University of Geneva Faculty of Medecine Department of Basic Neurosciences

The Department of Basic Neurosciences is at the heart of the neuroscience community in Geneva, with a core team of 16 research groups covering two campuses (CMU and Campus Biotech). We are exploring brain function, from molecules to neurons and circuits, using cellular and animal models as well as human subjects, with the long-term aim of understanding the neural bases of human behavior in health and disease.

Lemanic Neuroscience Doctoral School (LNDS)

Lemanic Neuroscience Doctoral School (LNDS)

PHD PROGRAM IN NEUROSCIENCE OF THE UNIVERSITIES OF GENEVA AND LAUSANNE

The Lemanic Neuroscience Doctoral School (LNDS) organizes student training both in theoretical and experimental aspects of neuroscience. Research projects take place in affiliated laboratories in Geneva and Lausanne. Depending on the location and affilliation of the host lab, candidates are enrolled in one our our five partner faculties:

  • University of Geneva (UNIGE): Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (FPSE)
  • University of Lausanne (UNIL): Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM) and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (SSP)

Around 190 PhD candidates are currently enrolled in the program (as of September 2022), and receive training via comprehensive coursework within the LN Program and by attending seminars , journal clubs and workshops . Doctoral candidates are encouraged, and also sponsored, to present their research at national and international neuroscience conferences . Facilitating interactions between PhD candidates and senior researchers help our doctoral students to build a network for future collaboration and employment. Our graduates have successful careers in a variety of areas including academia, teaching, research foundations, industry and scientific editing.

The LNDS is strongly embedded in the NeuroLéman Network aiming to link junior and senior neuroscientists and clinicians from the Lemanic (Lake Geneva) region within and across universities and research areas.

The annual retreat of the NeuroLéman Network and Doctoral Schools (NLN) aims for in-person encounters of PIs, postdocs and PhD candidates from all neuroscience labs of UNIGE, UNIL and EPFL, as well as UNIFR (as our close partner university).

Please write to [email protected] for receiving information about course offers and training events .

Study in Switzerland

Switzerland has one of the most advanced free-market economies, which is reflected in the high living standards and the satisfaction of people living here. In terms of higher education, Swiss universities are constantly ranked among the best in Europe, and they shine in areas like Business, Tourism, Culinary Arts, and Engineering. When compared to Western universities, tuition fees in Switzerland are affordable, and all studies — especially PhD programmes — are world-class. You’ll have the opportunity to develop in a multilingual environment and try learning international languages like German, French, or Italian. If you settle down here, the unemployment rates are low, and salaries are well above the European average.

Explore your Neuroscience degree

Neuroscience delves into the complexities of the brain and nervous system, spanning molecular biology to cognitive processes. Specialisations include molecular neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, clinical neuroscience, computational neuroscience, and neuroimaging. Students explore brain anatomy, neural signalling, cognitive processes, and diseases. Courses cover neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and research methods. Practical lab work and research experience are often integral. Skills needed include analytical thinking and a solid foundation in biology and chemistry. Career opportunities include neuroscientist, clinical neuropsychologist, neurology consultant, pharmaceutical researcher, and science communicator, with advanced degrees leading to specialized roles and research.
