Definition of research in data analysis: According to LeCompte and Schensul, research data analysis is a process used by researchers to reduce data to a story and interpret it to derive insights. The data analysis process helps reduce a large chunk of data into smaller fragments, which makes sense. 

Three essential things occur during the data analysis process — the first is data organization . Summarization and categorization together contribute to becoming the second known method used for data reduction. It helps find patterns and themes in the data for easy identification and linking. The third and last way is data analysis – researchers do it in both top-down and bottom-up fashion.

On the other hand, Marshall and Rossman describe data analysis as a messy, ambiguous, and time-consuming but creative and fascinating process through which a mass of collected data is brought to order, structure and meaning.

We can say that “the data analysis and data interpretation is a process representing the application of deductive and inductive logic to the research and data analysis.”

Researchers rely heavily on data as they have a story to tell or research problems to solve. It starts with a question, and data is nothing but an answer to that question. But, what if there is no question to ask? Well! Every kind of data has a rare quality of describing things after assigning a specific value to it. For analysis, you need to organize these values, processed and presented in a given context, to make it useful. Data can be in different forms; here are the primary data types.

  • Qualitative data: When the data presented has words and descriptions, then we call it qualitative data . Although you can observe this data, it is subjective and harder to analyze data in research, especially for comparison. Example: Quality data represents everything describing taste, experience, texture, or an opinion that is considered quality data. This type of data is usually collected through focus groups, personal qualitative interviews , qualitative observation or using open-ended questions in surveys.
  • Quantitative data: Any data expressed in numbers of numerical figures are called quantitative data . This type of data can be distinguished into categories, grouped, measured, calculated, or ranked. Example: questions such as age, rank, cost, length, weight, scores, etc. everything comes under this type of data. You can present such data in graphical format, charts, or apply statistical analysis methods to this data.   • Categorical data: It is data presented in groups. However, an item included in the categorical data cannot belong to more than one group. Example: A person responding to a survey by telling his living style, marital status, smoking habit, or drinking habit comes under the categorical data. Data analysis in qualitative research

Data analysis and qualitative data research work a little differently from the numerical data as the quality data is made up of words, descriptions, images, objects, and sometimes symbols. Getting insight from such complicated information is a complicated process. Hence it is typically used for exploratory research and data analysis .

Although there are several ways to find patterns in the textual information, a word-based method is the most relied and widely used global technique for research and data analysis. Notably, the data analysis process in qualitative research is manual. Here the researchers usually read the available data and find repetitive or commonly used words. 

For example, while studying data collected from African countries to understand the most pressing issues people face, researchers might find  “food”  and  “hunger” are the most commonly used words and will highlight them for further analysis.

The keyword context is another widely used word-based technique. In this method, the researcher tries to understand the concept by analyzing the context in which the participants use a particular keyword.  

For example , researchers conducting research and data analysis for studying the concept of ‘diabetes’ amongst respondents might analyze the context of when and how the respondent has used or referred to the word ‘diabetes.’

The scrutiny-based technique is also one of the highly recommended  text analysis  methods used to identify a quality data pattern. Compare and contrast is the widely used method under this technique to differentiate how a specific text is similar or different from each other. 

For example: To find out the “importance of resident doctor in a company,” the collected data is divided into people who think it is necessary to hire a resident doctor and those who think it is unnecessary. Compare and contrast is the best method that can be used to analyze the polls having single-answer questions types .

Metaphors can be used to reduce the data pile and find patterns in it so that it becomes easier to connect data with theory.

Variable Partitioning is another technique used to split variables so that researchers can find more coherent descriptions and explanations from the enormous data.

There are several techniques to analyze the data in qualitative research, but here are some commonly used methods,

  • Content Analysis:  It is widely accepted and the most frequently employed technique for data analysis in research methodology. It can be used to analyze the documented information from text, images, and sometimes from the physical items. It depends on the research questions to predict when and where to use this method.
  • Narrative Analysis: This method is used to analyze content gathered from various sources such as personal interviews, field observation, and  surveys . The majority of times, stories, or opinions shared by people are focused on finding answers to the research questions.
  • Discourse Analysis:  Similar to narrative analysis, discourse analysis is used to analyze the interactions with people. Nevertheless, this particular method considers the social context under which or within which the communication between the researcher and respondent takes place. In addition to that, discourse analysis also focuses on the lifestyle and day-to-day environment while deriving any conclusion.
  • Grounded Theory:  When you want to explain why a particular phenomenon happened, then using grounded theory for analyzing quality data is the best resort. Grounded theory is applied to study data about the host of similar cases occurring in different settings. When researchers are using this method, they might alter explanations or produce new ones until they arrive at some conclusion.

Data analysis in quantitative research

The first stage in research and data analysis is to make it for the analysis so that the nominal data can be converted into something meaningful. Data preparation consists of the below phases.

Phase I: Data Validation

Data validation is done to understand if the collected data sample is per the pre-set standards, or it is a biased data sample again divided into four different stages

  • Fraud: To ensure an actual human being records each response to the survey or the questionnaire
  • Screening: To make sure each participant or respondent is selected or chosen in compliance with the research criteria
  • Procedure: To ensure ethical standards were maintained while collecting the data sample

Phase II: Data Editing

More often, an extensive research data sample comes loaded with errors. Respondents sometimes fill in some fields incorrectly or sometimes skip them accidentally. Data editing is a process wherein the researchers have to confirm that the provided data is free of such errors. They need to conduct necessary checks and outlier checks to edit the raw edit and make it ready for analysis.

Phase III: Data Coding

Out of all three, this is the most critical phase of data preparation associated with grouping and assigning values to the survey responses . If a survey is completed with a 1000 sample size, the researcher will create an age bracket to distinguish the respondents based on their age. Thus, it becomes easier to analyze small data buckets rather than deal with the massive data pile.

After the data is prepared for analysis, researchers are open to using different research and data analysis methods to derive meaningful insights. For sure, statistical analysis plans are the most favored to analyze numerical data. In statistical analysis, distinguishing between categorical data and numerical data is essential, as categorical data involves distinct categories or labels, while numerical data consists of measurable quantities. The method is again classified into two groups. First, ‘Descriptive Statistics’ used to describe data. Second, ‘Inferential statistics’ that helps in comparing the data .

Descriptive statistics

This method is used to describe the basic features of versatile types of data in research. It presents the data in such a meaningful way that pattern in the data starts making sense. Nevertheless, the descriptive analysis does not go beyond making conclusions. The conclusions are again based on the hypothesis researchers have formulated so far. Here are a few major types of descriptive analysis methods.

Measures of Frequency

  • Count, Percent, Frequency
  • It is used to denote home often a particular event occurs.
  • Researchers use it when they want to showcase how often a response is given.

Measures of Central Tendency

  • Mean, Median, Mode
  • The method is widely used to demonstrate distribution by various points.
  • Researchers use this method when they want to showcase the most commonly or averagely indicated response.

Measures of Dispersion or Variation

  • Range, Variance, Standard deviation
  • Here the field equals high/low points.
  • Variance standard deviation = difference between the observed score and mean
  • It is used to identify the spread of scores by stating intervals.
  • Researchers use this method to showcase data spread out. It helps them identify the depth until which the data is spread out that it directly affects the mean.

Measures of Position

  • Percentile ranks, Quartile ranks
  • It relies on standardized scores helping researchers to identify the relationship between different scores.
  • It is often used when researchers want to compare scores with the average count.

For quantitative research use of descriptive analysis often give absolute numbers, but the in-depth analysis is never sufficient to demonstrate the rationale behind those numbers. Nevertheless, it is necessary to think of the best method for research and data analysis suiting your survey questionnaire and what story researchers want to tell. For example, the mean is the best way to demonstrate the students’ average scores in schools. It is better to rely on the descriptive statistics when the researchers intend to keep the research or outcome limited to the provided  sample  without generalizing it. For example, when you want to compare average voting done in two different cities, differential statistics are enough.

Descriptive analysis is also called a ‘univariate analysis’ since it is commonly used to analyze a single variable.

Inferential statistics

Inferential statistics are used to make predictions about a larger population after research and data analysis of the representing population’s collected sample. For example, you can ask some odd 100 audiences at a movie theater if they like the movie they are watching. Researchers then use inferential statistics on the collected  sample  to reason that about 80-90% of people like the movie. 

Here are two significant areas of inferential statistics.

  • Estimating parameters: It takes statistics from the sample research data and demonstrates something about the population parameter.
  • Hypothesis test: I t’s about sampling research data to answer the survey research questions. For example, researchers might be interested to understand if the new shade of lipstick recently launched is good or not, or if the multivitamin capsules help children to perform better at games.

These are sophisticated analysis methods used to showcase the relationship between different variables instead of describing a single variable. It is often used when researchers want something beyond absolute numbers to understand the relationship between variables.

Here are some of the commonly used methods for data analysis in research.

  • Correlation: When researchers are not conducting experimental research or quasi-experimental research wherein the researchers are interested to understand the relationship between two or more variables, they opt for correlational research methods.
  • Cross-tabulation: Also called contingency tables,  cross-tabulation  is used to analyze the relationship between multiple variables.  Suppose provided data has age and gender categories presented in rows and columns. A two-dimensional cross-tabulation helps for seamless data analysis and research by showing the number of males and females in each age category.
  • Regression analysis: For understanding the strong relationship between two variables, researchers do not look beyond the primary and commonly used regression analysis method, which is also a type of predictive analysis used. In this method, you have an essential factor called the dependent variable. You also have multiple independent variables in regression analysis. You undertake efforts to find out the impact of independent variables on the dependent variable. The values of both independent and dependent variables are assumed as being ascertained in an error-free random manner.
  • Frequency tables: The statistical procedure is used for testing the degree to which two or more vary or differ in an experiment. A considerable degree of variation means research findings were significant. In many contexts, ANOVA testing and variance analysis are similar.

  • Usually, research and data analytics projects differ by scientific discipline; therefore, getting statistical advice at the beginning of analysis helps design a survey questionnaire, select data collection methods , and choose samples.

data analysis , the process of systematically collecting, cleaning, transforming, describing, modeling, and interpreting data , generally employing statistical techniques. Data analysis is an important part of both scientific research and business, where demand has grown in recent years for data-driven decision making . Data analysis techniques are used to gain useful insights from datasets, which can then be used to make operational decisions or guide future research . With the rise of “Big Data,” the storage of vast quantities of data in large databases and data warehouses, there is increasing need to apply data analysis techniques to generate insights about volumes of data too large to be manipulated by instruments of low information-processing capacity.

Datasets are collections of information. Generally, data and datasets are themselves collected to help answer questions, make decisions, or otherwise inform reasoning. The rise of information technology has led to the generation of vast amounts of data of many kinds, such as text, pictures, videos, personal information, account data, and metadata, the last of which provide information about other data. It is common for apps and websites to collect data about how their products are used or about the people using their platforms. Consequently, there is vastly more data being collected today than at any other time in human history. A single business may track billions of interactions with millions of consumers at hundreds of locations with thousands of employees and any number of products. Analyzing that volume of data is generally only possible using specialized computational and statistical techniques.

The desire for businesses to make the best use of their data has led to the development of the field of business intelligence , which covers a variety of tools and techniques that allow businesses to perform data analysis on the information they collect.

For data to be analyzed, it must first be collected and stored. Raw data must be processed into a format that can be used for analysis and be cleaned so that errors and inconsistencies are minimized. Data can be stored in many ways, but one of the most useful is in a database . A database is a collection of interrelated data organized so that certain records (collections of data related to a single entity) can be retrieved on the basis of various criteria . The most familiar kind of database is the relational database , which stores data in tables with rows that represent records (tuples) and columns that represent fields (attributes). A query is a command that retrieves a subset of the information in the database according to certain criteria. A query may retrieve only records that meet certain criteria, or it may join fields from records across multiple tables by use of a common field.

Frequently, data from many sources is collected into large archives of data called data warehouses. The process of moving data from its original sources (such as databases) to a centralized location (generally a data warehouse) is called ETL (which stands for extract , transform , and load ).

  • The extraction step occurs when you identify and copy or export the desired data from its source, such as by running a database query to retrieve the desired records.
  • The transformation step is the process of cleaning the data so that they fit the analytical need for the data and the schema of the data warehouse. This may involve changing formats for certain fields, removing duplicate records, or renaming fields, among other processes.
  • Finally, the clean data are loaded into the data warehouse, where they may join vast amounts of historical data and data from other sources.

After data are effectively collected and cleaned, they can be analyzed with a variety of techniques. Analysis often begins with descriptive and exploratory data analysis. Descriptive data analysis uses statistics to organize and summarize data, making it easier to understand the broad qualities of the dataset. Exploratory data analysis looks for insights into the data that may arise from descriptions of distribution, central tendency, or variability for a single data field. Further relationships between data may become apparent by examining two fields together. Visualizations may be employed during analysis, such as histograms (graphs in which the length of a bar indicates a quantity) or stem-and-leaf plots (which divide data into buckets, or “stems,” with individual data points serving as “leaves” on the stem).

Data analysis frequently goes beyond descriptive analysis to predictive analysis, making predictions about the future using predictive modeling techniques. Predictive modeling uses machine learning , regression analysis methods (which mathematically calculate the relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable), and classification techniques to identify trends and relationships among variables. Predictive analysis may involve data mining , which is the process of discovering interesting or useful patterns in large volumes of information. Data mining often involves cluster analysis , which tries to find natural groupings within data, and anomaly detection , which detects instances in data that are unusual and stand out from other patterns. It may also look for rules within datasets, strong relationships among variables in the data.

What is Data Analysis?

According to the federal government, data analysis is "the process of systematically applying statistical and/or logical techniques to describe and illustrate, condense and recap, and evaluate data" ( Responsible Conduct in Data Management ). Important components of data analysis include searching for patterns, remaining unbiased in drawing inference from data, practicing responsible  data management , and maintaining "honest and accurate analysis" ( Responsible Conduct in Data Management ). 

In order to understand data analysis further, it can be helpful to take a step back and understand the question "What is data?". Many of us associate data with spreadsheets of numbers and values, however, data can encompass much more than that. According to the federal government, data is "The recorded factual material commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to validate research findings" ( OMB Circular 110 ). This broad definition can include information in many formats. 

Some examples of types of data are as follows:

  • Photographs 
  • Hand-written notes from field observation
  • Machine learning training data sets
  • Ethnographic interview transcripts
  • Sheet music
  • Scripts for plays and musicals 
  • Observations from laboratory experiments ( CMU Data 101 )

Thus, data analysis includes the processing and manipulation of these data sources in order to gain additional insight from data, answer a research question, or confirm a research hypothesis.

Why Analyze Data?

Through data analysis, a researcher can gain additional insight from data and draw conclusions to address the research question or hypothesis. Use of data analysis tools helps researchers understand and interpret data. 

What are the Types of Data Analysis?

Data analysis can be quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods. 

Quantitative research typically involves numbers and "close-ended questions and responses" ( Creswell & Creswell, 2018 , p. 3). Quantitative research tests variables against objective theories, usually measured and collected on instruments and analyzed using statistical procedures ( Creswell & Creswell, 2018 , p. 4). Quantitative analysis usually uses deductive reasoning. 

Qualitative  research typically involves words and "open-ended questions and responses" ( Creswell & Creswell, 2018 , p. 3). According to Creswell & Creswell, "qualitative research is an approach for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem" ( 2018 , p. 4). Thus, qualitative analysis usually invokes inductive reasoning. 

Mixed methods  research uses methods from both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Mixed methods research works under the "core assumption... that the integration of qualitative and quantitative data yields additional insight beyond the information provided by either the quantitative or qualitative data alone" ( Creswell & Creswell, 2018 , p. 4).

The ask phase is the first step and it starts even before collecting any data. In this phase you need to ask questions in order to define very clearly the business challenge you are trying to solve, the project stakeholders, the project objectives, data you need to collect and how to collect it if it is not yet available.

Once the business problem is clearly defined, the prepare phase starts which include data generation, data collection and retrieval, store the data, and perform data management.

Data quality is an important factor in data analytics, if your data is not of quality then you risk to make a wrong decision, the process phase focus on cleaning and transforming data into a shape that is easier to analyze.

The Analyze phase is where the fun starts, it is where you get to do Data exploration, visualization, and analysis; and finally make sense of the data you have.

You have done a great job finding trends and insights in your data, but if you can’t clearly  communicate these insights in a form that is easy for management to understand then no one will be able to make a decision, the share phase is all about communicating and interpreting results.

The Act phase is where you Put your insights to work to solve the problem.

Note that this process is an iterative process, for example if you have discovered something wrong in your data during the analyze phase, you can go back to the process phase to further clean the data or to the prepare phase to collect more data.

Although there is some arguably technical differences between Data Analysis and Data Analytics, however we are using both terms interchangeably through out this post.

In simple words data analytics describe the complete process of turning data into actionable insights (phases 1 through 6) while data analysis is a subset focusing on collecting, transforming and analyzing data (phases 2 through 4).

1. Descriptive Analysis

The goal of descriptive analysis is to describe or summarize a set of data . Here’s what you need to know:

  • Descriptive analysis is the very first analysis performed in the data analysis process.
  • It generates simple summaries of samples and measurements.
  • It involves common, descriptive statistics like measures of central tendency, variability, frequency and position.

2. Diagnostic Analysis  

Diagnostic analysis seeks to answer the question “Why did this happen?” by taking a more in-depth look at data to uncover subtle patterns. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Diagnostic analysis typically comes after descriptive analysis, taking initial findings and investigating why certain patterns in data happen.

A footwear store wants to review its  website traffic levels over the previous 12 months. Upon compiling and assessing the data, the company’s marketing team finds that June experienced above-average levels of traffic while July and August witnessed slightly lower levels of traffic. 

To find out why this difference occurred, the marketing team takes a deeper look. Team members break down the data to focus on specific categories of footwear. In the month of June, they discovered that pages featuring sandals and other beach-related footwear received a high number of views while these numbers dropped in July and August. 

Marketers may also review other factors like seasonal changes and company sales events to see if other variables could have contributed to this trend.    

3. Exploratory Analysis (EDA)

Exploratory analysis involves examining or  exploring data and finding relationships between variables that were previously unknown. Here’s what you need to know:

  • EDA helps you discover relationships between measures in your data, which are not evidence for the existence of the correlation, as denoted by the phrase, “ Correlation doesn’t imply causation .”
  • It’s useful for discovering new connections and forming hypotheses. It drives design planning and data collection .

Exploratory Analysis Example

Climate change is an increasingly important topic as the global temperature has gradually risen over the years. One example of an exploratory data analysis on climate change involves taking the rise in temperature over the years from 1950 to 2020 and the increase of human activities and industrialization to find relationships from the data. For example, you may increase the number of factories, cars on the road and airplane flights to see how that correlates with the rise in temperature.

Exploratory analysis explores data to find relationships between measures without identifying the cause. It’s most useful when formulating hypotheses. 

4. Inferential Analysis

Inferential analysis involves using a small sample of data to infer information about a larger population of data.

The goal of statistical modeling itself is all about using a small amount of information to extrapolate and generalize information to a larger group. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Inferential analysis involves using estimated data that is representative of a population and gives a measure of uncertainty or  standard deviation to your estimation.
  • The accuracy of inference depends heavily on your sampling scheme. If the sample isn’t representative of the population, the generalization will be inaccurate. This is known as the central limit theorem .

Inferential Analysis Example

A psychological study on the benefits of sleep might have a total of 500 people involved. When they followed up with the candidates, the candidates reported to have better overall attention spans and well-being with seven to nine hours of sleep, while those with less sleep and more sleep than the given range suffered from reduced attention spans and energy. This study drawn from 500 people was just a tiny portion of the 7 billion people in the world, and is thus an inference of the larger population.

Inferential analysis extrapolates and generalizes the information of the larger group with a smaller sample to generate analysis and predictions. 

5. Predictive Analysis

Predictive analysis involves using historical or current data to find patterns and make predictions about the future. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The accuracy of the predictions depends on the input variables.
  • Accuracy also depends on the types of models. A linear model might work well in some cases, and in other cases it might not.
  • Using a variable to predict another one doesn’t denote a causal relationship.

Predictive Analysis Example

The 2020 United States election is a popular topic and many prediction models are built to predict the winning candidate. FiveThirtyEight did this to forecast the 2016 and 2020 elections. Prediction analysis for an election would require input variables such as historical polling data, trends and current polling data in order to return a good prediction. Something as large as an election wouldn’t just be using a linear model, but a complex model with certain tunings to best serve its purpose.

6. Causal Analysis

Causal analysis looks at the cause and effect of relationships between variables and is focused on finding the cause of a correlation. This way, researchers can examine how a change in one variable affects another. Here’s what you need to know:

  • To find the cause, you have to question whether the observed correlations driving your conclusion are valid. Just looking at the surface data won’t help you discover the hidden mechanisms underlying the correlations.
  • Causal analysis is applied in randomized studies focused on identifying causation.
  • Causal analysis is the gold standard in data analysis and scientific studies where the cause of a phenomenon is to be extracted and singled out, like separating wheat from chaff.
  • Good data is hard to find and requires expensive research and studies. These studies are analyzed in aggregate (multiple groups), and the observed relationships are just average effects (mean) of the whole population. This means the results might not apply to everyone.

Causal Analysis Example  

Say you want to test out whether a new drug improves human strength and focus. To do that, you perform randomized control trials for the drug to test its effect. You compare the sample of candidates for your new drug against the candidates receiving a mock control drug through a few tests focused on strength and overall focus and attention. This will allow you to observe how the drug affects the outcome. 

7. Mechanistic Analysis

Mechanistic analysis is used to understand exact changes in variables that lead to other changes in other variables . In some ways, it is a predictive analysis, but it’s modified to tackle studies that require high precision and meticulous methodologies for physical or engineering science. Here’s what you need to know:

  • It’s applied in physical or engineering sciences, situations that require high  precision and little room for error, only noise in data is measurement error.
  • It’s designed to understand a biological or behavioral process, the pathophysiology of a disease or the mechanism of action of an intervention. 

Mechanistic Analysis Example

Say an experiment is done to simulate safe and effective nuclear fusion to power the world. A mechanistic analysis of the study would entail a precise balance of controlling and manipulating variables with highly accurate measures of both variables and the desired outcomes. It’s this intricate and meticulous modus operandi toward these big topics that allows for scientific breakthroughs and advancement of society.

8. Prescriptive Analysis  

Prescriptive analysis compiles insights from other previous data analyses and determines actions that teams or companies can take to prepare for predicted trends. Here’s what you need to know: 

  • Prescriptive analysis may come right after predictive analysis, but it may involve combining many different data analyses. 
  • Companies need advanced technology and plenty of resources to conduct prescriptive analysis. Artificial intelligence systems that process data and adjust automated tasks are an example of the technology required to perform prescriptive analysis.

Data Analysis in Qualitative Research: A Brief Guide to Using Nvivo

Qualitative data is often subjective, rich, and consists of in-depth information normally presented in the form of words. Analysing qualitative data entails reading a large amount of transcripts looking for similarities or differences, and subsequently finding themes and developing categories. Traditionally, researchers ‘cut and paste’ and use coloured pens to categorise data. Recently, the use of software specifically designed for qualitative data management greatly reduces technical sophistication and eases the laborious task, thus making the process relatively easier. A number of computer software packages has been developed to mechanise this ‘coding’ process as well as to search and retrieve data. This paper illustrates the ways in which NVivo can be used in the qualitative data analysis process. The basic features and primary tools of NVivo which assist qualitative researchers in managing and analysing their data are described.

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IN MEDICINE

Qualitative research has seen an increased popularity in the last two decades and is becoming widely accepted across a wide range of medical and health disciplines, including health services research, health technology assessment, nursing, and allied health. 1 There has also been a corresponding rise in the reporting of qualitative research studies in medical and health related journals. 2

The increasing popularity of qualitative methods is a result of failure of quantitative methods to provide insight into in-depth information about the attitudes, beliefs, motives, or behaviours of people, for example in understanding the emotions, perceptions and actions of people who suffer from a medical condition. Qualitative methods explore the perspective and meaning of experiences, seek insight and identify the social structures or processes that explain people”s behavioural meaning. 1 , 3 Most importantly, qualitative research relies on extensive interaction with the people being studied, and often allows researchers to uncover unexpected or unanticipated information, which is not possible in the quantitative methods. In medical research, it is particularly useful, for example, in a health behaviour study whereby health or education policies can be effectively developed if reasons for behaviours are clearly understood when observed or investigated using qualitative methods. 4

ANALYSING QUALITATIVE DATA

Qualitative research yields mainly unstructured text-based data. These textual data could be interview transcripts, observation notes, diary entries, or medical and nursing records. In some cases, qualitative data can also include pictorial display, audio or video clips (e.g. audio and visual recordings of patients, radiology film, and surgery videos), or other multimedia materials. Data analysis is the part of qualitative research that most distinctively differentiates from quantitative research methods. It is not a technical exercise as in quantitative methods, but more of a dynamic, intuitive and creative process of inductive reasoning, thinking and theorising. 5 In contrast to quantitative research, which uses statistical methods, qualitative research focuses on the exploration of values, meanings, beliefs, thoughts, experiences, and feelings characteristic of the phenomenon under investigation. 6

Data analysis in qualitative research is defined as the process of systematically searching and arranging the interview transcripts, observation notes, or other non-textual materials that the researcher accumulates to increase the understanding of the phenomenon. 7 The process of analysing qualitative data predominantly involves coding or categorising the data. Basically it involves making sense of huge amounts of data by reducing the volume of raw information, followed by identifying significant patterns, and finally drawing meaning from data and subsequently building a logical chain of evidence. 8

Coding or categorising the data is the most important stage in the qualitative data analysis process. Coding and data analysis are not synonymous, though coding is a crucial aspect of the qualitative data analysis process. Coding merely involves subdividing the huge amount of raw information or data, and subsequently assigning them into categories. 9 In simple terms, codes are tags or labels for allocating identified themes or topics from the data compiled in the study. Traditionally, coding was done manually, with the use of coloured pens to categorise data, and subsequently cutting and sorting the data. Given the advancement of software technology, electronic methods of coding data are increasingly used by qualitative researchers.

Nevertheless, the computer does not do the analysis for the researchers. Users still have to create the categories, code, decide what to collate, identify the patterns and draw meaning from the data. The use of computer software in qualitative data analysis is limited due to the nature of qualitative research itself in terms of the complexity of its unstructured data, the richness of the data and the way in which findings and theories emerge from the data. 10 The programme merely takes over the marking, cutting, and sorting tasks that qualitative researchers used to do with a pair of scissors, paper and note cards. It helps to maximise efficiency and speed up the process of grouping data according to categories and retrieving coded themes. Ultimately, the researcher still has to synthesise the data and interpret the meanings that were extracted from the data. Therefore, the use of computers in qualitative analysis merely made organisation, reduction and storage of data more efficient and manageable. The qualitative data analysis process is illustrated in Figure 1 .

USING NVIVO IN QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS

NVivo is one of the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis softwares (CAQDAS) developed by QSR International (Melbourne, Australia), the world’s largest qualitative research software developer. This software allows for qualitative inquiry beyond coding, sorting and retrieval of data. It was also designed to integrate coding with qualitative linking, shaping and modelling. The following sections discuss the fundamentals of the NVivo software (version 2.0) and illustrates the primary tools in NVivo which assist qualitative researchers in managing their data.

Key features of NVivo

To work with NVivo, first and foremost, the researcher has to create a Project to hold the data or study information. Once a project is created, the Project pad appears ( Figure 2 ). The project pad of NVivo has two main menus: Document browser and Node browser . In any project in NVivo, the researcher can create and explore documents and nodes, when the data is browsed, linked and coded. Both document and node browsers have an Attribute feature, which helps researchers to refer the characteristics of the data such as age, gender, marital status, ethnicity, etc.

The document browser is the main work space for coding documents ( Figure 3 ). Documents in NVivo can be created inside the NVivo project or imported from MS Word or WordPad in a rich text (.rtf) format into the project. It can also be imported as a plain text file (.txt) from any word processor. Transcripts of interview data and observation notes are examples of documents that can be saved as individual documents in NVivo. In the document browser all the documents can be viewed in a database with short descriptions of each document.

NVivo is also designed to allow the researcher to place a Hyperlink to other files (for example audio, video and image files, web pages, etc.) in the documents to capture conceptual links which are observed during the analysis. The readers can click on it and be taken to another part of the same document, or a separate file. A hyperlink is very much like a footnote.

The second menu is Node explorer ( Figure 4 ), which represents categories throughout the data. The codes are saved within the NVivo database as nodes. Nodes created in NVivo are equivalent to sticky notes that the researcher places on the document to indicate that a particular passage belongs to a certain theme or topic. Unlike sticky notes, the nodes in NVivo are retrievable, easily organised, and give flexibility to the researcher to either create, delete, alter or merge at any stage. There are two most common types of node: tree nodes (codes that are organised in a hierarchical structure) and free nodes (free standing and not associated with a structured framework of themes or concepts). Once the coding process is complete, the researcher can browse the nodes. To view all the quotes on a particular Node, select the particular node on the Node Explorer and click the Browse button ( Figure 5 ).

Coding in NVivo using Coder

Coding is done in the document browser. Coding involves the desegregation of textual data into segments, examining the data similarities and differences, and grouping together conceptually similar data in the respective nodes. 11 The organised list of nodes will appear with a click on the Coder button at the bottom of document browser window.

To code a segment of the text in a project document under a particular node, highlight the particular segment and drag the highlighted text to the desired node in the coder window ( Figure 3 ). The segments that have been coded to a particular node are highlighted in colours and nodes that have attached to a document turns bold. Multiple codes can be assigned to the same segment of text using the same process. Coding Stripes can be activated to view the quotes that are associated with the particular nodes. With the guide of highlighted text and coding stripes, the researcher can return to the data to do further coding or refine the coding.

Coding can be done with pre-constructed coding schemes where the nodes are first created using the Node explorer followed by coding using the coder. Alternatively, a bottom-up approach can be used where the researcher reads the documents and creates nodes when themes arise from the data as he or she codes.

Making and using memos

In analysing qualitative data, pieces of reflective thinking, ideas, theories, and concepts often emerge as the researcher reads through the data. NVivo allows the user the flexibility to record ideas about the research as they emerge in the Memos . Memos can be seen as add-on documents, treated as full status data and coded like any other documents. 12 Memos can be placed in a document or at a node. A memo itself can have memos (e.g. documents or nodes) linked to it, using DocLinks and NodeLinks .

Creating attributes

Attributes are characteristics (e.g. age, marital status, ethnicity, educational level, etc.) that the researcher associates with a document or node. Attributes have different values (for example, the values of the attribute for ethnicity are ‘Malay’, ‘Chinese’ and ‘Indian’). NVivo makes it possible to assign attributes to either document or node. Items in attributes can be added, removed or rearranged to help the researcher in making comparisons. Attributes are also integrated with the searching process; for example, linking the attributes to documents will enable the researcher to conduct searches pertaining to documents with specified characteristics ( Figure 6 ).

Search operation

The three most useful types of searches in NVivo are Single item (text, node, or attribute value), Boolean and Proximity searches. Single item search is particularly important, for example, if researchers want to ensure that every mention of the word ‘cure’ has been coded under the ‘Curability of cervical cancer’ tree node. Every paragraph in which this word is used can be viewed. The results of the search can also be compiled into a single document in the node browser and by viewing the coding stripe. The researcher can check whether each of the resulting passages has been coded under a particular node. This is particularly useful for the researcher to further determine whether conducting further coding is necessary.

Boolean searches combine codes using the logical terms like ‘and’, ‘or’ and ‘not’. Common Boolean searches are ‘or’ (also referred to as ‘combination’ or ‘union’) and ‘and’ (also called ‘intersection’). For example, the researcher may wish to search for a node and an attributed value, such as ‘ever screened for cervical cancer’ and ‘primary educated’. Search results can be displayed in matrix form and it is possible for the researcher to perform quantitative interpretations or simple counts to provide useful summaries of some aspects of the analysis. 13 Proximity searches are used to find places where two items (e.g. text patterns, attribute values, nodes) appear near each other in the text.

Using models to show relationships

Models or visualisations are an essential way to describe and explore relationships in qualitative research. NVivo provides a Modeler designated for visual exploration and explanation of relationships between various nodes and documents. In Model Explorer, the researcher can create, label and connect ideas or concepts. NVivo allows the user to create a model over time and have any number of layers to track the progress of theory development to enable the researcher to examine the stages in the model-building over time ( Figure 7 ). Any documents, nodes or attributes can be placed in a model and clicking on the item will enable the researcher to inspect its properties.

NVivo has clear advantages and can greatly enhance research quality as outlined above. It can ease the laborious task of data analysis which would otherwise be performed manually. The software certainly removes the tremendous amount of manual tasks and allows more time for the researcher to explore trends, identify themes, and make conclusions. Ultimately, analysis of qualitative data is now more systematic and much easier. In addition, NVivo is ideal for researchers working in a team as the software has a Merge tool that enables researchers that work in separate teams to bring their work together into one project.

The NVivo software has been revolutionised and enhanced recently. The newly released NVivo 7 (released March 2006) and NVivo 8 (released March 2008) are even more sophisticated, flexible, and enable more fluid analysis. These new softwares come with a more user-friendly interface that resembles the Microsoft Windows XP applications. Furthermore, they have new data handling capacities such as to enable tables or images embedded in rich text files to be imported and coded as well. In addition, the user can also import and work on rich text files in character based languages such as Chinese or Arabic.

To sum up, qualitative research undoubtedly has been advanced greatly by the development of CAQDAS. The use of qualitative methods in medical and health care research is postulated to grow exponentially in years to come with the further development of CAQDAS.

TERMINOLOGY

Attributes : An attribute is a property of a node, case or document. It is equivalent to a variable in quantitative analysis. An attribute (e.g. ethnicity) may have several values (e.g. Malay, Chinese, Indian, etc.). Any particular node, case or document may be assigned one value for each attribute. Similarities within or differences between groups can be identified using attributes. Attribute Explorer displays a table of all attributes assigned to a document, node or set.

CAQDAS : Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis. The CAQDAS programme assists data management and supports coding processes. The software does not really analyse data, but rather supports the qualitative analysis process. NVivo is one of the CAQDAS programmes; others include NUDIST, ATLAS-ti, AQUAD, ETHNOGRAPH and MAXQDA.

Code : A term that represents an idea, theme, theory, dimension, characteristic, etc., of the data.

Coder : A tool used to code a passage of text in a document under a particular node. The coder can be accessed from the Document or Node Browser .

Coding : The action of identifying a passage of text in a document that exemplifies ideas or concepts and connecting it to a node that represents that idea or concept. Multiple codes can be assigned to the same segment of text in a document.

Coding stripes : Coloured vertical lines displayed at the right-hand pane of a Document ; each is named with title of the node at which the text is coded.

DataLinks : A tool for linking the information in a document or node to the information outside the project, or between project documents. DocLinks , NodeLinks and DataBite Links are all forms of DataLink .

Document : A document in an NVivo project is an editable rich text or plain text file. It may be a transcription of project data or it may be a summary of such data or memos, notes or passages written by the researcher. The text in a document can be coded, may be given values of document attributes and may be linked (via DataLinks ) to other related documents, annotations, or external computer files. The Document Explorer shows the list of all project documents.

Memo : A document containing the researcher”s commentary flagged (linked) on any text in a Document or Node. Any files (text, audio or video, or picture data) can be linked via MemoLink .

Model : NVivo models are made up of symbols, usually representing items in the project, which are joined by lines or arrows, designed to represent the relationship between key elements in a field of study. Models are constructed in the Modeller .

Node : Relevant passages in the project”s documents are coded at nodes. A Node represents a code, theme, or idea about the data in a project. Nodes can be kept as Free Nodes (without organisation) or may be organised hierarchically in Trees (of categories and subcategories). Free nodes are free-standing and are not associated to themes or concepts. Early on in the project, tentative ideas may be stored in the Free Nodes area. Free nodes can be kept in a simple list and can be moved to a logical place in the Tree Node when higher levels of categories are discovered. Nodes can be given values of attributes according to the features of what they represent, and can be grouped in sets. Nodes can be organised (created, edited) in Node Explorer (a window listing all the project nodes and node sets). The Node Browser displays the node”s coding and allow the researcher to change the coding.

Project : Collection of all the files, documents, codes, nodes, attributes, etc. associated with a research project. The Project pad is a window in NVivo when a project is open which gives access to all the main functions of the programme.

Sets : Sets in NVivo hold shortcuts to any nodes or documents, as a way of holding those items together without actually combining them. Sets are used primarily as a way of indicating items that in some way are related conceptually or theoretically. It provides different ways of sorting and managing data.

Tree Node : Nodes organised hierarchically into trees to catalogue categories and subcategories.

Although inferential and descriptive statistics can be classified as types of statistical analysis in research, they are mostly considered analytical methods. Types of research are distinguishable by the differences in the methodology employed in analyzing, assembling, classifying, manipulating, and interpreting data. Predictive Analysis

Predictive research analyzes past and present data to assess trends and predict future events. How to Do Thematic Analysis | Step-by-Step Guide & Examples

Thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data . It is usually applied to a set of texts, such as an interview or transcripts . The researcher closely examines the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly.

There are various approaches to conducting thematic analysis, but the most common form follows a six-step process: familiarization, coding, generating themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and writing up. Following this process can also help you avoid confirmation bias when formulating your analysis.

This process was originally developed for psychology research by Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke . However, thematic analysis is a flexible method that can be adapted to many different kinds of research.

Thematic analysis is a good approach to research where you’re trying to find out something about people’s views, opinions, knowledge, experiences or values from a set of qualitative data – for example, interview transcripts , social media profiles, or survey responses .

Some types of research questions you might use thematic analysis to answer:

  • How do patients perceive doctors in a hospital setting?
  • What are young women’s experiences on dating sites?
  • What are non-experts’ ideas and opinions about climate change?
  • How is gender constructed in high school history teaching?

To answer any of these questions, you would collect data from a group of relevant participants and then analyze it. Thematic analysis allows you a lot of flexibility in interpreting the data, and allows you to approach large data sets more easily by sorting them into broad themes.

However, it also involves the risk of missing nuances in the data. Thematic analysis is often quite subjective and relies on the researcher’s judgement, so you have to reflect carefully on your own choices and interpretations.

Pay close attention to the data to ensure that you’re not picking up on things that are not there – or obscuring things that are.

Once you’ve decided to use thematic analysis, there are different approaches to consider.

There’s the distinction between inductive and deductive approaches:

  • An inductive approach involves allowing the data to determine your themes.
  • A deductive approach involves coming to the data with some preconceived themes you expect to find reflected there, based on theory or existing knowledge.

Ask yourself: Does my theoretical framework give me a strong idea of what kind of themes I expect to find in the data (deductive), or am I planning to develop my own framework based on what I find (inductive)?

There’s also the distinction between a semantic and a latent approach:

  • A semantic approach involves analyzing the explicit content of the data.
  • A latent approach involves reading into the subtext and assumptions underlying the data.

Ask yourself: Am I interested in people’s stated opinions (semantic) or in what their statements reveal about their assumptions and social context (latent)?

After you’ve decided thematic analysis is the right method for analyzing your data, and you’ve thought about the approach you’re going to take, you can follow the six steps developed by Braun and Clarke .

The first step is to get to know our data. It’s important to get a thorough overview of all the data we collected before we start analyzing individual items.

This might involve transcribing audio , reading through the text and taking initial notes, and generally looking through the data to get familiar with it.

Next up, we need to code the data. Coding means highlighting sections of our text – usually phrases or sentences – and coming up with shorthand labels or “codes” to describe their content.

Let’s take a short example text. Say we’re researching perceptions of climate change among conservative voters aged 50 and up, and we have collected data through a series of interviews. An extract from one interview looks like this:

Personally, I’m not sure. I think the climate is changing, sure, but I don’t know why or how. People say you should trust the experts, but who’s to say they don’t have their own reasons for pushing this narrative? I’m not saying they’re wrong, I’m just saying there’s reasons not to 100% trust them. The facts keep changing – it used to be called global warming.

In this extract, we’ve highlighted various phrases in different colors corresponding to different codes. Each code describes the idea or feeling expressed in that part of the text.

At this stage, we want to be thorough: we go through the transcript of every interview and highlight everything that jumps out as relevant or potentially interesting. As well as highlighting all the phrases and sentences that match these codes, we can keep adding new codes as we go through the text.

After we’ve been through the text, we collate together all the data into groups identified by code. These codes allow us to gain a a condensed overview of the main points and common meanings that recur throughout the data.

Next, we look over the codes we’ve created, identify patterns among them, and start coming up with themes.

Themes are generally broader than codes. Most of the time, you’ll combine several codes into a single theme. In our example, we might start combining codes into themes like this:

At this stage, we might decide that some of our codes are too vague or not relevant enough (for example, because they don’t appear very often in the data), so they can be discarded.

Other codes might become themes in their own right. In our example, we decided that the code “uncertainty” made sense as a theme, with some other codes incorporated into it.

Again, what we decide will vary according to what we’re trying to find out. We want to create potential themes that tell us something helpful about the data for our purposes.

Now we have to make sure that our themes are useful and accurate representations of the data. Here, we return to the data set and compare our themes against it. Are we missing anything? Are these themes really present in the data? What can we change to make our themes work better?

If we encounter problems with our themes, we might split them up, combine them, discard them or create new ones: whatever makes them more useful and accurate.

For example, we might decide upon looking through the data that “changing terminology” fits better under the “uncertainty” theme than under “distrust of experts,” since the data labelled with this code involves confusion, not necessarily distrust.

Now that you have a final list of themes, it’s time to name and define each of them.

Defining themes involves formulating exactly what we mean by each theme and figuring out how it helps us understand the data.

Naming themes involves coming up with a succinct and easily understandable name for each theme.

For example, we might look at “distrust of experts” and determine exactly who we mean by “experts” in this theme. We might decide that a better name for the theme is “distrust of authority” or “conspiracy thinking”.

Finally, we’ll write up our analysis of the data. Like all academic texts, writing up a thematic analysis requires an introduction to establish our research question, aims and approach.

We should also include a methodology section, describing how we collected the data (e.g. through semi-structured interviews or open-ended survey questions ) and explaining how we conducted the thematic analysis itself.

The results or findings section usually addresses each theme in turn. We describe how often the themes come up and what they mean, including examples from the data as evidence. Finally, our conclusion explains the main takeaways and shows how the analysis has answered our research question.

In our example, we might argue that conspiracy thinking about climate change is widespread among older conservative voters, point out the uncertainty with which many voters view the issue, and discuss the role of misinformation in respondents’ perceptions.

Definition:

Data collection is the process of gathering and collecting information from various sources to analyze and make informed decisions based on the data collected. This can involve various methods, such as surveys, interviews, experiments, and observation.

In order for data collection to be effective, it is important to have a clear understanding of what data is needed and what the purpose of the data collection is. This can involve identifying the population or sample being studied, determining the variables to be measured, and selecting appropriate methods for collecting and recording data.

Types of Data Collection

Types of Data Collection are as follows:

Primary Data Collection

Primary data collection is the process of gathering original and firsthand information directly from the source or target population. This type of data collection involves collecting data that has not been previously gathered, recorded, or published. Primary data can be collected through various methods such as surveys, interviews, observations, experiments, and focus groups. The data collected is usually specific to the research question or objective and can provide valuable insights that cannot be obtained from secondary data sources. Primary data collection is often used in market research, social research, and scientific research.

Secondary Data Collection

Secondary data collection is the process of gathering information from existing sources that have already been collected and analyzed by someone else, rather than conducting new research to collect primary data. Secondary data can be collected from various sources, such as published reports, books, journals, newspapers, websites, government publications, and other documents.

Qualitative Data Collection

Qualitative data collection is used to gather non-numerical data such as opinions, experiences, perceptions, and feelings, through techniques such as interviews, focus groups, observations, and document analysis. It seeks to understand the deeper meaning and context of a phenomenon or situation and is often used in social sciences, psychology, and humanities. Qualitative data collection methods allow for a more in-depth and holistic exploration of research questions and can provide rich and nuanced insights into human behavior and experiences.

Quantitative Data Collection

Secondary Data Analysis

Secondary data analysis involves using existing data that was collected for another purpose. Secondary data can come from various sources, such as government agencies, academic institutions, or private companies.

How to Collect Data

The following are some steps to consider when collecting data:

  • Define the objective : Before you start collecting data, you need to define the objective of the study. This will help you determine what data you need to collect and how to collect it.
  • Identify the data sources : Identify the sources of data that will help you achieve your objective. These sources can be primary sources, such as surveys, interviews, and observations, or secondary sources, such as books, articles, and databases.

Indirect Measurement of Intersectionality Using Data from the Understanding America Study

This article introduces a quantitative measure of intersectionality. Intersectionality is the examination of an individual's overlapping identities—for example, one's sex and race and ethnicity—and the relative privileges or barriers that a society perceives for or attaches to a given intersectional identity. We use data from the Understanding America Study ( UAS ) to construct a Sociopolitical Power Scale ( SPPS ) that measures societal perceptions of relative power among intersectional identities, and we test whether perceptions of intersectional identities differ from those of single-characteristic identities. UAS questions cover relative political and societal power between men and women and between racial and ethnic groups but not between intersectional identities. We therefore explore differences between men and women in the SPPS within racial and ethnic groups and racial and ethnic differences in the SPPS between men and women. We find some significant differences between intersectional and single-characteristic identities.

In this article, we show how we created a tool that social scientists across disciplines can use to study intersectionality and structural barriers. Intersectionality is the concept that an individual has multiple overlapping identities, such as sex and race and ethnicity, which can be subject to discrimination both individually and in combination. These identities are often associated with existing structural barriers, such as those encountered by Black people and women. For example, a Black woman has a merged identity as both a woman and a Black person that differs from her societally perceived identity as a member of either group singly.

We focus on people's perceptions about overall societal attitudes toward people in particular demographic groups rather than the perspectives of individuals about their own intersectional identities. We explore how intersectionality can amplify the discrimination experienced by certain groups. We also examine how discrimination, as measured by societal attitudes toward marginalized groups, can create structural barriers for those groups. Although the full breadth of the latter examination is beyond the scope of this article, social scientists can apply our measure of comparative sociopolitical power to their various fields of expertise to model the relationship between intersectionality and discrimination.

Defining “Structural Barriers”

Simms and others (2015, 4) define structural barriers as “obstacles that collectively affect a group disproportionately and perpetuate or maintain stark disparities in outcomes.” Hong and others (2021, 31) define structural barriers in the context of a job search as “the condition that no matter how good the person's qualifications may be, elements within the social and economic structures make it difficult for the person to obtain employment. These elements include secondary labor market; racial discrimination; immigrant status; gender discrimination; lack of jobs; transportation; neighborhood/location; and general structural factors.” Hong and others also examine how those factors affect the administration of income support programs, which is directly relevant to the Social Security Administration in its role of administering the Supplemental Security Income program.

History of the Study of Intersectionality

Among the origins of the concept of intersectionality is a 1976 case heard in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, DeGraffenreid v. General Motors Assembly Division . Five Black women who had been fired by General Motors ( GM ) brought a discrimination lawsuit against their former employer. The plaintiffs argued that they were discriminated against because they were both Black and women, not solely because they were Black and not solely because they were women: They acknowledged that GM hired Black men and White women. Ultimately, the judge denied that argument, writing that “the initial issue in this lawsuit is whether the plaintiffs are seeking relief from racial discrimination, or sex-based discrimination. The plaintiffs allege that they are suing on behalf of Black women, and that therefore this lawsuit attempts to combine two causes of action into a new special sub-category, namely, a combination of racial and sex-based discrimination.” The court decided that there was no protected class to be found at the intersection of the two identities and ruled in favor of  GM . At the time this case was being adjudicated, a theory of intersectionality was arising organically among the Black feminist community (for example, Smith 1983).

Crenshaw (1989) coined the term intersectionality in a law review article revisiting DeGraffenreid v. GM to explore systemic racism in general and its effects against Black women in particular. Crenshaw argued that it was impossible to separate the identity of being Black from the identity of being a woman. Instead, the two identities create a new intersectional identity, in which the discrimination associated with being Black and the discrimination associated with being a woman are amplified by their coexistence. Crenshaw (1991) identified three forms of intersectionality: representational, political, and structural. Representational intersectionality refers to the way intersectional identities are portrayed in culture and media. Political intersectionality refers to the way that an intersectional identity can combine two or more marginalized groups for whom some political objectives may be at cross-purposes. Structural intersectionality refers to the way various institutions perpetuate or eliminate the barriers faced by people with marginalized intersecting identities. Intersectionality describes the effects of multiple existing structural barriers in combination (Hong and others 2021), as the DeGraffenreid plaintiffs attempted to argue: They faced the structural employment barriers that women faced coupled with the structural employment barriers that Black people faced. That combination amplified the structural barriers that they would have faced had they been either Black men or White women.

Although we aim to create a measure of all forms of intersectionality, we see our model of structural intersectionality as most useful to the Social Security Administration and other government agencies in efforts to prevent discrimination in their hiring and employee development policies 1 and in administering their programs. Since Crenshaw (1991), numerous studies have used intersectionality to describe the unique combinations of challenges faced by people with particular sex-and-race identities across various realms, including politics (Hancock 2007; Holvino 2010), education (McCall 2005; Jones 2003), health care (Kelly 2009; Viruell-Fuentes, Miranda, and Abdulrahim 2012), and economics (Ladson-Billings and Tate 1995). Hong and others (2021) focused on labor dynamics and used data from a small sample (388 respondents) to construct a Perceived Employment Barrier Scale. Yet all those studies tend to focus on one particular aspect of intersectionality, while our measure is meant to model multiple elements and provide a comprehensive quantitative measure of intersectionality that social scientists can use to examine empirically how intersectional identities affect access to social services, societal power, and government benefits.

In our research, we explore whether a measure of intersectional identities can be created using a novel indirect regression approach applied to survey data on societal perceptions of different groups' social and political power. We seek to understand how the simultaneity of race or ethnicity and sex affect different groups' social standings and power in society by creating a quantitative metric we call the Sociopolitical Power Scale ( SPPS ). Although our examination is purely methodological, we propose ways that the SPPS could be used in models measuring social groups' interactions with government agencies and programs.

Data and Methods

We use data from the Understanding America Study ( UAS ), a nationally representative survey fielded by the University of Southern California's Center for Economic and Social Research, to construct the SPPS . UAS survey 135, titled “Health Insurance, Politics, and Social Attitudes and Values” and fielded May–June 2018, included a Social Construction module containing a series of questions addressing perceptions of population groups' relative societal and political power.

The UAS is an internet-based panel survey administered to participants aged 18 or older. UAS surveys cover a wide array of topics, including demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, political affiliation, financial literacy, and personality type. 2 If needed, participants are provided a tablet and internet connection. UAS  135 had 4,679 respondents among the 6,154  UAS panel participants at the time, providing a 76 percent response rate. 3

Demographic Information

Table 1 shows summary demographic characteristics of the UAS  135 respondents. Women outnumbered men, 57 percent to 43 percent. The majority of respondents (72 percent) were non-Hispanic White, while 8 percent were non-Hispanic Black and 11 percent were Hispanic (any race). Respondents' average years of education (14.5) included some years after a high school diploma, and the mean household income was almost $65,000.

In the following subsections, we provide a description of the method we used to create the SPPS , along with an analysis of that method and a discussion of the applicability of the scale and its possible uses and extensions.

SPPS Theory and Method

We aim to demonstrate the amplification of discrimination (or privilege) that Crenshaw (1989) identified so that it can be integrated into empirical social science research. The theoretical origins of the SPPS come from the psychosocial theory of social constructions, or the examination of the creation and endurance of stereotypes. Berger and Luckmann (1967) framed social constructions as the process by which beliefs and perceptions about groups of people become institutionalized such that the collective belief endures and becomes a dominant perception that is thus internalized by members of the groups that are the subject of these perceptions. For example, the societal perception of the experience being a Black woman reinforces the actual experience of being a Black woman. This in turn fortifies the societal perception of Black women, which differs from the societal perceptions both of Black people overall and of women overall. This exemplifies what Crenshaw (1989) calls the amplification of identities.

The SPPS combines the perceptions of societal power and political power into a scalar measure to help us better understand how those factors influence individuals' interactions with government agencies and programs. Although the possible combinations of intersectional identities may number in the hundreds, we simplify this analysis by focusing on the intersection of sex and race or ethnicity and limiting the latter to four groups: non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic Asian, and Hispanic (any race). 4 We test whether the SPPS results for a single-characteristic identity (such as being a Black person) differ from an intersectional identity (such as being a Black woman).

Constructing the SPPS

We use the responses to three UAS  135 questions to collect data on the perceived societal and political power of 13 population groups: men; women; White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian people; residents of suburban, urban, and rural areas; immigrants with a visa; immigrants without a visa; aged people; and people with a disability. The survey questions listed the groups in random order. We tested the questions using exploratory factor analysis in the STATA statistical software and determined that they were scalable—that is, amenable to inclusion in a scale. We also confirmed that the questions were loaded on a limited number of common factors, meaning that they are related by an underlying concept.

The three questions are listed below:

  • Political power. “Please rate the following groups of U.S. residents in terms of their political power, that is, how much politicians and lawmakers care about what the group wants.” Response options consist of very low (1), low (2), moderate (3), high (4), and very high (5).
  • Societal power. “Please rate the following groups of U.S. residents in terms of their level of societal power. By societal power we mean the ability that members of those groups have to get things done within U.S. society.” Response options consist of very low (1), low (2), moderate (3), high (4), and very high (5).
  • Social construction. “Thinking about those groups of U.S. residents in terms of how U.S. society generally views them, would you say the view is mostly negative, positive or somewhere in between?” Response options consist of negative (1), somewhat negative (2), neither positive nor negative  (3), somewhat positive (4), and positive (5).

We used principal component analysis ( PCA ) of the SPPS ' components—political power, societal power, and social construction—to ensure that they are different measures of an underlying concept and are thereby not biased by collinearity or correlation. PCA is an appropriate method of factor analysis because it looks for similarities in measures that have no prior theoretical structuring or grouping of observations (Bartholomew and others 2008; Jolliffe 2002). Chard, Rogofsky, and Yoong (2017) used PCA for their scalar measures and in constructing the weighted scale they used to analyze financial behavior and to create their Retirement Planning Index. We use PCA to test the independence of the political and societal power measures and to give insight into how they may be scaled together to create the SPPS . If the measures capture the same underlying concept, then we can expect a factor analysis to show that the components load on a small number of factors. If instead they capture different concepts, then we should see the opposite, loading on many factors with no single factor explaining most of the variance (Bartholomew and others 2008; Jolliffe 2002). 5

Table 2 shows the correlations among the responses to each of the three survey questions with respect to women. All of the correlation coefficients of the three questions lie between 0.5 and 0.6, suggesting that there is a substantial correlation. However, the correlations are not above the level (0.8) at which adding the second or third question would be of no analytical value.

Next, we created a scree plot of the eigenvalues for the three components (survey questions) for each of the 13 population groups (Chart 1). The scree plots indicate whether the information in the three questions could be summarized in a single index variable to represent sociopolitical power, or whether adding a second variable (second component) would provide significantly more information. An eigenvalue lower than 1 is commonly a clear indicator that the given component does not contain sufficient additional information to warrant attention. 6 The scree plots for the 13 population groups look very similar. In each case, the eigenvalues for the first component are close to 2, while the eigenvalues for the second and third components are well below 1. That result confirms that we can use a single index to represent the sociopolitical power of each of the groups.

Next, we analyze the PCA results for weighting of each factor (survey question), shown in Table 3, for each of the 13 groups we studied. In the example of women, the weights are similar: 0.578 for societal power, 0.570 for social construction, and 0.584 for political power. These weights indicate the relative contribution of the responses to each of these questions in the overall perceptions of the sociopolitical power of women as a group.

Across all 13 groups, the weights for each of the three questions are very similar. Within any group, the most dissimilar weights are those for the societal power question (0.595) and the social construction question (0.553) for people with a rural residence (a difference of 0.042, or about 7.6 percent of the weight for the social construction question). This result indicates that people perceive a difference between the societal power of rural residents (how powerful they are as a group) and their social construction (how society views them as a group).

Table 4 shows descriptive statistics on the SPPS scores. Possible SPPS scores range from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). The unweighted results support existing concepts of intersectionality. For example, men have a higher SPPS score (that is, more perceived sociopolitical power) than women, and White people have a significantly higher SPPS score than people of another race or ethnicity. Black people and women, the identities that intersect in Crenshaw (1989), have some of the lowest SPPS scores. The weighted results are fundamentally similar. For instance, the weighted mean SPPS score for White people is higher than the unweighted mean SPPS score, but only by 0.02.

Measuring Intersectional Identities Using the  SPPS

The survey questions do not cover intersectional identities so we cannot directly compute SPPS scores for those identities as we can for the 13 population groups examined in UAS  135. Instead, we use an indirect approach that begins with conducting regression analyses to test whether there are differences between men and women, and between racial and ethnic groups, in the perceived sociopolitical power of their own group. 7 To accomplish this, we first analyze differences between male and female respondents in the perceived sociopolitical power of their own racial or ethnic group. For instance, we examine whether Black women perceive lower sociopolitical power for Black people than Black men do and whether Hispanic women perceive lower sociopolitical power for Hispanic people than Hispanic men do. Next, we conduct similar analyses of female respondents' perceptions of women's sociopolitical power across racial and ethnic groups. For instance, we examine whether Black and Hispanic women perceive lower sociopolitical power for women than White women do.

Table 5 shows the results of our regression analysis of the relationship between sex and the perceived sociopolitical power for each respondent's own racial or ethnic group. Results for each racial and ethnic group are shown with and without control variables (age, education, and household income). In both cases, the dummy variable indicates the independent variable of interest: a female respondent. 8 The coefficients for the SPPS score for Black people are negative, showing that Black women perceive lower sociopolitical power for Black people than Black men do. The p -values of a test comparing the results for Black respondents to those for White people are both 0.05 or less. Similarly, Hispanic women perceive lower sociopolitical power for Hispanic people than Hispanic men do. We do not find such differences between the views of Asian men and women, and White women perceive slightly higher sociopolitical power for White people than White men do.

Table 6 shows the results of a regression analysis relating Black, Asian, and Hispanic women's perceptions of the sociopolitical power of women overall against White women's perceptions of the sociopolitical power of women overall. This sample includes only female respondents. As in Table 5, results are shown with and without control variables (age, education, and household income). The coefficient for SPPS scores of White female respondents relative to those of Black women (without control variables) is positive and significant. This indicates that White women perceive higher sociopolitical power for women overall than Black women do. 9 Hispanic women also perceive lower sociopolitical power for women than White women do. There are no significant differences between the views of White and Asian women. Tables 5 and 6 together show that Black women have lower perceptions of Black people's sociopolitical power than Black men have, and lower perceptions of women's sociopolitical power than White women have. Likewise, Hispanic women perceive lower sociopolitical power for Hispanic people than Hispanic men do, and lower sociopolitical power for women than White women do.

To summarize our results, we find that UAS  135 respondents, empaneled as a representative sample of the American population, have the following perceptions:

  • Sociopolitical power differs significantly by race, ethnicity, and sex. For example, Black and Hispanic people are generally perceived as having less sociopolitical power than White people and women are seen as having less sociopolitical power than men.
  • Black and Hispanic women perceive lower sociopolitical power for their own race or ethnicity than their male counterparts perceive.
  • Black and Hispanic women perceive lower sociopolitical power for women than White women perceive.

These findings support the concept of intersectionality and underscore the issues that were discussed in Black feminist literature as the theory of intersectionality was being developed. The concepts that we measure with the SPPS may support efforts to improve political efficacy for certain groups. 10

Overall, we have accomplished our goal of using an indirect approach to quantitatively assess intersectionality using survey data that combine factual elements (race, ethnicity, and sex) with attitudinal elements (perceptions of political and societal power). We combine those elements to empirically model intersectional identities. Further, our quantitative measures support the idea of the amplification of discrimination and privilege that Crenshaw (1989) discussed. Our results also complement Hong and others (2021, 47), who found that “elements of race and gender discrimination are given significant attention as co-occurring structural barriers.”

Limitations

The sample size for the UAS  135 Social Construction module was not large enough to allow us to examine intersectional identities at more than two levels (sex; race or ethnicity). However, as the UAS sample size increases, we envision the possibility of applying this method to study a third layer of identity, such as age, disability status, or another characteristic.

A second limitation is that the data we capture are from a single point in time, but they are influenced by a mosaic of societal forces that have come together over the years to create those perceptions. Those intrinsic factors include historic barriers that helped to create the situation the DeGraffenreid plaintiffs called to light and that continue to shape political and societal views today. Despite those limitations, we envision researchers using our SPPS , along with additional intersectional dimensions such as age, place of residence, disability status, and educational attainment, to see if any of those variables further amplify or decrease disparity in the  SPPS .

Future Research

The SPPS can be useful for research on a variety of topics, many of which are particularly relevant to Social Security researchers. For example, it can be combined with the diverse data collected by the UAS , ranging from respondent retirement preparedness to policy preferences and experiences with government agencies.

We would like to see the SPPS applied to study people with disabilities (and disability program beneficiaries in particular). We would also like to see the SPPS used to evaluate the public's experiences with the Social Security Administration, perhaps by expanding on previous research on people's preferred channels of receiving program information, to identify any potential structural barriers that limit use of any of those channels. The SPPS could also be used to study the myriad issues related to employment such as the declining availability of private pensions, and to examine wealth accumulation for retirement, building (for example) on work by Kijakazi, Smith, and Runes (2019).

We envision the SPPS being used to determine how the COVID -19 pandemic's effects were distributed among different groups, and incorporated into studies on topics such as homeownership and incarceration, where systemic racism is known to be a persistent historical factor. 11 Again, although the SPPS is a snapshot measure of cumulative systemic barriers, it can illuminate how those historical factors have affected different groups in modern America.

  6 Eigenvalues reflect the coefficients of eigenvectors, which give the various magnitudes of the axes of those vectors. They are the calculated lines passing through the observed data, which indicate their covariance.   7 Our indirect approach limits the risk of creating social desirability bias because it does not nudge respondents to think about intersectionality. In seminal research on equality, Chong (1993, 869) observes: “Since respondents tend to answer questions off the tops of their heads, it is easy to see how survey results can be biased by altering the wording, format, or context of the survey questions. By making certain cues in the question more prominent than others, we can affect which frames of reference respondents will use to base their opinions. For example, respondents were regularly swayed during these interviews by the intimation or mention of honorific principles such as free speech, majority rule, or minority rights.”

  8 We focus on female respondents in this analysis because, as separate regressions address the race-and-ethnicity component, using women's perceptions as our variable of interest allows us to examine that demographic intersection.

  9 The results are qualitatively similar when including controls but the magnitude is smaller and only marginally significant. The reduced coefficient when adding control variables may be explained by education mediating the relationship. Women with more education perceive higher sociopolitical power for women, and there are disparities in the education levels of White and Black women in the sample.

Morrisons has admitted it "went a bit too far" with self-checkouts.

Chief executive Rami Baitiéh says the supermarket is "reviewing the balance between self-checkouts and manned tills".

Some will be removed.

Mr Baitiéh told The Telegraph : "Morrisons went a bit too far with the self-checkout. This had the advantage of driving some productivity. However, some shoppers dislike it, mainly when they have a full trolley."

The executive also said self checkouts had driven more shoplifting.

Asda's chief financial officer Michael Gleeson said last week the technology had reached its limit - and said his firm would be putting more staff on tills.

Northern grocer Booths ditched almost all self-checkouts last year amid customer service concerns.

Over at Marks & Spencer, chairman Archie Norman last year blamed self-checkouts for a rise in "middle-class shoplifting".

But Tesco CEO Ken Murphy is an advocate: "We genuinely believe, at the end of the day, it provides a better customer experience."

The number of drivers visited by bailiffs due to unpaid traffic fines has increased substantially, according to a report.

Four million penalty charge notices (PCNs) were referred to bailiffs in England and Wales in the 2023-24 financial year, it is claimed.

This is up from 2.4 million during the previous 12 months, 1.9 million in 2019-20 and 1.3 million in 2017-18.

Ted Baker is the latest in a string of high-street giants to call in administrators in recent years, with shops set to disappear this week.

But how does it affect you? 

Purchases and returns

You can still buy items online and in store until they close, but you could run into trouble returning them. 

If the retailer stops trading, it may not be able to get your money back to you.

If that is the case, you would have to file a claim with Teneo (Ted Baker's administrator) to join a list of creditors owed money by Ted Baker – and even then there's no guarantee you'd get your money back.

If you have a gift card, you need to use it while you still can.

Credits and debits

You can file a claim with your debit or credit card provider to recover lost funds - but how exactly does that work?

  • Credit card:  If you bought any single item costing between £100-£30,000 and paid on a credit card, the card firm is liable if something goes wrong. If any purchase was less than £100, you may still be able to get your money back via chargeback;
  • Debit card:  Under chargeback, your bank can try to get your money back from Ted Baker's bank. However, be aware that this is not a legal requirement and it can later be disputed and recalled.

Many retailers boosted wages after living wage/minimum wage changes in spring.

Figures show German discount brands Aldi and Lidl top the list of major UK supermarkets when it comes to staff hourly pay - after Lidl introduced its third pay increase of the year in May to match its closest rival.

Meanwhile, Morrisons is at the bottom of the pack for staff pay outside London, with hourly wages starting at the National Living Wage (£11.44).

How do other companies compare when it comes to pay and benefits? We've taken a look...

Pay: £12.40 an hour outside London and £13.65 inside the M25

Aldi announced in March it was bringing in its second pay rise of the year as part of its aim to be the best-paying UK supermarket.

From 1 June, hourly pay rose from £12 an hour to £12.40 outside the M25 and £13.55 to £13.65 in London. 

Aldi is one of the only supermarkets to give staff paid breaks. It also offers perks such as discounted gym membership and cinema tickets, and financial planning tools. However, there are no cheaper meals, staff discounts or bonus schemes.

Pay:  £12.04 an hour outside London and £13.21 inside the M25

As of 1 July, hourly wages for Asda supermarket staff rose to £12.04 per hour from £11.11, with rates for London staff also going up to £13.21.

As part of the July changes, Asda brought in the option for free later-life care or mortgage advice. The company also offers a pension and a free remote GP service.

Pay:  £12 an hour outside London and £13.15 inside the M25

Co-op boosted its minimum hourly wage for customer team members from £10.90 to £12 nationally as the national living wage rose to £11.44 in April.

For staff inside the M25, rates rose from £12.25 to £13.15.

The perks are better than some. Workers can get 30% off Co-op branded products in its food stores as well as 10% off other brands. Other benefits include a cycle to work scheme, childcare vouchers and discounts on its other services.

Pay:  £11.50 an hour outside London and £12.65 inside the M25

Iceland says it pays £11.50 for staff aged 21 and over - 6p above the minimum wage. Employees in London receive £12.65 per hour.

Staff are also offered a 15% in-store discount, which was raised from 10% in 2022 to help with the cost of living.

The firm says it offers other perks such as a healthcare scheme and Christmas vouchers.

Pay:  £12.40 an hour outside London and £13.65 inside the M25

From June, Lidl matched its rival Aldi by raising its hourly wage to £12.40 for workers outside the M25 and £13.55 for those inside.

Lidl also offers its staff a 10% discount card from the first working day, as well as other perks such as dental insurance and fertility leave. 

Marks and Spencer's hourly rate for store assistants was hiked from £10.90 to £12 for staff outside London and from £12.05 to £13.15 for London workers from April.

The grocer also offers a 20% staff discount after the probation period as well as discretionary bonus schemes and a free virtual GP service.

Pay:  £11.44 an hour outside London and £12.29 inside the M25

Along with many other retailers, Morrisons increased the hourly wage for staff outside the M25 in line with the national living wage of £11.44 in April.

Employees in London receive an 85p supplement.

While it's not the most competitive for hourly pay, Morrisons offers perks including staff discounted meals, a 15% in-store discount and life assurance scheme.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury's hourly rate for workers outside London rose to £12 from March, and £13.15 for staff inside the M25.

The company also offers a 10% discount card for staff to use at Sainsbury's, Argos and Habitat, as well as a range of benefits including season ticket loans and long service rewards.

Pay:  £12.02 an hour outside London and £13.15 inside the M25

Since April, Tesco staff have been paid £12.02 an hour nationally - up from £11.02 - while London workers get £13.15 an hour.

The supermarket giant also provides a 10% in-store discount, discounted glasses, health checks and insurance, and free 24/7 access to a virtual GP.

Staff get their pay boosted by 10% on a Sunday if they joined the company before 24 July 2022.

Pay:  £11.55 an hour outside London and £12.89 inside the M25

Waitrose store staff receive £11.55 an hour nationally, while workers inside the M25 get at least £12.89.

Staff can also get access to up to 25% off at Waitrose's partner retailer John Lewis as well as 20% in Waitrose shops. 

JLP (the John Lewis Partnership) gives staff a bonus as an annual share-out of profit determined by the firm's performance. In 2021-22 the bonus was 3% of pay; however, it has not paid the bonus for the past two years.

Dozens of Ted Baker stores will shut for the last time this week amid growing doubts over a future licensing partnership with the retail tycoon Mike Ashley.

Sky News understands that talks between Mr Ashley's Frasers Group and Authentic, Ted Baker's owner, have stalled three months after it appeared that an agreement was imminent.

Administrators are overseeing the closure of its remaining 31 UK shops.

One store source said they had been told that this Tuesday would be the final day of trading.

The housing market experienced a surge in activity following the Bank of England's recent decision to cut interest rates, according to a leading property website.

Estate agents reported a 19% jump in enquiries about properties for sale after 1 August, when compared with the same period last year, research by Rightmove found.

It came after the Bank cut rates for the first time in more than four years from 5.25% to 5%.

The lead negotiator for major train union ASLEF has denied the union sees the new government as a "soft touch" after announcing fresh strikes two days after train drivers were offered a pay deal.

Drivers working for London North Eastern Railway will walk out on weekends from the end of August in a dispute over working agreements.

Lead negotiator Nigel Roebuck said it is a separate issue from the long-running row over pay, which looks likely to be resolved after a much-improved new offer from the government.

Over 40 bottles of fake vodka have been seized from a shop in Scotland after a customer reported "smelling nail varnish".

The 35cl bottles, fraudulently labelled as the popular brand Glen's, were recovered from the shop in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

Officers from the council's environmental health officers and Food Standard Scotland (FSS) sent them for analysis after a customer raised the alarm by saying they smelt nail varnish from one of the bottles.

The bottles were found to be counterfeit.

Britons don't have long left to claim cost of living assistance from the Household Support Fund.

Introduced in October 2021, the scheme provides local councils with funding which can be used to support those struggling most with the rising cost of living.

The vast majority of councils operate their version of the Household Support Fund on a "first come, first serve" basis and will officially end the schemes once the funding has run out in September.

The help provided by councils has ranged from free cash payments, council tax discounts, and vouchers for supermarkets and energy providers.

Who is eligible?

Local authorities were instructed to target the funding at "vulnerable households in most need of support to help with significantly rising living costs" when it was first rolled out.

In particular, councils were guided to make priority considerations for those who: 

  • Are eligible but not claiming qualifying benefits;
  • Became eligible for benefits after the relevant qualifying dates;
  • Are receiving housing benefit only;
  • Are normally eligible for benefits but who had a nil award in the qualifying period.

If you do not meet these criteria, you can still contact your local council , with many having broadened their criteria for eligibility.

Weapons maker BAE Systems is the big loser on the FTSE 100 this morning, with its shares down almost 3% in early trading.

It comes following reports over the weekend that the German government is planning to scale back aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia – in what would be a blow to the arms industry.

German media said ministers are set to slash support for Kyiv to 6% of current levels by 2027 in their upcoming budget.

However, the government there has rejected the reports and has denied it is "stopping support" to Ukraine.

Whatever the truth, the reports appear to have spooked traders.

Other companies involved in the defence sector, including Rolls-Royce Plc and Chemring Group, are also down more than 2% and 1% respectively on Monday.

It comes amid a slight slump in early trading, with the FTSE 100 down just over 0.2%, although the FTSE 250 is up 0.07%.

Gainers this morning include housebuilders Barratt Developments, up 1.5%, and Redrow Plc, which is up almost 3%.

Barratt said today it intends to push ahead with a planned £2.5bn merger with its rival despite concerns from the competition regulator.

Meanwhile, the price of oil is down amid concerns of weaker demand in China.

Ongoing ceasefire talks in the Israel-Hamas conflict have also raised hopes of cooling tensions in the Middle East, which would help ease supply risks and worries.

A barrel of the benchmark Brent Crude is currently priced at just over $79 (£61).

On the currency markets, this morning £1 buys $1.29 US or €1.17.

Winter energy bills are projected to rise by 9%, according to a closely watched forecast.

The price cap from October to December will go up to £1,714 a year for the average user, Cornwall Insight says.

It would be a £146 rise from the current cap, which is controlled by energy regulator Ofgem and aims to prevent households on variable tariffs being ripped off.

The cap doesn't represent a maximum bill. Instead it creates an average bill by limiting how much you pay per unit of gas and electricity, as well as setting a maximum daily standing charge (which all households must pay to stay connected to the grid).

Ofgem will announce the October cap this Friday.

"This is not the news households want to hear when moving into the colder months," said the principal consultant at Cornwall, Dr Craig Lowrey.

"Following two consecutive falls in the cap, I'm sure many hoped we were on a steady path back to pre-crisis prices. 

"However, the lingering impact of the energy crisis has left us with a market that's still highly volatile and quick to react to any bad news on the supply front.

"Despite this, while we don't expect a return to the extreme prices of recent years, it's unlikely that bills will return to what was once considered normal. Without significant intervention, this may well be the new normal."

Cornwall Insight warned that the highly volatile energy market and unexpected global events, such as the recent escalating tensions in the Russia-Ukraine war, could see prices rise further at the start of the new year.

To avoid this vulnerability, Cornwall Insight said domestic renewable energy production should increase and Britain should wean itself off energy imports.

Kellogg's appears to have shrunk its packets of Corn Flakes. 

Two of its four different pack sizes have reduced in weight by 50g, according to The Sun. 

What used to be 720g boxes are now 670g, while 500g boxes have become 450g. 

The newspaper says the 670g boxes are being sold for £3.20 in Tesco - the same price customers were paying for the larger box back in May. 

The 450g boxes are being sold for £2.19, only slightly less than the previous price of £2.25.

Other supermarkets have similar pricing, although in Morrisons the price has gone down in proportion to the size reduction.

The 250g and 1kg pack sizes remain unchanged. 

Kellogg's has said it is up to shops to choose what they charge, but Tesco said the manufacturer should comment on pricing. 

Sky News has contacted Kellogg's for comment.

A spokesperson is quoted by The Sun: "Kellogg's Corn Flakes are available in four different box sizes to suit different shopper preferences and needs. 

"As the cost of ingredients and production processes increase, it costs us more to make our products than it used to.

"This can impact the recommended retail price. It's the grocer's absolute discretion and decision what price to charge shoppers."
