If you need to give a thank you speech, you must be receiving an award or you're being publicly honored—congratulations! If you’ve never given a speech like this before, you're probably a bit nervous, but we're here to help you with that. In this article, we'll walk you through how to craft the perfect thank you speech for any occasion. We'll also include tips on how to connect with your audience so your gratitude comes across loud and clear. To get started on writing a speech that will be remembered and cherished, scroll on down!

Things You Should Know

  • Begin the speech by expressing your gratitude for being honored and your appreciation for the people who are honoring you.
  • List a few people by name who played a crucial role in your success. If you have a brief story or highlight from your experience, share it with the audience.
  • End the speech with something inspirational or dedicate the award to someone special if you feel moved to do so.
  • Write the speech on a note card and bring it with you if you need to. Be sure to practice your speech ahead of time so you feel confident and prepared.

words of gratitude speech for stakeholders

  • The type of honor you're receiving. To give thanks for an award or professional honor, say something like "I'm so honored to be here tonight, and grateful to be the recipient of this award."
  • The formality of the event. If it's a more casual event, like an anniversary party thrown by your friends and family, your expression of thanks can be a bit warmer. For example, you could say "I can't express how grateful I am to have all of you here with us tonight."

Step 2 Express appreciation for the people honoring you.

  • If you're being honored by your company, talk about the great work the organization does, and what a pleasure it is to work there.
  • If you're receiving an award from an outside party, like an arts organization awarding you for a film you directed, talk about how honored you are to be recognized by such a great organization.
  • If you're giving a speech to thank friends and family for honoring you, say a few words about what a special group of people you're lucky to have in your life.

Step 3 Tell a funny or poignant story.

  • You could tell a story about a funny mishap that happened during a big project you worked on, or an obstacle you had to overcome to accomplish your goals.
  • Try to bring other people into the story, too, instead of just talking about yourself. Talk about something that involves your coworkers, your boss, your kids, or other people in the audience.
  • If you want, you can start your speech with this story and build up to your thank yous.

Step 4 Mention the names of people who’ve helped you.

  • You can introduce the list by saying, "I'm especially grateful to a few amazing people whose support is the reason I'm up here right now." Then recite the list of people who helped you.
  • Take the audience into consideration, too. If you know your boss will be sitting in the front row, you might want to make sure you thank them.
  • This part of thank you speeches can often get tedious. Don't leave anyone important off of your list, but don't list everyone you know, either. Keep it limited to people who actually helped you.
  • Watch speeches from award shows like the Oscars or Emmys for inspiration on how to gracefully thank multiple people.

Step 5 End it on a high note.

  • Say something inspirational. If you're accepting an award for achievements you made for the nonprofit you work for, you could say, "Our work is far from over, but what we've accomplished together has made a difference in hundreds of people's lives. Let's roll up our sleeves and continue this journey with more dedication than ever. If we've made this much progress in just one year, think what we can do in three."
  • Dedicate the honor. You can give special appreciation to a loved one or mentor by dedicating your award to that person. Say something like, "And lastly, I want to dedicate this award to my mother. When my teachers told her they thought my dyslexia would prevent me from ever learning to read, she scoffed and told them I'd be a brilliant writer one day. It's because of her faith in me that I'm up here today accepting my first Pulitzer. I love you, mom."

Step 1 Write out your notes.

  • Don't write out the speech word for word. When you deliver it, you'll be looking down at the paper the whole time instead of addressing the audience. You'll come off as nervous and stiff instead of sincerely grateful.
  • Alternatively, if there is a phrase or sentiment that you want to make sure you get absolutely right, write out that part in full. Practice this part so that you can say it smoothly.
  • Try writing out just the first line of each paragraph you want to say. Then, when you glance down at your card, that first line will jog your memory.

Step 2 Time yourself to ensure your speech isn’t too long.

  • As a general rule acceptance speeches are very short. Acceptance speeches for Academy Awards, for example, are limited to 45 seconds or less. Going over two or three minutes is going to end up boring people, so no matter what, aim to keep it to the point.
  • When you practice your speech, set a timer to see how long it takes. You might want to record yourself so you can listen to the speech and identify parts you can shave off if your speech is too long. The most essential part of the speech is the expression of gratitude; the rest can be lopped if necessary.

Step 3 Practice in front of someone who makes you nervous.

  • Solicit feedback from the people listening to your speech. Ask them which parts drag on too long, or if there's anything you didn't say that should be included.
  • Make sure you deliver the speech to at least one person you trust to give you totally honest feedback.

Step 4 Replace filler words with pauses.

  • To help yourself eliminate the filler words, listen to a recording of yourself talking. Try to catch the spots where you tend to fill in the blank with "um" or "uh." Practice saying those lines without filler until you're able to deliver the whole speech that way.

Step 5 Work on looking and sounding natural.

  • Try visualizing yourself delivering the speech without stumbling. Imagine the room in as much detail as you can. If you know who will be in the audience, pretend that they are there as you practice. Deliver the whole thing in your head without a hiccup. This technique can help you feel less anxious when it comes to the real thing.
  • Some people find it helps to laugh heartily before giving a speech. It puts you in a more relaxed mood.
  • If you have the opportunity to do some vigorous exercise before the event, that's another great way to release nervous energy.

Step 2 Make eye contact with audience members.

  • Making eye contact will help you deliver the speech with more feeling. You can pretend like you're giving it to a friend, rather than a faceless crowd of people.
  • Rotating between more than one person is important. When you look at more than one spot in the audience, the whole group will feel more included in what you're saying.

Step 3 Keep your speech focused on gratitude.

  • If it's possible to look at the people you're thanking as you say their names, try to do so. For example, if you're thanking a colleague who's sitting in the first row, your gratitude will be more apparent if you're able to focus on her while you're talking.
  • Don't be embarrassed if you tear up a little. It happens all the time during thank you speeches.

Step 4 End your speech with one last “Thank you.”

  • When the event is over, people may approach you to say positive things about your speech. Be sure to thank them and give them a few moments of your time.

Business thank you speech

Let's write an employee appreciation speech.

By:  Susan Dugdale  | Last modified: 04-21-2021

There'll be those times, (hopefully a lot of them: many, many more than once a year on Employee Appreciation Day ), when as an employer or a manager you want to formally thank your team for a job well done in a speech.

To help you do that, here's an example employee appreciation, or business thank you, speech to use as a template. It covers off all the areas you'll most likely want to comment on or acknowledge.

At the bottom of the page, under the speech, you'll find a printable of the template to download.  I hope it's useful to you!

Graphic: Employee Appreciation quote. Text: Take time to appreciate employees and they will reciprocate in a thousand ways. Bob Nelson.

How to make this speech work best for you

If you've never given a thank you speech of this type before the best place to begin is by reading my notes on the benefits of giving thanks, and the most effective way to do it. Once you've done that you'll be ready to get maximum benefit from the template for your staff, your company, and yourself.

Be specific, direct, generous and frequent with your thanks

Thank you. They're two simple, yet extraordinarily powerful, words.

Studies show regularly and sincerely showing appreciation and gratitude for all the positive efforts employees make delivers benefits to employers and employees alike.  And focused specific acknowledgement is even much more effective than generalized.

The benefits of giving thanks include:

  • Increased job satisfaction leading to increased motivation, innovation and productivity
  • Increased loyalty which in turn means less loss of staff
  • Increased happiness and health for everyone in the work place, in their homes, and communities.

For more please see leader of the O.C. Tanner Institute, David Sturt's, article for Harvard Business Review:  The Easiest Thing You Can Do to Be a Great Boss ,  outlining the results of "two separate but recent studies involving nearly 3,500 employees, from startups to Fortune 100 companies."

And this article:  Giving thanks can make you happier  from Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School.

Do you know the difference between generalized and specific praise?

To make what you say count, to make it stick in minds and memories, praise, thanks and acknowledgement needs to be specific.

For example saying, "Thanks everyone for a job well done.", while pleasant, is generalized.

Who does it really apply to? What is the job being referred to?  Is everyone being praised regardless of the size and value of their contribution? Even the guy in accounts who bunked off as soon as he thought no one was looking?

The comment, although nice, is wide open. And because it is so broad, it is easily discounted as having very little value.

Contrast that with: "Thanks Robbie. Those extra hours you put in night after night for two whole weeks last March to get to the bottom of the problem with our analysis of data from the laboratories were a life saver. Your effort got the job back on track. We couldn't be more grateful for your perseverance and initiative."

This is significantly better.  You've let Robbie know his work is being seen and valued.

You've also let others listening know which is important for his self-esteem. To be a member of a group where excellence is openly and genuinely acknowledged makes everybody feel proud. This is effective, memorable praise. Something worth striving for.

We are people, and we want, and need, to be acknowledged by the significant folk in our lives: work, friends and family, for what we do well.

These are your next 7 steps:

1. Read the speech through to get an idea of what is covered, and how.

2. Scroll to the foot of the page to download the speech template.

3. Take sections out or, add pieces in, to fit your own situation.  For instance, you may not want to talk about challenges. So that section is cut out.

4. Replace all the purple highlighted words inside the brackets eg.  { Fill in project(s) name here. Example:  Data Digitization Project}  with what you want to say about your company and your people.

Please note - Some of the speech segments start with an explanation. These have been highlighted in light green and are not part of the speech itself. Eg:  Add a brief description of at least one of the challenges endured.

5. Once you have completed everything, say the speech out loud and record it.

6. Play it back and listen for any areas where you need to make changes. For instance:

  • Do the transitions work?
  • Are you repeating yourself?
  • Have you missed an important section out?
  • Have you mentioned everybody you can and have you been clear about why they are being called out?
  • Is the language too formal? Or too informal?
  • Is it too long?

7. Make all of the changes needed. Then record your speech once more and listen again. Repeat the process until you are satisfied.

Example business thank you speech

Friends and colleagues,

We all know why we are here today, so I'm beginning with the obvious: a simple, heartfelt, and well-deserved THANK YOU!

For those of you who took on the {Fill in project(s) name here. Example: Data Digitization Project} , I couldn't be more grateful! {Name some people you want to acknowledge specifically here. Example: Sandy, Darren and Joe} I know it wasn't easy at times.

Add a brief description of at least one of the challenges endured.

Standing on your feet all day on the cold concrete floor of {Change name to fit. Example: ABCD's Record room} instead of sitting at your desks in our warm, comfortably cozy and friendly {Change name to fit. Example: Quest} office, isn't anybody's idea of fun.

Change championship

Acknowledge the knock-on effect: how everybody, even those indirectly involved, was asked to accommodate and adapt for the duration of the project.

The same gratitude goes to those of you who were on this project part time. Thank you for taking time away from your other important tasks so that we could keep pace with our customer's goals and deadlines on this one.

Whether it was cooperating through {Enter specific examples of ways people worked to allow the project to go on. Examples: carpooling like Jo and Liz, Mike and Bob offering to double up on a few of the more tedious tasks, or simply through putting in some extra unexpected time that the project demanded like Fred and his two faithful side kicks: Dawn and Bruce,} , your efforts were appreciated.

Accountability

Acknowledging how responsibly the project was undertaken and the effect that had.

Through all of you coming in day after day and always putting your best foot forward, we were able to achieve so much. At the same time our client was assured of our commitment to the highest quality of work.

We did this by {Enter specific examples to illustrate. Examples: following the strict quality work standards set by Bill's team, being willing to work closely and cooperatively to fill in any gaps that arose, (Yes, that's a nod to Rose for stepping in.) , taking the initiative to go back over some aspect of the work that occasionally required double-checking. (Thanks Hugh.)}

I want you to know they are delighted with the accuracy we achieved. Without your shared pride and accountability, we simply could not have been so satisfactorily, so triumphantly, successful.

Acknowledging how people worked together.

As is true with any project encompassing so many different aspects, there were some ups and downs, but that's to be expected. Whether {Enter specific examples of team work. Examples: someone needed help analyzing, or data compilation was falling behind, or someone simply needed a ride to or from the office} ... everyone pulled together and worked as a team.

I know how much time and energy this assignment demanded, and I deeply appreciate all of your efforts, both individually, and collectively.

Customer focus

Acknowledging the result of satisfying/fulfilling the customer's need.

Merely completing this project was a hurdle in and of itself. However, congratulations are in order to each and everyone of you for a job so well done!

We've always known about your willingness to consistently go above and beyond. Now our client has experienced it too.

In fact, they are so satisfied they are currently in the process of retaining our services for another project!

Very few things speak more loudly about a company than a client wanting to be a repeat customer. So, not only can each of you be very proud of yourselves but we can all be proud that everyone on the {Enter the name of your company here. Example: Quest} Team will continue to benefit as a result of your contributions!

Thank you all, sincerely, for being true professionals, for being inspirational! You are a great team. This successful outcome, the result of all your hard work and dedication, is down to you. And, lastly thank you for the pleasure and privilege of working with you! Congratulations, once again!

"Saying 'thank you' to acknowledge or encourage desired behaviors at work is very effective, and a form of what’s called positive reinforcement.

Research has proven top performing teams and leaders give each other more than five positive comments for every criticism.

Acknowledging good behavior and actions actually reinforces and drives more good behavior. Goodness becomes self-perpetuating!

It’s also proven that positive reinforcement is more effective at changing behavior then dishing out negative feedback.

This holds true for both your colleagues, direct reports, and YES even your Boss. So, say 'thank you' more often through a speech, email, card, or private conversation.

* The story behind this business thank you speech

It arrived one day through my contact form - almost in the form it is now. A complete speech, from a complete stranger!

I emailed him to thank him for his thank you speech, and to ask if I could post it on my site. This is what he said:

Ms. Dugdale,

You're welcome for the contribution. Truth be told, as I was writing what I needed to be a "business" or "professional" type thank you speech, I was scouring the web for some well-placed anecdotes, tips to improve upon, or general all-around good advice to include in a thank you speech.

Surprisingly, incredibly difficult to find. Google may churn out billions of "results," but none were applicable. So, as I continued to compose my own, I happened across your website. I found it helpful in terms of examples of speech writing structure, some main points to include, etc.

Long story short, when I had finished it the other night, I just thought I'd pass it on when I saw that that was an option on your useful website. You may certainly post it as a "sample business thank you speech" on your page if you wish. Since, as I said above, they were incredibly difficult to come by.

If it helps someone else who, perhaps, has never written anything like that before and now finds themselves in the position of needing to, I'd be glad if my example could help them.

It seemed fitting to send it to you after using some of your tips to help me complete it.

Thank you for your rather enthusiastic reply! It was both a surprise and a delight for me. I'm glad to hear my speech brought a smile to your face too :)

Kind regards,

How to Write a Great Thank You Script (With an Example Script)

Beginner , Donor Communication

September 30, 2022

By Jeremy Reis

When you’re raising money for a cause, it’s important to show your donors how much their support means to you. A great way to do this is by writing a thank you script . By taking the time to craft a thoughtful and well-written thank you script, you can show your donors just how much their support means to you and your cause. Here are a few tips to help you write a great thank you script:

1. Start by expressing your gratitude.

words of gratitude speech for stakeholders

2. Keep it short and sweet.

When writing a thank you script, it’s important to keep it short and sweet. You don’t want to bombard your donor with too much information or try to sell them on anything else. Just simply express your gratitude and let them know how much their support means to you and your cause. After all, the whole point of writing a thank you script is to show your appreciation, not try to get something else from them.

3. Personalize it.

Another great tip for writing a thank you script is to personalize it as much as possible. This means addressing the donor by name and letting them know how their specific donation will be used. For example, “Your donation of $50 will go towards buying new school supplies for our students.” This helps the donor feel like their contribution is making a real and tangible difference.

4. Be sincere and genuine.

Donors can spot a phoney thank you a mile away, so it’s important to make sure your script is sincere and genuine. The best way to do this is to focus on why the donor made the gift in the first place. Was it because they believe in your mission? Were they moved by a particular story or client experience? Whatever the reason, make sure your thank you message reflects this sentiment. This authenticity will go a long way in solidifying relationships with your donors .

5. Show appreciation for all gifts, large and small.

All gifts should be treated with equal importance and appreciation, regardless of their size. This shows donors that their gift is valuable no matter what its monetary worth may be, and that their support is appreciated regardless of how much they are able to give financially. By showing appreciation for all gifts, large and small, you send a strong message of gratitude that will resonate with donors of all levels of giving .

Example Script

Hi, my name is Jane Smith and I’m the development officer for ABC Charity. I’m calling to say thank you for your donation of $500 to our annual fundraising campaign.

Thank you so much for your support of our organization! We are truly grateful for your gift of $_____ . Your generous contribution will help us to _______ .

I wanted to share with you some of the specific ways that your donation will be used. For example, _______ . I think you’ll be pleased to know that ___________ . This is really going to make a difference in the lives of ___________ . Thank you so much for making this possible!

We are so grateful for your support. People like you are the heart and soul of our organization. We simply couldn’t do what we do without people like you. Thank you so much for your support.

I’ll be sure to keep you updated on how your donation is making a difference. In the meantime, if you have any questions or if there’s anything else I can do, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Thanks again for your support! I really appreciate it. Have a great day!

A strong thank you script is an essential tool for any fundraiser looking to build strong relationships with their donors. By following these tips, you can write a great thank you script that will show your donors just how much their support means to you and your cause!

How to Write a Meaningful Thank You Note

  • Christopher Littlefield

words of gratitude speech for stakeholders

Sample messages from common workplace scenarios.

Many of us fear expressing our thanks to others. We might worry that our efforts will be misinterpreted or make the person on the receiving end uncomfortable. Or we might struggle to find the right words to express how we feel. Here’s how to do it right.

  • Keep it genuine : The goal of expressing appreciation should be to let someone know how their actions have impacted you and/or others. If you have any other agenda, your message will not be authentic.
  • Share what you appreciate and why : Focus on the impact their actions had on you and explain both  what you appreciate and why . This will help the other person understand the reason you feel the way you do.
  • Send it : E-mails get lost and handwritten cards get saved. Write your message on a piece of paper, post-it note, or card and give it directly to the person. If you are at work, you can also leave it on their desk or in their “mailbox.”

We all want to be appreciated. Whether you’ve accepted a task while your plate is already full, worked through weekends to get a project off the ground, or simply been there for a work friend when they needed your support, an acknowledgement or “thank you” can go a long way in making us feel good about the efforts we put in — and the research supports this.

Giving a thank you speech is not just good manners but gives an insight into your character. The acknowledgement only works if it comes from the heart and rings genuine.

So, how do you give a thank you speech?

Let’s jump into it!

Table of Contents

When is it appropriate to give a thank you speech?

In a company, at an award function, for friends and family, structure of the opening statement, thanking the speakers after the event, thanking the organization, thanking the organization team, have you missed anyone, concluding your thank you speech, mention people by name, positive ending, get it over with.

You don’t really need an occasion to thank somebody. However, in a more formal setting, there may be occasions that specifically call for it. The following are the times when it is most appropriate to give a thank you speech:

  • After getting a promotion
  • After celebrating an achievement
  • Appreciating your team after tackling a tough project
  • When receiving an award or recognition
  • When establishing a new venture

The list can go on endlessly as your field might have different occasions to give a vote of thanks. Make sure not to miss any opportunity to acknowledge the reasonable efforts of the people around you!

Things to keep in mind

When you’ve decided to give a thank you speech, you need to keep a couple of things in mind. This advice differs according to why you are giving a thank you speech and who is in your audience.

If your company is celebrating you for a milestone or recognition of hard work, make sure you don’t only talk about yourself.

Be generous with your words when talking about the company itself and the great work it does.

Elaborate on how much you enjoy working here and what exactly the company does the right to make it happen.

This will make sure your higher-ups feel appreciated for the work environment they’ve created.

If you are receiving an award by a third party for your work, make sure you adequately express how honored you will be selected.

It is always a good idea to highlight what a recognized organization it is and how you are happy to be a part of it.

If you’re giving a speech to thank friends and family, the setting is much more intimate. You can drop the formalities and talk about how special these people are to you.

As they have gone the extra mile to appreciate you, make sure you return the favor by talking about how lucky you are to have them and their support.

How to write a thank-you speech?

There is no need to beat around the bush with a thank you speech. You can simply start off by expressing gratitude.

An award or recognition means that you can simply open by thanking the company or organization for the honor.

You don’t need to come armed with quotes. In fact, that might actually seem much more disingenuous. Your opening statement also sets the tone for the rest of your speech.

Some factors might determine how formal or informal you need to be with your opening:

In a formal setting, it is best to keep it cordial. Assuming it is a suit and tie event, most people are dressed up and expecting you to keep it classy as well.

As such, we recommend you go for something along the lines of, “I’m so honored to be taking up this renowned stage. Words cannot express how grateful I feel to be the recipient of this award.”

An informal event can be anything from an intimate gathering of loved ones to anniversary parties of a broader range of friends.

In such an event, you can express yourself more freely and don’t have to hold back.

We suggest opening with something along the lines of, “I can’t believe my luck on being able to be surrounded by such wonderful people. I’m immensely

grateful for each and every one of you and honored to be taking up the stage tonight.”

We have drafted a script for your opening statement. Feel free to customize it as per your needs.

Good evening, Distinguished [name], Honorable [name], Mr. Chairman, Respect Host/Hostess, and all our beloved guests.

It is my honor and privilege to have been given the opportunity to present a vote of thanks on this momentous occasion.

I am honored to represent [Company/Organization] on this prestigious [Event] stage.

I’d like to give a respectful nod to the entire [other supporting/sponsoring organization, team, crew, special guests present in the audience] that have stood behind me to make this possible.

My gratitude extends to all the speakers as well as organizers and hosts due to whom we’ve all come together on this eventful night.

Another possible scenario as a host is that you might have to thank the line of speakers that took up the stage during an event. Please find and customize the script for this as follows:

Let’s hear a big round of applause for [name speaker], His/her incredible delivery on [speech topic] leaves us all leaving this Event a little more aware.

Pick up on the central theme and reiterate it as a reminder to the audience and to show the speaker that you were paying attention.

If there are more speakers, then follow suit and consider using these thank you examples:

I’d like to thank our second speaker [name speaker] for her take on [speech topic]. Her view on [central theme] was poignant and worthy of a big round of applause.

Furthermore, let’s also express a sincere appreciation for [name speaker] for gracing our stage with her strong opinions on [speech topic]. [Refer to central theme]

Following up, I’d like to thank [name speaker] for providing such an in-depth analysis of [speech topic]. [Reference]

We are grateful to [name speaker] for having the audience in stitches with her insightful yet light-hearted presentation. [Reference].

I would like to hear a resounding round of applause for [name speaker] for his/her inspirational speech that has surely revved up our drive to achieve more.

We are lucky to have the opportunity to listen to your craft and are leaving here today, all inspired by your beautiful words!

This script is for when you need to express appreciation for the organization that is holding this event. It is usually added to the end of a speech. Feel free to edit it as required.

And last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to [organization] for allowing us to use their beautiful venue.

Our utmost thanks to the logistic support that made this Event the smooth success that it has been. Our appreciation further extends to the technical team and organizers who’ve worked tirelessly for this [fun] evening.

In the case of sponsors: I would also like to extend my thanks to [brand name] as well as [brand name] for their enormous cooperation in making this Event possible.

Mix and match these various styles so that it doesn’t get repetitive as you speak.

As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Such is the case with this Event as well. There have been many people working for weeks across multiple group chats and meetings to make this possible.

Getting every detail right and lining up one after other fantastic speakers. Our biggest thank you to the dedicated organizing team for working on every tiny detail and helping create this amazing Event.

I cannot thank everyone enough for their involvement. Each and every one of you is to be credited for your dedication and the willingness to take on the completion outside the realm of their comfort zones!

Read the room and decide the degree of the flair of formality that needs to be adjusted. People will be happy that their efforts are being recognized. Just make sure not to be too ostentatious about it.

The only thing that is worse than not being appreciated for your work is being singled out or left out.

Make sure you think hard about all the people that have put in their time and effort. Are you sure you haven’t missed anybody? How about anybody from the following list?

  • People who sent out invitations
  • Special guests who made time for the Event
  • People behind the technical arrangements
  • The team responsible for location hunting, stage setting and lighting
  • Any musicians or other performing entertainers
  • People in the catering team
  • People from the press and media who are covering the Event

Now all your thank you speech needs is a neat bow to tie it up cleanly. Try this on for size:

Mr. Chairman, ladies, and gentlemen, I would like to thank all of you for being a wonderful audience.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have such a delightful crowd presence. Once again, I’d like to give a big round of applause to all of the speakers for gracing our stage with their well-refined speeches. One last round of applause for all of us here, thank you very much!

Extra Tips to Keep in Mind

While we’ve covered most of our tips, sometimes the simple things can get away from us. And you know what they say, “Better safe than sorry.” So here they are:

A handy tip for appreciation versus criticism is this: When acknowledging people for their good work, always use their name, however, when handing out criticism in front of a crowd, try to generalize as otherwise, you will end up embarrassing people.

Instead of simply thanking your team, use their names if possible in the given time limit. This will make your appreciation seem much more personalized.

Make a list of all the people you’d genuinely like to thank. If you have time, briefly talk about how they’ve helped you in your journey.

Emphasize how important they’ve been and how. Speak from the heart, and it will definitely ring true.

For phrasing, try something along the lines of:

“From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to give a special thanks to some of the amazing people without whom I cannot imagine standing up here on this stage. Name your supporters and give out your sincere thanks.

If you have extra time, you might want to add in a few lines to thank your supervisor or boss as well. It is customary to make sure they don’t feel left out.

It can be challenging to achieve this as we’re sure any crowd consists of so many people that someone is bound to feel left out.

Your goal is, don’t leave out any of the higher-ups and the important people. But don’t start listing just about everybody just because they are in the crowd. This can reduce the impact of your gratitude for people who have actually helped you.

You’ve given your thanks to so many people who’ve made you who you are. The stage has gotten quite emotional at this point, and your audience is looking at you.

You need to end on a high note. If you simply say your thanks and leave, it can feel incomplete and lacking.

Try to say something inspirational and uplifting. Suppose you’re being recognized for your work.

In that case, you can give your team a motivational boost by saying, “The journey is not yet over, but I can’t imagine being on this ride with any team that is more dedicated or competent than the one at [name].

Let’s wear these tires out and keep this smooth ride going!”

You can also go for dedication to your strongest support or mentor. Something like, “And lastly, I want to leave you with the words of my strongest support, my [name].

When I was full of doubts and insecurities, they’re the ones who said [something inspirational].

This award is for you and your belief in me. I hope I’ve made you proud. Thank you for everything!”

We know, we know, this is your moment on stage. After all, this is such an honor, and there are so many people to thank.

But your audience is eager to get to the catering table! Be considerate, and keep it clear but brief. You don’t want to take the audience through your entire journey.

A good thank you speech is no longer than two and at most three minutes. Use your time well and remember: It is always better to leave them wanting more than getting them to be like, “Get it over with already!”

Stakeholder Communications: Thank-you letter example

words of gratitude speech for stakeholders

Updated June 2023

There are tons of examples of great thank-you letters to stakeholder donors. You probably have a bunch in your tax receipts file -- I know I do. But after decades of writing recommendation letters for students seeking admission to undergraduate and graduate programs, I've never gotten an acknowledgment letter anywhere near as good as the one I received the other day from The University of South Carolina School of Law .

words of gratitude speech for stakeholders

6 Traits of an effective acknowledgment letter

Let's look at why this letter is an example you should follow when you want to say thanks for something the "donor" isn't even expecting acknowledgment for:

The friendly and conversational voice sets the tone, helps me relate to the writer and feels authentic. For instance: Dr. Britton's hope that I'm "settling into a satisfying routine" exhibits empathy and creates a connection unlike the standard "I hope this finds you well" (which I'm trying super hard to stop using, btw), and "personal contact with applicants was almost nonexistent" sounds like something a real person would say.

2. Ideas & Details

The call to action -- to send other candidates their way -- is clear and reasonable. Dr. Britton includes sufficient detail to help me see how recommendations like mine help her and her team, like:

  • Evidence: "The 214 members of our 2021 entering class were selected from 1,746 applicants are are from 26 states..." and "...our class came to South Carolina Law from 86 undergraduate institutions..."
  • Explanations: "These recommendations are always useful, but in a year in which personal contact with applicants was almost nonexistent, your perspective on candidates who could contribute to our law school community was invaluable." and "Our law school relies on individuals like you, who know our candidates well and can help us understand and fully appreciate their strengths and abilities."

3. Organization

The letter starts with gratitude and empathy, transitions into data that create context for why my recommendation was important and shows off how competitive admissions are and closes with more gratitude, and closes with a clear call to action.

4. Word choice

Another reason I love "settling into a satisfying routine" is because it acknowledges that we are still living in "challenging times" without using that over-used term. The language is clear, simple and devoid of legalese , which reinforces the friendly voice and relatability.

5. Sentence fluency

Dr. Britton uses a mix of sentence patterns and lengths to create a flow within and between paragraphs that influences the conversational tone and makes the letter an easy read.

6. Conventions & Formatting

The letter is centered on the page and the ragged right margin makes the long-ish line length easier to manage. My only quibble here is the date. I got this letter, dated September 30, on September 25.

After reading the letter, I felt really good about a school I admit wasn't on my radar until my friend decided to apply there. I learned more about it then and had a favorable impression, which was solidified by Dr. Britton's letter.

Understanding Gratitude

Research has shown that practicing gratitude has numerous benefits for our well-being. It improves our mental health, strengthens our relationships, and enhances our resilience and optimism. By expressing gratitude, we can create a positive ripple effect in our lives and the lives of those around us.

  • Begin with a warm greeting: Start your speech by acknowledging the audience and expressing your gratitude for their presence.

The Impact of Gratitude on Oneself

Practicing gratitude has a profound impact on our own well-being. It enhances our self-awareness and self-esteem, allowing us to recognize our own strengths and accomplishments. Gratitude also increases our mindfulness and present moment awareness, helping us savor the joys of life and find contentment in the present.

Furthermore, gratitude cultivates a positive mindset. By focusing on the good in our lives, we train our brains to see the positive aspects of every situation. This positivity not only improves our mental health but also attracts more positivity into our lives.

The Impact of Gratitude on Others

Expressing gratitude not only benefits ourselves but also has a profound impact on the people around us. When we express appreciation, we strengthen our relationships and social connections. Our words of gratitude make others feel valued and appreciated, deepening the bond between us.

Gratitude also promotes empathy and compassion. When we acknowledge the contributions of others, we develop a greater understanding of their experiences and challenges. This empathy allows us to offer support and kindness, creating a positive and supportive environment for everyone.

Incorporating Gratitude into Daily Life

To make gratitude a part of your daily life, consider incorporating these practices:

  • Gratitude journaling: Set aside a few minutes each day to write down things you are grateful for. This practice helps shift your focus towards the positive aspects of your life.
  • Expressing appreciation through handwritten notes or messages: Take the time to write a heartfelt note or message to someone you appreciate. Your words will have a lasting impact and show the depth of your gratitude.
  • Engaging in acts of kindness and gratitude towards others: Look for opportunities to show kindness and gratitude to those around you. Small gestures, such as offering a helping hand or a kind word, can make a big difference.

Gratitude is a powerful tool for fostering social emotional learning and enhancing our well-being. Thank You To Our Stakeholders

We were pleased to host another successful stakeholders' tea yesterday in our Treble Clef Chef room.  The informal event had a festive feel with background music provided by two of our talented music pupils.  Guests were able to network with each other and members of the senior prefect team as well as teaching staff, the senior leadership team, governors and trustees.  Head Boy Harry Stoneman and Head Girl Ella Williams concluded the event by giving a speech thanking our stakeholders, governors, trustees and staff for the ongoing support they give to the school.  One of our longstanding stakeholders commented: "It was good meeting a few new faces from the school and other people who give up their time, plus ones I knew. The students hosting us were great too."

Thank you to all of our stakeholders for the time and expertise you give the school.

I stand by my words; truth can be expunged in Modi's world: Rahul Gandhi

 alt=

New Delhi: A defiant Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said truth can be expunged in the world of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but not in reality, hours after significant parts of his Lok Sabha speech were deleted by the chair. "Whatever I had to say, I have said and that is the truth. They can expunge as much as they want, but the truth will prevail," Gandhi told reporters in Parliament complex.

The Congress leader was responding to questions on certain remarks he made during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address in the Lok Sabha on Monday. "Truth can be expunged in the world of Modi ji, but in reality truth cannot be expunged," Gandhi said.

In his first speech as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi launched a no-holds-barred attack on the BJP, accusing the leaders of the ruling party of dividing people on communal lines. Gandhi's remarks drew massive protests from the treasury benches and a rare intervention from the prime minister, who slammed the Congress leader for calling the entire Hindu community violent.

"It is not just one religion that talks about courage. In fact, all our religions talk about courage," Gandhi said in Lok Sabha. Holding up pictures of Lord Shiva, Guru Nanak, and Jesus Christ, he referred to Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism and Jainism to underline the importance of fearlessness. He also cited the attributes of Lord Shiva and teachings of Guru Nanak, Jesus Christ, Buddha, and Mahavir to state that all religions and great people of the country have said "daro mat, darao mat (do not be scared, do not scare others). Shivji says daro mat, darao mat ... talks about ahimsa..."

As the treasury bench members stood up in protest, Gandhi slammed the BJP, saying, "Aap Hindu ho hi nahi (You are not Hindus). It is clearly written in Hinduism that one should stand with the truth and not back down from the truth or be scared of it," he said. Modi, intervening into Gandhi's speech, said, "This issue is very serious. Calling the entire Hindu community violent is a serious issue." Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah sought the Congress leader's apology to the House and the country for hurting the feelings of crores of people who take pride in identifying themselves as Hindus.

5 takeaways from the first Trump-Biden 2024 debate

The president stumbled repeatedly, and the former president made false claims repeatedly.

President Biden and former president Donald Trump faced off in the first of two 2024 presidential debates Thursday night in Atlanta.

The unusually early first debate came as Biden appears to struggle in the rematch of the 2020 campaign and as Republicans are buoyant about Trump’s chances. But polls suggest it’s still a close race in the key states.

So what did we learn? And what marked the first big clash between the two candidates?

Below are our takeaways.

1. Biden was rough

Perhaps the biggest question heading into the night was how Biden would manage, given voters’ strong concerns about his age and sharpness, as well as his campaign’s previous reluctance to debate.

Biden gave an energetic State of the Union address in March. But it didn’t appear to allay many of those concerns, and jousting with an opponent at a debate — rather than giving a scripted speech — is a different animal.

Thursday wasn’t as strong a performance. At points, it was downright rough.

Biden came out raspy and with relatively little vigor or inflection in his voice. He stumbled over his words and lines of argument. Perhaps the most striking example came as he tried to make an early point about health care, failing to finish his thought before his time was up.

“[We’re] making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I’ve been able to do with —” Biden said, before trailing off and adding, “the covid — excuse me, with — dealing with everything we have to do with — look — if — we finally beat Medicare.”

It’s at this point that the moderator said his time was up.

Later on, while talking about the border, Biden said, “I’m going to continue to move until we get the total ban on the — the total initiative, relative to what we can do with more Border Patrol and more asylum officers.”

Trump shot back, “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said either.”

Later in the debate, Biden sought to get a little feistier, referring to Trump as a “whiner” over his statements that Capitol riot defendants were too harshly treated. He called him a “loser” and a “child.” But the points didn’t land with much force, just like much of Biden’s performance.

Shortly after the debate, Democrats set about fretting about Biden’s candidacy in a way we haven’t seen before — one top former Biden White House aide called his performance “ really disappointing ” — and the worries will probably continue in the days ahead.

2. Biden got some rare traction on Jan. 6, Trump’s legal problems

If there were good moments for Biden, it’s when the conversation turned to democracy; the Jan. 6 , 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol; and Trump’s legal problems.

Biden made a point to highlight Trump’s felony convictions — “The only person on the stage who’s a convicted felon right now is the man I’m looking at right now” — and cite the substance of the former president’s other problems. He mentioned “sex with a porn star” (the underlying alleged event in Trump’s Manhattan conviction) and “molesting a woman in public” (which Trump has been found liable for in the E. Jean Carroll civil case).

Biden also sought to put Trump on the spot over his suggestions that Jan. 6 defendants have been persecuted, something the American people broadly disagree with.

“The idea that those people are patriots? Come on,” Biden said.

Toward the end, Biden told Trump that following his 2020 loss — after which he sought to overturn the results, leading to two of his indictments — “something snapped in you.”

Trump didn’t have great responses, except to cite his claims that his cases have been brought by a weaponized justice system — something that, like Jan. 6 pardons, Americans aren’t on board with . He didn’t really stand by his past comments about Jan. 6 pardons. At one point, he felt compelled to deny having had sex with Stormy Daniels (“I didn’t have sex with a porn star, number one,” he said.)

While Trump’s Manhattan conviction doesn’t appear to have hurt him much so far, it’s also evident that many Americans — especially casual watchers of politics — are unfamiliar with many of these specifics .

But this was largely the exception. Despite Biden’s hopes to turn the 2024 election into a choice and even a referendum on Trump, much of the debate wound up focusing on Biden.

3. Trump unleashed many false claims

It’s no surprise at this point, but Trump’s performance included his usual stream of false and misleading claims.

They included his false claim to having capped insulin costs before Biden did ; blue states executing babies after birth ; there being no terrorist attacks on his watch ; Biden’s wanting to quadruple people’s taxes; and Biden’s having indicted him. (There is no evidence of Biden’s involvement in the cases.)

Biden had a few, too, including at one point mixing up when Trump was accused of having his tryst with Daniels. (He said Melania Trump was pregnant; in fact, she had a young child).

4. A great debate it wasn’t

There were plenty of questions before the debate about whether the format would work. In addition to being very early, the debate featured no audience and a mute button if the candidates talked over one another.

The format mostly worked okay. But that didn’t make it a great debate.

Whether because of the mute button or not, we avoided a replay of the messy food fight of a first 2020 debate . The candidates seemed to understand that talking when it wasn’t their turn wouldn’t do any good.

The lack of an audience also meant they weren’t playing to a crowd — and the crowd wasn’t influencing the affair.

But even without all the shouting and theater, the debate was hardly a substantial master class. It really didn’t get into much of a contrast on the issues.

Trump largely filibustered, repeating his false claims, mostly without fact-checking by Biden and not really at all by the debate moderators (who decided beforehand that it wasn’t their role ). Biden struggled to make his points and drive the contrasts in a way that deprived the proceedings of much flow, though he did counter some of Trump’s claims.

It’s not clear any format could have made for a more compelling debate. Many of the problems traced to the candidates themselves. But it just wasn’t the kind of debate that seems likely to whet people’s appetites for the campaign.

Toward the end of the debate, the two candidates saw fit to argue about their golf games, with Biden talking about his drive and handicap and Trump casting doubt on his ability.

“Let’s not act like children,” Trump eventually said.

“You are a child,” Biden responded.

It was a fitting moment.

5. Trump finally takes an abortion position

Trump has strained to avoid getting pinned down on his abortion position, seeking to say merely that it should be a state’s choice and trying to leave it at that .

But on Thursday night, Trump did — at long last and after blowing his previous deadline for offering a position — finally weigh in on the abortion pill mifepristone .

“First of all, the Supreme Court just approved the abortion pill, and I agree with their decision to have done that, and I will not block it,” Trump said.

The Supreme Court didn’t actually “approve” the abortion pill, instead rejecting a challenge to it based on a technicality.

But it’s a potentially significant statement, given Democrats have cautioned that a second Trump administration could target the abortion pill using an antiquated federal law. It’s the latest signal that Trump fears what restricting abortion in a post- Roe v. Wade world could mean for his candidacy. Imagine even a few years ago that a Republican presidential candidate would say he supports the abortion pill.
