Unisa Bridging Course For Teaching

Are you passionate about education and dream of becoming a teacher?

Perhaps you lack the formal qualifications to enter a teaching qualification program at Unisa, the University of South Africa.

If so, a Unisa bridging course for teaching could be the perfect first step on your journey towards a fulfilling career in education.

Does Unisa offer a bridging course for teaching?

Unisa offers a program called the Higher Certificate in Education (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) (90093 – SPF).

This qualification acts as a bridge for those who may not meet the minimum entry requirements for the Bachelor of Education (Senior Phase and FET) program.

The Higher Certificate in Education (SPF) equips students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to handle the Open Distance Learning (ODL) environment that Unisa offers.

The curriculum includes modules on subjects like information management, basic language and learning skills, and core education concepts.

While not exclusively focused on teaching methodology, these modules provide a strong foundation for success in a teaching qualification program.

What qualifications do I need to take a Unisa bridging course for teaching?

The specific entry requirements for the Higher Certificate in Education (SPF) program may vary slightly from year to year.

However, you can generally expect to meet the following criteria:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum achievement of Level 4 (D symbol) in four subjects, including English.
  • If you completed your NSC before 2008, you may need an equivalent qualification.

What courses are included in a Unisa bridging course for teaching?

The Higher Certificate in Education (SPF) program curriculum includes a variety of modules designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for success in a teaching qualification program and the ODL environment.

Some core modules you might encounter include:

  • Academic Proficiency in English for Student Teachers (EST1501): This module enhances your written and spoken English language skills, crucial for effective communication in the classroom.
  • Being a Professional Teacher (BPT1501): This module introduces you to the roles and responsibilities of a professional teacher, including ethics, classroom management, and curriculum development.
  • Child and Adolescent Development (CAD1501): This module explores the developmental stages of children and adolescents, allowing you to understand your future students’ needs better.
  • Diversity, Pedagogy, and Practice (DPP1501): This module delves into the importance of inclusivity and catering to diverse learning needs in a classroom setting.
  • Developing Information Skills for Lifelong Learning (INS1502): This module equips you with effective research and information management skills, essential for navigating academic resources.

In addition to these core modules, the program may also include elective modules allowing you to explore specific teaching subjects that interest you.

Benefits of a bridging course before a teaching qualification at Unisa

Bridging courses, though not directly offered by Unisa for teaching, provide valuable foundational knowledge and skills.

These courses can be particularly beneficial if:

  • Your prior academic background isn’t directly related to education.
  • You haven’t studied for an extended period.
  • You’d like to refresh your academic writing and research skills.
  • You want to gain confidence in the Open Distance Learning (ODL) study mode employed by Unisa.

By strengthening your academic base and familiarizing yourself with ODL methods, a bridging course can significantly increase your chances of thriving in a Unisa teaching qualification program .

What other options does Unisa offer to prepare for a teaching qualification?

While there isn’t a dedicated bridging course, Unisa provides other paths to prepare for a teaching qualification:

  • Higher Certificate in Education (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching): This qualification (code: 90093 – SPF) specifically aims to equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for success in Unisa’s Bachelor of Education program. It covers areas like ODL study skills, basic teaching skills, and subject-specific knowledge relevant to the chosen teaching phase.
  • University Preparation Courses: Unisa offers various university preparation courses in subjects like English, Afrikaans, and Mathematics. These courses can be highly beneficial if you need to strengthen your academic foundation in these core areas before entering a teaching qualification program.
