைச் செய்திருந்தனர். அந்த அளவுக்கு புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாத ஒரு படமா பா.ரஞ்சித்தின் ‘தங்கலான்? - விடை தேடலாம் வாருங்கள்.

ஒரு யதார்த்தம், ஒரு திரை அனுபவம் என இரண்டு நிகழ்வுகளை நினைவூட்டுவதலில் இருந்து இந்தக் கட்டுரையை துவங்க விரும்புகிறேன். முதலில் யதார்த்தம்: நாம் அனைவரும் துக்கம் மறந்த தூக்கத்தில் இருக்கும்போது, திடீரென உயரமான இடத்தில் இருந்து கீழே விழும் உணர்வு வர, நம்மை மீறிப் பதறி எழுந்து படுத்திருந்த இடத்தை தடவிப் பார்த்திருப்போம்... தரையிலோ, சமதளத்திலோ தான் உறங்கினோம் என்ற அறிவு இருந்தாலும், அந்தப் பதற்றம் எங்கிருந்த வந்தது. அந்த உணர்வின் பொருள் என்ன? இன்று ஹோமோ சேப்பியன்ஸ்களாக நாம் பரிணமித்து இருந்தாலும், அன்று காடுகளில் உலவி, மிருகங்களுக்கு பயந்து உயரமான மரங்களில் ஏறி அமர்ந்து உறங்கிய நமது எள்ளுப்பாட்டன்களின் கனவின் நீட்சி... கனிணி யுகத்திலும் கனவின் வழி தொடர்கிறது. நினைவு வழி நீட்சியே இந்த சமூக கட்டமைப்பு என்பதன் நிஜம்!

திரை அனுபவம்: விக்ரமின் வித்தியாசமான நடிப்பில் ‘பிதாமகன்’ திரைப்படம் வெளியாகியிருந்த நேரம். இன்றுள்ளது போல் சமூக ஊடக வளர்ச்சி இல்லாத காலம் அது. என்றாலும் படத்தின் துவக்கத்தை சுடுகாடு ஒன்றில் குழந்தை பிறப்பதில் இருந்து தொடங்கியதற்காக படத்தின் இயக்குநர் பாலா வெகுவாக கொண்டாடப்பட்டிருந்தார். படத்தில் வெகுமக்களால் கவனிக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு விஷயம் ‘கஞ்சா குடுக்கி’ (கஞ்சா கறுப்பு) என்ற பாத்திரத்தின் தொடர் இருப்பு. படத்தின் தொடக்கத்தில் கதை நாயகன் ஊருக்குள் வரும்போது ‘அண்ணே இன்னும் கொஞ்ச நாள்ல என்னை அங்க கொண்டு வந்துருவாங்க... எரியும் போது முருக்கி எந்திருச்சா அடிக்காத. அதட்டுண்ணே நானே படுத்துப்பேன்...’ என வசனம் பேசும் கஞ்சா குடுக்கி, படத்தின் இறுதி வரை ஏதோ ஒருவகையில் இருந்து கொண்டே இருக்கும்.

அன்று, விளிம்புநிலை மக்களை காட்சியாக்கும் பாலாவின் திரைப்படங்களில் சின்னக் கதாபாத்திரத்தின் நீட்சி சிறந்த திரைக்கதையாக்கமாக சிலாகிக்கப்பட்டது. விக்ரமின் அசுர நடிப்பு, சூர்யாவின் மாற்றம், லைலாவின் சிணுங்கல், கவர்ச்சி காட்டாத சிம்ரனின் நடன வரிசைகளுக்கு மத்தியில் கஞ்சா குடுக்கியை உற்று நோக்கிய தமிழ் சினிமா ரசிகன், தங்கலானில் தனது திரை ரசனையை நீட்டிக்கத் தவறிவிட்டானோ என்றே தோன்றுகிறது.

இனி தங்கலான்... கோலார் தங்க வயல் தமிழர்களின் கதை என ஏற்கெனவே சொல்லப்பட்டுவிட்டதால் கதை தொடங்குவதே 19-ம் நூற்றாண்டில்தான். அரசர்கள் காலத்தில் கொள்ளுப் பாட்டன்களுக்கு முந்தைய பாட்டன் ஒருவன் பெற்றுத் தந்த நிலத்தை வரி வஞ்சத்தால் இழந்த வட ஆற்காடு மாவட்டத்தின் ஒரு பூர்வகுடியான தங்கலானில் இருந்தே கதை ஆரம்பமாகிறது. இழந்த நிலத்தை மீட்க தங்கலான் தன் எள்ளுப்பாட்டனின் தடம் தொடர்ந்து கோலாரில் தங்கம் தேடி அலைந்து கண்டடைகிறான். தங்கலான் தேடி அடைந்த தங்கம் என்ன என்பது இயக்குநர் பா.ரஞ்சித் சொல்ல வந்த இந்திய வரலாறு மூடி மறைத்து வைத்திருக்கும் நிஜ முகம்.

நினைவின் நீட்சியே வரலாறு! - சரி தங்கலானுக்கு கோலாரில் தங்கம் இருப்பது எப்படித் தெரியும்? - இந்தக் கேள்விக்கான விடையாக படம் சொல்லும் நிஜம் நினைவுப் பெட்டகத்தில் புதைந்து கிடக்கும் கதைகள். அறுத்து அடித்த நெல்லுக்காக களத்தில் குடும்பத்துடன் காவலிருக்கும் தங்கலான், தன் குழந்தைகளுக்குச் சொல்வது முகம் தெரியாத பாட்டனின் தங்கம் தேடி அலைந்த கதையைத்தான். அது முதல் முறையாகச் சொல்லப்படும் கதை இல்லை. அதற்கு முன்பே அந்தக் கதை பலமுறை சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனாலும் திரும்பத் திரும்பச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது. தெரிந்த கதைதான் என்றாலும் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் சொல்லப்படும் புராண இதிகாச கதைகளைப் போல, மக்களை தெய்வம் மறக்காமல் இருக்க, மக்கள் தெய்வத்தை மறக்காமல் இருக்க வருடம் தோறும் நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டப்படும் கொடை விழாக்களைப் போல.

மெட்டிலா பாடல்கள்: அப்படியென்றால், அது ஒரு தகப்பன் தன் குழந்தைகளுக்கு வெறும் கதை கூறும் நிகழ்வு மட்டும் இல்லை. அதுவொரு கொண்டாட்டம். கதை வழி வரலாற்றை பாதுகாத்து கடத்தும் குடும்பக் கொண்டாட்டம். தங்கலான் தனது குழந்தைக்கு சொன்னதைப் போல அவனுக்கும் அந்தக் கதை பலமுறை சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் கொண்டாட்டமாக சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அதனால்தான் தங்கத்தின் தடத்தை அலையும் போது சிக்கித் தவிக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் வழித்தடத்தின் குறிப்புகளை ஏட்டில் இருந்து இல்லாமல் தன் நினைவுப் பேழையில் இருந்து மெட்டுக்கள் இல்லாத பாடல்களாக மீட்டெடுக்கிறான். ஒருவேளை தங்கலான் இதைச் செய்யாதிருந்தால் அவன் மகன் அசோகனுக்கு வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தால் அவனும் தந்தையைப் போல நினைவின் வழி தங்கத்தின் தடம் தேடி பயணித்திருப்பான். காரணம் அது வரலாற்றின் நீண்ட பாதை.

வெள்ளைக்காரன் தேடிய அறிவு: தங்கலானுக்கு குடும்ப வழி கதையாக தங்கத்தின் தடம் தெரிகிறது. அதைத் தேடி எடுக்க நினைக்கும் வெள்ளைக்காரருக்கு அந்தக் கதை எப்படித் தெரிந்தது. பதில், அவருக்கு முன்பு வந்தவர்கள் எழுதி வைத்தக் குறிப்புகள். அந்தக் குறிப்புகள்தான் தங்கத்துக்காக தங்கலானைத் தேடி வர வைத்திருக்கிறது. அது வெறும் கூலிகளுக்கான தேடல் மட்டும் இல்லை. கூலிகள் தான் வேண்டுமென்றால் ஆட்சி அதிகாரத்தில் இருந்த வெள்ளையர்களால் அவர்களை எந்த ஊரில் இருந்தும் பெற்றுவிட முடியும்.

ஆனால், அவர்களை வடஆற்காடு நோக்கி தங்கலானைத் தேடி வர வைத்தது எது? பரம்பரை பரம்பரையாக கதைகள் வழி கடத்தப்பட்டு வந்த அறிவின் நீட்சி.. தங்கம் இருப்பதை உறுதி செய்து விட்டு கூடுதல் ஆட்களுக்காக கிராமத்துக்கு வந்து தங்கலான் பேசும் வசனங்கள் மிகவும் முக்கியமானவை. ‘அந்த வேலையைச் செய்ய நம்மள விட்டா இந்த ஜில்லாவிலேயே ஆட்களே இல்லையா(ம்)... நம்ம தான்... நம்மால மட்டும் தான் தங்கத்தை தேடி எடுக்க முடியுமா(ம்)’ - இது வெறும் ஆசை வார்த்தைகள் இல்லை தங்கம் இருக்கும் வழித்தடம் மட்டும் இல்லை. அந்த உலோகம் குறித்த அறிவும் வழிவழியாக கடத்தப்பட்டிருக்கிறது என்ற வரலாற்று உண்மையின் நிஜம். தோல் பதனிடுதல், அதைக் கொண்டு இசைக் கருவி செய்தல், சுண்ணாம்பு கல் எடுத்தல் என பூர்வக்குடிகள் செய்ய எல்லா வேலைகளுக்கு மிகப் பெரிய உலோக, வேதியியல் அறிவு தேவைப்பட்டது.

தொடர்ந்து வந்த குறுவாள்: நான் படம் பார்த்த பல பேரிடம் கேட்டு அனைவரும் அப்படியா என கேட்ட ஒரு விஷயம் தங்கலானின் குறுவாள். சிங்க முக கைப்பிடி போட்ட அந்தக் குறுவாள் தங்கலான் பார்த்திருக்காத, பார்த்திருக்கவே முடியாத அவனின் முகமறியா முப்பாட்டனுக்கு சோழ அரசன், தங்கம் தேடிக் கொடுத்ததற்காக பரிசாக தந்தது. அது தங்கலானுக்கு எப்படி கிடைத்தது என்ற சின்னக் கேள்வியை தமிழ் சினிமா ரசிகன் கேட்டிருந்தால் படம் ஒட்டு மொத்தமாய் புரிந்திருக்கும். குறுவாள் என்பது இங்கே ஒரு குறியீடு. வழிவழியாக கடத்தப்படும் கொண்டாட்டம், வலி, வரலாறு, அறிவின் குறியீடு. தங்கலான் தங்கம் என்றக் குறியீட்டை கொண்டு பூர்வகுடிகளின் நினைவின் வரலாற்றைத் தேடி அலை முயன்றிருக்கிறது. இன்று நமக்குக் கிடைக்கும் தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களில் பல இப்படி பரம்பரை பரம்பரையாக கடத்தப்பட்டு தொகுக்கப்பட்டது என்பதே வரலாற்று உண்மை.

வரலாற்றை திரும்பிப் பார்க்க அச்சமா? - தங்கத்தை தேடி செல்வதுதான் கதை. அதன் வழியாக படம் பல வரலாற்று உண்மைகளைப் பேசுகிறது. தங்கலான் குழந்தைகளுக்குச் சொன்ன கதையின் வழியாக தங்கம் தேவைப்பட்டது சோழ ராஜாவுக்கே, தங்கலானின் தாத்தாவுக்கு இல்லை. தங்கத்துக்காக ராஜா எதையும் செய்யத் தயாராக இருந்தார். அதற்காக தாத்தா உழைக்கத் தயாராக இருந்தார். அதற்காக அவர் கேட்டது தன் கூட்டத்தாருகான அடிப்படைத் தேவையை (உழைக்க நிலம்). ஆனால் இருவருக்கும் இடையில் அறம் கூறி ஓர் அந்தணர் இடைமறித்தார். தங்கலானின் கதையில் தங்கம் வெள்ளைக்காருக்கு தேவைப்பட்டது. அதற்காக தன் கூட்டத்தாருடன் தங்கலான் உழைக்கத் தயாராக இருந்தான். பதிலாக அவன் கேட்டது நியாயமான கூலியும் மரியாதையும். தங்கலானைக் கட்டித்தழுவிக் கொண்டாட வெள்ளையர் தயாராக இருந்த போதும், இடையில் நின்று மரித்தது அந்தணனின் காலமாறுதலான தூபாஷி (மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர்). இருவரின் கையிலும் ஒரு கோல் இருக்கும். தங்கலான் பூர்வகுடிகளின் அறிவின் நீட்சியின் வரலாற்றை மட்டும் கதை வழி தேடி அடையவில்லை. அவர்கள் வீழ்த்தப்பட்ட வரலாற்றையும் சேர்த்த படம் பேசுகிறது. “நாம் கொடுத்தனவும், நம் அக்கன் கொடுத்தனவும், நம் பெண்டுகள் கொடுத்தனவும், கொடுப்பார் கொடுத்தனவும்...” என சோழனின் பெருந்தன்மையைப் பேசி பேசி கொண்டாட விழையும் தமிழ்ச் சமூகம், அவ்வரசர்கள் தானம் செய்ய வல்லப மங்கலங்களை (அந்தணர்களுக்கு தானமாக வழங்கப்பட்ட ஊர்) திரும்பிப் பார்க்க அச்சப்படவே செய்கிறது.

படம் சொன்ன வரலாற்று நீட்சிகளில் முக்கியமானவை: சைவ அரசனான சோழன் தங்கத்துக்காக எதையும் செய்யத் தயாராக இருந்தார். அதற்காக ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட சமூகத்தவருக்கு படைத் தளபதி பதவியும் கொடுக்கத் தயாராக இருந்தார். காலத்தின் தேவைக்காக ஒடுக்கப்பட்டவர்களில் சிலரை நாயன்மார்களாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டாலும் உண்மையான விடுதலையைத் தரவில்லை. வரலாற்று சாட்சி நந்தன். பெருமணலெல்லாம் தங்கமாக இருந்தாலும் அது எடுத்த மக்களுக்கு மறுக்கப்பட்டது.

வைகுண்டத்தில் இடமுண்டு எனக் கூறி அதிலுள்ள ஒரு சமயப் பெரியவரால் பூணுல் போடும் சலுகையைப் பெற்றுத்தந்த வைணவமும் முழுமையான விடுதலையைத் தரவில்லை. வைகுண்ட தோற்றம் காட்டி மின்னி உள்ளுக்குள் பாறையாக இறுகிப்போய்தான் இருந்தது. வெள்ளையானுக்காக தங்கலான் கூட்டத்தார் தோண்டிய தங்கப்பாளங்கள் போல.

இவை தவிர தன் கூட்டத்தாரை தங்கம் எடுக்கத் தங்கலான் கூட்டி வந்ததும், வெள்ளையர் பேசுவதும், அதை தூபாஷி மொழி பெயர்க்கும் காட்சி. வெள்ளையரின் பேச்சை தூபாஷி வேண்டுமென்ற வளைத்துக்கூறும் போது, தங்கலான் அதை மறுத்து, சரியாக தன் கூட்டத்தாரிடம் எடுத்துக் கூறுவார். இந்த மண்ணுக்கு வரும் எல்லா புதியனவும் தங்களால் மட்டுமே புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும் என்ற உணர்வுக்கு தங்கலான் மூலம் ஒரு சாட்டையடி விழுந்திருக்கும். வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தால் புதிய மாற்றங்களை எல்லோராலும் உள்வாங்க முடியும் என்பதற்கு இந்தக் காட்சி ஒரு சாட்சி. ஒருவகையில் ஆரியத்துக்கும், பவுத்தத்துக்குமான போரை இந்திய வரலாறு என்ற பாபாசாகேப் அம்பேத்கரின் கூற்றே இந்தப் படம்.

இயக்குநர் ரஞ்சித் தேர்ந்த திரை மொழி யின் மூலம் பிரச்சாரம் இல்லாமல் இந்தப் படத்தை அணுகி, தான் சார்ந்திருக்கும் சினிமாவுக்கு நேர்மை செய்திருக்கிறார். ‘கபாலி’யிலும், ‘காலா’விலும் நாயக பின்பத்துக்காக செய்த பிரச்சாரங்களைப் போல இந்தப் படத்தில் செய்வதற்கு வாய்ப்புகள் இருந்தும், அதை தேர்ந்த திரை மொழி மூலம் நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டி தன்னை தேர்ந்த கலைஞனாக நிலைநிறுத்தியிருக்கிரார்.

என்றாலும், தான் கூறவந்த பூர்வகுடிகளின் கதையில் அவர்களின் கஷ்டங்களை மிகவும் மேலோட்டமாகவேச் சொல்லிச் சென்றிருக்கிறார் பா.ரஞ்சித். வெறும் சாதி பெருமை பேசும் படங்களில் கூட அங்கு பெண்களின் இழிநிலை இலை மறைக்காயாக காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கும். அத்தகைய உண்மைகளுக்கு இந்தப் படத்தில் இடமில்லை என்பது ரஞ்சித்தின் மாபெரும் சறுக்கலே.

படம் பார்த்த பெரும்பாலனவர்கள் சொன்னது ஆரத்தி புரியவில்லை, குழப்புகிறாள் என்பதே. வெறும் வலிகளின் கதைகளாக மட்டும் ஒரு தொன்மத்தை நாம் கடத்திக் கொண்டு வந்து விடமுடியாது. அதில் சில சாகசங்களுக்கும் இடம் வேண்டும். அப்படியான தொன்மத்தின் தொடர்ச்சியே ஆரத்தி. ஹாரிப்பாட்டரை, அதில் வந்த கனவுகள் கதைகள், மாயா ஜாலங்கள், அமெரிக்க மண்ணின் சூப்பர் நேச்சுரல் கதாயநாயகர்களை எல்லாம் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடிந்த தமிழ்சினிமா ரசிகர்களை ஆரத்தி குழப்புகிறாள் என்பது நகை முரணே!
