When you've sorted out who you wish to mention and what for, you are ready to begin writing.

Like any other form of speech you need 3 parts:- an opening, the body or middle where you put all your acknowledgments, and a conclusion.

Here's a short example thank you speech for you to see how it could be done. There are many ways covering the required content. This is just one.

The person giving this speech is thanking an organization for giving him an award. 

It is 374 words long. When spoken it will take approximately 2 minutes + to deliver. That's about the right length. It's brief and covers everything needed.

I am here with you: my family, many of my friends and colleagues because I need to say all of that, and then some more.

There's a phrase I'm sure you know: it takes a village to raise a child. In this case it's not a child that's been raised but awareness and a long-needed community resource - the  Parksville Community Literacy Center.  The village behind it and me, is you.

In particular, thank you to my wife Marlene who has always understood and shared my conviction that communities are healthiest when its resources are equally shared, and that the ability to read underpins long term social and economic wellbeing.

I know the hours I spent after work helping to establish our new Center tested her, especially when I was home late, again.

Remarkably she continues to support, and love me.  For that I will always be grateful.

Mary Hill, Catherine Beech and Matthew Fall from the Fred Smith Foundation – thank you for sharing the vision of an integrated community and for being so incredibly supportive. You understood what we were trying to achieve and helped make it possible. Your generous gifts of time, expertise and funds are deeply appreciated.

This award may have my name on it, but in truth it belongs to everybody who has worked to make the center a reality. Have you got a spare day or two? If I called out all those people we'd be here for quite some time! Instead, I'll simply say thank you. You know who you are.

The time and effort you've given ensures that the Parksville people who want it will have access to effective literacy programs and resources. That is a priceless gift.  As Nobel Peace Prize winner former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan said “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

That's not true! Practice completes the process.

1. Content check

Before investing too much time and energy into rehearsing your speech say it through in front of a few trusted friends or colleagues.  It is much, much easier to change text prior to practicing it than after you've begun working with it. Ask them to listen:

• to make sure you've included everyone you should, in the right order and thanked them for the right things.
• for tone. Does the vocabulary fit the occasion? Are the stories right? Is the speech positive? Is it inclusive?

Edit as needed, and then have your test audience listen again. 

Getting the timing right is an essential part of making it a success. Go on too long and people stop listening. Be too brief and there's a danger you've missed things out.

The only way to find out how long your speech is, is to time yourself as you say it out loud at a normal speaking rate. If it's too long, look for areas you can cut. Maybe you need to group a few  more people together or perhaps you need to shorten some of the specific examples about why it is you're thanking someone.  If it's too short, add more detail.  Repeat until you get the length right.

3. Use cue cards

If you're at all worried about forgetting things, losing your place or muddling what you want to say, use cue cards. They'll take the anxiety away.

You can rely on personal anecdotes and the language you use will be more personal. If you’re giving a formal speech in front of colleagues though, your tone will be very different. Your speech will be a lot more structured and concise. 

Step 2: Create an Outline

Whether your appreciation speech is long or short, it’s always a good idea to craft an outline ahead of time. This will help you make sure you don’t forget to mention anything you want to cover. Overall, most speeches will break down like the following:

• Introduction: In an introduction, you will let the audience know who you are and give a preface of what you plan to say. For instance, if you’re recognizing a specific person in an appreciation speech, give a quick rundown of why they’re worthy of appreciation.
• Body: Here, you’ll flesh out the points you made in your introduction. You can give more specific examples of things the subject of your speech has done, and you’ll expand on why those actions deserve gratitude. 
• Conclusion: In this final section, you can reiterate the points you made earlier in the speech. 

Step 3: Grab People’s Attention with Gratitude

Start with a strong opening line. In a more formal speech, a quote about gratitude can be an excellent way to set the tone. In a more casual speech, you can avoid a quote. However, you should still stick with the theme of gratitude.   

Step 4: Be Personal and Specific

In casual and formal speeches alike, you should feel free to be specific. If you’re giving a speech in honor of one person, you can list all of the things they do that deserve appreciation. If you’re thanking other people for their support, you can list the ways they helped you.

Personal anecdotes are a lot more engaging for listeners. They will also help you feel more connected to your material. The more connected you feel, the more confident you’ll be in speaking. These personal anecdotes can be funny, poignant, or a blend of the two. Again, this will largely be dictated by your audience and the setting of your speech.    

Step 5: Practice Makes Perfect

For a casual speech like an appreciation toast, you can probably get away with speaking off the cuff. But any kind of pre-planned appreciation speech definitely benefits from repeated practice.

The more comfortable you are with the speech, the easier it will be for you to deliver it. If you don’t know your speech inside and out, there’s a good chance that you can be tripped up by certain words or turns of phrase. 

Step 6: Time Yourself

When you’re practicing your speech, you should also be timing yourself. This means you should have a stopwatch going while you read your speech aloud. Speeches can be deceptive.

A few pages don’t seem like they should take that long to read. If you only read them over in your head, that can reinforce the notion that your speech isn’t that long. But it takes a lot longer to read something aloud than it does reading it to yourself.

If you don’t practice it out loud ahead of time, you may panic in the middle of your actual delivery. If you fear your speech is taking too long, you might start to read faster and faster, which could make the speech incomprehensible. Practicing it out loud can help you hit your ideal time target without having to rush.   

Step 7: Keep Your Notes Handy

Even if you’ve practiced your speech until it’s practically etched into your brain, you always want to keep notes or an outline with you. No matter how much you practice, you may find yourself freezing up in the moment. If you don’t have notes handy, you might flounder. On the other hand though, you also shouldn’t keep your whole speech with you.

If you do, you might find yourself relying on it like a security blanket. You may end up just reading the whole speech straight from the paper without engaging with your audience at all. Both ends of the spectrum are too extreme, so it’s best to find a happy medium. Some people just keep their outline with them.

Other people write out the first sentence of each paragraph to jog their memory and help them orient themselves. As you practice, you’ll find the method that works best for you.

Step 8: Do a Test Run in Front of an Audience

Practicing for a speech on your own is important. But once you feel more comfortable with the speech, you should practice in front of someone. Ideally, you’ll rehearse it in front of people several times until you can keep your nervous responses in check.

This means delivering the speech without your heart racing and your speech speeding up to match.   

Step 9: Weed Out Any Trouble Spots

Every time you practice your speech, you should be refining it until you can’t improve it any further. One of the big things you should be looking out for is your usage of filler words or speech disfluencies.

Speech disfluencies encompass those little noises like “um”, “er”, and “uh” that we tend to use when we aren’t confident. These can make people tune out because your discomfort makes them feel awkward in turn.

As you practice, pay attention to places where you’re inserting those disfluencies. Keep practicing them until you become comfortable enough to leave them out. Or, rewrite those sections so they come to you more naturally.  

Step 10: End On a Good Note

Above all else, remember that this speech is intended to be a positive thing. An appreciation speech should make someone’s day .

Remember to end the speech by reaffirming specifically why you are showing appreciation.

I firmly believe that anyone who sets out to achieve something still does better than those who do not even strive.

I was not quite gifted with a high IQ or a very sharp and quick mind. I know at this point you’d seem to doubt whether I am worthy of this achievement or not but I have ample reason for why I stand here today even without the brightest of minds. I stand here because I worked hard, I gave in my all to my goal. I made many sacrifices on the way, some that made me question my goal entirely. Some thought I was crazy, chasing behind something only for the sheer joy of attaining it. People told me it won’t feel good the day I actually make it happen. People warned me that the chase was way more fun than the reward. As I receive this prestigious award, I agree with them today. I do not feel good, in fact, I do not feel anything except tremendous joy and gratitude for everything and everyone who helped me reach this milestone.

I would like to thank my mother for her unconditional support, my friends Ram, Varun, among others for their regular reassurances. And I would want to thank my wife the most, who was there with me when I was still a dreamer and is here with me to live that dream. In the end, I would like to thank god almighty himself. He gave me difficult tests but he also gave me the courage to overcome them, he gave me doubts and red flags but also gave me the willpower to emerge from them. Graduation is an important event, and often, people like to use the occasion to thank everyone that supported them through school or a program. However, writing a good graduation speech can be challenging. Things You Should Know

• Start with a 2-5 sentence introduction that engages your audience. Try using a rhetorical question, quote, or short anecdote.
• Thank your friends, family, and teachers in depth in the body of your speech. This should be about 2-3 paragraphs.
• Conclude your speech with 1-2 sentences that summarize everything you've said so far.

Brainstorming Your Ideas

• If you are talking to close friends or family, address the people you are thanking by name.
• Write down every person or group of people that comes to mind. You can edit this later on.

• Be honest about why you are thanking someone.
• The reasoning here can be very simple. For example, “My history teacher always made me laugh,” or “My mom woke me up every morning” are good reasons to thank someone.
• The more heartfelt the gratitude, the better. Take time to reflect on your feelings.

• Remember, there is no wrong way to brainstorm. Just keep writing.
• Continue to freewrite until you cannot think of anything else to say, and for at least 30 minutes.
• Now, you’ve brainstormed about your speech, so it is time to write it.

Writing the Thank You Speech

• “What are you thankful for?” This is beginning with a rhetorical question, since the audience will not answer.
• As Willie Nelson once said, "When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around." This is beginning with a quote.
• “It was the first day of high school, and I stood outside the door of my first class, scared to go in. On the last day of high school, I left that same door feeling thankful.” This is beginning with an anecdote.

• For example, you can say, “I would like to thank my friends and family for always inspiring me when I felt hopeless.”
• Another example is, “I want to thank Professor Z for helping me choose a major.”
• The body of the speech comes immediately after the introduction.
• Avoid insulting or offending those you are speaking to. Do not vent about problems or criticize others during this speech.

• Another simple example is, “Once again, I am so lucky to have such great friends and family. Thank you.”
• You can end on thanking someone by saying, “The last person I want to thank is my grandma. She was always there for me. Good night.”
• An anecdote is a great way to end a speech, as well as a wonderful quote from the Romans, Victorians, or a world-famous leader. You could also end the speech with your own words of hope and well wishes.
• Keep the audience engaged by inviting them to do something physical. You might say "Can we all stand up?" or "I want you to shout 'I love this life!'"

No man is an island, and when we're successful, it's usually because others have helped us. An appreciation speech is given to express gratitude to those people. Also known as a"words of gratitude" speech, it's usually not impromptu, and you'll have time to prepare in advance. Writing your appreciation speech begins with an outline listing the key points you'd like to make, then fleshing out the body of the speech. Keep it light and lively, and sprinkle in a touch of humor and a few anecdotes or quotes. A well-prepared thank you speech for a personal or professional event is a memorable one.

Who's Your Audience?

Consider your audience when writing your appreciation speech. Is this a business launch, a retirement celebration, an awards ceremony or a professional networking event? Keep the tone of the event in mind as you plan your speech. Some questions to help you write your thank you speech for either a personal or professional event are:

• How long have you known the person or persons you're thanking?
• Why are they worthy of gratitude?
• What story can you tell to describe your interactions with them?
• What song lyric or quote reminds you of them?
• How long have they worked for the company?
• What did she do at the company?
• What examples of his impact do you have?
• What lasting impact will she have once they no longer work there?
• What did he teach by example?

Write an Outline

The best way to begin to write any type of speech is to start with an outline. An outline provides a mental roadmap and serves to keep you on track as you write the speech, and later as you deliver it. A good rule of thumb to help prepare the outline of your speech is to break it into parts as follows:

• Introduction : Tell the audience what you are going to say. Give an overview of the key points in the speech. Tell them why the person is being recognized in an appreciation speech.
• Body: Tell the audience why they should appreciate or recognize the topic or person.
• Conclusion: Reiterate the main points in your speech.

Craft a Compelling Introduction

Begin your introduction with an explanation of how valuable this person is to your business. Gloss over the high points of the past year or of his career, leaving the audience with the knowledge that he's truly someone deserving of your appreciation.

I stand here today in front of you as the best student of the year 2021. When I was in my second year at this college I got to know I had a shot for this title, so I worked for it, I strived for it and surely I sacrificed many things for the last 4 years for it and finally tonight I got it.

I am happy I got the title. I felt euphoric when my name was announced and my heart was racing when I walked on this stage and received my award. I felt I have achieved everything in my life but that feeling lasted just for 20 seconds. 

Yes for the last 20 seconds I felt I was on top of the moon, I felt all my problems were solved and I felt very happy. But then came that heart-wrenching 21st second and during that second I questioned myself “That’s it? ”and there were a series of questions in my head like why am I not feeling any different? why am I not feeling the same when I collected the award?. I felt the same usual thing that I feel every day and that my friends are when I started questioning things. I thought everything from the beginning and here is my thought process.

Working hard is very important and I believe it’s the only thing that makes work gets done. But it should not be done only to reach your goals. It should not be done by sacrificing relationships you have built around you. 

Yes, I am very happy that I got the award and I am grateful for it but I have also sacrificed important relationships and the moments of my life for the last 4 years. Now my friends I want you to reflect on yourself and think of the goal you want to accomplish in your life. It can be anything from becoming a millionaire to even getting into a reputed institute to complete your further education. The point is whatever you want to accomplish in your life, do not do it by sacrificing the important relationships with people in your life. 

I self-reflect on the last 4 years of my college life and all I can see is me working hard for my goals and that’s it. I didn’t make memories with my friends nor spend some time with my family and I regret it. But I am glad that I learned this lesson now in my life imagine if learned this lesson when I was 56 years old or on my deathbed. I am sure there might be many “I wish I had ” in my mind. So I am glad I learned this lesson now. That all want to say to all of you that never regret anything in the 21st second like I am did, always spend your time with your family members and try to create as many happy memories with your friends. 

Last but not least I want to say that no amount of money, titles, or accomplishment will help give warmth to our hearts at the end of our lives. The relationships you built and the impact you make in everyone’s life is what will help you at the end of your life.

Good morning to one and all present here today. On behalf of all the senior graduating class, I would like to thank everyone who made our stay at this college good. The board of directors of the college, the teaching staff, the maintenance staff we thank you all for always giving your best and we thank you all for always being there for every student. To the parents, we thank you for all the sacrifices you have made for us so that we could complete our studies. 

I stand before you the best student of the year 2021 and I must say I am very proud of myself. I got to know  I had a shot for the title when I was in my second year. From that moment I worked hard, I strived and sacrificed for getting that title and today I got it and I feel happy. From the moment my name was announced to the moment I collected the title, my heart was racing and I felt euphoric. I felt I have accomplished everything on this planet and I felt great. But that feeling lasted for just 20 seconds and on the 21st second, I felt normal. Why ? was the question in my mind. Why am I not feeling different? This was the problem for me and that is when I started reflecting on my last four years at this college. 

Working hard is important and it surely gets the work done but it should not be done by sacrificing the important relationships in our life. It surely should not be done for the sole purpose of reaching your goal. The point I wanna make here is that whatever your goal is whether making money, playing any sports at the national level anything does not do it for the sole purpose of reaching your goal. While you are working on your goals spend time with your family and friends because when we are at the end of our life, it’s not the money, medals, or accomplishments that would give us warmth in our hearts. The relationships you built and the impact you make in everyone’s life is what will help you at the end of your life. Thank you and God bless you all.

I don't feel good; in fact, I don't feel anything except immense joy and gratitude to everyone and everything who helped me reach this milestone. I'd like to thank my parents for their unwavering support, as well as my friends for their regular reassurances. And I'd like to thank everyone who was there for me when I was still a dreamer and is still here to help me live that dream. Finally, I'd like to thank God Almighty himself. He put me through difficult tests, but he also gave me the courage to overcome them; he gave me doubts, but he also gave me the willpower to overcome them. I am grateful to God for his guidance and love. I want to thank and express my gratitude to everyone who has been a part of my life and this journey.
