Essay On Football

Football is played by 11 players on both sides in order to put the ball into the opposing goal. To play the game, players can use any part of their body except their arms or hands. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to use his hands to touch the ball. The goalkeeper is the last line of defence, and his sole responsibility is to prevent the ball from entering the net.

The team is made up of three parts: attack, midfield, and defence. The game is a test of stamina, skill, and, most importantly, teamwork. The goal is to score as many goals as possible within the duration of 90 minutes. The team with the maximum number of goals at the end of regulation time wins.

Football's first rules and regulations were written down in England in the late 1800s. The game has evolved since then. To keep up with the game, the playing style became much more complex, and more rules were added. Football is now one of the most-watched sports on the planet. The modern game of football is made up of attackers, who lead the entire team, and midfielders, who form the team's core and serve as the link between the forwards and defenders. Defenders defend against opposition attacks and protect the goal. Different formations, strategies, tactics, and techniques emerged over time, making the game more fun and interesting.

It is the coach's or the manager's responsibility to manage the entire squad. The coach may make three substitutions during a 90-minute game divided into two halves. A total of four referees oversee the entire event, including one referee, two linesmen, and a fourth official. It is the responsibility of the referees to ensure that the game runs smoothly, and the referee's decision is the final word in any case. Football is popular all over the world because of the zeal with which its players play the game. It is not an easy task to play football for a total of 90 minutes. It takes a lot of stamina as well as world-class ball control and mastery.

Professional footballers are extremely dedicated athletes who start playing football as a child and are scouted by big clubs that train them in world-class facilities. To perform on the world stage, the players must master the ball and have a brilliant footballing mind. These are not easy skills to master and necessitate years of dedication and practice.

Football Players | Pele, Maradona, Johan Cryuff, and Ronaldinho are some of the greatest footballers of all time. The current football era is dominated by two all-time greats, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. There are many heated debates about who is better, but one thing is certain: both are professional athletes with great desire and discipline.

FIFA World Cup | The FIFA World Cup, which takes place every four years, is the most important international tournament. The final event is attended by 32 countries who qualify for it. Only one team is crowned World Champion at the end of the competition. France won the World Cup in 2018 under the direction of Coach Didier Deschamps. As of 2022, the FIFA world cup was held in Qatar and the final match was won by Argentina. The four qualifying teams for the finals of FIFA 2022 were Argentina, Croatia, France and Morocco.

Popular Teams | Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, AC Milan, and many other clubs are among the best in the world. Spain, England, France, Italy, and Germany are the top five footballing nations, as determined by the popularity of their leagues, and their respective leagues are La Liga, Premier League, France Ligue 1, Serie A, and Bundesliga.

Story Of Christiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo who is sometimes also referred to as the greatest of all time revealed that his mother wanted to abort him because of poverty, his father's alcoholism, and having too many children already, but her doctor refused. Ronaldo grew up in a low-income family. He went on to become the club's first player to play for the under-16, under-17, and under-18 teams, and first teams, all in the same season. It takes a lot of stamina as well as world-class ball control and mastery. A good game sense is also required to perform well on the pitch.

Football requires a high level of physical fitness. The players must run and stay active until the end of the game. They must chase the ball and intercept opposing players at all times; they must defend their goals at all times. Head balls, chest passes, rabonas, and scissor kicks are all artistic techniques. To play the game, players can use any part of their body except their arms or hands. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to use his hands to touch the ball. The goalkeeper is the last line of defence, and his sole responsibility is to prevent the ball from entering the net. Professional football requires a great deal of dedication and discipline. Talented players are scouted when they are young, and they are trained in academies for several years before being scouted by bigger clubs based on their performance.

An Introduction

Football is a game that requires strength, loads of fitness and cleverness to be played. It is a game of 90 minutes. There are two teams. Each team can have a maximum of 11 players and a minimum of 7 players. There are two goalposts. The goalkeepers from each of the teams prevent the ball from entering the goal area. The other players try to zigzag their way ahead by kicking the ball. They try to pass the opponents to score a goal. It is a highly intense game with excitement, emotion, blood, and sweat.

The History of Football

In the ancient days, football was not made of leather. In some places, people blew up pigs’ bladders to make footballs. In the Mesoamerican culture, football was played with a rock. It denoted the Sun God. The unfortunate thing was, the losing team’s captain was sacrificed to God. This element of violence and barbarism in football continued even when the early signs of modern football started emerging in England.

As the world moved in the 19th century, this game got separated into two forms. In one form, there was the provision to carry the ball with hands and in the other, handling the ball was forbidden except for the goalkeeper. During this time, the rules of the game were set and the violence associated with it was largely reduced.

Why Do So Many People Love Playing Football?

Football, unlike cricket, has no moment of dullness. There is excitement till the last second of the 90-minute game. The joy of passing the ball from the jungle of opponents, and the joy of smashing the ball to the goal is priceless. As the player is moving forward with the ball, there is always that danger of getting the ball snatched away by the opponent. Then there are expert players like Messi or Beckham who magically make the ball take a curve-turn all the while in the air.

There are also heated exchanges among the players. The players take the competition very seriously. No football fan can ever forget the head-butt of Zidane or the attitude of Ronaldo. At the same time, one can also never forget the moment of the Croatian President hugging the players of the country who sadly lost the World Cup Final in 2018. The emotions run high.

Football in India

India is known for cricket. As a result, football gets less attention here. The Bengalis are the forerunners in the football world in India. The All India Football Federation is doing all it can to promote football in the country. Apart from the traditional Santosh Trophy, in India, there are two football leagues - I-League and the Super League.

Gradually, football is gaining traction in India. In fact, India is gradually getting recognized in the international football world. The 2017 U-17 Football World cup was held in India. This is the first time that a major FIFA event took place in the country. There are many football players like Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Anirudh Thapa, and more who are relevant in the psyche of the Indians.

Football is a game where people have to give their hundred percent. There is no pretension. It is not just a game of tactics and strength, but also a game of emotions.

Other variants include American football (where there are more players on each team), association football (where teams use smaller balls), rugby union (which uses a leather ball), Australianrules football (played with a large oval ball), Gaelic football (played with an oblong ball), and Japanese football (which uses an egg-shaped ball). There are also variations such as indoor soccer, beach soccer, street soccer, indoor hockey, and martial arts tournaments that incorporate elements of football into their gameplay.

There are many benefits to playing football. It improves hand-eye coordination, agility, balance, stamina, speed, strength, and endurance. It can help people learn teamwork and communication skills. It can also improve mental and physical health. Football is a great way to get exercise and build relationships with others.

History of Football

Football has a long and interesting history. Originally, the sport was played with a ball and two teams of 15 players. Over time, the rules have changed, but the basic premise remains the same- two teams go head to head trying to score by either kicking or throwing the ball into the other team’s goal.

The modern game of football can be traced back to Britain in 1863, when students at Rugby School decided to play with a round ball instead of a rugby ball. The game quickly spread throughout England and Wales and was codified in 1874 as Association Football. The first international match took place between England and Scotland in 1872, and by 1884, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) had been formed to regulate the sport.

In 1895, American Walter Camp established rules for American football that are still in use today. The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920, and since then it has become one of the most popular leagues in the world. Other popular leagues include the English Premier League (EPL), La Liga ACB (Spanish Professional Basketball League), Serie A (Italian Professional Football League), Ligue 1 (French Professional Football League), Bundesliga (German Professional Football League), SBL (Swiss Basketball League), NBL (National Basketball League) and many more.

There are many famous footballers around the world, from Ronaldo to Zidane, Messi to Pele. It is a truly global sport, with fans in every country and on every continent. Football is truly the world’s game.

Types of Football

There are many different types of football that people across the globe enjoy. American football, association football, rugby league, Australian rules football and Gaelic football are all types of football that can be found in different parts of the world.

American Football is the most popular type of football in the United States. It is a full-contact sport that is played with a ball and two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with end zones. The objective of American Football is to score points by advancing the ball down the field by running with it or passing it to a teammate.

Association Football is one of the oldest forms of football and is popular in countries such as England, Germany and Brazil. Association Football is similar to American Football but has some subtle differences. For example, Association Football does not have an overt physical presence between players like American Football does and instead relies on individual skills and strength to win possession of the ball.

Rugby League is a full contact sport that originated in New Zealand in 1820. Rugby League evolved from rugby union which was played in England at the time. Rugby League features fifteen players on each team who try to score goals by kicking a ball through an opponent’s goal posts.

Australian Rules Football is another form of football that originated in Australia. Australian Rules Football features thirteen players on each team who try to score goals by kicking a ball through an opponent’s goal posts from behind their own goal line. The game typically lasts for sixty minutes and is played on a rectangular field with end zones.

Gaelic Football is a type of football that is popular in Ireland. Gaelic Football is a full contact sport that features fifteen players on each team who try to score goals by kicking a ball through an opponent’s goal post from behind their own goal line. The game typically lasts for seventy minutes and is played on a rectangular field with end zones.

Rules of Football

Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is a physical and mental challenge that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. There are many rules of football, which can vary from country to country. The following are some of the most important rules:

-The game is played with a round ball that is about 27 inches (70 cm) in circumference. – Players must use their hands and arms to control the ball, and they must not touch it with their feet. -A player who loses control of the ball or who fails to pass it to a teammate within 10 seconds will be penalized with a free kick. -A goal is scored when a player kicks the ball through an opponent’s goalposts from inside the opponent’s half of the field. A goal cannot be scored if the ball rebounds off any object and goes into play again beyond the halfway line. -If a player commits an offence that results in a penalty, his team will be awarded a free kick at the spot of the offence. If this free kick is successful, his team will regain possession of the ball at its original position.

Essay on Football – 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay For Children

Shraddha Mishra

Key Points To Remember When Writing An Essay On Football For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on football for kids, a paragraph about football for children, short essay on my ‘favourite game: football’ for kids, long essay on football for children, what will your child learn from an essay on football.

Today’s increasing pressure on the children in school is several folds higher than a few years ago. An essay on football for classes 1, 2 and 3 kids captures kids’ interest and helps them gain some writing skills. However, this change has helped get Indian children up to a good ranking globally, and there is a visible improvement in students’ vocabulary and language skills. These essays are mainly targeted toward common interests like an essay about football in English or other interesting topics and famous personalities like Sachin Tendulkar and Chandrashekhar Azad. Here is how you can develop a good write-up on football.

Essay writing plays a major role in this pursuit of better language skills, and children are made to write articles, paragraphs, and essays starting from a young age, class 1 in most cases. Here is a list of points to understand how to write an essay on football.

  • Always start your essay with a short introduction.
  • Be clear with your facts. Since it is a popular sport, do not add things you are unsure about.
  • In the case of short articles for lower classes, it should be fine to stick to general statements.
  • Maintain a good continuity between your paragraphs.

When writing a few lines on football for your children, keep a good balance between personalised content and general facts. Here is how you can write a short essay for classes 1 and 2.

  • Everyone in my class has their favourite hobbies, and so do I.
  • My favourite hobby is playing football after school.
  • I play regularly on the ground next to my home with my friends.
  • I also enjoy watching football matches at home with my parents.
  • My favourite player is Lionel Andres Messi, and he is my role model.
  • My favourite part about playing football is when I score goals for our team.
  • We play very friendly and keep a healthy competition between us.
  • I have taken part in many league matches in our school and hometown.
  • I also have a few medals and certificates for my wins.
  • I wish to grow better and improve my football skills with practice.

Since the popularity of football is sure to be maintained through many years to come, it is a very common topic to be asked for an essay or composition. You can write about the game as a small paragraph.

Football is one of the most popular games all over the globe. It is played in many forms in different countries, like soccer, rugby, American football and more. As a thumb rule, a team comprises of 11 players, where one is a goalkeeper. The players run around during the whole game, scoring goals by kicking the ball through the post. It is a fun game that many school-going children enjoy across many countries, including India. The game is also known as soccer in South Africa, Australia, and North America. There are many famous tournaments which are played as well. The most widely known one is the FIFA world cup, which takes place every four years. I enjoy watching football and playing it with my friends every day!

When you write a short essay on football for relatively higher classes, it would be more appropriate to include more facts like the rules and regulations of the game or so. Here is how you can write up a good paragraph.

My favourite game is football. I have been a big fan of Manchester City’s team ever since I started watching football on TV with my father. I watch all their matches without missing even one. Especially the FIFA world cup is something that keeps me excited for many days before it starts. I also play football in school with my friends every day, and I am the goalkeeper of my team. We have participated in a few league matches and tournaments with other schools. I want to improve my skills like my favourite players in the future. The game of football is so much more than just a simple sport. It is a complex exercise for physical and mental health as it involves a lot of concentration and focus. It also helps to build good team spirit while playing in teams. That’s why, it is my favourite sport.

As we progress to higher classes, the write-ups require longer paragraphs with additional subheadings. When such a situation arises, another factor of paragraph continuity should be kept in mind. Here is an example essay for class 3 on the topic of football.

Football is a game which requires combined mastery and skills in different aspects like strength, fitness, cleverness, and teamwork. It is a game played by 11 players in most cases and for 90 minutes. This game is a fun and entertaining one, where you get to witness the players pass around the ball with swift techniques and score goals left and right.

History And Origin Of Football

Folk football has always been part of medieval times. In ancient days, the ball the players used were made with a wide range of materials, many of which were quite weird. Some even used balls made out of the pig’s bladder, obtained after blowing up the animal. Records say Tsu’ Chu, a game played in the Han Dynasty, was closer to football as it involved a ball that players used to push through a 30-40 cm opening.

Benefits Of Playing Football

There are many benefits of playing football every day, and a few of the noteworthy ones include the following.

  • Improved aerobic capacity because of intense activity for 90 minutes.
  • Better cardiovascular health while maintaining good health and burning calories.
  • Lowers body fat
  • Improves muscle tone and strength
  • Promotes teamwork
  • Good exercise for coordination
  • Better self-esteem
  • How Is Football Played?

Being a short game of just 90 minutes, the game’s entirety is filled with excitement. Every time a player tries to take the ball towards the goal post, it is similar to watching a movie. There are many associated factors like what the opponents do to defend and how much effort they put into scoring the goal. It is always interesting to watch pro players like Ronaldo and Messi show off their skills on the field.

The football teams consist of 11 players and are played in several tournaments both nationally and internationally. The game is literally what is stated in its name, where players kick the ball with their feet towards the goalposts on either side to score points for their team. The different techniques and skills used by professional teams from diverse backgrounds are more interesting. These players tend to show variations with every game, and many fans find it very interesting to keep track of such information and details.

By writing essays about how football is an interesting and exciting sport, your child will be motivated to get into good physical activity as a regular hobby. As we discussed before, having a hobby like a football is good in multiple aspects. Your child also learns about the game’s details while framing the composition on football.

Every child must know how to write a proper essay to improve their writing skills. Hence it is essential to start teaching them such skills from a young age.

How to Write a Non-Cliche College Essay About Sports + Examples

What’s covered:, what makes a sports essay cliche.

  • How To Make Your Sports Essay Unique

Great Examples of College Essays About Sports

Where to get your college essay edited for free, or by an expert.

You’ve been brainstorming essay topics for your college applications, and you think you’ve finally found the right one: an extended metaphor likening your experience on the field with overcoming personal struggles. The problem: many other students have this same thought.

The purpose of a college essay is to make yourself stand out as a unique individual, but when students write about sports, they often blend in. Because of that, students are usually advised to pick a different topic.

That being said, it is possible to write a non-cliche college essay about sports if you put in a little extra effort. Read along to learn how to make your sports essay different from all the other sports essays.

Sports essays are cliche when they follow a standard trajectory. Some of these trajectories include writing a story about:

  • An agonizing defeat
  • Forging bonds with teammates
  • Overcoming adversity
  • Overcoming an injury
  • Refusing to quit
  • Victory during a big game

Because sports essays have very similar themes and “lessons learned,” it can be difficult to make your story stand out. These trajectories also often focus too much on the sport or storyline, and not enough on the writer’s reflections and personality.

As you write your essay, try to think about what your experience says about you rather than what you learned from your experience. You are more than just one lesson you learned!

(Keep in mind that the sports essay is not the only college essay cliche. Learn about other essay cliches and how to fix them in our complete guide).

How to Make Your Sports Essay Unique

1. focus on a specific moment or reflection..

The college essay is a way for students to humanize themselves to admissions officers. You do not feel human if you are describing yourself as just another player on the field!

One important way to make your essay about you (not just about sports) is by focusing on a specific moment in time and inviting the reader to join you in that moment. Explain to the reader what it would be like to be sitting in that locker room as you questioned the values of the other players on your team. Ask your reader to sit with you on the cot in the trainer’s room as your identity was stripped away from you when they said “your body can’t take this anymore.” Bring your reader to the dinner table and involve them in your family’s conversation about how sports were affecting your mental health and your treatment of those around you.

Intense descriptions of a specific experience will evoke emotions in your reader and allow them to connect with you and feel for you.

When in doubt, avoid anything that can be covered by ESPN. On ESPN, we see the games, we see the benches, we even see the locker rooms and training rooms. Take your reader somewhere different and show them something unique.

2. Use sports to point out broader themes in your life.

The main risk when writing about sports is neglecting to write about yourself. Before you get started, think about the main values that you want to express in your sports essay. Sports are simply your avenue for telling the reader what makes you unique.

As a test, imagine if you were a pianist. Would you be able to talk about these same values? What if you were a writer? Or a chemist? Articulating your values is the end, and sports should simply be your means.

Some values that you might want to focus on:

  • Autonomy (you want to be able to set your mind to anything and achieve it on your own)
  • Growth (you seek improvement constantly)
  • Curiosity (you are willing to try anything once)
  • Vulnerability (you aren’t afraid to fail, as long as you give it your all)
  • Community (you value the feedback of others and need camaraderie to succeed)
  • Craft (you think that with deliberate care, anything can be perfected)
  • Responsibility (you believe that you owe something to those around you and perhaps they also owe something to you)

You can use the ESPN check again to make sure that you are using sports as an avenue to show your depth.

Things ESPN covers: how a player reacts to defeat, how injuries affect a player’s gameplay/attitude, how players who don’t normally work well together are working together on their new team.

Things ESPN doesn’t cover: the conversation that a player had with their mother about fear of death before going into a big surgery (value: family and connection), the ways that the intense pressure to succeed consumed a player to the point they couldn’t be there for the people in their life (value: supporting others and community), the body image issues that weigh on a player’s mind when playing their sport and how they overcame those (value: health and growth).

3. Turn a cliche storyline on its head.

There’s no getting around the fact that sports essays are often cliche. But there is a way to confront the cliche head-on. For example, lots of people write essays about the lessons they learned from an injury, victory, and so on, but fewer students explain how they are embracing those lessons.

Perhaps you learned that competition is overwhelming for you and you prefer teamwork, so you switched from playing basketball to playing Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe, when your softball career ended abruptly, you had to find a new identity and that’s when you became obsessed with your flower garden and decided to pursue botany. Or maybe, you have stuck with football through it all, but your junior-year mental health struggle showed you that football should be fun and you have since started a nonprofit for local children to healthily engage with sports.

If your story itself is more cliche, try bringing readers to the present moment with you and show why the cliche matters and what it did for you. This requires a fair amount of creativity. Ensure you’re not parroting a frequently used topic by really thinking deeply to find your own unique spin.

Night had robbed the academy of its daytime colors, yet there was comfort in the dim lights that cast shadows of our advances against the bare studio walls. Silhouettes of roundhouse kicks, spin crescent kicks, uppercuts and the occasional butterfly kick danced while we sparred. She approached me, eyes narrowed with the trace of a smirk challenging me. “Ready spar!” Her arm began an upward trajectory targeting my shoulder, a common first move. I sidestepped — only to almost collide with another flying fist. Pivoting my right foot, I snapped my left leg, aiming my heel at her midsection. The center judge raised one finger.

There was no time to celebrate, not in the traditional sense at least. Master Pollard gave a brief command greeted with a unanimous “Yes, sir” and the thud of 20 hands dropping-down-and-giving-him-30, while the “winners” celebrated their victory with laps as usual.

Three years ago, seven-thirty in the evening meant I was a warrior. It meant standing up straighter, pushing a little harder, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am”, celebrating birthdays by breaking boards, never pointing your toes, and familiarity. Three years later, seven-thirty in the morning meant I was nervous.

The room is uncomfortably large. The sprung floor soaks up the checkerboard of sunlight piercing through the colonial windows. The mirrored walls further illuminate the studio and I feel the light scrutinizing my sorry attempts at a pas de bourrée, while capturing the organic fluidity of the dancers around me. “Chassé en croix, grand battement, pique, pirouette.” I follow the graceful limbs of the woman in front of me, her legs floating ribbons, as she executes what seems to be a perfect ronds de jambes. Each movement remains a negotiation. With admirable patience, Ms. Tan casts me a sympathetic glance.

There is no time to wallow in the misery that is my right foot. Taekwondo calls for dorsiflexion; pointed toes are synonymous with broken toes. My thoughts drag me into a flashback of the usual response to this painful mistake: “You might as well grab a tutu and head to the ballet studio next door.” Well, here I am Master Pollard, unfortunately still following your orders to never point my toes, but no longer feeling the satisfaction that comes with being a third degree black belt with 5 years of experience quite literally under her belt. It’s like being a white belt again — just in a leotard and ballet slippers.

But the appetite for new beginnings that brought me here doesn’t falter. It is only reinforced by the classical rendition of “Dancing Queen” that floods the room and the ghost of familiarity that reassures me that this new beginning does not and will not erase the past. After years spent at the top, it’s hard to start over. But surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become. In Taekwondo, we started each class reciting the tenets: honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.

The thing about change is that it eventually stops making things so different. After nine different schools, four different countries, three different continents, fluency in Tamil, Norwegian, and English, there are more blurred lines than there are clear fragments. My life has not been a tactfully executed, gold medal-worthy Taekwondo form with each movement defined, nor has it been a series of frappés performed by a prima ballerina with each extension identical and precise, but thankfully it has been like the dynamics of a spinning back kick, fluid, and like my chances of landing a pirouette, unpredictable.

Why it works:

What’s especially powerful about this essay is that the author uses detailed imagery to convey a picture of what they’re experiencing, so much so that the reader is along for the ride. This works as a sports essay not only because of the language and sensory details, but also because the writer focuses on a specific moment in time, while at the same time exploring why Taekwondo is such an important part of their life.

After the emotional image is created, the student finishes their essay with valuable reflection. With the reflection, they show admissions officers that they are mature and self-aware. Self-awareness comes through with statements like “surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become” and maturity can be seen through the student’s discussion of values “honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.” These are the kinds of comments that should find their way into a sports essay!

essay about play football

“Advanced females ages 13 to 14 please proceed to staging with your coaches at this time.” Skittering around the room, eyes wide and pleading, I frantically explained my situation to nearby coaches. The seconds ticked away in my head; every polite refusal increased my desperation.

Despair weighed me down. I sank to my knees as a stream of competitors, coaches, and officials flowed around me. My dojang had no coach, and the tournament rules prohibited me from competing without one.

Although I wanted to remain strong, doubts began to cloud my mind. I could not help wondering: what was the point of perfecting my skills if I would never even compete? The other members of my team, who had found coaches minutes earlier, attempted to comfort me, but I barely heard their words. They couldn’t understand my despair at being left on the outside, and I never wanted them to understand.

Since my first lesson 12 years ago, the members of my dojang have become family. I have watched them grow up, finding my own happiness in theirs. Together, we have honed our kicks, blocks, and strikes. We have pushed one another to aim higher and become better martial artists. Although my dojang had searched for a reliable coach for years, we had not found one. When we attended competitions in the past, my teammates and I had always gotten lucky and found a sympathetic coach. Now, I knew this practice was unsustainable. It would devastate me to see the other members of my dojang in my situation, unable to compete and losing hope as a result. My dojang needed a coach, and I decided it was up to me to find one.

I first approached the adults in the dojang – both instructors and members’ parents. However, these attempts only reacquainted me with polite refusals. Everyone I asked told me they couldn’t devote multiple weekends per year to competitions. I soon realized that I would have become the coach myself.

At first, the inner workings of tournaments were a mystery to me. To prepare myself for success as a coach, I spent the next year as an official and took coaching classes on the side. I learned everything from motivational strategies to technical, behind-the-scenes components of Taekwondo competitions. Though I emerged with new knowledge and confidence in my capabilities, others did not share this faith.

Parents threw me disbelieving looks when they learned that their children’s coach was only a child herself. My self-confidence was my armor, deflecting their surly glances. Every armor is penetrable, however, and as the relentless barrage of doubts pounded my resilience, it began to wear down. I grew unsure of my own abilities.

Despite the attack, I refused to give up. When I saw the shining eyes of the youngest students preparing for their first competition, I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was. The knowledge that I could solve my dojang’s longtime problem motivated me to overcome my apprehension.

Now that my dojang flourishes at competitions, the attacks on me have weakened, but not ended. I may never win the approval of every parent; at times, I am still tormented by doubts, but I find solace in the fact that members of my dojang now only worry about competing to the best of their abilities.

Now, as I arrive at a tournament with my students, I close my eyes and remember the past. I visualize the frantic search for a coach and the chaos amongst my teammates as we compete with one another to find coaches before the staging calls for our respective divisions. I open my eyes to the exact opposite scene. Lacking a coach hurt my ability to compete, but I am proud to know that no member of my dojang will have to face that problem again.

In the beginning, you might think this is another cliche sports essay about overcoming adversity. But instead, it becomes a unique statement and coming-of-age tale that reads as a suspenseful narrative.

The author connects their experience with martial arts to larger themes in their life but manages to do so without riffing off of tried-and-true themes. Through statements like “I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was” we learn about the students values and their desire to be there for those who depend on them.

The student also brings it full circle, demonstrating their true transformation. By using the “Same, but Different” ending technique , the student places themself in the same environment that we saw in the intro, but experiences it differently due to their actions throughout the narrative. This is very compelling!

“1…2…3…4 pirouettes! New record!” My friends cheered as I landed my turns. Pleased with my progress, I gazed down at my worn-out pointe shoes. The sweltering blisters, numbing ice-baths, and draining late-night practices did not seem so bad after all. Next goal: five turns.

For as long as I can remember, ballet, in all its finesse and glamor, had kept me driven day to day. As a child, the lithe ballerinas, donning ethereal costumes as they floated across the stage, were my motivation. While others admired Messi and Adele, I idolized Carlos Acosta, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet.

As I devoted more time and energy towards my craft, I became obsessed with improving my technique. I would stretch for hours after class, forcing my leg one inch higher in an effort to mirror the Dance Magazine cover girls. I injured my feet and ruined pair after pair of pointe shoes, turning on wood, cement, and even grass to improve my balance as I spun. At competitions, the dancers with the 180-degree leg extensions, endless turns, and soaring leaps—the ones who received “Bravos!” from the roaring audience—further pushed me to refine my skills and perfect my form. I believed that, with enough determination, I would one day attain their level of perfection. Reaching the quadruple-pirouette milestone only intensified my desire to accomplish even more.

My efforts seemed to have come to fruition two summers ago when I was accepted to dance with Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet at their renowned New York City summer intensive. I walked into my first session eager to learn from distinguished ballet masters and worldly dancers, already anticipating my improvement. Yet, as I danced alongside the accomplished ballerinas, I felt out of place. Despite their clean technique and professional training, they did not aim for glorious leg extensions or prodigious leaps. When they performed their turn combinations, most of them only executed two turns as I attempted four.

“Dancers, double-pirouettes only.”

Taken aback and confused, I wondered why our teacher expected so little from us. The other ballerinas seemed content, gracing the studio with their simple movements.

As I grew closer with my Moscow roommates, I gradually learned that their training emphasized the history of the art form instead of stylistic tricks. Rather than show off their physical ability, their performances aimed to convey a story, one that embodied the rich culture of ballet and captured both the legacy of the dancers before them and their own artistry. As I observed my friends more intently in repertoire class, I felt the pain of the grief-stricken white swan from Swan Lake, the sass of the flirtatious Kitri from Don Quijote, and I gradually saw what I had overlooked before. My definition of talent had been molded by crowd-pleasing elements—whirring pirouettes, gravity-defying leaps, and mind-blowing leg extensions. This mindset slowly stripped me from the roots of my passion and my personal connection with ballet.

With the Bolshoi, I learned to step back and explore the meaning behind each step and the people behind the scenes. Ballet carries history in its movements, from the societal values of the era to each choreographer’s unique flair. As I uncovered the messages behind each pirouette, kick, and jump, my appreciation for ballet grew beyond my obsession with raw athleticism and developed into a love for the art form’s emotive abilities in bridging the dancers with the audience. My journey as an artist has allowed me to see how technical execution is only the means to a greater understanding between dancer and spectator, between storyteller and listener. The elegance and complexity of ballet does not revolve around astonishing stunts but rather the evocative strength and artistry manifested in the dancer, in me. It is the combination of sentiments, history, tradition, and passion that has allowed ballet and its lessons of human connection to become my lifestyle both on and off stage.

This essay is about lessons. While the author is a dancer, this narrative isn’t really about ballet, per se — it’s about the author’s personal growth. It is purposefully reflective as the student shows a nice character arc that begins with an eager young ballerina and ends with a reflection on their past. The primary strength of this essay is the honesty and authenticity that the student approaches it with.

In the end, the student turns a cliche on its head as they embrace the idea of overcoming adversity and demonstrate how the adversity, in this case, was their own stereotypes about their art. It’s beautiful!

“Getting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing.” Coach Rob Stark’s motto never fails to remind me of his encouragement on early-morning bus rides to track meets around the state. I’ve always appreciated the phrase, but an experience last June helped me understand its more profound, universal meaning.

Stark, as we affectionately call him, has coached track at my high school for 25 years. His care, dedication, and emphasis on developing good character has left an enduring impact on me and hundreds of other students. Not only did he help me discover my talent and love for running, but he also taught me the importance of commitment and discipline and to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running. When I learned a neighboring high school had dedicated their track to a longtime coach, I felt that Stark deserved similar honors.

Our school district’s board of education indicated they would only dedicate our track to Stark if I could demonstrate that he was extraordinary. I took charge and mobilized my teammates to distribute petitions, reach out to alumni, and compile statistics on the many team and individual champions Stark had coached over the years. We received astounding support, collecting almost 3,000 signatures and pages of endorsements from across the community. With help from my teammates, I presented this evidence to the board.

They didn’t bite.

Most members argued that dedicating the track was a low priority. Knowing that we had to act quickly to convince them of its importance, I called a team meeting where we drafted a rebuttal for the next board meeting. To my surprise, they chose me to deliver it. I was far from the best public speaker in the group, and I felt nervous about going before the unsympathetic board again. However, at that second meeting, I discovered that I enjoy articulating and arguing for something that I’m passionate about.

Public speaking resembles a cross country race. Walking to the starting line, you have to trust your training and quell your last minute doubts. When the gun fires, you can’t think too hard about anything; your performance has to be instinctual, natural, even relaxed. At the next board meeting, the podium was my starting line. As I walked up to it, familiar butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Instead of the track stretching out in front of me, I faced the vast audience of teachers, board members, and my teammates. I felt my adrenaline build, and reassured myself: I’ve put in the work, my argument is powerful and sound. As the board president told me to introduce myself, I heard, “runners set” in the back of my mind. She finished speaking, and Bang! The brief silence was the gunshot for me to begin.

The next few minutes blurred together, but when the dust settled, I knew from the board members’ expressions and the audience’s thunderous approval that I had run quite a race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough; the board voted down our proposal. I was disappointed, but proud of myself, my team, and our collaboration off the track. We stood up for a cause we believed in, and I overcame my worries about being a leader. Although I discovered that changing the status quo through an elected body can be a painstakingly difficult process and requires perseverance, I learned that I enjoy the challenges this effort offers. Last month, one of the school board members joked that I had become a “regular” – I now often show up to meetings to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment for athletes.

Just as Stark taught me, I worked passionately to achieve my goal. I may have been beaten when I appealed to the board, but I certainly didn’t lose, and that would have made Stark proud.

This essay uses the idea of sports to explore a more profound topic—growing through relationships. They really embrace using sports as an avenue to tell the reader about a specific experience that changed the way they approach the world.

The emphasis on relationships is why this essay works well and doesn’t fall into a cliche. The narrator grows not because of their experience with track but because of their relationship with their coach, who inspired them to evolve and become a leader.

Soccer (known as football outside of the US) is an action-packed team sport with simple rules and minimal equipment—no wonder it's the most popular sport in the world! [1] X Research source Ready to get out there and start playing? Read on to learn the basic skills you'll need to get started and get a grip on the basic rules of the game, then you'll be ready to find a team or rally some friends for a pickup game of your own. Before you know it, you might be the cause of someone shouting, "Goooooooooaaaaaal!"

Things You Should Know

  • Win the game by scoring more goals than the other team.
  • Use different parts of your foot to change the angle, arc, and direction of the ball as you move across the field.
  • Defend by closing off space around the ball to deny the opposing team opportunities to advance the ball or score.
  • Start playing in casual pickup games, then transition to a recreational league for a more competitive experience.
  • Play a clean game. If playing clean means that you have to lose and not injure anyone, then let it be so. Better to lose a game than to lose a person!

Basic Skills

Step 1 Kick the ball with the instep of your foot to pass it.

  • Another passing technique is the "push pass," where you shove the ball with the inside of your foot. It's more accurate but less powerful—usually used for short passes across the grass to a nearby teammate.

Step 2 Tap the ball...

  • In a match situation, you need to be able to quickly pull the ball in close to you if your progress is challenged by a defender so you can change directions or pass.
  • Make sure you're always controlling the ball and the pace. Don't kick the ball harder than you can run and it won't get away from you. Over time, you'll get a sense of how hard you need to kick the ball depending on how fast you're moving.
  • It can take a little practice to get the hang of this skill, but once you find your rhythm there will be no stopping you!

Expert Trick: When you're practicing dribbling the ball in soccer, set up two small goals facing each other. Then, as you're kicking the ball, have someone else try to get the ball away from you. That way, you'll have practice changing directions, and you'll have to come up with solutions on how to find the open goal.

Step 3 Hit the ball with the top of your foot to shoot.

  • Practice this skill with shooting drills where you aim at a specific corner of the goal with each shot. Ramp it up by getting a buddy to play defender and try to block you.

Step 4 Angle your hips...

  • Shoot at an empty goal to improve your aim.
  • Shoot at a goal with a goalkeeper to master shot selection.
  • Shoot with a defender and a goalkeeper to improve your timing and ability to shoot on the run.

Step 5 Tap the ball to stop and control it in the air or on the ground.

  • For example, if the ball is coming across the grass, a quick, short drop of the instep of your foot will bring the ball to a complete stop.
  • Practice this skill by getting a friend to throw the ball at you (not to you), or kick the ball against a wall and stop the rebound.
  • Juggling is another good way to build your ball control skills. It also helps you get used to using different parts of your body to stop the ball.

Step 6 Defend...

  • Always keep your body between the ball and the goal. This helps eliminate scoring opportunities.
  • Because the positions in soccer are so fluid, most players will be playing defense whenever the opposing team has the ball. This is a skill for all players, not just defenders.

Step 7 Pay attention to where all players are on the field at all times.

  • Watching pro matches can also help you build this skill mentally. Pay attention to where all the players are on the field and focus on how players choose their passes and shots.
  • Advanced players often already know who they're going to pass the ball to before the ball even comes to them—this is the level of awareness you want to strive to reach.

Step 8 Run when you're...

  • Playing in small groups and doing soccer-specific drills, such as dribbling practice, can also help improve your cardiovascular endurance. [10] X Research source

Basic Rules

Step 1 Suit up with...

  • In a casual pickup game, you don't necessarily need shin guards or cleats (although you're very likely to end up with some bruises on your shins). This minimalism of equipment is part of why soccer is so popular around the world.

Step 2 Start the game with 11 players on the field for each team.

  • In a competitive match, you can have up to 7 substitute players on the bench (usually including 1 goalkeeper), but each team is only allowed to make 5 substitutions per match, regardless of injuries except in cases of concussions. Then you are allowed to make at most 2 concussion substitutions. This is where the minimum number might come into play.

Step 3 Kick off from the center of the field to start each half.

  • During the match, you'll return to the center circle for a kickoff every time a goal is scored. The team that got scored on is the one that kicks.

Step 4 Use your feet, legs, and torso to control and advance the ball.

  • If you're the goalkeeper, you're allowed to use your hands—but only when you're in the penalty box in front of the goal. That's part of the field where goalkeepers typically stay anyway, but watch the lines if you're diving for a ball.
  • This rule doesn't apply to incidental touching. If another player kicks the ball and it bounces off of your arm, you're all good—as long as you didn't move your arm in an attempt to control the direction of the ball.

Step 5 Go after the ball, not the other player, to avoid fouls.

  • For example, if you're defending, you might slide to kick the ball away from an opposing player. If they happened to trip, that wouldn't be your fault. But if you tried to trip them by kicking their leg, that would be a foul.
  • In a competitive match, it's up to the referee to determine if contact was incidental or intentional and issue penalties accordingly.
  • Competitive soccer referees issue yellow cards or red cards depending on the number of fouls the player has or the severity of the violation. A red card means the player must leave the field, so their team will be at least one player short for the rest of the match. [16] X Research source

Step 6 Play for a total of 90 minutes.

  • In a casual pickup game, you can set your time however you want, but it's usually a good idea to plan it out ahead of time with a break at the half.
  • Even in competitive matches, the total play time may vary depending on the age of the players. For example, younger kids tend to play shorter matches.

Step 7 Throw the ball...

  • Time doesn't stop when the ball goes out of bounds, so players quickly decide who should throw it in. Usually, it gets thrown in by whoever happens to be closest.

Step 8 Set up a corner kick or a goal kick if the ball goes over the goal line.

  • Corner kicks are infamous "set pieces." Teams have plays already set up that are designed to score a goal. If you're making a corner kick in a competitive match, you'll put one of these plays into motion.
  • While any player can make a goal kick, it's usually the goalkeeper who does it—and they're usually going to kick the ball way over to the other side of the field.

Step 9 Score more goals than your opponent to win the match.

  • If the match ends in a tie, that's often how it ends. In tournament play where there has to be a winner to move on to the next round, a tied match is resolved with penalty kicks, an overtime period, or both. The specific rules depend on the tournament.

Positions and Specialized Skills

Step 1 Choose a position that best suits your strengths and abilities.

  • Goalkeeper: You would do anything to keep that ball from going in your goal . You're focused and alert and have a sixth sense of where the ball is going to go.
  • Defender (back): You're strong, stubborn, and maybe a little aggressive. You're good at passing as well as clearing the ball away from the goal and out of danger. You prefer a supporting role to the spotlight.
  • Midfielder: You're fast and have good cardiovascular fitness. You have a mind for strategy and know how to see the whole field and make plays. You have a decent shot and a better pass.
  • Forward (striker): You're the star of the show, the one responsible for shooting goals. You have a strong, accurate shot and stay mentally focused. You're also comfortable in a leadership position.

Step 2 Practice passing and shooting with your non-dominant foot.

  • If you're not sure which foot is your dominant foot, try this little trick: have a friend stand behind you and lightly shove you forward. Whichever foot you step forward on is your dominant foot.
  • Typically, you'll be playing on the side of the field that matches your dominant foot—but not always. For example, if you have a more powerful left foot, you might end up as a left-wing (midfielder) or left forward.

Step 3 Kick with the outside of your foot to put a backward spin on the ball.

  • This technique comes in handy in passing situations and can help you move the ball to a teammate the opposing team left open.

Step 4 Use your heel to pass the ball to a teammate.

  • There are other variations of this kick, such as crossing your kicking leg over your standing leg or kicking the ball up in the air with your heel, that require a lot more training and flexibility.
  • If you're good at juggling, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to master kicking with your heel.

Step 5 Run to create attacking opportunities when you don't have the ball.

  • Look for an open space on the field and bolt in that direction—it spreads everyone out and gives your team more options to work with.
  • A well-timed sprint across the pitch can also serve as a distraction that might take your opponents' eyes off the ball for a brief second—which is sometimes all the time you need to make something happen.

Step 6 Head the ball by hitting it with your forehead.

  • Heading is a particularly good skill to use as a defender to clear the ball away from the goal after a corner kick. You might also head the ball as an offensive player to pass it to a teammate.
  • Many people are anxious about heading the ball because of the concussion risk—but as long as you use the correct technique, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. At the same time, if you don't feel comfortable with this skill, just don't do it.
  • This is an advanced skill typically not taught to younger players. Many leagues ban heading for players under 11 years old.

Step 7 Develop your style based on your skills as a player.

  • Over time, you'll get a strong sense of your strengths and weaknesses. Work on tricks and unexpected moves to get the most out of your strengths.
  • Juggling and playing around with the ball can help you come up with creative ways to move and kick. Anything unexpected will give you a leg up (no pun intended!) in match play.

Lionel Messi

Practice as much as you can, and push your boundaries to keep improving. "I’m never satisfied. I always push my limits and try to get better every day."

Finding a Team

Step 1 Get friends and family together to play a pickup game.

  • You do want an even number of players per side, but you can play casual pickup games with anywhere from 2 to 11 players on each team.
  • The more people you have playing, the larger the space you'll need to play.

Step 2 Set up a...

  • If you don't know enough people, you might post flyers on a community bulletin board or post about the game you want to start on social media to try to find players.

Step 3 Start competitive play on a local recreational team.

  • Rec league teams often don't have coaches and might not even have standard practices—it just depends on how well-organized the team is.
  • Players on rec leagues come from all skill levels. Chances are, you'll have at least a player or two on your team who plays or used to play for their school—you can learn a lot from them.

Step 4 Try out...

  • Even if you don't make the team, you'll pick up some skills during tryouts that you can practice in the hopes of making the team next year.
  • Show enthusiasm for the sport and a willingness to learn—that's an attitude that will impress the coach, regardless of your skill level.

Step 5 Sign up for a summer camp to hone your skills.

  • Most soccer camps have scholarships available for players who might not otherwise be able to afford the camp fees.
  • Professional soccer teams often run skills camps as well. Some of these are by invitation only, while others are open to anyone who pays the program fee or qualifies for a scholarship.

Step 6 Look at traveling teams once you're playing at an advanced level.

  • Starting relatively young is usually the best way to ensure you have the skills to play at an advanced level. But even if you're already in your teens, it's not too late! With focus and dedication to the sport, you'll notice consistent improvement.

Tips from our Readers

  • Trick the opposite team by pretending you are going to kick the ball to someone. Then, when you kick, kick it to a different person or at an available angle to shoot a goal.
  • Try to stay on the good side of the referee. There is no use arguing with him after you get a yellow/red card/foul. His decision is final.
  • Don't wait for the ball to come to you. Go to the ball. If you hesitate, the other team will take advantage of you.
  • If you try to hit the ball with your head, make sure it hits the middle of your forehead and not the sides.
  • Hit the ball with the extreme outside of your foot to curve your kick.
  • Always warm up your muscles before you start playing to prevent cramps and other injuries. [32] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

About This Article

Walter Merino

To play soccer, first, you'll need two teams. The goal of the game is to score more points than the other team by kicking the ball into their net. In the official rules, each team has 11 players and the game lasts for 90 minutes. To get started, assign positions to every player. Each team should have a goalie, defenders, midfielders, and strikers. If you're the goalie, your job is to stop the other team from scoring by blocking the ball from going into the net, and you are the only player on the field that can use your hands to do so. If you're a defender, you'll support the goalie by preventing the other team from taking on shots on goal. Additionally, try to steal the ball from the opposing team and pass it to your midfielders or strikers. When you're a midfielder, you want to get the ball toward the other team's net. You'll run up and down the field, helping on defense and on offense to get the ball to your strikers. Then, if you're a striker, it's your job to shoot the ball into the other team's net to score a point. When you're not playing a game, practice dribbling the ball down the field while running at different speeds, which will help you keep the ball in your team's possession during an actual game. You should also practice taking shots using a net or some cones so you're more ready to score the next time you play. Additionally, try asking a friend to practice with you so you can work on passing the ball back and forth. Where is the toughest place to play in EA Sports College Football 25 ?

One of the unique features of college football video games has been the home field advantage factor, where teams known to have raucous crowds made it hard for visiting teams to decide plays, call audibles or make critical mistakes. The feature will return when EA Sports College Football 25 releases in July , giving college football fans another chance to see where the most hostile crowds are, and on Tuesday, EA Sports announced where the most electric stadiums rank.

EA Sports says stats such as home winning percentage, home game attendance, active home winning streaks and team prestige, among other factors.

Five wisconsin football freshmen who could play early in 2024, share this article.

The calendar has flipped to July, which means another step closer to kickoff of the 2024 college football season.

That season will be an interesting one to monitor from a Wisconsin perspective. The Badgers received another influx of talent this offseason as head coach Luke Fickell enters his second year in charge. While the team should be improved after a disappointing 7-6 2023 season, its record may finish in a similar position against one of the nation’s toughest schedules .

Related:   Ranking the Big Ten’s most impactful transfer portal additions entering 2024 football season

One source of that influx of talent is the program’s record-breaking class of 2024 . The group finished the cycle ranked No. 24 in the nation and importantly with a first-ever Blue-Chip Ratio of 50%.

College football is still a veteran-driven sport where few true freshmen see the field. But it is important to consider that Fickell is still in the process of turning over the roster and implementing his system and culture. That should lead to more of his commits seeing the field earlier, especially at some of the shallower positions on the roster.

Here are five of those freshmen from Wisconsin’s class of 2024 who could see the field early in 2024:

OT Kevin Heywood

Recruiting Ranking: Four-star, No. 50 in class of 2024, No. 4 offensive tackle, No. 1 player from Pennsylvania

Heywood is reportedly already contending for the backup left tackle job behind starter Jack Nelson. His only path to playing time is an injury to Nelson or right tackle Riley Mahlman, but one injury away in football isn’t a long way to go.

The top-ranked tackle already winning a spot on the two-deep speaks to his talent level and sky-high potential. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he sees the field this season.

LB Thomas Heiberger

Recruiting Ranking: Four-star, No. 462 in class of 2024, No. 40 linebacker, No. 1 player from South Dakota

Heiberger is another player who has reportedly already made a significant impression on the Wisconsin staff. He was one of the more underrated commits of the 2024 cycle, especially coming from South Dakota — a seldom-recruited state.

The four-star linebacker should see day one snaps on special teams in 2024 and could work his way into the two-deep as soon as 2025.

DL Ernest Willor Jr.

Recruiting Ranking: Four-star, No. 173 in class of 2024, No. 26 defensive lineman, No. 7 player from Maryland

Willor is on this list due to his talent level and recruiting ranking, but also due to Wisconsin’s razor-thin depth chart at defensive line.

The Badgers enter the season with a defensive line group of James Thompson Jr., Elijah Hills (transfer), Brandon Lane (transfer), Ben Barten, Curt Neal and Cade McDonald. Thompson Jr. is the one guaranteed star. But past him, there are more questions than answers.

That means an injury or two to the top of the room could see Wisconsin’s young talent see the field. That wouldn’t mean great things for the team’s chances, but it could see Willor Jr. and others rise into a role.

DL Dillan Johnson

Recruiting Ranking: Four-star, No. 470 in class of 2024, No. 53 defensive lineman, No. 13 player from Illinois

The same thoughts apply to Johnson. He and Willor Jr. are Wisconsin’s highest-ranked defensive linemen in the class and should anchor the position in the years to come. But given the position’s current standing, a few injuries could vault both of them onto the field.

TE Grant Stec

Recruiting Ranking: Four-star, No. 291 in class of 2024, No. 19 tight end, No. 7 player from Illinois

Stec was one of Fickell’s signature additions to the class of 2024. He profiles as a top-end receiving threat in Phil Longo’s air raid offense and could begin to fulfill that potential immediately.

Wisconsin is thin at tight end as the staff works to re-shape the roster. The veterans at the position used to fit with the program’s old offensive system. Longo’s offense requiring a different skillset at the position will first lead to more snaps for the wide receiving corps in 2024, but it also could lead to Stec quickly rising up the depth chart.

England celebrate beating Slovakia at Euro 2024

England survived a huge scare at Euro 2024 as they needed extra time to scrape past Slovakia in their last-16 tie.

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane scored to become the Three Lions’ last-gasp heroes, but huge concerns remain after another disjointed display from Gareth Southgate’s side .

England were deservedly behind after another poor first-half performance saw Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead in the 25th minute.

Phil Foden had the ball in the net early in the second half but his close-range effort was ruled out for offside. Kane then missed a good chance with a header before Declan Rice hit the post, and it looked as though England were heading for a shock exit.

That was until Bellingham popped up with an overhead kick in the fourth minute of injury time to salvage extra time. Kane then pounced in the first minute to head England in front and seal England’s 2-1 win and set up a quarter-final tie against Switzerland on July 6 .

This is how the drama unfolded…

Well that was equally exciting and exhausting. England at Euro 2024 has been quite a ride so far and the good news is it’s set to continue.

In the meantime, thanks for following our live blog and stick around for the latest reaction to the win over Slovakia.

And be sure to join us on Saturday when the Three Lions take on Switzerland…

Gareth Southgate admits he nearly made huge mistake

Gareth Southgate has revealed he very nearly subbed Jude Bellingham off before he had the chance to score his stunning equaliser.

No one would have blamed him given the midfielder’s sub par performance until then to be fair.

‘We were thinking should we take him off, but you know he is capable of those sorts of moments. With 15 minutes to go you wonder if he is out on his feet.’

After scoring the equaliser, Jude Bellingham shouted ‘who else’ to the England crowd.

‘Playing for England is an enjoyable feeling but it’s also a lot of pressure, you hear people talk a lot of rubbish,’ the Three Lions hero explained.

‘It’s nice that when you deliver you can give them a little bit back.’

England v Slovakia: Round of 16 - UEFA EURO 2024

The England manager tells BBC Sport: ‘I’m so proud of the players and the spirit the lads showed.

‘Everybody we put into the game played a part and helped us get over the line. They are all pushing and helping each other and tonight, that made the difference.

‘Under that pressure they kept probing. In the end it is the old fashioned long throw that gets the goal, those moments can happen when you keep wearing a team down.’

‘I know what I can deliver in those moments,’ Jude Bellingham tells ITV.

Regardless of what people say, I’ve done it this year for Madrid, I’ve done it for England before. Just happy to help the team.

‘A good win, through to the next round. Very happy. It’s been tough the last week or so to keep the negative energy out of the camp.

‘I think today they will have been ready for us. We showed the character that England’s missed. It’s very important to get through.’

Bizaree moment as two balls are on the pitch which should see the game stops. The referee waves a quick play-on when one is cleared and Slovakia fire a shot into the side netting.

Controversial if they had scored.

This is Ivan Toney’s first appearance at a major tournament and he’s loving it.

Great centre-forward play as he wins a free-kick in the centre of the pitch.

113: England 2-1 Slovakia

More set-piece trouble as England repeatedly fail to clear the ball. Thankfully, Slovakia’s final cross evades everyone and goes wide.

110: England 2-1 Slovakia

England still living dangerously. Gallagher gives away a free-kick which Tupta takes but it’s over the bar.

Slovakia have rolled their dice. Right-back Pekarík is off and striker Tupta is on.

England subs – Gallagher and Konsa for Kane and Bellingham

Bold? Risky? Smart?

England’s goalscorers are off with defender Konsa on and filling in at left-back, while Gallagher should provide some energy in midfield.

Ben Hill Griffin Stadium has been the home of the Gators since its opening back in 1930 and boasts a capacity of more than 88,500 fans. Its record crowd dates from 2015, when Florida hosted rival Florida State before 90,916 faithful.

9. Florida State

Doak Campbell Stadium bears the name of the former FSU president with a capacity of 79,560, the 49th-largest stadium in the world and the 15th-biggest in college football. The Seminoles played to a record 84,431 fans when they hosted Notre Dame in a 2014 loss.

8. Oklahoma

essay about play football

Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium has been the home of the Sooners since 1923, celebrating its 100th birthday last football season. The stadium boasts a capacity 86,112, ranking No. 22 in the world and No. 13 in college football. OU's record capacity is 88,388 in 2017 against TCU.

7. Wisconsin

essay about play football

Sitting on the ground of Camp Randall, a Civil War-era training camp, the Badgers have played on the site since 1895 and the first stadium went up in 1917, making it the oldest in the Big Ten. Wisconsin set a record with 83,184 fans for the Iowa game in 2005, and the sight of fans dancing in the stadium as part of their "Jump Around" tradition has been one of college football's most recognizable Saturday features since the 1990s.

6. Penn State

essay about play football

Built in 1959, Beaver Stadium remains one of college football's loudest and most raucous environments. Penn State boasts a capacity of 106,572 seats, making it the second-largest stadium in college football, and the fourth-largest venue on Earth. Home to one of the nation's most vocal student sections, the famous "White Out" game at Happy Valley is one of the toughest on any schedule.

essay about play football

Sanford Stadium has played host to a pair of national champion teams in the last three seasons, the vaunted home field of budding dynasty Georgia. The stadium seats 92,746 fans, making it the ninth biggest college football venue and the 17th-largest in the world. Its first game was a defeat of Yale in 1929, widely regarded as a key moment when Southern football went national by beating a favored Northeastern school. Georgia is 22-0 at Sanford since 2020.

4. Ohio State

essay about play football

Breaking ground in 1921 and opening in 1922, Ohio Stadium, also known as The Horseshoe, has an official capacity of 102,780 seats, making it the third largest stadium in college football. But the Buckeye faithful set a record of 110,045 in 2016 against -- who else? -- arch-rival Michigan, a three-point double-overtime victory for Ohio State. The scarlet and gray are 22-2 at home since the 2020 season.

essay about play football

Ask most college football fans inside the SEC, and out, and they'll tell you maybe no other place in the country is as raw and loud as Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night. Death Valley seats 102,321 fans, making it the fifth-biggest in college ball and the seventh-largest in the world. One of the most famous matchups on the site was the "Earthquake Game" in 1988, when a late touchdown to beat Auburn caused a crowd reaction so intense that it registered as an earthquake on a local seismograph.

essay about play football

Boasting an .827 win percentage for the home team since opening in 1929, Bryant-Denny Stadium is indeed one of college football's most formidable venues. With a seating capacity of 100,077 fans, the home of Alabama football is the eighth-largest in the country and the 10th-largest in the world, and was the first in the SEC to surpass 100,000 fans for a game. Bama is a dominant 25-1 in Titletown since the 2020 season.

1. Texas A&M

essay about play football

Home of the 12th Man, Kyle Field currently holds the record as the largest football venue in the SEC with a capacity for 102,733 fans, making it also the fourth-biggest stadium in college football and in the country. Texas A&M set a record of 110,633 fans against Ole Miss in 2014, at that time the biggest attendance for an SEC game or any game in the state of Texas. Quite an achievement.

What is college football’s toughest stadium to play in? Bruce Feldman ranks LSU No. 1

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA - NOVEMBER 05: LSU fans storm the field to celebrate their win against the Alabama Crimson Tide at Tiger Stadium on November 05, 2022 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (Photo by Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images)

EA Sports stirred up a lot of debate when it unveiled its rankings of the toughest places to play for the upcoming College Football 25 video game. I have my own thoughts based on some 30 years of covering the sport in which I’ve attended games at and been on the sidelines for many of the most charged stadium atmospheres in the country.

The loudest and craziest venue I’ve been to is the old Orange Bowl. When there was a huge Miami game there — usually a Florida State visit — nothing was quite like it. The closest thing I’ve seen is LSU’s Tiger Stadium. My colleagues at The Athletic had their own thoughts on the EA Sports list, and now here’s my ranking of the 10 toughest places to play in college football.

College Football 25's Toughest Places to Play: Debating the rankings

1. LSU: Tiger Stadium

The place is just pure mayhem, and it starts way before kickoff. I’ve heard from so many coaches over the years about how hostile the treatment of their teams is, from rattling their bus on arrival to dousing the visitors with booze. Just seeing Mike the Tiger in person adds another layer of intimidation to this.

Mike Leach told me the story of the first time he went in there when he was the offensive coordinator at Kentucky.

“There were these little old ladies with their grandchildren flipping off our bus,” Leach said. “Then as we got closer, they start rocking our bus!”

Count Leach among those awed by Mike the Tiger — and the entire experience.

I remember being there in 2007 when Florida and Tim Tebow came into Death Valley on a Saturday night for a top-10 showdown. Les Miles went for it five times on fourth down and his team — and their faithful — had his back every step of the way for a come-from-behind 28-24 win. It was a record crowd at the time of 92,910. It sounded like twice as many people were packed in there at a stadium that now holds more than 100,000.

There was also the legendary Earthquake Game in 1988. Technically, there were fewer than 80,000 fans in there to see LSU upset Auburn , 7-6. But a seismograph registered an earthquake after Tommy Hodson connected on a fourth-down TD pass with less than two minutes to play.

I asked former LSU staffer and longtime Louisiana media member Derek Ponamsky about the loudest he’s ever heard the place for a game, and he said it was in 2019 when another Florida team, ranked No. 6, visited.

“That game was insane from the second we stepped off the bus,” he said. “Ja’Marr (Chase’s) TD and our stop on fourth down in the red zone was almost as good as the Earthquake Game or Rueben Randle’s catch and run in 2010 against Alabama . But that stadium was a jet engine for six hours. It was LOUD before they even took the field. ‘College Gameday’ on campus. It was electric.”

If you meet someone who has never been around college football but wants the full experience, there is only one place they need to go to get it on full blast: LSU’s Death Valley.

2. Alabama: Bryant-Denny Stadium

My favorite visit here was for the 2010 Iron Bowl — the Cam Newton game. There was a ton of drama surrounding Auburn and Newton that season based on the NCAA ’s investigation into his recruitment.

In the wake of this game, an Alabama staffer was let go because of their decision to play the Steve Miller Band song “Take the Money and Run” over the stadium sound system during warmups. It only added to the raucous energy in the building that day. The Tide jumped all over the Tigers early, going up 24-0, but Newton was Superman that season. He led Auburn to a 28-27 comeback win, snapping a 20-game home win streak for the Crimson Tide.

Bama also deserves a lot of credit for ratcheting up the stadium energy with the lights, audio and video boards they’ve added over the years . It can feel like a pretty mind-scrambling experience when they got rolling.

3. Penn State: Beaver Stadium

The Nittany Lions’ White Out games are deafening. Penn State usually saves it for the toughest matchup of the season, although with Fox’s recent “Big Noon” strategy factoring into Big Ten scheduling, sometimes it doesn’t end up that way .

The Nittany Lions have won six of their past seven prime-time White Outs, with six of those being against ranked opponents — including the 2016 win over No. 2 Ohio State . The lone defeat was against No. 4 Ohio State by one point, 27-26, in 2018. Last year, Penn State shut out No. 24 Iowa , 31-0.

But I can speak from experience that it’s not just the White Outs that make this place special. The atmosphere last November when No. 3 Michigan visited Happy Valley was the loudest noon kickoff game I can remember in the last decade — louder than any other “Big Noon” game I’ve been at — with almost 111,000 people in attendance. Michigan , which had the most experienced team in the country in 2023, did win that game, 24-15.

4. Ohio State: Ohio Stadium

The Buckeyes have been the Big Ten’s most dominant program for a long time now, so whoever shows up usually is facing a stacked team with a more talented roster. Still, the Horseshoe is a towering building that feels much different, and more intimidating, than the Big House at archrival Michigan. The crowd comes in ready to break its opponent early and seems shocked if there’s anything other than a dominant Buckeyes showing.

5. Virginia Tech: Lane Stadium*

The asterisk is here because I’m thinking of what this place has been in the past, not necessarily what it’s been in recent years. I get it. The results recently indicate otherwise. As colleague Pete Sampson noted, The Hokies are 2-10 at home against Top 25 teams in the past decade , but when the Hokies are playing well, this place is unique. I’ve been here for a few Hokies beatdowns of top-10 teams where the place rocks. It has some Tiger Stadium vibes to it, and there’s something special to it as well.

It only takes the first two seconds of “Enter Sandman” to play and I get goosebumps. It happens every time, even more than a decade later. It immediately takes me back to how Lane Stadium comes alive like no other venue, in a different way than Camp Randall Stadium and “Jump Around.” That’s frenzied; this is more ominous.

It also perfectly fit with their style of play. Based primarily on their vaunted special teams, but also their aggressive defense, the Hokies were college football’s preeminent sudden-change/quick-strike team. It often felt like they were one big swing away from turning the game around or blowing it open.

There was a decade-plus of Hokie magic from the late ’90s into the 2000s in the peak Frank Beamer days where Lane was a chamber of horrors. In 1999, Virginia Tech faced three Top 25 teams — Syracuse , Miami and Boston College — and outscored them by a combined 143-24 at home. In 2002, Tech smashed Nick Saban’s No. 14 LSU squad, 26-8. The next year, a top-10 Hokies team hammered No. 2 Miami, 31-7. In 2004, the Hokies beat No. 6 West Virginia . In 2005, they beat up on No. 15 Georgia Tech and No. 13 Boston College by a combined score of 81-17. In 2009, Lane Stadium hosted successive top-20 wins over Nebraska and Miami.

If Brent Pry can get the Hokies rolling again, Lane will become an opponent’s worst nightmare.

6. Florida: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium

In my experience, The Swamp isn’t quite in the category with LSU and Bama, but it is right there with Tennessee and Georgia when it comes to a big-time, true SEC heavyweight experiences. Being there in the ’90s in the Steve Spurrier days to see the Gators face FSU and Bobby Bowden was fantastic.

7. Tennessee: Neyland Stadium

In my first trip to Knoxville, I saw Tennessee play Georgia in the late ’90s. The Vols were really rolling back then, and I got to be on the field in the end zone behind the Dawgs’ offense when they were backed up inside their own 10. I couldn’t even hear the person next to me. It was a sea of orange, and it’s easy to see why so many Top 25 teams have got thumped there over the years when UT was riding high. Georgia was No. 13 that day and lost to the Vols, 38-13.

8. Oregon: Autzen Stadium

I remember one rival staffer telling me that they must pump in noise in practice the week before they face the Ducks . It doesn’t seem like a place that size — seating 54,000 — can be that loud. It just didn’t make sense to him. But in a matchup of top 10 teams, the Ducks pounded their visitors by almost three touchdowns.

Autzen Stadium is also a place where you can see almost every kind of weather imaginable in the same day. Oregon has been great there for a long time and has defeated 31 of its past 32 opponents at Autzen.

9. Georgia: Sanford Stadium

I remember seeing a good Boise State team come in there ranked No. 18 against No. 13 Georgia in 2005. The Broncos just came unglued and looked overwhelmed, losing 48-13. It was 38-0 before the Broncos settled down. Jared Zabransky, who was a really good QB for Boise State, had his first two passes intercepted and turned it over six times in the first half.

It doesn’t feel like it’s been any easier for visitors now that the Dawgs are even more talented. UGA has won 13 consecutive games against Top 25 opponents at Sanford Stadium.

10. Texas A&M: Kyle Field

I’ve been there when the press box shakes. Kyle Field is an awesome building that gets really, really loud, and opponents complain that their sidelines smell like horse manure. My first trip for a game was Johnny Manziel’s debut against Florida. He was dynamic. The building shook. A&M lost, though. That’s why Kyle Field is not higher on my list, even if it’s No. 1 in EA Sports’ rankings.

When A&M has been really good, the Aggies have still struggled at home more than they should. Manziel led them to a win at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2012, but the next year, as wild as it felt to be in Kyle Field for the rematch, A&M lost.
