The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the problem that it is not known how servant leaders describe the attributes and practices they have used to empower and support members’ organizational citizenship in a for-profit organization headquartered in the state of Missouri with global locations. The theoretical foundation for the study is the van Dierendonck servant leadership conceptional model. The study was guided by the overall research question of how servant leaders describe the attributes and practices they have used to empower and support workers’ organizational citizenship and three sub-questions (1) how they describe the strategies they used to provide direction and build community through interpersonal acceptance of others; (2) describe how they exhibit humility and authenticity; and (3) describe how they exhibit stewardship focused on working for the good of the whole. Thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke was used to code the 11 purposively selected individual sample interviews and the focus group data collected. Five themes that inform the research questions emerged from the data: (1) intentional concerns for members' well-being; (2) committed and transparent to the serving and growth of others; (3) personalized leadership skills; (4) connecting with others; and (5) building reliability that builds community. The two most significant findings supported by the emerging themes are the insights as to why Robert Greenleaf believed servant leadership mirrored the teachings of Jesus Christ and why it would benefit society at the time when he introduced the servant leader concept, and a model for how servant leadership is operationalized emerged.
