1. Annie Leibovitz Teaches Photography

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The online learning sphere has become an incredibly crowded one, but Masterclass stands out by working with the biggest names in their fields: Samuel L Jackson, Neil Gaiman, Gordon Ramsey, Serena Williams, Christina Aguilera, Martin Scorcese, Neil deGrasse Tyson… and in this case, Annie Liebowitz. As you can imagine, the knowledge on offer is second to none, and the production values are sky high.

Leibowitz uses examples from her storied career to convey her wisdom, in the form of her extensive portfolio and taking you behind the scenes of a Vogue photoshoot. She is definitely in the camp of "it's not the gear, it's the idea", so rather than a tour de force of technicality this course focus on conceptualizing, shooting with natural light, and bringing images to life in post production.

2. Beginners Start Here

If you're just getting started in photography, this course does exactly what it says on the tin. Beginners really should start here, as renowned photographer and trainer Scott Kelby tells you everything you need to know about camera gear, settings and how to go about shooting.

Rather than dry recitations of principles, this highly informal instructional sees Kelby sharing things like his favorite lenses and f-stops. This gives you a real leg up on learning, as the course functions a lot like accompanying him on a shoot; for a given scene, he'll tell you things like what aperture he would use or what tricks he would employ to get sharp shots. For a supercharged start to shooting, look no further.

3. Learn Landscape Photography

If you already know your camera basics, but want to get the most out of shooting outdoors, this course will help you understand how to use your kit in a landscape environment to start shoot stunning images. It helps that tutor Ray Salisbury is based in the living postcard that is New Zealand, for sure, but that just means he can share an extraordinary range of settings, from rolling hills to wild beaches to crashing waterfalls.

Salisbury invites you to look over his shoulder at the settings he's using, and goes over how to fundamentals like the rule of thirds to varying scenes. And to ensure that you won't forget what you've been taught, this course has downloadable cheat sheets that you can take with you when you go out on your own!

4. What The Flash? Controlling Your Light

Bob Davis has made a career out of shooting big events and lavish weddings, wrestling with aggressive indoor illumination, underpowered venue mood lighting and beautiful but dim candlelight. As such, he's become a master of not just controlling light by adding flash, but also of working with and getting the most out of the existing light on-location.

This course is designed to give you a foundation in how to understand light. You'll be introduced to lights, gels and modifiers, as well as DIY "dirty landing" tools. To illustrate, Davis takes you on three example shoots in different conditions, including an engagement session and an abandoned building shoot. Once you're finished, you'll be ready to take photographs whatever the light is doing.

5. Adobe Photoshop CC – Essentials Training Course

One of the best and most comprehensive courses out there, this fantastic class featuring 87 lessons and over 8 hours of instructional video! No previous knowledge of Photoshop or photography is necessary, as brilliant teacher Daniel Scott will show you everything you need to know. (If you already know the fundamentals, we highly recommend Scott's next class, Adobe Photoshop CC – Advanced Training Course ).

Learning here is project-based, with real-world examples used as the basis to teach the tools and features required to achieve effective results easily. Topics covered include enhancing images, correcting light and color, using masks (including on hair), adding text and logos, creating banners and ads, and of course retouching skills. If you want to start getting the most out of your Creative Cloud subscription, this is absolutely essential.

6. A Real Wedding, Live and Uncensored – The Ceremony and The Reception

Instructionals and explanations and examples are all well and good. However, the best way to learn something isn't to hear it described in a classroom – it's to see how it's actually done, in practice. And that's exactly what Cliff Mautner does with this course, as he takes you along on a real-life wedding to look over his shoulder, see what he sees, and watch how a professional photographer approaches and handles the big day. There's no theory here, just practice!

Mautner actually convinced a bride and groom to let him and his video crew tag along on their wedding day, facilitating this unprecedented fly-on-the-wall look at how a wedding is really shot. This video is actually the second of a two-part series, but as it covers the important stuff – the ceremony and reception – it's arguably the more important if you can only watch one. We'd definitely recommend checking out A Real Wedding, Live and Uncensored – Preparation and Family Portraits to see how Mautner approaches the day, the kit he chooses and more.

7. Jimmy Chin Teaches Adventure Photography

Another production by Masterclass, and another blowaway look at the highest level of photography by one of the best in the world. This time the expert is Jimmy Chin, an award-winning photographer who has shot for the likes of National Geographic , who can turn an already stunning landscape or outdoor photograph into a truly awe-inspiring image.

Chin shares the secrets to his evocative, narrative photography, and teaches you how to tell stories with images. In addition to mastering on-location variables such as composition, he also shows you how to shoot with a mind for post production – exposing your images with forethought to how you will treat them in the digital darkroom. Not one for the fainthearted, or the easily intimidated, but if you're ready to take a quantum leap with your outdoor shots then Chin will be your bungee cord!

9. iPhone Photography: How to Take Pro Photos On Your iPhone

The secret to iPhone photography is "10% gear and 90% percent what's up here." That's the mantra of this course, taught by Dale McManus – a professional photographer, videographer and YouTuber with almost half a million subscribers. And when you see some of the stunning photographs he's taken using nothing but his iPhone, you'll 100% agree with that statement.

No fancy camera apps and no expensive additional lenses; McManus teaches you how to shoot amazing photographs using just your phone. From setup to post production, he shows you how to optimize your iPhone camera settings, shares composition secrets, and explains how to create depth, tell stories, use ambient light and how to professionally edit using Lightroom – for free. Many of the principles apply to Android phones, too, but the course is very much catered to iOS.

10. Macro Photography & Focus Stacking Made Easy

If you've always wanted to turn your hand to macro photography, but wanted to sink all that cash into a lens without having the knowledge to use it, this course is ideal. In fact, it even explains how to shoot macro shots without a macro lens – or even on a camera with a fixed lens – so you can have a go at close-up shooting using your existing equipment.

Presenter Nic van Oudtshoorn may not be a fountain of charisma, but he certainly is a fountain of knowledge. He shows you how to shoot small using any kit, from fixed lens cameras to cheap and cheerful lens hacks to high end macro optics. He also covers illumination, including how to turn your pop-up flash into a macro flash cheaply and easily. Crucially, he also covers focus stacking techniques to achieve that elusive depth of field in your macro shots.

21 Best Online Photography Courses

Now we look at all the photography courses in more detail. We’ve tried to provide all the information you need before you buy.

Here are the brief, score-based summaries of each product. But you can read our full reviews of each course by clicking the link we provide at the end of the text.

1. Lighting 3 by SLR Lounge

Overall Score

The best photography course I’ve reviewed is SLR Lounge’s Lighting 3: Advanced Off-Camera Flash . It’s flawless in its production, quality of content, images, style, and wow factor.

There are no accuracy issues or mistakes whatsoever. It’s both fun and entertaining. And it’s full of valuable information. But it’s also quite long, at 8 hours.

This course teaches you many ways to creatively light your (mainly portrait) subjects. Your photos will catch the viewers’ eye from afar and keep them amazed when watched close-up.

These lighting setups are key for professional-looking and feeling images. But there’s more to this course than just its core content. It teaches taste, creative vision, and critical thinking in photography.

It’s presented by Pye Jirsa, a photographer, and educator whom I much respect. And you can read our full review of Lighting 3 by SLR Lounge for more info.

2. Mastering Lightroom by SLR Lounge

Mastering Lightroom claims to be the “complete A to Z Adobe Lightroom tutorial.” And this statement is very close to reality. No matter how much you know about Lightroom, you can learn a lot from it.

It starts at a beginner level. And the course quickly carries on to advanced techniques and options, reaching a firm pro user level.

It’s a true gem because of its extensive coverage, flawless precision, and outstanding production. And it has a fun, logical, and to-the-point presentation.

There are great, cheaper alternatives. But this is it if you want the best you can get, especially if you’re a professional or aiming to be one.

Read our full review of Mastering Lightroom by SLR Lounge . But be aware that the original Mastering Lightroom course is no longer available.

SLR Lounge is now linking to their updated Lightroom course. We haven’t had a chance to review this one yet. But judging by their other video content, we trust it’s just as good.

3. Lighting 4 by SLR Lounge

This is a sequel to Lighting 3 . And Lighting 4 teaches you to emulate natural light environments with flashes, strobes, and modifiers.

It has all the great aspects of its prequel. The quality of content, the imagery, the production, and the teaching style are all fantastic.

It’s rare to come across such well-produced courses in this industry. If you want to learn lighting as an amateur or a professional, there’s no better way to do it than these two courses.

You might have noticed that all three courses at the top of our podium come from the same provider. This is not a result of partiality towards SLR Lounge. These courses really do stand out.

SLR Lounge’s lighting courses are all gems. And if you’d like to start from the basics, pick up the entire lighting series. Read our full review of Lighting 4 by SLR Lounge .

4. Photographing the World 1 by Fstoppers

Photographing the World is a massive, 13-hour video course on landscape photography and post-processing. It’s mesmerizing in all aspects.

It’s the first result of a collaboration between Fstoppers and Elia Locardi . Locardi is a well-known landscape photographer.

Their plan from the start was to create the most complete and most ambitious video course ever shot on this genre. I believe they have achieved this.

This course is the first part in a series of four successively released since 2015. The other parts focus on cityscapes, astrophotography, and more advanced landscapes.

In the first half, we’re immersed in Iceland’s vast winter mountains, waterfalls, and caves. Most of the second half is shot on the beautiful South Island of New Zealand, famous for its breathtaking scenery.

You will learn many rare techniques for both capturing and post-processing breathtaking sceneries. We also get to know Elia’s workflow from start to finish.

Photographing the World wears, by far, the heftiest price tag on our list. Thus, we didn’t reward it with a high score in terms of value for money.

But its awesomeness level in other respects is still high enough to propel it into fourth place. Read our full review of Photographing the World 1 for more info.

5. The Photo eBook by Picture Correct

A bit of an easter egg here. The Photo eBook is one of the best cityscape and landscape photography guides. It features impressive techniques, resulting in amazing images.

While some parts are not fully up-to-date, its core content is extensive and elaborate, with great attention to detail. There is also a new edition in the works.

There is a section for complete beginners, but it’s better to read this book with some basic knowledge. The amount of new information will quickly overwhelm you otherwise.

Be advised that learning all the tricks and tips might take a while. There are some hard-to-master techniques in there.

But you’ll be equipped with everything you need to know to succeed in the city and landscape niches. Read our full review of The Photo eBook by Picture Correct .

6. Photography 101 by SLR Lounge

Beginner photography courses are everywhere. But they rarely reach the level of awesomeness Photography 101 by SLR Lounge does.

This course is very detailed. It shows you all the little pieces of successful photography that many others miss out on.

It focuses on understanding and manipulating light, which is vital. It also introduces you to many photography genres, most importantly, portraits.

It also has little to no inaccuracies, technical mistakes, and tongue slips. This is something that lifts it out from the crowd.

Like the Lighting courses, this course is also presented by Pye Jirsa. Read our full review of Photography 101 by SLR Lounge .

7. Introduction to Lightroom by Fstoppers

To fully understand and appreciate what Lightroom can do, it’s not enough to move around some sliders. Introduction to Lightroom by Fstoppers offers not only the basic set of tools. It also gives you the right approach and philosophy for editing.

This course strongly focuses on showing Lightroom’s image editing capabilities. You can read our full review of Fstoppers’ Introduction to Lightroom .

8. iPhone Photo Academy by iPhone Photography School

iPhone Photo Academy by iPhone Photography School is the most comprehensive course on iPhone photography. You’ll be a genuine iPhone master after 20 hours of lessons.

In this course, you’ll get to know your iPhone’s camera . You’ll learn its advanced features and options and how to get the most out of it.

You’ll also learn many techniques, tips, and compositional rules that professionals use. Many of them work perfectly with the iPhone.

This tutorial stands out with its unique approach, easy-to-understand style, and beautiful production. It also has a vast, worldwide community. You can read our full review of the iPhone Photo Academy .

9. The LIT Book by Shotkit

The LIT Book is similar in idea to the top performer on our list. The difference is its format.

This eBook aims to further develop your skills with off-camera flashes and other lighting accessories. It contains 52 lighting patterns by 52 pro wedding photographers from all around the globe.

You will get countless ideas and massive inspiration from this eBook. Read our full review of ShotKit’s LIT Book .

10. Photography 101 by Fstoppers

Photography 101 by Fstoppers is a beginner course that promises to teach you how to take control of all the manual settings on your digital camera.

It walks you through a basic understanding of lighting and using flash. Then it takes you along on a shoot to put everything into practice.

It also includes extensive sections on Photoshop retouching and Lightroom editing. Read our full review of Photography 101 by Fstoppers .

11. Powerful Imagery by Photzy

Renowned photographer Mitchell Kanashkevich wrote Powerful Imagery . It promises to teach you how to tell strong stories and make an impact with your images.

If this skill isn’t in your blood, it’s probably the hardest lesson. But it’s the most rewarding skill you can master in photography. Read our full review of Powerful Imagery .

12. Photographing Fabulous Flowers by Photzy

Flower photography is a specific niche. So you might be surprised that Photzy’s Photographing Fabulous Flowers eBook has made it onto this list. But here’s why.

It’s very well put together, teaches you everything it promises to, and really makes you a better photographer. Not just in flower photography.

Along with Powerful Imagery, this is one of Photzy’s best ebooks. Writing and general style are both outstanding. The images shown throughout won’t disappoint you – and neither will your own photos, once you learn the ins and outs of flower photography.

The ebook also comes at a very friendly price, especially compared to the courses in our Top 5. Read the full review of Photographing Fabulous Flowers .

13. Decoding Lightroom by Contrastly

Decoding Lightroom is a less expensive but comparable alternative to number two on our list. It is a great choice for the hobbyist photographer who wants to learn Lightroom’s ins and outs.

You don’t need to have any former knowledge to take this course. But it can perhaps take you to a level where you will intuitively use even the more hidden features of the application.

Proper editing, after all, is a core part of a successful photo. Read the full review of Decoding Lightroom .

14. Snap Cards by Photzy

Snap Cards are designed to help you out in the field. They are quick summaries of the key things you need to know, like cheat sheets.

The Snap Cards are ideal for the intermediate amateur looking to get more out of their work. You can use them as go-to guides for specific topics.

I wouldn’t recommend them for fully beginner photographers. You need some fundamentals. But the cards are there as a reminder. Read our full review of Photzy’s Snap Cards .

15. Digital Camera Mastery by Photography Pro

Digital Camera Mastery is the older sibling of Photo Shortcuts (number 19 on our list). And this is the better of the two. It gives you very firm fundamentals in photography.

This includes mastering manual mode and getting familiar with camera settings , focusing, editing, and photo genres. Its video production is outstanding, too.

And this time, Photography Pro also didn’t make a pricing mistake. It’s a compelling choice, priced in line with most comparable beginner courses on the market.

It has some problems with attention to detail, but not so much as Photo Shortcuts. Overall, this is a well-rounded, comprehensive beginner course with no deal-breaking flaws.

And it zeros in on content for travel and street photographers. Read our full review of Digital Camera Mastery .

16. Photographing the Milky Way by SLR Lounge

SLR Lounge is great for all sorts of photography education. While their Photographing the Milky Way is not quite as strong as their lighting or beginner courses, it’s still a great tutorial.

It’s quite short, at 2 hours. And it focuses on teaching the essentials with great accuracy.

This is a great intro to astrophotography if you have some photography experience and an understanding of the technical stuff. Read our full review of Photographing the Milky Way .

17. Advanced Composition by Photzy

Photzy’s attempt to teach sophisticated composition approaches and techniques is successful. But Advanced Composition is not for everybody.

Its core content is great. But it has some issues with images, graphic design, and accuracy.

In a field so crowded as composition books, it’s hard to stand out. From some standpoints, Advanced Composition doesn’t do so either.

But as far as I know, its interactive, slightly textbook-like approach is unique. It’s also not particularly expensive and comes with some valuable bonuses. Read our full review of Advanced Composition .

18. Advanced Off-Camera Flash by Phil Steele

Phil Steele ‘s best and newest video course, Advanced Off-Camera Flash ,  is aimed at aspiring amateurs. It’s a cohesive tutorial for those who want to perfect the basics of off-camera lighting.

Contrary to its title, there’s not a lot of advanced stuff in it. But the fundamentals are solid.

It suffers from serious production issues, which is its greatest drawback. The video and sound quality are quite mediocre. And it’s also very loosely edited—far from being fast-paced and dense in content.

If you want to broaden your photography skill set with something new, it’s definitely worth checking out. The course will safely bring you to a strong intermediate level in flash lighting.

Read our full review of Advanced Off-Camera Flash .

19. Photo Shortcuts by Photography Pro

Photo Shortcuts is a video course for intermediate amateurs. It aims to guide you through a handful of specific fields.

Overall, it’s a nice product. It teaches key points and gives you an understanding of what genres you can pursue in photography. Its production is great, and it’s shot in a beautiful location.

But it has a recurring issue of being imprecise in the details. Most chapters had oversimplifications or technical inaccuracies. Also, its price is remarkably high.

Still, if you’re the type of photographer with solid basic knowledge and your main goal is to broaden your horizon, it’s worth checking out. Read the full review of Photography Shortcuts here.

20. Action Cards by Photzy

Action Cards help photographers on the go and when their creativity is down. The cards feature 31 photo genres, with short explanations, tips, tricks, and motivation.

Their content is generally well-rounded and inspiring. The authors also give time and difficulty estimates for each topic, but I found these inaccurate.

Overall, the Action Cards are handy for amateurs who want to try as many genres as possible. Read our full review of Photzy’s Action Cards .

21. Complete Guide to Long Exposure by Photzy

Long-exposure photography is a mysterious and challenging field, especially in the daytime. With current digital technology, it’s easier to pursue than ever before.

Photzy decided to do their take on it. And we wish they didn’t. The Complete Guide to Long-Exposure Photography eBook is one of the less appealing photography products I’ve seen.

The only thing that saves it is its moderate, sub-$20 price. And the eBook gives you a fairly clear picture of what gear you’ll need and how to set it up.

There’s also some valuable composition advice—but nothing extraordinary. In every other aspect, this eBook by Photzy is heavily lacking. Read our full review of the Complete Guide to Long Exposure .

Our Scoring System for Online Photography Courses

We introduced a score-based ranking system to make our reviews more objective. Our system gives a score out of 100.

You can see a breakdown of each section below the following table. But most importantly, it shows how you should interpret the total score.

What the Total Score Means

As a guideline, here’s how we evaluate the scores:

  • 0-50 : Avoid at all costs.
  • 50-65 : Mediocre, but may be valuable for a certain niche of photographers.
  • 65-80 : Good, with flaws that we don’t believe to be deal-breaking.
  • 80-90 : Excellent products, with few to no issues.
  • 90-100 : No-brainer deals.

Here’s how we scored each online photography course. Below it, you will find more detailed descriptions. Keep in mind that we’re updating this list often.

How We Scored Each Online Photography Course

Here are seven topics we covered in scoring each photo course.

1. Value for Money

We compared a course’s price to its direct alternatives on the market. We also assessed how much you would gain financially and intellectually from it.

We always base this on the advertised, often discounted price, not the theoretical full price. Consider 14 and above a good deal, and 17 or above an exceptionally great deal, out of the maximum of 20.

2. Course Coverage

We have lots of experience creating and reviewing courses. So we have a fairly clear picture of what a course or eBook should contain within its photography niche.

If it missed out on important points, this score went down. If we saw additional, valuable knowledge included, it went up and could reach a total of 20 points.

3. Accuracy of Info

We often find inaccurate or even wrong information disclosed. Or there are heavy oversimplifications during the review process. We believe that a great course should not contain any of these.

This score can also go up to 20. Above 15, there were no significant problems in this aspect. Above 18 is what we consider excellent. This meant the creators paid great attention to detail.

Long-exposure photo of man swinging a sparkler in a circle

4. Ease of Learning

It’s important for a course to translate well to its audience. So we looked at how logically a course is built and if it had a clear line of thought.

We assessed their consistency in terms of design, use of words and signs, and understandability. Additionally, we examined unnecessary professional jargon, which is often a problem.

This score can reach a total of 15. And above 12 is considered great.

5. Production Value

This point looked at design, formatting, transparency, and digital integration in eBooks . In video courses, we judged audio and image quality.

We also examined editing consistency, animation and text elements, lighting, and resolution. This is also where the quality of the photos in the course counts.

The maximum here is also 15. And we consider anything above 12 excellent.

6. Uniqueness

Here, we looked at how special a course’s photography niche is. It goes up if there are very few alternatives.

We also gave extra points here for unusual features. This included extra videos in eBooks or additional checklists or cheat sheets .

These are not strictly related to the core content of a course. So we viewed these points as possible plus points, a maximum of five.

7. Community and Learning Support

We gave another five points for this category. It includes if a course provider has great customer support, extra educational material, or updates their courses often.

“Community” can include Facebook groups or good comment integration on the provider’s own website.

Conclusion: The Best Online Photography Courses

As we’ve seen, an online photography course is a great way to upgrade your skills. Whether you need help with lighting or composition, there’s an online resource for you. Of course, some are better than others. And some are niche products that don’t have a broad appeal.

We were fair and objective in our approach. And the process put Lighting 3 by SLR Lounge at the top of our list. It’s a niche video course . But the detail, professionalism, and production values make it a worthy winner. It’s the best online photography course we’ve come across!

What is the Rule of Thirds and why is it important?

The Rule of Thirds is the process of drawing two horizontal and two vertical lines on an image to divide the image into thirds. This imaginary grid creates nine boxes with four intersection points. If you place the important components of your image at or near these lines and intersections, the image becomes much more pleasing to the eye. When the subject is placed off-center, it creates movement in the image between the subject and the background.

Photography can be an expensive hobby. However, it depends on your skill level. If you’re just starting out, you can purchase a cheaper camera and lens kit. Once you start to improve and want to refine your skills, you may upgrade your equipment to more expensive ones.

BECOME A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Become a family & lifestyle photographer, become an expert at photography lighting, trending photography topics, fundamentals, adobe photoshop, adobe lightroom, portrait photography, outdoor photography, wedding photography, camera guides, videography, family & lifestyle, food photography, real estate, video editing, photo editing, free photography, photography classes faqs, how can i learn photography online.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced photographer who wants to master certain skills further or branch out into a new photography topic, you can find hundreds of classes suitable for your level and interests. What’s more, our classes are created or taught by industry experts and are easily adaptable to your skill level and requirements. Whether you want to learn to shoot portraits or outdoors photos, family or lifestyle photos, or just want to become a pro at Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, the right training course at the right price is waiting for you, and it’ll easily fit into your schedule. Once you start, we’ll also recommend additional learning to tailor to your needs, and you’ll be able to benefit from the community and become even more knowledgeable in your chosen photography subject.

How Difficult Is It To Learn Photography?

Photography is not hard to learn, gone are the days when you can only take pictures if you have a lot of equipment, a dark room, and years of experience. Everyone can become a photographer now, even with their own phone camera and nothing else. This doesn’t mean that anyone can take great or even good photos. Mastering a skill such as photography still requires an investment of time and dedication. However, courses, advice, knowledge articles, and a large professional community are readily available online to help you on this journey. It’s also important to find your own photography passion; whether you prefer taking wedding, family, or nature photos or have a keener interest in filmmaking and video editing, once you’ve found your passion, invest the time and effort in it, and you’ll become a pro one day.

What Career Paths Can You Take With Photography Classes?

Two of the most in-demand types of photography are portrait and family photography as well as wedding photography. While the latter tends to be somehow seasonal, you can rely on a steady source of income if you choose to become a portrait photographer. Other great options are commercial photography (including food, architecture, design, or other products and services), fashion photography, travel, outdoor wildlife and nature, stock photography, and photojournalism. Social media also offers many options to focus on, such as becoming an influencer with your photography skills or offering your skills to others.

What Skills Will I Learn In Photography Classes?

A beginner photography class will teach you the basics of photography, familiarize you with the equipment you need and how to use it, and show you how to view the world around you with a photographer's eye by formulating a goal and planning and executing your project. If you are already experienced and want to perfect your technical skills or try a new area such as wedding, portrait, or wildlife photography, your course will aim at teaching you the technical, creative, artistic, and purely organizational skills you need to become a master in your desired field. Choosing the right class, reading carefully through the description, and even contacting the tutor or community beforehand might save you time and help you better prepare before the class starts.

Which Classes Are Recommended For Beginner Photographers?

There are over 116 classes dedicated to the Fundamentals of Photography that will help you start as a new professional in this field. Even if you have some prior experience, whether gained formally or on your own, you’ll benefit hugely from the structured approach, the well-presented information, and the experience and knowledge of our tutors. Apart from classes teaching you the photography basics, you can also enroll in classes about lighting, Adobe suite, the fundamentals of filmmaking, how to think like a photographer, and many other topics that will ensure you start in the right direction in your career path as a photographer and discover what you’re passionate about.

What Gear Do I Need For A Photography Class?

You can get started with as little as the camera on your phone, but each class will include specific requirements in the description. Generally, it’s helpful to have a good digital camera with manual mode, a changeable lens and a zoom lens kit, a flash with manual mode, and a through the lens (TTL) kit. If you’re already a photographer, you’ll probably have all this equipment and might need to get a specific lens or external flash, tripods, lighting equipment, or other gear depending on the course you’re taking. Camera and other photography gear can get really expensive, so think about borrowing, buying second hand, or just getting the minimum required before you’re sure that you’ll continue with this specific field of photography in the future.

Terminally ill

Star photographer toscani: “i’ve lost 40 kilos”.

He is one of the biggest names in international photography: Italian star photographer Oliviero Toscani has repeatedly caused controversy with his advertising campaigns - for the Benetton brand, for example. The 82-year-old is now seriously ill.

For the Milan daily newspaper "Corriere della Sera", he was not afraid to be photographed looking severely emaciated. He lamented that he had lost 40 kilos and was suffering from a rare disease.

"I don't know how much time I have left" "I've lost 40 kilos in a year. I can't even drink wine anymore: the taste has been severely altered by the medication," said Toscani in an interview on Wednesday.

He suffers from the incurable disease amyloidosis. "You don't know how much time I have left to live, but of course I'm not interested in living like this," explained the photographer, who is undergoing experimental treatment.

No fear of death "I never thought I would experience something like this, it's a new situation to face," Toscani added. He is not afraid of dying, "as long as it doesn't hurt". "Besides, I've lived too much and too well, I'm spoiled. I never had an employer, I was always free," said the photographer.

Since the 1980s, Oliviero Toscani has repeatedly caused a stir with his campaigns for the fashion chain United Colors of Benetton with shocking images of bleeding soldiers, terminally ill people and HIV-positive people.

Great sensation and hostility The Milan native has become known for breaking norms and taboos in his photographic work. His pictures of a terminally ill AIDS patient, a newborn baby still covered in blood, anorexics and a "penis calendar", for example, caused quite a stir and also attracted hostility.

In the late 1980s, for example, he was accused of racism after a campaign showing a black woman breastfeeding a white baby.

There are 7 modules in this course

Taking, sharing, and viewing photographs has become second nature for many of us. This course aims to address the gap between seeing and truly understanding photographs by introducing a diversity of ideas, approaches, and technologies that inform their making. You’ll explore the meaning of pictures and reconsider photography’s role in our visual culture.

Look closely at 100 photographs from MoMA’s collection, going behind the scenes of the Museum and into artists’ studios through videos and audio interviews. Gain new perspectives on the ways photography has been used throughout the medium’s history: as a means of artistic expression, a tool for science and exploration, an instrument of documentation, a way to tell stories and record histories, and a mode of communication and critique.

Omsk

Name:  Alexei Malgavko

Age:  30

Profession: Photographer

City:  Omsk Oblast

How long have you been doing photography? What style or genre most interests you?  I have had photography as a hobby since I was a child, and since 2005 I have worked as a photo journalist. I have to do all sorts of photography, but I am most interested in shooting provincial Russia.

Can you give us a short description of your city? Where is it located? What is it famous for? Omsk oblast is located in Siberia, at the geographic center of Russia. Omsk is a huge city with a population of over a million, but all you ahve to do is drive 50 kilometers and the population density falls of rapidly. The main income source for the megalopolis is the oil processing plan. Since the taiga is nearby, the wood processing industry is also rather big here. Siberia is also known for its severe cold (to minus 40 degrees) and it summer mosquitoes.

What is something about your city that only locals would know? 200 years ago, the [now] world famous writer Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was sent to Siberian exile in Omsk. Another of Omsk's "calling cards" is the city's hockey team, Avangard. In 2006 the legendary Yaromir Yagr even played for them. Omsk is also famous for its metro, which does not actaully exists. There are stations, even a metro bridge, but no metro cars travel there, because for 20 years now they have been unable to finish the system, though they promise to every year.

Which places or sites are a must for someone to see if they visit your city?  The five lakes and village of Okunevo, the place where, according to legend, lies the "world's navel." Each year on the summer solstices (June 21), representatives of various religions come her to collect its energy. And less religious people come here simply to rest and luxuriate in virginal nature.

There is also Belovodye, a grandiose ice village that is built before New Year's directly in the center of Omsk.

The main sport in Omsk is ice hockey. The former governor of Omsk, region who held office for twenty years, was a devoted fan of Hockey Club Avangard Omsk Region. The team won the Russian Superleague in 2004. Many hockey players who were raised in Omsk play all over the world now. And youngsters play right in the streets, despite the frost.

In Omsk there are many steam-heat and fabric pipes. The city is big and it needs proper heating. The most powerful ones belong to the Oil Plant. A long time ago, the son of famous Russian poet Lev Gumilyov took part in building this plant while serving his exile here. He was born in St. Petersburg. By coincidence, the bulk of the plant's taxes go to the Northern capital of Russia, because the Oil plant is a subsidiary of Gazprom Neft. Money flows away from Omsk while it suffers from the plant's pollution. That's why all the citizens think it's unfair.
