Always strive to keep a cheerful as well as a concentrated routine. It is very necessary to plan ahead of time in any case one must maintain a good bodily, mental and emotional state and no counselor or professional can assist you unless you deserve to live. The will to live the moment and make the most of it will bring out the ideal strength in you. You are the only one who cannot let yourself fall apart.

On April 7, every year World Health Day is celebrated. It is an initiative taken by the WHO ( World Health Organization ) to raise awareness among people across the world. This day reminds people to take their health more seriously. The WHO organized local, regional and international events on this day. WHO helps in protecting health from the adverse effects of climate change, run campaigns to provide awareness among us.

Good Health

Good health doesn't only mean the absence of disease in the body but it is a complete mental, physical, spiritual as well as social well being of an individual.

It is always advisable to eat fresh food and fruits instead of junk or spicy food which are harmful to the body. Drinking sufficient amounts of water, intake of milk and seasonal food should be included in our food. Food in olden days was very naturally cultivated or grown but nowadays it is grown full of chemicals. This will harm our health.

Maintain a balanced diet daily. Using healthy oils, more veggies, intake of fruits and grains, and drinking sufficient amounts of water can be considered as a proper diet. Intake of food more than the body requires is also unhealthy .

Being physically active can improve your brain health, reduce the risk of disease, help to manage weight, strengthen bones and muscles and improve one's ability to do everyday activities. Most of the health issues which many one are facing today are due to the lack of physical work.

Health is wealth means that being healthy is more important than being wealthy. Wealth can be lost, but good health is priceless and cannot be bought with money. A person who is in good health is able to work efficiently and enjoy life to the fullest. On the other hand, a person who is constantly battling illness will find it difficult to lead a normal life, regardless of how much wealth they may have.

For example, consider a wealthy business person who falls ill and is unable to work for an extended period of time. Despite their wealth, they will not be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor and may even face financial difficulties due to the costs of medical treatment. In this situation, good health would have been a much more valuable asset than wealth.

Therefore, it is important to prioritise one's health and take steps to maintain it, such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep. By doing so, a person can enjoy both good health and wealth, and live a fulfilling life.

In conclusion, the phrase "health is wealth" emphasizes the importance of good health in our lives. It highlights the fact that even the most wealthy individuals can become impoverished by poor health, while good health allows us to enjoy all aspects of life, regardless of wealth. Hello and welcome to everyone present here. On today’s special occasion, I am very excited to present a speech on physical Fitness. Before I begin, I would like each one of you to take a moment and ask yourself what does Health and Fitness mean to you and do you consider yourself to be fit? I am sure all of you must have unique answers of your own. As such, in this speech on Fitness, I would like to provide a general as well as personal insight about what it means to be Healthy and fit. 

We must have all come across the old adage, ‘Health is Wealth’ and it is indeed. As we all know, remaining Healthy is key in order to live a fulfilling life. When we speak about being Healthy, we imply the ability to function optimally both physically and mentally. As we explore the dynamics of Health and Fitness, we have to acknowledge the fact that mental Health is as important as physical Health. 

So why is it important to be Healthy and physically fit? Because, as human beings, we have limited time on earth and being fit is one of the key requirements that allow us to live and enjoy life. A fit person is more likely to make the most of his/her time in the journey of life. Over the centuries, people have stressed on the importance of good Health. A number of great discoveries and inventions, such as vaccinations and cutting edge technologies have been developed in order to ensure that human beings are able to live a Healthy life. Since the start of civilization, people have embraced various means to ensure that they remain Healthy.

Now, as we discuss the importance of being fit, we must also explore the key components that allow us to be so. When we think about Health and Fitness, the first thought that crosses our mind is exercise and rightly so. As a matter of fact, there is no denying that exercise is the first step towards ensuring that you remain fit. Exercise in any form allows the release of the hormone endorphin, which triggers a feeling of positivity and allows you to make the most of your day. 

However, it is important to remember that exercising is only one of the components of being physically fit. In addition to exercise, you must also maintain a Healthy diet. The inclusion of whole grain, proteins, fruits and green leafy vegetables in your diet will ensure that your digestive system is functioning optimally which is a must for maintaining good Health. In addition, you must also ensure to get 6-8 hours of sleep every day in order for your body to metabolize well. 

As we have already mentioned above that being fit refers to physical as well as mental Health, it is necessary that we give equal importance to both. Practices such as yoga, meditation can prove to be very relaxing and one often finds solace in them. They allow you to relax and take your mind off the feelings that wear you down. Moreover, one should not hesitate to seek professional help if they do not feel invigorated mentally. 

In conclusion, I would like to say that we endeavour all our lives to make sure that we have a better life. So, why not make each day more enjoyable by being Healthy and fit? Make time for yourself, get some exercise, practise meditation and live fully. 

Short Speech on Health and Fitness

A hearty welcome to everyone gathered here. Today, I stand before you to deliver a short speech on Fitness. All of us must, at some point in our lives, have heard about the importance of exercise and Fitness. To ensure that we leave Healthily, being fit is an essential criterion. With only a proper body and mind, one can be happy and enjoy and live fully. 

Now, our speech on physical Fitness will be resoundingly empty if we do not talk about the importance of exercise for maintaining physical Fitness. If you want to be fit, you will need to exercise on a regular basis. Although with our jam-packed schedules, it seems like an impossible feat to achieve, we must make sure that we make time for an exercise routine. Exercising is crucial not only for being physically fit but also helps to maintain a Healthy mind as the hormones released during exercising help counteract negative thoughts or feelings. 

A proper and balanced diet is also equally essential in order to maintain a Healthy physique. A diet containing whole foods and fibres ensures active metabolism is being maintained and the proper functioning of the digestive system. One should also try and include probiotics in the diet for maintaining gut Health. 

Since a Healthy individual is not only limited to being physically fit, I would also like to throw some light on mental Health as well. With our busy schedules, we often overburden ourselves with work and tend to ignore our mental Health, which can have devastating effects in the long run. Mental Health, if not more, is as important as physical Health. If we are engrossed with feelings of depression, anxiety, etc., we must make sure to meditate as it will help bring a sense of calm. 

To conclude, I would like to say that practices that harm our Health should be avoided and instead we should try to make our lives more fulfilling by focusing on our Health and Fitness.

Physical health tells about the state of our physical body. That how are we maintaining our body. This has nothing to do with the physical appearance, being slim or anything like that. It means that how our physical body is operating.

Physical health powerfully connects and affects other components of health. For example, if we don’t sleep well, or if we are having an interrupted sleep then the next day we are not able to perform well.

If we are not feeling physically healthy then it affects our mood and confidence level as well. We can adapt certain healthy habits to live a healthy lifestyle. What is Mental Health?

We all have mental health. It is just as important as physical health. Mental health comprises our emotional, psychological and social well being. It affects how we feel, think and act. It also is a determinant of how we handle stress.

Thus, it is very important at every stage of life. It depends upon our genetic makeup and upbringing, Our life circumstances and the stresses we encounter in our life. Some people at some stage may have mental disorders like depression and anxiety.

Later at other stages of life, they may have positive mental health when they feel contented & fulfilled. Our aim should be to have positive mental health where we can reach our full potential and live a satisfying life.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes mental health as a state of well being where an individual realizes his full potential, can cope with the stresses in a productive manner and convert it productively and contribute towards the well being of our community.

Being mentally healthy implies that we are able to cope up with difficult times, feel in control, confident and good about ourselves, managing & expressing your emotions and building and maintaining good relationships.

Health specialists say that connecting the dots between food, exercise, and sleep can make a big difference in our health, both mental and physical health. Exercising, eating the right food, nourishing the mind with positive thoughts and healthy companionship.

Many decorated personnel in these organizations are recognized for their extraordinary performance and heroism in battle or for their bravery in challenging conditions.

In addition, there are many job opportunities available for healthy individuals, even in the private sector, where professional skills are the main requirement. Health is highly valued everywhere and can be a great asset for a person throughout their life.

It is important to note that the negativity and stress in a person’s mind can be reflected on their face, while positive thoughts from a healthy mind can bring a sparkle to their appearance. The mind and body are closely interconnected, and their influence on each other can create a cycle of reactions if not controlled.

Improving good health is important because it holds great value. However, there are areas where healthcare centers are lacking, leaving many people suffering without proper medical facilities. In rural areas, hospitals operate without doctors or medicines, leaving people with multiple diseases or injuries without treatment. Poor people cannot afford expensive treatment in big cities or private hospitals for major diseases.

The solution to this issue requires more than just medical facilities; awareness is also essential. Regular physical exercise is necessary for sound health and efficiency, and people who are aware of their health often join Gymnasium and Yoga camps. The inspiration they provide will encourage others to follow their lead and strive for a disease-free life with robust health.

If a person can eliminate unhealthy and negative thoughts such as self-indulgence from his mind, he can find the will to improve his body. This will free him from most illnesses that are of psychological origin. As he begins to improve his health, he will encounter a superior mind.

Hello everyone, my name is Sachin Kulkarni and today, I’m going to give a speech on health is wealth. Please forgive me if I make any mistakes.

Good health is one of the most valuable assets for human beings in life. If someone’s health is not good, he can neither live his life comfortably nor can enjoy the moments of life like others.

Health is something that can be cured with money, but can’t be bought. That means no matter how rich we are, we can’t buy good health.

Everyone wants good health but no one follows things that are responsible for good health. To be healthy, we should meditate, do physical work, eat healthy food, etc. But, people don’t pay attention to them.

We can live life without money but not without good health. So, we should pay special attention to our health because only good health can take us towards the peak.

If we really want to live a healthy life, we have to wake up early in the morning and do physical and mental exercises for a definite interval of time, as well as we have to consume hymns that keep our health good.

At last, I’ll request to everybody to maintain his health for the enjoyment of life.

First of all, my greetings to everyone who is listening to me here. My name is Subodh Bharti and I study in class 8th. Today, I got an opportunity to express my thoughts about health is wealth. So, if I made any mistake, please give me pardon.

As you all know that progress in any field is possible only when we have good health. In other words, success can’t be achieved without good health. Nevertheless, people don’t focus on their health.

We all are so busy shaping our future that we have forgotten to care about our health, whereas only good health can take us towards a good future. We don’t want to do any physical or mental work. As a result, we have become very lazy.

In the earlier decades, when there was no technology, we were not dependent on any machine or equipment, but increasing technology has made us dependent.

Today, we are completely dependent on machines. We don’t require much physical activity while doing any work, due to which we’re getting surrounded by various types of diseases. To become healthy, it’s essential to be mentally, intellectually, physically active and eat food that can strengthen us in every way.

In the true sense, our good health is the only wealth. if we are healthy, we can be happy and enjoy our life with no stress. If we are unwell, no matter how much money we have, it cannot give us happiness.

So, always try to stay fit so that you don’t have any stress or disease.

Good morning to all the respected teachers and students, today, I’m going to give a speech on health is wealth, please forgive me if I make any mistakes unknowingly.

Health is wealth, in this proverb health is compared to wealth. No matter how much money we have, if we are physically unwell, no one is poorer than us.

It’s also believed that whether we are rich or poor, diseases don’t come after seeing our prosperity and poverty, but it’s absolutely true that they capture those who remain physically or mentally inactive.

In today’s era, we are chasing our work so fast that we don’t worry about our health.

There is no doubt that working is necessary for our livelihood, but we should also take care of our health. Only a healthy body motivates us to do work and if we are unhealthy, we cannot do anything efficiently.

Due to our body being unhealthy, neither we feel energetic nor are we motivated to do any work. That’s why it is always said that health is the first wealth.

To stay away from diseases, we should exercise regularly and do it on a daily basis. At the same time, we should take healthy food and be active in our work as much as possible because inactivity and laziness are such things that give a feast to diseases.

If possible, all parents should motivate their children to take yoga classes or regular exercise so that they can lead healthy and happy lives. Also, we have to make a habit of being happy by reducing anger. It has been known for centuries how beneficial laughter is for health.

A healthy and happy life will come only when we are physically and mentally fit otherwise we will spend our days in despair and passivity.

Now, I end my words and suggest you keep your body healthy.

Hello everyone, My name is Vijay Gupta and I belong to a very small town that is situated in district Hardoi, which is in Uttar Pradesh. 1. Education – I’ve completed my primary education from a private school that is situated in my hometown and upper primary, matric and higher secondary education have been completed from a government college. But during the preparation, I was being graduated from CSJMU Kanpur. I completed my graduation in 2016 and now I’m pursuing an educational degree ( B.Ed. ). 2. Profession – Although I love teaching, but I also do blogging. Both are my favorite jobs.

The relevance and importance of promoting health in national SDG responses, Keynote address at the 9th Global conference on health promotion

Excellencies, honourable ministers, distinguished participants, ladies and gentlemen,

I thank Shanghai for hosting this event and for making its airport terminals and railway stations smoke-free. We can all breathe more easily.

We welcome the attention being given to healthy cities, good governance that follows a whole-of-society approach, and health literacy as an enabling factor in promoting health.

City mayors can introduce health promoting measures more easily than at the national level. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides the platform for a whole-of-society approach. Health literacy must extend from the personal to the political and policy levels.

Health promotion is essentially about changing human behaviours, and there is nothing harder to do in all of public health.

Delivering messages that change human behaviours is much harder than delivering vaccines, medicines, and bednets.

Some of the most successful strategies use population-wide interventions to reshape the environments in which people make their lifestyle choices. Evidence shows that reshaping unhealthy environments does more to promote health than campaigns that try to persuade changes using health messages alone.

At national and municipal levels, legislative and fiscal measures are among the most effective interventions, but often face stiff and well-funded resistance from powerful industries that market unhealthy products. This is why we need health literacy at the political level, in the interest of policy coherence spanning multiple sectors.

Ministries of health nearly always have their facts and evidence straight, but ministries of finance, trade, agriculture, and foreign affairs are more susceptible to persuasion by industry arguments.

The use of plain packaging to reduce tobacco consumption provides a good example. Industry’s first argument is blunt: plain packaging does not work. This argument flies in the face of the facts.

Plain packaging is a measure, under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, pioneered in Australia. Following implementation of the country’s plain packaging law, smoking rates fell to historical lows.

The early evidence from Australia shows that plain packaging, as part of a comprehensive approach to tobacco control, is reducing the appeal of tobacco products and increasing the effectiveness of health warnings.

No wonder that France and the United Kingdom have begun implementing plain packaging laws, and New Zealand and Hungary have recently passed laws. Many other countries are close behind.

The tobacco industry tells ministries in non-health sectors a different story. As industry argues, plain packaging fuels the black market, funds organized crime, and supports international terrorism. Such arguments sound terrifying, but not a shred of evidence supports them.

This example underscores my principal advice to you. Changing the environment in which people make their lifestyle choices requires extraordinary government commitment, courage, and persistence, even when we have all the facts on our side.

We cannot let health be sacrificed in what looks increasing like a post-fact, post-truth world.

Tobacco use kills around 6 million people each year. That’s a fact.

Every single one of those deaths is an entirely avoidable tragedy. That’s the truth.

We have some recent victories to celebrate, in the courts of Australia, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and especially Uruguay.

In July, after six years of harassment by the tobacco industry and its lawyers, tiny Uruguay, with its population of 3.5 million people, defeated the world’s largest tobacco company.

This is a landmark victory, as it upholds the right of a sovereign government to protect its citizens from a deadly and addictive product. It gives precedence to that right over obligations set out in trade agreements or infringements of intellectual property rights.

In one of its strongest recommendations, the WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity urged governments to implement an effective tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.

The Commission’s report further urged governments to accept their responsibility to protect children, including a responsibility to take action without considering the impact on producers of unhealthy foods and beverages.

The oft-heard argument that lifestyle behaviours are a matter of personal choice does not apply to children. Obesity in children is society’s fault, not theirs.

In October, WHO urged governments to introduce taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages to reduce their significant contribution to obesity, diabetes, and dental decay. The WHO recommendation was based on a technical report documenting the effectiveness of soda taxes and offering practical guidance on their design.

Industry’s reaction has been swift, making two predictable arguments. First, soda taxes do not work, despite evidence to the contrary. Second, soda taxes are regressive as they punish the poor.

This argument brushes aside the fact that it is precisely the poor who suffer most greatly from diet-related diseases. Soda is liquid candy that meets no nutritional needs. If fiscal policies reduce soda consumption among the poor, this is a huge and most desirable victory for health.

Again, my advice to you is straightforward. Out-shout industry with the facts.

Ladies and gentlemen,

This is the first conference on health promotion being held under the SDGs.

At both the national and international levels, the SDGs formally embrace the need for multisectoral collaboration. What they do especially well is to recognize that today’s complex health challenges can no longer be addressed by the health sector acting alone.

Curbing the rise of antimicrobial resistance requires policy support from agriculture. Abundant evidence shows that educated mothers have the healthiest families. Access to clean energy fuels economic growth, but it also reduces millions of deaths from respiratory and cardiovascular disease associated with air pollution.

The inclusion of a target for reaching universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, gives health the power to build fair, stable, and cohesive societies while also furthering the overarching objective of ending poverty.

Health is an end-point that reflects the success of multiple other goals. Because the determinants of health are so broad, progress in improving health is a reliable indicator of progress in implementing the overall agenda.

In the final analysis, the ultimate objective of all development activities, whether aimed at improving food and water supplies or making cities safe, is to sustain human lives in good health.

FACT FOCUS: A look at false claims around Kamala Harris and her campaign for the White House

Democrats are quickly rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris as their likely presidential nominee after President Joe Biden’s ground-shaking decision to bow out of the 2024 race.

The announcement that Vice President Kamala Harris will seek the Democratic nomination for president is inspiring a wave of false claims about her eligibility and her background. Some first emerged years ago, while others only surfaced after President Joe Biden’s decision to end his bid for a second term.

Here’s a look at the facts.

CLAIM: Harris is not an American citizen and therefore cannot serve as commander in chief.

THE FACTS: Completely false . Harris is a natural born U.S. citizen. She was born on Oct. 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, according to a copy of her birth certificate, obtained by The Associated Press.

Her mother, a cancer researcher from India, and her father, an economist from Jamaica, met as graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley.

Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, anyone born on U.S. soil is considered a natural born U.S. citizen and eligible to serve as either the vice president or president.

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,” reads the amendment.

There is no question or legitimate debate about whether a citizen like Harris is eligible to serve as president or vice president, said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School.

“So many legal questions are really nuanced — this isn’t one of those situations,” Levinson told the AP on Monday.

Still, social media posts making the debunked assertion that Harris cannot serve as president went viral soon after Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race and would back Harris for president.

“Kamala Harris is not eligible to run for President,” read one post on X that was liked more than 34,000 times. “Neither of her parents were natural born American citizens when she was born.”

False assertions about Harris’ eligibility began circulating in 2019 when she launched her bid for the presidency. They got a boost, thanks in part to then-President Donald Trump, when Biden selected her as his running mate.

“I heard today that she doesn’t meet the requirements,” the Republican said of Harris in 2019.

CLAIM: Harris is not Black.

THE FACTS: This is false. Harris is Black and Indian . Her father, Donald Harris, is a Black man who was born in Jamaica. Shyamala Gopalan, her mother, was born in southern India. Harris has spoken publicly for many years, including in her 2019 autobiography , about how she identifies with the heritage of both her parents.

Despite ample evidence to the contrary, social media users are making erroneous claims about Harris’ race.

“Just a reminder that Kamala Harris @KamalaHarris isn’t black,” reads one X post that had received approximately 42,000 likes and 20,400 shares as of Monday. “She Indian American. She pretends to be black as part of the delusional, Democrat DEI quota.”

But Harris is both Black and Indian. Indeed, she is the first woman, Black person and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. This fact is highlighted in her biography on WhiteHouse.gov and she has spoken about her ethnicity on many occasions.

Harris wrote in her autobiography, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” that she identifies with the heritage of both her mother and father.

“My mother, grandparents, aunts, and uncle instilled us with pride in our South Asian roots,” she wrote. “Our classical Indian names harked back to our heritage, and we were raised with a strong awareness and appreciation for Indian culture.”

In the next paragraph, she adds, “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters.” Harris again refers to herself as a “black woman” in the book’s next chapter.

CLAIM: Harris got her start by having an affair with a married man, California politician Willie Brown.

THE FACTS: This is missing some important context. Brown was separated from his wife during the relationship, which was not a secret.

Brown, 90, is a former mayor of San Francisco who was serving as speaker of the California State Assembly in the 1990s when he and Harris were in a relationship. Brown had separated from his wife in 1982.

“Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago,” Brown wrote in 2020 in the San Francisco Chronicle under the article title, “Sure, I dated Kamala Harris. So what?”

He wrote that he supported Harris’ first race to be San Francisco district attorney — just as he has supported a long list of other California politicians, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Harris, 59, was state attorney general from 2011-2017 and served in the Senate from 2017 until 2021, when she became vice president. She has been married to Doug Emhoff since 2014.

Harris’ critics have used the past relationship to question her qualifications, as Fox News personality Tomi Lahren did when she wrote on social media in 2019: “Kamala did you fight for ideals or did you sleep your way to the top with Willie Brown.” Lahren later apologized for the comment.

Trump and some of his supporters have also highlighted the nearly three-decade old relationship in recent attacks on Harris .

CLAIM: An Inside Edition clip of television host Montel Williams holding hands with Harris and another woman is proof that Harris was his “side piece.”

THE FACTS: The clip shows Montel with Harris and his daughter, Ashley Williams. Harris and Williams, a former marine who hosted “The Montel Williams Show” for more than a decade, dated briefly in the early 2000s.

In the clip, taken from a 2019 Inside Edition segment , Williams can be seen posing for photographs and holding hands with both women as they arrive at the 2001 Eighth Annual Race to Erase MS in Los Angeles.

But social media users are misrepresenting the clip, using it as alleged evidence that Harris was Montel’s “side piece” — a term used to describe a person, typically a woman, who has a sexual relationship with a man in a monogamous relationship.

Williams addressed the false claims in an X post on Monday, writing in reference to the Inside Edition clip, “as most of you know, that is my daughter to my right.” Getty Images photos from the Los Angeles gala identify the women as Harris and Ashley Williams.

In 2019, Williams described his relationship with Harris in a post on X, then known as Twitter.

“@KamalaHarris and I briefly dated about 20 years ago when we were both single,” he wrote in an X post at the time. “So what? I have great respect for Sen. Harris. I have to wonder if the same stories about her dating history would have been written if she were a male candidate?”

CLAIM: Harris promised to inflict the “vengeance of a nation” on Trump supporters.

THE FACTS: A fabricated quote attributed to Harris is spreading online five years after it first surfaced.

In the quote, Harris supposedly promises that if Trump is defeated in 2020, Trump supporters will be targeted by the federal government: “Once Trump’s gone and we have regained our rightful place in the White House, look out if you supported him and endorsed his actions, because we’ll be coming for you next. You will feel the vengeance of a nation.”

The quote was shared again on social media this week. One post on X containing an image of the quote was shared more than 22,000 times as of Monday afternoon.

The remarks didn’t come from Harris , but from a satirical article published online in August 2019. Shortly after, Trump supporters like musician Ted Nugent reposted the comments without noting they were fake.

CLAIM: A video shows Harris saying in a speech: “Today is today. And yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So live today, so the future today will be as the past today as it is tomorrow.”

THE FACTS: Harris never said this. Footage from a 2023 rally on reproductive rights at Howard University, her alma mater, was altered to make it seem as though she did.

In the days after Harris headlined the Washington rally, Republicans mocked a real clip of her speech, with one critic dubbing her remarks a “word salad,” the AP reported at the time .

Harris says in the clip: “So I think it’s very important — as you have heard from so many incredible leaders — for us, at every moment in time, and certainly this one, to see the moment in time in which we exist and are present, and to be able to contextualize it, to understand where we exist in the history and in the moment as it relates not only to the past, but the future.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America, an abortion rights nonprofit whose president also spoke at the rally, livestreamed the original footage. It shows Harris making the “moment in time” remark, but not the “today is today” comment.

The White House’s transcript of Harris’ remarks also does not include the statement from the altered video. Harris’ appearance at the event came the same day that Biden announced their reelection bid .

It’s normal to forget a word here and there—especially when you’re put on the spot. But new research suggests that regularly struggling with finding the right words within a reasonable time could signal changes in the brain linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Meet the Experts: James Powers, MD , is professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Clifford Segil, DO , is a neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

Here’s what the study found, plus how it impacts you.

What did the study find?

Researchers recruited 125 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 90 and asked them to describe a scene in detail. Their descriptions were recorded and analyzed by artificial intelligence software to pull out elements like how fast the people spoke, how long they paused between words, and how much they varied the words they used in their descriptions.

The study participants also did a standard set of tests to measure concentration, thinking speed, and planning and carrying out tasks. That included a picture-word interference task, which had participants see pictures of everyday objects like a broom while hearing an audio clip of a word that was related (like “mop”) or that sounds similar (“groom”).

Researchers discovered that drops in these abilities—usually classified as being part of your “executive function”—were closely linked to the pace of a person’s speech, which suggests a decline in more than just trouble finding the right word.

What are the takeaways from the findings?

It’s important to note that the study didn’t find that people who speak slowly or have trouble finding words are experiencing cognitive decline. Instead, it found a link between several tests used to measure the beginning stages of cognitive decline and trouble with word-finding.

Still, “this lines up with what we have believed all along,” says James Powers, MD , professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Powers says that there are several theories on why someone may have trouble with word finding when they have Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. "It seems to be that processing speed is the issue.”

Powers stresses this, though: Struggling with word finding and speaking more slowly doesn’t mean you have dementia. “But in some people, it can be the first sign of dementia,” he says.

Clifford Segil, DO , a neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, agrees. “There are a lot of older people that talk slowly that don’t have dementia and there are a lot of younger people who talk slowly who don’t have dementia,” he says.

How can I improve my executive function as I age?

This is a little tricky. Speech and speech patterns are highly personal. It’s tough to say that if you’re, say, a slow talker, or if you tend to freeze up in social situations and forget certain words that you’re on the path to cognitive decline.

Powers say it can be tough to improve how fast you speak and how long you pause between words as you get older, but there are a few things you can try.

“Mind exercises, mind games, and memory games are definitely not harmful,” he says. While they won’t necessarily prevent cognitive decline, Powers says that they can help to “retrain” the brain.

Reading regularly can also be helpful to keep your brain engaged, Segil says.

Staying social, which requires you to think and react during conversations, can boost your brain power, too, Powers says. But Segil stresses that having actual conversations is important.

“Texting, typing, and emailing are not the same as talking,” he says.

If you’re concerned about your cognitive health, it’s a good idea to check in with a doctor. There are a lot of things that can cause you to have trouble finding your words, and getting evaluated is the best way to get to the bottom of things.

In about 48 hours, Vice President Kamala Harris went from No. 2 on the Democratic presidential ticket to the presumptive presidential nominee, after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her. Here, we fact-check some of Harris’ recent speeches — before and after Biden dropped out:

  • Harris repeated the claim that former President Donald Trump “intends to cut Social Security and Medicare,” even though he did not attempt to cut either retirement program when he was president, and he has said that he will not cut them in a second term.
  • She referred to Project 2025 — a conservative plan for deeply cutting and overhauling the federal government — as Trump’s “extreme Project 2025 agenda.” Trump has disavowed the project, which he described as “seriously extreme.”
  • The vice president repeated one of her favorite talking points when she claimed “Donald Trump openly vowed, if reelected, that he will be a dictator on Day 1.” He said he was joking when he said he wouldn’t be a dictator “except for Day 1.”
  • Harris left the misleading impression that Trump was to blame for the loss of “tens of thousands” of manufacturing jobs. The U.S. added more than 400,000 manufacturing jobs under Trump — until the economic effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic reversed all those job gains.

A former U.S. senator from California who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, Harris seemingly overnight became the Democratic Party’s last chance to stop Trump from regaining the White House.

Biden, who never recovered from a disastrous debate performance in late June, announced on July 21 that he would not seek reelection, saying it was in the “best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President.” Shortly after, Biden gave Harris his “full support and endorsement” for president.

The party quickly coalesced around Harris, who announced at a campaign event in Milwaukee on July 23: “I’m told as of this morning that we have earned the support of enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination.”

Harris needs 1,968 delegates to win the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month, and the Associated Press reported that she has the support of more than 3,000 delegates.

Project 2025, Social Security and Medicare

Since Biden dropped out and endorsed her, Harris has delivered two speeches and both times she referred to Project 2025 — a conservative plan for remaking the federal government — as Trump’s plan, even though the former president has disavowed it.

And in both speeches, she cited Project 2025 as evidence that Trump wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, even though the former president has offered no plans to do so.

Harris, Wilmington, Delaware , July 22: He and his extreme Project 2025 will weaken the middle class and bring us backward — please do note that — back to the failed trickle-down policies that gave huge tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations and made working families pay the cost; back to policies that put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block; back to policies that treat health care as only a privilege for the wealthy, instead of what we all know it should be, which is a right for every American. Harris, Milwaukee , July 23: But Donald Trump wants to take our country backward. He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously. And can you believe they put that thing in writing? Read it. It’s 900 pages. But here’s the thing. When you read it, you will see Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.

As we have said before , Trump says he has no plans to cut Social Security or Medicare.

In his four years as president, Trump did not propose cutting Social Security’s retirement benefits, and his budgets included bipartisan proposals to reduce the growth of Medicare without cutting benefits. (For more, see our February 2020 article “ Competing Claims on Trump’s Budget and Seniors ,” which details how Trump as president proposed cuts to the Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs, but not to retirement benefits.)

After leaving office, Trump has pledged not to cut Social Security, most recently on July 20 in his first joint campaign appearance with his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. “We will not cut one penny from Social Security and Medicare,” Trump said in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In January 2023, when House Republicans were discussing ways to cut government spending, Trump  said  in a video: “Under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security to help pay for Joe Biden’s reckless spending spree.”

As for Project 2025, Trump described it at his Michigan rally as “seriously extreme.” He added, “I don’t know anything about it. I don’t want to know anything about it.”

Project 2025 lays out “four goals and principles” for Medicare “reform,” but there is nothing in the 900-plus page document that calls for cutting Social Security, which the authors of the project call a “ myth .”

Harris and the Democrats link the project and its agenda to Trump because, as CNN has reported , there are more than 100 people involved in the project who have worked in the Trump administration. Prominent figures such as Mark Meadows , who was Trump’s chief of staff, and Stephen Miller , a top aide who was involved in setting major immigration policy, are associated with conservative groups that advised the project.

Project 2025, which mentions Trump hundreds of times, includes concepts that Trump supports, including — as Harris alluded to — cutting business taxes and rewriting the nation’s health care laws. But it also proposes things that Trump did not do when he was president, such as setting just two individual tax brackets of 15% and 30% (down from seven) and eliminating or transforming entire government agencies.

There is no telling what parts of Project 2025 Trump would implement, if elected. But Project 2025 is not his “agenda” or “plan,” as Harris said.

Trump’s Dictator Remarks

In recent speeches this month, including in Philadelphia on July 13 , Harris repeated a popular talking point that “Donald Trump openly vowed, if reelected, that he will be a dictator on Day 1.”

Harris was referring to a comment that Trump made at a Fox News town hall in December. At the event, Sean Hannity gave Trump the chance to respond to critics who warned that Trump would be a dictator if elected to a second term. “Under no circumstances, you are promising America tonight, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody,” Hannity said . Trump responded, “Except for Day 1.”

Trump went on to say, “We’re closing the border. And we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.”

Trump later claimed he was joking with Hannity. In a Feb. 4 interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump said: “It was with Sean Hannity, and we were having fun, and I said, ‘I’m going to be a dictator,’ because he asked me, ‘Are you really going to be a dictator?’ I said, ‘Absolutely, I’m going to be a dictator for one day.’ I didn’t say from Day 1.”

Trump repeated his intention to close the border and drill for oil. “That’s all. And then after that, I’m not going to be a dictator,” Trump told Bartiromo, claiming his “dictator” comment was “said in jest.”

Manufacturing Jobs

In a July 18 speech in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Harris left the misleading impression that Trump was to blame for the loss of “tens of thousands” of manufacturing jobs.

“So, Donald Trump tries to claim he brought back American manufacturing,” Harris said. “The fact is, under Donald Trump, America lost tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs.”

The fact is, those jobs were lost during the global COVID-19 pandemic. As of February 2020, the U.S. had added 414,000 manufacturing jobs under Trump, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But then the economic effects of the pandemic took hold. In April 2020 alone, the U.S. lost 1.3 million manufacturing jobs.

Most of those jobs came back. But at the end of Trump’s four years, the U.S. had lost 178,000 manufacturing jobs since January 2017, when he took office.

Under Biden, the rest of the manufacturing jobs returned and then some. Since January 2021, the U.S. has added  762,000 manufacturing jobs .

Clarification, July 25: We have updated this story to clarify that while Trump did not propose cuts to Social Security’s retirement benefits as president, he did propose cutting the Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs.

Write a Book, No Matter What

As an early academic, it will not only help you create a scholarly identity and enrich your teaching, but it will also allow you to shape the career you want, writes En Li.

Writing the first book is time-consuming. So, you may wonder, why should people still write one—especially if a book is not required for tenure at their institution? Many people may advise you to just try to publish the best two or three chapters from your dissertation.

But I say instead: Do write a book, no matter what, because it can give you the freedom to shape your career the way you want. In this essay, I hope to re-examine the general advice about writing and publishing the first book in the specific context of an academic’s early career: why is it important to write the first book, what makes it so difficult and how best to do it.

After graduating from my Ph.D. program in Chinese history in December 2015, I started my first job at a regional university in the Midwest, where I worked for seven years. Due to its heavy teaching load, the job didn’t officially have a book as requirement for tenure. During the first three years, I published three peer-reviewed articles, with one from my dissertation.

In 2018, however, I took a research trip to Beijing and started revising my dissertation manuscript. I turned in a proposal with two sample chapters in June 2020 during the initial stage of the pandemic. I received two rounds of feedback, one from informal readers and the editor, the other from external reviewers whom the press chose. Each time, I spent about a year making the revisions without taking major research leave, except several course releases, including a one-course release when giving birth to my second child in 2021. Finally, in 2023, the Harvard University Asia Center published my book, which was about a type of organized lottery in which people bet money on the surnames of people who would pass the civil and military examinations in 19th-century China.

Like most people I know, I found the writing process long and challenging. Indeed, it is so intense and detail-oriented that it is almost like a testing ground to prove one’s physical and intellectual fitness. So why should we write? Many people describe the first book as a “tenure book,” which means you need to write a book to get tenure. But I discovered that the reward of writing a book goes well beyond gaining tenure at a single institution.

Revising a dissertation into a book provides a full spectrum of writing and publishing experiences. It enabled me to discover through my research a much broader historiographic framework and carry a consistent argument across several chapters. I got to develop a relationship with an experienced editor for more than four years and learn from the way he worked. I also experienced the commonly encountered encouraging reviewer No. 1 and the critical reviewer No. 2. In addition to content development, I also learned to index a book, design a book cover, work with a copy editor and make maps with a professional cartographer.

Since the book appeared, I’ve had the opportunity to discuss it in talks, keynotes and podcasts. I’ve seen it take on its own life and be discussed in different contexts beyond my original plan.

As William Germano describes in From Dissertation to Book , a scholar’s life is ultimately a writing life. Although scholarship can be defined in more than one way in today’s society, “a life of thinking, however, is incomplete unless all that celebration is turn into something outlives the moment of its creation.”

Working on a major book project connected me to my field. I was the only East Asian historian at a teaching-focused college, and my research was not something that would be mentioned in daily conversations with colleagues, so I appreciated all the communications about the book with editors and reviewers. Writing itself establishes its own rhythm—I had to take time to think and respond, so I did not feel lost in other responsibilities. Plus, being busy with a book project in mind helped me let go of other obsessions. “Yes,” I would tell myself, “the class did not go well this morning, but let’s move on and write.” It was like a sweet little secret that would warm my heart.

Better researchers make better teachers. By researching and writing the book, I was able to share the exciting stuff that I was reading with my students. Also, having an active research agenda made me a more confident teacher and sharpened my thoughts. In addition, being in the writing process myself, I learned to be more empathetic when I commented and coached students’ writing projects, as well as more purposeful when I designed those assignments.

The experience shaped my vision about what I want to do with my career. I want to write more, and I want to share my research and writing experiences with students, especially graduate students. This book gave me the confidence to make it happen. In 2022, the year that I was up for tenure, I decided to go on the job market again and landed my current job at a more research-oriented university in Texas.

Thus, a book is not only a learning experience, core scholarly identity and enrichment to teaching. Most essentially, it can provide the freedom to shape the career you want. Even if I had decided to stay at my previous institution, I would have had much more confidence in my standing among my fellow historians. And having a book listed on your CV especially helps if you seek a position somewhere new. In this increasingly competitive job market, meeting the rigorous external standards required to be published by a major university press usually better attests to your scholarly bona fides than subjective recommendations. So while many people may advise you about writing your way up, it is more important to write your way out, broadening your potential academic career beyond a single institution.

Of course, the earlier you are in that career, the more difficult it is to write. Those first years are usually uncertain and turbulent, allowing little opportunity to write a first book. For scholars who publish more than one book, the first one always takes longer.

Also, having worked in two different places, I realize how much the type of institution also matters—how much support for writing you receive in more research-oriented institutions when it comes to the number of conferences you can attend, the length of research leave you can take and the likelihood you can hire research assistants. Such R-1 jobs are limited, however, and few people obtain one at the beginning of their careers.

Thus, the earlier you are in your career, the more likely you land a teaching-focused job and various contingent positions. You teach a lot, you move a lot and you spend a lot of time looking for the next job. The more you do so, the less time you have for writing, the less likely you can get a book published and the less likely you’ll get a different job. In From Dissertation to Book , Germano acknowledges that turning dissertation to book can be “the most difficult hurdle to jump” in a scholar’s career—and the most ironic aspect is that the people who need to write the most probably are the least able to write. As Claudia Goldin, a Nobel Prize winner in economics, observes , certain jobs are “greedy”—they demand people to work overtime and put in long hours. Both writing and teaching are greedy, especially for new instructors.

So what can you do, especially when you cannot increase the total amount of time, to approach the use of time more strategically? Here are a few lessons, based on my own experience.

Learn to teach very well during the first several years. Many people recommend cutting corners in teaching to maximize the time to write, but I do not. Teaching is part of the job, and if you cut corners of teaching, you cut corners on a very important skill set. During the first few years I was working, I took time to attend many teaching workshops that my institution offered. I observed all my colleagues’ classes in a small department, and my colleagues observed my classes and I took their feedback to heart. I also took notes and analyzed students’ feedback every semester.

Later, as teaching became easier, I was able to devote more time to writing. And I discovered that learning how to be an effective teacher can improve your writing in various ways. Writing in general is a craft of storytelling, and you are trained to be a storyteller in class every day. You learn to engage a diverse body of students and address questions in different classes beyond your own field. You come up with a few takeaways to end each class before students rush to lunch, which turns out to be good practice for summarizing a book chapter. And that’s not to mention how much broadly reading good books and being exposed to different subject matters, theories and methodologies when you prepare for classes can contribute to your writing.

Join a writing group and be realistic about it. My institution did not have a writing group. I initiated one with one of my colleagues in 2018 when I started to revise my dissertation. We met once a month for 90 minutes—first in person and then online during the pandemic. About 10 people from different disciplines came regularly to discuss their writing progress and strategies, as well as to workshop each other’s writings. It was especially helpful to work with people who shared a similar teaching load and were realistic about the writing progress.

Always write before teaching. If you cannot increase the amount of time, focus on the quality of the time. The No. 1 rule I’ve followed for many years has been to write first thing in the morning. After my first child, I wrote between 6 and 7 a.m. Now, with two children, I write between 5 and 6 a.m. before everyone else gets up. I’ve found it is especially important for me to write before teaching so I can continue to think about those ideas for the rest of the day. Sometimes, even if I have only five minutes before class, I will use it to revise an outline or to add a footnote.

Determine the time when you do your own most productive writing, which might be quite different than mine. Joli Jensen has called it “the A energy ,” and Cathy Mazak has called it “ the tiger time ,” both referring to the best energy you have during the day. You should also write consistently every day. Writing is no different from practicing music and sport—regardless of how talented you are, you must create the environment to practice.

Play the hand you have. Writing a book is a long process, and it’s especially hard to discern much progress in the early stages. It’s tempting to rush it or to feel bad about not doing enough. I’ve had to remind myself that I only have so much time and can only do a few things well in life. I did not have a whole year of research leave, for instance, so I applied for a course release here and there, and some of them were granted. In pursuing those small ways to carve out time to write, I learned to be honest and realistic.

I’ll sum up with an analogy. My first book was about gambling, so I regularly taught my students to play mah-jongg in class. In some ways, writing the first book is like playing mah-jongg. Very few players get promising tiles to make a winning set right away. The earlier you are at a game, the more random tiles you get. So you need to play the hand you have and take and discard your tiles strategically. You need to be patient and wait for your winning set.

Similarly, when writing a book, it may take several years, and you may never be in the optimal position to write. But the reassuring thing is that, like a mah-jongg game, you don’t need just one best set to win. So, again, I encourage you to go ahead and write a book, as it can allow you to ultimately make your own winning set.

Read Obama's full statement on Biden dropping out

Former President Barack Obama issued a statement on Sunday afternoon, hours after President Biden announced he was dropping out of the presidential race .

Obama weighed in on his former vice president's unprecedented decision to step aside for what Mr. Biden said was the good of the Democratic Party and the country. Notably, Obama did not name or endorse Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee, even though Mr. Biden said she had his "full support and endorsement."

"Joe Biden has been one of America's most consequential presidents, as well as a dear friend and partner to me. Today, we've also been reminded — again — that he's a patriot of the highest order.   Sixteen years ago, when I began my search for a vice president, I knew about Joe's remarkable career in public service. But what I came to admire even more was his character — his deep empathy and hard-earned resilience; his fundamental decency and belief that everyone counts.   Since taking office, President Biden has displayed that character again and again. He helped end the pandemic, created millions of jobs, lowered the cost of prescription drugs, passed the first major piece of gun safety legislation in 30 years, made the biggest investment to address climate change in history, and fought to ensure the rights of working people to organize for fair wages and benefits. Internationally, he restored America's standing in the world, revitalized NATO, and mobilized the world to stand up against Russian aggression in Ukraine.   More than that, President Biden pointed us away from the four years of chaos, falsehood, and division that had characterized Donald Trump's administration. Through his policies and his example, Joe has reminded us of who we are at our best — a country committed to old-fashioned values like trust and honesty, kindness and hard work; a country that believes in democracy, rule of law, and accountability; a country that insists that everyone, no matter who they are, has a voice and deserves a chance at a better life.   This outstanding track record gave President Biden every right to run for re-election and finish the job he started. Joe understands better than anyone the stakes in this election — how everything he has fought for throughout his life, and everything that the Democratic Party stands for, will be at risk if we allow Donald Trump back in the White House and give Republicans control of Congress.   I also know Joe has never backed down from a fight. For him to look at the political landscape and decide that he should pass the torch to a new nominee is surely one of the toughest in his life. But I know he wouldn't make this decision unless he believed it was right for America. It's a testament to Joe Biden's love of country — and a historic example of a genuine public servant once again putting the interests of the American people ahead of his own that future generations of leaders will do well to follow.   We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead. But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges. I believe that Joe Biden's vision of a generous, prosperous, and united America that provides opportunity for everyone will be on full display at the Democratic Convention in August. And I expect that every single one of us are prepared to carry that message of hope and progress forward into November and beyond.   For now, Michelle and I just want to express our love and gratitude to Joe and Jill for leading us so ably and courageously during these perilous times — and for their commitment to the ideals of freedom and equality that this country was founded on."
