An Integrated Masters with a PhD (iPhD) is a four-year postgraduate level programme that combines a one-year Masters course with a three-year PhD course. They allow students to familiarise themselves with their chosen topic, research methods and academic writing techniques before embarking on their own independent research project. An Integrated Masters with a PhD is particularly popular with international students and students who initially lack specialised knowledge or research skills.
An Integrated Masters with PhD, also commonly referred to as either just an Integrated Masters degree or an Integrated PhD, offers a relatively new way to undertake postgraduate training. They maintain the depth and focus of a conventional PhD but offer a more comprehensive doctoral training experience.
Due to their growing popularity, both the number of universities offering these newer forms of PhD and the number of students applying to them has steadily increased.
This page describes what Integrated Masters with PhDs are, who they are for, their advantages and disadvantages, how they differ from conventional PhDs and how they are structured in terms of programme, eligibility and costs. This page is for you if you are considering applying for an integrated course, or simply want to know more about them.
An Integrated PhD is a four-year postgraduate programme. They involve undertaking a one-year Masters degree (MRes or MSc) in your first year, followed by a three-year PhD programme in your second to fourth year. Although the courses run back-to-back, a student can only progress to the second year if they show satisfactory performance in their first year. The one-year Masters and the three-year PhD are considered separately in terms of qualifications; therefore, a student who completes an Integrated PhD will receive both a Masters degree (MRes or MSc) and a PhD as opposed to a single postgraduate qualification.
The aim of an Integrated PhD is to provide a structured approach to doctoral studies, combining advanced PhD research with formal teaching in relevant subjects, research methods and communication skills.
As Integrated PhDs are relatively new compared to more regular doctoral pathways such as stand-alone or MPhil-upgraded PhDs, some professors informally refer to them as ‘New Route PhDs’.
The most significant difference between an Integrated PhD and a regular PhD is the addition of the one-year Masters degree at the beginning of the programme. This results in an Integrated PhD typically lasting four years, as opposed to the three years as with regular PhDs.
Integrated PhDs are structured in such a way that they provide students with a broader range of foundational skills than a regular PhD. The first year introduces you to a combination of taught elements, practical experience and advanced research skills. In a regular PhD this mode of teaching is missing as it is assumed you already have this level of knowledge.
The last significant difference between the two types of doctoral programmes is the ‘group’ aspect associated with the Integrated version. Since the Masters programme also includes other students enrolled in Integrated PhDs, you will have a small cohort with whom you will work closely alongside during your studies.
Integrated PhDs can be an effective pathway for any student, but they stand out in two situations:
Scenario 1: International Students
The Higher Education system differs across countries , although not by a large amount, enough to where an unfamiliar student may struggle, especially when working independently. An Integrated PhD allows you to adapt to the UK education system by offering a more guided and hands-on approach to your learning and research process before you embark on your three-year research project.
It also has visa benefits. If an international student seeking a Masters degree in the UK already knows they want to follow it up with a PhD, enrolling in an Integrated PhD will save them from having to leave the country and re-apply for a visa after completing their initial postgraduate degree.
Scenario 2: Lack of undergraduate research experience or a relevant Masters degree
An Integrated PhD is useful for students who have academic abilities but lack the necessary background to be considered for a standard-route PhD. This usually occurs under one of three scenarios:
The advantages of an Integrated PhD are strongly linked to the international and inexperienced students they cater for. They offer students an effective means of gaining more confidence, knowledge and research skills in their field before starting a doctorate, and also provide visa benefits to international students who will be undertaking prior postgraduate study.
Integrated PhDs also enable students the possibility of receiving funding for the Masters phase of their programme, as will be explained in more detail in the ‘Funding Opportunities’ section.
Integrated doctorates have no obvious disadvantages, but are generally not suitable for those who already have a Masters degree or well-developed research skills in their chosen field. For these students, the additional costs and duration of an Integrated PhD can be avoided by opting for a traditional PhD for which they will already be suited for.

The programme of study is naturally divided into two parts, the first for your Masters studies and the second for your PhD studies.
Your Masters studies will usually be divided into 180 module credits, half of which will focus on taught components and the other half on research components.

You will carry out one or two small laboratory research projects under supervision for practical experience.
If you complete these modules with satisfactory performance, you will be awarded a Masters degree and will be considered for the following three-year PhD programme.
Each university has its own process for making this consideration, but most invite you to an interview with the supervisor you wish to conduct research with. The interview is used to confirm that you have acquired the specialised knowledge and research skills expected at masters level, and beyond that of someone capable of completing doctoral study.
If your interview goes well, you will be enrolled in your PhD programme. From this point on, your path will be the same as a regular PhD student. During your doctoral phase, you will conduct independent research and laboratory work for two years, followed by a final year of writing up and formally submitting your findings as a thesis. Your thesis, expertise and research competence will be assessed in an oral examination known as a viva. Upon successful completion of your viva, you will be officially awarded a PhD, and your studies will come to an end.
It should be noted that aside from the above, your university may offer optional modules which can equip you with a wide range of transferable skills.
Entry requirements for an integrated masters degree in the UK will vary from university to university, but the typical requirement is an Upper Second Class (2:1) honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted.
If you are an international student and English is your second language, most universities will require proof of your English language proficiency through an exam certificate. It’s best to check directly with the universities which certificate types they accept, but the most common English language qualification requirement is an IELTS certificate, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each category.
The typical annual tuition fee for an Integrated PhD in the UK is £4,712 per academic year for home/EU students (or £2,356 for part-time study) and £19,596 per academic year for international students (or £9,798 for part-time study).
As with all doctoral programmes, there are likely to be additional costs associated with your studies, such as bench fees for lab work, travel costs for collaborating and potential write-up fees for students who need more time to submit their thesis. You can obtain funding for Integrated PhDs in the same way as for regular PhDs. Funding is usually provided by one of the seven UK Research Councils and research charity organisations such as the Wellcome Trust ; grants, scholarships and funded opportunities can be found directly in our searchable database .
Funding can either be partial (tuition fees only) or full (tuition fees and living costs). Most funding providers also cover the tuition fee for the Masters degree programme due to being integrated with the PhD, however, you should confirm this on a case-by-case basis.
As with regular PhD funding, the fully-funded opportunities are generally limited to home and EU students.
It’s also worth noting that PhD programmes which include an integrated Masters degree are eligible for a Doctoral Loan , even if you already have a postgraduate Masters degree from a previous university. Applications for Doctoral Loans must be made directly to Student Finance England and you must first be registered for a full doctoral degree. Due to application restrictions, you won’t be able to apply for a separate Postgraduate Masters Loan for the integrated Masters phase of your degree.

(b) The minimum requirement for admission to the Integrated Ph D programme is a FIRST CLASS or equivalent Grade in the Bachelor’s degree (as declared by the University) as indicated against each department.
(c) The minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.
(d) Some departments have specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelor’s or 10+2 levels. Candidates have to ensure that they meet these requirements.
(e) Those in the final year of their qualifying examination and awaiting results are also eligible to apply. However, they should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree, including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining.
(f) While the regular PhD program allows an exemption from GATE scores for students with a 4-year degree from a CFTI and with a >= 8.0 CGPA out of 10.0, this is not applicable to Integrated PhD programme.
The short-listing of candidates for in-person(offline) interview is done based on the performance in JAM 2024. Short listing for Physical Sciences is also done based on JEST 2024. (a) The interview letters for the short-listed candidates will be sent by email and the same is available on the Applicant’s interface after login to the Admission Portal. Such candidates shall make necessary arrangements for attending the interview. No separate communication will be sent by post. TA (second class sleeper class train fare) will be paid to all the SC/ST candidates who attend the in-person interview.
(b) Candidates called for an interview have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation etc.
(c) Candidates called for an interview should bring with them attested copies of all the transcripts (marks cards from SSLC or equivalent onwards, degree certificates of the qualifying examination, etc.) and produce them before the interview committee, failing which, they will not be interviewed.
(d) Candidates belonging to the SC/ST category should bring the original caste/tribe certificates, issued by competent authorities for purposes of verification.
(e) If you belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) – you must produce the original Income and Asset Certificate issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.
(f) If you belong to OBC-NCL catregory – you must produce the valid OBC-NCL issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.
(g) Candidate belonging to PwD (person-with-disability), KM (Kashmiri-Migrant) categories should produce the originals of the appropriate certificates, issued as per Government of India rules, and Kashmiri Pandit/Kashmiri Hindu Family living in Kashmiri valley should produce Kashmiri valley domicle certificate.
(h) The offer letter for the selected candidates will be posted on Applicant’s interface on IISc Admission portal under Application Status. You can download the offer letter and make necessary arrangements including payment of fees etc. No separate communication will be sent by post.
(i) The candidates admitted to the Integrated Ph D programmes should report to the Institute for completing admission formalities.
(j) At the time of joining, candidates should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc.
(k) Only candidates who produce all the mark sheets and degree certificates (original or provisional) issued by the University Authority will be given regular admission.
(l) Candidates who are awaiting results but have completed all formalities for the award of a degree should produce at the time of joining, a Course-Completion Certificate, issued by the Head of the institution (The Principal/Registrar). Such candidates will be given only provisional admission, which will be regularized on their producing all the marks sheets and degree certificates (original, or provisional) etc., issued by the University Authority on or before 31 October 2024, failing which, the provisional admission stands cancelled.
(m) Candidates who are given provisional admission are eligible for a scholarship only on regularisation of admission (on production of the required documents). They will be paid a scholarship with retrospective effect, i.e., from the date of joining.
NOTE: The results for some of the recent National Entrance Tests, such as GATE/ JAM etc, may not be available at the time of submitting the IISc admissions application. You must enter the available details of these exams, such as your enrolment/ roll number, paper, etc., in the application, but you may leave the score/rank/results blank. You will have the option to update your national entrance results in the application from the main “Application Status” page. You must make this update within 3 days of the results being declared.

The Integrated MSc and PhD programme makes it possible to integrate the MSc programmes’ optional programme elements and the writing of the PhD dissertation. This allows students and their supervisors more time for the research element of the PhD programme.
The former 4+4 PhD is now a part of the Integrated PhD Scheme (3+5).
The Integrated PhD programme is open to applicants who:
The academic content of the MSc programme must be related to the proposed PhD programme. Read more requirements in the programme description below.
The prescribed period of study for the integrated programme is five full-time equivalents (FTEs) (two for the MSc programme and three for the PhD programme). If, at commencement of the integrated 3+5 scheme, the student has passed one or more programme elements, the period of study is reduced correspondingly.
Part A: The student completes the MSc programme and concurrently completes one third of the PhD programme (one FTE). Part A is completed when the student completes the MSc programme and must be organized in such a way that the MSc programme is completed two years before completion of the entire integrated programme of study.
Part B : The student is a PhD student exclusively and completes the PhD programme in accordance with the approved PhD plan. Part B can be commenced once the student has completed the MSc programme (part A), and the regular assessments have been satisfactory, meaning that the student has lived up to the requirements in the PhD plan.

An integrated PhD is a four-year (or eight-year, if studied part-time) postgraduate programme. You might sometimes see integrated PhDs referred to as ‘New Route’, ‘4 year’ or ‘1+3’ programmes.
In your first year, you’ll study for a Masters-level qualification. Most often, this will be a Master of Research (MRes) or a Master of Science (MSc) . This will provide you with the foundational skills you’ll need to carry out research at the doctoral level.
In your second year onwards, you’ll work towards completing your PhD thesis . You’ll only be able to progress onto the full PhD if you make satisfactory progress during your Masters year.
You usually won’t be awarded your Masters degree straight after passing your first year – instead it will be ‘banked’ and awarded along with your full PhD at the end of your programme. However, if you don’t end up completing your PhD, you may be awarded your Masters as an ‘exit’ qualification, provided you have earned a sufficient number of credits.
In the UK, most PhD students are initially registered for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) , before being ‘ upgraded ’ to the status of full PhD candidate (typically after nine months of full-time study). This may sound similar to the process undergone during an integrated PhD – but the key difference is that integrated PhD students will graduate with two separate qualifications , whereas those studying a traditional PhD will only graduate with one.
Another important difference is that while standard PhDs are pure research qualifications, integrated PhDs have a taught component . During your Masters year, you’ll be required to take a series of modules that will prepare you for doctoral study.
The addition of a Masters year obviously means that integrated PhDs are generally longer, although this is not always the case. Many standard PhD programmes also take four years to complete. In fact, a potential benefit of integrated PhD study is that it can help you complete your PhD more efficiently due to the additional training you’ll receive.

Some integrated PhDs do not require students to decide on their research topic prior to starting their programme. Instead, you’ll work on several smaller research projects in your first year alongside potential supervisors, which will allow you to make an informed decision about your final PhD topic. You’ll usually develop your research proposal during your first year. This is most common in STEM fields.
For these projects, you won’t need to contact prospective supervisors before you apply. However, it’s still a good idea to think about areas of research that interest you when completing your application.

In your first year, you’ll study a series of taught modules, alongside practical research experience. Taught modules will usually focus a combination of foundational research skills and subject-specific content. You may also receive professional or personal development training.
Depending on your area of study, teaching methods could include lectures, seminars, group work and laboratory sessions. If you’re studying at a CDT, you’ll be trained alongside a relatively large cohort of fellow students during your first year, as opposed to individually or in small research group.
You’ll usually be assessed through coursework during your Masters year. This could include written research reports, presentations and literature reviews.
For some programmes (most commonly those in Arts and Humanities subjects) you’ll write up an extended dissertation of around 10,000 to 15,0000 words in your first year. This is an opportunity to start exploring your PhD thesis topic in detail.
You’ll need to complete all the modules in your Masters year to a satisfactory standard to progress to the status of full PhD candidate. You’ll usually be invited to an interview with your prospective supervisor, in which you’ll need to demonstrate that you’re ready to undertake research at the doctoral level.
Once you’ve been confirmed as a full PhD candidate, you’ll progress with your research in basically the same way as you would if you were doing a standard PhD. Your day-to-day life will consist largely of independent research, but you may also assist with undergraduate teaching, present at conferences and collaborate with other students.

By the end of your PhD, you’ll submit a PhD thesis that will make an original contribution to your field. You’ll also defend your work in a viva voce exam .

The cost of an integrated PhD in the UK is similar to the cost of a standard PhD. Most universities charge around £4,500 per year for UK students. Fees for international students range between £17,890-28,000 .
Most universities charge the same amount each year for integrated PhDs, but some divide fees into a postgraduate taught rate for your first year, and a postgraduate research rate from your second year onwards. This means you may pay slightly more for your Masters year.
Integrated PhDs studied through a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) are fully funded. This means that successful applicants will have the full cost of their tuition fees covered and receive a stipend to cover their living costs.
If your course is not funded by a CDT, you can still apply for a full studentship from the UK Research and Innovation Council (UKRI) . As of 2021, these are available to international students as well as UK students. However, tuition fees will only be covered at the domestic rate.
Both UKRI and CDT studentships are extremely competitive – most students will not have the full cost of their integrated PhD covered. UK students can apply for the UK government’s doctoral loan (international students may also be eligible in certain circumstances ). Integrated programmes are eligible for funding through the doctoral loan, even if you already have a Masters degree!

Our Integrated PhD gives you the opportunity to study for an MSc that will prepare you for a related PhD project.
You'll spend the first part of the programme studying on your chosen master's course in biology, medicine and health before moving into one of our PhD programmes, working on research in the same area as your MSc.
Your PhD will be undertaken at Manchester under the supervision of researchers working on a variety of exciting projects. You'll draw on the skills and knowledge you learned at MSc level to contribute to crucial research.
Integrated PhD students undertaking our MSc in Precision Medicine would be well-equipped to undertake the 'Predicting response to IL6 inhibition in patients with rheumatoid arthritis' PhD project.
You would be able to apply your master's learning in the principles of stratified medicine to address an important clinical question: whether we can use omics to better target the right drugs to the right patients.
Your MSc-level training in omics technologies, such as genomics and transcriptomics, would be directly applicable to this PhD project.

Integrated Ph.D. Programme is a research programme. At the end of the successful completion, Master of Science and Ph.D. degree are awarded.
The first three semesters will consist of core and elective courses specialized in one subject (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics). The fourth semester will consist of advanced courses and project work. After the successful completion of comprehensive and project work, the student will continue with research leading to the Ph.D. degree.
Short-listed candidates who have applied for School of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics will be called for a written test and those short-listed in the written test will appear for interview(s). In the School of Physics, candidates with a valid JEST scorecard will be called for the interview
The maximum duration of the Integrated Ph.D. programme is 14 semesters.
The students will be awarded Institute scholarship of Rs. 10,000/- per month until the successful completion of the coursework and comprehensive examination provided the student maintains a minimum AGPA (annual grade point average) of 6.5.
After clearing the comprehensive examination the studentship will be made equivalent to that of UGC-CSIR JRF/SRF excluding the contingency grant and HRA. The studentship will be paid for a maximum of 14 semesters (including 4 semesters of course work) for each student provided (s)he is in good academic standing.
Fellowship stands automatically terminated at the end of 14 semesters for which the student registered. Fees

This Integrated MSc-PhD. program is open for students with Bachelor’s degree , highly meritorious, and motivated towards fundamental research in Natural Sciences such as physics, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, evolutionary and developmental biology. However, for the current academic year, only Physics discipline is available, with a choice of specialization in (i) Astrophysics, (ii) Nuclear Physics. A student in this program would complete the courses mandatory for a Ph.D., along with the courses essential for an MSc., during the first two semesters, and also acquire ample research experience by working on a research project, during the 3 rd and the 4 th semesters. On successful completion of four semesters, the student can opt to exit with an Msc (by Research) degree in Physics, or can opt to continue for PhD. Ph.D. level work begins at the 5 th semester. Such a student would be more equipped, than a regular MSc student, while beginning to do Ph.D. level work.
The focus would be to bring out the research skills of a motivated Bachelor student. Centre of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences (CBCS) has a vibrant, International level research environment highly conducive for graduate studies. The goal of the Integrated program in Cognitive Science would be to enable students to develop their knowledge base in Cognitive Science and learn the skills to pursue basic and applied research in the field of Cognitive Science. The program will focus on current knowledge status of behavioural and cognitive processes and exploring new inter-disciplinary interfaces (with computer science, neuroscience, physiology, philosophy, economics and language sciences) with the aim of understanding cognition and behaviour in its research endeavours.

Educational Visit
One educational visit (1 credit) for students in the intergrated MSc-PhD program will be organized to provide exposure/experience of working in specialized labs for cognitive neuroscience and artificial intelligence/clinical settings/industry in institutions such as IIIT Allahabad, BHU, National Brain research Centre, Manesar, NIMHANS, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and/or others.
* Criteria for transitioning from MSc to PhD :
Evaluation System (MSc level)
The students would undertake mid-term and final semester examinations during each semester. Grading would be based on a 10-point letter grade system as currently followed in the University. The continuous assessment would consist of a mid-term exam and term paper/assignments/ presentations and the end-semester exam. As far as possible, students will be given feedback. The board of examiners would review the evaluation of the marks/assigned by the individual course instructors. The master’s thesis is evaluated by an internal and external examiner including an open viva voice examination (thesis defense) at the end of fourth semester.
The doctoral degree from Semester V to X in the MSc-PhD Integrated program will be governed by the University rules and procedures for doctoral degree. The duration of the PhD will work the same way as it does for other PhD programs as per UGC norms.
Doctoral Advisory Committee
A Doctoral Advisory Committee will be constituted for each research scholar to look after the planning and administration of the program. The Committee will consist of the supervisor and two other faculty members working in related areas/methodology. The supervisor would act as the convenor of the Committee. The Committee will advise the student at all stages of research and evaluate the progress. It will also make recommendations regarding the extension or termination of the scholar from the program.
Pre-PhD Course Work
The Doctoral Advisory Committee may recommend remedial courses in Cognitive Science or related disciplines as needed. All students enrolled in a course will be evaluated by the course instructor. Evaluation is based on Course Assignments, participation in class discussions and performance in oral or written examination conducted by the course instructor.
Comprehensive Exam
Prior to submitting the research proposal, the candidate has to pass a comprehensive exam conducted by CBCS.
PhD thesis proposal
Students enrolled in the Integrated program will be required to submit a detailed research proposal for the PhD thesis including a review of relevant literature at the end of the second year if the student opts to continue with the PhD.

As resolved by the Advisory Committee of the Centre, the duration of PhD in the integrated program need not be restricted and may work the same way as it does for other PhD programs as per UGC norms given that 5 years is a very constrained period for MSc and PhD since there are no undergraduate programs in Cognitive Science and a 2-year course work is needed during Masters. The students who continue with the PhD in the integrated program will be entitled for the University fellowship given to PhD students of the University, given that the students in the Integrated program are admitted through a National entrance exam (COGJET) or GATE.
Students after the Integrated PhD in Cognitive Science could be placed primarily in academic institutions as faculty or research scientists or as research engineers in the R&D divisions within the industry .
Faculty positions at IITs, ISSERs, IIMs, Central Universities like University of Hyderabad, Private Universities like Flame University, Ashoka University, Christ University and others have been employing Cognitive Science graduates.
