Written and directed by Julien de Volte and Arnaud Tabarly 2021, 80 minutes, Not Yet Rated UK FrightFest Premiere on 27th August 2022

Starring: Julien Courbey as Stephana Johan Libéreau as Gertre Fabien Ara as Yvon Marion Mezadorian as Augustine

A zombie film like no other, Julien de Volte and Arnaud Tabarly’s singular Super Z takes the more talkative, sweary zombies of Braindead and Return of the Living Dead and removes all the boring humans, creating one of the world’s first zombie-fronted zombie movies. Crucially, it does so without the cop-out of having the zombies act like slightly pale versions of human beings. Warm Bodies this ain’t.

Breaking free from the government facility where they were created, a family of zombies flee to the woods, establishing an idyllic little home for themselves. As the zombies hunt, forage, and fall in love, an unconventional family unit is born. And, as the zombies are themselves hunted by their creators, thoughts turn to revolution against their warm-blooded overlords.

super z 01

All of which is a front for seventy minutes of debauchery and mayhem, shot from the zombies’ perspective. Super Z is a non-stop riot of gore, violence (including explosive machine gun shootouts), rutting and creative swearing. It’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Part 2 , if every single character was Bill Moseley’s Chop-Top. It’s The Happiness of the Katakuris, through a filter of French obscenity.

At a time when most zombie horror is depressingly morose and/or nihilistic, Super Z is a shot in the (torn off) arm for the subgenre. Its zombies don’t walk or shamble so much as they rave, turning a simple dinner sequence into something that wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of Euphoria. It’s exhausting to watch, but a fascinating experience – Married With Children on bath salts.

super z 03

Which is to say, Super Z will not be to all tastes. De Volte and Tabarly offer no relief from the onslaught, and their zombies scream, shriek, snarl and slather their way through every scene – slurping on dismembered cocks and screeching swears at everyone and everything in the vicinity. Some may call this vein of black comedy one note, but if you look carefully, there’s a lot of intricacy to the levels of filth on display.

super z 05

It’s to the directors’ credit that none of this gets old. But then, they scarcely give it time to, charging headlong from messy sex sequences to bloody firefights to its oddly sweet ending. Talking of which, stay for the end credits, and not just for the best use of Eiffel 65’s ‘Blue (Da Ba Dee)’ in film (sorry, Iron Man 3).

Watch with a crowd, and then watch at least a quarter of them walk out in disgust.

super z movie review

  • Aug 27, 2022

Directed by the team of Julien de Volte and Arnaud Tabarly, Super Z is easily set to be one of the most divisive films at this year’s Arrow Video FrightFest. The experience of watching Super Z is a wild ride, one that takes some adjusting to. Upon first setting eyes on Super Z, the viewer will run through a range of emotions and will be unable to comprehend whether they are loving, hating, or hallucinating what is happening on screen.

Super Z

Super Z tells the very unique story of a quartet of zombies that escape the laboratory into which they were birthed. After escaping the facility holding them, the foursome form a family unit and set out in search of a new life together. Along the way they pick up an extra member in the form of an accidentally-turned victim. The newly-formed family find a home in the woods and embark on a more peaceful, albeit chaotic, existence.

Unlike most other zombies in film history, these have the ability to talk. Not being fluent in French, it’s a little tricky to work out exactly how clear their voices or words are. But talk they definitely do. Their voices sound like a cross between a helium balloon, a gremlin, and a Smurf on speed. It’s a wacky sound to hear, and one that takes a long time to get used to. Those with kids at home will likely adapt as they don’t sound too dissimilar to half of the characters on children’s television shows. Keep the kids away from Super Z though as, despite their almost cartoonish nature, this group is not family-friendly.

Scenes set within the zombie clan’s day-to-day life are where Super Z feels the most at home. The dynamics and hierarchy within the unit are what keep the film engaging. Newbie zombie Yvon (Fabien Ara) struggles to find his place in his new family. His older ‘sisters’ bully him, father Gertre (Johan Libéreau) ignores him, and mother Stephana (Julien Courbey) smothers him. In many ways Super Z works as a coming-of-age story, and watching Yvon transition from runt to zombie has a lot of fun moments.

The other core of the story is the relationship between Gertre and Stephana. On the surface they may appear to be monstrous creatures with a hunger for blood, but the two are actually really sensitive. They clearly have genuine feelings and love for one another and tender exchanges between the pair are some of the film’s strongest moments. Their unexpectedly sweet relationship is just one of the many jarring aspects of Super Z. One moment there’s some unsavoury sexual innuaendo, the next a young zombie is seen falling in love, complete with animated hearts flying around him. Super Z is a psychedelic ride from start to finish, but is peppered with enough true heart that it becomes oddly touching. As family life starts to take its toll, Gertre and Stephana’s relationship starts to crumble and the whole woodland homestead echoes the tribulations experienced by households across the globe.

A film that assaults the senses on every level, Super Z plays like a manic Saturday morning cartoon. It even goes so far as to include actual animation. In addition to the floating cartoon love hearts, Super Z opens with an expositional animation. One that immediately helps set the tone. Every element in Super Z feels as if it has been super-charged and it’ll take a robust and willing audience to cling on till the climax. Mirroring the oddball nature of the story, the dwelling has been designed to look as haphazard and tumultuous as possible. The music injects further verve and packs in a ton of techno tunes whose songs all have something to do with zombies. Even at the end, Super Z refuses to let the energy levels dip as it plays nineties earworm, Blue, by Eiffel 69.

Super Z feels exactly like the type of film that would be spat out if you were to try and blend together Return of the Living Dead, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and The Happiness of the Katakruis. Super Z is a LOT for the mind to process, and it will likely take a few days for final feelings to sink in. A film that requires commitment, watching Super Z is akin to experiencing a waking fever dream. There’s heart hidden amongst the madness though and once time for reflection has occurred it becomes clear that this ragtag, rather progressive family of misfits, have set up shop in your heart.

Although the chaotic energy, vibrant characters, and bold colours are a lot to reconcile, by Super Z’ s climax you’ll have likely fallen for this group of misfit zombie outcasts.

Super Z was reviewed at Arrow Video FrightFest 2022.

Toronto after dark review: ‘super z’ gives new blood to the zombie subgenre.

super z

The zombie genre, like many horror subgenres, has gotten a little stale over the years. The craze seems to have spawned more pretenders than contenders in terms of adding something new and fresh. Of course, every so often something comes along that surprises me, and Super Z was one of those films. Insane and fun, it turned the subgenre upside down and is a wild ride from start to finish.

We witness experiments being done on humans, those kinds of experiments that are done in obscure installations far away from prying eyes, and the obvious moral questions that would arise. An unknown corporation is trying to turn humans into zombies, which in itself seems like a really bad idea, and to their utter surprise and astonishment, their experiments give birth to zombies that can think, talk, and reason, forming a family unit. Of course, they want nothing to do with captivity and escape, finding refuge in a hidden house in the forest while being pursued by mercenaries.

RELATED: Cassandra Peterson Talks Becoming Elvira, Coming Out, Meeting Elvis & More

Reading the basics of the plot, it sounds a bit outlandish, but feasible. I mean, we’ve seen mad scientists and evil corporations over the years doing ungodly things that eventually go wrong. However, directors Julien de Volte and Arnaud Tabarly take that premise and turn it on its head, applying a generous mix of comedy and action, all while most of the film is shot through the eyes of the new zombie family. Watching the family ‘settle down’ and try and live some kind of normal life is interesting on its own, but the frantic speed in which everything moves adds the absurdity of it all and it is a fantastic and original mashup.

Gertre (Johan Libéreau) and Stephana (Julien Courbey) are the parental units of this new zombie family, with Georgette (Florence Bebic-Veruni), Marcelline (Audrey Giacomini), and Yvon (Fabien Ara) as the kids, with Yvon kind of adopted along the way. We watch them struggle with the family dynamics, similar to any human family, while at the same time trying to survive being hunted down. Make no mistake, they are angry and not against killing all humans that cross their path (hey, they also have to eat), but the film’s manic pace is like watching the the story evolve on fast-forward, which makes for a quick and wonderfully-paced film. Super Z goes full throttle from start to finish, pausing briefly for some interesting dialogue, between mouthfuls of entrails and body parts, of course.

Amongst the chaos, humor, and violence, it’s very interesting to watch things from the zombies’ point of view. The family situations which are tackled, including sexuality and morality issues, combined with the evils and greed of corporations, show there are reasons behind the craziness. Fast-paced, hilarious, frantic, and gross, Super Z is madness with a message and a very welcome addition to a subgenre that is in dire need of some new blood.

Super Z recently screened at the 2021 Toronto After Dark Film Festival.

Just Avatar characters on cocaine with Tourette's syndrome . I can't figure out if I've watched a porn or a horror film and one day someone's going to have to explain to French cinema in their comedies, even horrific ones, especially to failed directors, you don't have to make scatophile and incestuous jokes every 2 minutes to be funny. Officially the shittiest, most unbearable zombie movie in the entire industry. I'm lost in the meanderings again

Headache inducing zomcom about an experiment that creates a family of "Super Zombies", who are foul mouthed and crude and only want to live in peace as a family but keep having to deal with military soldiers trying to destroy them to keep the experiment a secret. I turned down the volume to 1 and it was still too loud, visually as well as audibly. The film has some interesting comedy ideas. The mother figure is a transvestite who keeps changing her hairdo but switching the scalps of their victims, as well as adding some female body parts too. When they perform regular household chores they do them as a zombie would, like washing dishes in a sink of blood,…

So this is.... nuts. A movie possibly more than ever that will divide audiences. I'm certain this movie will gather a cult following over the coming years as its one of the weirdest, funniest, bizzariest zombie movies you'll probably ever see! If u like childish fart joke humour (which I do!) and are ready for some hilariously offensive imagery and a bright colour pallette, this movie will be for u! Enter at your own risk.

I am going to wheel out review cliché #22, and state that this would have made a great short film. It starts and ends strongly enough, although the digital gunfire effects are woefully lacking in real-world impact. The romance between Yvon and Augustine is kinda adorable, and I wish more had been made of that: the final shot before the end credits roll is particularly effective. The parents are far less appealing, and their shrill yelping at each other - there's some really weird audio manipulation going on too - got so bad, Chris contemplated mounting a rare offensive to try and wrest mastery of the remote control away from me. You may be better off turning the volume down and reading the subtitles instead.

The scariest kind of movie: a french comedy

Val

Review by Val

A French zombie comedy that mixes grossout often fairly explicit antics with broad farce. There is a clever bit here or there - a moment where the imitating a bourgeois family zombies show the proper way to eat a human fetus, which is like an ortolan (again: French movie) but it spends far more of its time on dinner table antics around eating penises and testicles, the latter’s comedy value is mostly people keep mentioning them. (The non-zombies do too, for some reason.) The splatter can be quite good and the zombie makeup is quite fair but overall it’s a mix of the kind of broad naughty French comedy I’m not wild about with the sort of tasteless horror comedy I dislike less for the lack of taste than the calibre of the jokes. An acquired taste at best, like the fetuses.

'The Six Triple Eight' Teaser Trailer

super z movie review

Brandon Christensen ’s “ Z ,” premiering May 7 th on Shudder, is a vicious little movie that recalls “Poltergeist” and “ The Babadook ” with its story of a possessive force that destroys a family. It’s a little rough around the edges in terms of an obviously thin effects budget and even simple things like its overcooked score but there’s a lot to like here in terms of storytelling within the risky screenplay by Christensen and Colin Minahan (“ What Keeps You Alive ”). It’s one of those films that may be overly reliant on jump scares when you tally them all up, but I’d by lying if I didn’t admit that a few of them legitimately made me jump. There’s one in particular that made me gasp in a way I don’t think I will with any other horror movie this year—it’s the moment you know this movie, unlike its title character, isn’t playing around.

Josh Parsons ( Jett Klyne ) is a quiet eight-year-old without a lot of friends. And so his parents—Elizabeth ( Keegan Connor Tracy) and Kevin ( Sean Rogerson )—are actually happy when their son starts opening up and playing with an imaginary friend named ‘Z’. The sense that something is wrong with Josh’s relationship with Z hits mom first, as it always does in these movies (you could program a film festival with horror movies in which mom knew something was wrong before dumb old dad). Josh, who formerly slept with the door open now wants it closed because “Z likes it dark.” And mom thinks she sees something at Play Zone but no one believes her. In fact, there’s an interesting undercurrent in the first third of “Z” in which it feels like Elizabeth is being gaslighted by her husband and son. Josh seems to be acting even creepier to get attention and dad is willfully dismissive of the problems with his son, even after he gets suspended from school.

Mom is the first to suspect that there’s more to the story of Z than meets the eye. First, it’s reflected in the increasingly unstable behavior of her son, which really hits home when literally no one in his class will come over for a playdate. They’re all scared of Josh. And then there are the creepy night scenes of sounds and shadows when Elizabeth senses a presence in the house. Some of these are a bit overdone for the theatricality of the genre. I’ve always said there are some horror movies in which it feels like the characters can hear the creepy score and know they’re in a genre movie as they move slowly to increase tension. In the real world, you’d probably just flip on the light with a little less gravitas, but that’s no fun.

Christensen and Minahan are smart to give “Z” two major turns—sorry to anyone who’s not a fan of the three-act structure. The first act’s gaslighting creepiness becomes something more like “Poltergeist,” especially after Josh draws a terrifying vision of Z on his wall and, well, violence happens (I won’t spoil the aforementioned jump scare, but mine was accompanied by an audible exhalation and I believe a curse word). Without spoiling anything, a doctor who also treated a young Elizabeth, played by the always-reliable Stephen McHattie , reveals a family history with this particular problem that the Parsons are having. But the film has another turn in its final act, leading to a pitch-black ending.

It may be all a bit too manipulative and inconsistent for some people, and I wouldn’t argue too much, but this feels like a perfect film for Shudder, the growing service for horror fans. People who shell out a monthly subscription fee to the streaming company—which was built on the success of the creepy kids and haunted house movies that spawned “Z”—are unlikely to be disappointed by their new horror friend.

Premieres on Shudder tomorrow, 5/7.

10 TV Shows That Perfectly Capture Gen Z Culture

10 best movies about gen z characters, 8 books that perfectly blend fantasy & horror.

This article contains mention of police brutality.

  • Gen-Z movies explore the impact of the internet on social rules and young minds, making trends shift quickly.
  • Millennials are creating promising films for Gen-Z, with movies that transcend their target audience.
  • Contemporary Gen-Z films like "Bottoms" and "Theater Camp" reflect the generation's humor, style, and interests.

Gen-Z humor, style, and language are notoriously difficult to replicate in cinema, leading to the ridicule of many movies about the generation across the internet. However, there are a decent number of films that capture the essential elements that make the generation one that's unlike the ones that came before. Much of this boils down to the impact of the internet in redefining the social rules and capital of young minds. This makes trends and ideologies change faster than ever, making movies feel dated more quickly. However, many promising Millennial directors with futures in cinema have taken on the challenge.

The best movies by and for Gen-Z transcend their target audience and entertain everyone.

While plenty of relatable Millennial movies have been in circulation since the generation earned their name, more Gen-Z movies have been rising to prominence. This is exciting, as a new generation of Gen-Z filmmakers and actors has been dominating Hollywood and establishing themselves as the future of cinema. With the influx of content from this younger generation, the older ones are sometimes hesitant to accept the change in themes and plot in their stories. However, the best movies by and for Gen-Z transcend their target audience and entertain everyone.

Jamal in On My Block, Rue in Euphoria, and Maeve in Sex Education.

A wave of television shows focusing on Gen Z and their culture have taken over streaming services in recent years, and these are ten of the best.

10 To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Not available

Based on the novel by Jenny Han, To All the Boys I Loved Before sees high-school student Lara Jean Covey caught in a terrifyingly awkward situation when her deepest secrets leak out. Lara, who has many passionate crushes, has written confession letters to all of them – with no intention of ever sending them. However, when all five letters somehow reach her five loves, Lara’s high school life becomes an exercise in crisis management as she desperately attempts to gain control of it all.

Han's rise to fame began in 2018 when Netflix released the first To All The Boys movie, in an early example of Gen-Z's take on the traditional rom-com.

The author of the To All The Boys I've Loved Before books, Jenny Han, has her finger on the pulse when it comes to what Gen-Z readers are interested in. This made her works an obvious choice for film and TV adaptations, as her other series, The Summer I Turned Pretty , has been a hit TV series on Amazon Prime for the past few years. However, Han's rise to fame began in 2018 when Netflix released the first To All The Boys movie, in an early example of Gen-Z's take on the traditional rom-com.

Starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, who have both become recurring actors in the Gen-Z canon, To All The Boys is set on fire by their hesitant and innocent chemistry that lets the teenagers be regular kids. A common mistake in Gen-Z media is that filmmakers make the characters act too mature for their age, but the cast of the film genuinely seems like teenagers. Additionally, though they use their phones and let the internet interfere with their relationships, they're not the stereotypical "screenagers" that some films depict them as.

9 Booksmart (2019)

Directed by olivia wilde.

super z movie review

Booksmart is a comedy film directed by Olivia Wilde and follows two studious and by-the-book high school seniors who decide on their final day of school to shake up the formula and break some rules. Having lamented missing four potential years of fun and friendship, the best friends attempt to cram four years of the "high school experience" into a single night.

Booksmart was Olivia Wilde's debut, and it showed that girlhood and the transition from high school to college might look different for each generation, but many of the experiences are universal. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever are believable best friends in the movie that sees their characters navigate their last few days of high school before leaving for college. Many actors who have starred in the other favorite movies of Gen-Z are featured in the cast as well.

The film's story is memorable predominantly because it features such a strong female friendship but also because it's a high school movie that makes the cool kids good , as the protagonists' viewpoints on their peers vastly change throughout the narrative. While the classic cliques of high school are present in the film, they're subverted, and the message that everyone has fears and insecurities is communicated. Booksmart also touches upon the intense pressure many kids feel to get into an elite college.

8 Do Revenge (2022)

Directed by jennifer kaytin robinson.

Do Revenge Movie Poster

Camilla Mendes and Maya Hawke star in Do Revenge, a Netflix comedy film about two high schoolers that after experiencing social bullying on a spectacular scale, become social outcasts. When Drea (Mendes) has a private video of hers leaked out across the internet by her boyfriend, her social life and brand are irreparably tarnished, leaving her outside her prior social circle. Eleanor (Hawke) experiences a similar situation when her bully, a girl named Carissa (Ava Capri), spreads a rumor that she tried to hold her down and kiss her. When the two form an unexpected friendship, they plan to "do revenge" against each other's bullies in an elaborate scheme to tear them down.

One of the more fun aspects of Gen-Z culture that films aren't afraid to mine is the generation's interest in vintage fashion and trends from decades past, which influences their clothing and style.

Two iconic stars of Gen-Z television head up Do Revenge , with Camila Mendes from Riverdale and Maya Hawk from Stranger Things playing the leads. One of the more fun aspects of Gen-Z culture that films aren't afraid to mine is the generation's interest in vintage fashion and trends from decades past, which influences their clothing and style. This comes through in Do Revenge , allowing the teen comedy to be in conversation with the classic high school films from the 1990s and '80s.

The web of lies, secrets, and betrayals that slowly unfold in Do Revenge are often outlandish in nature, but this shows that Gen-Z is just as capable of melodrama and stylization in cinema as earlier filmmakers. Like many movies of its genre, Do Revenge was released directly to streaming on Netflix, but this hasn't hindered its popularity. Since social media is such a large part of Gen-Z life and culture, every aspect of life is curated to a certain extent, and Do Revenge captures this well.

7 Love, Simon (2018)

Directed by greg berlanti.

Love, Simon (2018) - Poster

Love, Simon (2018)

Love, Simon is a 2018 romantic comedy-drama directed by Greg Berlanti and based on the novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. The film follows Simon Spier, a high school student navigating life while keeping his sexual orientation private. When an email falls into the wrong hands, Simon faces the challenges of coming out to his friends and family and finding his anonymous online crush.

Many of the most underrated LGBTQ+ coming-of-age movies have come out in the last few decades, as Gen-Z has had more of a platform and opportunity to center voices that go unheard. Love, Simon takes the classic rom-com formula and centers on a young queer teenager, Simon, who still struggles to come out and accept himself even though it's a generally more tolerant era. However, his sexuality is only one facet of his life and personality, as his relationships with his friends and family also play a large role in the film.

Even less than ten years later, it would be inconceivable to make a teen movie without including an LGBTQ+ character, but when Love, Simon was released, the fact that it centered on a gay love story was a big deal. It was one of the first to be backed by a major studio, and its strong theatrical performance shows how much Gen-Z appreciates having their stories told on film. The warm critical reception it received has paved the way for the more recent Gen-Z movies that focus on LGBTQ+ stories.

6 Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

Directed by halina reijn.

Bodies Bodies Bodies Key Poster

Bodies Bodies Bodies

Bodies Bodies Bodies is a comedy/horror/thriller from 2 AM. When Bee (Maria Bakalova) travels to a hurricane party with her girlfriend Sophie (Amanda Stenberg), they find themselves surrounded by affluent 20-somethings with very different world views. When the party finally kicks off amidst the coming storm, the debauchery leads to a game of "Bodies Bodies Bodies." However, when a power outage occurs during the game, and a murder occurs in its stead, the party takes a turn for the deadly.

These creative choices, combined with the soundtrack and the conversations surrounding class and identity, put it firmly in the Gen-Z genre.

Contemporary horror movies are a great place to look when discussing how cinema has evolved in the modern era. Bodies Bodies Bodies is as much a dark satire as it is a horror film, and it clearly drew inspiration from the classics that define the genre. The star-studded cast speaks to how on the pulse the movie and its director, Halina Reijn, are. These creative choices, combined with the soundtrack and the conversations surrounding class and identity, put it firmly in the Gen-Z genre.

Few films have captured the rhythm and nuance of Gen-Z language and communication the way Bodies Bodies Bodies has. It helps that the actors were all familiar with the vernacular and slang of the internet, but Bodies Bodies Bodies also works hard not to date itself with any elements that are too rooted in the early 2020s. Many successful modern horror films are class commentaries and are part of the "eat the rich" genre, and Bodies Bodies Bodies pokes fun at this trope for its often hypocritical moral condemnations.

5 Eighth Grade (2018)

Directed by bo burnham.

super z movie review

Eighth Grade

Written and directed by Bo Burnham, marking his first directorial debut, Eighth Grade is a Drama and Comedy starring Elsie Fisher and Josh Hamilton. The 2018 release follows a young girl with anxiety that tries to gain the favor of her classmates during the last week of Eighth Grade.

Eighth Grade was the project that transformed Bo Burnham from a comedian to a filmmaker. While it's expected to make a movie about teenagers of every generation, it's much more difficult to tackle the rife and insecurity period of the middle school years just before a child makes the jump to adolescence. Painfully anxiety-inducing and cringe-worthy, Eighth Grade pulls no punches about how hard it is to be a thirteen-year-old girl and how much worse it's become because of the influx of technology and social media.

The protagonist, Kayla, played by Elsie Fisher in their breakout role, is constantly on her phone and struggles to connect with anyone outside of it because of her anxiety. Issues of anxiety being linked to an increase in the prevalence of the internet are defining aspects of the Gen-Z experience. However, Eighth Grade doesn't villainize or blame Kayla for her inexperience with the world and connection to her phone because this is all she's known.

4 The Edge Of Seventeen (2016)

Directed by kelly fremon craig.

super z movie review

The Edge of Seventeen

The Edge of Seventeen is a 2016 coming-of-age story starring Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick, and Haley Lu Richardson. Steinfeld stars as Nadine Franklin, who is struggling her way through high school as a 17-year-old. But things get more complicated when her best friend starts dating her older brother.

The Edge of Seventeen takes on a darker tone than a typical comedy, as Nadine is an imperfect protagonist who is genuinely struggling in life.

Hailee Steinfeld has proven herself to be one of the best actresses of her generation through her roles in True Grit and the TV series Dickinson , and she brings Nadine to life with great empathy in The Edge of Seventeen . Like many Gen-Z protagonists, Nadine has difficulty connecting with and communicating with others, leading to intense feelings of isolation that are compounded by how people interact with each other over social media. Steinfeld is joined by Woody Harrelson, who juxtaposes Nadine's Gen-Z tendencies with his maturity and knowledge.

The Edge of Seventeen takes on a darker tone than a typical comedy, as Nadine is an imperfect protagonist who is genuinely struggling in life. Her dependency on her only friend, Krista, is a source of discomfort and anxiety when Krista begins dating Nadine's older brother, sending her on a spiral. Praised for Steinfeld's performance and its well-written script, The Edge of Seventeen characterizes Nadine as a member of Gen-Z with all the information and language of an adult but none of the experience and perspective.

3 Bottoms (2023)

Directed by emma seligman.

Bottoms Movie Poster

Bottoms is a sex comedy film that follows two high school girls determined to hook up with cheerleaders before they graduate. To accomplish this, they decide to start a fight club to power their way up to the top of the food chain.

The funniest scenes from Bottoms all illustrate what defines Gen-Z humor and writing, as its absurdist aspects coincide with a sense of humor born and bred on the internet. The director, Emma Seligman, made their directorial debut with Shiva Baby in 2020, which also stars her frequent collaborator, Rachel Sennott. Sennott co-wrote Bottoms with Seligman, and it's been hailed as one of the best contemporary additions to the sex comedy genre and a hilarious interpretation of how Gen-Z deals with intimacy and sexuality.

Ayo Edebiri and Sennott are a perfect pair in Bottoms , and their fantastic chemistry is what makes so many of the jokes work. Edebiri and Sennott will likely come to be known as two of the biggest stars of Gen-Z, as their contributions to film and television have already earned them plenty of critical praise and nods during awards season. Though Bottoms primarily caters to LGBTQ+ audiences, it's a comedy for viewers of all kinds, as its themes and messages are universal in terms of love and friendship.

2 Theater Camp (2023)

Directed by nick lieberman & molly gordon.

Theater Camp Temp Poster

Theater Camp

Theater Camp (2023) is a comedy about a scrappy summer theater camp run by Amos Klobuchar (Ben Platt) and Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon). When their beloved founder falls into a coma, her son Troy Garver (Jimmy Tatro) steps in to run the camp, leading to a series of chaotic and comedic efforts by the staff and campers to keep the theater camp afloat. The film highlights the struggles and triumphs of a close-knit artistic community.

The original songs and the plot's discussion of niche topics of theater and film appealed to a specific but dedicated audience base.

Molly Gordon co-directed and stars in Theater Camp alongside Ben Platt, Noah Galvin, Ebebiri, and many other talented rising stars of the Gen-Z genre. The film was particularly impactful for younger generations. The experience of heading upstate and going to theater camp is one shared by many young adults who seek out new and independent movies. The original songs and the plot's discussion of niche topics of theater and film appealed to a specific but dedicated audience base.

Though Theater Camp didn't have a wide release, it was made popular by the viewers who communicated their interest and enjoyment of the film over the internet. Though the visual aesthetics of Theater Camp are more similar to decades gone by rather than the present day, this tracks with the style and interests of Gen-Z. Additionally, many of the jokes that transcend the theater context are pulled directly from contemporary pop culture.

best-gen-z-movies

There are plenty of great movies that include Gen Z characters, depicting all the struggles and strengths of this generation in their stories.

1 The Hate U Give (2018)

Directed by george tillman jr..

super z movie review

The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give is a drama film adapted from Angie Thomas' novel, which tells the story of Starr Carter, a teenager from a poor and mostly black neighborhood who witnesses her childhood friend being shot by a white police officer and must find her voice to stand up for what's right.

Based on the novel of the same name by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give tackles the darker side of the world that Gen-Z has grown up experiencing. The movie predominantly focuses on the murder of a young Black man, Khalil, who's best friends with Starr, the protagonist. He's killed by a police officer, leading to public outcry from Starr and her community, which is in direct conversation with the real-life instances of police brutality that have been protested for years in the United States.

Amandla Stenberg gives a career-making performance in The Hate U Give as Starr, and this has made her one of the most sought-after Gen-Z stars in Hollywood. Starr stands up for herself and her community throughout the film, becoming a beacon for the issue of combating racial prejudice in governmental institutions. Though The Hate U Give is an emotionally intense and serious film, it's culturally relevant and vital that these stories are told as they reflect the realities of our time.

'Incoming' Review: Netflix Comedy Tries to Be This Generation’s 'Superbad'

The Big Picture

  • Dave and John Chernin’s raunchy high school comedy belongs in detention.
  • Incoming pales in comparison to the teen comedies it’s trying to replicate.
  • It’s just not very funny.

Incoming isn't the next Superbad — it's just super bad . Dave and John Chernin follow in the footsteps of everything from Can't Hardly Wait to American Pie , but they're miles behind. Booksmart , Blockers , and Good Boys have shown how R-rated teen comedies (or younger) can thrive in a modern climate — Incoming kills that momentum. It's the lowest-hanging fruit of house party mischief, resulting in literal toilet humor and misguided attempts to skewer the 2000s sex comedy era. One or two jokes might cause a titter, but the other ninety-eight percent of this unfunny deflation has nothing to offer but hormonal awkwardness without the gut-busting payoff.

Incoming (2024)

Incoming is a high school comedy about four freshmen—Benji, Connor, Eddie, and Koosh—who face the challenges and hilarity of their first-ever party. As they navigate this milestone, they encounter various adolescent terrors.

What Is 'Incoming' About?

Mason Thames stars as Benj Nielsen, a dorkish, theater-loving freshman who wants to kick high school off right. Benj's friends aren't much cooler, but they're optimistic nonetheless. Connor ( Raphael Alejandro ) is an anxious gremlin nicknamed "Fetus," and Eddie ( Ramon Reed ) is a meek pushover. They're all more Jim than Stiffler, but an opportunity presents itself. The final pillar of their group, aspiring social media star Danah 'Koosh' Koushani ( Bardia Seiri ), claims his brother is throwing an upper-classman party, and he can sneak them onto the VIP list . Can this be the start of a badass new era for Benji's boys, or will their night turn into a complete shitshow?

Let's start with "shitshow," because my phrasing is intentional . An entire subplot of Incoming involving internet celebrity Loren Gray concerns excrement — and that's mostly all. It's about a blackout drunk girl, late-night Taco Bell, and poop (for multiple scenes). It's also depressingly unfunny, yet two significant characters are tethered to Gray's soiled Katrina Aurienna for most of their screen time. That's not to say high school comedies of yore have been paragons of intellectual stimulation, but what the Chernins put forward challenges braindead direct-to-video sequels like Road Trip: Beer Pong .

In short bursts, there are times when Incoming displays some semblance of reflective commentary . Danah's creepy-as-hell control room, where he can spy on his brother's party via surveillance cameras, acknowledges how movies like American Pie — which doubled down on Porky's pervy invasions of privacy — positioned unacceptable behaviors as humorous. Benj and Danah agree, out loud, that it's reprehensible … and then Danah goes right back to spying on girls he wants to have sex with (to prove he's worthy of his insane older brother's legacy). Whenever Incoming is about to make an interesting point, said point tumbles off a cliff, and the film embraces precisely what the Chernins just tried to roast. Where a satirical movie like Dude Bro Party Massacre III learns from the past and becomes a loving parody of the slasher subgenre's mistakes, Incoming does the opposite and regresses to the mechanical beta version of high school sex comedies without any introspection.

'Incoming' Is a Netflix Comedy That Wastes Bobby Cannavale

incoming-bobby-canavale

The Chernins' screenplay is spectacularly uninspired , like how Danah and Kayvon Koushani ( Kayvan Shai ) are a recreation of the Bilzerian brothers from Big Mouth . The writing and directing duo drenches Bobby Cannavale 's Mr. Studebaker in cringe, ruining his funny-on-paper schtick as he teaches the children lessons while getting inappropriately hammered with minors. Coming-of-age elements beam the charisma of candy Valentine's Day hearts, and high school stereotypes are cookie-cutter molds that have rusted over from neglect. Not to mention Benji's driving motivation the whole movie, asking out his sophomore crush Bailey ( Isabella Ferreira ), ends in the most don't-make-me-watch-this fashion right before the credits slam into an abrupt finish. It's all a Mad Libs of stupidity like "cattle prod to balls" or "sex with your mom jokes," no funnier than the genius who draws dicks on people's foreheads when they're asleep (which happens, duh).

It's disappointing because the cast is brimming with talent. Names like Kaitlin Olson , Gattlin Griffith , and Scott MacArthur are wasted on a single defining trait. None of the young headlining boys break the shackles of their caricatures, stunting formative storytelling. For an "epic" night of debauchery, Incoming plays scenarios safe and tempers its reductive ambitions. That extends to the lengths performances can push, which isn't very far. Maybe the doodie gag exhausted all the studio's goodwill? It's lighthearted in the wrong, inconsequential way, which leads to its thematic juvenility hitting like a down pillow .

An Andy Warhol quote says, "Art is what you can get away with," which applies here. Incoming reuses the same morally uncouth methods of teen comedies that we now look back on with raised eyebrows — without any humor to soften the blow. The Chernins replicate raunch and ridiculousness, but there's no comedic justification behind most of what's depicted. It's not edgy, funny, or provocative enough to overcome lousy taste, lacking key ingredients that made movies like American Pie so successful. Incoming is a massive disappointment that'd get picked last in gym class, barely funnier than the class clown who never left your hometown.

incoming-2024-poster.jpg

Incoming is a bummer of a high school comedy that tries to say something about the American Pie era but forgets its point halfway through and just tries to copy what worked a few decades ago.

  • I think I laughed once or twice, so there's that.
  • Loren Gray gets the only likable payoff, somehow.
  • Jokes faceplant on repeat.
  • It's giving the copycat kind of déjà vu.
  • The cast is wasted on thoughtless material.

Incoming is now available to stream on Netflix in the U.S.

Since the passing of Akira Toriyama, creator of the Dragon Ball series, longtime fans have wondered what the future holds for the popular anime franchise. However, a viral 'leak' suggesting the end of the Dragon Ball Super manga is being called out by fans for its lack of authenticity.

A social media user on X (formerly Twitter) uploaded a photo that appears to be an official announcement from Toyotarou, the artist behind the Dragon Ball Super manga. In the image, Toyotarou says he’s currently hard at work finishing up the Dragon Ball Super manga and that the upcoming "Black Frieza" story arc will be a "super" fun ending for the series. He also thanks fans for their longtime support and suggests they keep following other Dragon Ball -related media, such as Super Dragon Ball Heroes , Dragon Ball Daima and Dragon Ball GT . "I'll be taking a break soon so I and the other amazing Dragon Ball staff members can prepare for the epic tour ahead of us," the message reads. "The godly saga ends soon, so a grand adventure can begin."

Dragon Ball Super 'Leak' Claims Toyotarou Will End the Manga With the "Black Frieza" Arc

While the Dragon Ball Supe r message may appear legitimate at first glance, some noticeable red flags suggest its inauthenticity. Perhaps the biggest is the strange mention of Dragon Ball GT , which ended in 1997. While the 'black sheep' of the Dragon Ball series is viewed more favorably today than its 1996 premiere and is appearing in more media, like the announcement of Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta in Dragon Ball Legends , there’s been no indication of any form of continuation in the series -- especially since the upcoming anime TV series, Dragon Ball Daima , is taking Dragon Ball GT ’s concept of returning Goku to his kid form but in a new and canonical storyline.

Toyotarou, who illustrated the Dragon Ball Super manga for Toriyama, teased in a recent video for the official Dragon Ball news channel that the series would continue when it resumes publication. Commenting on the strong fan ranking of the Goku vs. Moro fight from the manga, Toyotarou said, "Thank you. With the Moro fight being included and all, I was delighted to see the poll results. But I won't stop there! I plan to keep on coming up with lots of exciting battles for fans to enjoy, so I hope you all will continue following my work! Thank you!" Conversely, there’s been no official announcement from the official Dragon Ball social media channels that matches the viral 'leak' posted on X.

Rare Dragon Ball Manga Cover Reveals the 'Rejected' Color Variant of DBZ's Original Volume

Dragon Ball's official website releases a rare unpublished color cover, revealing three versions of one of the manga series' most important volumes.

While the viral end-of-series announcement for Dragon Ball Super appears to be older than the X post in question, the recent news regarding Dragon Ball Daima , Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero and the alleged fight for creative control over the franchise seemed to have caused the faux image to gain traction online. As of now, the Dragon Ball Super manga is still on hiatus following the passing of Toriyama. The previous chapter in the series concluded the manga adaptation of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes movie, which in some ways acted like a final goodbye from Toriyama himself .

The cast of Dragon Ball Z, including characters such as Son Goku, Vegeta and Piccolo, among others, leaps towards the camera in the poster for the show.

Dragon Ball tells the tale of a young warrior by the name of Son Goku, a young peculiar boy with a tail who embarks on a quest to become stronger and learns of the Dragon Balls, when, once all 7 are gathered, grant any wish of choice.

Dragon Ball is the labor of writer/illustrator Akira Toriyama, beginning with Dragon Ball back in 1984. The series originally started as a serialized manga back in Weekly Shonen Jump for nearly a decade until it expanded into the anime franchises it is most known for today. Dragon Ball was later adapted into two animes, with one being Dragon Ball Z, the most universally known series in the entire Dragon Ball canon. The franchise has continued to expand lore via films, video games, and additional sequel TV series, such as the more recent Dragon Ball Super and Super Dragon Ball Heroes. Dragon Ball centers mostly around Son Goku, a being known as a Saiyan, and his friends as they face off against intergalactic threats and seek out the titular dragon balls. When all seven of these balls are collected, they can be used to summon a legendary dragon that can grant the wishes of whoever so gathers them. The Dragon Ball franchise continues to be one of the most well-known and beloved animes of all time, with over forty different countries airing it, and has had a tremendous impact on Western culture as a whole.

  1. FrightFest 2022: Super Z

Review: A zombie film like no other, Julien de Volte and Arnaud Tabarly's singular Super Z takes the more talkative, sweary zombies of Braindead and Return of the Living Dead and removes all the boring humans, creating one of the world's first zombie-fronted zombie movies. Crucially, it does so without the cop-out of having the zombies act like slightly pale versions of human beings. Warm ...

  9. Super Z (2021)

Something that definitely worked in favor of "Super Z" was the special effects and the amount of blood, gore and mayhem. And while I am a gorehound, then the storyline was just way past salvaging here, so the gore was hardly capable of doing much to keep the movie afloat. This movie was a swing and a miss in terms of entertaining me.
