The Objectives of the Programme are:

  • To provide opportunities to social scientists to engage themselves in full-time research on important themes of their choice or to write books about their research;
  • To assist young scholars who have the potential and competence for research to work full time on their approved research themes;
  • To support doctoral students to pursue and complete their research work.

To achieve these objectives, four categories of fellowships are offered /awarded to scholars who are at various levels in their profession: National Fellowships, Senior Fellowships, Post-Doctoral Fellowships & Doctoral Fellowships

National Fellowships are offered to eminent retired socials scientists, who have made outstanding contribution to research in their respective fields, to enable them to continue their academic work and research.

Senior Fellowships are awarded to social scientists between the age group of 45-70 years, who have done Ph D and have quality research work, publications and papers in professional journals to their credit. Besides, civil servants, journalists and social workers for their academic interests are also considered.

Post-Doctoral Fellowships are awarded to scholars, below the age of 45years, who have shown significant competence in research work, have completed their Ph.D. at the time of their application and desire to work on approved research themes at institutions of excellence under the guidance of senior social scientists

Doctoral Fellowships are open to doctoral students, preferably below the age of 40 years, who have a Master's degree from a recognized university with a first or second class and are registered for a doctoral degree in social sciences.

ICSSR invites online applications once a year, around April-June, under its various Fellowship Schemes.  The Call of Applications is given on the ICSSR website and the information is disseminated through its social media channels.

2025-2026 Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships

The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships are designed for Indian scholars who are registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution. These fellowships are for six to nine months. Applications are invited in the following fields only: Agricultural Sciences; Anthropology; Bioengineering; Chemistry; Computer Science (including, but not limited to, cyber security, digital economy, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data analytics); Earth Sciences; Economics; Education Policy and Planning; Energy Studies; History; Language/Literature/Linguistics; Materials Science (with emphasis on environmental applications); Mathematical Sciences; Neurosciences; Performing Arts; Physics; Political Science (including, but not limited to, International Security and Strategic Studies); Psychology; Public Health (including, but not limited to, pandemic preparedness and comprehensive surveillance (genomic surveillance, sewage surveillance, sero-surveillance)); Public Policy; Sociology; Urban and Regional Planning (with emphasis on smart cities and waste management); Visual Arts; and Women’s and Gender Studies. Affiliation The applicant will be affiliated with one U.S. host institution. USIEF strongly recommends all applicants to identify institutions with which they wish to be affiliated and to correspond, in advance, with potential host institutions. If the applicant has secured a letter of invitation from a U.S. institution, they must include it as a part of the online application. Selected scholars will have opportunities to audit non-degree courses, conduct research, and gain practical work experience in suitable settings in the U.S. Grant Benefits The fellowships provide J-1 visa support, a monthly stipend, Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges per U.S. Government guidelines, round-trip economy class air travel, applicable allowances and modest affiliation fees, if any. No allowances are provided for dependents. The grant is not sufficient to support family members. Eligibility Requirements In addition to the General Prerequisites

  • The applicant should have done reasonable study pertaining to their research objectives, especially in the identification of resources in India and the U.S. Applicant must be registered for Ph.D. at an Indian institution on or before November 1, 2023. On the online application form, one of the recommendation letters must be from the Ph.D. supervisor that comments on applicants’ research, need for the fellowship, and must indicate the Ph.D. registration date and topic;
  • This grant is intended for Ph.D. students to conduct research essential to their dissertations/thesis. Therefore, the expected Ph.D. thesis submission date should at least be three months after the Fulbright-Nehru grant end date. For example, if May 2026 is the grant end date, the applicant cannot submit their thesis before August 2026. Please indicate the Ph.D. registration date and the expected Ph.D. thesis submission date in the Applicant Annexure.
  • If the applicant is employed, they must follow the instructions carefully regarding employer’s endorsement. If applicable, please obtain the endorsement from the appropriate administrative authority on the FNDR Employer’s Endorsement Form. The employer must indicate that leave will be granted for the fellowship period; and
  • The applicant must upload a copy of the original published/presented paper or extracts from the Masters’/M.Phil. thesis on the online application form (not exceeding 20 pages).

Note: These fellowships are for pre-doctoral level research. Applicants with Ph.D. degrees or those at the final stage of Ph.D. thesis submission will not be considered.

Timeline and Placement Process

IMPORTANT:  

You can apply for only ONE Fulbright-Nehru fellowship category during a competition cycle. Candidates cannot apply for Fulbright-Nehru and Fulbright-Kalam grants in the same academic year. Plagiarism in the application will lead to disqualification. Unless otherwise specified, Fulbright-Nehru applications are to be submitted online. Applications received after the deadline will NOT be considered. Extensions and Transfer of visa sponsorship will not be permitted. Prospective Fulbright participants should be aware that public health conditions, availability of consular services and travel, as well as U.S. institutional operating status and policies may affect their ability to travel to the U.S. and participate in academic programs.

Social sector fellowships

3CS Media Fellowship

  • Duration: 8 months
  • Eligibility: Dalit and Adivasi journalists from coastal South India-Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and from the Union Territories of Pondicherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Women are particularly encouraged to apply
  • Format: Applicants would be required to share a list of 5 story ideas for original climate change reportage with a clear mention of location, point of view of those whose voices are less heard. The final selected pieces will be 1000 word published pieces
  • Deadline: February 28th, 2022

52 Parindey Fellowship

  • Duration: 18 weeks
  • Eligibility: Applicants should be between the ages of 18-30; in the pursuit of livelihoods; interested in experiencing Travel as a pedagogy for learning; action-oriented with a willingness to apply their writing skills
  • Format: Each fellow will spend 7-10 days in each region of their choice and document their experiences and learnings; after understanding the local ecosystem, the story will be captured in 2 mediums of text and photographs and can be in other mediums such as cartooning, animation, illustration, and video
  • Deadline: May 15th, 2022

Aavishkar Fellowship

  • Duration: Two years
  • Eligibility: A bachelors degree in Math or Science (or associated fields), learning attitude and aptitude for problem-solving, ability to communicate emphatically and assertively in Hindi and English
  • Format: Fellows will work with schools and deliver Science and Math programmes developed by Aavishkaar to schools, teachers, and communities
  • Deadline: April 25th, 2020

Acumen Regional Fellows India

  • Duration: One year, part-time
  • Eligibility: Fluency in English; fellows must demonstrate a commitment to ending poverty and injustice in their community through their work
  • Format: Fellows remain in jobs while participating in five, multi-day seminars over the course of the year
  • Deadline: Applications will open in July 2021

Adivasi Awaaz Media Fellowship

  • Duration: 1 month
  • Eligibility: This fellowship is open to Adivasi/indigenous/tribal independent journalists/filmmakers from any part of the country
  • Format: An appointed jury of eminent journalists shall select four fellows after assessing the applications; the fellows will be given one month to submit their articles and videos; each selected print/ digital journalist will be granted INR 30, 000; each filmmaker will be granted INR 50,000
  • Deadline: August 30th, 2022

AIF William J. Clinton Fellowship for Service in India

  • Duration: 10 months, full-time
  • Eligibility: US or Indian citizens aged 21-34 having a bachelor’s degree
  • Format: Volunteer service programme that matches fellows with development organisations
  • Deadline: New cycle begins every October

Anant Fellowship

  • Duration: 1-2 years (PGD or MSc)
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in any discipline
  • Format: The fellowship prepares and empowers solutionaries who design, build, and preserve a more equitable and sustainable built environment in India. The multidisciplinary curriculum involves more than 30 academic modules with global academicians and industry leaders alongside experiential learning with live-action projects.
  • Deadline: Apply by 30 July 2024

Arts for Good Fellowship

  • Duration: One year in Singapore
  • Eligibility: Minimum two years of professional/voluntary experience, preferably in the education/social sector; prior experience working with a community through the arts, demonstrating a strong interest in arts-based projects aimed at creating social impact; fluency in English; any age and nationality; ability to attend all components of the programme, among others
  • Format: The fellowship will explore the theme of creative empowerment for children and youth, with a focus on mental health and well-being
  • Deadline: Postponed to 2021

Ashoka Fellowship

  • Duration: Three years (plus life-long membership)
  • Eligibility: Entrepreneurs with a new system changing idea that addresses pertinent social or environmental issues
  • Format: Fellows receive a stipend for the three year period to work on their initiative full-time. They also receive access to a network of like-minded social entrepreneurs, wellbeing support, peer-learning opportunities, and so on
  • Deadline: Open year round

Ashoka Young Changemakers

  • Duration: One year (plus life-long membership)
  • Eligibility: Under 20 years of age, founder/co-founder of an initiative that is addressing social or environmental issues at the community level
  • Format: Young Changemakers receive mentorship, access to curated opportunities, media support, leadership training, invitations to Ashoka events and programmes; and are expected to lead local-level initiative to empower young people
  • Deadline: Open year-round

Asia Foundation Development Fellows Program

  • Duration: One year
  • Eligibility: Must have a demonstrable record of experience in one of governance and law, economic development, women’s empowerment, environment, or regional cooperation; under 40 years of age; conversant in English; citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam
  • Format: The fellowship comprises of a leadership dialogue and exchange programme in Asia, a forum on leadership for Asia’s future, a leadership dialogue and exchange programme in the US, a professional development award, and a tailored mentoring component
  • Deadline: Check in August 2021

Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity

  • Duration: One year in the UK
  • Eligibility: Graduate in any discipline; at least 5 years relevant experience; must meet LSE’s standard English Language Requirement
  • Format: Residential fellows undertake a full-time, one-year MSc in Inequalities and Social Sciences at LSE; non-residential fellows investigate inequalities over a period of 12 to 18 months via a set of AFSEE modules and project work while remaining based in their home environment
  • Deadline: Autumn 2021

Azim Premji Foundation Fellowship

  • Duration: Two years, full-time
  • Eligibility: 4-10 years’ work experience; degree in any discipline; proficiency in English and one of Hindi, Kannada, Tamil or Telugu; below 35 years of age
  • Format: Fellows teach in government schools in rural India to develop an understanding of the ground realities of the public education system
  • Deadline: October 2020

BasicShit Fellow

  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Eligibility: Applicants should be 18 and over; available to work in-person in Delhi for at least the first four weeks
  • Format: Fellows will work on 2-6 months long outcome based projects on the basis the area of interest the identify at the time of applying; they will be paired with the most suitable mentor accordingly; fellows will have to present a project midway through their fellowship that they intend to execute by the end of their fellowship; they will get full access to BasicShit Lab, Studio, Library of Material and access to resources of partner NGOs/CSOs

Bhumi Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Young graduates willing to commit to two years and who can read and speak Tamil fluently
  • Format: Paid & full-time. Young graduates work on whole-school transformation
  • Deadline: April 15th, 2022

Buddha Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Fresh graduates from IIT/IIM or professionals/entrepreneurs
  • Format: The fellowship offers an incubation space to fellows to help them become development entrepreneurs with mentorship sessions and reflection workshops
  • Deadline: January 30th, 2020

Centre for Humanitarian Data (UNOCHA) — Data Fellows Programme 2020

  • Duration: June-July 2020, in The Hague, Netherlands
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience or a graduate degree with 3 years of relevant experience
  • Format: Residential fellows will be exposed to different parts of the humanitarian system and will work on an individual project that addresses a challenge related to the use and impact of data in the sector. The three focus areas for this year are: Data Storytelling (Education), Predictive Analytics, and Statistics (Mosaic Effect)
  • Deadline: March 17th, 2020

Charles Wallace India Trust Fellowship in Creative Writing

  • Duration: 2-3 months in the UK
  • Eligibility: Indian citizens living in India, 25-45 years of age; postgraduate degree and/or at least 5 years of experience
  • Format: This fellowship enables academics, writers, and translators to spend a few months at host universities, doing their own work and interacting with colleagues
  • Deadline: September 2020

Chief Minister Fellowship Program (Maharashtra)

  • Duration: 11 months
  • Eligibility: 21-26 years of age; graduate with a first class; minimum one-year work experience; basic proficiency in Marathi
  • Format: This programme is designed to provide fellows with an understanding of governance and policy making
  • Deadline: June 2020

Chief Minister’s Good Governance Associates Program (Haryana)

  • Eligibility: Below 28 years of age; Indian citizens with bachelor’s degree and one year of work experience/postgraduate degree; proficiency in English and Hindi
  • Format: Fellows represent the Chief Minister’s Office and work with district administrations
  • Deadline: May 27th, 2021

Chief Minister’s Urban Leaders Fellowship (CMULF)

  • Eligibility: Below 35 years of age
  • Format: Fellows are assigned to work with Ministers and/or senior officials across various departments of the Government of NCT of Delhi, providing analytical support in the formulation of policies, implementation of projects, and so on
  • Deadline: August 9, 2021

Citizens for Public Leadership Fellowship

  • Duration: 12 months, online
  • Eligibility: Must be a minimum of 20 years old or a maximum of 35 years of age, as of 2nd October; must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (3-years minimum), as of 2nd October (we also encourage final year undergraduate students to apply); must be an Indian citizen
  • Format: The fellowship has a two-pronged approach and focuses on imparting skills as well as a conceptual understanding of various policy issues. This is done through interactive sessions with policy practitioners, eminent professors, scholars as well as leaders in the foundational courses that are offered
  • Deadline: Applications will be open between October and November of every year.

Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) Fellowship

  • Duration: 1 year
  • Eligibility: Open to candidates from CDRI member nations; students, faculty, researchers; practitioners from government agencies, service agencies, nonprofits and private organisations.
  • Format: The fellowship provides a one-time grant of up to USD 10,000 (or equivalent) for each selected research proposal to support and encourage research on disaster resilient infrastructure
  • Deadline: January 17th, 2021

Cordes Fellowship

  • Duration: Five days
  • Eligibility: High-impact, innovative, entrepreneurial for-profit and nonprofit executives with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and poverty alleviation
  • Format: Open doors, minds and networks for emerging social entrepreneurs and nonprofit executives; enrich the organisation with new, emerging leaders
  • Deadline: January 31st, 2021

CSIP Research Fellowship

  • Duration: 9 months
  • Eligibility: Individuals or small groups with several years of professional research experience, based full-time in India, who have the capacity to undertake rigorous research during the fellowship period and produce a working paper of publishable quality. Women, LGBTQIA+, Dalit, Adivasi, people with disabilities, and members of other minority and marginalised groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Format: The Research Fellowship will be conducted digitally, with all primary research undertaken via computer, tablet, or phone. At the end of the fellowship, fellows are expected to produce an 8,000-word high-quality working paper to be published on CSIP’s website.
  • Deadline: November 6, 2022

Dalberg Design Fellowship

  • Duration: Three months
  • Eligibility: Work experience in social impact/design agencies, an ability and willingness to travel and proficiency in written and spoken English (French, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi are a plus)
  • Format: Fellows are embedded within teams and have hands-on experience with projects from the start; each fellowship may vary in length, number of projects, and role within the team; the opportunity is full-time and paid, with flexible start dates

Data Fellows Programme

  • Duration: Two months, June-July 2021
  • Eligibility: Graduates ( 4 years of relevant experience) and postgraduates (2 years of relevant experience
  • Format: Responsible for designing a project based on a problem are identified by the centre, conduct desk and user research to develop it.
  • Deadline: March-April

Delhi Assembly Research Centre

  • Eligibility: Masters with one year experience for Fellows and Bachelors with one year experience for Associate Fellow
  • Format: Fellows are engaged with MLAs, Legislative Assembly Procedures and different departments in Delhi Government
  • Deadline: None

Development Alternative’s Fellowship

  • Duration: One year, full-time
  • Eligibility: Graduates and postgraduates
  • Format: Fellows can work and receive mentorship in one of six thematics (natural resource management; basic needs fulfilment; employement generation; enterprise development; strengthening institutions; clean technology)

Digital Civil Society Lab Non-resident Fellowship

  • Duration: One year in the US
  • Eligibility: Above 18 years of age, able to secure visa
  • Format: The fellowship supports social sector leaders to dedicate time to turning ideas into prototypes or action. All fellows will be responsible for designing, proposing, and implementing projects of their choice within one of two fellowship tracks: digital civil society or race and technology

Digital Swaraj Fellowship

  • Eligibility: 20-26 year old India citizen who is a graduate. The applicant should be proficient in English (verbal and written).
  • Format: The fellows will have hands-on exposure to the rural digital landscape and work on innovative solutions to bring digital access to the underserved, unconnected, and marginalized communities.
  • Deadline: December 23rd, 2022

Disom – The leadership school

  • Eligibility: 21 years or above of age; working knowledge of English and/or Hindi
  • Format: During the programme, fellows would focus on conceptualising a dream mission (a critical problem or gap they will take on in their constituencies), designing it and preparing the ecosystem for the launch
  • Deadline: October 31st, 2020

Echoing Green Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Above 18 years of age; fluency in English
  • Format: A leadership development programme for individuals/organisations who intend to solve a problem of importance

Fellowship for Climate Action

  • Duration: one year, part time
  • Eligibility: Interest in implementing solutions to climate change
  • Format: A one-year immersive programme for 20 fellows, based on a mentor-mentee framework (Track 1: Fellows willing to commit to a 1 year fully residential fellowship; Track 2: Fellows who are advanced in their careers and continue to work will have their curriculum and mentorship experience made flexible and customised to their availability)

Forbes Foundation Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Nonprofit organisations based in India
  • Format: Selected organisations will get access to live training sessions with industry experts that focus on efficient data use, good communication practices, and drafting fundraising proposals; activities and feedback as well as post cohort resources and one-on-one support from the toolbox INDIA team. Upon selection, organisations will be required to pay a nominal participation fee of INR 2500
  • Deadline: September 2021

Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship

  • Duration: 6-12 months in the US
  • Eligibility: Indian citizens; bachelor’s degree with at least 55 percent marks; must be registered for a PhD at an Indian institution/been awarded a PhD within the past four years; fluency in English
  • Format: These are offered for doctoral/postdoctoral research related to climate issues
  • Deadline: May 15th, 2020

Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships

  • Duration: 1-2 years in the US
  • Eligibility: Indian citizens; bachelor’s degree with at least 55 percent marks; at least three years of professional work experience; fluency in English
  • Format: There are different types and associated eligibility criteria of awards—student awards, scholars and teacher awards, professional development programmes

Future Ready Leaders Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Individuals wanting to work on sustainable and conscious development; Individuals wanting to set up and lead/currently working in community development and social change organisations; Looking for driven individuals interested to work on local livelihoods, sustainable rural and community development; Youth and members from NE communities especially from rural areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura; Willingness to fully engage in 3 phases of residential training of 5 days each | field work | assignments | graduation event of 2 days
  • Format: Three phases of residential training modules (4-5 days each) on these themes: sustainable development and leadership; participatory community assessment and project development; financial accountability and documentation
  • Deadline: October 20, 2024

Gandhi Fellowship Program

  • Duration: Two years, residential
  • Eligibility: Graduates/postgraduates; professionals below 26 years
  • Format: Four semesters; curriculum focuses on development of core competencies wherein fellows are challenged to demonstrate learning and impact
  • Deadline: March 2021

German Chancellor Fellowship

  • Duration: One year in Germany
  • Eligibility: Individuals who have completed their first degree less than 12 years ago
  • Format: Fellowship is awarded for working on a projected developed by the individual herself with a host of her choice in Germany
  • Deadline: September 15th, 2021

Girish Sant Memorial Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Cannot be enrolled in an academic programme
  • Format: The fellow will be working independently on a public interest research project in the energy sector which could include any mix of desk research, field work, primary data collection, and surveys
  • Deadline: February 2020

Global Challenges Fellowship Program

  • Duration: 7-8 months
  • Eligibility: Indian resident citizens
  • Format: The programme invites researchers and practitioners to the School of Public Policy at Central European University and the Central European University Institute for Advanced Study in Budapest, and the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin to conduct analytical and empirical work and engaging with policy practitioners
  • Deadline: November 2020

Global Policy, Diplomacy, and Sustainability (GPODS) Fellowship Fall Cohort 2022

  • Duration: 3 months, online
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be open to working in or studying sectors outside their comfort zone; must have basic knowledge of the English language; must commit to completing the 3-month programme from October-December
  • Format: Lectures by global leaders in the field of public policy, diplomacy and sustainability; three dedicated intensive courses on comparative public administration, global commons and environment, and international political economy; networking socials with some of the most coveted professionals/associations across the world, and office-hours interaction with our global mentors
  • Deadline: 15th September, 2022

Goonj Grassroots Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Between 18-30 years of age as on 31st July 2023; matriculation by 31st July, 2023; Indian citizen; basic fluency in English and Hindi (reading, writing, and speaking)

Teams should submit one application, collectively. Individual Fellows should possess both skillsets. For Fellows applying as a team, these skillsets can be distributed among members.
  • Format: The ISDM CDSSI Fellowship 2024-25 offers Fellows the unique opportunity to develop Digital Public Goods (DPGs) to address the needs of the social sector. Kanthari scholarship

  • Eligibility: kanthari is for people who have decided to start an organisation or nonprofit to make a difference, welcoming applicants (minimum 22 years of age) who have overcome significant life challenges and carry a plan for social change because of that, and who have a basic understanding of spoken and written English along with computer skills

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Eligibility: An Indian citizen between the age group of 18-28 years, minimum secondary level of education, fundamental knowledge of disability issues, knowledge of written and spoken English or Hindi or any one of the regional languages is essential, basic research and analysis skills, and prior experience of working/volunteering in the development sector, particularly in the disability sector, will be an added advantage. The Antara Fellowship

  • Duration: One year (with a possibility of a full-time role post the fellowship)
  • Eligibility: Bachelors’ degree in any field, 0-3 years’ experience, strong analytical and presentation skills, excellent communication (written and oral, in English and Hindi), ability to work in a team environment
  • Format: Fellows are placed in Madhya Pradesh or Chhattisgarh in one of our maternal and child health field programmes. They work alongside Programme Officers to support intervention design, implementation, monitoring, communication, and so on; tasks are assigned based on programme needs and the fellow’s interest and skills, and involve working closely with the community and government

The Art of Living Fellowship/Internship Program

  • Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students
  • Format: Interns are involved in educating the underprivileged and engaging in slum development activities

The Artivist Fellowship: Young Artists for Change

  • Duration: Six weeks (15 hours per week). All workshop/ mentorship sessions are scheduled either on weekends or late in the evening on weekdays.
  • Eligibility: Students who are in grades 8-12, or being home-schooled, and aged 13-18 years
  • Format: The 2024 fellowship will focus on three themes: climate justice, disability rights, and gender justice. During the course of the fellowship, the fellows will design campaigns to build awareness on the identified themes and advocate for changes. This may include on-ground initiatives within their school or local community as well as online social media interventions.
  • Deadline: Scholarships deadline: June 30 (Sunday) Final deadline: August 4 (Sunday)

The Gender Lab Fellowship

  • Duration: 10 months (July-April) full-time
  • Eligibility: 20-25 year old women from India, must be fluent in Hindi and any one of the following languages-English/ Marathi/ Gujarati
  • Format: Fellows will receive a stipend of INR 20,000 per month for a period of 9 months. Outstation fellows will additionally receive INR 5000 for accommodation.

The Global Governance Futures—Robert Bosch Foundation Multilateral Dialogues (GGF) Program

  • Duration: One year, non-residential (US, Brazil, Germany)
  • Eligibility: Brazilian, Chinese, French, German, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, South African, or US citizens; bachelor’s degree
  • Format: This programme brings together young professionals to look ahead to the year 2035 and think of ways to better address global challenges

The Gram Swarajya Fellowship

  • Duration: 10 months
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be between 13-20 years to apply; living and working in rural, semi-urban places in India, and must demonstrate a commitment to community development in social entrepreneurship or leadership as integral members of an initiative that focuses on village development, with a vision for transforming and scaling their initiative
  • Format: The changemakers will identify the needs/dreams and challenges faced by their nearby communities; ideate with their team and end-users in their targeted area to create sustainable long-term solutions, which are in alignment with the 17 SDGs by leveraging available resources, and help create a sustainable model for rural development that empowers the community
  • Deadline: Applications accepted throughout the year. Cohort begins in May every year.

The Greenhouse Technology-Art-Society Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Researchers, technologists, and artists
  • Format: The fellowship aims to explore the ways in which emerging digital technologies are transforming Indian society, and build formats for research communication that enable broader public engagement on these issues

The Jijivisha Fellowship by Slam Out Loud

  • Eligibility: Above 18 years of age; at least 1 year of college education completed; experience with planning and facilitation; formal or informal experience with art form (poetry, storytelling, theatre, or visual arts)
  • Format: Fellows are placed in low income classrooms and use the transformative power of performance and visual arts to build essential life skills in children and enable them to find their voice through creative expression

The Mina Swaminathan Media Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Consistent writing on the subjects of gender, development, environment and rural concerns
  • Format: Fellows are expected to publish two well-researched articles in mainstream media, produce a policy brief on the theme of the year and deliver a seminar on their work

The Red Door (TRD) Fellowship Programme

  • Duration: 6 months, completely online, so wifi/data connection is compulsory

  • Format: Fellows will be given the opportunity to learn from academic experts in the fields of gender, sexuality, disability and mental health to strengthen their theoretical understanding of these issues; interact with social entrepreneurs who have taken up a cause and started ventures to make a real impact and with social workers who’ve worked on the field and at the grass-roots level

The Safe Abortion For Everyone (SAFE) Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be between 18-35 years of age can apply; young people from diverse marginalised backgrounds, especially from Assam and Kerala, are encouraged to apply!
  • Format: Capacity building in abortion rights and issues through e-learning courses, mentorship via subject experts and financial support to execute the projects as a part of the fellowship.

The Samvidhaan Fellowship

  • Eligibility: The Fellows will be practising district-level lawyers with litigation experience and a demonstrated interest in legal awareness work, either located in Karnataka or be ready to relocate there
  • Format: The Fellowship is primarily field based and will require a minimum of 20 hours of work per week. The Fellows will work create and disseminate actionable legal information to beneficiaries creating awareness about rights and entitlements guaranteed under various Indian laws and government schemes; assist them in navigating the legal system while enforcing their rights; identify areas for collective action and work.

The Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP)

  • Duration: The fellowship is online and will be conducted between 6th September-26 November (one day per week over 3 months).
  • Eligibility: Be a national of and currently living in a lower- or middle-income country; be either a social scientist with research experience or a public health or humanitarian response practitioner in a position to influence the design and/or rollout of humanitarian activities.
  • Format: One-on-one mentoring with a SSHAP expert; tailored professional training programme; support in developing an operational briefing to be published and promoted via SSHAP channels.

Transforming India Initiative

  • Eligibility: Indian citizens with a bachelor’s degree
  • Format: The social entrepreneurship programme is divided into 25 percent classroom facilitated learning and 75 percent practicum (where participants work with established social enterprises and develop business verticals for them); participants are awarded a certificate in Social Entrepreneurship from IRMA as part of the six-month facilitated learning and are part of an EPGDSE (Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Social Entrepreneurship) from TISS during the 18-month practicum.

Ummeed Inclusion Fellowship Program (UIFP)

  • Duration: 2 years, full time (2021-2023)
  • Eligibility: B.Ed/Masters in Special Education/Masters in Counselling (with minimum 2 years of teaching experience); or 2 years of Fellowship in the space of Education [Candidates with relevant volunteering experience in the space of Inclusive Education are also welcome to apply]
  • Format: The program will commence from April 1st 2021; fellows will undergo 2 months (April-May) of Pre-Fellowship Training. Post that, fellows will be placed in different under-resourced schools to understand the grass root realities of India’s education system in the context of inclusion and strive to create an ecosystem of inclusive spaces in mainstream education. (Note: Fellows will be inducted in schools once the schools start as per government guidelines). Stipend will be given through the two years.

Urban Fellows Programme

  • Duration: 15 October-15 December 2021
  • Eligibility: Graduate or Postgraduate degree in social sciences, water management, development studies, environmental science, sustainability and other relevant disciplines; a keen interest in communicating stories and research surrounding the urban water landscape in India; access to the internet and a computer to effectively work from home; must have prior experience of internet-based research.
  • Format: Deliverables include: A case study (1,000 words), visual narrative (1,500 words), and policy brief (1000-1,200) words.

  • Duration: Upto 3 years
