AIA calls for and supports architectural research across the three scales of influence: Individual/human, industry sector and building function, and community and societal.

Architectural research topics

While we have organized work into these scales (occupant, building, and community), we recognize and appreciate how much more expansive some areas of inquiry are, as well as the crossover and intersections among the different scales and disciplines.

Occupant scale

Individual/human.

At the heart of our built environment are the occupants of buildings, whether they be homes, offices, schools, or other building types. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans spend 87% of their time inside buildings, making the built environment they inhabit critical.

There are three research themes at this scale. While these themes overlap, we believe they constitute different applications and therefore are worth separate delineation.

  • Human behavior: The understanding of how a building design can improve human performance, including the metrics, measures, and methods necessary in order to evaluate the impact of buildings on human experience.
  • Health and well-being: The ways a building influences the occupants’ health. This includes the occupants’ safety, as well as their physical and mental health status.
  • Neuroscience: The understanding of how the human brain reacts to stimulus and its impact on behavior and cognitive function.

Building scale

Building type, performance, delivery.

Buildings are significant contributors to GDP, yet the buildings’ design, systems, materials, products, and physical construction also have tremendous impact on the environment and our natural resources. Buildings are the heart of many communities, and these structures act as incubators for new technologies and innovations.

There are four research themes at this scale. They often overlap but have research that is distinct enough to be noted independently.

  • Building performance: Buildings consume large amounts of resources and themselves have tremendous impact. This study area covers the science of buildings, including efficiency, high performance outcomes, resilience, and impact on the environment.
  • Technology: Understanding use, adoption, advantages, etc., to using new technology to create and operate a building as well as technologies used in design, practice, and construction. We also encourage an understanding of larger technology trends (e.g., internet of things, robotics, big data, 5D printing, autonomous vehicles), which might impact the work of architects.
  • Materials: Improving buildings' function and form, new materials, materials impact, transparency, sustainability, etc.
  • Project delivery and processes: Examination of the way a project is delivered includes formal project delivery systems as well as construction methodologies, risk allocation, relationships between clients and partners, building codes, permitting, etc.

Community scale

Economy, equity, environment.

The architectural profession and the buildings they design are also part of the fabric of life, whether that be a rural community, small town, or urban landscape. The architect then is a part of the solution to problems that are larger than any individual building. This Research Agenda recognizes the importance of the architect’s role and interventions that the architect can make to help be part of the solution to larger social and societal issues.

There are a number of social issues the architectural profession, through design, can influence, but we focus on four areas that we believe architects are uniquely positioned to lead.

  • Urbanism: Influence of the built environment in shaping human potential in the context of rapidly accelerating urbanism.
  • Resilience & adaptation: Study of resilience, adaptation, reuse, urban and community planning, and other design interventions that can mitigate the effects of disasters.
  • Climate change: Design interventions that reduce the impact of the built environment on climate change, including mitigation, decarbonization, preservation, materials innovation, etc.
  • Community: Understanding use of design, community engagement, and culture to improve equity and quality of life for all.

The AIA Upjohn Research Initiative and the AIA College of Fellows Latrobe Prize award funding to research that enhances the value of design and professional practice knowledge.

AIA has identified areas of research need and is calling for expanding investment in architectural research. Our agenda includes prioritization within the architecture culture and the continued dissemination and exchange of findings.

WHAT EXPERT RESEARCHERS KNOW

Few buildings have had single books written about them, so expert researchers know to conduct searches for the architect's or firm's name and across the professional and popular literature for information about a particular building. 

Buildings are often categorized as subjects in library catalogs, which helps locate materials quickly. Remember to select  Subject Browse  when entering your search terms in  Orbis . Try these tips:

  • Search under the full name of the building in direct order: Ex: " Guggenheim museum ". If the building has a different official name (e.g. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum), you will be re-directed to that listing, and, if there is more than one building with a similar name (e.g. Museo Guggenheim Bilbao) you will be presented with possibilities from which to choose. 
  • You can also look for the building by its location: Ex:  Bilbao (Spain)
  • Or enter a related term for the building, such as what it contains: Ex:  Rare book libraries  (to find the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library on Yale's campus.
  • If the building has had more than one name, try all the possibilities: Ex:  Pan Am building  is now known as the MetLife building.
  • If the building is known by its address, try both the numerals and the spelled-out version of the address: Ex:  154 East 89th Street  vs.  One Fifty-Four East Eighty Ninth Street
  • If the building is not likely to be the subject of an entire book, try using broader categories such as "churches" or "apartment buildings", in combination with the other tips, to locate books that might have a chapter or section on the building of your research.

To find citations for articles in journals, start by looking up the building in the  Avery Index to Architecture Periodicals

Starting Your Research

Types of Resources

Books : Look for books when researching an architect, movement, or broad subject. Sometimes called "monographs", books can include bibliographies, footnotes, and indexes and often includes numerous images.

Arts Databases (Journal Articles): Look for articles in databases when you are researching a more contemporary/timely topic and more narrowly defined topics. Articles tend to be more closely focused on an argument, theory, or specific topic. Articles can be found in popular magazines (e.g,. AIA's Architecture) and can be peer-reviewed by experts, meaning extra vetting of information. Indexing in databases like the Avery Index allows simultaneous searching by subject across hundreds or thousands of magazines and journals.

Newspaper Articles : Published quickly and frequently, often documenting a particular place, easy to read

Biographical Information : Quickly look up an architect's nationality, birth and death dates, titles of major works, writings, etc.

Primary Sources: Present first-hand accounts and direct evidence, as in correspondence, diaries, or photographs

Dissertations and Theses: Find out which topics current and past scholars have researched extensively, look at their bibliographies for additional sources

Primary v. Secondary Sources

Secondary sources  interpret and analyze primary sources. Because they are often written long afterward by parties not directly involved (but who may have special expertise), they can provide historical context or critical perspectives. Secondary sources routinely include pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources.  

Depending on the subject, newspaper and journal articles can fall into both categories. For example, Paul Goldberger's architectural review of the new Citi Field and Yankee Stadium in New York is a primary source, because he is commenting directly on a current event, whereas an article surveying the history of New York City stadiums would be considered a secondary source.

Primary sources   present first-hand accounts or direct evidence. They are created by witnesses or recorders who experienced the events or conditions being documented, and can also include autobiographies, memoirs, and oral histories recorded later. In the case of architects and architecture firms, this includes drawings, office records, and personal papers. Beginning Your Architecture Research

Whether you are researching a specific historical style, building, architect, or movement, there are similar techniques to follow when exploring your topic. Think about important words or phrases that best describe your topic.

Perhaps you are searching for information on a particular architect or building, then you would want to search by name .

  • Ex: " Robert Graves " with quotation marks and in correct order. The same goes for a specific building, Ex: " Denver Central Library " (Hint: sometimes buildings are known by multiple names or even by their addresses so be flexible and try a number of options)

If you are looking for a style or movement or architectural innovation , use words that either name or best describe it. Start broadly and narrow down as you search as you go, refining your words as you learn how your topic is described most commonly in the literature. 

  • Ex: " Baroque Architecture " to get architecture and not just art in the Baroque style. Or if searching for a concept, " sustainability AND architecture " combining two separate ideas with the Boolean operator "AND."

Be sure to use the options on the left side of the search screen to refine your list for either books, articles, peer-reviewed, online access, etc.

Serendipitous, open big data management and analytics: the sedasoma framework  †.

  • Support for Big Data Crowdsourcing : One of the most prominent characteristics provided by SeDaSOMA is represented by the fact that its big data layer is alimented via crowdsourcing methodologies , like in some recent initiatives (e.g., [ 37 ]—contrary to this, in conventional approaches, big data repositories are alimented via methods that, essentially, are inspired by traditional ETL ( Extraction, Transformation and Loading ) procedures (e.g., [ 38 ]); obviously, the usage of crowdsourcing methodologies ensures more dynamicity in the data sources, more scalability, and more heterogeneity;
  • Support for Big Data Marketplacing : SeDaSOMA provides support for big data marketplacing (e.g., [ 39 ]), meaning that, after that big data within the SeDaSOMA data layer are consolidated, they are not exposed to the big data analytics layer via conventional methods (e.g., publish-subscribe , push-down , ETL , etc.) but, rather, via the innovative data marketplace model, according to which client users/applications can access a marketplace of (consolidated) big data sources and select the ones that are more appropriate and “ convenient ” to them based on their big data analytics goals, preferences, workload issues, and so forth;
  • Support for Context-Aware Big Data Processing : In addition to the above-listed innovations, the SeDaSOMA framework makes use of another really relevant feature, i.e., the approach of processing big data in dependence on the context which respect to which they are produced, located, elaborated, and consumed. This is a topic that is raising a great deal of attention now (e.g., [ 40 ]), as it overall allows us to achieve better intelligent big data processing , which turns to play a critical role with respect to specific and advanced challenges of big data, such as big data understanding and big data fruition ;
  • Support Big Data Preparation for Analytics : Finally, SeDaSOMA introduces the nice amenity of applying data preparation techniques (e.g., [ 41 ]) for effectively and efficiently supporting big data analytics tasks. Indeed, due to the well-known 3V properties of big data, big data cannot be processed by analytical tasks as they are, but they indeed need specific data preparation solutions (e.g., normalization , scaling , and so forth).

3. SeDaSOMA’s Anatomy

  • Big Data Source Layer , which locates and manages different sources of big data, which are heterogeneous in nature, distributed, and streamed inherently.
  • Big Data Repository and Provisioning Layer, which stores and processes big data, then transmits it to the higher layers.
  • Big Data Analytics Layer , which extracts useful knowledge from big data by running complex and scalable analytics over these huge amounts of data.
  • Big Data Application Layer, which includes Cloud-aware big data vertical applications that completely rely on the underlying layers. These applications focus on the main domains of modern information community challenges specified by European Union data management guidelines.

3.1. SeDaSOMA Components

  • Physical Resource Management , which handles the physical aspects of resources that are capable of generating data streams (e.g., sensors and datacenters) by diving into and exploring innovative aspects such as noise-detection and cleaning, stream pipelining, resource/stream synchronization, etc. This can be further extended by checking out other advanced topics such as designing high-performance infrastructures that solve the traditional issues regarding big data streams, including the common 3Vs of big data, i.e., Volume , Variety , Velocity .
  • Heterogeneous Distributed Big Data Stream Management , which is responsible for managing big data (stream) at the framework’s input interface, where big data is considered as data objects on top of the underlying physical resources (e.g., sensors and datacenters that are capable of generating big data streams). The goal here is to overcome the following major challenges: ( i ) having to deal with big-data’s streaming nature; ( ii ) having to deal with multi-rate arrivals and inter-arrivals; ( iii ) having to deal with the massive amounts of (streaming) big data, etc.
  • Big Data Crowdsourcing , which tackles the problem of big data collection using the innovative crowdsourcing paradigm. This aims to develop models, techniques and algorithms for applying this novel paradigm to big data collection/acquisition problems.
  • Big Data Storage , which is a major component of the SeDaSOMA framework. It tackles big data representation and storage problems in particular as scalability presents one of the key requirements. In this context, several challenges exist, which range from advanced data structures for big data storage to big data indexing, from big data partitioning techniques to innovative data management policies and regulations focusing on elastic big data storage solutions, etc.
  • Big Data Warehousing , which ensures the reliability of data management within the SeDaSOMA framework, is a key feature of warehousing methodologies and solutions due to the complex nature of big data. In our case, these methodologies are captured and implemented by the Big Data Warehousing component in combination with the innovative Cloud-based paradigm, which is built on top of the Big Data Storage component and modern NoSQL architectures (e.g., in distributed settings) that are used in the implementation of this component. This component addresses the following main issues: ( i ) multidimensional big data models, which are critical for supporting big data analytics; ( ii ) compressed big multidimensional data representations; ( iii ) MapReduce-based big data warehousing, etc.
  • Secure Big Data Processing , which represents a major concern of the SeDaSOMA framework as it is critical to guarantee the security of big data stored in the Big Data Warehousing component; this is because these (big) data are accessed and processed within an open environment, i.e., the Big Data Marketplace component. Therefore, as a result, the SeDaSOMA framework is required to incorporate ad-hoc solutions in order to secure big data processing. The Secure Big Data Processing component directly interfaces with the Big Data Warehousing component and achieves this goal. In this context, some of the relevant existing challenges are as follows: ( i ) ensuring scalability and security when accessing big data; ( ii ) implementing innovative big data encryption methodologies; ( iii ) defining novel techniques for big data provenance, etc.
  • Big Data Marketplace , the SeDaSOMA framework contains innovative characteristics because its core data layer provides big data to higher layers and consumer (Cloud-aware) applications and makes it available by employing a novel data marketplace (DaaS) paradigm instead of using a traditional big data fruition scheme. This paradigm handles modern Cloud computing environments and anticipates an applicative setting that uses service-oriented primitives in order to make big data available for consumer applications. The main goal of this component consists of making the big data stored in the Big Data Warehousing component available to consumer applications following the DaaS paradigm, all while ensuring security (which is guaranteed by the Secure Big Data Processing component). Several open problems emerge in this context: from innovative service-oriented big data provisioning to designing models for the big data marketplace, from challenges related to scalability to Cloud-compliant heterogeneity problems, etc.
  • Big Data Query Answering : this component addresses challenges related to implementing effective and efficient algorithms that support query answering over big data, along with scalability issues. The traditional query answering algorithms that have been proposed and developed in the context of traditional data-intensive scenarios (e.g., very large databases) are not capable of processing large amounts of big data; therefore, as a result, new techniques need to be introduced. The major relevant challenges regarding this concept are the following: ( i ) the use of data compression paradigms to enhance query answering performance while ensuring the accuracy of answers; ( ii ) evaluating preference-based query processing techniques and how they handle big data; ( iii ) scalability problems related to querying big data, etc.
  • Context-Aware Big Data Processing : As highlighted before, the SeDaSOMA framework aims primarily at providing powerful data-intensive analytics in next-generation big data applications, where these analytics can be exploited based on the fortunate Cloud computing paradigm. Following this concept, it is critical to incorporate context-aware methods in order to provide “the right (big) data to the right application” due to the large amounts and the strong heterogeneity of big data. This issue has become very relevant lately, especially due to the strong relationship among topics such as advertisements and recommendations in big data. In the case of our SeDaSOMA framework, we guarantee this requirement via the Context-Aware Big Data Processing component. The major relevant challenges regarding this context are as follows: ( i ) context-awareness in the proposed algorithms and techniques for big data; ( ii ) preference-based big data processing; ( iii ) scalability in context-aware big data processing, etc.
  • Big Data Preparation for Analytics , which is a major challenge within the process of designing and executing analytics over big data, i.e., how to perform pre-processing over big data in order to make more effective and more efficient analytics. In fact, it is a critical issue due to the characteristics of big data, such as the extremely massive size and strong heterogeneity. In addition, the analytics become irrelevant (e.g., in terms of “responsiveness”) due to the lack of a “unifying” schema. The Big Data Preparation for Analytics component is responsible for providing solutions that fulfil some technical needs in this context, such as refining existing data, reducing unnecessary data, normalizing data, and successfully extracting attributes and features from big data that guide the analytics process. Moreover, since these requirements can only be answered during the analytics phase, the Big Data Preparation for Analytics component needs to provide on-demand preparation primitives in order to be able to respond to requests from the analytics component. Finally, it is mandatory that all preparation primitives should be used in a privacy-preserving manner, especially when managing user data. SOLID is an ecosystem that we plan to refer to in order to handle and overcome the challenges of privacy (e.g., [ 43 , 44 ]).
  • Scalable Big Data Analytics , which is the component that ensures the main goal of the whole SeDaSOMA proposal, i.e., supporting scalable big data analytics. To this end, the Scalable Big Data Analytics component addresses the problem of defining novel paradigms for next-generation analytics that are characterized by high responsiveness and high scalability. This component plays a critical role as Cloud-aware big data vertical applications rely on the SeDaSOMA framework (being devoted to assessing and possibly showing the effectiveness and the reliability of the framework), and on successfully exploiting the results and the interactions of analytics in order to attain their respective applicative goals. Several relevant research problems can be faced regarding this aspect, such as the following: ( i ) data-intensive analytics, i.e., analytics interacting with large-scale repositories such as big data; ( ii ) declarative against procedural analytics; ( iii ) quality-aware analytics and measures of the “quality” of analytics; ( iv ) responsiveness issues related to analytics; ( v ) scalability issues related to analytics, etc.
  • Social Big Data Management for Workplace Safety and Health , where, regarding vertical application, it focuses on the “serendipitily” issue when exploring and integrating (big) data collected from different media sources such as blogs, social networks, emails, forums, communities, etc., while integrating and mining such data in order to share this data among users, along with successfully exploiting it for workplace safety and health. In this case, it will be necessary that people play an “active” role, meaning that they are able to share their opinions, criticisms, and positive/negative opinions and, therefore, create a “real” (big-data-based) community with powerful analytics capabilities.
  • Integration of (Big) Bank Data and (Big) Customer Data for Supporting Big Data Intelligence . Vertical applications in this context aim to improve the “on-line” experience of their customers through typical banking services delivered via different types of devices. Both types of such data (i.e., bank data and customer data) are naturally large and also introduce the common characteristics of big data (i.e., 3Vs of big data). These applications will also be exposed to dealing with heterogeneous types of data, such as location data related to customers, and services, such as health services that may take advantage of their integration with bank data associated with customers, which are, as a result, considered as citizens by health services.
  • Big Data Advertisement on the Web for Opportunity Funding . In this context, vertical applications consider the issues related to using big data analytics (also combined with artificial intelligence algorithms) to support advanced Web marketing in various domains (work, investments, etc.). This represents a very exciting challenge for the next-generation community, as it is encouraged by already widely-adopted technologies and platforms for the Web (e.g., Google , Amazon , Alibaba , etc.) and for social networks (e.g., Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , etc.), which give providers and vendors the amenity for collecting and storing immense amounts of big data repositories representing user profiles, user preferences, user goals, etc. In addition to these big data repositories, artificial intelligence algorithms are performed in order to discover the best sub-optimal solution in a very large set of Web application cases, such as buying, investing, dating, etc.

3.2. SeDaSOMA Implementation

  • Big Data Sources . In contemporary data environments, enterprises utilize a combination of cloud and on-premise resources to access and manage diverse big data sources. Cloud platforms offer scalability and accessibility, allowing enterprises to store and process large volumes of data efficiently. Within these cloud environments, enterprises integrate various data sources, including social media platforms, which provide valuable insights into consumer behavior and market trends through user-generated content and engagement metrics. Additionally, enterprises leverage activity generated from their own digital channels, such as websites and mobile applications, to gain real-time insights into user interactions and preferences. On-premise infrastructure complements cloud resources by hosting proprietary archives of historical data and legacy systems, ensuring data continuity and regulatory compliance. Furthermore, enterprises tap into public data repositories and external sources to enrich their datasets with contextual information from governmental databases, open data initiatives, and third-party APIs. Regarding the handling the different types of big data at this level of the architecture, Oracle NoSQL Database can provide support for the following: (i) key–value data ; ( ii ) MongoDB for document-shaped big data (e.g., JSON ); ( iii ) Neo4J for big graph data; ( iv ) Apache Streaming for big stream data. This hybrid approach to big data management enables enterprises to leverage a diverse array of sources to support decision-making processes and drive innovation.
  • Big Data Archives . Within the architecture of big data management and analytics systems, the big data archive component plays a crucial role in facilitating the storage, preservation, and accessibility of vast volumes of data. Serving as a repository for historical and infrequently accessed data, the big data archive component ensures the long-term retention of valuable information while optimizing storage resources and cost-effectiveness. Leveraging scalable storage technologies and efficient data compression techniques, this component accommodates the ever-growing influx of data generated by diverse sources. Moreover, the big data archive component incorporates robust data governance [ 46 ] and security mechanisms to safeguard sensitive information and adhere to regulatory compliance requirements. By seamlessly integrating with other components of the big data ecosystem, such as data processing and analytics modules, the archive component enables the efficient retrieval and analysis of archived data, thereby facilitating informed decision-making and fostering innovation in data-driven enterprises using.
  • Transactional Systems . This component assumes a pivotal role in enabling real-time processing and management of high-volume transactional data streams. This component encompasses sophisticated data processing frameworks and distributed transaction processing engines designed to handle massive concurrent transactions with low latency and high throughput. Leveraging scalable and fault-tolerant architectures, the big data transactional system ensures the reliability and integrity of transactional data in dynamic and distributed environments. Furthermore, it integrates with various data sources and downstream analytics modules to enable continuous data ingestion, processing, and analysis, thus supporting timely decision-making and operational intelligence in enterprise settings. Additionally, the big data transactional system component incorporates advanced transaction management functionalities, including distributed locking mechanisms, transaction isolation levels, and conflict resolution strategies, to maintain data consistency and concurrency control across distributed computing nodes.
  • Big Data Engine . This comprises the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and MapReduce, therefore constituting a fundamental infrastructure for scalable and parallel processing of large datasets. Hadoop HDFS serves as a distributed file system designed to store and replicate data across a cluster of commodity hardware, ensuring fault tolerance and high availability. Concurrently, MapReduce provides a programming model and runtime environment for distributed data processing, enabling efficient parallel execution of computational tasks across distributed computing nodes. Together, Hadoop HDFS and MapReduce form the backbone of big data processing frameworks, facilitating the distributed storage and processing of massive datasets in a fault-tolerant and cost-effective manner. This component plays a pivotal role in supporting diverse analytics workflows, ranging from batch processing and data warehousing to real-time stream processing and machine learning, thereby enabling enterprises to derive actionable insights and drive innovation through data-driven decision-making.
  • Operational Data Store (ODS) . This component assumes a critical role as an intermediary storage layer facilitating real-time access and integration of heterogeneous data sources. The ODS acts as a centralized repository for ingesting, cleansing, and harmonizing streaming and batch data from diverse operational systems, sensors, and external sources. By providing a unified view of operational data in near real-time, the ODS enables organizations to make informed decisions, monitor performance, and respond promptly to evolving business needs. Leveraging scalable distributed architectures and advanced data processing techniques, the ODS ensures data consistency, reliability, and timeliness, thus serving as a foundational component for downstream analytics, reporting, and decision support applications. Moreover, the ODS fosters interoperability and data sharing across disparate systems and departments, driving collaboration and innovation in data-driven enterprises.
  • Big Data Analytics (SeDaSOMA) . Our proposed framework assumes a central role, employing a suite of advanced tools and frameworks to extract actionable insights from vast and diverse datasets. Utilizing Spark SQL for SQL-based querying and processing of structured data, this component enables efficient and scalable data manipulation and analysis, facilitating exploratory data analysis, data visualization, and ad-hoc querying tasks. Complementing Spark SQL, MLlib provides a comprehensive library of machine learning algorithms and utilities, empowering users to build and deploy scalable machine learning models for classification, regression, clustering, and collaborative filtering tasks. Furthermore, Spark Streaming facilitates real-time stream processing and analysis of continuous data streams, enabling organizations to derive timely insights and respond promptly to evolving trends and events. Additionally, GraphX offers a powerful framework for graph analytics, supporting graph processing algorithms and graph-based analytics applications such as social network analysis, recommendation systems, and fraud detection. Together, these components form a robust and versatile analytics ecosystem, empowering organizations to unlock the full potential of big data and drive innovation through data-driven decision-making processes.

2017 is in the past. Nevertheless, the year has left us a series of lessons, new wisdom and better tools to help us face the challenges of 2018 . What surprises will this year bring us?

We asked our editors at Plataforma Arquitectura (ArchDaily's Spanish arm) to make predictions based on what they've learnt in 2017, and to share with readers the topics they expect to be in the limelight in 2018.

Their answer: Women in architecture, bamboo, millennials way of living, social architecture, rural architecture and architects going on-site. Find out everything you need to know to start 2018!

1. Understanding how millennials occupy and use space

We know that the millennial generation goes against the current. They are determined and aspire to experience things in a very different way compared to previous generations. According to surveys, this generation of young people are less interested in marriage, they get married and start families later, or some simply decide that they will not have children. In their hectic lives there is no time for domestic chores. Many of them share housing with friends.

There is a boom in the freelancer trend and the autonomous spirit of the Millennials . This is the generation that is projected to become their own bosses. They encourage the use of the same space for more than one activity, so having a home that can adapt to a workspace is key.

For this reason, it is no longer rare to find small, modern, multifunctional and minimalist apartments when looking for properties. The behaviour and habits of Millennials point to minimal spaces that are highly flexible. 2018 will be the year to address the needs of this growing trend and adapt them to architecture from the human-millennial perspective, where an environment can quickly morph into a new one, strategically combining innovation, flexibility and a vision of the future.

2. Architects facing the construction of their own work: the urgency of being on site

In 2017 we asked our readers if architects have adequate training in relation to materials and construction processes. The results were overwhelming and the conclusion was rather negative: universities aren't training us enough and we face the consequences of that in our work life, where we have to learn by force. Increasing our knowledge about materials and construction -from the beginning of our education- can't be optional or relegated to the background. We need to debate and defend the importance of a good design now.

We have seen the emergence of a series of explorations that prioritize work at a 1: 1 scale, not only at the university level, but also guided by groups of architects that present a collaborative and in situ approach, based on learning by doing. Reconnecting with the materialization of our projects is a growing trend but it should never have stopped being that way. It is crucial that this practice returns to the center of our work. 

To understand architecture in its constructive complexity is to be aware that this can only be realized if we work in multidisciplinary collaboration with others. It is difficult to deliver the desired results if we maintain a strict position as 'project managers', without involving ourselves in the entire process. While this need is reflected lightly in the curricula of universities, at ArchDaily we are striving to enhance and multiply content related to this approach.

3. The challenge of current architecture to approach the rural context

As Rem Koolhaas said in 2016; 'The current challenge of architecture is to understand the rural world', an area normally ignored by architects who for decades have focused much of their energy on cities. Considering that these areas only make up 2% of the earth's surface. Koolhaas appeals to us to change this perspective and understand that the future is in intervening in "bare, semi-abandoned, sparsely populated, sometimes badly connected spaces", since this is where we as architects are seeing accelerated processes of change, of which we must take the lead.

Lately, a small global trend has begun that understands the need to go to these areas and get to know these communities in order to incorporate, from a contemporary perspective, their ways of living, materials, traditional techniques and vernacular forms to guide the architect to make friendlier, more respectful and harmonious decisions with the natural and social environment in which they are inserted. Firms such as Talca Group have realised this, designing projects and small interventions in situ that welcome these particularities and encourage the residents themselves to carry them out.

This trend has only just begun and is expected to last well into 2018 . This year we will probably see more and more architects encouraging the development of projects in areas far from the big cities, taking inspiration from the natural landscape or traditional constructions that originate there.

4. Social architecture faces the return of the pendulum

The media that covers and discusses architecture doesn't cover all of architecture. It's not common for those who criticize it to also be part of so-called mainstream architecture, instead of the defenders of social architecture, a trend that has been praised and trivialized in equal parts for visualizing and valuing informal architecture, vernacular techniques and a commitment to those who have been left behind in society. Popular with new generations, this trend reached its peak with the selection of Alejandro Aravena as the Director of the XV Biennial of Architecture of Venice and winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2016. Of course, social architecture is not the universal solution nor the only valid expression of the discipline -Josep María Montaner speaks about seven other contemporary trends -, but the anecdote that heads this paragraph reveals a defensive force that can be seen even in 2018 , reflecting the potential return of the pendulum.

The next edition of the Pan-American Biennial of Quito added the word "Architecture" in its title. Didn't it mention architecture before? It did, but the organization hints in its statement that it has followed a different direction in recent editions, where design criticism (and architectural projects) weree been replaced by an interest in participatory processes, the story and the "emotional layer" of projects, as Fredy Massad comments.

Although social architecture blew up as a reaction to local academicism and the preferential and aesthetic attitude of the discipline, it monopolized the successes of contemporary production, progressively becoming part of the establishment. Events like the 2018BAQ can set the tone for upcoming Latin American events in which we will be able to see what paths the different branches of social architecture will take. Like all avant-gardes, we will have to face successes, failures and contradictions.

5. The post-digital era enters the graphic representation timeline in architecture

In architecture, representation techniques are constantly evolving, replacing each other by advancing technology and the ever changing preferences of society. It is undeniable that currently, digital tools have come to dominate architectural representation, placing hyperrealistic images above those of traditional representative methods.

However, through technology we are able to create increasingly realistic images of spaces that have yet to be built, with many architects advocating to preserve this intimate relationship between art and architecture in the representative stage of design that was consolidated centuries ago.

Recently there has been a strong presence on social networks, mainly Instagram, of a new language of representation that permeates the work of architects. This new trend uses historical art references and collage that were characteristic of the sixties and seventies and has been adopted at firms like Archigram and Superstudio. The fusion achieved with the new digital tools results in a more artistic dialogue about the intentions and references of some of the current architecture firms.

By merging the available digital tools with the representative intention of collage, some contemporary architecture firms have chosen to move away from the dominant hyperrealism, instead creating a new trend: post-digital representation. Undoubtedly, this is just the beginning of a new stage of negotiation between the cold precision of technology and the expressive quality inherent in architecture.

6. Political Architecture: creativity faces the regulations and the future of cities

How many creative experiences in Latin American architecture are being developed outside the rules? The evidence overwhelmingly shows that in the most heterogeneous of urban contexts, creativity and innovation were the only determining factors to do justice to the inherent needs of adopted socioeconomic models. Regulated urban utopias were not always sustained because they were subject to the actions of others, which are in turn subject to political and economic ups and downs. How can creative Latin American experiences - putting aside the rules - come to par with the regulations, and thus the future of the cities? The answer abounds historically in the demonstration of the architect's social and political role.

As the Spanish architect Andrés Jaque mentioned in the XX Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism of Chile 2017, by default "all architects are politicians" and the real question is what forms of policy each one of us is willing to defend. In this regard, political action is a tool to enhance, incorporate or transform creativity.

What do architects become? An architect involved in politics is a creative activist working on regulatory issues who pushes the limits in order to serve a social impact. Enhancing the proactive and political role that the architectural discipline identifies with is a trend that will change the future of our cities. There is a tendency to circumscribe creativity around the regulations, and this process will influence the future of cities.

In a final example, Mexico City will make regulatory changes to its creative outputs and shift to focus on resilience in light of the last natural disaster. In Buenos Aires, the new urban code will change its creativity in line with the homogeneity of its urban fabric. There will be more to come.

7. The revenge of women in architecture

"An ideology that advocates that women should have the same rights as men". This is the definition of feminism from the Royal Spanish Academy. Starting with this principle, a large number of movements have emerged in recent years that demand better working conditions for women and the end of inequality between men and women.

In 2018 some movements took over public spaces in the form of marches in different cities around the world and several campaigns spread on social networks using hashtags such as: "#NiUnaMenos", "#HeForShe" and "#MeToo". If it still wasn´t clear to everyone, 2017 made it explicit that women do not earn the same as men, that they suffer discrimination and harassment at work, that they work longer hours and that they are more susceptible to being fired for being mothers.

No job is excluded from this. That is why this year, coming from the discipline of architecture, a series of columns and events emerged that proposed talking about the issue as well as empowering women in the world of architecture. This new writing encouraged them to take up the space lost in the public debate.

In 2018 the subject will continue to be in vogue, but this time not only through statements and speeches, but through concrete actions. This year, the Venice Biennial of Architecture will be directed by two women architects; Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, and the list of curators in charge of the national pavilions already has a much higher female participation than in previous years. Some examples of such countries are: Chile, Spain, Peru, Israel and Brazil. Who knows... Maybe this year the Pritzker will surprise us by adding a female architect to the small list of female winners.

8. Learning from Bamboo to reinforce our sensitivity and efficiency

Bamboo has always been present. It has been worked with and used for generations in the warmest parts of the planet, extending its use along the equator and many kilometers beyond to Africa, Asia, America and Oceania. Although some call it the 'green gold of the poor man', this multifaceted material, with more than 1,500 documented uses, has slowly ceased to be associated with poverty. In the field of construction, its current use is related to resistance, versatility and efficiency, and is linked to the beauty of the organic and innate respect for the environment.

Thanks to its strong reputation and its enormous potential, bamboo is a trend in 2018 because it is an essential material. In a world suffocated by pollution and waste generated by the construction industry, it is even more important to learn from the artisans who have used bamboo for years. They do so with an instinctiveness and fluidity that contrasts the complex construction processes of other materials.

We should also investigate other materials and techniques with which bamboo can be used. It is not about forcing the use of bamboo when it is not necessary or warranted. It is simply a call to fascinate ourselves with its harmony , and to be better architects through its use, since using bamboo requires a change of mentality . It is a material that makes sense and produces architecture in agreement with humans and the environment, and this may be its most valuable teaching: it seems to have been made to be used by us.

The first step is to open ourselves up to realize this, and then you can start immediately .

9. A glimpse of the direction of post-earthquake architecture

Throughout history, architecture has played an important role in response to the reconstruction needs after different types of natural disasters. The challenges and limitations presented in states of emergency have forced the architectural community again and again to produce unconventional proposals that improve the quality of life of devastated communities. In recent years, various post-disaster reconstruction initiatives have received deserved recognition for their altruistic work and ability to solve problems through design.

In 2014, the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban received the Pritzker Prize for his project that "exudes optimism where others perceive challenges almost impossible to overcome." Ban has gained international recognition for his experimental and innovative use of materials such as paper and cardboard in buildings, and for his efforts to help homeless people after natural disasters or in refugee situations.

Last year, the Post-Earthquake Reconstruction Project in Guangming from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Kunming University of Science and Technology was named the '2017 Building of the Year' at the closing gala of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Berlin. The team's architects developed a new and economical compacted earth construction technique that will be more resistant to seismic activity, and which the judges considered could be applied in any part of the world affected by seismic problems and poverty levels.

In Mexico, after two devastating earthquakes that occurred in the center of the country in September 2017, reconstruction initiatives have emerged, led by the country's architectural association. In a series of round-table discussions and workshops, topics such as the seismic resistance of different local materials and self-construction were discussed.

Although the word 'trend' tends to refer to something fleeting and superficial, we consider that there is a new and growing wave of consciousness in architecture, which seeks to focus its efforts on the places where it is needed most.

At the Jerusalem synagogue where Hersh Goldberg-Polin danced in life, grief and anger reign after his death

JERUSALEM — Three hundred and thirty-two days after Hersh Goldberg-Polin danced in the courtyard next to his Jerusalem synagogue on the holiday of Simchat Torah, more than a thousand people gathered there in grief and prayer to mourn his murder by Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

During the Sunday night vigil, the courtyard railings were lined with oversized yellow ribbons to symbolize advocacy for the hostages, Hapoel Jerusalem soccer flags — the 23-year-old’s favorite team — and posters that read, “We love you, stay strong, survive,” a mantra coined by his mother, Rachel Goldberg-Polin.

Just hours earlier, one of the posters had been hanging over the balcony of the home of Shira Ben-Sasson, a leader of Hakhel, the Goldberg-Polins’ egalitarian congregation in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem.

“We were sure we would take it down when he came home,” Ben-Sasson said.

The community wanted to unite while respecting the Goldberg-Polins’ desire for privacy, she said, prompting them to organize the prayer gathering.

“But it’s like a Band-Aid or giving first aid, it’s what you do in an emergency. I don’t know how we go on after this,” she said.

She added that the community, which has a large contingent of English-speaking immigrants, was not prepared for the High Holidays, which begin in about a month. She said, “Seeing his empty seat is hard.”

For Ben-Sasson, who wore a T-shirt bearing the Talmudic dictum “There is no greater mitzvah than the redeeming of captives,” the tragedy is especially painful because, she said, it could have been avoided with a ceasefire agreement that freed hostages.

“Hersh was alive 48 hours ago. We think a deal could have saved him. There is no military solution to this,” she said.

That feeling of bereavement, often mixed with betrayal, pervaded gatherings across Israel on Sunday, as the country struggled with the news that six hostages who may have been freed in an agreement were now dead as negotiations continue to stall. Speakers at protests in Tel Aviv blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who himself apologized for not getting the hostages out alive but blamed Hamas for obstructing a deal. The country’s labor union, the Histadrut, has called a national strike on Monday to demand a deal.

A rare early September rain lashed parts of Israel on Sunday, leading to a widespread interpretation: God, too, was weeping.

Some at the Jerusalem gathering, including the relative of another former hostage, said Netanyahu had chosen defeating Hamas over freeing the captives.

Josef Avi Yair Engel, whose grandson Ofir, 18, was released from Hamas captivity in November during that month’s ceasefire deal, expressed shock over Hersh’s murder but said he was not surprised, given the wartime policies of Netanyahu’s government.

“We knew months ago this was going to happen. Bibi’s formula, to dismantle Hamas and return the hostages, wasn’t logical. It’s an either/or situation,” Engel said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname. “He’s tearing the country apart. I’m afraid that in the coming months there won’t be a state at all.”

Engel said he felt a close bond with Hersh’s father Jon Polin, not only because of their joint activism in the hostage families’ tent outside the Prime Minister’s Residence, but also because of their shared identity as Jerusalemites.

“There aren’t many of us in the hostage circle,” he said. “We’re like family.”

Sarah Mann, who did not know the family personally, said the weekend’s tragedy reminded her of Oct. 7.

“This day has sparks of the seventh, which created numbness and an inability to talk. Just complete shock,” she said.

Part of the reason for that, Mann said, was Rachel, who she described as a “force of faith.” Goldberg-Polin’s mother emerged as the most prominent advocate for the hostages globally and became a symbol in her own right as she crisscrossed the world calling for her son’s freedom.

“Millions of people around the world held onto her. Once that was cut, people’s ability to hold onto faith was knocked out today. But even though this has shattered us, we need to keep holding onto God,” Mann said.

For Susi Döring Preston, the day called to mind was not Oct. 7 but Yom Kippur, and its communal solemnity.

She said she usually steers clear of similar war-related events because they are too overwhelming for her.

“Before I avoided stuff like this because I guess I still had hope. But now is the time to just give in to needing to be around people because you can’t hold your own self up any more,” she said, tears rolling down her face. “You need to feel the humanity and hang onto that.”

Like so many others, Döring Preston paid tribute to the Goldberg-Polins’ tireless activism. “They needed everyone else’s strength but we drew so much strength from them and their efforts, “she said. “You felt it could change the outcome. But war is more evil than good. I think that’s the crushing thing. You can do everything right, but the outcome is still devastating.”

Guy Gordon, a member of Hakhel who moved to Israel from Dublin, Ireland, in the mid-1990s, said the efforts towards ensuring Hersh’s safe return have been an anchor for the community during the war. The community knew him as the family described him in its announcement of his funeral on Tuesday, as “a child of light, love and peace” who enjoyed exploring the world and coming home to his family, including his parents and younger sisters, Leebie and Orly.

“It gave us something to hope for, and pray for and to demonstrate for,” he said. “We had no choice but to be unreasonably optimistic. Tragically it transpired that he survived until the very end.”

Gordon, like many others in the crowd, wore a piece of duct tape marked with the number of days since Oct. 7 — a gesture initiated by Goldberg-Polin’s mother. Unlike on previous days, though, his tape also featured a broken red heart beside the number.

Nadia Levene, a family friend, also reflected on the improbability of Hersh’s survival.

“He did exactly what his parents begged him to do. He was strong. He did survive. And look what happened,” Levene said.

She hailed Rachel Goldberg-Polin’s “unwavering strength and belief in God,” adding, “There were times I lost faith. I suppose I was angry with God. But she just kept inspiring us all to pray, pray, pray.”

Jerusalem resident Leah Silver rejected politicizing the hostages’ deaths.

“Everything turns political so quickly. I came here because I felt that before all the protests, we need to just mourn for a moment and to pray. And show respect for each other,” she said. “We’ve become confused about who the enemy is. It’s very sad.”

But not everyone at the gathering joined in to sing Israel’s national anthem at the closing of the prayer gathering.

“I’m sorry, I can’t sing ‘Hatikvah,'” Reza Green, a Baka resident who did not know the Goldberg-Polins personally, said. “I’m too angry. We shouldn’t be here.”
