What is Culinary Arts?

Culinary Arts is t-he art of preparing food, often in conjunction with other aspects of food-service management. Professionals in this field prepare food that not only tastes good but looks good as well. This requires knowledge about how to use color, flavor and design principles to make food look appetizing. Culinary Arts professionals also need detailed knowledge about production systems (e.g., how to raise vegetables) and process systems (e.g., how to cut meat). Some may even consider culinary arts as the art of cooking and telling stories through foods; it’s a form of creative expression that can be appreciated by all five senses.

How Culinary Arts Became One of the Most Valuable Skills To Have

It is interesting to see how the culinary arts have become one of the most valuable skills to have in today’s market. There are a number of reasons for this, but it mostly boils down to the fact that there is a lot of interest in food and food culture these days, and more people than ever before want to learn more about cooking. The rise of reality TV shows like Top Chef and MasterChef has made people hungry for more knowledge about cooking. Social media has also played a big role in amplifying this trend: Instagram and Snapchat users follow chefs on social media sharing their recipes and cooking tips with followers across the globe. It’s no wonder that we’ve seen an increase in demand for chefs over the last decade.

The food industry is one of the largest industries in the world. It’s also one of the most influential industries because people are eating three times a day, seven days a week. People are eating more now than they ever have before, and there are so many options for them to choose from. The culinary arts have had an enormous impact on this industry because they have introduced dishes from all over the world. Furthermore, the food industry has been influenced by the culinary arts for centuries. In ancient times, people cooked their food over an open fire and used spices to season their dishes. Fast forward to today, and we have a much more complex system of cooking. Chefs have a wide range of culinary tools at their disposal, from the humble salt shaker to high-tech sous vide machines.

Popularity of Culinary Jobs

Interestingly, culinary jobs are some of the top rated and most popular jobs in the world. There are countless opportunities, and there is a strong need for culinary professionals and new culinary school graduates. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that employment for chefs, head cooks, and cook supervisors will grow by 10% in the next few years. Hence it is no surprise that the culinary industry employs a large number of people. In the US alone, there are over 1.4 million people who work in restaurants and food service establishments. These jobs typically come with a higher salary for those who qualify as skilled employees, and the industry also offers many job opportunities for those who may not have a college degree.

Careers Paths for Culinary Graduates

Careers in the culinary world are plentiful, but it is important to be aware of the different paths one can take.

  • Executive chef – Executive chefs are expected to oversee the kitchen of a restaurant, hotel, or other establishment that serves food. They manage the food and beverage costs and decide what types of dishes will be prepared. They also need to know how to provide customer service and interact with staff members. Only very large and established restaurants employ an executive chef.
  • Sous chef – A Sous Chef directly reports to the executive chef and has a hands-on role in the kitchen. They are also tasked with the day-to-day activities that are necessary to run the kitchen. Interestingly, the term “sous” stands for “second” or second-in-command.
  • Restaurant manager – The primary duty of a restaurant manager is to make sure the restaurant is clean and well-maintained. They also need to make sure that the kitchen staff has what they need to prepare food, ensure that all food meets health codes, and manage day-to-day operations with little to no discrepancies.
  • Butcher – Butchers are specialists in the preparation of animal carcasses, game, and meat. They also often provide specialty cuts of meat like sausages and hams. Butchers use a variety of instruments to butcher the animal carcasses into cuts that are more easily handled for cooking or sale, such as knives, saws, or shears.
  • Sommelier- A Sommelier is a wine expert. They are responsible for pairing food with wine to enhance the flavors of both. The Sommelier is typically the person that recommends wines to their customers at restaurants or bars, but this can also be done through a phone call, social media post, email, etc.
  • Baker – The duty of a baker in culinary arts is to create the dough for breads, cakes, and other pastries. They are responsible for baking these goods by following recipes to the letter, while monitoring the dough’s temperature and consistency. Bakers are also responsible for ensuring that their products are properly prepared before being shipped out to customers.
  • Pastry cook – Pastry cooks oversee the baking and decorating of sweet, savory pastries, cakes and other desserts. They may also be responsible for creating recipes and testing new dishes.
  • Caterer / Banquet cook – These professionals are tasked with preparing food and drink usually for large numbers of people such as for a wedding, business meeting or school events.

How to Prepare for a Career in Culinary Arts?

In order to prepare for a career as a Culinary Arts Professional, it is important to be well-rounded in all aspects of food preparation and know how to work as part of a team. It is also important to have knowledge of the ingredients and techniques used in the industry. Other important tips to remember includes:

  • Enroll in a culinary school – A culinary school is an excellent option for those who are looking to land a career in the culinary arts. It is an intensive education that can provide students with the skills they need to become successful chefs. Some of the things that students will learn in classes are cooking techniques, menu planning, food culture, and more.
  • Educate yourself about the culinary arts – If you have dreamed about being a chef or owning your own restaurant someday, this is the first step toward your goal. Doing research and exploring opportunities is essential to achieving success.
  • Explore different types of cuisine – In order to be a successful cook, you’ll need to know the basics of cooking and how to prepare a wide variety of dishes. With so many different styles of cuisine available, it can be difficult to choose where to start. As a future culinary pro, you’ll need to explore as much as possible in order to learn what flavours work best with your skills and interests.
  • Mentally and physically prepare yourself – To become a successful chef, you need to be able to take the heat. Mentally prepare yourself by developing an eye for detail and taking pride in your work. Physically prepare yourself by getting into shape as many careers in this field are physically demanding.

What is the Typical Day in a Chef’s Life?

A chef’s typical day starts at 5:00-6:00 AM to ensure that they have food prepared by the time the restaurant opens. They then work from 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with a 30-minute break for lunch, then work again from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Moreover, chefs tirelessly prepare dishes without compromising the quality or taste throughout the day. Other responsibilities may include doing research on new recipes, mastering classic culinary recipes, designing cooking plans for both people with allergies or who are vegan or vegetarian, setting the menus for the day, taking care of kitchen duties, and overseeing the tasks and duties of other junior cooks. In a nutshell, it is not easy to become a chef. Moreover, the road to becoming a competent chef is long and hard, but also rewarding at the same time.

This essay will demonstrate how styles in cuisine began as isolated classifications, according to country of ethnicity on the Eastern hemisphere.  Moreover, when the Western hemisphere began to develop years later, a composite occurred, since citizens had the advantage to pick-and-choose amongst educated and developed styles before choosing the best of his or her choice.

Introductions

Related careers in Culinary Arts include several positions, including the careers that are taught in colleges and trade schools right alongside several that are not.  For example, a dishwasher or waitress would not need to be educated in Culinary Arts school.  In culinary arts schools, students learn the basics of food science, nutrition, chemistry and food production, though, more than customer service and hospitality.

For example, the expeditor or person responsible for garnishing the plates before sending them out to the restaurant table with the waiter or waitress would be considered a related career in culinary arts, while the main chef or head cook watching over the ovens and friers would also be a career in culinary arts.  This is an example of the the broad array of jobs in the industry.  However, my focus will be strictly on the foods that are served; in particular, the nativities of the varying categories of cuisine (McBride, Kate. ed. The Professional Chef, 8th ed., Hoboken, New Jersey: John Wiley & Sons.).

In culinary arts schools, the student will spend great amounts of time studying the chemical reactions that take place when a certain ingredient is heated, boiled or frozen, and how that will affect the total outcome of the dish.  This essay, however, will focus on the actual product, the types of food that are commonly served, and the distinguishing characteristics of each type (Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, AZ  Copyright 1997 Cahners Business Information, Inc.).

The applicable related careers in Culinary Arts vary according to the type of food served are what can be completely different also.  For example, a consumer would not expect to find a sushi chef in a Chinese restaurant.    Therefore, a Japanese sushi chef would be a completely different job than a Chinese white-rice boiler (soy).  For another example, a customer would not expect to look on any reflection of Le Cordon Bleu (“the blue ribbon” in French) within a Caribbean restaurant.  In this essay, I will place focus on the term according to the type of food served, alongside some native characteristics of each (Caribbean Food Encyclopedia. Article from Encyclopedia of Food and Culture.  HYPERLINK “http://www.ifood.tv/network/caribbean” http://www.ifood.tv/network/caribbean. Web. 15 November 2011).

A culinarion is the person responsible for skillfully and visually creating a plate of food that tastes as good as it looks.  Unless spoken by a professional in the field or a student of culinary arts, Culinarion is an outdated term.  Currently a culinarion is recognized by the title of cook, or chef, or in some settings a food preparer, or sous-chef, short-order cook, cordon bleu cook, informal cookie, possibly a pastry chef, or even chef de cuisine.  Cook and chef are by far the most used terms (Caribbean Food Encyclopedia. Article from Encyclopedia of Food and Culture.  HYPERLINK “http://www.ifood.tv/network/caribbean” http://www.ifood.tv/network/caribbean. Web. 15 November 2011).

“Culinary Arts” is also a science, because the culinarion is required to have a knowledge of the science of food and an understanding of diet and nutrition. These five pages of clarity and definitions would be the most persuasive manner by which to signify the qualities of each (Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, AZ  Copyright 1997 Cahners Business Information, Inc.).

Nativity, Food types:

First off, Chinese food and Japanese food are not the same type of food.  Sushi is Japanese, or native to Japan.  Anything under the title of Zhe or Zhejiang is Chinese, or native to China.  Dishes featuring white rice are Chinese; rice with egg, green peas, and thinly sliced ham are Japanese. Also, Chifa, Filipino, Pakistani, Szechuan cuisine, Sichuan cuisine, or Korean dishes are Chinese in origin.  Yellow bean sauce or yellow wine sauce means the preparation is Chinese. However, when referring to a type of food as a type of Ramen (noodles and broth), the dish could be either Japanese or Chinese.  Chuka directly means Chinese-style Japanese food, or in some cases is regarded as Japanese-style Chinese food (McBride, Kate. ed. The Professional Chef, 8th ed., Hoboken, New Jersey: John Wiley & Sons.).

Indian foods would indeed indicate an Asian cuisine, but when one says Asian foods, what typically comes to mind are the food styles as stated in the previous paragraph.  When a person says a dish featuring lentils or curry, though, we immediately know that person is talking about Indian foods (Miller, Hanna. American Pie. American Heritage Encyclopedia. 2006.).  “Hindu beliefs and culture have played an influential role in the evolution of Indian cuisine” (Steward. Books.google.com. ISBN 9788125003250. Web. 15 November 2011).  This explains why the thousands of recipes available, though tastefully articulate, revolve around what seems like the same two dozen ingredients (Hanna Miller, American Pie. American Heritage Encyclopedia. 2006).

Regarding foods of the West coast, however, foods tend to bring on a greater variety of nativities.  For instance, pizza was initially recognized as an Italian food, but did not gain the notoriety as being a fast food enterprise until it took off in the United States.  In fact, the health benefits of pizza did not become surpassed by the health criticisms until the fast-food explosion of this past forty years (Hanna Miller, American Pie. American Heritage Encyclopedia. 2006).

For another example, Caribbean foods are a combination of African, Indian, American Indian, or Amerindian, right alongside Chinese, Dutch, French, East Indian, and Spanish styles of cooking (Caribbean Food Encyclopedia. Article from Encyclopedia of Food and Culture.  HYPERLINK “http://www.ifood.tv/network/caribbean” http://www.ifood.tv/network/caribbean. Web. 15 November 2011). Evidently, since the majority of these Asian cultures have recipes and the like dating back 5000 years or more, and the recorded cultures of the Western hemisphere dates back merely hundreds of years, of course the recipes seem a more worldly combination of these cooking styles.

Caribbean cuisine follows a similar thematic as the Northern American Nations.  However, Rice and Beans — arroz y habas, arroz con habichuelas, arroz con frijoles, arroz e feijão or feijão com arroz (Spanish), diri ak pwa in Haitian Creole (Portuguese), Avas kon arroz or Avikas kon arroz (Judaeo-Spanish) — seem almost like a brand created throughout the Caribbean, and  the Central and into the Southern American nations, like Brazilian cuisine; Mexico would be the only Northern American country where rice and beans is observed as basically a staple to the diet.  Mediterranean styles, however, featuring Italian-Spanish and Arabic methodologies, tend to dominate more Southern American nations the father south one travels.

In conclusion, though there are several obscure careers relative to culinary arts, the focal part of this art — the food — is relative to several different domains.  However, the more Eastern one travels (namely Asian nations, for this account), the more native and localized the tastes and flavors will seem.  When one heads north-west or south-west, however, several separate nativities within the food spectrum begin to be discovered.

At its core, attending a culinary arts program will allow you to learn the skills and knowledge that are required of a chef in the kitchen, which includes not only knowing how to cook but also how to create new dishes, how to keep the kitchen safe, how to run the kitchen efficiently and more. While this is important, you could also argue that some of this can be learned by working your way up in a restaurant instead - to an extent, of course.

Reasons to Study the Culinary Arts

However, there's more to the culinary arts than just learning how to be a professional chef. Studying the culinary arts can help improve your life in many ways, and can allow you to improve the lives of the people you end up cooking for as well. The following are just a few of the reasons why you should study the culinary arts:

  • Learn to appreciate cooking as an art form : Preparing food isn't just about sustenance or about helping people enjoy what they eat (although those are certainly two reasons to prepare food for people), it's also about sharing art with people. The way you plate your dishes is an art form in itself, something that your customers can take pleasure in looking at. Then there's the way that you combine aromas and tastes to create different feelings, in the same way that paintings use colors and form to incite different emotions. By studying culinary arts, you'll learn how to appreciate food as an art form. This, in turn, will result in you putting more care into the food you create, and potentially allow for more fulfillment from watching customers enjoy your food.
  • Learn to appreciate different cultures: Food is closely intertwined with culture. Think about all the different foods that are available from all over the world and how people often pass down family recipes from one person to another. By studying culinary arts, you'll learn how different cultures prepared different types of foods. This will give you a much greater appreciation for different cultures, which in turn helps to build empathy for people in general. You can share your knowledge of different cultures with your customers by implementing various ingredients or cooking techniques used by different cultures in your dishes, thereby helping to spread an appreciation for different styles of cooking. This is an incredibly effective way to get people to open up to new things, especially if they haven't been exposed to different cultures.
  • Learn how you can encourage a healthy lifestyle : Good culinary arts programs will teach you about nutrition. Many chefs these days have emphasized the importance of creating delicious dishes that are actually healthy in order to promote nutrition to their customers. It's why many restaurants offer vegan options these days. Some restaurants, such as farm-to-table restaurants, also practice sustainability and environmental responsibility. By act of being farm-to-table, they spread awareness for those important subjects to their customers.
  • Have the ability to travel the world: One of the advantages of going to a culinary school instead of working your way up in a local restaurant is that a culinary arts degree could give you the opportunity to seek chef positions all over the world. Not only can traveling the world provide some enlightening experiences that will help to shape your view of life as well as your thoughts about food, but you'll be able to share your personal experiences with the people you meet throughout the world as well.
  • Learn from many professionals in your field : Instead of just learning from a single chef at a restaurant, you'll be taught by numerous culinary professionals, all with their own unique experiences and skill sets, which they will share with you. This allows for a more well-rounded view on the culinary arts that will have a positive influence on your future.

Studying culinary arts will help you expand your horizons in many ways. Not only will it help you become a professional chef, it will give you a deeper appreciation for food as culture, food as art, your health and more, all of which you can pass on to your customers through your own culinary efforts.

Tips for Writing Your CIA Application Essays

Anatole Sullivan

Writing college essays can seem overwhelming. In fact, many students will put them off as long as possible. We get it.

Potential students talking to a Culinary Institute of America admissions counselor.

That’s why we asked CIA Admissions Director Michelle Mullooly to share some of her best essay-writing tips with you.

  • Relax and remember you can do this! We mean it! Our essay is just a way for us to get to know you better. Any worry you have is just proof that this is important to you. We appreciate that! Your response only needs to be between 200-500 words. Chances are when you sit down to write it, you’ll want to use more words than that. That’s ok with us!
  • Be yourself and use your resources: There is no right or wrong answer. This is an essay about you! Be authentic and tell us all the great things about you! Ask your family and friends for input or reminders of times when you excelled or used your leadership qualities.
  • It’s OK to brag: This is your chance to tell us about your best qualities and achievements. If you don’t tell us, we won’t know. Take pride in the person you have become and share it with us. We won’t think you’re bragging; we will be excited to have you join our college.
  • Just do it: Spend a little bit of time thinking about the topic and then just start writing. Don’t overthink it. It will be easier than you realize. Once you’re finished, read it over. Double check for typos or misspelled words.
  • Call us for help! Throughout the application process, you always have a personal admissions counselor available to assist you with your questions. Feel free to e-mail us or call us anytime if you get stuck . That’s what we are here for!
