How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated: January 4, 2020

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

  • These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

  • A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

Step 3 Write about a memorable moment.

  • For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

Step 4 Create an outline...

  • For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
  • Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
  • Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

  • Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

  • Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

  • For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

  • Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

  • Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
  • Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
  • Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

  • Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

Tips for Writing a "What I Did on Vacation" Essay

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

If your family vacation involved something more serious, think about one of these topics:

  • The Love I Left Behind in (insert place)
  • Saying Good-Bye to (insert person or place)
  • Exploring (place's) Secrets
  • An Emotional Trip

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

Holidays are an incredible time for us to visit hilly destinations with the family. The summer season is an excellent time for us to take stress-free excursions and get close to nature, which we are unable to do in our busy schedules for the entire year. Last year I visited my grandparents and stayed there for 15 days. The cool thing about the summer holidays is discovering and creating new things in the village. How to Write a Summer Vacation Essay

Summer break is a great time to kick back, relax and enjoy yourself and, if you’re lucky, to go on an awesome trip! But how can you translate your amazing vacation into a narrative essay for English class or work it to fit a common application prompt? Here’s some tips to help you out:

Save Mementos From Your Summer

Even if you’re not the sentimental type, make sure to document your summer travels. Take pictures, write diary entries, save train stubs. This is the best way to ensure that you’ll remember your summer well enough to look back and write about it later.

Write an Outline Before Writing Your Essay

Regardless of whether you spent your summer break in Madison, Wisconsin or Madrid, Spain, you should plan out what you’re going to write before diving in. Make a list of what you’ve done over the summer so that you can later narrow down a focus for the essay itself. Keep in mind that the best essay topics aren’t always on the most exciting activities an essay about getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport on the way to Denver could work better than an essay on hiking the Grand Canyon and looking out at the incredible view.

Be Specific

Since you’re going to keep a record of your trip and come up with an outline before writing your essay, you should be able to put some detail into your essay. Be as specific as possible when it comes to your word choice. If you’re talking about some gelato that you ate in Italy, don’t say that it was “delicious.” Instead, say that it was “creamy and chocolatey, with a note of vanilla.”

Focus on Feelings About Your Trip, Not What You Did

If you spent the summer on the beach in Cape Cod, you shouldn’t write about what you did. You should write instead about how you felt while there. An essay that reads “I went to beach, then had lobster for dinner” is not quite as exciting as one that goes, “As I went for a walk on the beach, I thought about how lucky I was to be able to enjoy nature.” Feelings translate better into text than events, and you should try to place those feelings into context.

Stick to Writing About a Small Moment

With any essay you write especially a short one it’s important to focus a narrow moment in time. Don’t write about your entire week in Paris. Instead, write about the moment you got lost in the city at midnight and fumbled your way home in the dark. You don’t have to pick a particularly glamorous moment from your trip, but you should pick one that meant something to you.

Edit Your Essay Carefully

The shorter the essay, the more important precision is. Regardless of length, make sure to carefully read over what you’ve written to make sure every sentence conveys the message you most want displayed. The editing process matters just as much as the writing process, even if it seems less so.

A Long Essay  on “How I Spend My Summer Vacation”

Summer vacation is one of my favorite times of the year as almost every year me and my family make plans for long vacations. Summer is an ideal time for us to go on stress-free trips and get closer to nature, something we are unable to do throughout the rest of the year due to our hectic schedules.

We generally go to meet our grandparents or go on a trip with family and friends. This year, I went on a trip to the hill stations of Ooty along with my parents, grandparents and cousins. The most important thing about these vacations is the time spent with family during these vacations we make life-long memories.

We started the vacation by going to the native village of our grandparents, which is around 100 km away from the city in which we reside. My cousins and our extended family also joined us in our ancestral home. We then took a train to Ooty.

The train ride was filled with laughter and songs, and I greatly enjoyed the ride. We got to see the beautiful landscapes of India on our way to the destination. We reached our Ooty in the evening. It is a small hill station with beautiful natural scenery and vegetation.

I started the next day with an early morning walk with my grandparents and cousins. I then ate my breakfast after which the whole family traveled around the town. I learnt about the birds and trees of the hill stations. During nights I and my cousins would hear stories from my grandparents. I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. At the end of my trip, we went shopping to take some mementoes to my hometown.

Despite the fact that my summer vacation was longer, the trip was by far the most memorable experience I had at that time. I am very grateful for the time I spent with my family. During the vacation, I not only learnt new things about the natural and cultural heritage of the place but also had a great time with my family. I like summer vacations and have the satisfaction of knowing that I have utilized my time productively.

Short Essay on My Plans for Summer Vacation 150 Words in English

Short Essay on My Plans for Summer Vacation is usually given to classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Summer vacation is the longest and the most awaited vacation in an academic year. To me, summer vacay is a portal that offers the best opportunity to meet companions and have an exuberant time filled with happiness.

My apartment complex comprises numerous children around my age group, and each of our parents cheerfully allows us to partake in various fun yet practical activities that involve outdoor exercises. This summer break, I wanted to play football regularly with my buddies. We are a group of friends who play football in a ground nearby to our complex. We even play a few other necessary outdoor sports that require no such equipment like hide and seek and tag.

This summer vacay would be amusing and super fun as I will not be taking a summer detour with my parents due to their busy schedule. However, my parents have promised to take me to my grandparents’ place in the mountains’ foot. The lush green and calm, breezy atmosphere is the best place to drift away into the world of my books and comics.

Summer break is the most exciting period of the year since there is no need to wake up early in the morning and go to school or do piled homework and projects. It is quite a refreshing time for me, and my siblings and this summer will be a perfect get-away to a fun learning summer camp. Summer vacation is the most awaited break, and it is a sigh of relief when the final term examinations are completed. This year’s summer plan is to engage me in various fun and adventurous activities to relax my body and mind.

I will engage myself in Yoga as it has been the best of my interest to increase my concentration power. Yoga strengthens the mind and body and sets a person up for wellness, and it’s something more than physical exercise and comprises a spiritual and meditative core. Yoga presents numerous benefits, and various organizations organize Yoga classes every year. Additionally, Yoga makes a person flexible, and since I dream of engaging myself in ballet, Yoga will help achieve my dreams. Most importantly, Yoga teaches discipline, and I hope that these classes help me become a better and improvised version of myself and my overall development.

Introduction

Summer vacation marks the vacation itch and dreams about beach and adventure trips. In a fun and productive manner, summer vacations must pass by with a bit of planning to ensure a memorable and creative summer break. We can engage in several activities during summer vacations and indulge in skill improvement activities to improve our personalities.

Learning Musical Instrument

My biggest summer gig is music, and this summer break, I decided to learn a musical instrument to expand my love of music. However, I wish to discover two of my favourite instruments- keyboard and guitar. Beethoven has always been my inspiration to take up the keyboard as my first musical instrument and camp rock have been why I aspire to learn guitar. These two musical instruments will help me improve my skills thereon.

Learning Dance

Dance unwinds and refreshes your mind and body, teaches teamwork, increases the focus, and acquires improvisational skills. I love dancing and love to watch dance performances, either by a group, an immature dancer, or a professional. I enjoy dancing and never lose an opportunity to dance even though I lack professionalism and my dance is immature. This is why I decided to take dance lessons during my summer break by a professional instructor at a convenient time.

Visiting My Grandparents

The first place topping the summer bucket list is the visit to my grandparents’ house. My grandparents stay at the ancestral home in a small rural area, where my grandfather looks after the cultivation of crops and selling products in the market. I am very close to my grandparents and long to be with them and seek their advice and stories.

This summer break, I would be visiting my ancestral house to spend a few weeks of my summer break with my beloved old grandparents. I get to visit my grandparents only during summer breaks and therefore, this time of the year is the most exciting period. The ancestral house is located at a fascinating and beautiful scenic place. The weather, food, atmosphere, and the close-knit community are different from the city’s busy and noisy streets.

Another exciting thing about this summer break is catching up with my old friends from my grandparents’ village. I have always had a wonderful time with my old friends visiting the farms and fields, eating raw veggies and fruits, swimming across the lake and whatnot.

Playing Traditional Games

Another exciting plan that includes my summer trip to my grandparent’s house is playing traditional village games with my old friends. Outdoor games like Gilli-danda, hide and seek, kho-kho, and kabaddi have been entertaining the village children for a very long time. I am more excited to play these games with friends, and there are times that I have lost track of time playing these games. These traditional games make you happy and excited and provide good physical exercise and good health.

Summer break is the most lively time of the year as it centred on my ancestral house, grandparents, traditional games, and village friends. I have decided that I would love to spend my summer vacation reviving bonds of love, friendship, and relationship at my grandparent’s ancestral village. There is no other way to spend my yearly break.

Despite being the warmest season, youngsters enjoy summers because of the long vacation. Summer season is amongst the most cherished and eagerly awaited seasons. We look forward to this time of year every year. This is because the season allows us to relax and spend time with our loved ones doing favourite things, many individuals therefore look forward to the summer season. Many people take the summer season off from work to unwind and have fun. During this time of year, many people like playing sports, going for walks or treks, or just relaxing in the backyard. Essay on Summer Vacation

200 Words Essay On Summer Vacation

Spending summer vacation.

Some kids take advantage of their time off by getting tuition in the subject they are weak in. When the last bell at school rings, children look forward to the summer holidays that they can turn into summertime fun. Children look forward to summer vacation because it gives them a long respite from the hectic school and homework schedule.

Some individuals take vacations in the country or travel there to see specific historical and recreational sites. It is the time when students put their studies aside and have a fun road trip away from home to a metropolis, a hill station, or any other peaceful location to escape the heat.

My Summer Vacation

Holidays are a fantastic time for us to take the family to hilly locations. Because of our hectic schedules during the year, the summer is an excellent time for us to go on stress-free excursions and spend time in nature. I spent 15 days at my grandparents' house last year when I went to see them.

The best part of the summer break is exploring and making new friends in the community. I relished my visit and picked up some new knowledge while I was there. The remainder of the holidays were spent cooking and playing games under my mother's supervision.

500 Words Essay On Summer Vacation

Things to do in summer vacation.

The length of the summer break makes it easy for someone to grow bored with them. However, you can do many things to keep yourself occupied and interested over the holidays. Here, we'll go through a variety of activities you can do during your summer break in addition to travelling.

You can participate in any exercise classes or summer camps that are open to you. Additionally, they will provide you with everyday activities to keep your interest.

A new habit can also be formed, such as reading, writing, collecting, or observing. These behaviours not only benefit you in the future and broaden your understanding.

In addition, you can enrol in sports clubs to learn your preferred sports, such as taekwondo, boxing, swimming, and athletics.

Benefits Of Summer Vacation

Schools offer summer breaks to give students a brief break. Summer break is the perfect time to study, giving them a respite from the heat and helping the kids recuperate in their weaker subjects and also from the heat that may cause a lot of damage. Everyone often has their way of spending the summer off, but most prefer to travel to cold regions. Students have time throughout the summer to work on academic projects, travel to new locations, and broaden their knowledge. Children can interact with their family members, understand them, and have fun with them.

My Experience With Summer Vacation

My summer holidays began on the first day, and I quickly became bored, mainly because every single one of my friends had left for elsewhere. Because of this, my parents decided to enrol me in a summer camp. My parents helped me enrol in one that our school was holding on its own.

I initially believed it would be useless and equally dull. To my amazement, I was mistaken. One of my favourite life experiences was summer camp. I had the opportunity to participate in various activities, and it was around this time that I first realised I had a gift for painting.

Despite there being no school, we rose early at 7 a.m. Every day, our trainers would teach us something new. I learned karate on the first day, which was entertaining and beneficial. In addition, I developed my skills in volleyball, table tennis, and basketball. My most anticipated portion finally arrived.

We learned how to paint and were taught unique techniques for mastering this art. I picked it up quickly and began to like painting. I will always be grateful to this summer camp for sparking my interest in painting and other activities.

Because it allows them to unwind and spend time with their loved ones doing activities they enjoy, many individuals look forward to the summer. For relaxation and amusement, many people take summer off from work. All institutions and schools are closed for the summer due to the heat. While some people would rather spend their entire day indoors, others would rather spend time outside. For kids, summer vacation could be a particularly memorable time of year.

Sample 1: How I Spend My Summer Vacation Essay

This summer vacation I visited the Ram Temple in Ayodhya with my family and cousins. For our journey, we booked the Vande Bharat tickets and embarked from New Delhi Railway Station. It was an 11-hour-long journey and was full of excitement. I witnessed so many beautiful spots throughout the journey and people were continuously chanting God’s holy name. It was one of the most beautiful journeys I have ever experienced.

When we reached the Lucknow Central Station, the Ticket Collector told us that we’d reached halfway.
It took us another 5 hours to reach the holy city of Ayodhya. After reaching our destination, My brother and I stepped outside to explore the city. Following that, we headed to the Ram Mandir. The temple was huge and very beautiful. It was decorated with colourful lights and flowers. All the people there were looking overwhelmed with emotions.

Inside the temple, we saw the idol of Lord Ram. It was adorned with beautiful jewels made of gold, diamond, and silver! The priests were singing bhajans, and the atmosphere was very peaceful. We prayed and spent some time sitting quietly, feeling the divine presence. My parents told me stories about Lord Ram, and I felt very happy to learn more about him.

After visiting the temple, we explored the city of Ayodhya. We visited other historical places and temples. Each place had its own unique story and charm. We also enjoyed the local food, which was very tasty. My favourite was the special sweets they made in Ayodhya. It was a really special summer break in my life.

Sample 2: How I Spend My Summer Vacation Essay

This summer vacation, I planned to work on my physical and mental health. I joined a fitness centre which was close to my locality, where I was assigned a personal fitness trainer. She was a qualified trainer who asked me about my goals and drafted a fitness and diet routine accordingly. Initially, I took a 1 month- subscription, as I was not sure how good or bad it would turn out to be. The first week was very challenging as I had to work out for 2 hours straight and then practice yoga for 30 minutes. Every day after coming from the fitness centre, I used to complete my homework and read the newspaper.

Within a week, I was able to do 20 pushups in one set and I wanted to set the bar high. So, I planned on doing 40 pushups before completing 1 month at the fitness centre. The trainers were very helpful there and taught me the right way to do each exercise. They made sure I was practising safely and enjoying myself. They also encouraged me at each step, which improved my confidence.

One of the best parts of joining the fitness centre was making new friends. There were many kids my age, and we quickly became friends. We exercised together, cheered each other on, and had a lot of fun. We even played games like tag and basketball in the centre’s sports area. Having friends around made exercising even more enjoyable.

Joining the fitness centre was a fantastic experience. It helped me become stronger, healthier, and more confident. I made new friends and learned a lot about staying fit and healthy. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing my fitness journey.

Short Essay On How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is a much-awaited time for students, as it provides a break from the routine of school and a chance to relax and recharge. This summer, I had a memorable and enjoyable vacation that I will never forget.

I spent my summer vacation in the countryside with my family. We rented a cabin by a lake, and spent our days fishing, hiking, and exploring the surrounding area. The countryside was beautiful, with rolling hills, dense forests, and sparkling lakes. We spent most of our days outdoors, soaking up the sun and enjoying the fresh air.

One of the highlights of my summer vacation was going fishing with my father. We would rise early in the morning, pack a picnic, and head out to the lake with our fishing gear. I had never been fishing before, and I was amazed by the beauty and tranquility of the lake. We spent hours fishing and chatting, and I was thrilled when I finally caught my first fish.

In addition to fishing, we also went on several hikes in the surrounding hills. The hikes were challenging, but the views from the top were breathtaking. We would stop and rest along the way, taking in the beauty of the landscape and enjoying a snack. The hikes were a great way to stay active and get some exercise while also enjoying the great outdoors.

In the evenings, we would return to our cabin and spend time together as a family. We would cook dinner on the barbecue, play games, and tell stories around the campfire. These evenings were some of my favorite moments of the summer, as they provided an opportunity to bond with my family and create new memories.

In conclusion, my summer vacation was a wonderful and memorable experience. I spent time with my family, enjoyed the great outdoors, and made new memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. Whether it was fishing, hiking, or simply spending time together, my summer vacation was filled with fun and adventure, and I can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Long Essay On How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is a time for relaxation, exploration, and adventure. Whether you’re visiting a new country or staying at home and enjoying the warm weather, there are so many different activities to partake in during this special time. In this essay I will discuss how I spent my summer vacation and what I learned from it. From exploring new places to learning more about myself, read on to find out more about my unforgettable summer!

Introduction

It was a hot, humid summer day when I took my last final exam of the year. As I walked out of the school building, I was finally free! No more classes, no more homework and no more tests! I had the whole summer ahead of me to relax and enjoy myself.

I spent the first few days of my vacation sleeping in late and catching up on some much-needed rest. It felt great to not have to set an alarm clock and wake up early for school. For the next few weeks, I hung out with friends, went to the beach and just enjoyed my time off from school.

One of the highlights of my summer was definitely going on a family vacation. We went camping in a beautiful forest area and it was so much fun! I got to go hiking, fishing and even got to roast marshmallows by the campfire. It was a great way to spend time with my family and create some wonderful memories.

All too soon, summer came to an end and it was time to return back to school. Although I was sad to see the warm weather go, I was excited to start a new school year fresh and ready to learn. Looking back on it now, I had a great summer vacation and am already looking forward to next year’s break!

Overview of my summer vacation

I had a great time on my summer vacation! I went to the beach, saw some amazing sights, and ate some delicious food. Here’s a brief overview of what I did:

I started off my vacation by going to the beach. I spent a few days relaxing in the sun, swimming in the ocean, and just enjoying the beautiful scenery. After that, I took a trip to see some of the local sights. I visited some ancient ruins, went hiking in the mountains, and saw some stunning waterfalls. Finally, I ended my vacation with a bang by indulging in some of the local cuisine. I tried everything from fresh seafood to traditional dishes, and it was all absolutely amazing.

Overall, I had an incredible time on my summer vacation. I got to relax, explore, and eat lots of great food. It was definitely a trip to remember!

Activities I did during the vacation

I spent my summer vacation doing a lot of different activities. I went to the beach, swam in the ocean, and played in the sand. I also went hiking and camping in the mountains. I explored different caves and saw some amazing rock formations. I also took some time to relax at home and read books and play video games. Overall, it was a great summer vacation!

Places I visited over the vacation

I had a great time over the summer vacation visiting different places. I went to the beach, the mountains, and even the city. Each place had its own unique sights and sounds that made for a memorable experience.

The beach was my favorite place to visit. I loved feeling the warm sand between my toes and listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. The mountains were also beautiful, with their towering peaks and lush forests. And finally, the city was a fun place to explore, with its tall buildings and busy streets.

Overall, I had a wonderful time on my summer vacation and would love to do it again sometime soon!

Highlights of my summer vacation

I spent my summer vacation at the beach. It was so much fun! I got to swim, sunbathe, and build sandcastles. I also got to eat lots of delicious food. The best part of my vacation was spending time with my family and friends. We laughed, we danced, and we made great memories together.

Challenges faced during the vacation

One of the challenges I faced during my summer vacation was finding ways to entertain myself. I live in a rural area, so there are not many options for things to do. Another challenge was dealing with the heat. It can get quite hot here in the summer, and there are not always a lot of places to cool off. Finally, another challenge was staying motivated to do things. It can be easy to just relax and not do much when on vacation, but I tried to find ways to stay active and productive.

Reflections and lessons learned from the experience

It’s been a little over two weeks since I got back from my summer vacation in Europe. Overall, it was an amazing experience that I’ll never forget. I got to see some incredible sights, try new food, and meet new people.

There were definitely some challenges along the way, but that’s all part of the adventure. I’ve come away from this trip with a better understanding of other cultures and a greater appreciation for what I have at home.

Here are some of the key reflections and lessons I’ve taken away from my summer vacation:

1. Slow down and enjoy the journey. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and forget to appreciate all that life has to offer. Seeing all the incredible things Europe has to offer was a powerful reminder to slow down and savor the moment.

2. There’s so much beauty in diversity. One of the things that struck me most about Europe is the diversity of its cultures and people. It’s truly a melting pot of different traditions and beliefs, and it’s something we should celebrate instead of fear.

3. We have more in common than we realize. Despite our differences, there is so much that we share as human beings. At the end of the day, we all want to be happy and loved, and that’s something we should remember when interacting with others.

4. Cherish your time with family and friends. Spending time with my family and friends was the highlight of my trip. It’s easy to take our loved ones for granted, but being away from them was a stark reminder of how special they are to me.

Overall, this experience has reaffirmed my faith in the power of travel and taught me many valuable lessons. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to see the world and experience all that it has to offer.

My summer vacation was an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. From attending a concert to exploring new places, there was never a dull moment during my time off from school. I learned so many valuable lessons about myself and the world around me, and am grateful for these memories that will stay with me forever. Whether you had an incredible adventure or stayed home to relax, make sure to take some time to enjoy your summer break – it goes by too quickly!

summer literature & film guide

A comprehensive, hyper-specific summer reading & movie guide (and some podcasts), from moods to locations.

I am currently on vacation (and have been very bad at posting regularly here), so I thought I would post a detailed summer reading guide!

I already posted one a month ago, but had an idea to post more of a hyper-specific one based on travel destinations (or what you like doing in the summer). I also included a few movies for each. Many of these vibes are just my Spotify playlist names, so I am linking them as well. I also listed some of my favorite podcasts (design, history, literature, etc). I’ll do an actual post on it soon!

From the English countryside (classic books) to California’s portion of Route 66 (1960s California Joan Didion esque) to your bedroom (feeling lost in your 20s) here are a bunch of recommendations!

Below is also my original summer literature guide, which is just split into classic literature and contemporary literature.

He contrasts the 20-year U.S. focus on two wars in the Middle East with the ways in which Russia and especially China vastly expanded their global influence during the same time. Sanger’s analysis draws on many personal anecdotes to help explain how we got to where we are today and, more importantly, to identify many of the difficult choices facing the United States and its partners in the coming years.

Next War: Reimagining How We Fight , by John Antal . Antal has been featured on this list before, with 7 Seconds to Die in 2022 . His most recent book extends the early insights he brought from the wars between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020 to grapple with the staggering changes in warfare playing out in real time today in Gaza and Ukraine. Antal lists nine disrupters of modern warfare that challenge the U.S. way of war, which relies on limited numbers of very expensive and exquisite weapons systems. Even though the U.S. military continues to see itself as “ the most lethal fighting force in human history ,” Antal’s compelling catalogue of disrupters suggests that its future dominance is by no means assured.

War in Ukraine: Conflict, Strategy, and the Return of a Fractured World , edited by Hal Brands . Although the war in Ukraine continues to rage on, this volume features essays from an impressive range of scholars analyzing the first two years of the conflict and the consequences it has already had. Standout chapters include those by former Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul and Robert Person on why the invasion occurred; Lawrence Freedman on Vladimir Putin’s strategy; Kori Schake on the U.S. strategy; Michael Kofman on battlefield dynamics; and Frank Gavin on nuclear lessons.

On Modern War – In Fiction

White Sun War , by Mick Ryan . Two years ago, retired Australian Army major general Ryan published War Transformed , a sober analysis of the changing character of modern warfare coupled with recommendations for adapting military institutions and preparing individuals for future conflicts. To our delight, he then followed it up with a terrific work of speculative fiction about a U.S. war with China over Taiwan in 2028. His engrossing narrative seamlessly blends developments at the tactical, operational, strategic, and geopolitical levels of warfare, across all five domains — including an incredibly clever use of outer space power that helps end the war. Sadly, the least plausible part of the book is how thoroughly the U.S. military has incorporated advanced technologies in a conflict that happens four short years from now. Instead of having equipment by then that can be maneuvered through eye blinks, or soldiers wearing arm screens that provide instantaneous AI translation, the Air Force will still be dominated by manned aircraft, the Navy will still be wedded to its carriers, and innovative technological breakthroughs still won’t be able to compete with deeply entrenched, multi-billion-dollar legacy programs of record.

The Oceans and the Stars , by Mark Helprin . One of your loyal columnists fell in love with one of Helprin’s books as a teenager, and she has read virtually everything he has published since. His latest novel is a beautiful, lyrical tale about modern naval warfare, terrorism, the challenges of command, and the timeless virtues of courage, integrity, and sacrifice. We meet Captain Stephen Rensselaer in the prologue as he awaits the verdict of his court-martial for mutiny. His story then unfolds as he runs afoul of Pentagon and presidential politics, falls in love, and leads his crew through seven unexpected battles. Naval nerds will be delighted at the level of technical detail, while others may be happy that Helprin expressly identifies which pages to skip for “those interested primarily in the story.”

Working with Industry

Unit X , by Raj M. Shah and Christopher Kirchhoff . This book is a fascinating account of the origins and ongoing efforts of one of the Pentagon’s most unique organizations, the Defense Innovation Unit, penned by two of its founding members. The Defense Innovation Unit was created in 2015 to build bridges between Silicon Valley’s culture of rapid innovation and failing fast and the infamously risk-averse and stultifyingly slow Pentagon acquisition ecosystem. The unit was conceived as a bold workaround modeled on a venture capital firm, with a mission to get cutting-edge technology into the hands of warfighters in months or years rather than decades. The book chronicles its successes but leaves the reader equally sobered by the staggering bureaucracy that slows every new acquisition, no matter how vital to those on the front lines. As the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and the Red Sea highlight how warfare is rapidly changing, the authors offer a stark warning that “our military’s might has been largely eclipsed by the commercial systems our adversaries are bringing to battle.”

Freedom’s Forge , by Arthur Herman . As we watch the wars in Ukraine and Gaza consume huge amounts of materiel and the Department of Defense prepares for a potential future conflict with China, Herman reminds us of the astonishing U.S. industrial transformation that made America the literal arsenal of democracy in World War II. The United States might not have been able to deliver the goods that ultimately helped win the war if not for the civilian titans of industry who joined the war effort — one of whom even donned three stars to head U.S. Army industrial production — and, as Herman shows, ended up producing more than 286,000 warplanes and 85,000 tanks in just four years. It’s hard to imagine a similar degree of cooperation between industry and the Pentagon in the future — even though the war of attrition raging in Ukraine clearly demonstrates that the U.S. industrial base is completely unprepared to support a prolonged, high-intensity war.

New Perspectives on World War II

When the Sea Came Alive: An Oral History of D-Day , by Garrett M. Graff . Author Graff went through more than 5,000 memoirs, stories, and oral histories to compile this remarkable volume of what Operation Overlord was like for those who fought in it. He deftly weaves together

testimonies from more than 700 individuals into a story that reads like a novel, adding only a small amount of supplemental text to provide context. You’ve never read a book about D-Day that’s quite like this one before. For as Graff powerfully notes, “It’s here — at the human level — where we find the greatest and most true story of D-Day.”

Nimitz at War: Command Leadership from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay , by Craig L. Symonds . Admiral Chester Nimitz is arguably the single most important figure responsible for America’s decisive victory over Imperial Japan in World War II. Yet he is also among the least well-known and recognized, largely because of his self-effacing personality and quiet, collaborative leadership style. Nimitz led the U.S. military in the Pacific back from its stunning defeat and demoralization after Pearl Harbor in 1941 to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay less than four year later. In an age too often marked by shameless self-promotion and the shirking of responsibility by CEOs and social media influencers alike, this new account sheds a fresh light on one of the military’s most effective organizers and motivators — and provides a unique leadership example of how to come back from devastating failures.

The Wonders of Air and Space

Orbital , by Samantha Harvey . This short and stunning novel propels the reader into the tiny compartments of an orbiting space station to accompany its six space travelers through 24 hours — 16 sunrises and sunsets — above the stunning blue and green planet Earth below. Harvey’s elegantly breathtaking language borders on poetry, describing the otherworldly experience of astronauts encountering one sunrise and sunset after another, broken by stunning vistas of a fragile Earth slowly unfolding below — a glimpse of eternity. You will never think about space travel — or our delicate planet — in the same way again.

Wind, Sand, and Stars , by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry . First published by the famed French pioneering pilot and adventurer in 1939, this little-known work evokes awe and astonishment as Saint-Exupéry brilliantly describes his journeys through the unforgiving sky in peace and war. The breadth and reach of his astonishing adventures continue to amaze, but his most important message comes from the insights he provides about “the land of men” below. Reflective, thought-provoking, and deeply human, this work takes us back to a time when aviation was still novel — and the marvels of flight have arguably never been more poetically captured.

Just for Fun

Everyone Knows But You , by Thomas E. Ricks . Many of our loyal readers will recognize Ricks for his Pulitzer Prize–winning journalism and his many important books about the military and the recent wars . This time, Ricks turns to fiction, with a captivating thriller set on a fictitious island in Maine — near the area where Ricks has lived for many years. FBI agent Ryan Tapia has been exiled to a remote corner of a remote state, investigating the mysterious death of a fisherman. Ricks takes us deep into the world of Maine lobstermen and the local indigenous tribe to figure out whodunnit and why.

Swan Song , by Elin Hilderbrand . Hilderbrand — who is often described as “queen of the beach read” — brings an uncanny knack for brilliant plots, engaging characters, and cracking suspense to her series of novels set on Nantucket Island off the New England coast. This 27th and final book in her Nantucket series weaves a compelling mystery around the sudden comeuppance of wealthy outsiders who disrupt the island’s quiet life but soon leave a body and torched mansion behind. Pure fun, and a delightful end to a much-loved series.

In the passage, the work of Copernicus is contrasted with the work of A. the Almagest. B. the universe. C. Galileo Galilei. D. On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres.

A: The Almagest

Explanation:

"The work of Copernicus is contrasted with Ptolemy's work, the Almagest. The first four sentences of the passage describe Ptolemy's theory of the universe, which is then contrasted with the later and more accurate theory that Copernicus put forth in his On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres. The remainder of the passage details his heliocentric theory. The signal word "however" midway through the passage establishes this contrast."

-Study Island

The work of Copernicus is contrasted with the work of the Almagest. Thus, option A is correct.

The Renaissance mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic priest Nicolaus Copernicus developed a theory of the universe that put the Sun, not Earth, at its centre. Aristarchus of Samos, an early Greek astronomer, had likely established his model independently of Copernicus, who most likely did it some eighteen centuries earlier.

Just before he passed away in 1543, Copernicus published his model in his book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), which became the catalyst for the Copernican Revolution and made a significant contribution to the Scientific Revolution. In Royal Prussia, which had been a part of the Kingdom of Poland since 1466, Copernicus was born and died.

Have a Foreign Language Love Affair This Summer

A three-panel cartoon with green mountains on top, a sky blue stripe in the middle and at the bottom a person wearing sunglasses with blue and green lenses with Japanese characters.

By Mark Vanhoenacker

Mr. Vanhoenacker is an airline pilot and an author.

One morning late last autumn, I took off from London’s Heathrow Airport, my base as a Boeing 787 pilot , and landed the next morning at Haneda Airport in Tokyo. By early afternoon I was walking under the turning foliage of Rikugien , one of my favorite gardens, where I paused by a wooden sign at the edge of a stream. Despite having studied Japanese for years, the text on the sign — something about slippery stones ahead — included several characters I didn’t recognize, so I fired up an app I’d recently discovered. It scanned and translated all of them instantly.

Such tools — and others that can translate speech — are astonishing. But with this magic at our fingertips, is the study of foreign languages now pointless?

Not at all. In fact, foreign languages are more rewarding than ever, in part because technology has made them easier than ever to learn.

My love of languages began in childhood. Growing up in rural Western Massachusetts, foreign languages were inseparable from the wonder I associated with globes and maps, and with the graceful airliners I dreamed of someday flying to distant places. I learned some French and Dutch from my Belgian father and studied Spanish in high school. The language I really fell for, though, is Japanese, which I first studied during a summer homestay in Kanazawa.

The world has changed a lot since the summer of 1991. But there are still reasons for us to invest in foreign language studies. Despite the global pre-eminence of English and the growing sophistication of translation tools, U.S. businesses and government agencies have an unmet need for language skills. Yet as of 2017, only about one in five K-12 students study a foreign language, and enrollment in U.S. college foreign language classes dropped by almost one-third between 2009 and 2021. These gaps mean that career opportunities are plentiful for language learners, both at home and abroad.

It’s true that many English speakers don’t need language skills to travel these days, especially with smartphones that can translate a menu (or even what a waiter is saying) in real time. But few people would argue that the existence of calculators means we needn’t study math. Language learning is associated with enhanced memory, creativity and concentration. It boosts overall academic performance and may also delay neurological decline as you age. For all of us, language learning is a gym for the brain.

I took my daughters to see Taylor Swift. It was cheaper than a typical family vacation and more fun.

  • My twin daughters turned 12 and I gifted them a trip to see their idol.
  • We flew from the US to Cardiff, Wales to see Swift perform.
  • I never had more fun at a concert, and it was a memorable experience for my daughters.

Insider Today

"I'm not spoiling my children; I'm making deposits of joy," that's what I recited to myself silently as I clicked on four tickets for Taylor Swift's one-night-only Eras Tour appearance in Cardiff, Wales.

These were the most affordable tickets of her entire European leg, but compared to the four figures that tickets are going for in Miami and New Orleans this fall, they seemed almost reasonable. It's no secret that Taylor Swift and the Eras Tour is boosting tourism numbers around the world , selling out hotels, and spurring airlines to add new flights. For us, it was the best family vacation ever.

My twin daughters are huge Swifties

The Swiftie Era started in our house when our then 11-year-old twin girls came home from two weeks at sleepaway camp last summer, confirmed Taylor Swift fans. But it really tipped over into a frenzy when they heard one of their friend's parents had bought tickets as a birthday present to see the Eras Tour in Liverpool this June.

My husband and I explained it was not a thing we could do. Tickets were prohibitively expensive , and we were already planning a family summer vacation in Southern California.

Then, all of a sudden, a trickle became a flood — three friends were going to Paris , another to Amsterdam. Then, one night, one twin was prostrate on the couch crying after she found out one of her BFFs was going to see Taylor in Madrid. We gave her the same speech — buying tickets for hundreds of dollars and flying to Europe for a concert is just not something this family could do.

I remember when my parents made my dreams come true

Growing up, I was fortunate to have everything I needed, but we couldn't afford everything I wanted. I remembered things I had wanted ferociously as a child that would have seemed inconsequential to my parents. Like an expensive navy blazer with gold buttons that my tween brain thought would make me feel popular in the 8th grade. I cried, I begged, but my father said no. I also remembered when a parent made a wish come true. I was obsessed with horses and my mother got me riding lessons at a local stable where I eventually worked.

With those memories still engrained in my adult brain, I told my husband I wanted to make this happen. We ran the numbers, and our planned summer vacation to California — flights, renting a car, an Airbnb or a hotel, Disneyland — would cost the same or more as four tickets to see Taylor Swift in Wales and staying a few days with friends in London. Somehow, a staunch no turned into a yes.

A couple of weeks later, we surprised our twin tweens with the most ear-splittingly joyous gift ever for their 12th birthday. We called them into the living room and told them we couldn't plan a big birthday party this year and would have to do something else instead. We slipped them each an envelope, and as they unfolded a card that said, "Pack your bags, we're headed to see the Eras Tour," their mouths dropped open as they screamed and leaped into our arms. One sobbed for half an hour.

My girls were in their element

In the run-up to the concert, our apartment turned into a bead bracelet factory, and we were dress shopping up until the day before our flight.

But the moment we stepped off the train in Cardiff amid a throng of other Swifties pulling their rollie bags to various city center hotels, the girls simply shone. They were in their element, surrounded by their fellow fans, who were decked out in spangles, sequins, and cowboy boots.

We also said yes to dressing up and threw ourselves into it as a family. The girls put on their "13" temporary tattoos and created hearts around their eyes with stick-on rhinestones and pearls. They made us paper crowns and me a Miss Americana sash, while my husband wore a T-shirt emblazoned with "Heartbreak Prince." In the stadium, we saw numerous middle-aged men bedecked in "Proud Swiftie Dad" pins and hats.

I never had more fun at a concert

For the next three and a half hours , they sang every song and waved their arms. The girls got the royal treatment from fellow fans who came over to trade bracelets and coo over their outfits. When the girls learned that the Cardiff local sitting next to me didn't know the bracelets were a thing, they insisted on giving her four or five of their own, slipping them onto her bare wrist.

And then it was over, but we saw Taylor walk from behind the stage and give a special wave. One twin turned to me and said, "This is the greatest night of my life," while the other more darkly said, "We have nothing left to live for." As for me, I have never had more fun at a concert.

I don't know what her magic is, but Taylor Swift is an effortless, tireless performer who emanates an effervescence of her own. Every time I turned to look at the girls, their eyes were gleaming, and their smiles were wide from ear to ear. The lightness I felt witnessing their pure, unfiltered joy was immense.

We didn't give up a family vacation for a concert; in fact, it was the best decision we could have made for our family this summer. We have stories now of how we managed when our train from Paddington Station was canceled, how we caught the last boat down to Cardiff harbor and rode on the big Ferris wheel, and how the girls tried Welsh rarebit for the first time. We'll hold onto that golden glow of joy and memory. I'm banking on it.
