Digital India is a massive campaign that the Government of India launched in the year 2015. There are three components at the core of the “Digital India” campaign. 

Creation of Digital Infrastructure  

To be able to deploy various digital services across the country, it is necessary to create a strong digital infrastructure, especially in rural areas of the country. The interior regions of the country either have very little or mostly do not have any electronic network. This is the reason behind establishing a digital network across the country. Bharat Broadband Network Limited, the governmental body that is responsible for the execution of the National Optical Fiber Network project is responsible for the Digital India project as well. Bharat Net aims to connect 2,50,500 gram panchayats across the country to a high-speed internet network via an optical fiber network. 4,00,000 internet points will be established all across the country as part of the program, from which anybody will be able to access the internet. 

Delivery of Digital Service  

A major component of the Digital India campaign is to deliver government services and other essential services digitally. It is easier to change the way of delivering services from physical to digital. Many services of the Government of India were digitized under the Digital India Campaign. 

All ministries would be linked under this scheme, and all departments will be able to reach out to the people with fundamental services like health care, banking, education, scholarships, gas cylinders, water and electricity bills, and judicial services. The daily monetary transactions of people were also converted into digital mode. To ensure transparency in the transactions and curb corruption all the money transactions are being made online, and are supported by one-time passwords. 

Digital Literacy  

For full participation of the people of India, the competency that they need to have is called Digital Literacy. The basic behavior, knowledge, and skills required to effectively use digital devices are mandatory. Desktop PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones are the digital devices used for the purpose of communicating, expressing, collaborating, and advocating. The mission of Digital Literacy will be covering over six crore rural households. 

With the Digital India Programme, the Government of India is hoping to achieve all-around growth on multiple fronts collectively. The objective of the Government is to target the nine ‘Pillars of Digital India’ that are identified as follows.

There has been a vast growth in the usage of the internet and technology in the past few years. The Panchkula district in Haryana was awarded the best and top performing district under the Digital India campaign on the 28 th of December 2015. 

So far, services such as digital lockers, my government website, e-education, scholarships, pensions, ration cards, PAN cards, Aadhar cards, e-insurance, and e-health have been made accessible under this plan. The goal has been established for the Digital India project to be completely implemented by 2019. 

Technology giants from all over the world paid attention to the Digital India campaign and are readily and happily supporting the initiative. Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG)  - This mobile platform can be used on any device. This software is available in a variety of Indian languages. This software allows users to access a variety of services. Education portals, a digital locker, Aadhar, tax, and train ticket purchasing are among the services available. 

Agri market App  - It was created to make agricultural prices known to farmers and discourage them from selling too soon. 

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao - Ensuring the welfare and nurturing of a girl child and also making sure that every girl child attends school. 

Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) - It makes payments quickly, easily, and simply through the Unified Payment Interface (UPI). It also allows the bank to accept instant payments and money collections using mobile phone numbers. 

Crop Insurance Mobile App - Used to calculate crop insurance premiums depending on numerous characteristics such as area or loan amount, if a loan is taken out. 

E-Hospital - It's an HMIS (Hospital Management Information System) for hospitals' internal workflows and operations. 

E-Pathshala - The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) created it to make all educational resources, such as books and videos, available online. 

EPFO Web Portal and Mobile App - Allow workers to check the amount of their provident fund using an e-passbook, which is a virtual equivalent of a real passbook. 

Start-up India Portal and Mobile App - It is a government of India program to encourage entrepreneurs to develop businesses (start-ups) in the country to expand sustainably. 

Benefits of Digital India

It makes health care and literacy more accessible since one may use a hospital service to receive online registration, a doctor's appointment, payment of the charge, a diagnostic test, and a blood test, among other things. 

It allows consumers to submit their paperwork and certifications online from anywhere, reducing the amount of physical work required. 

Citizens can digitally sign their records online to sign the framework. 

It benefits the beneficiaries of the National Scholarship Portal by allowing them to submit applications, have them verified, and then be paid or disbursed. 

BSNL's next-generation network will replace 30-year-old telephone exchanges for improved administration of online services on mobile devices like voice, data, multimedia, etc. 

Flexible electronics will be promoted with the support of the National Center for Flexible Electronics. 

As all transactions are completed through the digital method, it also aids in the reduction of black marketing.

A goal has been established for 1.7 lakh persons to be employed as part of this initiative.

A Digital Revolution in India

India has a population of 1.3 billion people , including 400 million Internet users. This means that currently over 70% of citizens are not using the Internet. Contributing factors are a lack of infrastructure and a need to improve Internet literacy. 

To address these challenges, on 1 July 2015, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an ambitious and forward-thinking program called Digital India – with specific targets to be reached by 2019.  Digital India seeks to expand India’s digital infrastructure so that every citizen has access to the Internet and knows how to use it. A major part of the program is to connect rural areas to the Internet. Three core goals are: creating infrastructure, delivering services digitally and increasing digital literacy. 

The program has a far-reaching agenda – it includes broadband access, universal phone access, e-Government reform, and e-Kranti (electronic revolution) – meaning the electronic delivery of services such as banking, health and education. Other projects target electronics manufacturing, information technology and jobs.  A variety of related initiatives have sprung up – involving engineering and technical standards for the government, product development efforts around services, research and innovation, and a Centre of Excellence on the Internet of Things. 

What are the specific targets? Just on the connection front, Digital India aims to bring broadband to 250,000 villages, create 400,000 public Internet access points, and deploy Wi-Fi to 250,000 schools and all universities. Equally ambitious in the employment arena, the program would directly create 17 million jobs and indirectly another 8.5 million. 

To devise solutions, Digital India is relying on the multistakeholder model, involving government, industry, civil society and end users. At the ICANN57 Opening Ceremony in Hyderabad earlier this week, Ravi Shankar Prasad – Minister of Law & Justice, & Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India – spoke of the importance of community engagement. “Our idea is to partner with the global community to make the Internet more accessible without discrimination. And, therefore, we're involved in a big program of digital literacy,” said Prasad. “We are going to make 600 million digitally literate in the coming three years.”

Digital Revolution

Throughout the 20th century, the pace of technological advancement has increased dramatically. The digital revolution, now upon us, is expected to take giant strides in the 21st century. Companies are manufacturing audio and video sets communications and Information Technology (IT) products for the consumer and professional markets. Companies have developed a wide product portfolio which includes goods that have become integral part of modern lifestyles—from magnetic tape and tape recorder to transistor radio to all-transistor television, colour video cassette-recorder, computer, etc. The compact di minidisc systems have radically changed the music industry more recently, companies have introduced DVD-video. Companies  have not only been a market leader in consumer electronics, but has also become a major player in the world of professional broadcasting, telecommunications, PC technology and now the Internet.

 These four market segments are rapidly merging as digital technology which increases the potential in each area. For example, television has, to date, been largely limited in terms of content and application, but it is essentially just a box of electronics. Many of the latest televisions have the capability of Internet access and many experts believe that the future will see the integration of the personal computer and television. Companies aim to create a network environment within the home from which consumers can access specific video or audio selections whenever they want.  

In order to harness the potential of digital technology for the purpose of providing enjoyment to people around the world, firms have developed a concept called Digital Dream Kids. They want to identify the dreams of the young, digitally literate generation of consumers and translate them into unique, fun products and exciting applications, supplying products that fulfil the dreams of their customers. To achieve this target, it requires a seamless merging of content, hardware and technology. This concept has become central to the corporate strategy for various companies.

The key to success in this challenging and highly competitive technological marketplace is effective innovation and the continual development of new products. All new product development has to go through a number of stages. New products have to be conceived through a process of imagination, creativity and inspiration. These new ideas must then be screened and evaluated from both production and financial perspectives. Successful ideas will be developed in the laboratory and undergo thorough test marketing before they can be launched.

Market research is crucially important throughout these processes, both of the potential market and of the product, but often with such innovative products as the play station and walkman, companies are anticipating a desire that consumers have yet to appreciate. They have literally created the market for these products. Market research is vital in keeping in touch with consumers’ dreams.

Not only do the designers and engineers have to be of the highest calibre in their own fields, but they must also be able to empathise with the Digital Dream Kids. All research and development is carried out using ‘an earth-conscious approach’, designed to use fewer natural resources in production and operation, and in line with the overall corporate mission statement. Research is both short term, looking at specific products, and with a long term view, investigating, for example, raw materials or bionic processes.

Digital television uses the same language as computers and compact discs, breaking the information to binary bits, a series of ones and zeros, which are then transmitted to the television. Unlike with analogue, these signals cannot be degraded, resulting in far superior quality of pictures and sound. Reception by aerial, satellite or cable has meant that consumers can now receive up to 164 different channels as well as home shopping, banking and information services. Internet access and cheaper phone calls are also available options.

Companies helped to pioneer the development of digital formats for audio-visual products, starting with the compact disc. They are now pushing forward with their mission to consolidate the audio-visual and IT industries. The product mix has placed the companies in a unique position making them able to do this. All future product development has to conform to Video Audio Integrated Operation (VAIO) strategy, with the aim that all products brought to the market place will not only be compatible with each other, but that, in time, can become one. Connectivity brings much greater flexibility than the traditional stand-alone products.

 For example, the new digital camcorders have an interface to allow the downloading of images directly onto the PC for editing. Companies launched the WEGA Digital flat Widescreen television that includes an array of extra programming to enhance the potential of the set and state-of-the-art digital picture and sound quality. The digital television is being developed so that in the future it will meet all the consumer needs, a one-stop entertainment shop.

The pace of technological progress has forced fundamental changes on the corporate structure, with their adopting a horizontal, rather than vertical organisational structure for the first time in its fifty-year history. This was designed to speed up decision making and market responsiveness.

 In the digital realm, where change is no longer a punctuating event so much as the steady-state principle of things, we have learned to turn a wondering, or bemused, eye upon whatever is the latest—and then, shrugging or not, to adapt. E-mail is already a part of our central societal nervous system; virtual reality and smart environments—once part of the fantasy of Jetson futurism have become more likely every day.

The impact of technological change on a firm is usually considered an external influence. For example, by taking such an essential role, driving the markets forward through its innovative research and development, Sony has been able to become a proactive force, rather than having to react to changes.

This book is a short history of the ways in which the digital revolution has been narrated, of the rhetoric, the narratives, and the overt or implied debates that have accompanied it and continue to accompany it today. This volume aims to tell the story of an idea, defined as one of the most powerful ideologies of recent decades: that digitalization constitutes a revolution, a break with the past, a radical change for the human beings who are living through it. The book aims to investigate the origins of this idea, how it evolved, its quasi-religious dimension, which other past revolutions consciously or unconsciously inspired it, which great stories it has conveyed over time, which of its key elements have changed and which ones have persisted and have been repeated in different historical periods. All these discussions, large and small, have settled and been condensed into a series of media, advertising, corporate, political, and technical sources, and so in the book, readers can also find new, previously unpublished historical sources. The main aim of the book is to deconstruct what looks like a “natural” and incontestable idea and to help rethink digital societies today.
