We are said to be the hope of the future of our nation. How is that possible if one of the biggest problem we are facing right now is education? Many children nowadays are no longer attending school because of poverty. Instead of studying, they are forced to work to help provide for their family. You can see anywhere around, children begging for money, selling sampaguita on the streets, and they are now involved in crimes. They are taught to do bad things in order to survive, and education is being ignored.

However, there is too much violence in our surroundings right now that we may want to question whether our youth are seeing good role models to emulate in the future. Conflicts in and out of the country are reported on the news day in and day out – without fail. Divorce is common, leaving behind young kids without both parents to guide and mold them as they grow up.
A Teen Summit exploring violence-related issues and other youth topics will be held April 1 at noon at the Booker T. Washington Center, 1720 Holland St . The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Mothers Against Teen Violence, an Erie-based anti-violence group founded in 2010 by community activist Sonya Arrington, in partnership with the Youth Leadership Institute of Erie. “This is a platform for our youth to be heard,” Arrington said. The forum will address issues of bullying, peer pressure, and violence, drugs and alcohol abuse. The goals is to empower the youth and let them know that help is available whenever they ask for it. “I want the youth in our community to know that they do have a voice and that we, as adults, are listening to their concerns,” Arrington said. “Our youth need to know there is help in the community to help get them through these traumatic events with all the violence. There is help.”

Many fail to realize that the youth are still kids and need proper guidance. They have different needs as they grow up and it is the responsibility of their parents and guardians to be sensitive to their needs and extend a helping hand when needed. Remember that things can even spiral out of control once the youth hits puberty and the delicate juggle act starts and persist throughout their lifetime.
From the beginning, some of us can be labelled “different,” separated from the flock and taken aside to receive special treatment. In some ways, it can make things all the more inconvenient. Children are astute at perceiving the difference and can be especially harsh, forming elites and teasing their classmates; the kids who fall victim to this treatment may experience future problems as teenagers. As we become older, a whole new world opens up; we understand so much more, for better or worse. Teens will make the transition from elementary to high school, and it can be very stressful trying to balance grades and a social life. As each year goes by, there seems to be no going back. School can be fast-paced and if you do not understand something the first time it may be difficult to get a second explanation. And there are also things we are not taught, such as how to manage money, pay taxes or plan for the future. These are the things left to our parents to teach us, or for us to figure out on our own.

Youth can become a force to empower each other instead of pulling each other down. Imagine a world where every person wants the other to grow and become better. This is why we believe in the power of togetherness and unity. The youth must possess this very quality to be a force to bring a change in the society that they live in and build a strong nation together.
4. Why is it necessary for the youth to be goal-oriented?
When you are goal oriented then you become very clear about vision and mission. Goals make and contribute towards one’s purpose. The true way to find your purpose in life is by trying new things every day and finding what your true calling is. By becoming goal-oriented, people can achieve great things and become stronger and get an idea of their purpose. The youth has the right motivation and the drive to achieve unimaginable things. That is why, when they become goal-oriented, they can easily find their true calling, become powerful and successful, and help other people.
5. What are some important responsibilities of the youth?
The youth must have responsibilities like being goal-driven, zealous, and respectful. People in their youth must know how to make definite decisions that are well thought and not hurried. Lastly, the youth must be disciplined and should understand the importance of time.

Who are the youth of today generation unlimited, we have approached several young people to understand their vision and how they look at the society they live in and make it their own, from each one perspective.

Being young is a synonym of change, progress and future. Being young is, ultimately, facing challenges and creating or recreating a space for future full development. It means turning problems into opportunities and solutions and being the driving force of society.
Today, on the International Youth Day 2020 , we celebrate their visions and their choices, we celebrate “Youth Engagement for Global Action”, a slogan that seeks to highlight the ways young people engage at the local, national and global levels.
Global challenges, like the coronavirus pandemic or climate change, as well as local issues, will have an effect on the future. It is time to see the extent to which this affects the youngest population and to advance solutions. People aged 14 to 29 years represent the largest generation in history.
We reached out to several Cuban youngsters to know about their visions, their roles in society as individuals and part of the population. From their individuality’s point of view, these young people look at the society in which they have to live and how to make it their own. They were posed with two questions, to which they had shared responses. What do you think is the role of young people these days? What are you doing from your position to help young people?

Magdany Acosta Gallardo, 18 years old
Young people not only represent the future of our country, we are one of society’s main agents of change and progress. We have a great effect on economic development too. In this stage of our lives, we build many social relationships and develop a personality that defines us as a new generation. What we do when we become adults depends on how we think and act today.
Yaicelín Palma Tejas, 27 years old
Young people only have one role and is the same they have always had. It does not change, because their role is actually changing everything, doing things better than before and injecting them with joy and energy.
Being a journalist, I think my contribution as a champion of young people is to highlight our role as agents of change. As a young citizen, I join every call for autonomy and emancipation, which are challenges for everyone across the globe.
Carlos Alejandro Sánchez, 22 years old
I think young people play a crucial role today no matter the society they live in. We are the ones transforming, consciously or not, our reality, either at the university, at our workplace or in other spaces, and we do it by contributing with a new and updated vision to daily activities. It is our responsibility to make society evolve and stand up for our opinions in the best possible way.
The opportunity of appearing in the media through radio or television every day, in addition to my presence in social networks, which are so popular nowadays, has undeniably helped me to convey messages and show my way of thinking to many more people than usual. Being able to have a positive influence on my generation and on others through my words and actions makes me very proud. For example, hosting a news programme or a show aimed at a young audience is a huge responsibility, but it has allowed me to prove that no matter how young you are, if you want something and are willing to fight for it, you can do it because everything in life is about perseverance and attitude.
Roxana Broche, 25 years old
Young people are the cornerstone of society and represent a generational renewal. This is something that has been said so many times, but the reality is that young people are the ones in charge of building a legacy.
As an actress, I think I can share my life and professional experiences to help and inspire young people, without saturating them with the message. The more one talks about life experiences, the more knowledge one can offer, and I think that is a key element, sharing knowledge so that other people can reuse it.
Anthony Bravo, 20 years old
I am lucky to be a young singer, but you also have a big responsibility when you have a voice; that is why my work at this time has been focused on conveying messages of wellbeing and trying to reproduce behaviours that contribute to personal growth which, in turn, drives a collective creation based on principles that put the fate of society before the fate of individuals. The best way to contribute with something positive to the community is to ensure our own wellbeing; humanity starts with the family.
Through my music, my lyrics, also as a design student and even as an active subject in our country, I’ve taken on as my duty to be a spokesman for ideas that I think are useful. I have put my time and ideas at the service of my generation.
Luis Daniel del Riego Carralero. 16 years old
At our age, our role in the world is to carry out some important functions for our society and eventually become responsible adults, committed to our time. For example, there are young people who are leading and paralyzing the world in a long fight against the lack of action of some to avoid global warming. We have proven that we can offer a better future and that we are willing to fight against all odds to achieve that.
Leslie Alonso Figueroa, 27 years old
Young people have the challenge, without forgetting the past, to fight for a fair world. Phobias and discrimination, male chauvinism, gender violence and racism are some of the challenges to overcome. Young people, from their area of actions, study or workplace must fight together in the ultimate pursuit of societies of rights, with everyone’s help and for everyone’s good.
My job as a communicator and a professor is marked by the challenges of the world’s youth which are our challenges as well. We are all living and coexisting in the same place where forces such as climate change or the new coronavirus make us rethink our strategies and roles to build the future we need.

In my opinion, the role of young people nowadays is to be very productive and, even though there are some who may not find a specific purpose, I’m sure there are many who are able to fulfil their dreams, accompanied by music, dance, performing, communication and other artistic manifestations. All that is what I can see in a place like the Centre A+ Espacios Adolescentes, a programme that provides the opportunity to explore creative capacities and to which I feel lucky to belong!
In my case I had the chance to host radio shows as a way to reflect the different concerns of boys and girls who feel identified with the contents because we address topics of interest and skills that are useful to adolescents, young people and families in general to build together the society we want.

Youth inspire hope at the United Nations
1,250 university students from around the world submitted 2000 word essays in a language other than their native tongue and different from the language of their studies in a contest co-sponsored by the United Nations Academic Impact and ELS Educational Services Inc., a major source of language instruction and the teaching of English as a second language. The seventy winners from 43 countries were organized into six groups based on the six official languages of the United Nations to prepare and present two-minutes speeches on themes related to the post-2015 global development agenda.
These themes included: (1) to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and life-long learning opportunities (2) healthy lives and well-being for all (3) promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all (4) promote peaceful, inclusive, just and accountable institutions and communities (5) ensure the availability of and sustainable management of potable water and sanitation for all and (6) end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
Note the emphasis on inclusiveness and sustainability, elements in a culture of peace and nonviolence. Peace is, after all, not only the absence of violence but also the presence of conditions for human development. There can be no peace without economic development, no economic development without community development, and no community development without the opportunity for education. This is public policy as if people matter.
The 70 students in the Many Languages, One World International Essay Contest and Global Youth Forum each commented on these themes as a member of a team speaking the same language in the Great Hall of the General Assembly. They were poised, articulate, passionate, and engaging. They spoke as if we are guests on this planet Earth and must be its guardian.
As I listened to these multi-linqual students, who are studying in many different fields, architecture and anthropology, engineering and economics, physics and philosophy, comment on these urgent issues, I was impressed by how sensitive they were to the roles and responsibilities of individuals, community organizations, governments, and the private sector. I found this sensitivity to these four pillars of progress in any society to be in sharp contrast to that shown by many pundits and politicians whose ideological inclinations give unbalanced attention to this quartet, especially by those who deny the purpose and role of government.
While it is certainly true that governments cannot solve all problems, it is equally true that the market system cannot do so either. Each society must offer a safety net as well as support opportunities for individuals to advance through schooling available to all and not limited to those who by chance are born into wealth. These students seem to understand the interdependence between the rule of law that supports the public good and the private gains that result from entrepreneurial as well as public investment.
With these young people as future world leaders, I have renewed optimism about the fate of our species. Their intelligence, values, and passion give me hope as long as we adults give them the chance to fulfill their plans, which will benefit us as well as their children.

The Power of Young People as Changemakers

“The power of youth is the common wealth for the entire world. The faces of young people are the faces of our past, our present and our future. No segment in the society can match with the power, idealism, enthusiasm, and courage of the young people.” – Kailash Satyarthi
The headmaster at the first high school I taught at believed youth have rich perspectives and must be heard and heeded, and that teachers must listen, learn from them, and provide guidance. The motto was, ‘Forget tomorrow, let the young lead today!’
The school gave prefects, club committees, and sports captains the opportunities and freedom to exercise their duties with virtually no interference from the teachers, who would provide guidance and mentorship, only stepping in with solutions when requested or when absolutely necessary. As someone new to the teaching field, the idea of giving so much power to student leaders was foreign to me: I was concerned they were too young to take on that responsibility.
What an error – the younger ones cleared my doubt: they were instrumental in building a school culture envied across the province. Since then, I still believe and am confident that youth are not merely participants but changemakers that hold the key to building peace for current and future generations.

I had the golden opportunity of working with resourceful, convergent thinkers, dependable prime movers and backers of school activities, innovative and driven model leaders. Some may say that youth leadership at the school-level is possible and expected, but when it comes to leading in socio-economic and political development, youth are too young to take that leap.
Youth and power have always been a difficult relationship. According to a recent Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) report , the leadership of younger people – though still low in official positions – is rising: 1.9% of the world’s Members of Parliament (MPs) are aged under 30 (up from 1.6% in 2014). Furthermore, 14.2% of the world’s MPs are aged under 40 (up from 12.9% in 2014).
Given these statistics, it is not surprising that I have repeatedly heard youth ask themselves, “What is this power we have? How can we experience ‘ execution of youth power ?’” While we are seeing younger leaders with political and economic titles, it would be a mistake to think that this is the only level at which they can wield influence and initiate needed change. Bringing about change does not require a badge or a title. Youth leave footprints of change in their communities.

The world has long associated youth with risk-taking and recklessness. They have been lumped into the created and accepted stereotypes of an inherently bad generation – troubled and troublesome with the news awash with negative portrayal.
Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” Young people are neither problems to be solved nor merely just part of the solution: as changemakers, they can influence outcomes and achieve real change! All we have to do is encourage and mentor them, then give them the space to do it.
A range of UN resolutions recognise this need to view youth as changemakers. Unanimously adopting Resolution 2419 (2018), the UN Security Council called on all relevant actors to consider ways to increase the representation of young people when negotiating and implementing peace agreements, recognising that their marginalisation is detrimental to building sustainable peace and countering violent extremism. Meanwhile, UNSCR 2250 (which was passed three years ago yesterday) recognises not only that “today’s generation of youth is the largest the world has ever known,” but also that “youth should actively be engaged in shaping lasting peace and contributing to justice and reconciliation, and that a large youth population presents a distinctive demographic bonus contributing to lasting peace and economic prosperity if inclusive policies are in place.”
Over the past eleven years, Generations For Peace has demonstrated the power of youth by engaging thousands of young people in communities around the globe. Changing the world does not start with the world, but with individuals!

As a GFP Pioneer Facilitator, we train young people, encouraging and mentoring them to build the world they want to live in. My facilitation assignments brought me closer to this young generation, and I realised the enormous contributions they have made in the challenging and changing social, cultural, and political landscape.
The youth I have interacted with during trainings exhibit the passion and drive to bring about the change they desire. In Kaduna, Nigeria, I was captivated by the young volunteer leaders selected to lead the GFP “ Youth Advocacy to Prevent Violent Movements in Northern Nigeria ” Programme supported by Robert Bosch Stiftung. These young people are capable of identifying what is wrong in their communities and leading the change they need because they have creative minds focused more on the present and moving forward, whereas older generations have often come to accept societal ills and anomalies as norms.
These thirty ethnically diverse youth were passionate about and committed to commencing their small actions to achieve a giant step toward change within Kaduna State. And they did this with astounding success ! As they say, “Be the change that you want to see.”
My philosophy is that everyone has strengths, passions, capacities, and abilities, meaning the focus should never be on what is wrong with youth, but instead on how to use their relatively untapped reservoir of possibility, creativity, invention, and endless reams of energy to change the world.

My experience as a teacher taught me that if you expect the worst from young people, you will get just that. My experience as a GFP Pioneer Facilitator has enabled me experience first-hand how diverse groups of youth from conflict divides take responsibility for the change they want in their communities and put in the effort needed to achieve that change. Though it takes time, patience, and grit, youth are proving that they are up to the task in playing their part to build more peaceful communities and societies.
The insight displayed, the enthusiasm harnessed, and creativity invested by these youth leaders as they identify issues of conflict, collectively agreeing on the kind of interventions they would like to carry out and the communities they want to engage, gives me hope that the world can be better if we recognise, equip, and mentor youth for the journey toward peace they decide to embark on.

What makes a people happy? With the world's largest economy and its highest GDP, you might think the United States would have the world's happiest citizens, but you'd be wrong. This year when the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network released its annual World Happiness Report, the US dropped out of the top 20, landing at 23rd on the list. Meanwhile, guess who held onto the top spot for its seventh consecutive year? Finland.
What societal and cultural factors have led to Finland consistently coming out on top? To talk more about the latest Happiness Report, I'm now joined by Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, Director of Oxford University's Wellbeing Research Centre, and Professor of Economics and Behavioral Science. Jan, thanks for being on The Excerpt.
Jan-Emmanuel De Neve:
Thank you, Dana, for having me.
Social media sites are often blamed for so much unhappiness, especially in young people, but social media is definitely here to stay. There's no putting that genie back in the bottle. How can young people, or any of us really, continue to engage on social without the negative side effects, or is that even possible?
Dana, you dive right into it, didn't you? So we did, in the World Happiness Report, track the historical data around well-being, and for the first time in this year's World Happiness Report we split it by age groups. And this is where really we found that disconcerting drop in youth well-being particularly so in North America and particularly so in the United States of America.
And so for example, you mentioned the drop of the United States in our ranking from the mid-teens to 23rd in the space of just one year. As we found out, that is purely driven by youth. So if you look at youth alone, which in this case we'd consider, say, below thirties, then the US would rank 63rd in the world. And so that's whereas the above sixties in the United States would rank 10th in the world.
And so a huge intergenerational divide has kind of opened up in terms of well-being in the United States. And we've picked up that trend actually starting with the introduction more or less of smartphones and social media. And so there is definitely something to discuss around social media, what we can do about putting, if you will, the social back into social media and putting guardrails in place in terms of the way that adolescents are using social media, especially in the United States these days.
Jan, we've recently put out a poll to our audiences on social asking them why they think younger Americans are so deeply unhappy, and the choices were money stress, social media, political polarization, or other where you could write in something else if you wanted to.
And overwhelmingly, they chose money stress as their number one reason for being unhappy. There were a lot of comments about inflation, the high cost of living. But those aren't things that most of us have the ability to control, so how do you recommend people reconcile that desire for happiness with an inability to afford the kind of lifestyles that perhaps they'd been told to expect when they were younger?
You're right, the economy, there is inflation, cost of living, but I would add into the mix, which I think is driving a bit of this, especially for youth, is the uncertainty about the future.
So there's lots of excitement about AI and machine learning and large language models and computers and automation, but it also introduced a lot of insecurity and uncertainty for people in their future sort of job market outcomes. So they don't have a relatively, if you will, simple pathway or vision or future to look forward to in the way that I think my generation and the older generations had.
And it also puts in question this sort of natural notion of we will always do better than the previous generation. And that is I think also a question mark at this point, materially maybe, but at what costs? And who will benefit the most from these new sort of technologies? These are real deep questions that youth are actually struggling with and thinking about, and that uncertainty is definitely weighing on their well-being as well.
Okay. So number two on that list for most people as to why American youth are unhappy with political polarization. Can you talk about how that plays into a country's happiness? And also, what would you recommend for people to do to lessen that polarization?
It's a good point, and I think the World Happiness Report actually does have insights on this particular front, because the US is particularly polarized, and increasingly so.
And then when we look at countries that are doing really well where life satisfaction, the way we measure well-being is very high, say, the Scandinavian countries, then you find that there's much more social support. People help strangers in need. People trust the institutions, they support each other, they volunteer, they donate, et cetera. So we have data on all these kind of elements that would give you that picture of a more holistic community that trusts and supports each other.
Now, with political polarization of both the media and the politicians trying to drive a wedge between people in all kinds of ways and mostly driving on the negative news, that puts a lot of pressure on that normally quite natural human support that we have, that we care about our neighbors and try and help strangers in need. But with all the negative news and the polarization, the default now almost comes to everybody to him or herself.
And so that social support is unwinding or weakening in the context of the United States. And I think that's for us a large chunk to blame when looking at the drop in life evaluations and life satisfaction in the United States and the drop concurrently in the ranking for the United States.
Well, I do want to talk about young Americans in comparison with, say, young Lithuanians whose ranking is number one in terms of happiness. What, if anything, sets these two groups apart in terms of lifestyle, wealth, social connection or values?
Now, I think what's going on in Lithuania is they've come from a relatively lower place than the US has traditionally been at. And there's more hope, economic opportunities. You should obviously remember Eastern Europe joined the European Union and then benefited from a lot of subsidies and transfers from Western Europe to Eastern Europe, starting in the 2000s.
And the labor market, if you will, for youth in Lithuania is one that's wide open to all of the European Union, whereas before, their parents' generation was much more closed. And so you see that there's also a positive economic dynamic. There's opportunities, there's hope, there's a future in terms of work for them.
But also, it's important to point out these central and Eastern European nations typically have a socialist background. They were in sort of the hemisphere of the Eastern Bloc, if you will, around the Soviet Union. And I think they're really pleased to have left the sphere of influence of Russia.
However, they still have that DNA around sort of sharing, so redistribution. So whatever wealth they're now generating, there is much more of a welfare state, a healthcare system, free education in place still. So those are elements of the social system, if you will, that they're keeping a hold of while benefiting from more economic opportunities of the Western world.
So they're sort of keeping the best of both worlds. They're keeping the healthcare and the school, state and educational systems while also benefiting from an upward positive trend, thanks to the more liberal market economies that have helped bring them on board.
Well, as you mentioned earlier, US adults age 60 and older ranked 10th for happiness. What do you think accounts for this huge discrepancy in happiness across generations? Why are the boomers so happy?
Well, I think, Dana, you've put it well, and you immediately said the boomers. So they have, I think, benefited from precisely that optimism, the economic dynamics that really put a lot of wind in their sails as they were going through the same period in the late teen when they were in their late adolescence and their thirties and their forties.
They also benefited from essentially pretty much free schooling in a lot of cases, and university tuition fees that were well, well, well below what it is today. We should remind ourselves that university tuition fees, especially in the United States, have outpaced inflation rates by a lot.
So they've benefited from a lot of subsidies frankly, and a state system that was more operational. And I think that still suits them really well. Future generations have a bit tougher in a number of ways.
So turning back to the Happiness Report, Finland's sauna culture helps with relaxation and strengthens social connections. Break down that part of Finnish culture for us, Jan. Are saunas really a part of the secret sauce that's making Finns happy?
Well, it's interesting. I think the saunas as such, maybe not, but they are an example, an illustration of society. So they will come together a lot in nature. And the Finns really, really, really show lots of social support for each other.
They help strangers in need, huge range of volunteering and donating, and they also trust their institutions hugely. And they get a lot from the institutions in return, including of course welfare, healthcare, pretty much free education, also the basis of relatively high wealth just like the United States.
But the Finns, and I have to say also the Danes and the Swedes and the Swiss and the Dutch do punch above their weight in terms of well-being for the same amount of wealth.
So really, this is also a bit of a challenge for all of our US aspiring political leaders or political leaders, is to say, "What can we do to improve the quality of life of people as they experience it," which is the measure we use, life satisfaction, "with all the wealth that's going around the United States? Are there ways of using that to better effect?"
Okay, so as we've established, all Nordic countries fared well on the World Happiness Report. Some of that was attributed to their natural environment, lots of trees, beautiful fjords, a quiet countryside.
But for Finland, they also share a lengthy border with Russia where there have seen significant tensions recently. Wouldn't you expect Finland's happiness rating to drop given that it's now sharing a border with a nation at war, especially given Finland's recent joining of NATO?
Yes, thank you for that question. It's a very subtle one and a complex one, needless to say. It goes without saying that major security concerns, national security, where people's physical and mental well-being or health is potentially at risk from invasion or other major security risks, that will have a negative impact on people's well-being.
So for example, when we actually study places that are undergoing civil war or of wars of, say, of invasion, as we see for example in the case of the Ukraine, we find huge drops in people's well-being.
Now, interestingly, what we also find is that the way that people respond to that national security threat can buffer to some extent the original drop in well-being. So the negative effect of the national security risk can be mitigated to some extent by a coming together element.
So in England, they call this fellow feeling, or in America be more like rallying around the flag type of approach. So the way that communities and societies respond to that external threat can also bring them together to some extent and provide identity, sense of belonging and sense of community.
So a good example here is of course Ukraine. What we found in the case of Ukraine is a huge negative impact of the war through the Russian invasion. But at the same time, the Ukrainians have come together, they fought this together, they now believe in their leaders taking the right course of action. At the individual level we saw outsized statistics around helping strangers in need, donating, volunteering. And so you saw that it created essentially an identity for Ukraine. So in this war was also forged, if you will, Ukrainian identity.
Now, going back to the Finns and using that to some extent, their response to that long border with Russia has been really a strong one. First of all, they've now joined NATO as a result of this, which is a huge step, and also forges ties between them and between them and the rest of essentially the Western Alliance, the North American Treaty Organization, NATO. And so that's a powerful step that they've come together about.
So yes, while there's heightened security risk, it has also brought the community of Finns together, and so that's typically what we underestimate. The importance of social capital in driving population well-being or your own social ties, the quality of the relationships that you have, actual social relations, mostly in person, might also be virtual, but will mostly have to translate to in-person relationships, they matter a lot more than people think. Having that sense of belonging and friends to rely on in case of trouble is incredibly important.
